WELCOME
Last weekend saw us undertake our first long bus trip and although sometimes these can be dreaded it was certainly nice to be on the road again and enjoy some good or not so good chat.
The weather conditions that we left at Station Road certainly were not mimicked when we landed in Chester. Very heavy rain and a few degrees colder meant for tricky conditions.
However, the young team that wore the lavender and black were determined to show their mettle and played the majority of the game with good tactical nous. Although, surprisingly we left a number of chances begging.
The main work on from the previous week’s draw was to keep calm during pressure and this we certainly achieved. However, the last minute has been the key focus of the week. How do we close out the game?
Clearly we did this against Dings but probably more luck than habit.
However, one loss so far and plenty of learnings and improvements has made a pretty positive first month of the season.
Today we welcome local rivals Weston. The Hornets have made a strong start to the season and we all hope that today will create some exciting and physical rugby. I am excited by the team that the coaching staff have picked today and hope all will enjoy the performance.
Lastly, happy 30th birthday to Mitch Spencer, let all hope he now grows......up a little. Although, genetics are a tough hurdle to overcome.

Ricky is a valuable asset to Monarch Education, and we proudly support and sponsor him in his rugby endeavors for several compelling reasons. Firstly, Ricky's exceptional dedication and commitment to the sport reflect the same qualities we seek in our team members. His unwavering work ethic and passion for rugby serve as an inspiring example for our staff and students alike, fostering a culture of determination and excellence within our organization.
Additionally, Ricky's leadership on the rugby field translates seamlessly to his role within our educational community, where he actively engages in mentoring and coaching our newer recruits within the company.

By sponsoring Ricky, we not only promote his personal growth but also strengthen the bond between Monarch Education and the broader community, demonstrating our commitment to nurturing talent and fostering positive role models.
From our Divisional Manager, Luke Cocking

We welcome Hornets RFC who make the short trip from Weston Super Mare for today’s encounter. We trust their team, officials and supporters enjoy our hospitality. This is their second season at National League level having entered last season and enjoyed relative success. Two of their coaches Jack Gadd and Jake Caulfield had short spells at Clifton a while back playing with distinction.
Hornets were formed in 1962 when a number of Weston RFC players decided to start another rugby club in the town. I had the pleasure of playing against them in their inaugural season as at the time I was playing for Midsomer Norton RFC. We had two draws, not pretty to watch but great to play in. The players changed in those days in a pub on Hutton Moor but now they have excellent facilities still in the Hutton Moor area, they have progressed through the leagues and are well known for their success in youth and junior rugby.
The Wanderers and Misfits have experienced mixed fortunes and last evening the Wanderers entertained Longlevens, the league leaders at home. Next week the first team travels away to Hinkley.

Following our exciting win against Camborne, we entertained our long standing rivals Redruth and somehow let a winning margin slip and it ended in a draw. However although losing our fly half in the eight minute we equipped ourselves well and some would say a draw was a fair result. Last saturday more tension as we let a nine point lead, with seventy five minutes on the clock, slip and we lost by one point. Our opponents being Chester where despite continuous rain an exciting match ensued on their all weather pitch. Clifton fielded a number of newbies due to injury and unavailability and I must say they equipped themselves to the task admirably gaining valuable experience. Also I must mention the hospitality shown to us from Chester as they discover new
Today amongst our supporters we welcome club legend Brian Ben Jordan who despite poor health has made the journey from the Care Home to be with us today. We trust he sees a good game and acquaints himself with his many Clifton friends, some who have known Ben for many years when he was first a player and then a major part of the administration of the club holding many positions. A big welcome for Ben and Linda please.

Finally I believe the money raised for St. Peters Hospice raised by the endurance running of Toby Fletcher was around £40,000, what an effort from such a young lad.
Enjoy your rugby
John Raine President CliftonCLIFTON V REDRUTH CLIFTON 31 REDRUTH 31

Clifton will be disappointed with this result but Redruth will take encouragement from their performance which ensured they came from behind at critical moments.
Almost from the kick off Scrum half Blake Boyland sped under the posts to open the home team account with Kieran Hill converting before an injury led to him leaving the action with Mitch Spencer taking on the fly half role. Redruth’s first excursion into the Clifton 22 gave Jordan Gott a well taken penalty chance.
Clifton gave away penalties and territory and swift handling sent winger Frank Nowell in to put his team ahead with Gott adding the extras. Clifton second row Henry Harper surged over to hit back for the first of his two tries with Spencer converting.
Injuries led to a prolonged first half and Harper scored his second with Spencer again converting before Redruth hooker Luke Barnes crossed with Gott converting.
Reds Replacement Mackenzie Oliver powered across with Gott increasing the Redruth lead .Redruth went offside and Spencer brought the scores level to increase tension.
A pulsating final period started with Clifton prop Ricky Cano driving over and Spencer converting to set up a seven point lead.
Redruth showed determination with full back Morgan prominent to create a chance for Nowell’s second try converted by Gott to ensure the honours were even.

Some plus factors for Clifton included the return of Alex Howman from injury and he took the man of the match award and having to adapt to the loss of Hill so early in the game. Clifton Head Player-Coach , Luke Cozens, who was rested for this game summed up by saying, “Credit to Redruth they came and made it difficult for us to get going all afternoon. We still got ourselves into a position to win the game but lacked the maturity and leadership to get the job done and in the end it could of gone either way. We discussed at the start of the season about growing and improving together in difficult situations. Losing Keiran Hill at 10 early in the game was a perfect scenario to test us. We didn’t get it right which we will discuss this week at training and then build towards a difficult away fixture in Chester where we will need to be on our game from the go to get the result “.

WANDERERS
WANDERERS 28 - 30 OLD BRISTOLIANS 1ST XV

The Wanderers entered Saturdays contest on the back of a defeat away at Nailsea, hoping to right the ship and get back in the win column, and with the visitors Old Bristolians searching for their first win of the season, a thrilling encounter at Station Road encountered.
The hosts struck first with a line break and patient play eventually rewarded, when a Luke McMullen chip was gathered and finished by winger Harry Leigh under the posts, allowing a simple conversion from Wil O’Connor.
OB’s struck back soon after to level the score, and added 2 further tries before the half time break to end the first half at 17-7, after keeping the ball well and finding gaps in the Clifton defence.
Clifton wanted to come out and establish themselves early in the second half, but it was OB’s who got the first points after the break, with a penalty kick 5m from the Clifton line, allowing a well worked catch and drive to extend the score to 22-7.
Clifton responded well, with phase play and great link up between the Clifton back line leading to center Henry Sweet touching down under the posts. Again, O’Connor added the extras.
Shortly after, OB’s again took the ball to the Clifton 22, and exposed gaps in the defence to score their 5th try of the day, with a missed conversion leaving the score at 14-27.
Clifton seemed to spring to life, and quick thinking from O’Connor to tap and go from a penalty and pass to McMullen under the posts bringing Clifton within 1 score.
Clifton then scored again with arguably the try of the day, as extended pressure led to space out wide, and a delicate cross field kick by McMullen was taken well by Khane TaylorYoung in the corner. O’Connor slotted a difficult touch line conversion to give Clifton their first lead of the day at 28-27, with 10 minutes to play.
Clifton were unable to clear their lines from the ensuing kick off, leading to an OB’s penalty in front of the posts, which gave a 30-28 lead. OB’s controlled the ball well from the kick off, and put the ball into touch for the win, much to the delight of their players.
The Wanderers will be looking to bounce back in a tough Friday night game against Longlevens on the 6th October, while OB’s will look to build momentum when they host Clevedon on October 14th.
