It was way back in 1959 that Pamela Uren met a young farmer, Roy Grundy, through the Oakey Junior Farmers Branch.

This was where the union started. It didn’t take long for Roy to realise that Pam, the daughter of the local bank manager, would be a good catch!

Edward Royce Grundy (Roy) and Pamela Olwyn Uren (Pam) tied the knot on 29th April 1961 at Saint Luke’s Church of England (corner Ruthven and Herries Streets, Toowoomba); at which the late Canon Arthur Fellows officiated the ceremony.

New pump-king almost pipped Huge crowds at Anzac services by record 171kg local entry

Bowenville State School student, Jimmy Finch, has set the new record in the Royal Queensland Show’s (Ekka) Giant Pumpkin Competition youth class with his whopping 171kg entry.

The giant pumpkin competition is one of the Ekka’s most iconic agricultural competitions, dating back to the first show in 1876.

Some of the giant pumpkins will return to

the Brisbane Showgrounds in August, to be displayed in the Agricultural Hall presented by seqwater at the Ekka.

Atlantic Giant Pumpkin seeds at the Show.

He said the club has decided to give these items to the current playing group to kick them off for the season.

“The head gear were barely used.

“It was a perfect opportunity to give them to the kids who need them,” Mr Altadonna said.

“It can be tough for families to purchase new gear and we are more than happy to help them out when we can.

“A head gear can make the game safer for the players, especially for the young ones.”

Mr Altadonna said it is not long until the season begins for the Junior Bears.

“We commence games in May,” he said.

“Numbers aren’t great, mainly due to the COVID-19 break but we definitely have enough to be competitive.

“It should be a good year.”

He said while the services honoured the ill-fated Gallipoli landing and subsequent campaign in Turkey in World War I, the date had become a broader national memorial day.

“These services are important occasions for us to formally remember and reflect on the sacrifice of past generations of servicemen and women from this area,” he said.

“Apart from honouring their selfless deeds, we must remember there is a new generation of men and women who recently have been involved in operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“Australian personnel, including people from this Region, also remain on duty in numerous peacekeeping and other operations around the world,” Mayor Antonio said.

After a year without a full season of matches, the Oakey Bears Junior Rugby League Club is getting ready for a jam-packed 2021 thanks to a grant from the Queensland Government and some thrifty thinking from the committee to use existing equipment to keep the younger grades safe while playing rugby league.

Adam Altadonna from the Oakey Junior Bears said the committee is hard at work preparing for the season.

He said the preparation was made even better when the club found out they were successful in their application for a Queensland Sport and Recreation Covid Kickstart Grant.

Mr Altadonna said the grant, worth almost $4,500, enabled the club to purchase new equipment and much needed training gear for the coaches and players.

“The equipment we were able to purchase with the grant includes tackle bags and other bags for training,” he said.

Mr Altadonna said this equipment will help the teams prepare after months out of the game.

It was Jimmy’s first time growing a giant pumpkin, after being given the seeds by his teacher at Bowenville State School last September.

He not only won the youth class, but he also smashed the current 64kg Ekka youth record set by Angela Kalkaus in 2015.

Jimmy was also close to reaching the total of veteran grower, Minden’s Geoff Frohloff, who won the open class with a 196kg pumpkin.

He said he only expected his pumpkin to grow to supermarket size.

RNA Chief Executive Brendan Christou said the giant pumpkin competition was the first to crown its Grand Champion in the Ekka’s comeback year.

“There is wonderful community sentiment for the Show following the cancellation of the 2020 Ekka due to COVID-19,” Mr Christou said.

“Planning is full steam ahead, there’s great excitement and we’ve seen great interest in our competitions, with thousands of entries already received.”

Continued from page 1 Oakey RSL Sub-branch president, Chris Markham, thanked the community for its support and dedication to Anzac Day. He said the Sub-branch was overwhelmed by the crowds at both events on Sunday.

“It was absolutely bloody fantastic,” Mr Markham said.

“We had very good crowds.

“We weren’t expecting that number of people.

“It was, wow! I have never seen crowds like it.

“The amount of wreaths laid at the events were also up which is good to see.

“I want to thank the community for their efforts especially coming back from a year without a in person service.”

Toowoomba Region Mayor Paul Antonio said Anzac Day is an important occasion for the region.

TO THE PAST

A local fallen soldier

Private William James (John) Murdoch, 3830, was one of the many brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives during World War I to protect this country. Willie was born in Toowoomba on September 19, 1896 to parents James Murdoch and Elizabeth Erdmann who came to Oakey in 1904 to take over the bakery business of Thomas Webb. Willie began his schooling with his sister Daisy at the Oakey State School on March 7, 1904. After completing school, he worked for 18 months as an apprentice barber to George Atwell in Oakey.

He enlisted in the Army on August 2, 1915 (aged 18 years and ten months) after serving for three months in the Australian

Militia. He was in 12 Rfts 9th Battalion when he embarked with his unit from Brisbane on board H.M.A.T. A 50 “Itonus” on December 30, 1915. On arrival in Zeitoun, Egypt on February 29, 1916, he was transferred to 49th Battalion.

After three months intensive training in the heat of Egypt, on June 5, William joined the B.E.F. in Alexandria where he embarked with his battalion on board “Arcadian” bound for France.

Arriving on June 12, William and the 49th Battalion moved into the trenches of the Somme on the Western Front. Over the following months, he fought with great courage until April 2, 1917 when

he was seriously wounded with gunshot wounds to his legs. He was evacuated to the 3rd Casualty Clearing Station where he sadly passed away later the same day.

William now rests in the Pozieres British Cemetery on the Somme with thousands more who laid down their lives for our freedom. His Gravestone bears the inscription “In Memory of the dearly loved son of Mr. & Mrs. Murdoch of Oakey”.

Local business takes Local Drone Field Day charge of new Oakey pavilion construction

The Gomaren & Doctors Creek Catchment Landcare Group is hosting a Drone Field Day to give farmers and property owners a complete picture of how the technology can be used in their operation.

The field day will be held on Saturday, May 8 from 1pm to 4pm at Gary and Norma Legg’s property ‘Warrawee Angus’, which is at 1724 Kingsthorpe-Haden Road, Goombungee.

The sod was officially turned on the new pavilion project at the Oakey Show last month with a Coops team in the process of commencing foundations works.

Coops QLD owner, David Cooper, said it is a privilege for the company to be involved in the project.

“Projects like this are truly humbling, to be constructing a pavilion in our local community that will play part in many local traditions and celebrations for generations to come makes me really proud,” he said.

“My great grandchildren will be able to look back at the pavilion in years to come and be proud of the part we have played in this wonderful community.”

The project will add to the infrastructure and activities at Oakey Showgrounds and support the work of several groups not only the local show society.

Mr Cooper said, as the building will be a community asset, it is important for the business to use as many local organisations and individuals in the construction of it.

“At Coops we not only employ approximately 40 local staff, we also have

a preferred suppliers list which encompasses suppliers and subcontractors whom are predominantly locals,” he said.

“We believe building stronger local connections is key to continuing the success of the business.”

Mr Cooper said it is anticipated that the pavilion will be completed in June well in time for the 2022 Show.

He said overall Coops QLD is a great supporter of the Show Society and everything it provides to the local community.

“We are truly lucky to have such a diverse, educated and dedicated Show Society committee,” Mr Cooper said.

“The combined knowledge is astounding and has paved the way for some very successful years ahead.

“We have assisted in the past with minor works in preparations of the Showgrounds prior to the annual Show and Rodeo as well as sponsorship.

“This year we were very proud to sponsor the Fireworks, I have many happy memories of sharing the wonder of fireworks with my family and this year’s display was nothing short of fabulous.”

Landholders urged to challenge valuation hikes

Local drought resilience and innovation hub

World-renowned climate scientists, agricultural experts and community researchers from the University of Southern Queensland will lead an Australian Government hub to help drought-proof Southern Queensland and Northern New South Wales.

Minister for Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management David Littleproud (right) announced details of the first of eight Drought Resilience Adoption and Innovation Hubs, a flagship of the multi-billion-dollar Future Drought Fund.

The Australian Government will invest $8 million in the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) led hub over four years, with more than $11 million contribution from hub members.

This hub will bring together farmers, industry, agribusinesses and communities in Southern Queensland/ Northern New South Wales

hub, headquartered in Toowoomba with nodes in Stanthorpe, Roma, Longreach, Lismore and Narrabri.

Mr Littleproud said the hubs are part of the Federal Government’s $5 billion Future Drought Fund.

“Innovation, driving the development and adoption of new drought resilient technologies and practices, is a central strategy under the Fund,” he said.

“Each Hub will service a broad area and respond to the needs and conditions of their region.

“A ‘hub and spoke’ model is being used to provide shopfronts across regional Australia.

Local library continues to be a valuable service to community

Four of the Toowoomba Region’s favourite library services will soon return with the key activities found to be the most popular provided by local libraries.

Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) Environment and Community Services portfolio leader Cr Tim McMahon (right) said the good news came off the back of initial results from the Toowoomba Region Libraries Survey.

“The return of these four programs is part of an interim offering while Council considers the survey results to determine what the future package will be,” Cr McMahon said.

“I’d like to thank all community members across the Toowoomba Region for their feedback and participation so far.

“In total we had 1,460 residents complete the survey, which gives us great insight into what services are most important to our community.

“Council ran the survey to assess community satisfaction with its libraries and identify ways to improve the service.

“The Home Library Service, which provides reading materials and resources to residents who are unable to visit our libraries in person, will resume for existing Home Library Service members in May 2021.

“The First 5 Forever Storytime program, which helps build literacy foundations for children aged up to five, will resume in mid May 2021.

“The Tech Savvy Seniors Queensland Program, which provides older people with the opportunity to develop the skills and confidence to use technology, will resume in early June.”

From the preliminary results of the Toowoomba Region Libraries Survey, residents indicated the reasons they visited libraries in the Region were to borrow books (98%), relax and enjoy the environment (79%) and to participate in library activities and events (63%).

The most valued services are physical collections, including books and DVDs (70%), and library programs and events (33%).

Results also show that eBooks (36% per cent) and the My TRlibrary app

(30%) are the most used digital resources.

“It’s great to have this feedback which Council will use to make a decision on the future shape and priorities of our library services later this year,” Cr McMahon said.

“The community will also have further opportunities to comment on library services with Council running focus groups to explore survey feedback from late May 2021.

“Council encourages the community to get involved in these sessions.”

It was a fresh morning for the 33 people who participated in Oakey Parkrun on Saturday with an impressive six personal best times recorded at the local event.

Mehdi Reyazee ran in a personal best time of 19:39 minutes to come in first place on Saturday.

He was followed by regular Dave McRae who also finished in a personal best time of 19:42 minutes.

Hound Dog Fit member, Amanda Klein, came in third place in a time of 20:49 minutes.

This time was a personal best for Amanda.

Fourth place went to Joanna McRae, 21:23 minutes; and fifth to Benjamin Fenton, 21:29 minutes.

Other personal best times went to Duncan Miller, 25:30 minutes; Laurene Williams, 36:35 minutes; and Bonnie Wheatley 37:11 minutes.

There were six first time Oakey participants, these included: Deb Harris, 23:03 minutes; Catherine Gerrard, 27:20 minutes; Bert Simon, 27:37 minutes; Amyless Hinselwood, 34:23 minutes; Oliver Jones, 42:52 minutes and Jennifer Eather, 57:43 minutes.

Mervyn Lionel Vivian Hass was born in Oakey on May 16, 1915 and was killed in the Netherlands on 6 December 1942.

According to Aviation Heritage Museum records he enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force on July 20, 1941 and joined unit No. 464 Squadron, RAF Station Feltwell, Norfolk.

His service number is 414026.

Records show he was the son of Oakey residents Frederick and Jane Hass.

Local family pays tribute to veteran

The Packham and Duffy families and their friends proved it is never to late to honour a serviceman with members of the 7th Signal Regiment at Cabarlah travelling to Oakey to present Marjorie Packham with medals and honours awarded to her late husband Petty Officer (PO) Richard Packham.

PO Packham enlisted in the Navy in 1953 serving on many ships during his over 20 years’ service, including the Cerberus, Nirimba, Albatross, Penguin, Sydney and Melbourne.

Upon leaving the Navy, PO Packham was only awarded the Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.

He sadly passed away when Mrs Packham, now a resident of EAF McDonald Nursing Home, was just 49 years old, without claiming his other awards and honours.

Packham were able to obtain his unclaimed awards: Australian Active Service Medal 19451975 with Vietnam and Malaya Clasp, Vietnam Medal, Australia, Service Medal (ASM) 1945-1975 with FESR Clasp (Far East Strategic Reserve), Australian Defence Medal.

Lieutenant Colonel Timothy Pike, Commanding Officer 7th Signals Regiment based at Cabarlah who presented the medals to Mrs Packham last week said it gave him a special feeling to take part in the ceremony.

“It is a wonderful privilege to present these medals,” Lt. Col.

Pike said.

“I know it is a long time coming but it is a very important way to close the chapter in recognising Richard’s service.

“It is an absolute privilege to do that and to present the medals that should have been awarded a long time ago.”

He said he hopes Mrs Packham wears the medals with pride during future Anzac Day and Remembrance Day services.

Mrs Duffy said she would like to thank Mr Haycock OAM for his help and for mounting the medals to present to her mother.
