Next stop: Model Trains & Hobby Expo

The 2021 Toowoomba Model Trains & Hobby Expo will be held on the weekend of 5-6 June at Toowoomba Showgrounds.

Hosted by the Toowoomba Model Railway Club, the annual event will be running from 9am to 5pm on Saturday 5 June and from 9am to 4pm on Sunday 6 June.

Located in the Founders Pavilion of the Showgrounds, there will be a wide array of attractions to see.

This includes model railway layouts in all the popular scales, historical societies, trade stands, an artisan market and refreshments.

The event will feature Kid’s Korner with activities for the little ones, including a colouring competition with prizes, and layouts the children can operate.

In addition to model trains, there will be other modelling crafts on display as well as other hobbies.

There will be free parking available in the Toowoomba Showgrounds on both days.

Michelle Phillips of Electrical Sensations is having 20cm cut off her hair to make wigs for cancer sufferers.

Miss Phillips is having her hair cut as part of the Cancer Council PonyTail Project which collects hair to make wigs and raises money for Cancer Council Australia.

To support her, Electrical Sensations will be donating 100 per cent of the proceeds from all of its electric blanket and portable electric heater testing until the end of June.

People can drop off their electric blankets and/or portable heaters to the Electrical Sensations office located at 57 Gipps Street, Drayton, where the items are then tested to make sure they are electrically safe.

All of the money paid gets donated to the Cancer Council.

Global cultures to centre on Toowoomba

The 15th Toowoomba Languages and Cultures Festival will be held at Toowoomba’s Queens Park this Sunday, May 30.

There will be live music by award-winning bands Peter Campbell and the Backline, plus the Hokumotion Jazz Trio, a circus act, llamas, many languages on display, a language London phone booth, and a VW beetle that can translate poetry, among many other interesting activities.

There will also be many specialty foods for visitors.

Toowoomba International Multicultural Society President and Festival co-founder Gitie House OAM said final preparations were underway to ensure a fantastic day celebrating cultural diversity from 10am to 3pm.

Mrs House said there was a great air of anticipation ahead of the festival following 2020’s COVID-enforced cancellation.

“One World - Many Faces is the theme of the Toowoomba Languages and Cultures Festival that continues to showcase our amazing array of talent from across the world,” she said.

“Crowds will be treated to the colour and spectacle of our Filipino performers as our feature culture, with many other musical and cultural performances scheduled across the day.

Letters To the Editor HOUSING CRISIS To the Editor, Numerous articles have highlighted the severe housing crisis in Toowoomba, and the need for further building and investment improvements.

Families are now living in shared renting with friends and relatives.

These conditions would never be in place if TRC amended the PIA and increased the areas to be available for developing.

Numerous Developers are ready, the community needs the PIA to be amended.

Clayton Rogers, Westbrook VOLUNTARY ASSISTED DYING LAWS Dear Editor, In coming months our 93 state MPs will vote on a proposed law to introduce voluntary assisted dying (VAD).

The state government asked the independent and expert Queensland Law Reform Commission to draft a VAD Bill which has now been released and will soon be the subject of scrutiny and feedback by the parliamentary Health Committee before being debated by MPs in September.

The QLRC’s report and draft Bill mark a milestone in the long and hard battle to secure VAD laws for Queenslanders.

Many people involved with Dying With Dignity Queensland have waged this fight for more than 30 years.

Many of them could have benefited from a VAD law but have died long before seeing the latest positive developments in the law reform process.

As we continue to push for VAD laws we should remember them.

VAD laws have been passed in Victoria, Western Australia, and Tasmania, and already operate in many places overseas.

But there is no guarantee the Queensland Bill will succeed.

So all Queenslanders wanting a better choice at the end of life must let their local MP know that they are expecting them to vote for VAD. While MPs will have a conscience vote on the VAD Bill, they should remember that the Bill is not about them.

It is about giving terminally ill people or those dying from a neurological condition a voluntary choice to end their intolerable suffering.

Voluntary assisted dying will not result in a single extra death but it will mean a lot less suffering.

Jos Hall President Dying With Dignity Queensland BY-ELECTION FUNDING Dear Editor, Regarding the article in On Our Selection News on 20 May 2021 headed “Liberal Party tops funding for Groom byelection” - I question why the Liberal Party should be paid when it did not appear to participate in the by-election.

The anomaly that I query arises from the existence of the Liberal National Party in Queensland seemingly subsuming both the Liberal Party and the National Party.

As an elector I am puzzled that successful LNP candidates in federal elections can morph into either Liberal Party or National Party members when they get to Canberra.

One might expect that people who cast their votes could vote for either the Liberal Party or the National Party.

Some who voted for the Country Party in earlier times might feel disenfranchised by having their vote diverted to put a Liberal member into the parliament.

Leaving aside the apparent lack of transparency in the Liberal and National Parties’ electoral arrangements, the matter that puzzled me was that the Liberal Party received the funding from the AEC for the by-election.

Why would it not be given to the LNP? This raises a hypothetical question: if an LNP candidate changes from Liberal to National in Canberra do the AEC distributed public funds then go to the National Party?

Car crashes into gully at Hodgson Vale

Emergency services were called to the New England Highway between Hodgson Vale and Cambooya on Friday morning as a car heading northbound drove down an embankment.

The incident occurred just after 7am and saw police, paramedics and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) personnel attend the scene.

The driver of the vehicle, a female in her 50s, complained of neck pain and was transported to St. Vincent’s Private Hospital Toowoomba in a stable condition.

Traffic was stopped in both directions for a significant amount of time as work was undertaken to retrieve the vehicle from the deep gully.

A heavy duty tow truck was needed to hoist the vehicle out of the gully.

The car was then placed onto another tow truck before being driven away, contributing to the length of time motorists had to wait for traffic to be able to proceed again.

A QFES firefighter at the scene said at that time of day as you head northbound, the glare from the sun makes it difficult to see through the windscreen.

There is a slight bend in the road at the location of the crash.

EWIR scheme gets combined funding

The Queensland Government and Federal Government have agreed to jointly fund the Emergency Water Infrastructure Rebate (EWIR) scheme, which provides financial relief for drought affected primary producers.

The EWIR scheme helps Australian farmers to better prepare, respond to and recover from drought, by allowing them to apply for rebates to buy and install on-farm water infrastructure to water livestock and permanent plantings.

Eligible farmers can claim up to 25 per cent of expenses for on-farm water infrastructure up to a maximum total rebate of $25,000.

The scheme will close on 30 June 2022 or when the funding is exhausted, whichever occurs first.

Nationally, the Federal Government has committed $100 million to the scheme.

The entirety of Toowoomba and Southern Downs regions are fully drought-declared.

AgForce CEO Michael Guerin, the head of an organisation that has lobbied for the EWIR scheme, said he was happy to see the State and Federal Governments put party politics aside in what is a significant win for the agricultural producers of Queensland.

“I am pleased that our long-term work with the State Government on developing a new drought policy is beginning to bear fruit,” Mr Guerin said.

“AgForce has been strongly representing our members and the broader Queensland agriculture industry for more than 12 months on this issue, initially raising concerns in May 2020 that the Federal Government had not renewed its contribution of funding to the long-running, successful, Queensland scheme.

Mr Guerin said the agreement means Queensland producers can effectively invest in water infrastructure both for now,

during drought, and to better prepare, respond to, and recover from any drought in the future.

“Anyone who has lived through even a few months of drought knows how devastating it can be to the land, livestock, and to communities,” he said.

AgForce had also approved of the State Government’s decision to co-fund dam desilting, an activity that stores water efficiently when rainfall increases, and seasons improve.

Bravehearts’ 777 Marathon celebrates 7 years with 7 marathons in Queensland - one locally

ATO warning on copy and pasting

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is alerting taxpayers that its sights are set on work-related expenses like travel claims that are predicted to decrease in this year’s tax returns.

Overall, around 8.5 million Australians claimed nearly $19.4 billion in work-related expenses in their 2020 tax returns.

Assistant Commissioner Tim Loh noted that COVID-19 has changed up people’s work habits, so we expect their workrelated expenses will reflect this.

“You can’t simply copy and paste previous year’s claims without evidence,” Mr Loh said.

Cambooya State School ATHLETICS TERM IS OFF AND RUNNING The Sports Captains and House Captains are leading the way at Cambooya State School.

The leaders are teaching the Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 students the skills necessary for ball games brilliance.

Each second lunch break, the Captains gather the students together and run them through rotational ball handling skills activities that they have devised.

We can already see a great improvement.

The leaders are happy to give up their play time to help the younger students gain confidence and learn the rules of the ball games we will play at our Athletics Carnival in Week 9.

“It is so much fun,” the leaders tell us.

It is great to see the smiles on the younger students’ faces and hear the laughs as they throw the ball around with the Captains.

As always, the ball games grid has been prepared by our brilliant groundsman Mr Don Parton.

The students really appreciate the time and effort Don puts in for them. “It makes our job easy,” the leaders said.

The Cambooya State School P&C wanted to help the kids at their school.

So they made breakfast for all the Year 3 and 5 students each day of the NAPLAN tests.

The students were treated to toasted ham and cheese sandwiches and hot milo, served with a smile by parent volunteers and Year 6 student leaders.

The students enjoyed the free breakfast.

Some even commented that it would help them think better.

Parent volunteers said it was rewarding to see the smiles on the students’ faces and hear the big “thank you” from the students.

Cambooya State School students enjoyed their breakfasts especially made for NAPLAN.

The local derby between the Wattles Warriors and Warwick Cowboys rarely fails to disappoint and this year’s battle was no different as the match hung in the balance right up to its conclusion, which saw Warwick triumph 24-16.
