At a recent meeting of the General Assembly’s Sixth Committee, Ms Martin, in her role as Political Counsellor for the Australian Government, presented views on international organisations. “International organisations are essential mechanisms which facilitate our ability as an international community to tackle effectively the complex shared challenges that we confront,” she told the international assembly. Ms Martin completed Grade 10 at Oakey High School in 1994. During her time at the school, she was a member of the Aboriginal and Islander Tertiary Aspiration Program and the Oakey Swimming Club. She went on to study International Business and Political Science at Griffith University and was awarded a National Indigenous Cadetship with Customs and later entered a graduate program run by

Ms Martin than her family, the Martins and Hamlyns, some of whom still reside in Oakey. Her grandfather, Len Hamlyn, said he always knew Lou-Ellen was destined for success. “She is a very smart little girl,” he said.
“When I watched her speak at the UN, I was that much in tears that I didn’t know what she said. “One of her teachers, Mrs (Shirley) Bernays always said she was one of the smartest students she ever taught.” Continued on page 3
