Molly wins national prize

The 22-years-old Kingsthorpe woman had been named in the top three last year and in 2020 has gone one step further. It was Ms Sage’s project with lemna (or duckweed), a species of algae, that clinched the title for the young mill foreperson. “I wanted to create a project that I could really be passionate about,” she said. Her concept involves using the lemna as a biofuel to power feedlot machinery, such as boilers. She found the byproduct of the plant is also a highly nutritious cattle supplement with higher weight gain outcomes than many other feed options. She said feed also reduces the carbon emissions from the cattle. Ms Sage used the innovative concept as her entry into last year’s prize but more work, changes and experiments over the past year made the idea more achievable in a feedlot setting. She said she is working with the University of Queensland to make the idea more efficient before

six progressed to the second judging round where they undertook an interview with the judging panel, followed by a presentation to the ALFA Council on their essay topic.
