Olivia to chop for a cause

Despite only being 11-years-old, Kingsthorpe student Olivia Rodighiero is preparing to chop about 35cm off her long locks to raise funds for Variety’s Hair with Heart initiative as well as donate her hair to make a wig for someone who has lost their hair due to a medical condition.

Olivia has set her goal high for her fundraising challenge, aiming to raise $1,000 for Variety.

She is not far off her target with almost $800 raised with Olivia having until December to reach her goal.

Although Olivia has always wanted to help others, a teacher provided the inspiration for her challenge.

“I have always wanted to do something like this after my teacher, Ms Styles, shaved her head,” she said.

“I am kind of nervous, but I know it will be okay.

“I am cutting my hair to my shoulders, so I will have some left.”

Olivia is not going through the project alone with community members and Kingsthorpe State School getting on board to raise funds through a Crazy Hair Day. The school students and teachers will also be cheering her on when she finally gets the chop on December 9.

New Hope Group Ballot paper finalised rejects OCAA claims in Groom by-election

New Hope Group has rejected suggestions by Oakey Coal Action Alliance (OCAA) that the State Government has sneaked through approvals for the expansion of New Acland mine.

The claims relate to the Regional Interest Development Approval (RIDA) which was issued by the Department of State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning (DSDMIP) on August 25.

A statement from OCAA and Lock the Gate Alliance said the department “quietly waved through” the approvals without notifying landholders or other groups.

OCAA president and alpaca farmer Aileen Harrison said the decision to approve the RIDA over the area was disgraceful at a time when she and others were challenging the project in the High Court of Australia.

“The legislation that is meant to protect this top-quality country has clearly failed, and must be urgently reformed by the reinstated Palaszczuk Government,” she said.

“The soils New Acland now has approval to rip up and destroy are among the top 1.5 percent in the state.

“Land like this cannot be rehabilitated to its original quality once mined.

“The rehabilitation attempts by New Hope so far have proven this.

“The company has turned gold star cropping country into scrub that can barely feed cattle.”

New Hope Chief Operating Officer, Andrew Boyd called the claims absurd.

“The application for RIDA was submitted many months ago and publicly notified for more than the required 15 business days,”

Mr Boyd said.

“The Department considered the submissions and, on August 25, advised us the application had been granted.

“The Department published their decision on their website, as required under the legislation.

“Affected landowners then had 20 business days to appeal the approval.”

Mr Boyd said no one appealed the approval.

“These activists had ample opportunity to make submissions on our application and subsequent approval,” Mr Boyd said.

“Now, several months down the track, they are jumping up and down criticising the Government for doing its job.

“It is the role of Government departments to assess applications on their merit and either approve or refuse them.

“That is all that has happened here.”

Mr Boyd also rejected the outlandish claims by

local objectors that the Company’s rehabilitation efforts were below par.

“The rehabilitation at New Acland is some of the best in the world,” Mr Boyd said.

“We have independent scientific evidence that the grazing land is better now than it was pre-mining and a large section of our rehabilitated land has been certified by the Department of Environment and Science.

“To say land cannot be rehabilitated back to its original state is clearly false.

“It should be obvious to all but a very limited number of objectors that the project stacks up.”

Despite their differing views, both parties still await the decision of the High Court or for the outstanding applications for Stage 3 to be approved by the State Government.

Following the ballot draw on Friday, Oakey district voters will be able to make their choice from the four candidates contesting the seat of Groom in the upcoming byelection, scheduled for Saturday, November 28.

There are four candidates running for the seat of Groom.

Toowoomba based engineer and Liberal National Party (LNP) candidate, Garth Hamilton, will begin as the frontrunner with retiring MP and LNP member, John McVeigh, holding the seat with a strong margin.

Mr Hamilton drew third on the ballot with ‘Sustainable Australia Stop Over-development.

Stop Corruption.’ party member Sandra Jephcott taking the first place.

The Liberal Democrat candidate and retail store owner Craig Farquharson is second with Australian Labor Party (ALP) member and Toowoomba Region mayoral candidate, Chris Meibusch, rounding out the list.

EARLY VOTING The by-election early voting opens today, but unlike the recent State Election there are less options for local people to cast their vote before November 28.

The early voting centres are all located at Toowoomba and include: - Concannon College at USQ, Baker Street; - 21 Rocla Ct, Glenvale; - 180 Herries Street; and - 101 Mort Street.

All have different opening times and dates.

Early voting is also only open to people who are ‘eligible’, meaning that they are unable to vote on polling day due to travel, work, health problems or other issues.

POSTAL VOTE APPLICATIONS The Acting Australian Electoral Officer for Queensland, Adrian McCabe, said postal vote applications can be lodged until 6pm on Wednesday, November 25 but people should apply early.

“If you need a postal vote, please don’t leave it to the last minute,” Mr McCabe said.

“For some locations, an application left until the last minute creates the risk that the AEC simply can’t get

ballot papers to you, despite our best efforts.”

He said with differing COVID-19 circumstances it was more important than ever to consider the range of in-person and postal voting options available.

“When it comes to choosing your method of voting, carefully consider your personal circumstances and seek information from the AEC website as early as possible,” Mr McCabe said.

On November 10, 1887, James Cherry Snr. of Oakey Creek gifted an allotment of land (in the present Kent Street) to the Synod of the Diocese of Brisbane.

But it wasn’t until August 1897 that the

tender of H. Mutze for £121 received through H.W.K.Martin, architect, for the erection of the Anglican Church, was accepted.

The new church, to be known as St. Augustine’s

was officially opened on April 3, 1898.

At the Easter service on April 10, 1910 the parishioners decided to obtain the consent of Church authorities for the removal of the church across the railway line to a site in lower Creek Street adjoining the rectory.

After the September 11, 1910 service, the church was dismantled and re-erected with extensive additions where it remained a place of worship for many years.

In November 1963, two blocks of land on the corner of John and Creek Streets were purchased by the Synod of the Diocese of Brisbane then during 1965.

The church was relocated to that site where it remained until 1980, the

Local section of Inland TRC trial to divert 3,000 items from landfill Rail one step closer

The Toowoomba and Darling Downs sections of the $11.2 billion national Inland Rail are now one step closer to commencement, with documents for the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) now released to the bidding consortiums.

Three consortiums have been approved to bid on the PPP which will form the Gowrie to Kagaru section, the largest and most complex of the entire project.

Toowoomba and Surat Basin Enterprise (TSBE) Energy and Infrastructure General Manager, Lance MacManus, said this is an important milestone in this major project.

“With the Toowoomba and Darling Downs sections of Inland Rail providing 2,000 jobs and four to five years of construction, this is a fantastic milestone to reach,” MacManus said.

The PPP will be a contract between the Federal Government, State Government and private funding with long term operations and maintenance contracts.

This type of construction contract is not new to our region with the recently completed $1.7 billion Toowoomba Bypass delivered under a similar model.

Inland Rail is an even bigger project that will involve the construction

of 126 kilometres of rail between Gowrie, near Toowoomba, to Kagaru, which is about 60 kilometres south of Brisbane, as well as the operation and maintenance for 25 years.

“The engineering challenges of traversing the Great Dividing Range means we will need substantial infrastructure construction, including a new 6.5km tunnel, ” Mr MacManus said.

“The winning consortium’s obligations will include the construction of three tunnels in the Toowoomba, Little Liverpool and Teviot ranges of 6.5 kilometres, 1.1 kilometres and 1 kilometre respectively, as well as 126 kilometres of single and dual gauge rail tracks, 37 bridges and 21 viaducts.”

Mr MacManus said TSBE will be engaging with the bidding consortiums, and encourages businesses looking at being part of this once in a lifetime project to look at how they can get involved.

Grow a monster pumpkin and squash for the Ekka

It’s time to make room in the veggie patch, with entries opening tomorrow for the Royal Queensland Show’s (Ekka) Giant Pumpkin Competition.

The iconic competition tests the growing skills of farmers, students and gardeners to see who can harvest the heaviest giant pumpkin.

More than $2,600 in prize money is up for grabs, with entries weighing over 80kg eligible for the coveted Champion Heaviest Pumpkin of Show award of $800.

The winning schools will also cash in, with $950 up for grabs - $450 for the win, $300 for second place and $200 for third.

The competition is

curriculum-aligned for Years 1, 9 and 10, planting the seed of knowledge about the importance of agriculture.

The competition record is currently held by giant pumpkin veteran Geoff Frohloff, with his 2015 entry crushing the competition, weighing in at 261.5kg.

A Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) mattress processing trial starting in November is expected to divert at least 3000 items from landfill per year when fully operational.

Textile exhibition continues at Rosalie Gallery

The vibrant, colourful textile exhibition titled ‘Gaia’ by artist local Iet van Vonderen will continue at the Rosalie Gallery, Goombungee until Saturday, November 28.

The exhibition is free to view and features a line-up of textile works inspired by the Crows Nest fires earlier this year as well as the artist’s travels through outback Australia and her interest in the culture of Indigenous Australians.

The name ‘Gaia’ comes from Greek mythology, and refers to the celebration of the connection between all

living things.

Ms van Vonderen and her family have lived near Goombungee since the 1980s, after emigrating from the Netherlands.

Oakey students have success in horse sports competition

Demonstrating maturity and horsemanship skills beyond their years, a small team of St Monica’s Catholic School students recently showed their abilities in a school horse sports competition held at Millmerran.

Oakey students Zane and Indy Renyard and Chyanne Wally performed well in the competition with Zane and Chyanne winning age champion in their respective year groups.

In her first horse event ever, Indy, also took home many ribbons.

The Toowoomba Regional Council’s (TRC) Oakey Youth Project will be hosting another free Summer Splash event on Saturday, December 5 at the Oakey Aquatic Centre, 64 Campbell Street, for local young people to enjoy.

Kids needed to help create Healthy Towns

Oakey children and their parents or guardians have a unique chance to help the environment and make whole communities healthier by participating in a pilot project designed to highlight opportunities to create safe ways to travel by foot or bike to school, parks and everyday places.

According to the Healthy Towns project lead, University of Southern Queensland (USQ) Associate Professor Tracy Kolbe-Alexander, this project will give children a ‘voice’ to let us know what helps or hinders their choice to walk or cycle.

She said the project needed 10 children in Year 5 (and one parent/guardian each) from Oakey as well as Highfields, Cambooya, Wilsonton and Harristown.

Associate Professor Kolbe-Alexander said the collective project would involve participants taking discovery walks using the Our Voice Discovery app, to record photos and provide comments describing things that make it easier or harder to travel by foot or bike to

school, parks and other locations.

Toowoomba Region Mayor Paul Antonio said Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) was pleased to join forces with USQ, Safer Toowoomba Regional Partnerships (Obesity Prevention Focus Group), Toowoomba and Surat Basin Enterprise (TSBE) and the Darling Downs and West Moreton PHN, and to partner with the Stanford University Our Voice initiative, to implement the project across the Toowoomba Region.

Strategies for managing high Grants open to establish moisture grain in storage drought hubs

The increased chance of storm rain and hail damage predicted for this summer is expected to create challenges for southern Queensland growers who may need to work around the clock to get crops into storage.

But the challenge of harvesting doesn’t end at putting grain in the silo, with the Grains Research and Development Corporation’s (GRDC) Stored Grain Extension Team currently on call (1800 WEEVIL) to provide advice to growers storing grain at less than optimum moisture levels.

Queensland Department of Agriculture’s (DAF) senior development agronomist Philip Burrill, who is a member of the GRDC Stored Grain Extension team, said there were several key points growers needed to keep front of mind when it came to storing grain with high moisture levels.

“The current unsettled weather conditions across much of southern Queensland and northern NSW has seen growers harvesting early with grain at moisture levels of 14 to 17 per cent,” Mr Burrill said.

“To avoid storage quality problems, growers need to act quickly once grain is in the silo. Grain respires like most living organisms, which means it takes in oxygen to use with carbohydrates, which in turn generates carbon

“When grain has a high moisture content and is warm, the rate of respiration increases significantly.

“This is what causes grain to self-heat, similarly to a wet bale of hay.

“Without aeration cooling of high moisture grain in storage, the temperature rapidly increases.

“For example, it can reach

40 degrees Celsius and more within a few hours of being in a silo.

“This can result in serious ‘bin burnt’ grain damage and creates ideal conditions for moulds and insect pests.”

In summary, Mr Burrill said small aeration fans were useful for temporarily holding wet grain, but growers needed a plan to dry grain that involved

either a grain dryer (batch or continuous flow); aeration drying in silos with high output fans (15-25 L/s/t); or blending grain.

“Agricultural research is critical in increasing the productivity of our agriculture sector and must be both useful and accessible to our farmers and regional communities,” he said.

“That is why the National Agricultural Innovation Agenda is focused on strengthening our regions, increasing uptake of innovation, and establishing a culture of collaboration and entrepreneurship across our agricultural innovation system. The Hubs are an important initiative that will help achieve these objectives.

“The Hubs are an essential part of the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund, and are the centrepiece of the $86 million Drought Resilience Research and Adoption Program, which will help farmers and communities use innovation to become better prepared for future droughts.

“The Hubs will have a regional focus and bring research providers and

users together to address local drought resilience research, development, extension, adoption and innovation priorities.

“The more inclusive the Hubs are, the better — the whole point is to get people working together to ensure research and development is useful and used to build drought resilience. ”Hub members will be able to share research and knowledge across their region, work on co-design of projects and on ground delivery with an adoption and commercialisation focus.

“An independent Advisory Committee, to be appointed by early 2021, rather than a regional university will provide oversight across the Hubs, connecting the Hubs to each other and to national priorities and advances.”

Lions Club Oakey State School turns brings back red for Day for Daniel old classic

Oakey State School students and staff donned red clothing last week to recognise ‘Day for Daniel’, an annual event which aims to raise awareness for child safety and educate young people and their families on the best strategies to prevent students being a victim of crime.

Lions Club of Oakey members are getting into the Christmas spirit early selling their range of Christmas cakes, bars and puddings at the IGA arcade from last week.

Students from Prep to Year 6 took part in the initiative on Friday, October 30 by wearing red.

This year the theme of Day for Daniel is “Wear Red, Educate and Donate” and focuses on parents, carers, and educators beginning conversations with children and young people about personal safety.

The annual tradition for the local Lions Club has started early with members planning to sell the fundraising items every Wednesday and Friday from 10am to 2pm opposite the IGA store.

Cakes available to purchase include a 1.5kg

and 1kg version as well as small iced cakes.

The handy mini fruit cakes will also be up for sale as well as the traditional 900g Christmas puddings.

All funds raised go to support the work of the Lions Club.

Kaleb makes Local teen shines in Central Mustangs side Downs cricket debut

Oakey student and Bowenville player, Chaz Cheatley, stunned with the ball in his debut match for the Central Downs cricket representative side at the weekend, taking three wickets and three maidens in ten overs against a tough Warwick team.

Local student and Oakey Junior Rugby League player, Kaleb Stanton, has been named as part of the Under 18 Western Mustangs Mal Meninga Cup for 2021.

The selected players have already hit the ground running with training and other preparations already underway.

Kaleb is no stranger to representative sides having made the 2019 Australian Secondary School Rugby League team.

He also was named the Oakey region’s Junior Sports Award winner in 2019.

Cheatley’s bowling skills were the silver lining in the Central Downs close loss to Warwick in the windy, overcast and cold conditions at Harristown.

After losing the toss, Central Downs was sent into bat with the weather conditions making for an unpredictable innings for the batters.

The side finished all out for 147 runs.

Best with the bat was Bowenville’s H. Dhillon who scored 70 runs for 107 deliveries.

The fast swinging Warwick side then hit the pitch, meeting the Central Downs total, plus three extras, with four wickets to spare.

With a new ball Chaz began the bowling with his three wicket haul followed by Nobby’s Matthew Budden who bowled seven overs and finished with two wickets, two maidens and 31 runs.

While the match didn’t end in Central Downs’ favour, vice president Jason Lee said the team showed a lot of courage.

“Central Downs didn’t give in and fought until the end,” he said.

“They always considered themselves in the fight until the end.”

Rodney shares his Ruth Mason turns 102 passion for classic cars

Proving that longevity must be in her blood, local woman and McLean Care CWA House resident, Ruth Mason, last week celebrated her 102nd birthday.

From a bunch of car body parts and no engine, local resident Rodney Bowen transformed the puzzle pieces into a fully restored and roadworthy 1939 Chevrolet Sloper vehicle.

A lover of cars from a young age, Rodney said he always dreamed of owning a Chevrolet but always thought it would be beyond his reach.

Rodney said he would listen to ‘American Pie’

by Don McLean which features the lyrics “drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry”.

“I never thought I would actually own one,” he said.

It took Rodney about six years to turn the pieces into a restored Chevrolet which can comfortably match the speed of most vehicles on the Warrego Highway.

He said this is down to the engine which comes from a more modern Holden Kingswood.

Rodney said he has kept

the vehicle as authentic as possible, and made a few additions, such as mandatory blinkers and a Jaguar sun roof.

“Every nut, bolt screw has got a name and I have taken it back to as much original as I can,” he said.

“It’s all steel, no plastic she’s a real car.”

Rodney said he is hoping to share his prized vehicle with other local residents.

“I’m open to people using it for formals or weddings,” he said.

“I want people to get joy out of it too.”

NHW Meeting

The next Oakey Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) meeting is planned for Tuesday, December 1 at the Oakey Community Centre from 6.30pm.

This will be a short meeting followed by dinner at the RSL for the annual function.

Oakey residents are welcome to join the NHW group for either or both.

The NHW is an important group in the region which connects police and the community for increased crime prevention and resolution.

Ruth was born on November 4, 1918 to Fredrick Albert Frank and Annie Vohland.

She married local John Mason in Toowoomba on January 13, 1944 and, following his discharge from World War II duties, the couple settled in Linthorpe where they farmed dairy cattle, pigs and grain.

After a few moves to Toowoomba and Broxburn, in 1983 they made a home at Biddeston.

A hard working farmer’s wife, Ruth always seemed destined to live past her 100th birthday with her mother, Annie Frank, passing away in 1991 aged 99 and her younger sister Daisy passing away in her 93rd year.

Funds raised at Jacko’s Hawaiian Pig Day Out

A great crowd attended the Quinalow Hotel recently for Jacko’s Hawaiian Pig Day Out which was the fifth cancer fundraising event hosted by the Riethmuller family in memory of Wayne ‘Jacko’ Riethmuller.

Due to COVID restrictions the traditional bowls day was not able to be held, but instead the Riethmullers organised ‘Jacko’s Hawaiian Pig Races’ so that much needed funds could still be raised for the Queensland Cancer Council and St. Andrew’s
