Making a difference

At Springwest we make a difference. Not only do we support our students to achieve academically but we care about their wellbeing and ability to make good moral choices.

Inspirational education with people who care. We make a difference every day.

Principal’sWelcome

I am extremely proud to be the Principal of Springwest Academy; a vibrant, mixed comprehensive school serving the local community of Feltham.

Simon Hart, Principal

At Springwest, we believe that everyone deserves a great education. We care wholeheartedly about the development of all our students in order to enable them to achieve their academic potential and to thrive in all aspects of life.

We are fortunate to have beautiful outdoor spaces which include both raised and sunken gardens as well as playing fields, two astro pitches and a MUGA. Our outstanding facilities are regularly used by the local community at evenings and weekends.

Our students behave in a polite, kind and responsible manner which is achieved by our consistent and fair use of ‘Springwest Expects’. The Academy has a real sense of togetherness and our teachers are proud to teach ‘Great lessons - every period, every day’.

We pride ourselves on providing an ambitious, rigorous, knowledge-rich curriculum and introduce students to challenging and thought provoking content from the start of Year 7. In addition to knowledge, we see understanding and memory to be at the heart of learning and therefore students are given opportunities for extended discussions and writing within all of their subjects as well as regular recall quizzes.

At Springwest we have developed Prep sessions which allow students to start the day in a purposeful manner by either reading, completing silent study or attending a co-curricular club.

We are an inclusive school and have a strong pastoral support system, including a designated member of the Senior Leadership Team, Head of Year and Pastoral Mentor for each year group. Students with SEND or EAL are well supported by specialist teachers within mainstream lessons and smaller numeracy and literacy groups. In addition, we have two Local Authority resourced Centres which provide support for students with physical disabilities and autism .

From the start of their Springwest journey in Year 7, students study character education. This immerses them in moral decision making, ethical debates and self-reflection. We are committed to providing students with many opportunities for virtue development through modelling, teaching and co-curricular provision including Springwest Scholars and Springwest Shines.

At Springwest, our core values are simple and set clear expectations for us all:

WeSpringwestAre

Be Polite Be Kind Be Ready to Learn

We know that academic outcomes are vital but that they only form part of the whole educational picture. Therefore we provide students with many opportunities to both expand their horizons and to develop morally.

In Food Technology we learn how to be healthy and in PSHE we learn about how to have good mental health. We are encouraged to be reflective and responsible for ourselves and those around us.

Joe, Year 7

Soraya, Year 8

Everyone is given an opportunity to excel.

Ú Oracy - To improve verbal communication, deepen understanding and facilitate the application of new knowledge, students are encouraged to collaborate, discuss and debate.

Ú Cultural Capital - To increase ambition, students are exposed to a range of knowledge and experiences which broaden their horizons.

PowerfulKnowledge

Ú Reading - To widen vocabulary, increase knowledge and improve literacy, students are presented with a range of texts and benefit from dedicated focused reading time.

To narrow the attainment gap and support successful learning, both now and in the future, our curriculum focuses on the following three pillars:

To enable this, we provide an ambitious, knowledgerich curriculum for all our students, in order to promote social justice. All of our students are entitled to acquire the “powerful knowledge” that will enable them to move beyond their everyday experiences and ultimately be successful members of society.

At Springwest, we define learning as ‘Understanding + Memory’ and expect our teachers to deliver ‘Great lessonsevery period, every day’.

Students study a wide range of subjects in their first three years at Springwest covering English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Religious Education (RE), Languages, Information Technology (IT), Physical Education (PE), and Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE). Alongside these subjects, students study a range of creative subjects such as Art, Food, Performing Arts and D esign & Technology

Caitlin, Year 8

Key Stage 3 (Years 7 to 9)

Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11)

We offer a broad and ambitious range of subjects to study at KS4. Alongside core subjects, students can choose more specialised options such as Engineering, Early Years, Food & Catering, Photography and Travel & Tourism. We also give students the opportunity to study at Logic Studio School, which is part of our Multi-Academy Trust, where they can choose to study Creative Media, Computer Science and Business Studies.

I really like the school’s focus on oracy because I feel like people don’t learn if they don’t give feedback to the teacher. If you don’t get the chance to regularly recall knowledge, you will not keep this knowledge in your mind. Oracy gives us the power to form our own opinions.

At Springwest, we are clear that learning is the main thing and therefore students are expected to work to the best of their ability at all times. Our behaviour policy is firm but fair and allows us to create a calm and purposeful environment both within lessons and around the school.

Our behaviour policy ‘Springwest Expects’ reinforces our high expectations of student behaviour.

SpringwestExpects

Teachers are fair and the ‘Springwest Expects’ policy helps students to regulate their behaviour. Nikola, Year 7

Autistic Resource Centre

Autistic Resource Centre (The ARC)

The National Curriculum

Our specialist centres are fully integrated into our school community. We are proud to be an inclusive school and care wholeheartedly about meeting the needs of all of our students.

Partnership

The school cannot consider requests for placements in our centres that have not been agreed by the London Borough of Hounslow’s SEND Team.

ARC Students have access to a team of support which includes speech and language therapists and occupational therapists. We can also access other types of support from outside agencies when necessary.

We cater for students who have been assessed as being on the autistic spectrum and would benefit from access to mainstream curriculum. The curriculum for ARC students is modified to focus on communication, behaviour, social interaction and developing life skills.

The Integrated Multidisciplinary Team

All our ARC students have access to the full National Curriculum at Key Stage 3 and 4 and are included in mainstream lessons (according to their needs). All students have access to specialised programmes tailored for them - this often includes lessons in small groups taught by a specialist teacher.

At Springwest, we have two specialist centres for a small number of students with autism and physical disabilities. Places at these centres are commissioned by the Local Authority for students who meet the criteria for admissions.

ARC families are a vital part of our community. We support them in a variety of ways through daily contact via regular progress meetings and opportunities for parents/carers to meet and chat over a coffee.

Centre for Students with a Physical Disability

The Centre is fully equipped with a range of moving and handling equipment, including several tracking hoists. Staff are trained annually in manual handling and moving of students. Students’ personal care needs are also carefully met. We have additional ramped areas, two lifts, automatic double doors and five accessible toilets across the school site. Additional specialist equipment is specifically matched to individual students’ needs. Therapy provision for students within the Centre is provided through the NHS with support from Centre staff.

The Curriculum

All students have access to the full curriculum. Withdrawal from mainstream lessons to the Centre for interventions takes place according to student need.

The Centre firmly believes that the best outcomes for our students can only be achieved through a strong partnership between school and parents and carers. We also believe that it is crucial to involve the young person themselves in this partnership. All students have a member of staff who acts as a key worker and there is frequent home contact to report on progress.

Inclusion

All our students have access to the full National Curriculum at Key Stage 3 and 4 and are included in mainstream lessons (according to their needs). Students are also supported to go on trips and residential placements.

The Centre at Springwest has accommodated students with physical disabilities since 1992. We are proud of our success in integrating students with a wide range of often complex physical and sensory needs.
