Dear Parents, Carers and future Southgate students

WELCOME TO SOUTHGATE SCHOOL

We are delighted that you have been offered a place at our school You have done particularly well to get a place here as we had well over 1,000 applications for our 240 places, so now that you are here, you must take advantage of all the exciting opportunities that we will give you.

It is very good news that you will be coming to a school that is strongly committed to excellent teaching, alongside a caring and supportive pastoral system. We believe that this makes for happy students and happy students are invariably successful students.

Transition to secondary school is one of the biggest and most significant changes in your educational journey to date, but whilst some nerves about joining a new school are normal, you should be excited about the new experiences that await you and all the new friends that you will make here. We have years of experience in making sure that new Year 7 students have a safe and pleasant start to their time with us, so I am confident that you will be just fine.

Whilst some of our transition programme will be done online, you are invited into school on 20thJune 2025 for your induction day when you will meet with your new schoolmates and teachers.

I hope you found our online Welcome Event on Tuesday 11th of March useful and informative. This Transition Welcome Pack will provide you and your parents with details about our upcoming events and activities designed to help you settle into Southgate School, long before your first day in September.

Last year our students achieved fantastic results, well above the national average, with lots of students going onto top universities. We believe that our school will continue to go from strength to strength and we look forward to a very exciting and promising future which, I am pleased to say, you will now be a part of.

I am confident that your time with us will be happy and filled with many achievements and successes. Life at Southgate School is fast and fun, vibrant and full of enrichment activities, including after school activities that you will be expected to join in with. We believe that learning does not stop at the classroom door and that it is through these enrichment activities that you will really make strong friendships and truly make the most of your time with us.

I look forward to meeting you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Dear Parent/ Carer,

Yours faithfully,

Physical Education

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the Physical Education department and give you a brief indication of what you can expect in PE.

Our Intention

The Physical Education curriculum at Southgate aims to provide opportunities for our students to experience, enjoy and excel in high quality PE and school sport. We incorporate a diverse range of activities which offer life-long learning through aspects of challenge and competition.

The Curriculum

The PE facilities are extensive at Southgate School. The sports and activities Year 7 have the opportunity to cover, for both boys and girls are:

• Invasion sports: football, basketball, netball, handball and rugby

• Net and racket sports: badminton, tennis, volleyball and table tennis

• Athletics: track and field events

• Fitness: circuit training, body conditioning and exercise to music

• Striking and fielding: cricket, rounders, softball

• Aesthetics: gymnastics, trampolining and dance

• Outdoor and Adventurous Activities: orienteering, problem solving, teamwork and leadershipbased activities

PE Kit

Our PE kit is available to purchase from Smiths Schoolwear. The compulsory items include: the white polo t-shirt, navy shorts and trainers. Optional items include jogging bottoms, half zip training top and leggings. All PE kit is embroidered with the Southgate school logo. PE lessons are both indoor and outdoor. It is important that students are prepared for both throughout the year. Please ensure all items of PE kit have names or initials on them. This is helpful in identifying kit and returning it to the owner quickly if it was misplaced. All jewellery, including stud earrings and watches, must be removed for PE and hair should be tied back away from face.

If a student is unable to participate in PE, they must have a letter from a parent / carer explaining the nature of the injury and giving an indication of time they will not be able to participate for. Long term injuries require a doctor’s note. All students are expected to change into PE kit every lesson, even if they are not physically taking part. Students will adopt other roles within the lesson such as official and / or coach and need to be dressed appropriately.

PE clubs and fixtures

To support learning, a broad range of extra-curricular clubs are on offer after school which focus on key skills, techniques and building a cohesive team environment. There is an extensive competition sports calendar that gives students the opportunity to compete against other schools within the Borough of Enfield and beyond. Sports trips are incorporated into the school calendar and include opportunities to attend residential trips to adventure centres, ski trips abroad, and netball tours.

I look forward to seeing you in PE and at clubs as soon as possible.
