program highlights

Students in the Medical Laboratory Science concentration complete three years of study followed by one year of full-time clinical laboratory training.

Clinical laboratory training is completed at the Cleveland Clinic School of Medical Laboratory Science. Students remain enrolled at CSU during their training year to remain eligible for financial aid.

Successful completion of the program leads to a BS degree in Biology from CSU and national certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.

professional outcomes

Since 2021, students completing the affiliated clinical training program at the Cleveland Clinic School of Medical Laboratory Sciences have had a 100% job placement rate.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, laboratory scientists are well compensated, with median pay approximately 25% higher than the median pay for all workers.

opportunities

Medical Laboratory Science students at Cleveland State University develop highly sought after laboratory,

analytical and organizational skills.

The clinical training program at the Cleveland Clinic School of Medical Laboratory Sciences includes seven major areas of laboratory work: chemistry, hematology, immunohematology, immunology, laboratory operations, microbiology and molecular diagnostics.

Individual and group exercises during the clinical year give students hands on experience in techniques including, but not limited to, collection and analysis of blood samples, blood banking, serological testing for infectious disease, urinalysis and karyotyping. Training is conducted in a state of the art clinical laboratory setting.

Even before engaging in clinical training, many Medical Laboratory Sciences students work in CSU faculty research labs. Such research experiences give students a head start in preparing for their clinical training, as well as opportunities to generate new knowledge while participating in biomedical research.
