“When economic times are tough, we all have to work harder to identify new opportunities to maintain business growth” says Grant Macdonald, Managing Director of Codelocks. One option is to look and see what we can learn from working closely with others in the same industry. Grant outlines how locksmiths must take the time to discover how and why they need to keep up with the latest access control products – rather than just sticking to what they already know. Hickleys Automotive Academy continues to go from strength to strength with the addition of another well-designed new course, and accreditation from the Career Transition Partnership granted the company Preferred Supplier Status. David Cameron described burglary as a crime of violence as the Conservatives set out plans to give homeowners more rights against intruders who break into their homes. The PM branded burglary a ‘crime of violence’ as he backed plans to give householders more powers against intruders. “When that burglar crosses your threshold, invades your home, threatens your family, they give up their rights,” he said. Speaking at his Party’s annual conference, where Chris Grayling, the Justice Secretary, later outlined the proposal dubbed “batter a burglar,” the Prime Minister revealed that he himself had been a victim of several break-ins. budgets and provide a more manageable security system. Holistic security is the application of several security systems integrated to work as one. It is also, Tina says, a ‘single supplier solution’ that is translating to hardware products and security systems, with holistic security seen as a more effective method for providing building access and protection – something locksmiths should be aware of, and can become integral to its delivery. CCTV by its very nature will always be a contentious issue. But there is no doubt that it is here to stay. It is how you use it that counts, says Alex Carmichael of the BSIA, responding to criticism from Andrew Rennison, the first surveillance commissioner. A timely reminder that the change of seasons and dark nights mean many more opportunities for criminals, and so present more opportunities for locksmiths and other security professionals to publicise their services to domestic and commercial markets through as many channels as possible. LOCKSMITHS HAVE SOME INTERESTING HOBBIES…. Following requests from LSj readers, we are re-commencing our popular series on what locksmiths get up to in their spare time. In the last series, we met an auto locksmith lady with a penchant for fast motorbikes, a locksmith who took to the air with a glider to de-stress after a hard day – another who got his kicks exploring the ocean depths all over the world; and a man who wasn’t Scottish but who’d become expert at the bagpipes and looked mighty impressive in full Highland dress. If you have an interesting or unusual pastime (anything legal that is!) and would like to take part in the new series, please email pat@clearview-uk.com with your full contact details and we will do the rest. CELEBRATING 18 years together Kenrick has celebrated 18 years of working with the Bristolbased trade door and window fabricator, MB Frames. And to mark the special milestone, MB Frames has become one of the first fabricators in the industry to use Kenrick’s new Excalibur XL shootbolt locking system. Excalibur XL is fitted as standard on MB Frames’ Classic chamfered and Encore fully sculptured window systems. The Secured by Design approved multipoint locking system is said to be ‘extremely quick and simple’ to fit. Durable and reliable, it benefits from a reinforced pressed steel faceplate to provide superior strength and reliability. Excalibur XL also features a robust unhanded die-cast gearbox and patented bi-directional die-cast claws.

The Excalibur XL system is covered under MB Frame’s Royale security pledge, which is one of the most comprehensive guarantees available in the industry. It provides free security cover, up to £500 towards the cost of replacing a damaged window and up to £500 towards the cost of replacing stolen property for a period of 10 years. Phil Purnell, MB Frames’ general manager, said: “Having worked with Kenrick for many years, we know that their service is always superb and their products are of a consistently high standard, whilst representing great value for money.” Steve Williams, Kenrick’s sales and marketing director added: “In such an unpredictable and competitive climate, we are delighted to celebrate such a long standing relationship with MB Frames.”

Victims to pick offenders’ punishment Victims of crime will be able to decide how offenders are punished, under new proposals outlined by Home Secretary Theresa May. Ms May said she planned to allow victims to choose the penalty imposed on criminals, including replacing damaged property, paying compensation or simply saying sorry. She pledged home owners should no longer feel “powerless” against offenders, and promised to “put the victim first”. “One of the big problems for the victims of anti-social behaviour is that they feel powerless,’ Ms May said. “Somebody does

something to them or their property and they feel they don’t get reparation, or feel they are not part of the process.” She added they could also stipulate the perpetrator repaired property they had broken, or carried out work in the community. If criminals refuse

to accept the conditions, they will be subject to normal court proceedings. It is understood the options for punishments, called the “community remedy” will be laid out in a menu-style list for police commissioners to work from. Ms May added: ‘It’s also about giving victims transparency. One of the complaints I hear very regularly from victims is that they have reported an incident to the police but they don’t know what happens after that. It’s about putting the victim first. They’ve suffered and they should have a say in what happens.”

WORKING TOGETHER TO UNLOCK NEW BUSINESS By Grant Macdonald, Managing Director, Codelocks “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success’. Henry Ford When economic times are tough, we all have to work harder to identify new opportunities to maintain business growth. One option is to look and see what we can learn from working closely with others in the same industry. By putting greater emphasis on close working relationships and sharing knowledge success will be easier to achieve. If we apply this theory to the access control industry then locksmiths can learn a great deal from lock manufacturers, and vice versa. But how do we make this work in practice, and what do we need to do together in order to maximise business potential? Take the time to invest We understand that when locksmiths run their own businesses, time can be the limiting factor when trying to keep up to date with the latest product developments and technology. There are thousands of access control products on the market today, all of varying quality and purpose. But just sticking to what you know can be limiting for the long-term future of a business and will not encourage customers to adopt new products when they are launched into the market. For example, take basic digital mechanical locks. Many of these products have been sold and installed for a variety of applications in schools, hospitals and universities since they were introduced in the early 1980s. Since then we’ve also seen the introduction of electronic digital locks, many of which can be used to upgrade the mechanical lock as they offer much more in terms of functionality. Yet mechanical locks are still being specified and this represents a huge opportunity for the locksmith who has taken the time to understand the benefits of the electronic digital lock over its mechanical counterpart.

Getting the most out of the manufacturers When looking for ways to create new revenue streams, locksmiths should take their lead from the manufacturers and make the most of opportunities or special offers when they arise. We are currently running free training courses for locksmiths at our HQ in Newbury, Berkshire. The training course is designed for those who want to refresh their technical knowledge of digital push-button locks and familiarise themselves with the full Codelocks mechanical and electronic product range. We give installation advice, as well as tips for servicing and programming. The training takes place in a hands-on environment, which is not something you can achieve by looking through wholesale catalogues. Gaining an in-depth understanding of the Codelocks product range will make it easier to identify new business opportunities, and give locksmiths more confidence to specify and recommend new products to their customers. So far the feedback has been very positive, with 100% of the participants agreeing they had benefited from spending a few hours in training and have gained practical knowledge they can use on a day-to day-basis.

NEW ADDITIONS TO ICONIC URMET RANGE Urmet has added several new and improved features to its iconic range of stainless steel door entry panels. The S-Steel now replaces the original K-steel range, which has been selling in the tens of thousands for well over a decade. As testament to Urmet’s dedication to manufacturing excellence, the company has maintained the classic design of the K-Steel but succeeded in making an already outstanding panel, even better. Originally launched in 2000, the K-Steel was, and still is to this day, the first and only modular stainless steel, vandalresistant panel to be IP45 and IK09 rated. Urmet’s product development team has based their new design around keeping these key performance features whilst at the same time creating a more aesthetically pleasing panel. The new S-steel range is smaller and cleaner looking but at the same time has the robust and quality feel that distinguishes Urmet products from that of other manufacturers.

The panel modules are based on the proven formula used in Urmet’s Sinthesi range so are quicker and easier to install within the frame. More importantly, however, is the fact that it’s now possible to integrate Paxton proximity panel mount readers (Paxton product code - 390-135). Back lighting LED’s are now white and are pre-arranged for daylight energy saving. The camera LED’s can be disabled so you can permanently power the camera to record the image via a CCTV system. Urmet have enhanced their DDA compliance by adding ‘call in progress’, ‘speak’ and ‘door is open’ voice commands to a new traffic light module and the colour camera now comes as standard with a 120 degree wide angle lens. Inductive loop modules are also still available. As expected, Urmet has made the new S-Steel compatible with all of their technologies including analogue, digital, 2Voice 2wire and IPervoice IP systems.

Another opportunity for locksmiths is to look for access control products that they can specify over and over again and purchase these products in volume from the manufacturers when they are offered at a discount. For example, we offer regular promotions on our CL600 product, which is a perfect ‘retro fit’ for other popular mechanical locks on the market. The CL600 is less expensive, has more features and is designed to fit in the existing door preparation making it the ideal choice when tasked with finding a replacement lock. It’s not all one-sided Knowledge sharing shouldn’t be all one-sided. Manufacturers have a lot to gain from the feedback locksmiths can give them. Having day-to-day contact with end users, locksmiths have a valuable insight into the applications for the locks they specify. Feeding this information back to the manufacturers, along with information about the common problems end-users face is invaluable market knowledge. For example, the feedback we gathered from the locksmiths who attended our training sessions suggested that end-users perceive the programming of electronic push-button locks as difficult. In fact electronic locks are as easy to use and operate as mechanical ones but with added benefits such as; programming at the keypad, multiple codes, one-time user codes, auto and remote release options. Another locksmith raised the issue of the wide availability of cheaply produced electronic access products that fail on a regular basis. As a manufacturer, we can use this

‘The working relationship between locksmiths and manufacturers is symbiotic’ information to help us develop innovative products and further improve quality. In fact, Codelocks already has several initiatives in the pipeline that will help make electronic push-button locks more user friendly. All our products are designed in Europe and manufactured at our own facility in China and by having complete control of the manufacturing process we can offer high quality, reliable products. Win-win situation The working relationship between locksmiths and manufacturers is symbiotic. Success for one is critical for the success of the other. We’d like to continue working closely with locksmiths and would like to hear from anyone interested in participating in our free training sessions later on in the year, or willing to test our products and write a review, or with interesting or unusual applications for our products. We’re always on the lookout for success stories that feature our products, locksmiths and their clients. Everyone of those persons has AT LEAST one key that they can lose, leave in their house or break in their lock. This means a quick, easy and profitable lockout situation for you. For example there is 7.5 million people living in London with each person owning an average of 3 keys. That’s a possibility of 22.5 million keys / locks that will need to be dealt with at some stage. This is of course totally upto you on how you run your pricing but we do discuss costings and prices on the course. When you have such little overheads (normally just a van, tools, stock and phone) you can see how profitable it is to be a locksmith. LOCKING INTO THE HOLISTIC APPROACH As building costs continue to come under scrutiny, Tina Hughan, Head of Marketing for ASSA ABLOY UK, examines how a holistic approach to security can help maintain budgets and provide a more manageable security system. Increasingly, the introduction of legislation, such as the recent CE marking recommendations, and the amalgamating of service providers has led to a preference for a full specification solution. Not only is this seen as a more efficient and cost-effective way of working but it is also recognised as a greater assurance on the quality of products and services. This ‘single supplier solution’ is also translating to hardware products and security systems, with holistic security seen as a more effective method for providing building access and protection – something locksmiths should be aware of, and can become integral to its delivery. Holistic security essentially refers to the application of several security systems that are integrated to work as one cohesive security structure – this can be applied across multiple applications, such as education facilities, commercial premises and healthcare buildings. This follows the principle that security should be seen as an entire system, with individual elements retaining their distinctive functions but integrated to provide a holistic security system.

12

THE NOV/DEC 2012 ISSUE SPONSORED BY UNION

The purpose of this is that rather than working as autonomous components the individual security products enhance and work together to produce an effective system. In the same way that departments work more effectively when they are integrated and aware of the other’s function, the same can be said of security products and protocols. Underpinning most holistic security systems is security technology. This includes the basic elements such as door hardware and locking products through to complex access control products and corresponding software. The integration of these elements is crucial to providing a sound base for the introduction of secondary security considerations. The next area considered in a holistic security programme is adding staff and basic procedures. Not only must the base layer of products be integrated with staff – their ability and movements - as well as procedures, it is also vital to request feedback from staff for the continual improvement of security practices and policies. SIMPLICITY IS KEY When planning to apply this approach, simplicity is key. Building up security in layers or extending systems and buildings over time can easily lead to interference, overlap and disengagement. To ensure all

parts connect and operate simultaneously both within and between the layers, the simpler the system or process the better for ensuring optimum correlation. Essentially, this approach to security planning avoids the ad-hoc addition of systems that do not interface with current products and technologies, ensuring all elements interact with one another. Holistic security is believed to deliver the optimum outcome in terms of cost, efficiency and effectiveness. So, what does it mean in practice for locksmiths. As this approach is becoming more popular across the board in both commercial and residential builds, locksmiths not only need to be aware of its fundamentals but also how their services and products work within this method. An understanding of the principles and holistic framework can lead to greater profit margins for locksmiths, as the systematic approach makes upselling and upgrading to higher value goods an ‘easier sell’. Products that interface with others or can form multiple functions are more likely to command higher profits and their benefits can be seen within an entire security system, justifying any potential upgrade in specification.

In addition, as locksmiths begin to view a building’s security as an entire system rather than individual components, this creates the opportunity for add-on and value added sales. Whilst locksmiths may not necessarily supply a full access control, CCTV or fire alarm offering there will be elements within a holistic approach where cross-selling is appropriate. This potential cross-selling and holistic approach should encourage locksmiths to stock a greater depth of products, as well as those that command a higher price. Increasingly end users and specifiers

prefer to obtain products and solutions from a single source, ensuring quality and simplifying the specification process, therefore locksmiths can potentially win more specification work and lucrative projects by stocking solutions that fulfill a wider spectrum of security needs. As discussed, the holistic approach does not call for a complete convergence of skills and products – transforming locksmiths into system integrators and vice versa, but there are some areas within the existing product offering where locksmiths can benefit. BOOSTING PROFITS Masterkey systems are a clear example of how locksmiths can boost profit margins within a holistic approach. By recognising how doors within a house of multiple occupancy or commercial premise can be upgraded and suited to form part of a key control system, locksmiths can earn extra revenue, whilst delivering a system that adopts a more holistic approach to security with the ability for future expansion. Similarly, locksmiths and architectural ironmongers should also

look to upsell from rack and pinion to electro-magnetic door closers by adopting the holistic approach to security. More sophisticated electro-magnetic door closers can be integrated with building fire alarm systems, automatically setting the door to self-closing mode when activated. This enables facilities managers to see safety and security mechanisms within a building as a symbiotic relationship, ensuring both systems operate in conjunction with each other as well as enhancing each others features. Whilst locksmiths may not be in a position to supply a complete security solution it is crucial to be aware of the holistic approach to security in order to better service customers’ needs, ultimately generating more business. In addition, a greater understanding of this security trend will enable locksmiths to capitalise on the opportunities it presents within relevant product areas, ensuring ASSA BLOY customers can generate the most profit and greater revenue potential. www.assaabloy.co.uk/aareasons

MUL-T-LOCK IS KING OF THE CASTLE AT PECKFORTON Mul-T-Lock’s patented MT5 cylinder platform has been installed at historic Peckforton Castle in Cheshire by Safeguard (NW) Ltd, to restrict the unauthorised distribution of keys and ensure its security can operate from a single master key suite, without compromising on the medieval-style architecture. Peckforton Castle has been transformed into a luxury hotel with conference facilities and is also licensed for weddings. But with a number of different cylinder platforms on site securing the castle, security was being compromised. In keeping with the historical ambience of the Castle, built in 1846, the owners required a system that would not ruin the style of the doors or affect the overall aesthetics of the Norman style architecture, now an English Heritage Grade 1 Listed Building.

Safeguard recommended Mul-T-Lock’s MT5 patented cylinder range, to update the security systems in place and ensure a consistent extra level of protection, which could be integrated with an electronic access control system and be flexible to accommodate possible future expansion. MT5 provides enhanced key security and strong tamper resistance. It has now been fitted throughout Peckforton Castle, without impacting on the aesthetics and only authorised personnel can now distribute keys. Christopher Naylor, Managing Director and Owner of Peckforton Castle, said: “Safeguard demonstrated the advantages of MT5 and I was especially impressed with the flexibility of the master key system and its ability to incorporate all of our key access requirements. The MT5 system has now been installed throughout the Castle, with minimum disruption to guests or everyday operations of the

hotel.” MT5 is the first cylinder in the UK to be supported by a unique key authorisation magnetic strip card, which must be presented to the registered MT5 locksmith before additional keys can be supplied to ensure tight control of key duplication. Martin Richardson of Safeguard added: “Peckforton Castle presented a number of challenges primarily due to the period construction of the doors and frames. The MT5 offered a perfect solution not only because of the restrictions regarding key duplication but also the extensive profile of products available from Mul-T-Lock which suited all applications at Peckforton Castle.” Email: marketing@mul-t-lock.co.uk

Cameron: prisons must work for offenders There is no alternative to making “prisons work”, David Cameron has said, insisting criminals can be punished and rehabilitated at the same time. In a speech in London the PM said the debate on crime and punishment had become too “black or white”. Serious offenders must be imprisoned, but jails must have a “positive impact” on inmates, he argued. The speech came after Cameron had a difficult week, with Andrew Mitchell quitting as chief whip over his remarks to police officers; and confusion over energy policy. In a long-planned speech to the Centre for Social Justice, Mr Cameron sought to regain the initiative by insisting crime was an issue that “matters to all of us” and rejected characterisations of his views from both the left and right of the political spectrum. He stressed that personal responsibility was at the heart of the criminal justice system, meaning long prison sentences were the only “thinkable” punishment for certain serious offenders. But echoing comments made by Tony Blair in the 1990s, Mr Cameron said the Government must “think hard about dealing with the causes of crime” not just the results of crime. This meant more emphasis on crime prevention and, at a time when budgets were being cut and prison numbers stretched, priority being given to reducing re-offending.

To read more, visit www.locksmithjournal.co.uk

Critics have warned that Ken Clarke’s recent replacement by Chris Grayling as Justice Secretary signalled a hardening of the approach on sentencing, but the PM said he was still as committed to a “rehabilitation revolution” for prisoners. Labour said the coalition had cut police numbers and budgets, circumscribed judges and “let victims down.” Plans were announced in October to introduce a new offence of possessing firearms “with an intention to supply them to others”, carrying a maximum life sentence, designed to target “middle men” who import and traffic weapons for gangs.

BOOST PROFITS & FIGHT CRIME WITH UAP TRADELOCKS ‘Key fishing’ or ‘letter plate fishing’ is becoming common, but there is a simple, effective low-cost solution that can boost your profit potential. The UAP Letterplate Restrictor Shroud is 14.5” long and can easily be fitted over the letter plate on the inside of the door to stop the inner flap opening more than 40 degrees, preventing unwanted arms, sticks and fishing rods being poked through. It also restricts the view into the hallway so burglars will not be able to look through.

When used with the UAP Anti-Vandal Letterplate, the Restrictor Shroud makes an effective deterrent for the would-beburglar. The brushes face the exterior of the door, further hampering the view into the property. ‘Fishing’ is on the rise as security in cars improves. Immobilisers are now fitted to cars as standard and so the key is needed

to start them, so thieves are forced to steal the keys in order to steal the car. Key fishing is also used to gain access to houses. The Letterplate Restrictor Shroud is economical, extremely lightweight and is easily be stored in a van. www.TradeLocks.co.uk.

SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS AND BROADER FOCUS FOR MLA In this interview with The Locksmith editor, Pat Gwynnette, MLA development director, Dr Steffan George, explains how the Association is making real progress as it approaches the end of an eventful 2012 and the start of a New Year. I see that there have been some significant changes to the MLA website. Could you tell us more about this? Yes, our website, www.locksmiths.co.uk has recently undergone a major upgrade. This has been a key priority for the MLA this year to ensure that we are providing the best possible service to our members as well as to the public and the trade. In the absence of Government-backed licensing, the MLA aims to empower the public to make informed choices by providing a user-friendly website where they can source a reputable locksmith. The website includes an enhanced search function, allowing people to search both geographically and by area of specialism for their local MLA licensed; vetted, inspected and qualified locksmith. You can also search by postcode for MLA member companies in your area, and a ‘click on a region’ mapping device provides a visual tool for those looking for a locksmith in a specific area of the country. Lists of member locksmiths by region can be accessed at a click of the mouse!

local MLA member locksmiths, we believe the upgraded website reflects the MLA’s mission to make professional security advice accessible to all. Does the consumer-facing element of the website reflect a broader focus within the MLA on engaging with the public? Yes, absolutely. Concentrating on promoting members to the public, and of course commercial customers too, has been an important aspect of our strategy this year and will continue to be into 2013. It’s a priority for us to be viewed as a consumer-facing, approachable source of professional security advice as well as the go-to source for reputable, licensed, vetted and inspected locksmiths. Members already gain a significant amount of work from the website and we will be working hard to help this grow. We have an extensive PR programme already in place and indeed commenced as a platform for public outreach and promotion of the new site. This enables us to comment on

relevant news stories and provide useful advice, for example on how changes in legislation might affect members of the public. In response to recent changes in the legislation regarding squatting - it has been made illegal in residential but not commercial property - we put out advice warning owners of commercial property to be vigilant and review their security to ensure they do not find themselves in a vulnerable position. We have also sought to build and strengthen partnerships with organisations which aim to promote public security. You mention partnering with other organisations. Could you tell explain more about this? This has been a fundamental part of our strategy to engage with the public through as many channels as possible. In addition to the upgrades to the website and our PR outreach, we have also sought to consolidate links and forge partnerships

‘The website includes an enhanced search function, allowing people to search both geographically and by area of specialism for their local MLA licensed; vetted, inspected and qualified locksmith’ The website also provides a wealth of security advice and information which we hope will be useful to members of the public. This includes blog posts, advice sheets and FAQs grouped by topic for ease of navigation. Providing a strong link between members of the public and their

‘also collaborating with the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) in an initiative to expose scam locksmith operations’ with synergistic organisations. I’m delighted that the MLA has become an official partner of the Neighbourhood Watch and Home Watch Network (NHWN) as we’re united by a common mission to promote safer communities. With over 158,000 Neighbourhood and Home Watch schemes across the UK and over 7.9 million members, being affiliated with NHWN will enable the MLA to engage directly with members of the public interested in creating more secure communities. The MLA already has a strong track record of working with the police. We have recently worked alongside police forces across the UK, including amongst others the Met, Manchester and West Yorkshire Police in a drive to promote knowledge of security standards including knowledge on our sister security product testing company Sold Secure’s Diamond Standard SS312 for lock cylinders, developed to test for susceptibility of cylinders to snapping. We also have a strong relationship with the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) which has recently been active in promoting the Association not only via their social marketing but also at events they have attended. The MLA will build on this by being present once again not only at the prestigious Policing and Security exhibition but also the ACPO SBD Training event early next year.

The MLA is also collaborating with the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) in an initiative to expose scam locksmith operations, as featured in The Locksmith journal. Already being a corporate affiliate member of the Trading Standards institute, it’s very positive for us to have cemented our relationship with Trading Standards to bring rogue traders to justice. Our development of a nationally recognised locksmithing qualification and apprenticeship is also well underway and we look forward to unveiling it in the near future. These two strands of activity will help bring improved surveillance and regulation, enabling the public to have the confidence they deserve in the locksmithing industry. We are also working with English Heritage on a survey of their property managers to uncover some of the stories behind the locks and keys of Britain’s stately homes. Heritage is a growing area within the locksmithing trade and we plan to use the findings to promote heritage specialist locksmiths to the public. Through working with partner organisations, our aim is to raise public awareness of the MLA, its members, and the benefits of using an MLA approved locksmith. This should ensure that members of the public can be confident that they know where to go to find a locksmith who will have the

skills, knowledge and training to do a professional job. Looking forward to 2013, what is in the pipeline? We have recently launched a new ‘Associated Locksmith’ membership category, to open up the advantages of MLA membership to locksmiths who have been trading for at least 3 years and meet the vetting criteria of the association. A tailored membership package such as this enables them to join as ‘personal members’ and enjoy many of the benefits of MLA membership while making a smaller initial financial commitment. We have already had a lot of takeup for this new category and expect to see member numbers grow significantly throughout 2013 as well as working with those who’ve joined as associated locksmiths to help them become approved companies and thereby be able to use the logo and be promoted on the new website amongst other benefits. Of course, we will also be working alongside Skills for Security to launch our official locksmithing qualification and apprenticeship framework. Work on members benefits will continue at pace. We have a couple of significant benefits for company members in the pipeline that will make the membership subs even better value than they already are, as well as significantly helping members with some of the more bureaucratic aspects of running a company these days. And last but not least, we’re already gearing up for the MLA Expo which will be held at Telford International Centre on 13th – 15th September 2013. The 2013 event will be packed with training courses and networking opportunities, including a social event on the Saturday evening, giving locksmiths across the UK a chance to share knowledge, contacts and ideas. We’ve got some ideas up our sleeve to make the 2013 Expo one to remember – suffice to say it could prove a lucrative visit! Watch this space for more details...

To be held in the biggest manufacturing and consumption country in locks, Lock China 2013 aims to bring together brand enterprises, manufacturers, merchants and professionals.

The 2nd Guangzhou International Lock Industry Expo 2012 was successfully held in Guangzhou Jin Han Exhibition Centre in April 16th-18th 2012. Having attracted 165 domestic and foreign enterprises and covered an area of about 8000m2, this was the most professional lock industry exhibition with most exhibitors in China.

TORIES ON CRIME AGAINST HOUSEHOLDERS David Cameron described burglary as a crime of violence as the Conservatives set out plans to give homeowners more rights against intruders who break into their homes.

He said: “I’ve been burgled a couple of times when I lived in London, in North Kensington. There was one occasion when I left the keys in my car and they loaded up my Skoda and drove off. It is a horrible feeling when your house has been invaded”. The proposals mean that householders will be given protection under the law for fighting back against burglars unless they use “grossly disproportionate”

force. Chris Grayling plans to change the law “at the first opportunity” to give stronger legal safeguards to those who use force to protect their family or property. Mr Grayling said that he wanted to “finally lay the issue to rest once and for all” following a series of highprofile cases where home owners who have confronted criminals have been arrested. In the future, only those using clearly excessive force, such as stabbing a burglar who was

‘the Prime Minsister revealed that he himself had been a victim of several break-ins.’

already unconscious, should face the prospect of criminal action, he said. “The basic premise of the change is to get the law to a position where if you are in your home, and you are confronted by an intruder… then if, in the heat of the moment you use a level of force that in the cold light of day might seem disproportionate, the law will be on your side.” The Government has already changed the law in an attempt to ensure that those acting in a “reasonable” way when confronting burglars are not prosecuted. But Mr Grayling said that people still faced uncertainty and the threat of arrest and that new laws were now necessary.

H&S BLITZ COULD BE DANGEROUS Recent announcements by the Government that low risk businesses will be exempt from regular “burdensome health and safety inspections” from April 2013 risks generating more heat than light. The British Safety Council has cautioned that there is a real danger when health and safety is constantly characterised as a burden on business and an obstacle

to economic growth and job creation. There is clear evidence of the financial and social benefits well managed health and safety brings to both employers and employees. Alex Botha, Chief Executive of the Council, says: “The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and local authorities are charged with making adequate arrangements for the enforcement

ANDY GETS BACK BEHIND THE WHEEL!

After more than two decades away from motor rallying, auto locksmith car enthusiast 54 year old Andy Fagan got back behind the wheel to take part in the 55th Cambrian Rally which took place on 20th October in North Wales – on one of the toughest off-road forest rally routes in Britain. Andy and his elder son, Jack, run Andy Hagan & Son, a mobile auto-locksmith service covering Cheshire and North Wales. They specialise in electronics and much of their business comes from locksmiths who recommend them. Navigating for Andy in the Cambrian was Steve Griffith. The guys, who are the same age, have known each other since those early days but while Steve continued his involvement with the sport, reaching professional level, doing ‘gravel runs’ which are preliminaries on routes to be driven by world-class drivers, Andy had to give up rallying to concentrate on his family commitments. “As a young man, I was passionate about cars and rallying was very popular in this area (North Wales) so it was inevitable

that I’d want to get involved. There is a real buzz in pushing yourself to the limit. You have to concentrate totally. The unexpected does happen of course, but in rallying they call this ‘having a moment’. And if you don’t ‘have a moment’ then you’re just not trying hard enough!” But once Andy got married and had a family, he decided to give it up. “It is not a cheap sport and doesn’t fit in too well with having young children,” he said. “Now the boys are grown-up though, it seemed a good opportunity to give it another go.” Scarily, Andy and Steve had just 10 minutes in their car – a Ford Focus B7 – before the Cambrian rally started. “It was pretty daunting at first,” Andy said, “we started off a bit slow but through stages 2, 3 and 4 we built up some speed.

Then at stage 5 we clipped a hay bale on a tight bend which bent the steering arm. There was no time to get it fixed so we had so cut our speed for the remainder. Still, we did finish the course, coming in 23rd, and after such a long absence I am quite pleased to have achieved that!” The Ford Focus and whole back-up package was provided by a local company that specialises in the sport. “These rally cars today are a different breed from 20 years ago – in braking, performance, everything – they are amazing,” said Andy, who is clearly very serious about all cars – he is the proud owner of a sleek silver Porsche Boxster. Average speed on the 55th Cambrian was 60mph: “But it is not unusual to reach 100 mph,” Andy explained.

‘Rallying is not a cheap sport so Andy and Steve are hoping to find some sponsorship for future events to help finance them.’ Rallying is not a cheap sport so Andy and Steve are hoping to find some sponsorship for future events to help finance them. “Getting a sponsorship deal would be really great as we plan to continue for as long as we can,” he added. Andy prefers tarmac road rallies and he and Steve are already booked in for one on 13th November, so LSj wishes them both the best of luck.

Now in its 57th year (it has been running since 1955) the Cambrian is recognised as one of the best rallies in the UK. Organised from the beginning by the highly experienced members of the North Wales Car Club (NWCC), the event offers a real challenge for competitors of all levels, driving through some of the best forest stages, in some of the finest scenery in the UK. This year’s event, on 20th October was won by Luke Francis and John H Robert. Some 138 competitors in 27 different makes of cars ranging from historic marques such as an Austin Healey 3000 MKIII to the ultra-modern 1600cc Mini Cooper S World Rally Car and International competitors from Venezuela, South Africa, New Zealand and Belgium took part in the event.

For example, the terms of the agreement dictate guaranteed next working day deliveries for all orders placed before 5pm Monday to Friday and continual feedback on the accuracy of demand forecasting by individual product line. “We have shown that we are not only capable of meeting these demands week in and week out but also of responding to Safestyle UK’s commitment to continuous improvement with innovations in both

customer service and bespoke product development.” Mila delivers an average of more than 38,000 items to Safestyle UK’s Wombwell factory every week and, in the year leading up to the signing of the new agreement, has achieved on time in full delivery levels of 98.52%. Partnerships to grow small businesses Metro Bank will support up to £100m of lending for eligible businesses in London and the South East that are signed up to GrowthAccelerator, according to the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. The Government’s £200 million GrowthAccelerator service matches eligible companies with business experts to identify barriers to growth and ways to overcome them. Selected businesses receive help with securing finance, commercialising innovation or developing leadership and management capability.

More than 1,000 businesses have joined the programme since it was launched in May 2012.

‘to provide up to £100 million’ RBS Natwest has also agreed to promote the service across its nationwide network to its UK SME customers. Business secretary Vince Cable said GrowthAccelerator was designed to help the next generation businesses fulfil their potential. “Getting access to finance on reasonable terms is crucial to their success which is why I am delighted

with today’s pledge by Metro Bank to provide up to £100 million of lending to eligible businesses signed up to GrowthAccelerator”, he said. He went on: “It is good news for businesses that new entrants like Metro Bank are energising the market to support dynamic, fast-growing UK businesses. “ Vince Cable was in Cambridge and visited St John’s Innovation Centre, the region’s leading business hub for startups and one of the GrowthAccelerator partners, where he met 50 local businesses eligible to join the scheme and some already receiving coaching through it.

Another success for VBH greenteQ hardware London-based trade fabricator, Everglade Windows, a ‘much valued’ VBH customer for a number of years, recently switched to greenteQ for its door and window furniture and profile cylinders. Everglade’s installer customers are said to have welcomed the new hardware, ‘impressed’ by the fact that they now receive fully suited

furniture across all their doors and casement and tilt & turn windows in a wide choice of perfectly matching finishes. VBH managing director Peter Rowlands said: “We’re delighted that a well-respected company such as Everglade has joined the ever-growing ranks of fabricators, both large and small, to have made the switch to greenteQ. They do it for the right

reasons; those of improved product quality and features.” Everglade managing director, Vinod Gopal, commented: “Having dealt with VBH for a number of years we were confident of the reliability of their supply and we also really rate the service we get from sales co-ordinator Karen Campbell and the VBH Technical Department.

DUFFELLS UPVC Repair OPEN DAY On November 10th 2012 Duffells held their UPVC Repair Open Day at their premises in Croydon. The event was extremely popular and featured a wide range of new and innovative products specifically aimed at the UPVC repair market. Demonstrations and informative literature were given out by the exhibitors on the day equipping industry professionals with the tools and information they need to prepare for the future in UPVC. At the Locksmith Magazine we asked a few questions‌ 1. How successful would you rate your recent Open Day? It was a very successful day, even more so than our previous one held earlier this year in February. We were able to meet customers we speak to on a daily basis and strengthen our relationships. Visitors had an insight into how Duffells operates as a company and can meet the needs for those who currently work in the UPVC repair market, or those who are looking to learn more about it. This was the sequel to the event earlier this year but this time we specified on a single segment of the industry. Many said it was even better than the previous one and they were astounded at the range of UPVC repair products we can supply to our customers.

28

THE NOV/DEC 2012 ISSUE SPONSORED BY UNION

2. Were you happy with the response and attendance? The feedback we have had from exhibitors and visitors was fantastically positive and exceeded all of our expectations. Drawing over 400 people from all over the country to come and see us was really remarkable. The atmosphere was jubilant and there was a fantastic spirit among all who attended. This was a vast improvement on the last show and the next one will be even better still.

3. What prompted you to organise this event? We felt so many positive developments have occurred at Duffells over the past few years that we wanted to show some of our most valued customers what Duffells could do for them and to share our plans for the future. We feel that UPVC repair is an ever growing important part of the security industry. We also wanted to organise an event that showed new and innovative product: a look into the future of the industry and to teach the visitor about the developments to their trade. It was an exercise to promote awareness to our most valued customers.

4. What do you consider were the biggest attractions? It was a combination of different aspects of the day that drew in the large number of visitors. Some came to learn about UPVC repair for the first time, whilst others were already established and wanted to further their knowledge and expertise. Everyone got an opportunity to meet exhibitors including ERA, Yale, Fuhr, Hoppe, CES Locks, GU, Mila, Winkhaus, Sashmate (to name a few) and gain expert knowledge and see demonstrations. Some came to meet their dedicated account manager. Some came to pick up our much anticipated brand new Multipoint Locking and Double Glazing Repair catalogue and a handful probably came to get some of the free hog roast and refreshments! 5. Can we expect to see more open days from Duffells in the near future? Given the success of our first two open days we will certainly be hosting further events. As developments in the trade progress at such a rate we understand that, as a locksmith working most hours of the week, it can be difficult to keep up to date with new products and initiatives. We are considering further open days focusing on other sectors of the industry in an attempt to expose our customers to exciting new areas of the trade and to showcase our huge range of products; including items that some may be unaware that we supply.

6. Your new catalogue dedicated to upvc repair has recently been launched. What is different from this and its previous edition? ‘Multipoint Locking and Double Glazing Repair – Volume 1.1’ was launched at the open day and received fantastic reviews by our visitors. It is now available to all of our customers who can call us on 0208 662 4010 to receive their free copy. We felt the UPVC repair market changes so quickly that it was essential that Duffells stay up to date with product developments, product replacements, new products in the market and new product lines we did not previously stock. The catalogue contains greater attention to detail and accurate easy to read measurements and diagrams to help our customers identify the parts they need with ease. It really is a ‘must have’ item that every locksmith who deals with UPVC repair should have. Inside the catalogue there are… • over 600 multipoint locks and gearboxes • over 250 multipoint lock handles • over 200 patio door locks and accessories • over 1000 window locks and hardware • over 200 window handles and accessories It demonstrates that Duffells is the no.1 supplier of UPVC repair product to the trade.

7. What’s next for Duffells and the UPVC repair market? We have extensive plans to showcase our capabilities as the best supplier of UPVC repair products to the trade, including appearing at the FIT Show 2013 in Telford. For any readers attending the event, please feel free to see us on stand 2-408. If trade professionals do not currently use Duffells for their UPVC repair product supplies, I would highly recommend giving us a call on 0208 662 4010 to discuss the benefits of using Duffells. You will discover that all account managers at Duffells are highly trained so that you really are talking to an expert.

Hotel fire doors – safety is still in jeopardy, says FDIS On the day that BBC One’S ‘ Inside Out’ programme broadcasted a shocking new exposé into the state of hotel fire doors and its impact on fire safety in the South West, the Fire Door Inspection Scheme (FDIS) published the results of its own national survey into the five most common defects in hotel fire doors. The Inside Out programme broadcast on 22nd October was a follow up to its report on the fatal fire at the Penhallow Hotel in Newquay in 2007 and undercover filming in 14 hotels in the region. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7001313.stm) Five years since its initial investigations, serious fire safety issues are still being seen in hotels. The new programme featured an interview with one of the guests trapped in a Bideford hotel fire last year as well as some interesting developments at the Grosvenor Hotel in Torquay, star of Channel 4’s ‘The Hotel’. According to the latest fire statistics from DCLG, there were 595 fires in hotels in Great Britain in 2010/11. While the number of fires in hotels, guest houses and hostels has decreased since the introduction and increasing enforcement of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order, known as the RRO, awareness of these regulations is still very patchy. Neil Ashdown, general manager of the Fire Door Inspection Scheme, said: “It is deeply shocking that lessons are still not being learned in the hotel industry about the critical importance of fire doors in providing protection to life and property.

“When we stay in hotels we are in unfamiliar surroundings, much more easily disorientated and less aware of escape routes than in many other buildings that we typically occupy such as a home or office. In this environment people and escape routes require greater protection, not less, and effective fire doors are probably the single most important element in giving people enough time to safely evacuate a hotel. “I did my own survey of about 20 local hotels earlier this year and saw for myself how low awareness was of the importance of fire door maintenance. Many hotel owners are frightened by how expensive they think maintenance will be. In reality, the moderate cost of a professional fire door inspection and maintenance regime is far outweighed by the benefits of ensuring safe premises. It also makes financial sense, particularly in a recession, to ensure business continuity. If a bedroom, full corridor of rooms or a function room is out of action, then there is a cost implication to the hotel.” Neil Ashdown also points to the worrying results of the national survey by FDIS looking at fire doors in hotels used during last year’s Conservative, Liberal Democrat, Labour and Green party conferences. The premises included big national chains as well as smaller hotels. Experienced fire door professionals and safety experts secretly checked a group of 17 hotels in Liverpool, Sheffield, Birmingham and Manchester. The FDIS researchers found problems in almost every one. The five most common problems spotted in these hotels were: • Ill-fitting doors in frames - 59% (10 hotels) • Damaged fire doors - 47% (8 hotels) • Fire doors propped open - 47% (8 hotels) • Incorrectly fitted fire and/or smoke seals- 35% (6 hotels) • Poor condition of fire and/or smoke seals - 35% (6 hotels) This research supported the decision by the BWF-CERTIFIRE Scheme and the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers to launch the Fire Door Inspection Scheme earlier this year and to create the Diploma in Fire Doors, the first such qualification for hotel, office and other facilities managers, building maintenance and safety professionals. What the industry stresses is that an effective fire door consists of much more than the door itself. A fire door is an engineered safety device that requires all of its components to fulfil their roles for the door to achieve its function. This includes the door frame, door closers, hinges and other ironmongery, glazed vision panels, signage and fire and smoke seals.

Picking up on this last point, John Fletcher, manager of the BWF-CERTIFIRE Scheme, says: “The point about fire and smoke seals is incredibly important and very topical at the moment. We are hearing of a lot of misinformation currently circulating among hotel owners that a recent Government determination on this issue lets them off the hook when it comes to replacing defective fire doors. This is very worrying. Such seals play a vital role in ensuring the integrity of a fire door set and creating effective compartmentation in a building so people have more time to escape in the event of a fire.

‘Such seals play a vital role in ensuring the integrity of a fire door set and creating effective compartmentation in a building so people have more time to escape in the event of a fire’ “The BWF view and advice remains unchanged. We believe that it is always advisable to fit fire and smoke seals to fire doors, based not only on the position set out in Approved Document B of the Building Regulations but also on the evidence of 15 years of regular testing of our members’ fire doors within the BWF CERTIFIRE Fire Door Scheme.” While similar schemes are well established in the USA, the UK’s Fire Door Inspection Scheme is the first in Europe and is designed to transform people’s knowledge and understanding about the critical purpose and function of fire doors. It aims to help improve fire safety management, protect property and ultimately save lives through creating a new pool of expertise and competence to help those with legal responsibilities under the RRO and equivalent legislation. FDIS provides a vital new resource to help the ‘Responsible Person’ complete fire risk assessments for the premises they manage. It also raises awareness of defective fire doors and the potentially tragic consequences of leaving these unchecked.

Promoting the initiative at a special event for the Police, CASAC has taken the lead with an innovative anti-burglary solution for the region following Police reports that villains are still attempting to snap Euro cylinder locks. Brett Evans of grouphomesafe, said: “We’re pleased that CASAC chose to feature our Vectis Plus family of products as part of their

GRIMSBY LOCKSMITH’S GENEROUS GESTURE A Grimsby charity shop which had more than £800 stolen by heartless thieves is now feeling more secure, thanks to the generosity of a local locksmith and safe business. “We saw that the charity shop had been broken into when we read about it in the Grimsby Telegraph,” he said. “I was appalled by how such a worthy cause was targeted in this way. “We knew we could help by donating and installing a replacement unit that is an insurance-approved safe for them. Because this charity is run by local people for our community we were very happy to help.” The charity group is currently raising money for life-saving equipment for a new cardiology unit at Grimsby’s Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital.

Shop manager Vonnie Henderson said: “Richard’s donation has made us realise that that there are still good people left in the area. The work we do as a charity is for the community and we want people to realise that all the money we raise stays in North East Lincolnshire.” The healthcare charity is behind the Big Red Heart Appeal, to provide specialist equipment in the new cardiology special procedures unit at the hospital.

OVERSEAS NEWS - AUSTRIA Police in Vienna, Austria have been criticised in a row over locksmiths who overcharge for their services - after it was revealed that officers had been recommending companies suspected of ripping off clients. The allegations scandal came to light when one caller, who had been recommended by police, to call one locksmith company, made a formal letter of complaint. He complained after being charged 500€ for a new lock – which soared to 1,700€ once fitting and labour were added to the bill. The man blamed the police for

providing him with the contact details. Other similar incidents have since come to light.

‘officers had been recommending companies suspected of ripping off clients’ Following incidents such as break-ins, police officers carry business cards for locksmiths which they then distribute to those affected. But police rejected

suggestions that they recommend anyone. Police spokeswoman Adina Mircioane said that the police are not permitted to recommend locksmiths - and that if evidence to the contrary were to be discovered, disciplinary action would be taken. Police are appealing for more information on allegations of overcharging, which will then be investigated. The locksmith guild wants to see reputable locksmith companies recognised with a seal of approval to help prevent these problems happening in the future.

A WELL-TIMED ‘MIRACLE’ FROM LOCKDECODERS With perfect timing – just ahead of the Auto Locksmiths Expo (ALEX) in late October, Lockdecoders, a world player in innovative auto locksmithing equipment, has produced another winner.

The Miracle A9 is claimed to be more capable and more versatile than any other automatic key cutting machine. Powerful and fast with 24V DC motor, it not only cuts edge-cut and laser track car keys, but also dimple keys and domestic cylinder keys.

‘powerful and fast with 24V DC motor’ A significant design feature of the A9 is that the decoder and cutter are both mounted in the turret, so there is no need for tool change. There is also a drop-in clamp exchange, and touchscreen operation with dynamic selection. The A9 costs just £4730 plus VAT. If you missed it at ALEX, contact Lockdecoders for more details. TRIBUTES PAID TO PIONEERING DEBORAH A pioneering businesswoman who was a leading light in the marketing of the first life-saving window lock of its kind in the UK has died. Deborah Jenning was a Director of Jackloc, the award-winning Leicestershire firm which distributes its own unique cable window restrictors – originally designed by her father, Derek Horne 10 years ago. Deborah, together with her sisters Emma Wells and Judith Burrows, established a thriving market for the product, building up Jackloc to become a leader in its field and a highly successful international business, with orders from as far afield as Russia, Mexico, Arabia, Malaysia and Australia. Deborah, who lived in Telford in Shropshire died aged just 44 from breast cancer. She leaves her husband Paul, 11-year-old daughter Madeline and 13-year-old-son Jack, who was the inspiration behind the Jackloc name. Her sister Emma, Director of Jackloc,

said: “Deborah was a driving force in the business and an inspiration to all around her, both personally and professionally. “She was an amazing person and businesswoman. Deborah had a huge heart and would be the life and soul of the party, but she didn’t suffer fools gladly and could be really tough. “Deborah and I worked hard to create and build a growing market for the Jackloc, which was the first metal cable window restrictor of its kind, and the company has gone from strength to strength. We are totally committed to the business and passionate in spreading the word about safety. Although we will all miss Deborah enormously, she has left a lasting legacy and, in tribute to her, we will now throw our emotional energies into driving the business forward.” Deborah was keenly public-spirited and community-minded, previously having a career with the police in the National Crime Squad, volunteering her time as a magistrate in more recent years and also

spearheading charity fundraising events. Her niece, Kelly Burrows – daughter of Deborah’s sister Judith, who is Senior Sales Executive at Jackloc – now plans to raise funds in Deborah’s memory for the charity Breakthrough Breast Cancer by taking part in the London Marathon next April. BSIA HITS BACK AGAINST CLAIMS OF ‘BIG BROTHER’ SOCIETY Alex Carmichael, Technical Director of the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) has hit back at claims that the UK is a ‘big brother’ society, and that public surveillance using CCTV systems is out of control. The UK’s newly-appointed surveillance commissioner, Andrew Rennison, had painted a rather bleak picture of the role of CCTV in crime detection and prevention. Responding in a letter to The Independent’s editor, Alex Carmichael wrote: “CCTV is vital to the protection of our society, and the security industry in the UK is dedicated to ensuring it is used responsibly. It is, in fact, possible to safeguard civil liberties whilst making effective use of CCTV systems, as the two things are not mutually exclusive. “Research commissioned by a member of the BSIA CCTV section following the 2011 riots revealed that 76 per cent of

‘it is how you use it that counts’ individuals surveyed feel safer knowing that CCTV is in operation in public areas, with 62 per cent saying they would like to see more CCTV in their local area. “On the issue of HD cameras and algorithms being able to spot individual events or individual people from great distances, it should come as no surprise to any person in the UK that camera technology worldwide is continually evolving. “Mr Rennison does have a difficult task ahead of him ensuring the balance between personal privacy and public safety with respect to CCTV. I am sure he will get a lot of support from all stakeholders, but statements such as “technology has overtaken our ability to regulate” is unhelpful, as technology is just

a tool – it’s how you use it that counts, and in the case of CCTV, it’s about ensuring that public CCTV meets a defined need within defined legal parameters. Nobody, especially any governmental body, can halt the advance of technology. “The Association and its members have welcomed the Protection of Freedoms Act and the introduction of carefully thoughtout regulation, provided adequate consultation takes place.” www.bsia.co.uk

CUTTING EDGE CAMERAS ON SHOW AT ASIS INTERNATIONAL AMG-Panogenics, the British manufacturer of sophisticated 5 Megapixel cameras, and i3, Canadian based leader in digital video technology held live demonstrations of their cutting edge technology at the i3 stand at ASIS International which took place in Philadelphia USA recently. The camera allows for up to 14 live panoramic and ePTZ streams whilst simultaneously allowing it to record the full scene. This is very important in terms of the subsequent efficiency studies conducted in terms of how people are moving and how their movements are tracked with video analytics. For applications in schools, for example, where a single camera mounted in a hallway junction can cover the hallways leading off in other directions. There are several applications in other government facilities in the pipeline. The company has been

showcasing the camera integrated with its Video management System in Mexico and other Latin American markets, and is confident of a strong demand for the products globally. David Myers, CTO of AMG-Panogenics, comments, “PanoCam360 streams 12.5 frames per second and the on-board de-warping reduces the processing requirement back in the control room. Offering up to 14 de-warped video streams/independent camera views simultaneously alongside the full-resolution fish-eye view makes PanoCam360 the most powerful and versatile 360 degree camera range available. “The camera is completely developed and manufactured in the UK and works on an open software platform, which makes it very easy to integrate, and the SDK we provide facilitates de-warping and enables electronic-PTZ playback.

i3 has a fantastic platform for bringing the PanoCam360 to market. They are a world-renowned organisation with a vast global network of partners, integrators and dealers. The company is dedicated to supplying technologically advanced security solutions and its focus on quality and customer service matches the ethos AMG-Panogenics works with. PanoCam360 is shortlisted for the Security Excellence Awards 2012 in the ‘Innovation of the Year’ category. Why IP? IP security systems are becoming increasingly popular, but what are they and how can they benefit your customers? Put simply, an IP camera is a networked digital video camera that transmits data over an ethernet link. This means IP CCTV Installations have three main advantages over traditional CCTV Recording Systems: • If the premises requiring a system are large, the immense saving of cable costs will make the installation more affordable. • Your CCTV application needs to be of a very High Specification. IP Mega Pixel Cameras can be utilized and provide up to 4x higher picture definition/ resolution than conventional Cameras. • Intelligent Analytics allows users to gain valuable information from their pictures, other than just images. For example, search for an object, count people entering a building, track a moving target.

UK’S BIGGEST LOCKSMITHING EXHIBITION RETURNS FOR 2013 Industry leaders invited to exhibit at MLA Expo. The UK’s leading locksmith exhibition, the MLA Expo, will be returning in force on 13-15 September 2013 at the International Centre in Telford. The biennial event is organised by the leading trade association for the locksmithing profession, The Master Locksmiths Association (MLA), and sees locksmiths and suppliers from across the globe meet to exhibit products and services, discuss industry trends and take part in training courses. With almost 20 per cent of the exhibition space already sold out within just 24 hours of the launch, the MLA Expo is already shaping up to be the locksmithing event of next year. Global businesses Abloy, Mul-T-Lock and Yale, together with ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions have been announced as official sponsors of the event, and have already booked significant floor space to showcase their very latest security products. Commenting on the launch of the exhibition, Dr Steffan George, development director for the MLA, said: “This is the 17th time that the MLA has hosted the Expo, and each time we see it grow, with more locksmiths and associated companies from around the world attending. This year we have evening events planned, giving industry leaders the opportunity to network, share knowledge and make new contacts. There will also be a significant amount of training – technical, business and legal related. “Securing four such leading partners as Abloy, Mul-T-Lock, Yale and ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions as sponsors for the event is fantastic, and we look forward to finalising and announcing further exhibitors in the coming months.”

The MLA Expo is regarded as the principal industry event, with exhibitors and visitors typically ranging from tool suppliers to practicing locksmiths, specialists such as heritage and auto locksmiths, manufacturers, and associated companies. Over 1500 people from all over the globe are expected to attend the three day event – previous exhibitions have seen visitors come from as far afield as Australia, continental Europe and the USA. Steffan said: “We know locksmiths appreciate the opportunity to test tools and techniques and meet manufacturers and fellow locksmiths face-to-face which is why the MLA Expo is continuously growing and regarded so highly amongst the locksmithing profession.” MLA Expo ‘13 will also see a prize draw for visitors, with planned prizes ranging from a Key Machine to a holiday in Las Vegas. New standard for ATM safes with gas protection According to statistics compiled by the German Federal Criminal Police Office more than 100 ATMs were blown up in Germany over the last five years. Other countries have also been hit. The criminals not only destroy the ATM safe itself; they also put nearby people, property and objects at risk. Now the European Standard EN 1143-1 includes the additional “GAS” designation: European Certification Body (ECB) uses it as a basis for the ECB•S certificate for ATM safes with additional gas protection.

From this year, the European Standard EN 1143-1 for the first time also includes ATM safes with gas protection from resistance grade II on. Manufacturers seeking ECB•S certification with the additional “GAS” designation according to this standard must furnish proof that their product fulfils the requirements specified therein. During tests carried out on safes by independent testing laboratories, specialists feed a highly effective gas mixture into the safe and detonate it.

‘100 ATMs were blown up’ Then they carry out an attack test with precisely defined tools in order to determine the remaining resistance value. The test conditions are authentic and simulate a highly critical situation. The ECB•S certification mark is only awarded to safes which come out of the test still closed. With these products, the users can be sure that the criminals will not get hold of the money even if they carry out a gas attack.

EVEN MORE POPULAR TROJAN’S MEGA EGRESS HINGE Trojan’s Mega Egress hinge is set to become even more popular: it’s now available in a reduced stack height option of 13.5mm. This replaces the 14.5mm height and will be available alongside the existing 16.5mm height. This addition means the Mega Egress can now achieve stated U values on a larger number of profile systems. The 330mm Mega Egress hinge has been a popular product in the Trojan portfolio ever since it was first launched thanks to the classic Trojan combination of value

and innovation. Its unique constraint closing feature means it achieves high security and excellent compression without the need for additional hinge protection. It can be used on all side hung applications up to a maximum sash width of 900mm. It can carry up to 40kg, making it ideal for all heavy duty applications, including triple glazed windows. It has been UKAS laboratory tested to BS EN 1670 and exceeds grade 5 classification for ultimate corrosion resistance.

SQUIRE’S GENERATION COMBINATION PADLOCK Premium lock manufacturer Henry Squire & Sons Ltd has unveiled its new Stronghold® SS50 Combi, purpose-designed for convenience and extreme resistance against the threat of a sustained attack. These heavy duty combination padlocks are constructed of a solid hardened steel lock body and hardened boron steel shackle – with a protective lock body cover for extra high security. With an electrophoretic finish for excellent corrosion resistance the range can withstand an impressive 200 hours exposure to salt spray, to function in the harshest environments. The padlocks operate using a fully recodable five-wheel dial with 10 digits – from zero to nine – offering over 100,000 combinations. The digit wheels are spaced apart making it easier for those who find smaller dials more difficult to operate. Recoding is straightforward - they can be coded ‘alike’ so one sequence opens

several locks – ideal for multi-users operating in high security or commercial environments. Two variations of this smart padlock are available including open (SS50 Combi) and closed shackle (SS50C Combi) options making it ideal for a host of uses. It carries the Squire 10-year guarantee. VBH Adds Yale Keyless Digital Lock VBH has added the Yale Keyless Digital Lock to its range to sit beside the successful Yale Keyfree as the company’s main electronic door access solutions. Keyless allows home-owners to access their flush timber or composite door without a key in much the same way that Keyfree does on PVCu and rebated timber doors. Access is gained by entering a 4-12 digit Family PIN code into the weather resistant touch-screen key pad. As well as the Family PIN, it is possible to set temporary Visitor PINs, making Keyless ideal for those relying on home

visits, such as the old or infirm. Keyless is completely standalone, with no wiring, and is powered by 4 standard AA batteries that will operate for approximately 10000 functions before signalling that replacements are due. Each set is supplied in retail packaging and includes polished chrome 60mm Yale Nightlatch and a silver internal electropad, along with a polished chrome external Keyless unit.

Yale Keyless and Keyfree are both available from stock at VBH. www.vbhgb.com or call 01634 263300.

NEW DOORSETS GUIDE FROM DHF A new, comprehensive guide designed to help building professionals correctly specify CE marked doorsets has been published by the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF).

Specifiers, architects, contractors, clients and other professionals can download the guide, Specifying CE marked doorsets, from the DHF website: www.dhfonline. org.uk The DHF produced the guide to make building professionals aware of the benefits of specifying CE marked doorsets rather than traditional multisupplier sourced door assemblies. In particular, a doorset comes complete with comprehensive documentation to enable the specifier to determine the performance requirements for an intended application. This ensures the

doorset will be fit for purpose. The new publication will help all those in the construction sector to prepare for new CE mark legislation coming into effect in July 2013. Under the new Construction Product Regulation, from that date it will be illegal to supply doorsets covered by a harmonised European standard without a CE mark. Initially this will affect external doorsets. Where the harmonised standard has not yet been published, for example fire resisting doorsets, CE marking will become compulsory at a later date, possibly a year or more after 2013.

grouphomesafe’s VECTIS PLUS TAKES CENTRE STAGE AT CASAC grouphomesafe, the UK’s leading supplier of door and window components, has been participating in an initiative organised by CASAC (Community Action and Support Against Crime), the West Yorkshire not for profit crime reduction organisation, by showcasing its Vectis Plus cylinder free door system. Promoting the initiative at a special event for the Police, CASAC has taken the lead with an innovative anti-burglary solution for the region following Police reports that villains are still attempting to snap Euro cylinder locks. Brett Evans of grouphomesafe, said: “We’re pleased that CASAC chose to feature our Vectis Plus family of products as part of their initiative and to promote the benefits of installing multi-point locking systems to homeowners. Because Vectis has no cylinder,

there’s no problem with cylinder snapping or bumping and with so much press and media coverage this year on the topic of cylinder attack, customers can be reassured that the system meets all the latest security requirements and will give them the peace of mind they seek.” Neil Goldup, chief executive officer at CASAC said: “The new Vectis Plus lock is an excellent product to discourage lock snapping attempts and also exceeds SBD certification.” www.casac.org.uk • www.grouphomesafe.com

AUTOLOCKSMITHING SPONSORED BY ADVANCED KEYS

ALEX 2012 – A WINNING FORMULA The Auto Locksmiths Expo (ALEX) held last month at the East Midlands Conference Centre in Nottingham, reached new heights as far as UK exhibitions to the locksmithing industry is concerned, pulling in visitors not just from across the UK, but also from Belgium, Italy, Germany, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Poland, Holland and even South Africa. The product demonstrations featuring live camera action with large screen displays so that everyone was able follow the process proved to be a great success. This is the first time that this has been done in the UK for this market and the organisers say it is an idea that they will most definitely be repeating at future events.

To provide an even broader global edge, UAP Tradelocks brought over the renowned Jim Hetchler from Texas, USA, so even the Americas were represented! According to the organisers, one exhibitor (Lockdecoders) even said that the show was “Like 3,000 visitors had come through the doors, it was that successful for us.” TO BE ANNUAL EVENT The organisers reported: “Although visitor numbers didn’t actually reach that level (just as well!), the quality was extremely high, as was expected at this elite level of the locksmithing industry. “Most visitors not only stayed for much of the day, visiting each stand in turn, but they came back the next day as well. Many did their buying there and then, thanks to

52

the show offers that were available. “The consensus of opinion seems to be ‘more of the same please’ and so ALEX is to feature as an annual event in the locksmithing calendar. Positive comments from exhibitors were very encouraging: Kim Stanier, Advanced Keys said: “The show has given us the opportunity to put faces to names.” Robin Huish of Hickleys was delighted with the event: “We were very pleased to be one of the sponsors of ALEX. The oncept of mixed stands and technical demonstrations gave a fresh and modern feel to a trade day. It was great to meet new and existing customers and from our customer feedback, the show was a roaring success. Roll on ALEX 2013. The show was wonderful!” “The show has been very good to us,” added Dean Sanderson of 3D.

CUSTOMERS WANT AUTO SMART KEYS – BUT STILL HAVE SECURITY CONCERNS Customers want the convenience of smart key now, but are too concerned with security and reliability to accept a smartphone key system just yet, according to SBD’s latest customer survey. ‘Cautious to Converted: A Survey Of Existing And Potential Smart Key Customers In EU.’ The smartphone revolution of the past five years has been unprecedented, with the mobile phone playing an ever-increasing role in the daily lives of consumers. No wonder then that the automotive industry, which is already busy deploying telematics services and apps for the car, is now considering a future where the smartphone can also replace the key fob. But until now there has been no public research into customer’s readiness for these kind of features. From SBD’s new survey, it seems that the answer is they’re not ready just yet - not until OEMs and

54

THE NOV/DEC 2012 ISSUE SPONSORED BY UNION

‘smart key fitment is due to continue rising’ their suppliers can offer assurances over reliability and security concerns. Interestingly, it’s the same concerns that smart key systems have faced for the past decade since their introduction in 1999. Customers have always been nervous to accept new technology that affects the security of their vehicle, with common concerns such as “but how do I know the car is locked?” or “will I be locked out if my battery goes flat?” Smart key technologies have taken a long time to overcome those barriers, but with general customer awareness growing and availability rapidly increasing since 2009, it looks like smart key systems have finally broken through to appeal to the mass market. Customers are beginning to trust

in the technology and the convenience appeal is high - with fitment rates starting to rise. Some 75% of existing smart key owners now want to specify a system on their next new vehicle. Interest in higher convenience features such as walk away locking or Virtual Pedal is high too. The evidence suggests that smart key fitment is due to continue rising at a faster rate now that customers are ready to accept this technology. Looking to the long term future, the development of smartphone based access control faces those same early apprehensions over security and reliability - but if OEMs and Suppliers can overcome these initial barriers, then the signs are good that demand and fitment will rise, just as the development of smart key systems has proven. HONDA CASE’S

Some of you may have noticed we are starting to have more of our own brand keys/remotes in stock. A lot of time and investment is going into these products to benefit our customers.

Most people are aware that the Honda cases occasionally come with hard blades (including genuine cases). Well we have finally been able to invest in making our own and ALL of our Honda cases have been changed to nickel silver blades drastically reducing the chances of damaging a cutter during the key cutting process.

Our keys and blades are produced with quality in mind, our aim is to match that of Silca products. Our motive with all our own brand products is to maintain a high level of quality whilst reducing the overall cost to our customers.. We appreciate feedback on all of our products and services, whether it be our remote cases, keys, blades or remotes. We have good communication with all our manufacturers to adapt our products where we and our customers feel its needed.

NSN14 direct decode using instacode to progress final two cuts Start by fully inserting the NSN14 direct decoder into the lock, then check for the 1st wafer position felt, it will be in position 3 or position 4. If the 1st wafer position is found in position 3, then we will begin by reading positions 3, 5, 7 and 9. If the 1st wafer position is found in position 4, then we will begin by reading positions 4 , 6 , 8 and 10. This confirms that the lock follows a wafer construction of 1 up and 1 down. The reading process is as with other decoders: simply position the tool on the numbered space line, and pull the lifter gently along the numbered line to read the correct key cut. Having read the 1st side, we remove the tool, turn it 180 degrees and then read the opposite side of the lock.

‘simply position the tool on the numbered space line, pull the lifter gently along the numbered line to read the correct key cut’ Begin by inserting the tool fully into the lock and position the lifters indicator on the numbered line the wafer is 1st felt in - in this case it’s the No 3 position, so we begin by reading positions 3, 5, 7 and 9 by gently pulling the reader’s arm gently along the line till it stops and jot down our key reading, as follows:

Position 5 reads as a No 2 key cut

Position No 6 reads as a No 1 key cut

Position 7 reads as a No 3 key cut

Position 8 reads as a No 1 key cut

Position 9 reads as a No 1 key cut

Position 10 reads as a No 2 key cut

So we now know that positions 3, 5,7 and 9 read as key cuts 3, 2, 3 and 1 . We now remove the reader tool from the lock, turn it 180 degrees, then fully re-insert it in the lock and read positions 4, 6, 8 and 10.

So positions 4, 6, 8 and 10 read as key cuts 4,1,1 and 2 We then add this to our other readings and we have a key that reads from position 3 to position 10 at the tip as : 3, 4, 2, 1, 3, 1, 1 and 2 .

‘we now remove the reader tool from the lock turn in 180 degrees, then fully re-insert it in the lock’’

Position 3 reads as a No 3 key cut

58

THE NOV/DEC 2012 ISSUE SPONSORED BY UNION

Position 4 reads as a No 4 key cut

So we have the key positions 3 to 10 as 34213112 and all we now need is the missing cuts in positions 1 and 2 that we will use Instacode to find.

‘click on the biting tab, find the biting screen appears and we went the info we know from our decode’ We open Instacode and select the car make and model and year, then click on find the biting tab, the find-biting screen appears and we enter the info we know from our decode in boxes 3 to 10 , as per diagram below:

Then click next and Instacode will tell you the full key or the full key possibilities that exist, as diagram below:

You can see from this screenshot that we have four possibilities of key. Now we locksmiths do not like wasting keys so the last thing we want to do is cut four key blades. So to avoid wasting keys, we click the show-cutting key tab, and Instacode will save wastage and tell us potentially worst scenario how many key blades we need, as per screenshot shown here:

Hints & Tips provided by Martin Pink, Rapid Locksmiths

You will see that we need a maximum of two keys to be sure to get the correct key. We start cutting the highest possible key, then the lower cut key if incorrect, sometimes only one key will be needed as 1st or second code will be correct; the worst scenario is that two keys are needed. For interest the 2nd code was correct and operated the ignition where the missing positions 1 and 2 were a 2 and 3 cut, giving us a full key of 2334213112, manufacturers key code of 16624. You will often be given the correct code first time, but using code software such as Instacode - no matter what the scenario makes finding the correct key both simple and quick with no special skill required.

Standard key locks that only give a partial decode from the door lock so need to be progressed As lishi 2in1 are designed for use in door locks there exists a number of models of cars that do not house all of the wafer positions within the door lock , ie Nissan NSN14 locks: these will house eight wafers in the door lock but the full 10 wafers within the ignition. So once we have picked and decoded the door, it is necessary to progress the info we have in code software to find the two missing key cuts. In this part of the guide I attempt to show you how simple this procedure is. I use Instacode as my chosen code software. As this guide is more about the progression than it is about the picking, I have concentrated more on this. Picking and decoding the NSN14 lock using the lishi 2in1 single lifter - then progressing the final two cuts using Instacode. The Nissan NSN14 lock has: 10 wafer positions four key heights The door lock only houses eight of the 10 cuts, the door lock houses positions 3 through to 10 . Nissan models using the NSN14 keyway that have the powered eccentric ignition are slightly different; these have 11 wafers in the ignition with the first cut always being a No 3, this system has: 11 wafer positions four key heights The door lock houses eight wafer positions in positions 4 through 11 . During this guide we will pick open and then decode the Nissan NSN14 lock; this will give us eight of the 10 cuts required, and we will then progress this info using

Instacode to find the missing two cuts and give us the correct 10 cut key. The lock does not always respond to sequence-picking , but in tests it does favour picking positions 3, 5, 7 and 9 first then, once set, pick positions 4,6,8 and 10. Picking and decoding the Nissan NSN14 door lock using 2in1 tool Centre the lifting arm so it does not snag and fully insert the tool into the door lock. Once inserted we pick positions 3, 5, 7 and 9 until fully set by tickling each position to find the binding wafer; once we find a bouncing wafer we pick it until set,; once positions 3579 are fully set we then pick positions 4,6,8 and 10 until the lock opens. So we start with positions 3, 5, 7 and 9 in their binding order:

‘the lock does not always respond to sequence-picking, but in tests it does favour picking positions 3, 5, 7 and 9 first then, once set, pick positions 4,6,8 and 10’

Position 7 is next to bind and pick

Position 3 is first to bind and pick

Position 9 is next to bind and pick

Position 5 is next to bind and pick

Once position 9 picks the plug is felt rotating a fraction which confirms positions 3, 5, 7 and 9 are fully set. I confirm this by checking each of these positions to ensure all are slapping tightly. We now concentrate on positions 4, 6, 8 and 10 until the lock opens. Article continues on next page >>

Position 6 is the next to bind and pick

Position 3 is a No 3 cut

Position 7 is a No 3 cut

Position 8 is next to bind and pick

Position 4 is a No 4 cut

Position 8 is a No 1 cut

Position 10 is next to bind and pick

Position 5 is a No 2 cut

Position 9 is a No 2 cut

Position 6 is a No 1 cut

Position 10 is a No 3 cut

As position 10 picks the lock opens, as we did not need to pick position 4 we know instantly that this is a No 4 cut. We now hold the lock in the open position via the tension arm, and we then run the decode in the same direction as we picked, by moving the indicator arm along the vertical numbered position line until the indicator stops. It will stop on one of the numbered horizontal key cut lines, and this will be your key cut.

So we have cuts 3 to 10 from bow to tip of 34213123, and we now need to find the missing cuts for position 1 and 2. We do this by using code software such as Instacode First we go to Instacode then select either the car make and model and year or we choose Silca nsn14. We then select find bitting and enter the cuts we know in positions 3 to 10 which is 34213123 as in the following diagram.

We then click next and get the next screen:

As you can see this gives us four possible keys. We all know that key blanks are to expensive to waste, so Instacode helps avoid this. We click the show cutting tree tab, which shows us the worst scenario how many key blanks we need to get the correct key and which order to cut these in, as below:

You will see that we need a maximum of two blades as worst case scenario.

There are other ways to progress these without using two blades via impressioning. There are two ways of doing this: we will start with the scenario we have - Instacode and have the possible codes as above. Code 15125, 2334213123 Code 17456, 3234213123 Code 18171, 2134213123 Code 18469, 1234213123 So if impressioning, we cut the key on our cut to code machine as 1134213123. Insert this key into the ignition and turn right and jiggle up and down a few times. Remove the key and inspect positions 1 & 2. We are looking for marks. If one position has marked, then this position needs cutting to next depth. If both positions have marked then both positions need cutting down.

‘as we did not need to pick position 4 we know instantly that this is a No 4 cut’ If using the info above, if just the first position marked, then this confirms the second position is a No 1 cut so looking at what we have above, if position 2 is a 1 cut then it can only be code 18171 so we need to cut position 1 down to a 2. If not having Instacode, we cut each position that marks down 1 cut, we then clean with wet ‘n dry , and reinsert into ignition, turn and jiggle again before we inspect positions 1 & 2 again - any position that marks needs cutting down 1 cut again. Repeat this process and you will reach the correct key. Whether progressing via Instacode or impressioning the last cuts it is a quick simple process to complete. Once done we have the correct key for the lock. Procedure if fitted with the 11 cut powered eccentric ignition There will be no difference with regard to the picking and decoding process of the door lock at all, other than remembering the positions marked on the tool will be incorrect. The tool will suggest that you

‘no difference with regard to the picking and decoding process of the door lock at all’

are picking and decoding positions 3 to 10 when in fact you will be picking and decoding positions 4 through 11 instead; this will not affect the picking process but will become important when progressing via Instacode to find the missing cuts. With our decoded cuts in the above guide of 34213123, we would select the 11 cut NSN14 version on Instacode, then select new biting. Then we would then insert the known cuts into positions 4 to 11 instead of 3 to 10 as before, as in the diagram that follows:

Then click next to see the below screen.

As you can see the codes are identical to the above progression on the 10 cut key. The only difference being that each one has a No 3 cut preceding it. This is because in the 11 cut lock, the 1st cut is a generic No 3 cut, this will be the same on every key for the current series. You will not always know if the car you are working on has the 11 cut powered eccentric ignition on it or not: this will only become obvious after you have cut the key, which will work fine in the door lock, but will fail in the ignition lock. This is not a problem: all we then need do is cut the 11th cut a No 3 cut at the bow end and the ignition will then operate.
