18 Full support package for 26 Working together Rehau TOTAL70 launch achieves results Rehau is underlining the importance of providing strong sales and marketing support to fabricators and installers as part of the launch of its new REHAU TOTAL70, featured in this issue. Fabricators and installers can choose from a full support package designed to allow them to maximise impact for their own businesses.

18 Secondary Glazing Success for Roseview Secondary glazing is proving a lucrative alternative revenue stream for leading sash window fabricator Roseview Windows. Roseview offers secondary glazing for any window type and to cope with increasing demand for the product – especially in the extensive heritage and listed buildings sector a new department, run by Tracey Santoriello and Paul Bygrave, has been created.

A great example of how working together can achieve results comes from Universal Arches and Solidor, who have pooled their considerable knowledge and expertise to launch the industry’s first fully-welded, high quality, arched head composite door – another winner for these industry leaders who take no prisoners in responding swiftly and decisively to market needs.

55 The Countdown Has Begun! The days are ticking away to what we already know will be the biggest thing to happen in the glass and glazing industry during 2013: The FIT Show!

Just about everyone agrees that 2012 was certainly an eventful 12 months on all fronts and 2013 is likely to follow a similar pattern. In last month’s Autumn Statement the Chancellor announced several initiatives which he claims will boost the construction sector including an additional £5 billion over three years for capital investment. But as some industry leaders have pointed out, there is little evidence this will have much impact. John White, Chief Executive of the Timber Trades Federation (TTF) said: “While we applaud the Chancellor for recognising that the construction industry is key to economic recovery, this announcement of £5 billion is a small drop in the ocean and is unlikely to stimulate the recovery or the sector or the economy.” Diana Montgomery, CPA Chief Executive said: “Throughout this year construction has been contracting by £1 billion each month, so the announcement that there will be an additional £5 billion added to the capital budget over three years will do very little to offset the losses we are already experiencing, especially as that £5 billion is not just for construction but also for IT, exports and skills.” The Palmer report on conservatories reveals interesting trends: that while the overall number of installations fell, the actual installed value increased by 12 percent, indicating that better off consumers are investing in bigger, high-end products. Aluminium continues its impressive, upward trend. There is more controversy about the Green Deal, with reportedly poor take-up by the public and installers – and criticism about revelations that the “independent” regulator of the scheme is owned and controlled by the “big six”. An Emplas poll finds that many installers have doubts about whether the Green Deal will deliver – but shows there is more confidence in both composites and colours, tipped to be the biggest stories for growth in 2013. The New Year starts with more changes at the helm, including the appointments of Julian Slade as Ultraframe MD and Kaz Spiewakowski as new MD at GEZE UK. Doubtless there will be more changes and challenges to come in 2013. Finally, the Clearview team would like to wish everyone a happy, healthy and (hopefully) prosperous New Year. Onwards and upwards! Pat, Editor

Celebrating 25 Years Together One of Scotland’s leading manufacturers of quality windows, doors and conservatories and Network VEKA member, Norscot Joinery Ltd celebrates 25 years of trading with VEKA plc this year. Norscot has been trading with the internationally-renowned VEKA since 1988, and the landmark Anniversary comes not long after VEKA itself marked 25 years of manufacturing in the UK. The family-owned company, which was established in 1984, has continued to go from strength to strength, as has its relationship with VEKA, as Commercial Director Callum Grant says: “Just as VEKA has evolved over the years, Norscot has done the same. Together with VEKA, we have embraced new technologies as the manufacture of PVC-U windows and doors has become more advanced and sophisticated, and we are really happy to have retained such a long-standing relationship with the VEKA team. “VEKA remains our chosen supplier,

not only because we have always received consistency from them in both quality and support, but also because our customers can take confidence in the fact that any future requirements for additional products or replacement parts, to suit their initial purchase, will always be readily available, something that is very important to us. VEKA’s Sales and Marketing Director Colin Torley, who was initially instrumental in gaining Norscot’s business adds: “Norscot has been one of VEKA’s largest customers north of the border for 25 years, and we have a great respect for them, and have taken on board suggestions that they have made to allow them to meet the needs of their wide customer base.” Callum Grant concludes: “We have, of course, looked at using other suppliers over the years, however none can match up to the exacting standards of VEKA. As market leaders in our field, we identified a gap in the Scottish market for both reversible and vertical

sliding window options; both of which VEKA has since developed. Add to that, the Matrix profile from VEKA has been established and recognised as the original and iconic profile in the glazing industry. “With a quarter of a century of mutually beneficial trading behind us, we are excited about working with VEKA for many more years to come.”

SOLIDOR’S WINKHAUS DEBUT Solidor have pulled off yet another industry first for the composite door sector with the introduction of the Winkhaus AV2 Heritage Door Lock. This new lock satisfies the need for traditional looking rim latches on composite doors, yet with the benefit of high security, multipoint locking. The composite door market is full of designs attempting to replicate traditional timber doors in terms of designs and colours, with Solidor’s own product widely regarded as the best in terms of finish and performance, thanks to a range of 15 foiled finishes inside and out. Now the industry pioneer has introduced the Winkhaus AV2 Heritage Door Lock to help make their products replicate timber doors, but with added security. The AV2 is seen as an upgrade from the old key

6

wind up and traditional rim lock previously used at Solidor. Up until now, modern multipoint locking systems haven’t lent themselves to doors that feature pull door furniture, particularly Georgian and Edwardian period doors and it has been a topic of discussion for the composite door sector. The AV2 Heritage Locking System has the euro profile locking cylinder at a similar height to a traditional round cylinder and the lock is operated automatically as soon as the door is closed. This key feature means that an external lever handle is not required to operate the locking points and the lock can be deadlocked or opened externally by turning the key a quarter of a turn. From the inside the door can be opened by an internal thumb turn, again with a quarter

turn. The door is automatically locked when closed from the inside and the key is then required to gain entry from the outside. The AV2 has been engineered and manufactured in Germany as a quality product and is Police Secured by Design, PAS23/24 and VdS accredited. Gareth Mobley, managing director of Solidor Group comments: “Yet again we’ve launched another industry first and the AV2 Heritage Lock will sit alongside our exclusive Avantis lock and other security solutions. We believe that we are the envy of our competitors given our USP’s, largest product range and we’re keen to add to the list further!” For further information or a free copy of their latest brochure call 01782 847300, e-mail enquiries@solidor.co.uk or download it from www.solidor.co.uk. MWG & SYNSEAL MEET SPECIAL DEMANDS Coventry-based Synseal fabricator, MWG, recently manufactured and installed more than 30 windows on the Masjid-e-Zeenatul-Islam mosque in Coventry following a substantial extension to the site. The frames were fabricated using foiled Legend 70 PVC-U profiles, and were designed to blend in with the architect’s vision for the extended mosque, including the colour and texture of the brickwork. “Legend 70, foiled to match the windows’ surroundings, fitted in perfectly with the architect’s design, and helps the mosque to stand proud in its community,” explained MWG’s owner, Manj Sanghera.

“While modern mosques don’t look out of place in a typical British urban environment. The architect still wanted some traditional features on the extension to the building, including the Masjid-e-Zeenat-ul-Islam in Coventry. These included the pointed arched window frame design that gives mosque windows their traditional shape. Projects like this prove the widespread demand for specially-designed multilight windows in shapes other than square casements, and it underpins Synseal’s investment in the K2 site at Blackburn where it has recently installed state-of-the-art bending equipment.

“Windows come in all shapes, sizes and colours,” explained Brian Walker, Synseal’s fabricator development manager. “First, we want our fabricator customers to deliver on projects where the client demands something other thant a square window, and secondly, we want our customers to get everything they need from one PVC-U supplier – us!”

Crystal guarantees installers best products, best pricing In a tough market, installers need the best choice of products and a clear pricing structure to do well. If fabricators suddenly stop making certain products or raise prices without warning, it can damage their customers’ business. Crystal Direct now offers customers a supplier agreement to guarantee the best product range, service and pricing structure. Installers who enter into an

exclusive partnership with Crystal have access to Crystal’s extensive product range and a competitive pricing structure. Crystal is a national one-stop-shop for the widest range of windows, doors and complete conservatories. Stone Home Improvements, a Norfolk-based installer, recently signed a supplier agreement with Crystal. Owner Barry Stone says: “It makes sense for us to have a supply agreement with Crystal.

We get everything we need from Crystal and I’ve always been very impressed with the product quality and service. If there’s ever a problem, you know Crystal will put it right.” Crystal’s Sales Director Matthew Burt adds: “We hope this partnership will give our customers peace of mind. We’d welcome any interested installers contacting us on 01462 489 900 for further information.”

GGF Launch New Programme for younger companies The Glass and Glazing Federation has launched the Promotion Programme specifically for new and young companies which have been established for less than three years. The Promotion Programme willallow companies to connect with the GGF and take advantage of the Federation’s knowledge base, health and safety and technical support services as well as many other benefits. Nigel Rees, GGF Group Chief Executive commented, “Every year we receive literally dozens of enquiries from young companies which are established less than three years and, therefore, can’t meet the criteria to join the GGF. The Promotion Programme overcomes that barrier and means

that young companies can now connect with the GGF, access our information and receive other benefits as they start on their journey to GGF Membership.” Companies joining the Promotion Programme will have a dedicated GGF staff liaison officer to assist them in a smooth promotion to full GGF membership once their organisation becomes established for three years and they meet the joining criteria for GGF Membership. Companies joining the Promotion Programme must; • be trading (or about to trade) in a glass-related field • have (or about to have) suitable business premises, • have adequate personnel to run the business

• comply with the GGF Code of Good Practice for companies in the Promotion Programme • supply the GGF with a set of management accounts each year Nigel Rees added, “The Promotion Programme provides all the support and advice a new company needs on the road to GGF Membership. In addition to accessing GGF information, participants in this new scheme can also attend national and regional GGF meetings and events, where they can network with other company leaders and share knowledge and good practice. We’ve put together a strong programme and we look forward to helping many young companies benefit from connecting with the GGF.” The cost of joining the Promotion

Programme is a £500 flat-rate annual subscription payable in one amount or by direct debit over 12 months. Once a participating company has been established three years and approved for GGF Membership, the new Member joining fee will be waived. Visit: www.ggf.org.uk/ promotion-programme

BUSINESS MICROS LAUNCHES NEW ONLINE ORDERING SOLUTION Business Micros has relaunched its online ordering software in response to the upsurge in interest from trade fabricators for a userfriendly system which they can offer to their installers. The EvoWEB online pricing tool has been transformed into a complete online ordering system which can deliver costing, quoting,

ordering and even invoicing direct from any PC or tablet. It offers simple clear menu choices which guide installers step by step, and minimises the amount of information installers need to enter into the system for themselves. The new EvoWEB is designed for fabricators to add to their own websites with

a personalised user interface. It means their trade installers can log in at any convenient time and use the system with just a short introduction and no need for any experience in order processing. There are three buttons on the menu screen - New Enquiry, Customer Settings and Search. If installers choose New Enquiry to place an order or produce a quote, they are presented with a choice of window designs and once they click on their chosen one they are prompted to complete key details such as size, colour, cill, handle type and glass. They then simply add any preferred options and click to calculate the price. They can then view or print either a costing or quotation for a customer and can place an order or even print an invoice. A demonstration version is available now on the Business Micros website at www. businessmicros.co.uk and live online demonstrations are available on request.

‘We want to thank all our customers for their continuing support.’

Sliders UK celebrates 10 years with new product launches 2013 looks set to be another exciting year for specialist product fabricator, Sliders UK. The company recently celebrated its 10th anniversary and marked the occasion in style - launching its new Veka In-Line Patio Door and composite door with a Veka outerframe into the market. Commenting on the anniversary and the new product launch, Ian Longbottom, managing director said: “Trading successfully for 10 years is an achievement for any company and I am very proud that we have reached this milestone. “Sliders UK has grown impressively over the last decade and I would like to thank our customers for their

‘We wanted to do something special to mark this anniversary and launching these new products seemed the perfect solution.’

continued support – after all without them we would not be where we are today. We wanted to do something special in this celebratory year and launching the new Veka patio and composite door seemed like the perfect solution. Both products are manufactured to Sliders UK’s exacting standards and we anticipate they will open up new and profitable sales opportunities for our customers.” Sliders UK was formed in November 2002 by Ian Longbottom and Mike Spain. They started with eight employees and specialised purely in the fabrication of Duraflex patio doors, selling them to installers, builders and fabricators who preferred to concentrate on the manufacture of their core volume products. The company built a loyal customer base and in 2006 had grown to 38 staff and was producing an impressive 280 patio door units per week. 2008

was a particularly big year for Sliders UK. The company moved into its current location, a 40,000 square foot factory in Preston, and achieved Secured By Design accreditation on their Duraflex In-Line Patio Door (which is branded the ‘Ultimate Patio Door’) – making it the first patio door on the market to hold this status. It also added the Veka vertical sliding sash window to the portfolio, giving trade customers a stepping stone into the lucrative heritage and conservation sector, and introduced the Duraflex bi-folding door, achieving SBD accreditation on the product in 2010. Late in 2011, Sliders UK invested more than £250,000 in new machinery and launched its composite range of high specification edge banded doors, stable doors, French doors and FD30 fire doors into the market. 2012 was another remarkable year, with SBD accreditation being achieved on both its

vertical sliding windows and composite doors, enabling the company to supply high security products across its entire range of specialist products. Today, Sliders UK employ 57 people and manufacture 400 patio doors, 150 composite doors, 20 bi-folding doors and 100 VS windows every week, making it one of the UK’s biggest specialist fabricators. 2013 looks set to continue in a similar vein as the company plans to introduce yet more products to its already impressive armoury. “Sliders UK have experienced significant growth over the last decade and it’s been a pleasure to work alongside such a dedicated and hardworking team during that time,” Mike comments. “Everyone at the company is delighted to be celebrating such a big milestone and we look forward to enjoying another successful 10 years.” Tel: 01772 698222 or visit www.sliders-uk.com

Composite Doors Yorkshire Goes National Huddersfield-based Composite Doors Yorkshire is receiving orders from across the UK following its success in West Yorkshire. MD Richard Pogson said: “The company has just supplied some Milano composite doors from its Italia collection, complete with an integrated side panel, to a customer in Glasgow, and supplied and installed two doors in Newcastle. Requests for doors have come from Wales, and a set of double French doors was also purchased from Lancashire. This widespread interest is down to the individuality and high

class finish that we provide”. Richard added: “We take security very seriously so, as well as our doors having a 48mm thick solid timber core, we also add an Astral S locking system which is drill, pick and tamper resistant. The doors also boast reinforced door frames which give you the strongest and most secure option available in a residential door.” Customers can choose from an unrivalled range of energy-efficient composite doors with sustainable credentials and extensive colour and glass options. Doors can be customised including integrated side panels and top

lights. All doors have lead free skins and edgebanding. www.compositedoorsyorkshire.co.uk or call 01484 544571.

A BITE OF THE GREEN APPLE Synseal Extrusions recently won a bronze award for Environmental Best Practice at the Green Apple Awards presented at the House of Commons. Synseal was recognised for successfully achieving its objective of reducing its landfill waste to zero. “This was an ambitious environmental objective for a high volume PVC-U extrusion company, due to the very nature of wastes that are produced on site,” the Company said in its submission statement. “In achieving the Zero Waste to Landfill objective, Synseal Extrusions would ensure that all operational and canteen wastes produced on site are sent for recycling where

recycling routes exist. Non recyclable wastes would then be disposed of through Energy from Waste recovery (incineration) therefore eliminating the need for landfill.” The Green Apple Awards are presented annually in recognition of companies, councils and communities carrying out projects that enhance the environment. This year there were more than 500 nominations. Synseal impressed the judges by recycling 284 tonnes of plastic, wood, cardboard, aluminium, mixed recyclables (drinks cans, plastic bottles etc), polypropylene and mixed metal in the last 6 months.

A HEALTHY BONUS FOR MERSEYSIDE HOMEOWNER For one Merseyside homeowner it’s been a mixed year but one that she can now look back on a little more fondly. After being diagnosed with a serious illness, Mrs Gordon is now on the mend with her recovery encouraged by a nice warm home and an unexpected cheque thanks to Planitherm, returning the cost of her recently installed windows. Mrs Gordon had her new windows installed by Wallasey-based Hardmans Double Glazing Company, who encouraged her to fill in the entry form for the quarterly Planitherm

Cash Back Promotion. A delighted Mrs Gordon received the cheque in a presentation attended by frame manufacturer Peter Smith of Glazerite, Gary and Mark Hardman, John Rigby of Saint-Gobain Glass which manufactures Planitherm energy efficient glass; and Wes Clarkson of Padiham, which supplies the insulated glass units to Hardmans. “We wanted to give Mrs Gordon an occasion to remember,” said Gary Hardman, “so everyone involved in making Mrs Gordon’s windows got together to present the cheque.” Mrs Gordon is the sixth customer over

the past two years to receive the cash back presentation made to a homeowner that had specified Planitherm energy saving glass in their windows. For more information on Saint-Gobain visit www.saint-gobain.co.uk.

Latest MCi report: 2008-2012 A recent study of the UK residential windows and doors sector, published by Market & Customer Insight (MCi), has valued the market at approximately £3.2 billion in 2012. Reviewing the last four years, it will come as no surprise to learn that the UK Residential Windows & Doors Market Development Report found recovery in the sector continued to be weak in 2011. The level of growth fell from 6% to 1% as housebuilding activity remained muted and consumer spending was adversely affected by economic uncertainties and difficulties in gaining credit. The situation remained one of ‘conflicting trends’; reduced house moving activity encouraged investment in existing properties, but reduced credit availability, uncertainty over long term employment and pressure on consumer spending power from wage freezes and increased fuel costs all combined to counter the potential growth. The double dip recession in 2012, and continued difficulties for individuals in gaining finance as a consequence of the banking crisis, combined to reduce sales again in 2012, albeit at a more modest level than in the previous recession. The UK market for doors, door frames, windows, window frames and conservatories is expected to increase to 3.5 billion by 2017 throughout the forecast period 2013-2017, but at ‘moderate levels’ of annual growth. That growth is expected to accelerate as the period progresses and the UK economy improves. The windows and window frames sector is anticipated to continue to form the largest element of the UK market, up to 2017. Again, 2013 is expected to be a difficult year for the sector, with ‘sluggish’ growth forecast for 2014. The value of the direct sell replacement windows and window frames market is projected to very moderately continue to decline in 2013 as the conditions in the UK economy take time to ease and borrowing remains difficult. But financial availability and house price inflation will improve conditions in the longer term and growth can be expected to return to the market at modest levels initially. The doors and door frames sector is forecast to increase throughout the review period, and by a slightly stronger level than that for windows, yet growth prospects remain modest. Sales in the conservatories sector are expected to grow throughout the period under review, and its growth will lead the total market. The market for direct-sell conservatories is improving and will grow more strongly as the period progresses and financial restrictions are lifted, house price inflation increases and people look to invest in their existing property with a changed attitude towards house moving following the past few years.

THE BEST JUST GOT BETTER REHAU has rebranded all its 70mm systems under the new REHAU TOTAL70 umbrella but has also launched a number of new multi-chamber 70mm profiles which offer new opportunities for its customers. The new five and six chamber profiles offer up to 16% better thermal efficiency than can be achieved with REHAU’s existing three chamber profiles, and crucially also give fabricators the option of using a wide range of glass and spacer bar options to reduce the cost of their finished windows and doors. All of the profiles in the REHAU TOTAL70C chamfered, REHAU TOTAL70S sculptured and REHAU TOTAL70R

reversible ranges are now capable of achieving WER A ratings with standard double glazed sealed units; but if fabricators use the new five and six chamber profiles, they can achieve

even more impressive results in terms of the overall U-Value. For fabricators, the enhanced thermal performance of the new five and six chamber profiles means that they can be used to produce WER A, B or C rated windows using lower cost glass and spacer bar options than the existing three chamber alternative resulting in a higher performing but lower cost finished product. A new tool within www.rehauanswers. com thermal calculator website enables customers to work out the best combinations to reduce their costs using REHAU TOTAL70.

A GEORGIAN ADDITION Kömmerling have just introduced a new snap-on Georgian Bar system to their C70 and O70 Gold window systems, that’s both easy to fabricate and gives a more authentic look than bars within a sealed unit.

The new Georgian Bar system was previewed at Fensterbau 2012.

The chamfered and featured Georgian Bar systems comprise of edge clips, centre clips and bars for ease of manufacturing. Each bar is 25mm wide and 16mm deep to give a true authentic finish and is available in white, golden oak, Irish Oak, rosewood, grey, black, cream and Chartwell Green. The system has numerous benefits over other alternative Georgian Bar designs as it can be toe and heeled during installation and there’s no worry of the failure of the stick on bar alternatives that are integrated into the sealed unit. There’s also a single page A4 technical sheet available to promote the product. Kevin Warner of Kömmerling and KBE comments: “This is a worthy addition to our window systems that not only look good and are easy to fabricate, but they are also some of the most energy efficient on the market.”

For a free copy of the Georgian Bar technical sheet, contact the Kömmerling sales office on 01543 444900 or e-mail enquiries@ profine-group.com.

SYNSEAL SUPPORTS CUSTOMER’S COMMERCIAL AMBITIONS Coventry-based Synseal fabricator, MWG, recently replaced 55 large multi-light windows on offices sited above retail units in Coventry. The majority of the windows were on the first and second floors above the popular Opus Supermarket that sits on a prominent junction, with more to the rear of the distinctive 1930’s Art Deco style building. The White finish combination windows, featuring fixed lights fitted above and below

opening casements, were made using Synseal’s Legend 70 PVC-U profiles, and have now brought the first and second floors up to the same high standard as the rest of the building. “We pride ourselves on being able to complete a wide range of work for different types of customers, be they homeowners, commercial, or public sector,” explained Manj Sanghera, the owner of MWG. “The ability to chase different kinds of work – and all kinds of customers – is a vital skill to have in this

economic climate where companies shouldn’t be one-trick ponies. They should have the resources available to go for every opportunity. “Of course, having the right supplier helps, and Synseal in particular gives us the support we need to be leaders in our field.”

Secondary Glazing Success for Roseview Windows The manufacture of secondary glazing is proving a lucrative alternative revenue stream for leading sash window fabricator Roseview Windows. Roseview offers secondary glazing for any window type and to cope with increase in demand for the product a new department, run by Tracey Santoriello and Paul Bygrave, has been created. Tracey comments: “We’ve never really promoted

our secondary glazing service but enquiries continue to flood in, proving there’s clearly very strong demand for this product. Many of our customers operate in the heritage sector and offer secondary glazing in instances where the original windows must be kept intact, such as on listed buildings. ” Paul adds: “We use a very versatile aluminium system which includes horizontal sliders, vertical

sliders – balanced and unbalanced and with a modern tilt-in facility - hinged windows, lift-outs, fly screens and static panels. All are available in a wide range of finishes and fixing options.” Secondary glazing complements Roseview’s core product range, which includes the Heritage Rose and Charisma Rose, two of the leading uPVC vertical sliding sash windows on the market.

Arnold Weinstock, past Chairman of GEC once said that ‘business is a game played by professionals at which only the best are likely to win’. If he was perusing the fenestration sector today he might have reflected that ‘only the best are likely to survive’. While not exactly a cheery note to start 2013, I think it highlights that companies are facing a reality check and that more than ever, whatever area of the supply chain they operate in, they must strive to be the best they possibly can and gain competitive advantage wherever possible. One highly cost effective advantage is the technical and marketing support of a trade association such as CAB. The latest 2012 Q3 output stats do not make good reading, ONS figures show that new work output fell 2.4% compared with 2012 Q2 and 14.8% lower than in 2011 Q3. There were, however, a number of positive statements in the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement. The new PFI replacement, called PF2, will be vital in plugging the 20% fall in public sector investment in construction that the industry is currently enduring but the £2.4 billion Priority Schools Building Programme that was launched in a blaze of glory has already been cut back by £250m in December 2012. So how do companies gain that advantage in tough times. In my view, one way is to take a different perspective in looking at the opportunities that exist. At a recent CAB Regional Members event Maber Associates, a top 100 practice, highlighted some exciting developments and designs in pods for classrooms. Earlier in the year Simon Lerwill, Davis Langdon highlighted his role as a Specification writer and the opportunities companies have to provide information on their product or service. A focus on social media at a CAB Specification event in February 2012 demonstrated the opportunities of using a hashtag for industry events. In just one evening the tweets sent reached over 34,000 accounts. But where do clients, specifiers or architects search for information on suppliers? CAB has ensured that its members can be easily accessed and searched on its new website launched in Autumn 2012. In fact many of our members find that their company details can be found more quickly on our site than their own, especially in terms of google rankings. It is perhaps no surprise that 2012 saw the greatest ever increase in the use of the CAB logo amongst members ranging from stationery and websites to vehicle livery. Companies want to announce to the world that they are both well informed technically by supporting a major Association and that they are investing in the sector’s promotion. Perhaps we could revise the great GEC Chair’s words to reflect that while the ‘only the best are likely to win – being part of a trade association is a big step in this process’. For more details how to gain competitive advantage by being part of CAB, contact me on 01453 828851 or email justin. ratcliffe@c-a-b.org.uk .

Hurst Plastics reliance with leading spacer bar supplier, improves customer offering Composite and PVC-u panel door manufacturer, Hurst Plastics has announced the appointment of new supplier, Edgetech UK. Hurst Plastics approached Edgetech UK, manufacturer of the foam-based spacer bar Super SpacerTM, to work together with their operations team, following an increase in demand for variations in their composite door glass designs; they wanted to offer their customers the choice and not compromise the overall performance of the doorsets. Darren Glew, Director of Operations for Hurst Plastics explained: “With the introduction of the BRFC’s ‘Door Energy Rating Scheme’,

the focus has been on increasing the performance of all our manufactured door styles and designs to enable our customers to met the DER scheme requirements, whilst still offer their customers a choice. “Hurst Plastics has seen a healthy growth in sales over this period, contributed mainly to the increase in demand for composite doors. To help support the increased demand, we knew there was a need to improve productivity in areas of our glass unit manufacturing. “We selected Edgetech UK, after recognising they not only produce one of the leading, flexible spacer bar products on the market, but their vast knowledge on the

subject of manufacturing sealed glass units, would help us achieve the performance and efficiency results we need”, Darren said. Together, the two companies worked on several projects to improve the productivity for Hurst Plastics glass sealed units, including the implementation of new machinery to apply ‘Super SpacerTm’ and producing a manufacturing solution to enable Hurst to include their Georgian bar style glass units into the glass design options, which they were previously unable to offer. “Input from our suppliers is invaluable to the success of our products. Edgetech UK has a similar likeminded attitude to us; continuously looking at methods,

solutions and components which help produce products our customers will be satisfied with”, he added. Edgetech UK MD Andy Jones commented, “It is clear working with the Hurst Plastics team; that they too, regard the continuous development of their core products to be a good investment in benefiting their customers. LUXURY MOCHA BOOSTS SOLIDOR RANGE Hot on the heels of the successful launch of Duck Egg blue, innovative composite door manufacturer, Solidor, has introduced its 15th finish, the luxurious Mocha woodgrain. This beautiful new woodgrain finish has already been installed on an impressive property in rural Yorkshire and was based on the Windsor design from the traditional Collection. The door also featured a handmade ring door knocker, handle and letterplate from Solidor’s traditional ironmongery range. The homeowner was thrilled with the result, a composite door that oozes quality and panache. With the introduction of Mocha, Solidor can now boast a colour and woodgrain range that extends to 16, around twice that of its nearest competitor, amounting to 256 possible colour options. It is the stunning finishes in Chartwell Green, Irish Oak, Chartwell Green and now Mocha that are really helping their customers to set themselves apart from the standard GRP offerings in the composite door marketplace. All the finishes from Solidor are an exterior grade laminate/foil, the same long lasting ones that are used by the PVCu window and door systems companies, or completely through colour and are proven to be a better finish than a stained or gel coated finish. Solidor can also boast 2 outer frames, each in 9 different colours inside and out, so there’s always a door frame that’s finished in the same material. With 18 frame colour combinations and 256 door colour options, that’s an incredible 4,600 possible permutations! Gareth Mobley, Solidor Group MD comments: ‘We’ve been first to market with a number of colours and Mocha is another example of our pioneering approach to the market. There are now some stunning foils available on the market and we’ve got another new one ready for the FIT Show, but at the moment it’s a closely guarded secret!’ For further information or a free copy of their latest brochure call 01782 847300, e-mail enquiries@solidor.co.uk or download it from www.solidor.co.uk. CUSTOMERS BACK BIG LAUNCH Iceni Windows, the Essex based trade fabricator, was one of the first companies to recognise the opportunity presented by the launch of the REHAU TOTAL70 system and even invited some of its key trade customers to attend one of the BIG reveal events in Reading. Eight customers were treated to front row seats at the high profile launch and were given the opportunity to see the new multi-chamber

profiles for themselves and hear direct from REHAU about the new branding and all the potential benefits. Tina Beal, a Director at Iceni, says the feedback from the installers both during and after the launch was hugely positive. She said: “There was a real buzz around the event beforehand and I think it lived up to our expectations. All of our customers had a great day and were impressed both with the new REHAU TOTAL70 branding and the new profiles. “The installers were particularly enthusiastic about the new REHAU thermal calculator at www.rehauanswers.com which they all agreed was a fantastic tool and simplified the whole process of choosing and supplying WER or U-Value rated windows.” Call: Tina Beal, Sales Director at Iceni Windows on: 01386 519279 or email: tinab@iceniwindows.co.uk

New Manager Seals G12 Award Win The commercial side of Network VEKA’s Trent Valley Window and Door Company Ltd, Trent Valley Architectural Glazing, won the ‘Health & Safety Initiative Award’ at the esteemed G12 Awards last year. It was a first-time entry into the G12 Awards for the Nottinghamshire company, and as Gary McCartan Group Managing Director says, the win closely follows the appointment of its new Health & Safety Manager: “Vincent Doyle only joined us in January of this year. He’s taken big strides to improve the health and safety of the overall company, working closely with suppliers and fitters. This is underpinned by training, re-writing

procedures and ensuring that every member of staff across the company buys into health and safety. Not only is the company now more safe and better aware, but we have also become a lot more efficient. “We faced some stiff competition and were up against two national companies, whilst we focus on the East Midlands, so it was an unexpected but fantastic win.” As part of Trent Valley Window and Door Company Ltd, which focusses on the domestic sector, Trent Valley Architectural Glazing specialises in aluminium and commercial customers.

Autumn Statement 2012: Construction at heart of growth Chancellor George Osborne put construction at the heart of the economic recovery as he unveiled poor growth figures in the Autumn Statement. Downgraded figures from the Office for Budget Responsibility confirmed the economy will contract by 0.1% this year before growing by 1.2% in 2013, 2% in 2014 and 2.3% in 2015. He described the statement as “fiscally neutral” with money shifted from current to capital spending. Mr Osborne confirmed an extra £5bn for capital investment funded

24

JAN 2013

by efficiency savings across Whitehall departments as annual infrastructure investment was increased to £33bn. The Government also pledged to “assist” construction of 120,000 new homes and improve flood defences under already announced spending handouts. The Chancellor confirmed reforms of the PFI system and said that £10bn of schemes had qualified so far under its UK Guarantees

‘British economy is healing’

initiative. A further £1bn will be spent on expanding good schools and building 100 free schools and academies in this parliament. Another £270m will be released to improve further education colleges in England. He also increased tenfold to £250,000 the tax relief on investment in plant and machinery and pledged to cut the main rate of corporation tax to 21% by 2014. “The British economy is healing. There are no quick fixes but we are making progress and Britain is on the right track. Turning back now would be a disaster,” the Chancellor said.

WORKING TOGETHER TO CREATE COMPOSITE CURVES Universal Arches has worked closely with composite door pioneer, Solidor, in the development of the industry’s first arched head composite door. While a few examples have been tested during 2012, it is only now that the product has been officially unveiled. The leading PVCu building materials bending specialist has built an impressive reputation in the industry, helping raise product quality and introducing new production and delivery processes. Solidor has taken a similar innovative approach with regard to product and service and is now acknowledged as the fastest growing company in its sector. The product development process was relatively quick, thanks to a ‘hands on’ approach by Universal’s MD, Leon Day and Solidor’s MD, Gareth Mobley. Speed to market and the ability to respond to the needs of the marketplace are two key ingredients for successful companies like these, as this joint project has clearly shown. Gareth comments: “We believe there is no such thing as a standard door. For us working with Universal was an easy and obvious decision to make and we’re already up to 10-15 arched doors per week.” Leon, added: “We are thrilled with the end result – a fully welded, high quality arched composite door frame. I have to say it’s been a great project to work on with Gareth and his team and it’s yet another successful joint project, in addition to those with Rehau and Residence 9.”

Distinctly Different Doors Distinction’s ‘15 Shades of Grey’, the paint finish that adds to the Nan Ya GRP composite doors’ standard colours and woodstains, went on sale from 3rd December last year. It’s something different from the norm and Distinction is keen to widen the appeal of the composite door. Although enjoying record sales in the region of 6,500 door blanks every week and a turnover nudging the £30 million turnover barrier, owner Drew Wright, credited with being the one to bring the GRP composite door to the UK, is not content to sit on his laurels. “We’ve moved a long way from the early start in local authority contracts and the composite door is now a mainstay of the home improvement market. The wide range of door styles, glazing cassettes and colours has always meant that the Nan Ya brand has been in the forefront of this market but it’s important that we continue to innovate,” said Drew. And it’s clear that innovate is the watchword because ‘15 Shades’ is only the start. “We have long believed that additional colours, and the ability to specify the colour of a door, would be the way homeowners would want to go as the market matures. Much like buying a car, they want to have the colour of their choice and are prepared to wait to get what they want. It may be an extended lead-time but that time is insignificant if you end up with something different and, more importantly, exactly what you want, ” he continued. So lots of different colour for composite is the way it’s going? “Not just door colour but an expansion on our decorative glass offering too, with 12 ranges that include colour, available by the time of the FIT Show”

commented Drew, “add to that a number of new door styles and the expansion to Distinction’s product range is very significant – and all to be showcased at FIT.” I don’t know about you but we can’t wait! The War Against Crime Recent Mintel* research into UK home security found one home in every 100 falls victim to burglary in a typical year. Clearly, the uPVC industry has a duty of care to offer homeowners appropriate protection. But what does that really mean? Masco’s Ray McGrady takes a closer look at the state of window and door security across the UK in the war against crime, highlighting the importance of arming installers with robust, secure products and equipping customers with the information needed to make more informed buying decisions. Lackluster security: What’s the real cost?

With January now upon us it’s the time of year when we lock our doors, pull the curtains and sit back in the belief ‘an Englishmen’s home is his castle’. But are uPVC window, door and conservatory consumers really safe and secure behind their castle walls? Burglaries and theft insurance claims are rising - by £415 million last year alone. We need only glance at our local weekly papers to see the distress and trauma that unsuspecting burglary victims regularly endure. Yet with the right advice and appropriate products, security can be improved at almost any household entry point. Are we, as an industry, really doing enough? Masco, for example, indeed places security as a priority. It’s one of the company’s three business pillars. Through the very latest technology and state-of-the-art door and window locking systems we offer that extra peace-of-mind. But improved product security measures are only successful if consumers fully understand the choices available to them. I believe there is still much work to be done across the industry to support installers in the delivery of information and their sales processes surrounding security.

30

JAN 2013

The buying cycle: – who’s responsible for customer security?

Manufacturers. A commitment to research, innovation, constant product development and testing helps ensure products perform to the highest security standards. Working alongside the Police, Masco is part of the Secured by Design scheme; a programme, which has taken accreditations one step further giving the industry an opportunity to develop their products in order to stay a step ahead of those who may want compromise them. Specific standards, for example, now surround thief resistant locks and the burglary resistance of building components. Doors account for over 60% of the point of entry in burglaries. And would-be villains don’t have to look far to find out ‘how to break into a uPVC door’. A quick search online suggests: force the locks, unscrew the hinges, and break the glass. As an industry we need to make sure that consumers know that there are steps in place to eliminate all of these vulnerabilities. Despite many companies now selling multipoint locking as a high security feature, there are varying levels of quality and security. A five-5 point locking system, meeting kitemark standards, is the bare minimum for a ‘high security’ door. At Masco we use a combination of industryleading Yale 10- point door locks, with opposing hooks, dead locks and high security steel hinges. We know that our installers can leave a site knowing their customer’s premises are secure. It seems an experienced burglar can unhinge an insecure window sash in just 10 seconds. That’s why Masco uses SAC Security – a high performing multi-point shoot bolt system – coupled with toughened, high quality Pilkington glass. Rigorously tested to BS7950 and beyond to achieve secure by design status, it is seamlessly integrated into the Duraflex diamond suite range. Installers. However secure, tried and tested your products are, even with all the security accreditations, without correct installation these the measures are wasted. We believe it is vitally important that the whole of the Safechoice network, for instance, is aware of the correct way to install its products. Making customers aware of the security

choices available is an integral part of every sales process. Installers understand our security features so that they can sell them correctly. Training supported by clear, concise marketing literature is just the start. Installers can also call on Masco’s in-house surveyors and the technical assist team to ensure appropriate compliance with the latest regulations. Customers. For the average homeowner to choose a more costly product over a cheaper alternative, they need the confidence that the investment will keep them safe. They need to know they can trust their installer – and, moreover, understand precisely what they are buying. In the case of trust, websites now provide valuable ways for customers to validate and confirm the reputation of their suppliers. Sites provide a directory of trades and services that are vetted to the highest standards, for example, by verifying their insurance. Both Masco itself and many installers of our products are already valued members of such website communities. Explaining security clearly demands effective communication tools. In addition to clear literature and Point-of-Sale, more than 400 purpose-built SAC locking demonstrator units are in daily use across the Masco network. These hands-on boards allow installers to physically show and clearly explain the different mechanisms to every customer. What next? As homeowners continue to buy into higher value replacement uPVC windows, doors and conservatories, there is an increasing expectation that superior security should be embedded from the outset. Consumer focus on design has moved beyond mere visual aesthetics; now it’s about overall design performance, too. Rather than a matter of cost, security is, at last being seen as prudent investment by buyers. And if that perception prevents even one household burglary next year, then all our efforts have been worth it. *UK Home Security 2010 - Mintel

FACING FACTS AT G-12 AWARDS REHAU’s recent Faces behind the Facts marketing campaign was named Trade Promotional Campaign of the Year at the G-12 Awards. The fully integrated campaign was praised for communicating ‘a coherent and consistent message with a very well defined strategic purpose’.

Faces behind the Facts put REHAU’s team centre stage and focused on some of the individuals responsible for performance, quality, product development and energy efficiency within the company. It encompassed advertising, PR, online marketing and social media, and successfully engaged with customers via a dedicated trade website at www.rehaubynumbers.com Irene Smith, REHAU’s Marketing Communications Manager, said: “2012 was REHAU’s big anniversary year as we celebrated our 50th year in the UK and the 25th anniversary of our UK factory. The marketing campaign helped us to showcase some of the people behind our long-term success in a fresh and original way and crucially it also helped us to win and retain business. “Ours was a very competitive category so we were obviously thrilled to be announced as the winners. We are already proudly displaying our winner’s logo on our advertising.”

First Degree Systems is in the cloud Window Designer 7, the sophisticated software solution from First Degree Systems, is now available online ‘in the cloud’. This means, for a small monthly fee, fabricators can log-on and access any module from Window Designer 7 from any internet enabled computer anywhere at any-time – a concept known as ‘software as a service’. First Degree Systems’ Sales Director Alan Bark says that this development will make a huge difference to its customers: “With Internet speeds becoming faster and the online platform becoming ever-more reliable,

cloud computing and ‘software as a service’ is the future for the I.T industry. We have pre-empted this move to cloud computing and made all our software solutions available online, meaning fabricators no longer need Window Designer installed on their desktop to enjoy the benefits. Customers can switch

‘customers can switch modules on and off ’

modules on and off as required, giving them a flexible way to access the software the need to run their business. And because you are using a standardised platform such as the internet, you can expect to dramatically reduce IT support costs.” The monthly pricing module will also help fabricators better manage their cash-flow. Invest for success in 2013 Calvin Wilson, Managing Director at Metal Technology, says that the downturn is likely to bring further challenges in 2013 and businesses must invest and diversify to stay afloat. In addition, maintaining strong relationships down the supply chain will be key to success. 2012 saw mixed fortunes in trading and the end of the year saw additional challenges as some long-standing businesses were forced out of the market. We believe that 2013 could turn out to be the most challenging year yet for our industry, and as ever, costs are a major focus for all of us, demanding that we improve efficiencies wherever possible. At Metal Technology, investment across all areas of our operations has helped us to stay ahead through difficult times. Our good relationships with our major suppliers have enabled us to negotiate the strong supply chain deals that we need in order to offer flexibility in a cost- driven market. Our investment in relationship- building continues to bring rewards as we have added

more blue-chip construction companies to our existing supplychain partner roster. In 2013 we will focus on growing market share through the addition of new customers, expanding our product range to improve business levels with existing partners and enhancing specification values. Red tape good for business?

Industry often complains about more “red tape”, but sometimes new procedures do work for the greater good. Last year the UK government announced its intention to require collaborative, fully electronic Building Information Modelling (BIM) on its projects by 2016. If successfully implemented, BIM could help firms strip as much as 20-30% of waste from

our manufacturing processes by designing and building the asset virtually, as many times as needed, until it can be built flawlessly on site first time. At Metal Technology, we believe that this whole- sector approach to BIM will bring additional opportunities to exploit existing and new markets, and we have already commenced a programme of BIM development which will be launched in 2013 to assist architects and designers. The market is highly competitive and it is important that we remain ahead of the game in terms of new technology and the way we work. Or bad for business?

On the other hand, the recent announcement (October 2012) from the Department for Education that school design flexibility is to be limited in a bid to cut costs created a new ‘baseline template” that places restrictions on room sizes, storey heights and building shapes for 261 replacement school buildings planned across the country, The reports call for “simple, orthogonal forms ” with “no curves or ‘faceted’ curves”. They also state that buildings should have “no glazed curtain walling or ETFE roofs”. RIBA has issued a robust response, but manufacturers and fabricators in our sector can only be disappointed that the application of our sustainable products is to be restricted in this way. Public sector contracts are vital to our business and we believe that limiting our outlets is a concerning development.

New products, new regional focus

Over the course of 2012 we saw a good return on our research and development as our new products came to the market, helping to secure some large contracts as a result and with more to come in 2013. Our investment is not only in the technical side of our business. Geographically, we have restructured our on-the-ground sales operation, appointing an Architectural Advisor/ Business Development Manager to cover our recently created Midlands, South West England and South Wales region. This move complements our existing coverage of London and the South East, the North West, North East England, Scotland and Ireland. Scotland’s construction sector continues to deliver opportunities for us and in England, becoming a Supply Chain Partner in the Strategic Alliance for Value and Efficiency (SAVE) under the Improvement and Efficiency South-East (IESE) Construction and Asset Management Programme was an important achievement for us last year. With an uncertain 2013 in prospect, it is up to business leaders to sharpen the focus and remain competitive. In the aluminium sector, commodity prices will drive much of our decision-making, but as specifiers demand sustainability alongside aesthetics we believe we can deliver the products and service the market needs. www.metaltechnology.com

COLOURS & COMPOSITES ARE THE WAY AHEAD, SAYS EMPLAS POLL Colours – but not necessarily green - and composites are set to be the foundation of growth in 2013 according to a new poll by Emplas. The poll results suggest that while many installers remain unconvinced or unsure of just how much of a ‘benefit’ the Green Deal will deliver, there is a broader optimism that the industry will return to growth in 2013. The study, published in December, found that despite the continuing industry consolidation last year, installers remained upbeat, with 67 per cent of those surveyed predicting growth in 2013. But while respondents were broadly positive about their future prospects, they remained far more cautious as to their forecasts of how far they would benefit from the Green Deal. While homeowners will be able to sign-up to the Government’s flagship energy efficiency scheme from the end of this month, less than a third of installers polled said that they expected to see any business on the back of it. Instead the survey revealed respondents were pinning their predictions of growth on product innovation and core market development. Kevin Johnson, managing director, Emplas, said: “There are some positives here for all of us. Installers are the industry’s front-line. That they are still showing huge resilience after such an exceptionally challenging few years, to the point of forecasting a return to growth this

year, is encouraging in the extreme. “But it is also worthy of note that they are basing this forecast not on some sort of Green Deal ‘panacea’ but on growth in their core activity. This is positive from the perspective of demonstrating how product innovation and service development is sustaining retail business. “Conversely, it appears to confirm a failing by the Green Deal to communicate the opportunities of the scheme to the window

‘installers remained upbeat, with 67 percent of those surveyed predicting growth in 2013’

industry and many other sections of the home improvement sector.” This reliance on core markets and product development among installers was apparent in the findings of the study. Composite doors and colour products were tipped by 93 per cent and 73 per cent of respondents respectively, as a basis for growth in 2013. Respondents were far less optimistic, however, about prospects for PVC-U panel doors, tipped for growth by less than a fifth of respondents. Combining a tried and tested GRP leaf with a wide choice of glass and quality hardware, Emplas unveiled its new high specification composite door offer at the end of last year. Available in five solid and 21 glazed styles plus four stable door options, it features ‘cherrypicked’ hardware from Fab and Fix, Hoppe and Securistyle to create an affordable but high quality composite door range. Kevin Johnson added: “The survey reveals the incredible self-reliance that exists within our industry and in particular among its retail businesses. Equally, it demonstrates the critical importance of product development in supporting installers. As a fabricator we are working very hard to build on and enhance our product and support offer to give them tools, when they need them, to do the job.” www.emplas.co.uk

Kevin Harvey: the phone call that changed my life It’s not often a phone call changes your life, but when Ray Green called Avocet’s Managing Director asking for hardware samples for his new door it changed Kevin Harvey’s life. Kevin was happy to send the samples without a visit. But Kevin and Ray go back 10 years so Ray called Kevin, saying you really want to see this door: it’s new and different. It’s something special. “When I saw the door, I understood why Ray insisted I make the long trip from Brighouse to Bristol. I was blown away by it,” says Avocet Hardware’s MD Kevin Harvey. Ray Green, owner of Legacy Windows in Bristol has made and installed large numbers of bi-folds and seen their appeal to consumers. But he was determined to find a solution that would improve on the bi-fold experience. After a lot of development work and a number of patent applications, Ray is launching New Wave Doors. “As soon as I saw it,” says Kevin, “I knew I was looking at the future: the successor to the bi-fold.

This New Wave door isn’t a small improvement; it is truly next generation and the most exciting development in doors I’ve seen. When I got back to Brighouse I knew I just had to be part of it. But I had a busy job as MD of Avocet Hardware. Yet I couldn’t ignore the door, or Ray’s requests to become a part of New Wave so I discussed it with Avocet’s chairman and owner VK Jain, Chairman of Atlantic Group. It would not be true to say he was thrilled when I said I wanted to run Avocet as MD and help Ray, as part of New Wave, to bring this revolutionary door to market. But he did agree, and from December 1st I’m dividing my time between New Wave and Avocet! www.legacyconservatories.co.uk/new-wave-doors.html or call 01179 074801.

BM TRADA’s Huge response from FairTrades and HomePro members In August 2012, FairTrades and HomePro joined forces with leading international certification body BM TRADA, to offer FairTrades glazing members the option to self certify for the replacement of Windows and Doors, using BM TRADA’s Competent Persons Scheme. The goal was for 100 FairTrades and HomePro members to join the scheme in the first year, but in the first three months alone, a staggering 181 members have already requested application forms. With the average time to complete the application process being just a few weeks, 28 FairTrades and HomePro members are either already able to self certify or are close to completing the process for joining the scheme. Warren Stiles, Head of Client Development for HomePro Group said ‘‘we are delighted to have teamed up with BM TRADA. Their expertise and professional approach to business makes them the perfect choice as our

Competent Persons Scheme operator. The uptake of scheme membership has surpassed expectation. Our members are now able to benefit from using FairTrades as a single source solution for all of their Trade Association glazing needs”. The aim was to make the process for Self Certification as straightforward as possible, for both current members of FairTrades and HomePro and any new members wishing to take up membership and join BM TRADA’s Competent Persons Scheme at the same time. The application form is quick and easy to fill in and where the information is already collected by FairTrades and HomePro the

member does not need to provide it a second time. It is done on their behalf. What this now means is that as well as being part of the UK’s largest multi-trade trade association, members can also register their Insurance Backed Guarantees and declare compliance with Building Regulations, in a single operation. DGCOS ‘excellent mediation’ resolved Global Door’s problem Global Door, an online supplier of composite doors to trade and consumers, joined DGCOS at the first opportunity. As an online retailer Sales Manager Andrew Napoleon recognised the value of membership. “With potential customers looking at several websites,” says Andrew, “we felt membership of the scheme would distinguish us as a reputable company, especially as DGCOS is endorsed by Nick Ross. We don’t have a showroom so customers

don’t get to see our products before they order and pay a deposit. Endorsement by a third party, DGCOS, gives them confidence in the product and service we are offering.” Global Door has recently been grateful to the DGCOS mediation team when a customer disputed the installation of a door. The problem arose when the customer felt the door frame didn’t match the door. He didn’t want the door and demanded his deposit back. Andrew Napoleon continues: “We arrived to fit the door he had ordered but he would not let us go ahead with the installation. He felt that he had been miss-sold and no longer wanted the door. We had already purchased the door and didn’t think we had miss-sold it as our documentation states the materials used for the frame and the door are different. It came to a point where we were at loggerheads with the customer and couldn’t see how to proceed, so we decided to call on DGCOS. The mediation service was excellent. They took the whole thing away from us, found the middle ground and the issue was resolved within a few days. The customer had the door installed after we shared the cost of having it colour bonded to match the frame. We are very proud of the service and products we offer so we were pleased DGCOS helped us settle things to everyone’s satisfaction without any cost.” For more information about DGCOS visit www.dgcos.org.uk or call 0845 053 8975.

‘Homes by Senior’ Lennart Jonsson - Managing Director of Senior Architectural Systems Well respected in the Commercial Fenestration Sector, Senior Architectural Systems are poised to enter the Home Improvement and New House Build Sector with a range of Hybrid products, which are proving to be very popular with homeowners. Senior Hybrid Systems offer clients a wide range of Windows and Doors which combine the long life and low maintenance of Aluminium on the outside with the high insulation, environmentally focused benefits of 100% PEFC accredited Timber to the inside. Hybrid’s Fifth Birthday

Since its launch, almost five years ago, Hybrid has grown to be one of the most successful products for Senior’s. Lennart Jonsson, Senior’s MD, explains, “The Hybrid Timber Aluminium Composite Window was the first system of its kind designed and supplied by Senior’s in the UK. Five years ago Installers were waiting ten weeks or more for a single order from the large European Composite Window Suppliers, Hybrid managed to slash those delivery times by making available a System in bar form, exstock, which could be easily be manufactured in any Aluminium fabrication workshop.

‘Homes by Senior’ brochure

We wanted to give our Fabricators something that they could challenge our European colleagues with, and so Hybrid was born. Very quickly we saw the need to add both Curtain Wall and Door Systems to the Hybrid Range so that our customers could tackle virtually any Commercial Project that specified Timber Aluminium Composite Systems.” A dedicated UK focus

Senior’s have worked very closely with their Fabricators in the UK and, unlike other European Systems Companies, Senior’s have always been able to adapt their market focus very quickly to suit a rapidly changing climate. As Hybrid specifications continue to increase, the Product Range is constantly under development. The Hybrid System now includes a Sliding Folding Door configuration and a large Lift and Slide Door arrangement. With the focus on development aimed at the UK and Ireland markets, products have been developed in consultation with customers and homeowners. Over the past few years there has been a welldocumented shift in the Home Improvement sector, partially driven by the high costs of moving house, and by the rising popularity of TV programmes such as ‘Grand Designs’. ‘Open Plan’ living is also gaining popularity once again, as is the single story extension often constructed in an ‘Orangery’ style. These extensions are normally completed with a large expanse of glass from floor to ceiling and often use Sliding Folding Doors, which open up the room to the garden for use on sunny days. These extensions are being completed as an investment to the home and now often use high quality materials such as Aluminium, and Timber Aluminium composite products, such as Hybrid.

New lifestyle Brochures will be available which will show homeowners some examples of Projects recently completed and include large expanses of Curtain Wall Framing as well as Door and Window Systems. ‘Homes by Senior’ will be raising the finish quality even further with the choice of seven standard, ex-stock, paint finishes for the external aluminium, including the new ‘Futura’ finish from Interpon. ‘Futura’ offers a textured metallic powder coat, which offers a rich matt finish to the Profile. Internally there is a choice of 100% PEFC accredited lacquered Timber and an option for a painted timber finish. A ready made option

To ensure availability of products to an even wider customer base of Installers and Builders, the Seniors Hybrid System will, for the first time, be available in a Ready-Made option. Fabricated to both standard sizes and bespoke sizes through Senior’s extensive network of Fabricators across the country, Ready Made Doors can be ordered locally from a nationally published price list. To support the Installer will be a dedicated support phone line, website and staff at Senior’s giving the Installer all the information they need for a successful installation.

CBI: Government has everything to prove by delivering Responding to the Autumn Statement, CBI John Cridland, CBI Director-General, said: “The CBI has been crying out for real action on infrastructure, investment and exports. “£5 billion on near-term infrastructure, half a billion a year tax relief for small firms, and £1.5 billion extra export support should boost investment and create jobs. “The Government now has everything to prove

by delivering. The Chancellor has stuck to his guns on deficit reduction - avoiding deeper cuts or more borrowing in order to retain international credibility. We back speeding up the release of public sector land and throwing efforts behind kick-starting large,

‘the chancellor has gone further than expected’

stalled sites to get the housing market moving. “What matters now is how quickly we can get shovels in the ground. Investors will be buoyed by the new model to channel private finance into UK infrastructure ending months of uncertainty. Now we must use this momentum to get Britain building.” “The Chancellor has gone further than expected by cutting

the headline corporation tax rate by an extra 1%, which sends a clear signal that the UK is a leading place to invest.“Increasing the Annual Investment Allowance from £25,000 to £250,000 for two years will stimulate business investment in buildings and machinery, particularly by SMEs. Extending the enhanced small business rate relief for another year will be good news for firms facing significant cost pressures.

CHRIS WINS BWF APPRENTICE AWARD An apprentice joiner at GS Haydon & Son Ltd in South Molton, Devon has won the prestigious British Woodworking Federation (BWF) Apprentice of the Year Award 2012. At a glittering dinner at Lord’s Cricket Ground Pavilion on Friday attended by UK joinery industry’s most senior figures and business leaders, 18 year old Chris Lake was presented with his award by Stuart Littlefair, Specialist Manager from CITBConstructionSkills which sponsored the award. Chris also received a £150 cash prize from management consultants Lignum Associates.

Chris said: “I’m made up with this award! It was a huge surprise and it’s great to get an award for doing something I really love doing. My uncle is a joiner and I always enjoyed doing some basic carpentry on the family farm as well as at school, so I started looking for joinery apprenticeships as soon as I left school. “I applied to loads of places and after two weeks’ work experience at GS Haydon & Son, they offered me the opportunity I’d always wanted. It has been fantastic. I have received a lot of very good training, and now I get to do much more than I ever thought I’d be allowed to do in my apprenticeship – bench work, working with machinery like spindle

moulders, panel saws and mortices, and not too much sweeping up! I enjoy it all.” Graham Haydon, MD of GS Haydon & Son Ltd, said: “Chris showed promise from the beginning, even in the professional manner of his CV. Since he has started with us, Chris has shown an impressive work ethic, the right attitudes and aptitudes. Learning the basics fast, he has quickly moved onto more complex tasks and he is assisting other team members with their work.” www.bwf.org.uk

2012 has been a big year...

The VEKA UK Group rounded off 2012 with four awards collected within the space of just a few weeks.

VEKA Sales and Marketing Director Colin Torley believes this is a good representation, not only of excellent product quality, but also of how hard the entire team has worked this year: “The last few months have thrown up several reasons for the team here at VEKA to celebrate. Most recently, we’ve collected a G12 award for ‘Energy Efficiency Initiative of the Year’, a trophy for ‘Environmental Innovation’ at the Lancashire Business Environment Awards and the award for ‘Deal of the Year’ at the Lancashire Telegraph Business Awards. “Meanwhile, Network VEKA was busy collecting the award for ‘Outstanding Achievement regarding Environmental

Sustainability in the PVC-U Replacement Window sector’ at the 2012 NHIC (National Home Improvement Council) Annual Awards. “As if that wasn’t enough, 2012 saw work commence on a new £4million mixing plant at VEKA’s Burnley Head Office. Once finished, it will be the most technicallyadvanced mixing plant in the UK, capable of processing almost double our current capacity in tonnes. “Along with the rest of the team, I look forward to seeing what more the VEKA UK Group can achieve in the New Year.” VEKA plc, 01282 716611, www.vekauk.com, salesenquiry@veka.com

GREEN DEAL ‘STRUGGLING’ SAYS TRUSTMARK The launch of the Coalition’s flagship green energy project seems to be struggling after a Government minister admitted that not a single household has yet registered for the deal. Greg Barker, the climate change minister, has admitted that “no assessments have yet been lodged” on the Government’s official register by homeowners. The energy industry has called on DECC to launch an urgent marketing campaign to alert homeowners to the scheme. Energy UK, which represents energy companies, has said that members of the public are simply unaware of the Green Deal: “If you ask people

what they think of the Green Deal they will say ‘I don’t know what it means, will you tell me about it?’”. The Green Deal is the Government’s flagship policy to make homes more energy efficient and – ultimately - cut energy bills, which have soared in recent years. Last week British Gas raised prices for the 10 million homes it supplies, and other large companies have done the same. The idea is that bills will fall once the loan has been paid off because the houses need less energy. Central to the deal is the ‘golden rule’, which states that the expected savings that a homeowner ultimately makes must be equal to or be greater than the cost of the work being done.

Speaking in June 2011, Mr Barker said that the Green Deal would be “the biggest home improvement programme since the Second World War” In an effort to kick-start interest, DECC announced a £125 million ‘cashback’ scheme, offering homes up to £1,000 if they sign up as ‘early adopters’. The scheme has the potential to create thousands of jobs and help everyone lower their energy bills. According to one of TrustMark’s scheme operators, the Federation of Master Builders has confirmed that only one firm from its 10,000-strong membership has signed up to become an accredited Green Deal installer at the present moment.

Customers Recognise Outstanding Delivery Performance Hurst Plastics transport department certainly has cause to celebrate at the moment, after being recognised by their customers for achieving outstanding performance on deliveries over the last six months. The department, consisting of a team of nine drivers, not only surpassed their average month on month target of 98%, for ontime-in-full delivery performance, but also gained accreditation from customers praising them for outstanding service. Jon Brake, Transport Manager for Hurst Plastics commented, “It’s been fantastic, not only to outperform our internal performance targets, but to receive such overwhelming feedback from customers congratulating the department on our consistent helpfulness, competence and cheeriness is a real credit to the team. One particular customer commented, ‘their buying experience had been heightened by the professionalism shown from the Hurst drivers, topping that of any other suppliers they dealt with’. “We always encourage our frontline staff to work with customers and review their needs. Together, our drivers have over 70-years combined service working for Hurst and have built up strong relationships over the years delivering a regular and consistent service. “The driver’s input has been invaluable to help us understand our customer’s individual delivery needs and improve our service. It is important for us to be able to offer flexibility; in turn allows us to tailor deliveries around customer’s opening times, rectify a customer’s problem ‘on-the-spot’ and combine orders to reduce deliveries, all contributing towards the last six months achievements,” adds Jon. Mark Atkinson, Sales Director for Hurst Plastics added, “We are extremely pleased with the achievement and volume of compliments our transport department have received. Transport and deliveries can sometimes be an emotive subject within a business, so credit also to our customers for recognising their efforts.” Hurst Plastics run a fleet of twelve Mercedes-Benz Spinter vans, covering the whole of the UK. All vans are specially fitted with tracking devices, making it easy to supply customer’s information for delivers. Further plans to improve the service are in place for early 2013 to enable customers to track their deliveries on-line. More information will be supplied by Hurst over forthcoming months. For more information regarding flexible delivery or other services and products from Hurst Plastics contact on 01482 790790.

Clayton and NEG announce strategic partnership Clayton Glass and Northern Express Glass are collaborating in a strategic venture, creating what they say will be an independent alliance within the IGU industry across the North of the UK. “Initially Clayton Glass will be taking a minority shareholding in NEG”, said Ryan Green, MD of Clayton Glass. “However, in thinking through the process, it has quickly become apparent that there is far greater benefit to be had from working together than the financial aspect alone”. “Each business has its own particular strengths, be that machinery, capacity or specific skill base, so by joining forces we can make the most efficient use of a pooled resource base, to the benefit of all of our

‘there is far greater benefit to be had’

customers and employees”. Paul Williams, NEG partner added, “Both businesses are already successful in their own rights, offering a high quality sealed unit, delivered with a great level of personal service that our customers love. Nothing in that respect will change whatsoever, but by collaborating in this way we become more resilient as a team, have a greater geographical reach and more manufacturing capability to call on if needed”. The two companies will continue to operate independently from each other, albeit with some cross supply of specialist products and joint venture project work. Combined IGU capacity is in excess of 25,000 standard and 4,000 roof units per week, with the new set up including five tempering furnaces and five automated IG lines, across four separate sites.

£4m ‘re-thinking’ investment to enable greener buildings Government funding totalling nearly £4 million is to be invested in eight major new research and development projects that aim to rethink build processes in the UK, helping to deliver zero and low carbon buildings more consistently. The grant funding, from the UK’s innovation agency, the Technology Strategy Board will give construction companies, developers and architects leading the projects, the opportunity to explore and test the viability of new integrated ways of working that will improve build consistency, cost-effectiveness, speed and sustainability. Iain Gray, Chief Executive of the Technology Strategy Board, said: “The Government has challenged industry to reduce construction costs by up to 30%, which would enable low carbon buildings to be constructed for the cost of a standard building. The work we are funding will encourage the UK

construction industry to undertake a fundamental rethink of current ways of working and enable businesses to explore potential commercial opportunities created by novel design, procurement and construction processes.” The R&D projects will be led by: A2 Dominion Group (Oxford), Balfour Beatty Construction Northern Ltd (Manchester), Edward Cullinan Architects Ltd (London), Grimshaw Architects LLP (London), Rider Levett Bucknall (Birmingham), Skanska Technology (Rickmansworth, Herts), The Clarkson Alliance (Oxford) and Willmott Dixon Capital Works, Birmingham. The grant awards stem from the ‘Rethinking the Build Process’ competition for collaborative research and development, managed by the Technology Strategy Board through its Low Impact Buildings Innovation Platform (LIBIP).

PFI relaunched as PF2 with wave of projects In his Autumn Statement, Chancellor George Osborne has unveiled a wave of projects to go forward under the revamped version of PFI to be known as PF2. The centrepiece of the new Private Finance 2 initiative will be the release of the £1.75bn programme to build and refurbish 219 schools. PF2 will also be used to build the next generation of hospitals and roads. Under the revamped PFI, the Government will become a minority stakeholder in project companies, giving it a seat on the board and a share of profits. Typically it is expected to take

48

JAN 2013

a stake of around 20%, but it could be as high as 49%. Project companies will also be made to publish details of profits and also make transparent future taxpayer liabilities. Mr Osborne will attempt to speed up the project pipeline by setting an 18-month limit on project negotiations to avoid a re-run of the painfully lengthy PFI process where projects could take up to five years to reach financial

close. The Chancellor said he has saved £1.5bn by renegotiating current PFI deals with a further £1bn expected to be clawed back in continuing talks with the private sector. The drawn out review of PFI has caused a big hiatus in major projects coming forward, but the Chancellor will now commit the Government to press ahead with a raft of new schemes to help kick-start the economy.

SYNSEAL CREATES NEW OPPORTUNITIES WITH TRIPLE GLAZING BEAD Synseal has launched new triple glazing beads that allow casement windows and doors, made with Legend 70 or Shield PVC-U profiles, to incorporate a 40mm triple glazed unit, whilst SynerJy PVC-U profiles can incorporate a 36mm triple glazed unit. The new beads are available in White, three woodgrains, and 13 Artisan colours. The primary reason for offering triple glazed windows is that they are extremely energy efficient – and much quieter. Triple glazed windows are also more secure than double

glazed windows because they are harder to break, especially if the middle pane is made of toughened glass. David Leng, Chief Executive of Synseal Extrusions said: “While today’s double glazed windows are far superior to earlier designs, nothing wins the homeowner over more than an extra pane of glass, making them the perfect marketing tool. “In typical Synseal style, we’ve made this an option for our customers thanks to our new glazing beads.” Synseal’s market-leading Legend 70 PVC-U profiles using the latest 7

chamber inner frames and 5 chamber outer frames coupled with all Argon filled triple glazed unit supplied by Global Glass can deliver a ‘full window’ U-value of 0.8W/m2k or better.

‘Astounding response’ to VEKA UK seminars When the VEKA UK Group organised a series of industry seminars, the team didn’t anticipate the astounding response they would have. Hundreds of fabricators and installers, using profile systems

of all types (not just VEKA and Halo), attended the four seminars hosted at football grounds across the UK. Colin Torley VEKA Sales and Marketing Director explained: “There are some important changes in legislation in the glazing industry coming up. Our aim was to help fabricators and installers stay abreast of these and understand how their businesses would be affected. We

also covered how The VEKA UK Group can assist our customers with implementing these changes. “We covered compulsory CE Marking, MTCs and the Green Deal, as well as introducing some of our new products and demonstrating our personalised print portal - for creating completely individual marketing materials. “We also presented ‘assure’ – our competent persons scheme, which means that we are

the only systems company to be able to offer a complete in-house solution. “The sheer number of attendees showed that these seminars were well-timed, and we received a large number of questions throughout the day.” VEKA plc, 01282 716611, www.vekauk.com, salesenquiry@veka.com

SUCCESSFUL KNOWLEDGE SHARING DAY AT LISTERS For installers trying to sell in a difficult market, being well informed and well armed with the latest products and information is vital for success. But it can be hard for installers focused on the day-to-day business to keep abreast of every issue that will affect their businesses. Lister Trade Frames has long recognised that the best way to impart knowledge is face to face, which is why

50

JAN 2013

it hosts an annual trade open day. Last month saw Listers deliver a whole range of its new products and support packages and introduce customers to new products from key suppliers such as Ultraframe, Internorm, Beaumont and Roto.“To add even more value we hired Len Foster, a professional sales coach, to deliver a seminar to bolster our customers’ selling techniques,” said Phil Warren, Sales Director.

“Feedback was phenomenal so we intend to follow this up with more of these bespoke seminars in 2013.”Attendees received information packs for customers offering one-to-one discussions on topics such as CE Marking, Green Deal and Health & Safety legislation to help them understand the changes the industry will be undergoing this year.

Green bank makes first construction investments The UK Green Investment Bank has made its first two investments to help build a waste plant in Teesside and make Kingspan’s factories more energy efficient. Business secretary Vince Cable announced the two schemes at the bank’s Edinburgh headquarters as it officially opened for business.

The bank has committed an initial £8m towards construction of an Anaerobic Digestion (AD) plant at Teesside. This will attract a further £8m of matching private sector funding and is the first of six plants planned over the next five years. The bank will also invest £5m to retrofit Kingspan’s UK industrial facilities with

systems and services that will reduce its energy consumption by as much as 15%. The first project will take place at Kingspan’s Holywell factory in North Wales and is due to start shortly. Cable said: “The Green Investment Bank – a key coalition pledge – is now a reality.”

Lister chooses new Roto hinge Lister Trade Frames has chosen the new Roto DoorLine Solid 150P as the only hinge to be used on their entire door range. From now on, the Roto model will be a standard part of every Listers door set.

“We’re committed to ensuring our range of windows and doors remains cutting edge”, says Operations Director, Darren Pusey. “That’s why we’re always looking to source groundbreaking or state-of-the-art products. We don’t go on price. It’s about quality. We do our research carefully before choosing anything new. The benefits have to be there for our trade customers”. DoorLine Solid 150P is the latest addition to the Roto range of residential door hinges, which are already widely used across the industry on PAS 24 accredited door sets. “We’ve used Roto products for many years, so we already know them as a German brand, renowned for precision engineering,” says Darren. “We’re assured of quality. The question is, does the hinge deliver what our customers require and also offer additional benefits? In this case, every answer is yes. It has

‘our range of windows and doors remains cutting edge’

52

JAN 2013

all the accreditations, including CE marking. “We know the hinge meets all the requirements for security and life cycle testing. But with Roto, it’s about the other details too. “The cover caps don’t drop off, they have a very positive fit. If a cap or screw were to be lost, the backup from Roto is excellent: all spares are on the shelf and ready to go”. Making life as easy as possible for installers is obviously a major concern for the fabricator, who are based in Stoke-on-Trent but operate throughout the Midlands and the North. “Roto hinges have a built-in anti-lift facility,” says Darren. “That’s a security benefit for the homeowner, but it also creates a practical advantage for the installer. They don’t need to pack out the air gap or clamp the sash when toe-and-heeling. It means they can install a door faster and more accurately”. “Essentially, we believe this hinge further enhances the Listers residential door. It means our trade installers have a better product overall. One that also helps them by leading to fewer call-backs”.

GGF FEEDS THE MEDIA BEAST At the end of November last year, Clearview’s assistant Editor, Becky Taylor, had the pleasure of attending the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) Christmas Media Lunch, beginning with an exclusive Trade Media briefing by James Lee, GGF Marketing and Communications Manager at the GGF London Offices. The briefing gave introduction to the new GGF Media Hub and previewed the new GGF promotional video; a punchy 3-minute production entitled “Why do we exist?” The video, now live on the GGF’s website, consists of a selection of comments about the Federation by a cross-section of GGF Members. This is a new strand to the GGF communications strategy and will be used online and in social media to highlight the benefits of being a GGF Member. The Media Hub is housed within the GGF website and consists of: • An image bank of GGF images, logos, videos and adverts • A library of press releases, feature articles, news stories and consultation documents and publications • An updated list of current topics and areas covered • The GGF Events 2013 List • The GGF Twitter Feed • The latest news on the GGF ticker tape with live links to news stories • A who’s who at the Federation The new Media Hub will be fully accessible from this month and is accessible by individual log in only. This exciting new development will surely prove an invaluable resource to the glass and glazing media and forms a key part of GGF’s Marketing and Communications objectives for 2013.

Later, at the Media Lunch, GGF Chief Executive, Nigel Rees, explained the logic behind the Media Hub and what else we can expect to see from GGF in 2013. ‘Team GGF’ has been busy getting out and about, meeting with Members to find out what they want and need. In the last 10 weeks of 2012, the Federation held a Members’ Satisfaction Survey to help the GGF understand its membership more and subsequently to improve both Members’ benefits and the GGF’s operations. One such operation is the media relations side of the GGF and the Media Hub has been cleverly launched to ensure the media can access latest information at any time, should they need to. The Hub will provide a constant resource of information for publications so that information of GGF’s activities is kept at the forefront of industry news. Another issue discussed was that of companies operating under the GGF branding, when they are not in fact GGF Members. In 2013, GGF aims to combat this by providing more ways for a Member to promote its membership, such as identification cards, stickers and literature. Green Deal video goes live Leads2trade, the company behind the Trusted Local Suppliers Network, has released a video to explain how installers can benefit from the Green Deal. Andy Royle, Leads2trade’s Sales Director, explains: “We’ve followed the Green Deal process very closely and it has certainly received much analysis and comment. “But amongst SME installers there is still uncertainty as to how they will benefit from the scheme. The video we have produced will give viewers a succinct overview of what the scheme is and then explains how via our Green Deal network, they can benefit from it.” Green Deal is a government initiative

designed to improve the energy efficiency of homes across the UK through ‘measures’ such as windows, doors, boilers, insulation and the latest renewable energy products. In Leads2trade’s video it is explained how installers can access Green Deal funded work and how Leads2trade will equip them with the necessary accreditations and software to do so. ENERGYEFFICIENCY

The Energy Bill and UK solar The Energy Bill finally presented to Parliament last month, includes a number of factors that will to impact significantly on the UK solar market. The most obvious new policy that will have the greatest effect on solar deployment in the UK is the introduction of Feed-in Tariff Contracts for Difference (FiT CfD). CfD’s are long-term instruments designed to provide stable, predictable incentives for companies to invest in low-carbon generation (including nuclear). CfD will be replacing the current Renewable Obligation mechanism for incentivising the development of large-scale low-carbon generation plants. FiT CfD works by offering stable revenue for generators at a fixed price level called the ‘strike price’. Under FiT CfD, generators will generate revenue from selling electricity to the market as normal but when the market

‘The approach so far has been top down’

reference point is below the stated strike price, the supplier will receive a ‘top-up’ payment from suppliers. Conversely, if the market reference price is higher than the strike price then the generator must refund the difference. The most important aspect of the FiT CfD for solar is how the strike price will be set and the level it will be set at. The Government’s position is still that the best way to determine strike prices in the long term is through competitive price setting, but until market conditions can support such processes, prices for all low-carbon technologies will be set administratively or through negotiation. For renewable technologies the initial process will be similar to that used for the most recent Renewables Obligation banding review, giving visibility of prices for a five-year period to enable long-term planning. The build-up to the publication of the Energy Bill has been dominated by the clash between the Conservative-led Treasury and the Liberal Democrat-led Department of Energy and Climate Change. The two departments have allegedly been unable to agree over the role that renewables and gas will have in the UK’s future energy mix. Addressing the Commons, Energy Secretary Ed Davey defended the inclusion of a gas strategy in the Energy Bill, stating: “Often debate is characterised as gas versus renewables; we need gas and renewables.” But Ray Noble, PV specialist for the Solar Trade Association (STA) has called on the Government to introduce a dedicated solar power strategy as well. He said: “If the UK

can have a gas strategy it must have a solar power strategy. That strategy should focus on removing unfair barriers to solar power, such as obstacles to grid access. It should also set out a pathway to grid parity to empower millions of people to take control of their energy bills. “Solar could readily deliver a third of the UK’s power supply, using south-facing roofs and facades alone. This technology will be massive. Furthermore solar puts the power to generate directly in the hands of millions, not the few. DECC and its Electricity Market Reform agenda now need to fully recognise the major role that solar power will play in transforming our electricity markets. “The approach so far has been top down. Solar power means a bottom-up energy revolution and any government serious about breaking open the electricity market to much greater consumer choice and competition should be right behind us.” Alongside the Energy Bill, Ed Davey launched a government consultation on proposals to promote energy efficiency and reduce the need for expensive investment in new electricity generation capacity. Among the proposals is a financial incentive scheme that would pay companies for every kWh of electricity saved through energy saving measures. It is unclear at this point, whether electricity generated on-site by a solar installation would count as energy saved. Source: Solar Power Portal. Image credit: nPower.

TOP MARKS FROM HEGLA With new trade legislation for CE marking, the pressure is on processors to manufacture to exacting standards. Recognising glass processors are answerable to both customers and end users, Hegla has developed new technologies to help manufacturers accommodate new rules and make output more efficient. Hegla has introduced new laser marking technology that enables glass to be marked automatically before it is cut. Laser marking on the cutting table ensures that the correct production data is put onto the correct piece of glass and in the right sequence. The Hegla laser removes the need for marker pens with any potential ghosting

completely eradicated on coated products. Additionally, if the glass has the correct address for its production route, sequencing should be simpler with coatings guaranteed to be the correct way round and cavities in the correct position in relation to the coatings. Whether for double or triple glazed units the Hegla laser system incorporates the option to reverse-etch an image or specific data - imperative when producing units with multiple pieces of glass. Hegla’s laser technology was developed as an item that can be retrofitted. Enquiries: Tel 01908 261 933.

ARCHES AND CURVES DIVISION IS ON THE STRAIGHT AND NARROW Synseal’s entry into the niche sector of arched tops and curved frame manufacture may have been an unexpected move by the company but just 6 months on the division is trading profitably and growing steadily, says the company’s Chief Executive David Leng. The specialist bending division, managed by Jonathan Cunliffe, one of the UK’s most experienced exponents of arched and curved frame manufacture, is producing more than 400 frames a week for Synseal fabricators and also frame manufacturers using other profiles. The goal is to grow this figure substantially in 2013. The division, located at the K2 operational base in Lancashire, continues what Synseal set out to achieve with its Evolve vertical sliding sash fabrication service. David Leng explained:

JAN 2013

“We support our fabricator customers by fully manufacturing low volume niche products – such as vertical sliders and now curved and arched frames, and speciality windows such as gable ends – so they can focus their production on regular high volume products, such as standard casements and doors. This allows their factories to run at peak efficiency.”

This time last year there were 4,225 aluminium installers whereas today there are 4,640, which is an increase of some 10% in one year.” Aluminium has generally been seen as a product for the commercial market, but with

Having invested in a new aluminium bi-fold, many homeowners want their new door to match the other frames in their house and are taking out their old PVC windows and replacing them with aluminium. ‘Real Life’ Study Proves Efficiency Using EcoClear sealed units in triple glazed windows, H Jarvis has helped researchers at Nottingham University demonstrate how Passivhaus design can cut energy usage in homes by 72%.

72

JAN 2013

The test, to demonstrate the difference in energy use between a property built to 2006 Building Regs and today’s Passivhaus standard, was completed with the support of GLASSOLUTIONS Solaglas and newbuild fabricator and installer H Jarvis. Two timber clad student bedroom pods were built and ‘lived in’ by students overnight so energy use could be monitored. The difference came in the thermal performance of the building or ‘pod’ fabric. Casement windows fabricated by H Jarvis using EcoClear sealed units from GLASSOLUTIONS Solaglas were fitted, providing a 1.6 W/m2K whole window

U-value in the 2006 spec pod and just 0.8 W/m2K in the Passivhaus pod. Results revealed that the student in the Passivhaus pod used just 28% of that used by the student occupying the Part L 2006 pod in the same period. The 0.8 windows combined a triple glazed EcoClear sealed unit manufactured by GLASSOLUTIONS Solaglas with a multichamber Sheerframe profile to deliver a highly insulated solution with low thermal conductivity.

HARDWARE&SECURITY

Does your current door hardware come with a 25 year guarantee? The sight of corroded, failing door hardware is becoming increasingly common on homes all over the country. And while the appearance is unappealing for homeowners, it’s even more unappealing for installers needing to fit replacements when the hardware hasn’t lived up to its guarantee or expectation. But for customers of Trojan, the trouble caused by failing hardware can be a thing of the past, thanks to the Company’s suite of all stainless steel door furniture. Tony Chadwick, the Trojan Group Managing Director, says, “Zinc-based plated products very often meet Class 4 corrosion resistance standards, but the fact is that standard isn’t sufficient any longer. Salt, acid erosion and our increasingly harsh winters mean that many products are failing much more quickly than they used to. Stainless steel brings back peace of mind for customers – and we’re so confident in its abilities to withstand corrosion that all products in the range come with a 25 year guarantee.” The Trojan stainless steel door furniture range comprises a handle, letter plate, door knocker, numerals and flag hinges. Each item is available at three price points, making stainless steel an option for every project, no matter what its budget.

DEAREDITOR

The easy route on CE Marking Dear Pat, There has been a lot in the press recently about the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) and upcoming deadline for compulsory CE Marking, and with good reason. Come July of next year it will be mandatory for all products placed on the UK market to carry a CE Mark. The responsibility for this lies with manufacturers, but, from an installer’s point of view, this means that, if they buy their insulated glass units and frames from separate suppliers they are themselves considered manufacturers. Installers now, therefor, have just months to familiarise themselves with the CPR and put

a documented Factory Production Control procedure (FPC) in place. While we are in favour of any measures that will raise standards within the industry, we do feel it is unhelpful for yet another layer of process, not to mention cost, to be put in place just as we are being led to believe by Government that they want to help the industry by cutting down on red tape and focus on getting the economy out of the doldrums by helping SMEs. Certain factions are already offering advice and guidance to help installers self-CE Mark in time for the changes, which we applaud. But by far the easiest and most effective way to ensure compliance in terms of accuracy

and cost, is to buy frames already glazed from fabricator partners and let them put the work in on your behalf. Tradelink is a World Class Manufacturing organisation and, as such we pre-qualify for CE Marking and can offer installer customers our expertise of FPC and take the added pressure of CE Marking from them. If you’d like to talk to somebody about any concerns you have about CE Marking or any other industry legislation issues, please feel free to get in touch. Jim Moody Managing Director, Tradelink.

Accreditation brings out the best Dear Pat, There are a large number of hardware suppliers in the market making noise about their Security hardware products, which is something we believe should be applauded. As a manufacturer synonymous with innovation, quality and performance of handles, it’s no surprise that we aim to stay ahead of market demand. In fact, that’s why we use with confidence the tagline ‘we lead, others follow’. Achieving accreditation for the relevant standards is extremely important to us and something that drives our development. The recent launch of our next generation products saw us introduce what customers tell us is the most innovative security handle on the market – developed to meet and exceed PAS24 Product Assessment Specification 2007+A2: 2011 (clause A.11, Part 1). We have also recently achieved a two star rating under the new retrofit security standard TS007 for our new ‘Birmingham’ series of door handles. With the 2012 version of PAS24 now released – with some significant inclusions with regards to window security - we are

working hard behind the scenes to ensure our Security handles will pass the tests. As the former clause A.11, parts 1, 2 & 3 element of the testing remains unchanged, we are sure we have nothing to worry about.

‘This is reflected in our own phenomenal sales growth year on year resulting over the period in sales in excess of 750,000 security door handles in the UK alone.’ HOPPE group has been at the forefront in manufacturing security door handles for over 30 years, selling products all over Europe. During this time we have always met the different rigorous hardware standards required by many countries within the EU. HOPPE UK was the first to introduce security door

handles to the UK in 2006 and since then we have continued to lead the market. This is reflected in our own phenomenal sales growth year on year resulting over the period in sales in excess of 750,000 security door handles in the UK alone. Our products are widely specified for local authorities, house builders and social housing contracts. Our latest Security Handle has been designed with the PAS24:2012 accreditation in mind and we will be first in the queue when the testing begins – currently there is limited test house resource to allow the tests to happen. We value the fact that the market is driven by tough standards, as we are able to prove to our customers that our products are more than fit for purpose. This is a true indication of our dominant position as a market leader in the manufacturer of security door handles.

Roger Benton Joint Managing Director, HOPPE (UK) Ltd.

CONSERVATORIES

PORTAL FRAME SUCCESS ON DISPLAY A SkySpace portal frame from Synseal Extrusions has enabled a motorbike shop owner win a battle against the elements, while providing a conservatory company with a straightforward and satisfying installation. Jax Motorcycles in York deals in second hand bikes from top leading brands such as Harley Davidson, Triumph and BMW. Until recently, a small showroom meant that owner Kevin Strickland had to move all the bikes out on to the court each morning, before moving them all back under cover in the evening. Kevin in, therefore, turned to local installation specialists Minster Windows for an all-weather solution and Minster. Minster, in turn, approached its product supplier, Yorkshire Trade Windows who scoured the market for the best portal frame for the job.

Minster typically installs domestic conservatories, but despite the size of the Jax Motorcycles project, installation of the wide spanning portal frame was fairly straightforward. “It was the biggest project that we had been involved with for about 10 years,” explained Minter’s Chris Partridge.

“We had four guys working on the job, and we had technical support from Synseal.” Apart from one slight hiccup on site, it wasn’t challenging in the slightest.” Synseal’s SkySpace portal frame extends the showroom, allowing the majority of the motorbikes to be permanently displayed safely under cover.

Kingsbridge Installations sales improve with Consumer Credit Solutions Kingsbridge Installations, the Croydon based supplier of windows, doors and conservatories, has always offered credit finance to its customers to help them buy. But it wasn’t until they started working with Consumer Credit Solutions (CCS) earlier this year they realised how straightforward and simple it could be.

Neil Kilgour of Kingsbridge explains: “Many of our customers are not in a position to buy from us until they can arrange the finance. Following a recommendation we looked at what CCS offers and went with them because they offer very good finance rates - better than the banks – and there’s no hard sell involved.

‘customers are not in a position to buy’ “Their service is excellent,” continues Neil, “and the documentation our sales team has to complete is much simpler. CCS really understands our industry – which hasn’t been the case with credit finance providers we’ve used before - and they know salespeople aren’t interested in pushing high interest, hard sell finance.” “Since using CCS,” continues Neil, “our credit sales have increased. Interest rates are very favourable so it’s easy to sell. And our sales force appreciates the simple documentation. Backed up by excellent training and support from CCS, they are happy to sell “Buy Now Pay Later”, “Cash Option”, low interest or interest free credit finance. Our customers are now in a position to buy and our sales have improved.” To find out more about Kingsbridge Installations go to www.kingsbridgehome.co.uk. PALMER REPORT: A TALE OF TWO TRENDS Conservatories continue to decline in popularity – but those who do choose them are opting for more expensive products, according to the latest report from Palmer. In 2011 the number of conservatories installed declined for the eighth year running, this time down 8% to 86,100, the lowest number since 1993. Yet the installed value actually rose, by 12%. Robert Palmer puts the rising value down to five specific trends: an trend towards bigger conservatories; greater use of wood; a small but growing incidence of the Orangery; the use of glass, instead of polycarbonate, roofs; and a greater incidence of bifold, rather than hinged, doors. So is the conservatory changing from an aspirational product for the many, to a luxury product for the few? Average installed prices have been on a more or less upward path for the last 10 years, but 2011 showed a jump of 22%. While the market share taken by installations defined as budget and midmarket declined, those with a value of over £15,000 doubled their share to make up

78

JAN 2013

nearly a third of the total. The very top end– installations with a value of over £20,000 – also doubled in share from eight to 16%. Reflecting this trend in the dominant home improvement sector, it was the specialist installer channel, where the average price is over £19,000, that did best. In volume terms, this continues to be a market in decline, and Palmer predicts little change in terms of installations over the next few years. He says that in 2016 the market will be 6% larger than in 2011, but still 3% below that of 2010. But emphasises that, “Although we don’t include price rises in our forecast, it seems likely that the value of the market will continue to increase”. The orangery, while still a minority product, now takes 6% of the market in just the second year in which it has been recorded separately. Conservatories are also getting bigger with the average floor area size increasing by 11%.

Those with floor areas of 20 square metres and above are taking more market share. Although PVCU continues to be the dominant frame material, representing 87% of the market, the use of wood frames is growing. For roofs, polycarbonate was dominant as recently as 2008, but since then has had to take second place to glass. Bifold doors were the only door type to grow over the last year, tripling in size - although the double-hinged product still dominates with 78% of the total. The tiny New Build market, which represents less than 2% of the total conservatories market, fell again this year to just 1,200 installations. The report is based on Palmer’s main report on the Window, Door and Conservatory Markets in Housing in Great Britain. www.palmermarketresearch.co.uk

‘OLYMPIC’ INSTALLATION BY SIKA ROOF ASSURED INSTALLER, VOLSEN LTD A 180m2 Sika Sarnafil single ply roof membrane has been installed on the roof of a swimming pool extension at a heritage home in Mudeford, Dorset. The project was carried out by Sika Roof Assured registered installer, Volsen Limited, based in nearby Bournemouth. The client’s brief to the team at Volsen was that he wanted a finished roof that would not only look good, but perform well. The Sarnafil single ply membrane had all the credentials and with a BBA certification for a life expectancy in excess of 40 years offered that extra

reassurance that customers want to hear. The roof was completed with a lead batten detail, which was particularly important for this project, where the look of the finished ‘new’ roof had to blend with other lead roofs at the location. A lead batten detail is not only a cost effective way of replicating the heritage look of a traditional lead roof but also takes away the risk of ‘lead theft’. All roofing components on the project, including 170mm roof insulation, are covered by the Sarnafil extended product warranty. Jordan Dearlove, Director, Volsen Limited said: “It was very important that the new roof retained the integrity of the existing buildings which is one of the many reasons we use the Sarnafil roofing system. It combines aesthetics with ease of installation, reassurance (independently assessed longevity) and its renowned pedigree in both the commercial and home building sectors.” A project that ‘pooled together’ the high specification Sarnafil membrane with the expertise of the team at Volsen. An Olympic combination! For further information on becoming a Sika Roof Assured registered installer please call: 0800 614 821 or email roofassured@uk.sika.com or www.roofassured.co.uk

NEW JANISOL DOOR DELIVERS ALL-ROUND In response to the growing demand for doors with ever larger areas of glass, narrow sight-lines and high levels of insulation, steel systems specialist Schueco Jansen has introduced the Janisol Lift-and-Slide door to provide a complete, cost-effective solution. Available in a wide range of polyester powder-coated colours, this new door allows internal and external spaces to merge together to create a single living environment. The design of the thermally insulated steel profiles enables the door to have a leaf/frame width of only 113.5 mm and a meeting stile just 95 mm wide. Depth measurements are similarly minimal – perimeter frame: 185 mm, leaf: 80 mm – yet the system can accommodate double- or even triple-glazed units up to 57 mm thick delivering Uw

values as low as 0.9W/m2K. Janisol Lift-and-Slide doors are easy to operate by means of stylish handles in either silver anodised aluminium or stainless steel. When the door is closed and locked the rollers are retracted, compressing the seals and allowing the door’s weight to be distributed equally along the length of the threshold, enhancing weather-sealing and removing the weight from the running gear, so the door continues to perform perfectly year after year.

RECRUITMENT

New Year and Lots to Look Forward to Mat Gibson, Recruitment Manager at Chase Taylor Recruitment, gives his predictions… “It’s been a tough couple of years and if you ask anyone in our industry they will probably tell you the same. However, I’ve spoken to Sales Directors, MD’s and owners of businesses that, dare I say it, are optimistic about 2013 and beyond. It’s new products, consumer confidence, the start of new build projects, and a sense of everyone rallying together that has instilled

an air of optimism. I said last month, how exciting the FIT show will be. Its like the strap line says, “everyone is going!” With over 250 leaders of the industry in one room and everyone really buzzing for what promises to be the major shot in the arm we will all welcome. So that’s a definite date for the diary – FIT Show – 16th-18th April 2013 – See me at

Stand 430, Hall 2. I’ll be talking about how companies can find their perfect candidates, tips on retaining staff and maximising current and future employee potential, also helping you find your next move, or maximising your current position and climbing the career ladder. I’m looking forward to an exciting and productive year for all.”
