Get Weiss: Making the Most of Your Chamber Benefits
By Ashley Weiss Membership Engagement Director
I recently returned from Midwest Institute for Organization in Madison, Wisconsin (read more about it on page 8), and during one of my courses, “Delivering Value,” Raymond Towle with the US Chamber of Commerce tasked us with identifying the value we provide to businesses, organizations and individuals within our communities and how to communicate that to current and potential members
One thing that resonated with me during this session was the idea that our team at the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce could be considered an extension of our members’ staff
For example, you want help expanding your marketing reach, so you reach out to us to not only learn about the free and paid opportunities available to you as a member but you ask us to create and distribute that information as well because you don’t have someone on your staff who has the skills or time to do that There we are.
Another example, and this happened recently, a woman from out of town was having a difficult time getting ahold of someone at one of our member restaurants to book a private party, so she called us for help. We connected that individual with the restaurant by physically delivering the message to the manager because we want to see our members succeed
We receive dozens of phone calls, emails and messages each day from people inquiring about our members’ services, products, hours, and more, and we’re there to answer them, as a benefit to our members.
If you want to learn more about how the Chamber is working on your behalf, mark your calendar for Membership 101 on Friday, July 25, from 10-11 a.m. at at 306 Main Ave This educational hour will highlight the active and passive benefits your business or organization receives as part of the Chamber
If you have questions about your membership benefits, reach out to me at 641-357-2159 or ashley@clearlakeiowa.com. I’m always happy to help!
It makes a big difference if you claim your Facebook URL! A custom URL helps people find you more easily and lets us tag your business in posts.

Clear Lake Area Chamber breaks ground on new building
The Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce marked National Travel & Tourism Week with a major milestone: the official groundbreaking of our future Chamber and Welcome Center at 205 Main Ave
Mayor Nelson Crabb proclaimed it National Travel & Tourism Week in Clear Lake, and we marked the occasion with a community celebration that brought together board members, donors, city and county leaders, and supporters The event honored the future of tourism, business, and community life in Clear Lake
The project is expected to be complete by summer 2026 During construction, you can find us one block east at 306 Main Ave in Clear Lake
Why We’re Expanding?
As one of the top travel destinations in the Midwest, Clear Lake continues to grow With nearly 500 Chamber members, more than a million annual visitors, and 17 major events each year, our organization needs space that matches the scale of our service.
Here’s why this expansion is both timely and essential:
A Welcoming Visitor Center
Our current center can only hold a few guests at a time
The new facility will reflect the charm of Clear Lake and provide an open, inviting space that makes a strong first impression.
State-of-the-Art Meeting Space
The new building will include a modern meeting room
equipped with technology to support business training, collaboration, and community meetings
A Fresh, Visible Presence
The new structure will reflect the vibrancy of Clear Lake and provide greater visibility and representation for our local businesses.
Room to Grow
Storage limitations and makeshift workspaces have become our norm This project addresses those constraints, giving our team the tools and space to do more
Improved Event Operations
A dedicated event space and on-site storage will allow us to elevate our current events and create room for new opportunities.
Designed
for Accessibility
The new building will include accessible entrances, wider hallways, an elevator, and modern restrooms ensuring everyone can enjoy the space
This project will nearly triple our current footprint, but the goal goes far beyond square footage It’s about investing in Clear Lake’s economic future and giving our community and visitors a home base that reflects our values and vision.
Fundraising efforts for the project continue Learn more or make a contribution at clearlakeiowacom/future

Weiss completes first at the Institute for Organization Management
Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce
Membership Engagement Director Ashley Weiss recently completed her first year at Institute for Organization Management, a fouryear nonprofit leadership training program at Midwest Institute in Madison, Wisconsin.
“Institute graduates are recognized across the country as leaders in their industries and organizations,” said Raymond P. Towle, IOM, CAE, the US Chamber’s vice president of Institute for Organization Management “These individuals have the knowledge, skills, and dedication necessary to achieve professional and organizational success in the dynamic association and chamber industries.”
Since its commencement in 1921, the Institute program has been educating tens of thousands of association, chamber, and other nonprofit leaders on how to build stronger organizations, better serve their members and become strong business advocates. Institute’s curriculum consists of four weeklong sessions at four different university locations throughout the country. Through a combination of required courses and electives in areas such as leadership, advocacy, marketing, finance, and membership,
Institute participants are able to enhance their own organizational management skills and add new fuel to their organizations, making them run more efficiently and effectively
“I want to thank the Board of Directors for allowing me the opportunity to attend Midwest Institute earlier this month,” Weiss
said “It was an incredible experience to learn from the industry’s leading professionals alongside my peers from chambers and associations across the country. I’m excited to put some of the things I learned into practice within the next year to better our organization and the community.”
Institute for Organization Management is the US Chamber of Commerce’s premier nonprofit professional development program for association and chamber professionals
The US Chamber of Commerce is the world’s largest business organization.

Nelson honored as Clear Lake’s July 4 Grand Marshal th
As fireworks light up the sky this Independence Day in Clear Lake, the community will also shine a welldeserved spotlight on a leader whose dedication has helped shape the heart of the city
The Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce Clear Lake Mayor Nelson Crabb has been selected as the grand marshal for this year’s July 4th parade, a fitting honor for one of the city’s longestserving mayors as he prepares to retire at the end of the year after two decades in office.
The parade, themed “Love of Country, Love of Community,” will highlight his lasting contributions to Clear Lake, where he has served as mayor since 2006
“His support of our community is unwavering,” said Alice Hanley, July 4th Committee chair, who has known Crabb for more than 40 years. “He doesn’t just ‘talk the talk,’ but he ‘walks the walk’
“Even before Nelson was elected mayor, he and his family were very involved with all things Clear Lake He is a great ambassador for our city”
Crabb, who grew up in Franklin, New Jersey a small, diverse zinc mining town in the Appalachian region arrived in Iowa in 1961 to attend Iowa Wesleyan University in Mount Pleasant, where he joined a fraternity and earned a biology degree in 1965.
After graduating college, he returned to New Jersey and received a draft notice. While awaiting word from the US Air Force, Crabb was offered a sixth-grade teaching position by a local superintendent During that time, he got engaged to his now-wife, Darlene, an Iowa native who missed the Midwest, prompting him to apply for teaching jobs in Iowa and Illinois
Crabb arrived in Clear Lake in 1966 to teach fifth grade for a couple years before transitioning to junior high, where he also coached a variety of sports
The couple initially planned to stay in Clear Lake for two years, but they developed a close circle of friends, enjoyed their jobs and appreciated the community, so they stayed and raised their three children.
Crabb earned a master’s degree in school administration and counseling from Iowa State University in 1971 and became the director of student services at the high school before later becoming the North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) director of secondary education He retired in 2002
After some adjunct teaching, traveling and “honey-do” tasks, Crabb turned his attention to local discussions about the lake’s condition.
“I started to think, what would this town be like without the lake?” he recalls “It’d be totally different” When it became clear that then-mayor Kirk Kraft wasn’t going to seek re-election, Crabb saw an opportunity to continue to help The lake quality discussions became a community-wide movement, where everyone from the Association for the Preservation of Clear Lake to the chamber to the county to the cities of Clear Lake and Ventura, worked together, and ultimately, led to a large-scale dredging project aimed at revitalizing the lake
So why run again and again for mayor?
“To see that process through,” he says. “And because it never really ends There’s always more to do”
Crabb has continued to be an advocate and champion for lake restoration and water quality improvements during his tenure as mayor, including the recent Seawall restoration project.
He has also been a driving force behind the redevelopment of the Surf District and the preservation of Main Avenue, ensuring that these iconic areas remain vibrant and welcoming to visitors and residents alike
New housing projects, commercial developments and quality-of-life opportunities have also boomed under Crabb’s leadership
Asked why he’s stepping away now, after two decades in office, he said, “I’m not tired of it, but I feel like it’s time for a new voice”
As he prepares to step down at the end of 2025, Crabb’s advice to his successor is simple: get to know the entire town, listen to everyone, and lead with empathy.
“Having worked alongside Mayor Crabb for nearly two decades, I’ve seen firsthand the dedication, and steady leadership he brings to our community His commitment to public service has not only guided us through times of change and growth but has also fostered a spirit of unity and pride that makes our city stronger,” said Jennifer Larsen, Clear Lake City Clerk “It will be an honor to celebrate him as grand marshal this 4th of July”
The Chamber will formally honor Mayor Crabb as he leads the Independence Day parade on Friday, July 4 The parade, which begins at 10 a.m., is expected to attract thousands of spectators and serve as a memorable capstone to a remarkable civic career
“Twenty years is a long time to be mayor There have been many accomplishments during his tenure and many challenges He has handled them all with integrity, honesty, and grace,” Hanley said “Nelson embodies the parade theme of ‘Love of Country, Love of Community’ We are pleased to honor him as grand marshal of this year’s 4th of July parade It is very welldeserved.”
