BUILDING A BRIGHT FUTURE More than 1 million people visit Clear Lake each year to enjoy fishing and recreating on the lake, music and dancing at the Surf Ballroom & Museum, and community events downtown, like Color the Wind kite festival, July 4th Celebration, Thursdays on Main and Harvest Festival.

And come 2026, there will be a new front door to the community.

The Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce launched a $2 million “Building a Bright Future” capital campaign aimed at funding the expansion and renovation of its facilities last fall. Construction is slated to begin in the spring of 2025 and be completed by the summer of 2026.

John K. and Luise V. Hanson founded Winnebago Industries, Inc., in 1962 and Manufacturers Bank & Trust Company in Forest City in 1967. When they created their foundation in 1970, they established a philanthropic structure that provided a way to give back to organizations in the communities their employees called home.

The foundation, also known as the Hanson Family Foundation, has a special interest in projects that strengthen families through arts and culture, family recreation, and youth development/education.

HANSON FAMILY FOUNDATION The John K. and Luise V. Hanson Foundation has again demonstrated its commitment to enhancing the quality of life in North Central Iowa, contributing $250,000 to the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce’s "Building a Bright Future" capital campaign.

Their donation, the largest single gift to the $2 million campaign so far, highlights the Foundation’s enduring legacy of strengthening communities and supporting impactful projects.

Over the past 50 years, the Foundation has given out more than $64 million in gifts, touching tens of thousands of lives through nearly 1,000 organizations in more than 100 communities.

Beyond its contribution to the Chamber’s building campaign, the Hanson Family Foundation’s philanthropic footprint can be seen across North Iowa. Some notable partnerships have included funding for the Clear Lake Arts Center, Boman Fine Arts Center, Forest City YMCA, Camp Tanglefoot, Clear Lake Yacht Club Sailing School and many others. It also recognizes the value of innovative medical treatment to families and has philanthropic ties to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Some examples of other projects the First Citizens Charitable Foundation has supported in Cerro Gordo County within the past 30 years include the Mason City Aquatic Center, Mason City Family YMCA, MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center, North Iowa Events Center, Newman Catholic School Foundation, Northern Lights Alliance for the Homeless, Habitat for Humanity of North Central Iowa, among many others.

SURF BALLROOM MUSIC EXPERIENCE CENTER: A NEW ERA OF MUSIC HISTORY IN CLEAR LAKE

In addition to the immersive space, the Music Experience Center will offer a visitor center, box office, gift shop, expanded lesson studios, and a versatile conference space with a catering kitchen, capable of hosting up to 100 guests. The center will serve as both an educational hub and a cultural gathering space, further cementing the Surf Ballroom’s role in music education and enrichment.

In Summer 2025, Clear Lake, Iowa, will unveil the highly anticipated Surf Ballroom Music Experience Center. This innovative, state-of-the-art facility, located just steps from the historic Surf Ballroom, promises an immersive and educational journey through music history while celebrating the venue's legacy as one of America’s most iconic music destinations.

The Music Experience Center will feature a 1,800-square-foot immersive space, using cuttingedge virtual projection technology to bring the golden era of big band sound, the rise of rock ‘n’ roll, and the ongoing influence of the Surf Ballroom to life. Visitors will be able to experience the magic of music history in a completely new way, with interactive exhibits and stunning visuals that are similar to popular experiences like “Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience.”

“Those of us at the Surf feel very passionate about a musical moment in time and in history and that is the Day the Music Died, but it’s been our goal to see that the music never dies,” said Jeff Nicholas, Surf Ballroom Board President. “We feel like we’re the caretakers of that moment in time, and it’s now become apparent to push that farther into the future that we must do something different, something bold, something innovative and that is what the MEC is all about.

The Surf Ballroom is already legendary for hosting the final performance of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson on February 2, 1959, an event forever known as “the day the music died.” Since opening its doors in 1933, the Surf has continued to welcome some of the world’s most iconic musicians, making it a must-visit destination for music lovers worldwide.

The Music Experience Center will also be part of the broader Surf District revitalization, which includes a new gateway arch marking the entrance to the district, along with streetscape improvements and enhanced lake access featuring a scenic dock. These upgrades will create a vibrant and welcoming space for both visitors and locals to enjoy.

Thanks to generous support from grants such as the $4.37 million Destination Iowa Grant and a $400,000 Community Attraction and Tourism (CAT) Grant, along with private investments, the Surf District revitalization represents a $35.2 million investment in Clear Lake’s future as a cultural destination. This exciting transformation ensures that the legacy of the Surf Ballroom will continue to thrive for generations to come.

FISHING Clear Lake is a 3684-acre natural glacial lake with exceptional fishing all year long.

The maximum depth is 18’ and there are no motoring restrictions. Amenities at Clear Lake include boat access, fishing jetty, accessible pier, boat rental, picnic areas, beaches, trails, accessible facilities, playgrounds, restrooms, camping, hard surface boat ramps and fish cleaning station.

Species

Popular fish species include bigmouth buffalo, black crappie, bluegill, channel catfish, common carp, flathead catfish, green sunfish, largemouth bass, muskellunge, northern pike, pumpkinseed, walleye, white bass, white crappie, white sucker, yellow bass and yellow perch.

Fishing Forecast

Walleye angling has been excellent the past few seasons. There are good numbers of 15-17 inch Walleye for anglers to harvest.

The Yellow Bass population has improved some, but still is much lower than the fishery supported a decade or so ago. The size quality of Yellow Bass is very good.

Crappie are doing well in Clear Lake.

Anglers consistently catch crappie during all seasons or angling. Muskellunge angling remains excellent. Channel Catfish is another species worth targeting on Clear Lake.

Fishing Regulations

Clear Lake has a protected slot limit on Walleye. All fish 17-22 inches must be immediately released unharmed. For more regulations, visit iowadnr.gov/fishing or pick up a fishing regulations brochure at the Visitor Center or DNR office.

Launched in May 2024 during National Travel & Tourism Week, the Clear Lake History Ride invites you on a 14-mile self-guided journey around Clear Lake, where you'll explore a blend of iconic landmarks, historical sites, and gorgeous landscapes.

Perfect for history lovers or those just looking for a fun way to explore, this ride offers something for everyone.

The route includes stops at three National Historic Sites and one National Historic Landmark. Each stop provides fascinating insights into Clear Lake’s past, from the construction of the Seawall to the music legends that graced the Surf Ballroom. Plus, you’ll learn why Clear Lake has aerators and how the town’s history has shaped its landscape.

Some of the key stops include: • Clear Lake City Park – Start your ride with scenic views and a look at the park's historical significance.

Here, you’ll learn about its construction and its vital role in protecting the lakefront.

Along the way, you’ll also encounter stops like Rishbomporosni Lodge Sign, Lekwa Marsh, and Ventura Jetty, each with its own story to tell. You’ll even discover the reason behind the installation of Clear Lake’s aerators and the history behind the preservation of local landmarks.

At the top of the park stands the open-air gazebo, a gathering place since 1919. This historic structure, along with surrounding markers, honors John Kopecky, a key figure in Clear Lake’s musical heritage. Kopecky, who mentored Meredith Willson and founded the North Iowa Band Festival in Clear Lake, conducted concerts from this very spot for many years. His legacy is celebrated on historical markers in the gazebo area, where you can learn more about his contributions to the local music scene.

The small gazebo made for cramped quarters, so Municipal Band Director Ludvig Wangberg was the major force behind the construction of the current bandshell. Dedicated on June 19, 1955, the bandshell was designed by Edward Novak of Decorah, and was meant to resemble a sail. The Lakeview Community Room was added to the rear of the bandshell in 1999. In July 2001, the band shell was renamed in honor of Wangberg (1923-2017), who in addition to directing the Municipal Band for 55 years taught music at Clear Lake High School, directed the Drum and Bugle Corps and choirs at Zion Lutheran and Galilean Lutheran.

Along with the bandshell updates, the historic merry-go-round, a favorite of many for decades, has been carefully restored, preserving a piece of City Park’s history for future generations to enjoy. The park’s playgrounds, including the nautical inspired playset, offer a fun place for children to explore, while the surrounding trees and open spaces make it an ideal spot for picnics, walks, and outdoor events.
