KOREANS AND KOREA TOWNS IN THE UNITED STATES (KWANG J. KIM AND SHIN KIM) There are approximately 1.5 million Korean Americans in the United States. Most of them are the post-1965 immigrants from South Korea and their American-born children. Life experience of the two types of Korean Americans may be discussed in terms of a historical review of Korea towns in major American cities.

Thursday, June 13 KOREAN HISTORICAL MUSEUM (DR. TONY HAHM, MUSEUM DIRECTOR) Dr. Hahm will give a tour of the museum in Wheeling which includes historial photos and cultural items.

Wednesday, June 12

Korea - June 10-13 (section 001) Monday, June 10 FROM THE THREE KINGDOMS THROUGH COLONIZATION AND DIVISION TOWARD AN UNCERTAIN FUTURE (GARY MIDKIFF) The Korean nation, tracing from the Gija Joseon Dynasty, has stood between China and Japan for over 3,200 years, sometimes controlled by one or the other, but always fiercely independent from either. The Korean War severed the country and put the North and the South onto very different paths. The divergence of those paths has profound impact on current world affairs and the crafting of plans for a more peaceful international future. We will learn about Korean culture and accomplishments and identify alternative Korean futures.

MAJOR FACTORS THAT SHAPED KOREAN HISTORY (DR. BONNIE B.C. OH) Koreans pride themselves in having over 2,000 years of history from the dawn of the historical period and 5,000 years including the prehistoric period. But because of its geopolitical location and size, especially after the demise of the Kingdom of Koguryo, it has endured nearly 1,000 invasions, large and small and long and short. This presentation will examine the major factors that shaped Korean history.

AMERICAN MILITARY SERVICE IN POST-WAR KOREA, AND DMZ FIGHTING 1960s (MICHAEL ZIMMERMAN) The nature of American military service in Korea near the Demilitarized Zone will be our focus. We will also discuss the DMZ War, the combat acceleration linked with South Korea sending forces to assist America in defending South Vietnam. North Korea exploited that development and America’s preoccupation with Southeast Asia. North Korean Special Forces inflicted hundreds of allied casualties and attempted to overthrow the Republic of Korea government. This military campaign, in which ROK and U.S. forces were victorious in defensive campaigning, overlapped the Tet Offensive in Vietnam.

THE DIVISION OF KOREA (DR. BONNIE B.C. OH) This presentation will discuss the three issues related to the division of the Korean peninsula: first, the background of the division of the Korean peninsula on August 14, 1945, one day before the end of the Pacific War in East Asia; second, how a temporary demarcation line became permanent. And third, what were the immediate and long-term consequences of the division in Korea and for the rest of East Asia and the world. FILM – THE HOST (JOHN KUPETZ) Korean filmmakers have made significant contributions to the horror genre, and we’ll screen and discuss a monster film that set South Korean box office records in 2006. The Host is a complex, imaginative and uncompromising film that uses its monster to explore uneasy truths. Director and writer Bong Joonho starts with the American military presence. From there his film explores uneasy truths about the official lies the nation’s government will tell, its journalists will enable and its people will accept. Bong Joon-ho’s monster in The Host is a creative marvel, and his film has been called a thriller, a political satire, a family comedy—and a masterpiece. 9171 CDIS 25-001 Southlake Campus Monday-Thursday, June 10-13 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. $189 Room V336-340 Marcinkovich

Quest Tuesday, July 16 MAKING SENSE OF MY PERSONAL JOURNEY (GARY MIDKIFF) “I entered Thornridge High School in Dolton, Illinois in September of 1960, graduated from the University of Chicago in June 1968 and was drafted in November 1969. That decade has always been the benchmark for the rest of my life―my political orientation, my social awareness and my cultural attitudes,” Midkiff says. “I now know how very little I knew then. Looking back at those ten years of events as an adult has given me increasing appreciation of the upheavals my country went through and how we grew stronger. We will look at events as I recall them and as I now understand them, although we may never fully understand the lyrics of The Kingsmen’s 1963 hit Louie, Louie.

The ‘60s, July 15-18 (section 003) Monday, July 15 VIETNAM REVISITED: ALTERNATIVE HISTORY, OPTIONAL US STRATEGIES, WHAT IF? (MICHAEL ZIMMERMAN) We will summarize the developments and resolution of America’s engagement in the Vietnam War and then consider alternative U.S. strategies discussed at the time or considered in hindsight and how various options might have worked. It is ironic that with the American-negotiated withdrawal soon perceived as a defeat, with a terrible price paid by its Republic of Vietnam ally, the overall Cold War still was a victory for the U.S. and relations between Vietnam and America have become positive. What do we make of the Vietnam War decades later? SWITCHING CHANNELS: WHAT 1960s SITCOMS TOLD US ABOUT SOCIETY (JOHN TENUTO) From the rural Andy Griffith Show to the more urban Dick Van Dyke Show, from the super powered women of I Dream of Jeannie and Bewitched, to the antics of Mr. Ed and Gilligan’s Island, the television situation comedies of the 1960s reflected the changes going on in real American society at the time. Join sociology professor John Tenuto for a fun and informational trip back to the 1960s to discuss how gender, race, economics and changing technology were represented (and perhaps influenced by) 1960s sitcoms. FOUR AT THE FOREFRONT OF CHANGE (SARA STEPHENS) If you want to know an era, look at its literature. This class will explore the contributions of four writers during the sizzling ‘60s: Alex Hayley, Malcolm X, Betty Friedan and Sylvia Plath. Hayley wrote the award-winning TV series Roots and collaborated with Malcolm X on The Autobiography of Malcolm X, and their writings will provide insights into the Civil Rights era. Friedan, author of the ground-breaking book, The Feminine Mystique and Sylvia Plath, poet and author of The Bell Jar, illuminated events of the Women’s Liberation Movement. Their lives, writings and contributions to social change will be addressed in detail.

Wednesday, July 17 CHICAGO ARCHITECTURE IN THE 60s (EVELYN WILWERDING) The 1960s were an interesting period in architecture, worldwide and in Chicago. It was the beginning of large scale mass produced materials, assimilation of the modernist movement (which in Chicago was the fascination with the glass and steel skyscraper of Mies van der Rohe) and an interest in the space age which also became translated in architecture. The architecture and design of the 1960s plays a pivotal role in bringing about contemporary architecture.

THE BRITISH ARE COMING! THE BRITISH INVASION IN 1960s AMERICAN ROCK MUSIC (LAUREL KAISER) 1959 – The Day the Music Died marked a change from the exciting, raw, blues-influenced early rock and roll to the saccharine sounds of the likes of Frankie Avalon, Fabian and other pop crooners. But the rebellious tone and image of U.S. rock and roll and blues musicians were becoming popular with British youth as early as the late 1950s. While early commercial attempts to replicate American rock and roll mostly failed, the jazz inspired skiffle craze with its “do it yourself ” attitude was the starting point of several British Billboard singles. When these British rock artists crossed the ocean, American teenagers were ready for a new kind of rock. The Beatles and the Rolling Stones invaded a welcoming American youth, and rock music took off in two exciting new directions. What made this music so special? How did our youth equally embrace the mopheads in classy tuxedos and the bad boys who sang of sex, drugs and rock and roll? It will be an exciting ride!

Thursday, July 18 TWO MEN, TWO DREAMS, TWO MURDERS (BARRY BRADFORD) JFK and Medgar Evers could not have lived in more different worlds―one a wealthy Bostonian, the other a working man from Mississippi. Yet their dreams were similar―civil rights for all. And each was murdered. In these spellbinding multimedia presentations, nationally acclaimed storyteller and historian Barry Bradford weaves together their stories as Quest presents the 1960s. FILM – THE GRADUATE (JOHN KUPETZ) Almost universally misunderstood when it made a fortune on its release in 1967, The Graduate had clueless college graduates seeing themselves in Dustin Hoffman’s Benjamin Braddock. Of course, they believed they were misunderstood, innocent, sensitive and alienated. We’ll screen and discuss Mike Nichols’ film and determine whether true love triumphs over greed and capitalism or whether Nichols was providing a mirror to show us the American dream in all its narcissistic horror. Try to remember this is a comedy whose darkest joke may be on the viewers who thought it had a happy ending. Joltin’ Joe has left and gone away indeed, Mrs. Robinson. And who can blame him? 9172 CDIS 25-002 Monday-Thursday, July 15-18 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. $189 Room V336-340
