The CLC Education charter is a powerful document underpinned by the College Vision and values of Justice, Love, Compassion and Hope.

The Education Charter at Catholic Ladies’ College emphasises high expectations, personal growth and community engagement. Students are encouraged to set challenging goals, take risks in their learning, and celebrate various forms of excellence, including academic achievements and personal development

The Education Charter highlights for students, the importance of understanding one's role in creating a better world, building positive relationships, and being responsible digital citizens. It fosters a supportive environment where students can explore, make mistakes and persevere, preparing them to be adaptable and globally minded individuals.

Year 9 is an exciting time of growth and exploration. At this stage of your learning journey, you will be offered a diverse and dynamic range of subjects and learning experiences. With this comes the opportunity—and the responsibility—to make informed choices about what you will study.

You are encouraged to think carefully about your strengths, interests, and areas you may wish to explore further. Don’t base your decisions solely on what your friends are choosing—you may find yourself in a subject that doesn’t suit you. Instead, be curious and open-minded. Taking some risks and trying something new is a valuable part of learning.

Year 9 students are supported to develop greater independence as learners. In our learning environment, we encourage you to engage critically with the world, take on challenges and grow in confidence as a responsible and reflective student.

Please note that elective choices are used to construct the school timetable. As a result, changes cannot be made once selections are finalised. While every effort will be made to place you in your preferred subjects, sometimes this may not be possible. If this occurs, we will work with you to find a suitable alternative.

This Course Guide is just the beginning. Speak with your teachers, your Year Level Coordinator, or other staff members if you have any questions. Take the time to explore your options and prepare well for the year ahead.

FUTURE PLANNING

What type of future do I control? How do I get there?

These are some of the big questions that the Year 9s are exposed to. With our University and TAFE partnerships, Year 9s start to think about what learning looks like after Year 12 and what types of careers these pathways can lead you to.

Students engage in investigations into their personal brand and further develop their sense of self and their place in the world. There is a focus on practical skills to help Year 9 learn about moving into young adulthood such as applying for jobs, how to answer questions in a job interview, managing their time, being independent in the City of Melbourne, managing their finances and communication skills.

CHOICE, INNOVATION, LEADERSHIP AND CREATIVITY

Students will have choice in many of the learning projects, to reflect their interests and ideas. We aim to excite our young learners in authentic, real world projects though a series of engaging activities and hands on learning. With a focus on problem solving and generating solutions, the Year 9s complete projects which reflect the design thinking process and encourages them to be innovative in their ideas. Student voice is integral to the program and students work along side staff to accomplish their projects and work in groups with peers to further develop their team work and leadership skills.

EXAMPLES OF PROJECTS

• Entrepreneurship

• STEM and Design Thinking Challenges

Learning Program

Students in Year 9 will study a combination of compulsory and elective subjects.

In addition to these subjects, students will choose two elective units per semester from the range of subject areas below right.

Students are strongly encouraged to choose a broad range of electives; ie. from at least three curriculum areas. This will enhance the development of skills and capabilities required in the Senior study program. These electives will provide students with choice and responsibility for their own learning.
