Business & Professional Training

We offer a variety of study programmes all year round in popular subjects. All courses provide students with the opportunity to acquire academic and professional qualifications.

UK University Placement Service

BBSI University Foundation and Pre-Masters courses include a University Placement Service to universities in the UK. Provided students obtain the necessary grades, they are assured of a conditional university offer before they finish their course.

Social & Activity Programme

BBSI offers a selection of leisure, sports and social activities, both during the day and in the evenings. In planning such activities, the School takes account of the cultural differences between life in England and in students’ home countries. In satisfying this requirement, staff consider, among other factors, cultural background, lifestyles, age and religious faith. Activities include: * cultural excursions * karaoke pub nights

* ice-skating * museum visits

* sporting events * leaving parties

BBSI also offers regular opportunities for students to have additional access to teachers and other native speakers, through the following: * film club afternoons * football tournaments * skills workshops * lectures on topics of cultural interest * weekly coffee & conversation club

For activities that incur entry fees and transportation costs, a charge will be made. Other events and activities may be free of charge. A detailed BBSI social programme, including fees, is published monthly in advance on the BBSI website at www.bbsi.co.uk, whilst details are regularly made available to students in the School.

Accommodation & Welfare While you study in Bournemouth, it is important that you are comfortable in your domestic environment and that you mix with as many native speakers of English as possible and absorb the local culture in your everyday activities. BBSI therefore offers various accommodation options to suit your personal requirements, including homestay, hotel and guest house accommodation and residential facilities.

Accommodation

A popular tourist resort, Bournemouth offers a wide choice of accommodation. BBSI selects only quality accommodation that complies with AccreditationUK Guidelines.

Standard Homestay

The standard homestay option provides a single study/bedroom which is available on a part-board basis (breakfast and evening meal Monday-Friday and all meals at weekends), on a Bed & Breakfast basis, or on a self-catering basis. Many rooms have internet. All homestays are inspected regularly to ensure that high standards of comfort, cleanliness, safety and catering are met and maintained.

Executive Homestay

The executive homestay option provides a more luxurious standard of study/bedroom with en-suite or private bathroom and internet connection. Executive homestay is available on a part-board basis (breakfast and evening meal Monday-Friday and all meals at weekends), on a Bed & Breakfast basis, or on a self-catering basis. All homestays are inspected regularly to ensure that high standards of comfort, cleanliness, safety and catering are met and maintained.

Residential

BBSI organises both student-style self-catering residential stays and hotel-style residential stays all year round. Hotel-style residences can be booked on a room-only or Bed & Breakfast basis. Dinner can also be booked as an option. Fees vary according to the location and room-type, and are published on the BBSI website. Residential accommodation is not available to students under 18.

Welfare Facilities

BBSI staff have an understanding of international students and we recognise that individuals have widely different welfare and cultural needs. Our policy is to provide and maintain a safe and healthy environment for study. Welfare staff are on hand throughout normal School opening hours and emergency staff are contactable at weekends and overnight.

The British Council provides a personal safety guide for international students. This information is available at www.educationuk.org.

If you have enrolled on a course at BBSI or are thinking of doing so, you will probably have many questions. The UKCISA website, at www.ukcisa.org.uk, provides very helpful advice to students.

Academic Summary Teaching Methodology

BBSI’s aim is to develop students’ language within real-life contexts. In our general English courses, the emphasis is on communication across all 4 skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening). This is also true in specialised courses, where students learn about key concepts and theories within their subject through the medium of English. Our students learn the terms, study skills and communication skills that will help them, either in their career or in higher education. Those who choose to progress to university have the advantage of being taught academic language skills, as well as specific subject knowledge.

Academic Staff

The emphasis at BBSI is on high-quality professional teaching. We currently employ over 25 full-time teachers, as well as part-time teachers and freelance specialists. School policy is to recruit experienced individuals with a first degree, plus an ELT teaching certificate or diploma and appropriate experience, in accordance with the British Council accreditation scheme, AccreditationUK. Specialist teachers normally have appropriate professional qualifications and experience in their respective fields, plus an ELT teaching qualification.

Academic Progress Monitoring & Reporting

Students take an entry test on arrival at BBSI and are then placed in appropriate classes. During their course, students are set a range of course work to assess their progress and understanding, including essays, reports, meeting role-plays, spread-sheets, presentations and academic assignments. We ensure high academic standards and the allocation of an appropriate final grade on all BBSI certification. Student tutorials are an important part of the feedback process, so students are aware of the progress they are making, and how best to improve.

Academic Assessment

Academic achievement is assessed by means of continuous assessment.

Academic Timetables

Lessons are time-tabled Monday to Friday, in sessions of 2, forty-five minute lessons, within the study periods detailed in the table opposite. Students receive a personal timetable on arrival at BBSI, and class times are published weekly within the School.

BBSI Professional & Accrediting Bodies Accredited by the

BRITISH COUNCIL

for the teaching of English

The British Council, in partnership with English UK, forms a national accrediting body, Accreditation UK, for accredited schools, colleges and universities that provide courses in English as a foreign language. British Council and English UK inspectors carry out inspections every 4 years of those recognised institutions that provide English language training of high quality. BBSI is accredited by the British Council for the teaching of English.

NCFE is recognised as an Awarding Organisation by the qualification regulators for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The regulators are the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) in England, the Welsh Government and the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment in Northern Ireland. NCFE accreditation gives assurance that the content of a training course is of a high standard and meets the rigorous quality assurance requirements of a national awarding organisation. BBSI is a holder of the NCFE Investing in Quality (IIQ) licence. The IIQ is designed to give formal recognition to our bespoke education and training provision, which is regarded by Ofqual to be ‘non-regulated’ provision and therefore not included in the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) or National Qualifications Framework (NQF).

The requirements specified in the National Quality Assurance ISO 9001 Standard are aimed primarily at achieving customer satisfaction. Management-system certification stimulates a climate of confidence in the quality-management procedures and practices that institutions apply in support of the services they provide. The ISO registration mark is an indication that BBSI meets the needs and expectations of its students in providing high quality and good value.

University of Cambridge ESOL examinations are the World’s leading range of certificates for learners of English. BBSI is a Registered Test Centre for the following examinations administered by the Cambridge ESOL Examinations Board: BEC, ICFE, ILEC. Each year Cambridge ESOL examinations are taken by over 2 million people, in 130 different countries. The examinations are well known for their high-quality assessment of real English, as used in everyday work, study and leisure situations. ESOL qualifications are widely recognised by employers and educational institutions worldwide.

The Chartered Management Institute (CMI) promotes the art and science of management. CMI has a Royal Charter and is a nationally accredited organisation responsible for establishing standards of excellence in management and recognising that excellence through the award of professional qualifications. Aviation English Training & Testing BBSI offers flexibly structured Aviation English training in the UK for pilots and ATCOs. Our courses are adapted to meet the guidelines in the ICAO English-language-proficiency descriptors and can be structured to meet the precise requirements of individual sponsors. Course duration can be between 2 and 24 weeks, depending on the English-language entry level of participants and the precise requirements of respective aviation sponsors.

Course Content & Structure General English. The general-English language elements of our training aim to enhance general confidence in all 4 language skills through extensive practice. Aviation English. Training in Aviation English targets aviation language and development of English communication skills in context, depending on the precise specialisation of participants. We incorporate the necessary elements of pronunciation, structure, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension and interaction, in addition to standard, non-standard and unusual phraseology, terminology and vocabulary. Moreover, we focus particularly on case studies, where the use of incorrect or non-routine language has either led to aviation disasters, or has exacerbated situations that might easily have been resolved safely through effective communication. Practice Activities. Practice activities include role-play and simulations; aircraft emergencies; bomb threat/alert/scare and contingency actions; contingency actions (general); special requests; case studies of actual incident/occurrence reports (all found to be attributed to poor English comprehension), combined with inappropriate non-standard radio phraseology; use of authentic and quasi-authentic audio, such as ATIS; and both standard and non-standard operational situations.

Specialised Content. Specialist aviation content includes a full inventory of events, domains and sub-domains that characterise the day-to-day communications of air traffic controllers and pilots. These events and domains represent air traffic control situations, routine and non-routine, in which all aviators must be competent, and each requires familiarity with many lexical domains for which there are associated words. Functionality. The aim is to provide trainees with the opportunity to function, regardless of individual skills levels, at the standard of ICAO Level 4. Emphasis is placed on speaking and listening skills, with continual practice in context, utilising authentic audio training facilities such as ATIS broadcasts, as well as audio examples of aircraft emergencies, and incident reports relating to non-routine radio phraseology and unusual aviation-related requests and incidents. Assessment & Certification

BBSI is a British Council accredited English-language training centre and as such is accepted by the UK Civil Aviation Authority to conduct the language assessment for the purposes of obtaining certification for the ICAO aviation English language proficiency requirements for ICAO Levels 4 (Operational), through to Level 6 (Expert). JAR-FCL requirements require an impartial assessment process; the language assessment should be independent of the language training. To ensure this requirement BBSI uses the services of an independent company, Global Aviation Language Ltd (GAL) using what is known as the ‘Alpha Tango’ test to conduct the assessment. The assessment may either be conducted either on a face-to-face basis, with an assessor, or alternatively the applicant may conduct a computer-based assessment. Both assessments take approximately 45 minutes to complete and are digitally recorded and retained for the period of the level awarded, ie 3 years for ICAO Level 4, or 5 years for ICAO Level 5. The computer-based method of assessment may be conducted remotely; however, the assessment must be invigilated and ID checks made by a person acceptable both to BBSI and GAL. Applicants holding aircrew licenses issued by countries outside the UK should ensure that the UK language proficiency certification is acceptable to their respective National Aviation Authority. A sample of the computer on-Line assessment is available on request from BBSI.

The BBSI Testing Solution The main features of the BBSI testing solution are as follows:

* computer-based examination and assessment of the listening and speaking skills of applicants, utilising simulated interactions, rich multimedia and animations * applicants are prompted to answer questions by both visual cues and by voice; the test session is then recorded and stored on a secure, dedicated server * assessment is normally carried out by our competent staff; however, arrangements can be made be clients to utilise staff appointed or nominated by their respective national aviation authorities

62

www.bbsi.co.uk

* the test facilities accurately assess all 6 of the ICAO English-language proficiency levels * subject to JAA requirements, the test is delivered in a controlled examination environment * test results are made available to both the applicant and the respective national aviation authority * we have a robust and fair appeal system

BBSI Service. BBSI language proficiency testing services include the following:

* customer helpdesk * training for testing administrators * full support for external assessors * user-friendly test retrieval & assessment

* training for assessors * server hosting & archiving * regular updating of questions & testing database * full assessment documentation provided for each test

Test Delivery Options The 3 main options for testing are briefly described below. However, BBSI would be pleased to discuss with potential clients other delivery solutions to match specific or individual needs.

Option 1. Full testing service, including test delivery and assessment at an examination centre organised by BBSI in a location that is acceptable to the client.

Option 2. BBSI will provide a customer helpdesk; on-line test delivery; test assessment and delivery of results; server hosting and archiving; and training for invigilators. The client organisation would be expected to provide examination-centre facilities and the necessary test invigilators.

Option 3. BBSI will provide a customer helpdesk, on-line test delivery, test retrieval by assessors and specific on-line documentation for assessment purposes, server hosting and archiving, training for assessors and invigilators. Sponsor clients would be expected to provide examination facilities, invigilators and assessors.

BBSI can assist organisations to assess the magnitude and likely reasons for shortfalls in performance, and recommend strategies for improvement that might involve innovative, creative and less costly solutions than merely to increase the training budget.

BBSI provides consultancy services to organisations seeking to ensure that their training expenditure addresses shortfalls in the performance of their respective business, industry or public-sector organisation. Competency & Skills Management. An organisation’s

core competencies form the foundation for its strengths. BBSI will assist clients to determine, manage and develop core and specific competencies and skills at all levels to improve overall performance in key areas.

BBSI will assess the need for custom-designed learning environments and creative training solutions to provide clients with the overall performance results they require. Improvements develop exponentially over time, with dramatic results being achieved by involving the client in the design process. Performance Measurement. Once BBSI has assisted clients to establish effective training and performance systems, ongoing performance measurement by our specialist trainers and consultants ensures that an organisation is achieving the performance improvements it expects and provides clients with the information necessary to fine-tune the ongoing process of development.
