‘Child protection system in crisis’ FEVER REPORTER

ITH only 19% of child abuse cases reported to social servi­ ces and referred to the police, and eight percent in return, South Afri­ ca’s child protection system has failed our children, says World Vision South Africa.

World Vision also called for violence against SA children to be declared a “national disaster”.

Child rapists sentenced ON August 16, the Scottburgh Regional Court convicted and sentenced a 31-year-old man to life imprisonment for rape and nine months for assault.

Police spokesperson LieutenantColonel Zandra Wiid said in September 28, 2014 two children from the Bombo area near Msinsini were assaulted and raped by a person known to them.

“The man assaulted the 14-yearold boy with a bottle to his head and raped the 13-year-old girl,” said Wiid.

She said the incident was reported and police arrested the suspect.

In another case, a 50-year-old man was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for raping a five-yearold child at KwaQoloqolo.

The man is believed to have lured the victim to his house and raped her on March 1, 2015.

Both cases were investigated by Shaun Pillay of the Port Shepstone Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.

World Vision said figures derived from the Child Abuse Tracking Study 2017 reveal that an “alarming” rate of women and children do not receive therapy after abuse and many perpe­ traters remain at large.

World Vision SA national director, Paula Barnard said stories revealed by the study of cases thrown out due to a lack of evidence were “horrific and un­ acceptable”.

“We’re dealing with a fragmented,

inadequate system which is failing our children daily. Perpetrators aren’t bought to justice and children don’t re­ ceive crucial therapeutic and support services that are vital to their recovery and long­term well­being.”

Barnard said this led to a vicious cy­ cle of abuse.

“It is imperative that South Africans can rely on our child protection system, and it starts with effective reporting and support,” she said.

Port Shepstone SAPS Lieutenant Colonel Zandra Wiid said all cases re­ ported to local SAPS were referred to social workers as part of police proce­ dure.

She said reasons for cases being thrown out of court included children being too young to testify, late report­ ing and false reporting.

“If it is domestic related, inter­famil­ iarly, case, the victim is removed to the place of safety if suspect cannot be lo­

cated immediately until the suspect is arrested. At least two weeks before she is to testify in court, she is prepared for such by the court preparation officer,” said Wiid “Next the suspect’s buccal swabs are taken and sent for DNA. The victim then receives counselling, medication and treatment before she is referred to the case manager for interview to see if she can make a credible witness in court,” she said.

High­speed car chase in Murchison, car seized, suspects flee A HIGH speed police chase just before midday on Tuesday resulted in the recovery of a stolen vehicle in Murchison.

SAPS spokesperson LieutenantColonel Zandra Wiid said police received information about a vehicle which had four occupants and was travelling along the back roads at Oribi flats near Murchison.

“Port Shepstone K9, Ezinqoleni Police and Harding responded soon and the vehicle was spotted on the road,” said Wiid. They tried to stop the vehicle but the driver speed off. She said during the chase police, established that the vehicle was reported stolen in Cato Manor near Durban in July this year.

“While the car was still in motion one of the passengers jumped out of the rear, waving a firearm and started running,” she said.

It is alleged that when the vehicle approached Murchison Taxi Rank all suspects left the car and fled on foot. A police helicopter was called to assist in the search for the fleeing suspects but they were not found.

The car was impounded at the SAPS pound and various items including clothing, coins, food, cigarettes, a bolt cutter, a knife, cell phones and pepper spray. The investigation is continuing.

Police arrest suspected burglars FOUR suspected burglars, aged between 32 and 36, were arrested last Friday in Umzinto for being in possession of stolen property.

Scottburgh SAPS and Umzinto Crime Intelligence acted on information about a VW Polo with a Durban registration that was allegedly transporting stolen property from the lower South Coast to Durban.

Police spokesman Captain Vincent Pandarum said Detective Sergeant

Blessing Ngcobo, Detective-Constables Bonginkosi Chiliza and Charity Radebe intercepted the vehicle near Beneva School in Malangeni.

“There were allegedly four occupants in the VW Polo and a large quantity of property that they were unable to give a reasonable account for,” said Pandarum.

Among the items found in the vehicle and seized by police as exhibits were a big-screen plasma TV, cutlery,

remote controls, binoculars, frozen food, shoes, clothing, luggage bags, cellphones, bedding, an electric fryer, a wallet and a pellet gun.

Upon investigating, police established that suspects were linked to three burglaries that occurred a night before in Ridge Road and Marine Drive in Bazley. The suspects appeared in Mzinto Magistrate’s Court this week and will remain in custody for further investigation. - Supplied.

“These cars are big and they consume over R9 000 each a month worth of fuel, let alone the drivers and bodyguards that were just hired by the mayor [and] who are being paid over R16 000 each,” said Ngcobo.

Another councillor, who did not want to be named, said council did not approve another vehicle but Chiliza used his power and authority.

The source said even the municipal manager and general manager had no idea that the mayor using both vehicles.

“The mayor just gives instructions, he does not consult with anyone,” said the source.

Another informant from within the municipality told the Fever that there is another Toyota Fortuner that will be on the road soon that will be bought for the mayor.

A new Fortuner sells for R438 000. Ugu spokesman France Zama confirmed that the mayor is using two cars and this is the first time this is happening.

He said the mayor has to be provided with two vehicles and extra bodyguards, but would not say what threats might compromise the mayor’s safety.

HE recent Ugu District Municipality good governance portfolio committee meeting got heated when councillors allegedly demanded answers from municipality manager DD Naidoo on how he authorised two vehicles to be used by mayor Cllr Mondli Chiliza at the same time.

The cars, a Toyota Fortuner 2.8 and a Toyota Prado 3.0, are used by the mayor and his bodyguards. An insider said Naidoo asked to discuss the matter with portfolio committee chair Nomfundo Zwane privately before it is tabled before council.

A source inside the municipality revealed that the Prado was bought for the late Ugu mayor Tolomane Myayiza who died in December, and the Fortuner was for use by Chiliza, who was deputy mayor at the time.

“For the first time in this municipality the mayor has to be escorted by two vehicles and the big question is why,” asked the source.

UIF woes finally resolved

OMEGA MOAGI >>omega.moagi@media24.com A HIBBERDENE man’s three­year UIF claim problems have finally ended after intervention from the South Coast Fever.

Unemployed, yet unable to claim for UIF because he was allegedly “still earning a salary” with a compa­ ny he stopped working at three years ago, father of three, Wonderboy Cele, said he never anticipated that his nine­day tenure with the company would cause so much havoc in his life.

“A friend of mine told me to apply at their offices while they were still in Marburg and because I had a security qualification I decided to give it a try.”

Cele said soon after joining the company he real­ ised he would not be able to sustain himself on the salary.

“I was going to earn R2000 a month and with this I had to pay rent for my room in Gamalakhe, have transport money to work every day, buy food and oth­ er essentials and send money home for my children,” he said.

Cele then decided to resign, a decision he said, his employers did not contest.

Over the years Cele survived on odd jobs closer to home. With his last contract ending in January Cele decided to go claim UIF and was shocked to discover that he was still registered and “earning a salary” from the company.

When the Fever contacted the Department of La­ bour, Phumzile Mgojo said she would look into the matter and returned to the Fever saying Cele was in fact registered as working for two companies at the same time in the labour system, however, the matter had been resolved.

“According to our system there were two compa­ nies whose time frames for him [Cele] overlapped. We contacted the one company and they sent written confirmation that he no longer worked there,” said Mgojo, adding that Cele could reapply for UIF. At the time of going to press Cele told Fever he was going to reapply for UIF.

GU District Municipality Mayor Mondli Chiliza has asked the South Coast Ratepayers’ Association to work with the municipality to deal with the water crisis that is gripping the district.

He was speaking at a consultative meeting at Desroches Hotel in Margate last Thursday.

He also spoke about the municipality’s infrastructure upgrade plans.

Chiliza said R211 million has been spent on installing a pipeline from Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre in Gamalakhe to Margate “This pipeline will supply water to KwaNositha, Margate Extension 3 and Ramsgate. The project will be completed in December,” said Chiliza.

He said the municipality acknowledges the age-

ing infrastructure, which is why R10 million has been allocated for the replacement of pipes in Port Edward, and the project will be finished in June 2018.

“This will reduce water loss and the bursting of pipes in the area as we are aware that some of the pipes are old.”

Municipal manager DD Naidoo told ratepayers to use the proper channels when addressing issues with the municipality, not the media.

“We only have one platform we use to listen and respond to your queries. The Ugu Municipality Talk page on Facebook was created for us to be in contact with you as citizens of Ugu,” said Naidoo.

Ratepayers’ Association’s Professor Oliver Ransome said due to the first priorities of the national development plan the municipality should also use skilled engineers who are willing to volunteer in dealing with the water crisis.

Ramaphosa, ANC and SA deputy president, seeks to succeed Zuma as ANC president after the party’s elective conference in December.

Some party insiders have come out and said Zuma did this to prevent Ramaphosa from campaigning on the South Coast.

ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) member Bheki Cele had to address the forum while Ramaphosa was tied up with Zuma in San Lameer.

Ramaphosa’s visit followed that of Minister of Department of Water and Sanitation, Nomvula Mokonyane on Sunday in Uvongo Town Hall.

Mokonyane, a Zuma ally, addressed another cadre’s forum and openly campaigned for Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma to succeed Zuma as ANC president. The South Coast is vital to both camps as it is the second biggest in the province, after eThekwini.

In his address Cele warned that the party was in danger of losing the 2019 general elections if it did not change its current ways and do things according to its tradition.

He said he was not backing anyone, he was only supporting the tradition and culture of the party, which allows the deputy to take over from the president once the term has ended.

He also said those who stole from government should be brought to book.

In Uvongo a day before, Mokonyane said there was no tradition in the ANC that says there shall be automatic succession to positions.

“The Constitution says there shall be nominations for the top six positions. It does not say that when a position becomes vacant the next in line takes over. There is no step ladder,” said Mokonyane.

She also said the party has always believed in women leaders regardless of who they were married to.

“Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has worked hard for this country and the continent. She is a powerful woman who deserves to serve this country.”

The Lower South Coast region was stripped of its powers by the ANC’s Provincial Executive Committee last month. Representatives from the region met with the party’s national working committee on Monday to present the region’s case.

ANC regional secretary Mzwandile Mkhwanazi said they will invite Ramaphosa again and he will speak.

The Swiss facilitators, Michal and Alex Gablinger, held a series of workshops on a new international programme that the school is to adopt - Mathis - and donated some academic resources for pupils.

Foundation phrase HOD Sister Staff Dlamini said it was an honour to host the facilitators as the school would benefit greatly from their programme.

“The Mathis programme uses pictures instead of numbers as a way of learning mathematics. This has been very beneficial for our pupils as they also get to learn a variety of other subjects, including linguistics and life skills at the same time as mathematics.

“We thank Rowland Wagner who organised the facilitators for his continued support of our school,” said Dlamini.

HE Izotsha Primary Golf Day was a success with an array of Port Shepstone businesses coming out in support.

The annual event was held to raise funds for Izotsha Primary School, with 120 players participating.

After completing the course participants and families enjoyed a festive prize giving that featured performances from classic rock band, The Tequila Twins.

Port Shepstone Country Club manager Carrie Pieterse said the event was a huge success despite the cold and thanked everyone who supported it.

Izotsha Primary School principal Neville Richards said the school, which was celebrating it’s 134th birthday, was very grateful for the support.

“We’d like to thank the country club, our sponsors, Sandy Fitzgerald for organising the whole thing as well as the parents who came out to support.

“All proceeds will go towards improving the growth of the school’s sports facilities and other infrastructure,” said Richards.

Port Shepstone High school ‘romantic’ concert impresses THE Port Shepstone High School Ensem­ ble impressed audiences with their ro­ mantic ballads at a concert at the school recently.

Under the overriding title “Don’t stop the music”, the ensemble performed a myriad of musical pieces touching on topical themes including “The Call of Africa” and “Love, Life and Loss”.

PEAKER and journalist Shellique CarbyBird held an autism awareness talk at Mbango Valley on Friday.

Carby-Bird, also diagnosed autistic, said the purpose of the talk was to touch people’s lives.

“As someone who has experienced the disease first-hand I disagree with people who do not want to acknowledge the fact that people with autism suffer, we suffer a lot.”

She said people living with autism suffer a myriad problems relating to health, social coherence and psyche.

“I was bullied and harassed throughout school and although I now hold a degree in journalism and anthropology, I battled throughout university because I also had a learning disability, and lecturers would not allow me an extension I needed for my exams.

“The problems and judgments continued throughout my working life when my bosses could not understand that I needed to be in a secluded space to be able to function,” she said.

Carby-Bird, who grew up in Hillcrest, but now lives in Pietermaritzburg, said her motivation to persevere came from her hunger for independence.

“I believe in a holistic approach and decided not to rely on pills and medication alone as the solution [to my autism],” said Carby-Bird.

Despite her disability Carby-Bird has managed to hold several positions at the Association for Autism and Autism South Africa (ASA).

She also wrote for UK-based autism newsletter, Aspirations, was a sub-editor at South Coast Fever, DisAbility Connexion and is now a content developer for an international company.

NTREPRENEURS, seasoned business­ women, community champions, activ­ ists and advocates from around the world will unite in Durban next month for Mrs Universe 2017.

As an activist­themed event, Mrs Universe falls outside the typical arena of pageantry, and recognises individual efforts made by each married contestant in her own country to uplift and empower wom­ en.

Mrs Gabon, Gwen Madiba, is a TV host, global entrepreneur and a human and women’s rights activist both in her home country in central Africa and in her “adopt­ ed” home, Canada.

Nigeria’s contestant, 35­year­old Faith Ifeoma Ogaga, has woven her love for bright colours and creativity into a success­ ful career as a fashion designer.

“My philosophy has always been ‘If you can dream it, you can achieve it as long as you keep working hard towards it’,” says the mother of two from Delta State, Niger­ ia. The entrepreneur is also passionate about “giving back” and volunteers at a lo­ cal centre for widows where she shares her skills to empower women to be self­suffi­ cient.

Mrs Singapore, Racheal Olivero, is an events manager who is involved in several charitable organisations including the Sing­ apore Red Cross Home of the Disabled, ARC Children Centre and Touch Community Service.

A mother to two daughters, Olivero has worked on a local, educational TV series targeting pre­schoolers.

As a dyslexic, she found a way of us­ ing her drawing skills to help overcome the disorder and teaches this skill to dyslexic children The theme of “Empowering Women, Creating Change” will feature prominently in every activity leading up to the Mrs Uni­ verse World Final on 2 September 2017. All 84 contestants will participate in the #On­ eVoice march against gender­based vio­ lence and child abuse in the Durban city

centre on August 30.

The women will also visit schools in the greater Durban area and spend time at Verulam­based LIV Village for orphaned and vulnerable children, to encour­ age girls to study further and empower themselves with education.

The World final will take place at Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Cen­ tre on 2 September 2017.

Primary school wins competition A

TEAM from Siphakamile Combined Primary in Bhobhoyi did their school proud when they won first prize at the Water Explorer competition in Howick last Thursday.

The school is in a very poor area and is not well-resourced. They were competing against teams from Howick High, Laddsworth Primary, Danville Park Girls High and Northdene Prep.

They walked away with the Water Explore Tap trophy and R10 000, which will go towards their eco projects.

The WESSA Water Explorer Programme is an online fun, inspiring and educational programme that empowers pupils across the world to lead joint action on water issues for their schools and communities.

Key to Siphakamile’s success has been their permaculture garden that supplies the school and needy pupils with healthy food year round.

Their grey water project also enables the school to be involved and take responsibility in ensuring the garden survives during the dry months and

drought.

With 24 Jojo tanks on site they are able to harvest 60 000 litres of water, and bucket-and-basin systems outside each classroom has ensured that every drop counts.

They have started an indigenous tree nursery which they have used to increase shade in their grounds and supply other schools with trees for their Arbor Day events.

The school also participates in beach and river clean-ups.

The school brought seven pupils to showcase their science projects and six were recognised as good projects

by Eskom, with three walking away with bronze medals.

Olwandle High science and tech­ nology teacher Nonto Mbhele said the performance of pupils was “outstand­ ing” for a first­time entry.

“We are thankful for the achieve­ ment as this was our first attempt,” said Mbhele.

The municipality was awarded for ensuring that women formed an integral part of our workforce and are supported to rise to supervisory and management positions through coaching and mentoring.

The municipality will continue ensuring that women empowerment forms part of the district’s developmental agenda and through women empowerment we are also able to fight the triple challenge of poverty, unemployment and inequality.

TOURISM 360 JUSTIN MACKRORY: CEO SOUTH COAST TOURISM

Adding to events AT the recent Ingeli Show in Harding a pleasing aspect of the event was the hosting of a leg of the National Off-road Motor Bike Championships.

The area around Harding is ideal for off the beaten track competition like this and many participants came from all over South Africa to garner much needed ranking points and to enjoy the country hospitality in the Umuziwabantu area.

For events that have limited budgets and less pulling power than mega events I often encourage promoters to have “piggy back” sub events that can lock in more feet on site and also add publicity for a certain area.

In Harding there was already set up support infrastructure which is certainly of interest to sport and adventure event hosts wishing to keep their own budgets to reasonable levels and not duplicate costs.

People are wary of the “same old, same old” so innovation and inclusion of new draw cards (such as regional or national competition) affords events more scope to satisfy their exhibitors, sponsors, attendees and media. Conferen-

ces specific to an event type can also reinforce the appeal of the occasion.

This I guess is why the International Olympic Committee (IOC) over the l past few games have been accommodating new sport codes and post games the Para Olympics are held in the same city.

There are literally hundreds of lesser known sport and leisure codes that have many hundreds of active participants at their national competitions and we are looking at sourcing these organisations to prop up our out of season tourism and to assist certain local events in gleaning a stronger presence and value adding for our visitors and locals.

There is that cliché “thinking out the box” and certainly events that constantly reinvent themselves or harvest value adding elements to their programmes have a much better chance of sustaining and remaining of interest.

Our Ugu district is an ideal platform for yearround events – after all our tourism relies heavily on them.

Urgent help needed SOMEONE please hear our plea with our problem.

We contacted the Uvongo health department and unfortunately, they were unable to assist with a problem we have with our body corporate.

The chairman refuses to move a pile of garden refuse behind a metre high wall where all sorts of insects and mainly large cockroaches have been flying into our home for the past two years.

We cannot afford the expense of sprays and other insecticides any longer being pensioners.

He says it is a compost heap that has been there

for years. Actually it is accumulated grass and leaves, so there is a difference. He told the inspector that they will put rat and cockroach poison down which is not the answer for children, animals and birds around the area in the complex yard.

He also promised to monitor it every three months. This for me is unacceptable. We need someone with authority to investigate this property problem further.

Eclipse of the sun THE great American eclipse cast a 113 km wide path of totality from Oregon to South Carolina at 10.16 am Oregon time, taking one hour and 33 minutes to pass.

We in SA only experienced a partial eclipse, but as we are nine hours ahead of Oregon time, it was a non­ event for everyone here.

We might not have experienced any meaningful eclipse in SA but we did get a total eclipse on December 4, 2002, and we are going through a total eclipse of President Jacob Zuma support that has cast a path of totality all the way from Nkandla to the Gupta man­ sion in Saxonwold.

A CO-ORDINATED approach by road users and authorities is needed to reverse the increase in deadly road traffic accidents. The tragic death of 20 human beings last week is a matter of grief and sorrow for the entire country.

Die SPCA: Absoluut onontbeerlik in ons gemeenskap JOHAN PRETORIUS JARE gelede het die uwe die voorreg gehad om oor naweke saam met familielede as vrywilligers by ‘n tak van wat vandag bek­ end staan as die SPCA, aan die Wes­Rand in Gauteng te werk.

Destyds het dit dieselfde naam in Engels gehad, maar was in Afrikaans bekend as die Vereniging vir die Beskerming van Diere.

Vandag is dit net bekend as die SPCA, oft­ ewel die Society for the Prevention of Cruel­ ty to animals.

Destyds was hartverskeurend om te sien hoe swak diere, en veral honde, deur mense behandel en soms mishandel word. Dis om dié rede dat ek by die SPCA van die Laer­ Suidkus gaan kuier het om te hoor hoe dit met hulle gaan. Ek is vriendelik ontvang deur Lauren Ferreira, wat nou reeds vier­ en­‘n­half jaar lank die Bedryfsbestuurder van die tak is, en het baie gou bewyse van my gunstige persepsie van buite gekry. Fer­ reira, ooglopend ‘n toegewyde en entoesi­ astiese diere­liefhebber, erken dat dit dees­ dae baie moeiliker is om genoeg inkomste te genereer.

“Ons het tot dusver ‘n moeilike jaar ge­ had, want baie minder mense as voorheen bring hul honde na ons ‘losieshuis’ toe wan­ neer hulle hier kom vakansie hou of self op vakansie gaan. Ons inkomste uit hierdie bron het met 12% afgeneem.”

Ferreira vertel daar was ook ‘n afname in inkomste uit die SPCA se kliniek, met twee voltydse vee­artse, wat normaalweg ‘n groot bron van inkomste is.

“Mense bring hul diere vir behandeling, en kan dan nie betaal nie. Ons kan hulle nie wegwys nie, want ons missie is om diere te help.” Nog ‘n probleem wat vererger het, is die aantal hawelose honde wat soontoe ge­ bring of op ‘n ander manier daar beland.

“Mense kan die dier of diere nie bekostig nie, of hulle trek na ‘n kleiner blyplek waar

diere nie toegelaat word nie, en die honde beland by ons,” sê Ferreira.

“Daar is selfs mense wat sak en pak trek, en hul honde bloot in ‘n erf agterlaat wat dan later in ‘n erg­verwaarloosde toestand gevind word.”

Sy en haar kollegas is egter deeglik bew­ us van die realiteite van die lewe.

“Ons kan maar net doen wat binne ons vermoë is om die situasie beter te maak. Ons kan die wêreld nie verander nie, ons kan net verligting bring.”

Die SPCA doen ontsaglik baie werk om mense in te lig en raad te gee oor hoe om hul diere te versorg, veral in die landelike ge­ biede, en plekke soos Gamalakhe.

Daar is byvoorbeeld twee programme wat vir leerlinge aangebied word. Een vir Graad R tot Graad 6, en dan van Graad 7 op­ waarts. Die geskrewe en sosiale media soos Facebook word intensief gebruik om die saak van die SPCA te stel en om honde vir aanneming onder die publiek se aandag te bring.

“Ons hou honde so lank as moontlik om­ dat ons nie onnodig lewens neem nie. On­ gelukkig gebeur dit dat sommige honde om die een of ander rede nie aanpas nie, en dan moet die onvermydelike moeilike besluit geneem word.”

Ferreira sê hulle skakel nou met ander SPCA­takke, en hulle het ‘n groot groep vry­ willigers wat help om die honde oefening en aandag te gee, te laat sosialiseer en so normaal as moontlik binne die omstand­ ighede te lewe.

Die gemiddelde aantal honde wat maandeliks wegraak en deur hul eienaars by die SPCA teruggekry word, wissel so tus­ sen 35 en 40 per maand.

Tussen 35 en 50 honde per maand word deur nuwe eienaars aangeneem, en elke maand is daar sowat 120 nuwe aankomel­ inge. Wanneer mense honde by die SPCA aanneem, kos dit hulle R450 vir reuns, en

word. Mense word aangemoedig om klere en ander verbruiksartikels wat geen nut meer het nie, aan die SPCA te skenk. Daar is op die oomblik ook “High Five”­projek waarvolgens R50 per maand geskenk kan word.

Die SPCA se Ontginner van Bemarking en Fondse is Madri Koen, en meer besonder­ hede kan van haar en Lauren verkry word.

Hoewel die SPCA se finansies baie ges­ ond is, soos ekself op hul finansiële state kon sien, het Lauren dit beklemtoon dat geldskenkings, veral van groot onderne­ mings, broodnodig is om te kan oorleef.

Daar is drie winkels, een by die kantoor, en een elk by die Shelly­sentrum en die Har­ bourview­sentrum in Port Shepstone waar enige skenkings van die publiek verkoop

Dit laat ‘n mens so goed voel wanneer wit, swart en kleurling mekaar deesdae op die rugbyveld omhels wanneer ‘n spanmaat ‘n drie druk. Waarom kan ons nie daardie selfde sentimente van die veld af handhaaf nie? Of is dit ‘n dom vraag?

HET u al opgemerk hoe opgewonde mense by ‘n rugbywedstryd kan raak as die televisiekamera hulle gesigte tussen die skare wys?

Sy slaag daarin om dit reg te kry. Skielik is die televisiekamera op haar gerig by wyse van spreke. Dit het sy nie verwag nie. Sy was gewoond daaraan om ‘n eenkant mens te wees. Haar siektetoestand het haar in die destydse kultuur permanent onrein gemaak.

Sy is deur die samelewing uitgestoot. Baie mense in ons dag voel soos sy en is inderdaad “uitgestoot uit die trop,” by wyse van spreke.

Hierdie “onrein” vrou is een van die vele wat

Hom kom en het geglo dat net deur aan die soom van Sy klere te raak sy gesond sou word. Sy is genees, omdat God dit so wou hê, nie omdat sy aan Jesus se klere geraak het nie.

God het haar raakgesien. In Christus het God mos die wêreld raakgesien en liefgehad, ja die ganse skepping. Die kruis is die finale bewys van Sy liefde.

Vir Jesus was hierdie verstote vrou nie maar net nog ‘n gesig in die skare nie. In haar uur van nood was sy vir Hom al wat saak gemaak het.

Om ons loop baie sulke mense rond met fisiese en geestelike nood. Dit manifesteer in depressie, afhanklikheid van dwelms of drank, antisosiale gedrag.

Hulle vra: “Wie sien my raak in my nood?”

Christus vra van ons: “Sien jy hulle nood raak?”

Jy is my hande en voete en oë in hierdie wêreld.

Wat doen jy aan die nood, geestelike en materieel, van ander?

Lei jou optrede hul na Christus? Of wag ons vir ‘n kommissie om die ondersoek te doen?

S Women’s Month comes to a fold making way for Heritage Month, local author and cultural activist Irene Myingwa shares her views on a topic that touches intrinsically on both women and cultural heritage, polygamy.

Myingwa, who has researched and discussed the topic in her book Amagugu asendulo, said polygamy in modern age was “complicated”.

“Isithembu [polygamous marriages] used to be a viable tradition back in the day as families were able to share their lives and responsibilities however in this day and age, there are a lot of factors at play which complicate the institution,” said Myingwa.

These factors she said included the modern cost of living, jealousy among the different households and HIV/Aids and other sexually transmitted illnesses which were previously not

an issue.

“In as much as a man might take all these many wives, there is that one that they tend to favour more than the others and regard as their soul mate.

“Back in the day the other wives, which are not favoured, used to persevere through all that, satisfied only with the assurance that their family was also taken care of. These days women are educated and modernised and have a whole different value system,” said Myingwa.

She said, also unlike previously, today family feuds were not resolved within the household because families in polygamous marriages now lived separate lives in sometimes different cities.

“While it is favourable for children and for most household to be part of a polygamous marriage rather than to be bastardised as many men do these days, polygamous marriages require a lot of money and the husband must also have the emotional maturity to be able to handle all his wives. This is why polygamy today is only mostly practised in royal households or really wealthy families,” said Myingwa.

KWAZULU-NATAL DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORT Proposed Upgrade of D1014 Road Infrastructure, KwaZulu-Natal Notice is given in terms of Regulation 41(c) published under the National Environmental Management Act, 1998 (Act No. 107 of 1998) (as amended) of the intention to carry out listed activities requiring environmental authorization.

Children’s home receives big donation T

HE Mercury Hibberdene Children’s Holiday Home received R520 000 towards refurbishments to the it from the Sibaya Community Trust this month.

The donation, which was handed over on Friday August 18, will pay for renovations to the ablution blocks and main hall and buy equipment, cutlery, crockery and linen.

The home, which is celebrating it’s 80th anniversary this year, provides holidays and educational adventure

camps for underprivileged and vulnerable children from child-headed households, paediatric hospices, children’s homes and disadvantaged schools and hosts over 1 000 children annually.

Facilities at the home include a swimming pool with a water slide and splash pool, an obstacle course, climbing frames and swings, trampolines, volley ball, netball, a soccer field, a large cinema screen, a sunroom as well as a braai area and picnic area.

Chairman of the Sibaya and Trustee of the Sibaya Community Trust, Vivian Reddy, said the organisation was delighted to help.

“For more than eight decades, The Mercury Hibberdene Children’s Holiday Home has provided sanctuary and adventures for children from disadvantaged backgrounds and we would like to see the home continuing to do so for many years to come,” said Reddy. Dance fitness club donates SHERREN Paul of Ultimate Dance Fit­ ness handed over funds to deserving organisations she and her team raised at a fund­raising event on Women’s Day at Park Rynie beach.

Proteas need strong leadership FORMER Proteas captain Graeme Smith says “strong leadership” is needed for the national team. A new coach is set to be unveiled for the national team, with former West Indian paceman Ottis Gibson the hot favourite to replace Russell Domingo.

In an interview with Netwerk24, Smith was hesitant to say whether Gibson’s appointment would be the right one.

“We’ll first have to see how things go with him (Gibson) at the helm. One thing is certain, there is good, strong leadership needed for the team.”

According to Smith, the first task for the new coach would be to sit down with AB de Villiers and get the player to make clear his future international ambitions.

De Villiers has played on and off for the Proteas in recent times.

“The situation with AB de Villiers needs to get sorted once and for all so that there is clarity for everyone and where they stand with him. The new coach will play a large and important role in that.”

Smith was speaking after being unveiled as head coach of Gauteng franchise, the Benoni Zalmi, who will participate in the inaugural T20 Global League later this year.

Highveld Lions coach Geoffrey Toyana, who was among the frontrunners for the Proteas head coaching role, has been appointed as Smith’s assistant.

International racers at Dezzi this weekend FEVER REPORTER FANS are in for a tyre-slaying treat this weekend at Dezzi Raceway as Monster Energy driver from the UK, Luke Woodham will be participating in the SupaDrift Series 05 event on Friday August 25 and Saturday August 26.

Woodham, the undisputed Gymkhana Grid RWD in 2014, 2015, and 2016 as well as British Drift Championship in 2016 and 2017, said the series is to be a “wild ride”.

“SupaDrift will be a notch in the belt and I can’t wait to go door-to-door against the South African drifters. I’ve seen them in action and will do my best in the loaned car,” said Woodham.

Also participating in the race will be Jim McFarlane, driving his Achilles Tyres-sponsored V8 Nissan who said he was certain there would be “fierce competition”.

“Drivers are always going to be pushing the limits and come for you when you are on top, but I expect nothing less from the local and international challengers,” said McFarlane.

He said there will be a qualifying round for the national race in Gauteng in November at the event. “Local drivers will also have the opportunity to qualify for Gymkhana GRiD in the ‘drumdash’ competition, which takes place during lunch hour in the days scheduled,” said McFarlane.

Athletes prepared for iconic marathon U

GU Athletics Club (UAC) has assembled a group of runners to undertake the pilgrimage to Pietermaritzburg for the Mandela Day Marathon on Sunday.

The 42.2km race finishes in Howick and the club is sending 34 athletes, of those, 12 will take part in the marathon, 18 in the 21.1km halfmarathon and four in the 10km race.

UAC head of athletes, Eddie Ramaloo, told

athletes that the course is tough and must be treated with respect.

“There are many hills to climb especially the deceptive hill known as the ‘Struggle Hill’, which stretches for 16km,” said Ramaloo.

He also reminded athletes that the mandate has always been clear and it is to enjoy the race and finishing it.

Umzumbe to host extreme enduro race S

OUTH Africa’s top extreme enduro riders are headed for the South Coast this Saturday for the second edition of the Alfie Cox Invitational which will take place from 9am to 3pm.

The thrilling elimination-based contest is set to bring out the best from a talented group of riders who will battle it out on the 11km-long track at Henderson’s Farm in Umzumbe.

Cox, who has won multiple stages at the world’s toughest race, the Dakar Rally, and major titles around the globe, says the event presents an excellent test for riders midway through the season.

“We have the cream of the crop signed up. It’s a challenging event which demands riders to be well above average,” said Cox. The star-studded field includes defending champion, KTM Factory Racing Team’s Scott Bouverie as well as fellow South Coast local, Red Bull’s Wade Young from Paddock. Travis Teasdale from Pietermaritzburg and Jason Munro of Durban are also expected to be among the front-runners along with Kirsten Landman of Shongweni who will be the only female on the start line.

Cox confirmed that competitors will have to brave three gruelling rounds in order to claim the crown.

“Ten of the slowest riders will be eliminated after the first two rounds so there is always pressure. In the final, riders must finish within the allotted time of 75 minutes in order to complete the race,” he said.

Cox says once again riders will have to exhibit technical prowess in order to conquer it.

“It consists of river beds, waterfalls, roots, vines and it will have some steep downhills as well as rocky climbs,” Cox said.

The route’s accessibility means spectators can follow the action and get behind the riders.

“This is what the event is about. This is about giving back to the sport. It is walking distance to see the climbs. Most of the route is accessible by cars so spectators can soak up everything.

There are not many opportunities like this in South Africa. It is an eye-opener,” Cox said.
