Residents from Ntembisweni, Mbuba, Njangabantu, and eMasimini were devastated after the force of nature left their homes roofless.

Resident Khonaliphi Ntuli said: “I thought I was going to die inside my house. I could see my house falling apart while I was inside. I

ran out and tried to alert my other neighbours. When I walked out, the whole village was covered by dark clouds and the violent windstorm was moving very fast.”

Ward Councillor Siyabonga Hlophe said a report was submitted to uMvoti Municipality to assist the affected families.

“It was such an unfortunate incident. There were no injuries reported, but I would like to appeal to the residents who were affected to come forward and report to the municipality,” he said.

The head of Disaster Management, Fire and Rescue in uMvoti, Bheki Vilakazi, said a team visited the area to assess the damage.

“We compiled a report and thereafter it will be submitted to the uMzinyathi District.

The district will send it to the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) for further investigation,” said Vilakazi.

Authorities urged residents to practice caution, saying they are not sure when weather conditions would re-

turn to normal. uMvoti Municipality spokesperson Phindile Phungula said in a statement: “Although the exact value of damage is yet to be established, the families living in these homes were left destitute with municipal disaster management having to step in and assist with relief.

“With no certainty as to when the weather will return to a calm and stable condition, all residents are urged to practice caution and motorists are advised to travel only if absolutely necessary.”

With the district comprising mainly rural areas, delivering water to its citizens is a mammoth task and the additional new water tankers — worth R39 million — are to be used to ease the pressure. uMzinyathi District Municipality Communications Manager Nomonde Nzimakwe said the tankers were purchased to “reach even the most isolated parts of the district; and to address water shortages in the areas of Msinga, Nquthu, uMvoti, and Endumeni.”

The official handover was held at King Edward Park in Greytown. uMzinyathi District Municipality is one of the districts in KwaZuluNatal that has been severely affected by the drought that has plagued practically the entire country over the past few years.

athi District Municipality Mayor Petros Ngubane said: “I am proud to introduce these water tankers to amakhosi [chiefs] and uMzinyathi citizens. These trucks must be handled with care and allocated accordingly. Water tankers are expected to serve the people of uMzinyathi without any political interference. People of all areas must be treated equally, and served with dignity.

“The water in these trucks is not for sale, no one should be subjected to buying water delivered by these trucks.”

THE WhatsApp Stokvel group that has been doing the rounds in the community is a pyramid scheme, this according to the National Stokvel Association of South Africa (Nasasa).

Unsuspecting victims of the scheme are duped into believing that it’s a genuine saving vehicle.

Residents who spoke to the Gazette said the first few people who deposited their R200 had received a pay-out of R1 000 back however, most of the people who have invested have not been paid. The scheme generates revenue by collecting R200 from the new members.

Nasasa Communications Officer Sabelo Mncwango said: “The WhatsApp Stokvel group where people are being asked to pay R200 is a pyramid scheme.

“Scams and pyramid schemes are types of businesses that are likely to directly or indirectly harm the relations between businesses and consumers.

They unreasonably prejudice or deceive consumers.”

The South African Banking Risk Information Centre (Sabric) urged consumers to be sceptical of any investment that seems too good to be true, to prevent being deceived by so-called investments that promise quick, high and guaranteed returns.

Sabric Acting CEO Susan Potgieter said: “In South Africa, these schemes generally meet the criteria of either a traditional Ponzi or pyramid scheme.

“Both schemes see returns generated for earlier investors through revenue paid by new investors, rather than from legitimate investments or business activities. At the point where there are more existing investors than new investors, the scheme collapses and all monies invested are lost.”

People who were expecting to make a good return on their investment not only get nothing, but also stand to lose most, if not all the money they initially invested.

“A promoter promises high returns over a short period and your returns increase with the number of people that you recruit to the scheme.

“A fee or initial investment is required to participate in the scheme. Participants are asked to recruit more investors and are rewarded for bringing them into the scheme.

“The scheme has multiple levels of members, all collecting commission on a single transaction. There is no underpinning financial investment that generates growth.

“Participants are sometimes taught how to circumvent detection methods. They are often disguised as stokvels and may even use virtual currencies, like Bitcoin, to sidestep the formal banking sector where they could be detected,” said Potgieter, who added that short investment periods, sometimes as little as 10 days, with very high rates of return and strong encouragement to reinvest automatically is another sign of a pyramid scheme.

“People should be aware of the fact that these schemes operate on trust and an invitation to invest can therefore often come from someone close to you, such as a family member, community leader or religious figure.”

The increasing trend to use WhatsApp closed user groups may stem from the belief that the app offers end to end encryption and therefore anonymity.

TIPS TO SPOT A PYRAMID SCHEME: • Promises to deliver an unreasonable return on investment.

• Promises overnight profits or income based on your ability to recruit.

• Relies on recruitment without meetings with real members.

• Sells no tangible products but makes conditional promises.

• It has no physical address or landline. Only WhatsApp is used in recent times.

• It has no financial services provider license.

• Applies pressure techniques.

• Doesn’t give refunds.

Five arrested for fatal stabbing of two men

FIVE suspects were arrested for the murder of two men who were stabbed at Shane, near Greytown, on Saturday.

The suspects, aged 18 and 19, were arrested at their homesteads in Shane on Sunday.

Their arrests follow an incident that occurred on October 26 at 11 pm after a group of men were embroiled in an argument at a local tavern.

It is alleged that, during the brawl, two men were stabbed, however they failed to report the matter to police.

Following the stabbing, a group of individuals attacked two individuals in retaliation and stabbed them to death.

The deceased were identified as Sipho Mbeje (20) and Sabelo Sithole (21).

Police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker said: “Detectives from Matimatolo launched an investigation on [Sunday] to hunt down a

group of men responsible for a double murder over the weekend at Shane near Greytown.”

The KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Khom­bin­kosi Jula, commended police officers from Matimatolo for the speedy arrests.

“It is very disconcerting to still find that, in certain communities, people choose to resort to mob justice rather than to report crimes to authorities so that a fitting punishment can be meted by our courts.

“This kind of behaviour is contributing to the province’s notoriety as a murder capital. We will continue to deal with such individuals very severely,’’ he said.

The arrested suspects were due to appear in the Greytown Magistrate’s Court on Monday, October 28 facing charges of murder.

“The community of Oshikishini has been struggling to access basic services for the past 20 years while the ownership of the farm was still in the hands of the farmers.

“Upon launching the project, Ngubane emphasised that the recruitment process will be advertised in the local newspaper. Thereafter an advert was published in the Greytown Gazette. Members of the community who qualified applied and followed all the processes.

“We established that while the recruitment process was underway, Councillor Dlamini was busy mobilising the community and promising supporters of his political party [Inkatha Freedom Party] jobs.

“When the project started, a handful of people who were employed by the ward

‘Smash-and-grabs’ – how to avoid becoming a victim OPPORTUNISTIC criminals rely on the element of surprise to strike at unsuspecting motorists. The best way to prevent a “smash-and-grab” from happening to you, is to be alert.

“Smash-and-grabs sadly happen across most cities and end up turning what should be a pleasant drive into a nightmare. Just recently in Cape Town, a video was shared of a motorist being robbed when he was stuck in slow-moving traffic. Would-be robbers are normally on the lookout for distracted drivers with clearly visible valuable items that are easy to access, explains Hattingh. “They are looking for something that they can easily and quickly grab before running off while the driver is too shocked and surprised to respond. Laptops and handbags on front seats are popular items that have been stolen in smash-and-grabs.”

What can you do to protect yourself?

“The two most important things to do, is to always pay attention to your surroundings and to never leave valuable items in clear sight to any passing pedestrian.

“Criminals don’t need a lot of time to strike – if you look at the video of the recent incident in Cape Town, for example, you will see how incredibly quickly the whole incident can happen,”said Hattingh.

Safety tips: • Leave valuable items in the boot or store it safely under your seats.

• If you find yourself in an area where traffic is moving very slowly (for example because of congestion or due to a defective traffic light) make sure you keep your eyes open for any pedestrian movement around your vehicle.

• Avoid distractions. Your focus should be

on the safe operation of your vehicle and nothing else. The phone call and the cigarette can wait.

• Lock your doors and keep the windows closed.

• Avoid sitting in your car for a prolonged period of time (along the side of the road or perhaps in a parking garage) where you potentially become an easy target while concentrating on a phone call or something else that distracts your attention from your surroundings.

• Leave a gap between you and the car in front of you to give you room to escape (i.e. drive away from any incident), if anything should happen.

• Consider installing special window safety film. It is usually tinted so that no one can see into the car, while also preventing the windows from shattering.

“The key point to remember in all of this is the need for vigilance. You can already make a massive difference in avoiding a smash-and-grab by simply paying attention to what is happening around you.

“If you see anything suspicious, make sure you report it to the closest police station or to law enforcement as soon as possible, so that fellow motorists can also be protected,” said Hattingh. — Supplied.

Ngobese said a community meeting was called to remedy the situation however, he said the meeting did not yield any positive results.

“Some of these community members demanded to be employed as managers and security guards. There was no way the constructor could have employed people who did not have the required skills for the projects,” Ngobese said.

Ngobese accused Dlamini of giving jobs to his pals in all community projects.

The Greytown Gazette contacted Dlamini for comment. He denied all the allegations made against him, saying it was a political plot orchestrated by some senior members of the community who want to tarnish his name and remove him from his position as ward councillor. “The allegations made against me are not true. I am not sowing division in the communi-

ty. “The constructor approached me as the ward councillor and asked me to call for a public meeting to explain to the community about project. The contractor also asked me, in my capacity as the ward councillor, to select people who were going to work at the project. To my surprise, the contractor did not come back to me but a few days later I saw adverts on the poles, advertising vacancies at the construction site. We were all shocked.

“When the construction work started, the first people who were hired at a community meeting were not happy and accused the municipality of being biased,” he said.

Dlamini also denied that he was giving jobs to his pals and family members.

“He [Ngobese] is misleading the community.

The majority of construction workers working on the project are members of the ANC and not the IFP,” Dlamini said. Attempts to get a comment from Umvoti Municipality were unsuccessful at the time of going to print.

CONSTRUCTION work resumed on Friday, October 25 at an electricity project in Muden after a group of residents brought the project to a halt for more than 30 days as they demanded jobs.

The locals, who claimed to have been promised job opportunities before the project started, arrived at the site at the Oshikishini area in Muden and threatened to stop all the construction work if the constructor did not give them jobs.

Community Liaison Officer Jabulani Nxumalo told the Gazette that he was manhandled when three angry men arrived at the construction site.

“I reported the matter to the SAPS in Muden and a case was registered. But, after we had a meeting last week, I decided to withdraw the case on condition that should they [suspects] come back and attack me at the site, I will reopen a case against them,” he said. A source at the Muden Police Station confirmed the incident.

On Tuesday, October 22 Muden residents and construction workers staged a protest outside the offices of uMvoti Municipality, accusing Ward Councillor Bhojabhoja Dlamini of sowing division within the community.

Community leader Jeffry Ngobese said: “[Regarding] the Oshikishini farm, the community has been fighting for ownership for the past 20 years. The matter was taken to court and the community won the case.

“Residents had no access to clean water and electricity but, when the court ruled in favour of the community, government then started providing basic services to the community,” Ngobese said.

According to Ngobese the project was launched a month ago but the protest saw it come to a standstill for more than 30 days.

Savage, who has strong ties with the Greytown community and Letcee, appealed to residents to support him.

“I will be running the full Soweto Marathon next Sunday.

I am raising funds for Letcee through the GivenGain Foundation. Anyone is welcome to contribute.

“My connection to Letcee is through my wife, Annika, who worked there until last month when we relocated to Iswepe, Mpumalanga.

“I am planning to run this marathon as a qualifier for next year’s Comrades Marathon,

which would be my third. Any time under four hours would be a really nice achievement, especially in such a big race as the Soweto Marathon, also known as the People’s Marathon,” said Savage.

The money Savage raises will be used to support and improve the Play-Able Pickup Project, which aims to serve children with disabilities as well as guide and serve their families and communities.

This is a project with a great cause and we are very grateful and appreciative of Lawrence for choosing Letcee and this project.

New pool opens with a splash for charity PUPILS at New Hanover Preparatory School (NHP) held the official opening of the new, 25 m swimming pool on October 24.

A number of speeches were made that highlighted the history of the old pool, the building process and filling of the new pool, as well as looking forward to what this facility will provide for our NHP children for generations to come.

Pastor Rolf Schmidt blessed the swimming pool and two of our senior swimmers, Liam Freese and Melissa Dobeyn, cut the ribbons,

signifying the official opening of this worldclass sporting facility. The Grade 7 class then participated in the first official timed relay race in the pool, whereafter the whole school, staff and parents took part in the Swimchix Charity Swimathon, where the school community raised R22 000 which will be donated to the various charities supported by the Swimchix inititative. Participating in the Swimathon was a wonderful way to officially open the pool, and keep passing the blessing on to others. — Supplied.

I THINK it is not really true to say all politicians are liars.

Mandela [Nelson], Sobukwe [Robert] and many others were not liars and we have current politicians who are also not liars. However, we have so-called politicians who are chancers and opportunists who are swimming in the wrong pool because of greediness and power mongering.

Because of a lack of vision for the game they chose to play, they create all sorts of problems and obstacles for themselves and, when they are obligated to come and answer on such, they start making excuses and postponements, all in the interests of misleading our people.

According to our knowledge, provided to us by politicians, when a project or development happens in the community or ward, people of that ward or community must immediately be beneficiaries in terms of jobs, skills development and others. That is why there is a certain percentage allocated for locals and non-locals in terms of the above but, to our surprise, that is not happening with our uMvoti Municipality when it comes to ward 7.

This ward is under immense oppression by the municipality because of some players playing in the wrong league.

People of ward 7 have been denied access to projects and job opportunities in their area, such as at the hospital, TVET College and Slum Clearance to name a few.

People of ward 7 were denied a chance to choose [which of] the two soccer fields [were going to receive an] upgrade. Before the contractor could even start, we sent our councillor with an objection to the upgrade of this small field and we asked that the municipality hear our views on this, but they chose to ignore us.

We have stopped the municipality from overly stealing ward 7 people’s jobs at the TVET College, where they had called people from their wards, depriving ours of their deserved opportunity.

We stopped them because the speaker and his crew were undermining and ignoring agreements reached between our committee and both the provincial and regional structures of the ANC and after that with the mayor.

We agreed on the initial number of people to be hired [and on the] proce-

dure to be followed. The community is our witness on this because, after [meeting] with the mayor, we all went to meet with the community to tell them what we had agreed upon.

Seeing all this happening, we then requested the speaker of the council, through our councillor, to come and give us clarity on why all [this] is happening. He has promised [to come] on four occasions but has never honoured [his promise].

We know he will not come to ward 7 because he has lied enough.

We also know that the speaker and a certain high-profile figure at the hospital have made it extremely hard for ward 7 people to gain access to job opportunities [in the cleaning services].

Employees from the cleaning company should have taken their annual leave, but they haven’t only because ward 7 people must not be hired at the hospital.

Phase two at Slums Clearance has started, but the ward 7 community has been deliberately left out. We don’t know who the community liaison officer is and how they hired labour there.

These are all the issues we want the speaker to answer on, but we know he cannot because at one stage he could not come as he had to see the doctor.

Subsequent to that, he had some commitment in Pietermaritzburg for the whole week.

On a certain day he had to come and introduce the ward councillor and give the community a chance to add three ward committee members, but he did not come. Instead, he sent V. Ndlovu to perform the duty of his behalf. At this time his ear was [aching], and he went to the doctor again.The speaker knew he could not face the ward 7 community because we had complained to him about the non­performance of the committee. Therefore, he knew that we were not going to add [new members] but we would insist on electing a new one, which is what we did. Now, the speaker and the municipal manager do not want to acknowledge the newlyelected committee because [it is a] municipal committee and not a ward committee. So, it is evident that this one is not going to serve the interest of the municipality but that of the community, therefore they will not accept it.

THE Kranskop Community Corrections office embarked on a cleaning campaign at KwaNgcolosi Tribal Court using parolees and probationers (those offenders who serve their sentences in the community).

The cleaning campaign was organised by X.M. Makhathini (supervisor) and S.N. Khoza (monitoring official).

It was one of the duties of Kranskop Com-

munity Corrections office to encourage parolees and probationers to give back to the community as part of their sentences.

The office also thanked chief Nkosinathi Bhengu of KwaNgcolosi area for allowing them to conduct a clean-up campaign at his tribal court. The campaign was supervised

Born and raised in Greytown, the former Greytown High School pupil who matriculated last year is optimistic about her chances of winning the competition.

“My parents are my source of inspiration — through all the challenges they have faced they strived for a better life, not only for themselves but also for me. They have been my source of strength, made everything possible. They believe in me and make me feel worthy, and they have taught me to follow my dreams no matter what it takes.

“I am also inspired by people who know where they are going, those who strive joyfully to accomplish their goals and are determined to accomplish what they set out to do and do it enthusiastically and with hope,” Mchunu said.

Mchunu entered Mr and Miss Luminous South Africa in August.

“My application was successful and, in a few hours, I was in the running for Miss Luminous South Africa Plus-Size 2019 and I am currently a finalist.

“I was never really passionate about modelling at an early age but my love for it began when I was 16.

“Mr and Miss Luminous South Africa is a non-profit organisation founded by Michelle Zama in 2018. It aims to produce future leaders of note and raise a generation of young people who embrace a sense of social responsibility. The organisation’s objective is to inspire and encourage the youth of South Africa,” she said.

Despite all the challenges she has encountered, Mchunu said the interesting thing she has learned from being in the modelling industry is to be kind and caring and to create change in people’s lives, and to be the spark that ignites the light for those in hopeless situations in their communities.

“I keep myself motivated by believing in myself; that I can achieve anything and everything I put my mind to — the sky’s the limit. I also believe that what is meant to happen will happen and everything has it’s own time.

“What I noticed when I started my modelling career is that you don’t always win, and I experienced that in my very first pageant, Miss KwaZulu-Natal, where I only won the

Public Choice Award and not the Miss title.

I overcame that by telling myself that you cannot win all competitions you enter but rather you should enter a pageant in order to grow as an individual and to create change in people’s lives.”

While she was at school, Mchunu said she did not lose focus on her studies, saying: “It’s basically a matter of prioritising — I make time for what is more important and urgent in that particular period. If I’ve got an examination, I make sure that I do it during my spare or break time.

“For me, community outreach programmes are the most important part of modelling. I have visited old age homes and children’s homes in Durban in the past weeks as Miss Luminous embraces South Africa as a whole. I have visited Arcadia twice and I’m planning to visit the children’s home and Khayalami Children Village soon.

“I hope to achieve growth, build leadership skills, create change in people’s lives, and inspire the people of SA and so far I feel I have started achieving these factors,” said Mchunu In motivating others to follow in her path, Mchunu said: “To my peers — never stop following your dreams, no matter how hard or long it takes, as nothing comes easy; you learn more from failure than from success.

“Do what you can with all you have, wherever you are, and never allow negativity to stand in your way. Remember, whether you do good or bad, people will always have something negative to say about you.

“I’ve also been chosen as a delegate for Bali Asia International Model United Nations, taking place in January 2020 in Bali, Indonesia, which is not part of modelling but which aims to provide a platform for young future diplomats to encourage themselves in understanding international issues and policy related to culture, debate and sharing perspectives among participants from different backgrounds and different ethnicities. It is also the best place to gain some skills in diplomacy, public speaking, negotiation, and some critical thinking towards the international issues within an international atmosphere and framework.”

In order to attend the event in Bali, Mchunu called on the community to support her and help sponsor her trip, saying: “I can’t afford to do it on my own but I need each and everyone’s support as I am raising both Greytown’s and my country’s flag high.”

THE non-profit organisation, namely Imfundo Yethu Foundation in eNtembisweni area, hosted a soccer and netball tournament in this area recently. eNtembisweni area is one of the rural areas under Umvoti with a high rate of theft,drug and alcohol abuse,violence and teenage pregnancy.

The aim of the tournament was to unite the youth and to distance them from these social issues.

Since the announcement of the tournament, in mid-August, till the day of the tournament, the youth spent most of their time preparing for the tournament and through that, they didn’t have time to engage in these problematic activities.

The tournament raised the spirit of unity amongst the youth, to fight against crime in our community. Crime has been a major problem for people aiming to grow busi-

nesses in this area. They also said “no to women and child abuse”.

The positive feedback received from people within the community and beyond has firmly proven that sport is a major thing that brings out the spirit of love and unity.

The team that won received a Kaizer Chiefs original jerseys, trophy and a cash prize.

Players of the tournament received vouchers from Brazo17.

SPORT NEWS St Cathryn’s news THE very hot and dry conditions we are experiencing are starting to have an effect on the golf course, and especially on the greens. They are a little bumpy and very hard, but still producing the odd birdy.

The windy conditions give distances on the downwind sides of the course and holding the ball up in the air on the fairways when playing into the wind. Verticutting of the greens is continuing, with a light dusting of sand being applied.

We are not doing our spring treatment yet due to the lack of irrigation water and the veritcutting — which removes thatch buildup — conditions experienced on the greens, so when some rain falls we would like the water to trickle through to the soil and growing medium.

The Farmers Agri-care Monthly Mug had some of the Plennegy St Cathryn’s interclub team members in the field — this was their final opportunity to work on their swing and putting before the biggest amateur golf tournament in the world, this being the KwaZulu-Natal Golf Union’s Interclub tournament, set to be played over this coming weekend on the South Coast.

The team is leaving on Thursday to have a practice round at Selborne and to acclimatise to the South Coast conditions. On behalf of all members, we wish both teams well under the captaincy of Fanie van Wyk and team manager Dieter Meyer.

St Cathryn’s/Plennegy team interclub report A Senior Frog and Frog team represented St Cathryn’s at the annual KZNGU Interclub tournament held at Selborne, Umdoni and Umkomaas golf courses over the weekend of October 25 to October 27.

The senior team played Umdoni on Friday and scored 102 points with Tienie Muller the leading scorer for them with 37 points.

The Frog team played an almost unplayable Umkomaas course, as the pin positions were very difficult to get to, and scored 87 points. Marius Muller was their top scorer with a fantastic 35 points. Interclub captain Dieter Meyer had a very difficult day with only 25 points which insured that he would have to wear the green “Not the winner” shirt for lowest round of the day.

The senior team moved onto Selborne on Saturday and scored 84 points with Muller once again leading the way with 35 points. Club captain Fanie van Wyk had a very poor outing, only scoring 22 points, which allowed Meyer to hand over the green shirt with much enthusiasm.

The Frog team had a good day at Umdoni, with 98 points scored, with Meyer overturning his poor form on Friday by scoring 34 points, the highest for the Frog team on Saturday.

Although the Frog team lost the internal competition with the senior team by one point, they went through to the Sunday Alliance competition played at Umdoni. They were placed sixth overall in the Frog division after being in 19th position after Friday’s round.

Marius (38 points), Lawrence Savage (34 points) and Meyer (33 points) played very well to score a total of 105 points. They tied in first place with Athlone Golf Club but, unfortunately, lost out to them in a count out.

St Cathryn’s is probably the smallest club represented at this tournament, with a limited number of players available for selection, so this result is certainly one to be proud of.

Muller won the trophy for the most points scored over the Friday and Saturday round with a total of 72 points with Marius coming in second with 68 points.

Reeling in the big one at Umvozana THE Umvoti Agricultural Society(UAS) hosted their annual bass fishing competition as a fundraiser for Golf 911 (G911) on Saturday, October 19 at the Jondol on the Mispah Road.

Various dams in the Umvozana Valley were kindly opened by various landowners in the area.

This year saw a turnout of 115 entries for the competition. The weather was hot but, luckily, this did not deter the fishermen.

First prize of R4 000 for longest bass went to Vernon Hohls (62,5cm) caught at Umvozana Dam, the second prize was won by Ettiene van Rooyen and third place went to Julian Bhagdath. The swindle prize added to the excitement again this year with the R1 400 being won by Lukas Potgieter (676,5cm in total).

The largest carp prize went to Leonardo Chetty (who is a junior) and heaviest barbel to Eric Redinger. There were place prizes as well as lucky draw prizes for the competitors. Arcadia and the Catholic Church provided meals throughout the day.

There was also a trail run/walk of two distances — 5 km or 10 km. This event was organised by Arcadia and was very well-attended, with over 60 people taking part.

The fishing competition was a great success and the UAS and G911 are very pleased with the generous amount of funds that were raised from the various donations and entrance fees for the competition.
