Overflowing waste skips at the Greytown dumpsite.

Residents: ‘Greytown dump site is a disaster’ ANDILE SITHOLE >>Andile.sithole@media24.com RESIDENTS and business owners along Gordon Street in Greytown have called on authorities to empty the overflowing waste skips at the Greytown dump site.

These overflowing skips have left many residents complaining about the horrid smell coming from the area.

According to some of the residents, the site was last cleared in early December and the skips have not been removed since then.

According to health inspectors, Waste Management, Parks and Recreation is responsible for the maintenance of the site.

Resident Simphiwe Ngubane said: “Despite numerous complaints made by the residents to appeal to the authorities to empty the site every week, waste skips are still overflowing.

“We want to know what leads to this delay

that undermines the dignity of residents.

“In order to address this problem, the department responsible for cleaning the site should clear the site everyday because there are businesses along Gordon Street.

The dump site is a disaster,” he said.

The Greytown Gazette published a story last year to highlight the conditions at the dump site. Some of the business owners in the area even threatened to shut down their businesses because of the issue.

Last week, the Gazette visited the area once again, after residents complained about overflowing waste skips.

Private cars and trucks coming to offload waste materials had to use alternative access roads to offload their domestic waste.

Nguabne added: “The waste skips are overflowing with rotten domestic waste.”

Bongiwe Mchunu from the Umvoti Municipality Waste Management, Parks and Recreation department said teams are dispatched on a daily basis to clean the site.

“It’s not true that the waste skips have not been emptied since December.

“Our teams are working on the site everyday and [take the domestic waste] to the Msunduzi landfill site,” Mchunu said, adding that plans to open a new landfill site in Greytown are at an advanced stage.

“Umvoti Local Municipality, in partnership with uMzinyathi District Municipality, will open a new regional landfill site for Umvoti and uMzinyathi residents.

“The dumping site that we have at the moment is a temporal site because we transport the waste skips to the Msunduzi landfill site.

“Umvoti Municipality donated land where the new landfill site will be based,” Mchunu said. She added that the new regional site will be open at the end of March. uMzinyathi District Municipality health inspector Ntombifuthi Mbatha said: “Our duty as health inspectors is to monitor environmental affairs and efforce [by-laws].”

University not the only option post-matric THE 2019 matric results are in, and young South Africans are considering their options for the year ahead. Those who did not get into university, or who would rather travel than see the inside of a lecture theatre, may choose to take a gap year instead.

Matriculants with a sense of adventure can opt to teach English as a foreign language overseas, as a way to earn money, gain experience and travel the globe — all at the same time.

“Many matriculants find themselves in a situation where they have no real plan or focus for the coming year. This can be frustrating, especially if your peers are busy planning their move to university or joining the workforce. Teaching English gives young South Africans the opportunity to spend the year doing something worthwhile,” says Rhyan O’Sullivan, managing director of the TEFL Academy, SA’s leading course provider of teaching English as a foreign language.

While a university degree is not essential to getting a teaching job overseas, a TEFL qualification, the globally accepted qualification to teach English abroad, is always required. “Many countries in South America and South East Asia take on teachers without university degrees,” says O’Sullivan.

Data collected by the TEFL Academy indicates that the main reasons young people choose a TEFL qualification are related to money, lifestyle and safety.

“Young South Africans are interested in living and working overseas because there are often better opportunities to make more money. For some, a higher standard of living and general safety are also big draws,” says O’ Sullivan.

Taking a gap year can also help ease the transition from school to work or university.

“TEFL teachers can earn important employment skills. When living and working in a foreign country, you become self-sufficient and self-reliant, and develop strong organisational and communication skills. These transferable skills are valued in all workplaces, and will help further a career in any field,” says O’Sullivan.

When studied full time, a TEFL course can typically be completed within four to six weeks. For matriculants looking to start their adventures early this year, now is the time to register, advises O’Sullivan; “Countries like South Korea begin their yearly intake in April. Students who begin their training now will have just enough time to complete their course and apply for a job.” — Supplied.

Municipality cuts overgrown verges ANDILE SITHOLE >>Andile.sithole@media24.com LAST week, the Gazette published a story about overgrown grass on municipal land on Carter Street and the unpleasant conditions that are affecting the value of the houses in the area. On Tuesday last week, a team from Umvoti Municipality was dispatched to cut the overgrown grass that was affecting resident’s property.

Homeowner Thulani Ngcobo had approached the Greytown Gazette after he claimed his verge had been “neglected” for eight months.

Following the article, the Gazette contacted the municipality for comment and Umvo-

ti Municipality spokesperson Phindile Phungula confirmed that a team was dispatched to Carter Street to cut the grass.

“On Tuesday last week, municipal workers from Umvoti started mowing the grass verges outside my house.

However, I am not entirely happy with the work they did because they didn’t remove the grass,” Ngcobo said, adding that other neighbours have taken the initiative to cut the grass verges.

“Brushcutters must do their jobs, and cut all the overgrown verges in town because they belong to the municipality.

“Other residents even bought mowing machines to cut the grass themselves because it looks like nobody cares about us,” he added.

The community must stand against bullying at schools.

Raising awareness on bullying at schools and in the workplace ANDILE SITHOLE >>Andile.sithole@media24.com MALE bullies at schools are twice as likely to turn to bullying their girlfriends and spouses in later years. This is according to a report released by 1 000 Women Trust.

According to the report, South Africa is rated second highest in the world for cyberbullying. The report also revealed that child bullies usually have experienced violence in their homes, most often between their parents.

In speaking about bullying, 1 000 Women Trust director Caroline Peters said: “It can take many forms, including: verbal — includes name-calling, threats of harm, and taunting; and social bullying, which an involve excluding someone intentionally, encouraging others to socially exclude someone, spreading rumours, or publicly shaming someone.”

Peters added that another form of bullying is physical bullying, which often results in physically harming someone or their belongings. “[Another form of bullying] is cyberbullying. This involves using electronic media such as on the Internet, texting, and social media to spread hurtful and damaging stories, rumours and images. Although cyberbullying can take place anywhere and anytime, this form of bullying often can travel rapidly through a school population and beyond, devastating the victims and leaving them feeling powerless,” Peters said.

The director noted that pupils who are perceived as different by others are more likely to be bullied. “These more vulnerable [pupils] include lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth; pupils with physical, learning, or mental health disabilities; and pupils who are targeted for differences in race, ethnicity, or religion,” said Peters.

“Both pupils who bully and pupils who are bullied can suffer lasting psychological effects, including post-traumatic stress.

“It is vital that schools provide support to all the pupils involved in a bullying incident and that schools take steps to reduce bullying,” she said.

1 000 Women Trust believes that bullying can be prevented, with Peters saying: “In a trauma-informed school, the best deterrent to bullying and cyberbullying is to create a culture of acceptance and communication.

“Such a culture empowers pupils to find positive ways to resolve conflicts and has an administration, teachers and other staff who can support pupils in making constructive decisions and respond proactively when aggression of any kind exists on the school campus.”

Establishing an anti-bullying policy at school is one of the most effective ways of eradicating mischievous acts among pupils.

“Know your state and district policies and seek input from all members of your school community to determine how your school will implement rules of conduct, a way for pupils to report bullying, and the process by which the school will act to address reported bullying. Communicate the anti-bullying policy with all stakeholders (teachers, pupils and parents) and put into action a school-

wide plan.

“Disseminate a bullying prevention plan that involves all adults at school [so they know] how to support positive behaviour, address unacceptable actions, and [can] refer pupils who need additional counselling.

“Participate in anti-bullying campaigns and organise workshops for teachers and parents. Arrange sessions where children can speak out and report,” Peters said.

Additionally, educating the school community is important — incorporate bullying prevention in lesson plans, teach pupils how to effectively respond to bullying, and provide resources for parents so they can be partners in your anti-bullying efforts. Finally, encourage the community to participate in awareness campaigns.

Peters added that bullying can also take place at the workplace among co-workers.

THE MOST COMMON TYPES OF BULLYING AT WORKPLACE INCLUDES: • Verbal aggression, insults, derogatory name-calling • Sabotaging work • Spreading gossip or rumours • Physical or verbal threats (including violence) • Making “aggressive or threatening gestures” • Vandalising belongings • Engaging in harmful or offensive initiative practices • Personal attacks based on private life or personal traits Conversely, the following is not considered bullying: • Expressing opinions • Constructive criticism or legitimate complaints • A supervisor “exercising managerial authority,” such as through assigning tasks, work evaluations, layoffs, and other decisions.

Petters added: “Victims of workplace bullies and bystanders should refer to their company’s human resources policy on workplace harassment, and follow the guidelines set up by their office for addressing the complaint— if there are any in place. In certain cases, such as if a bully continually demeans a co-worker in front of others, the victim can address the bully one-on-one first. If the bully blames the victim and/or is unwilling to change his or her behaviour, the victim has the responsibility of reporting the incident.”

A GROUP of concerned homeowners in Acacia Street in Greytown have called for the intervention of local authorities to curb the number of house break-ins in the suburb.

According to some of the residents in Acacia Street, when criminal activity spiralled out of control a few years ago, ratepayers convened a special meeting and signed a petition to request that Umvoti Local Municipality erect high mast spotlights, like those used at sports fields, in the vicinity of their homes.

A resident who asked not to be named for fear of victimisation said:“We are grateful about the fact that the mayor of Umvoti Municipality [Thami Ngubane] responded [to our request] and installed a few spotlights around our homes. In that regard, there was a drastic decrease [in the number of] house break-ins at our street. However, last year we learnt, through the grapevine, that somebody had turned the lights to face the direction of the soccer field. After this, house break-ins started again.

“In a recent incident, I saw a guy jumping into my yard. When he noticed that I was outside, he ran away.”

Another resident who spoke to the Gazette under condition of anonymity said: “Behind our homes there is a sports field that is frequently used by soccer players.

Due to the poor visibility at the field, we heard that a senior official gave an instruction for the lights to be turned to face the direction of the soccer field — leaving our homes in the dark. This gave criminals an opportunity to strike again.

“A few years ago, our homes were [frequently] broken into and our dogs were poisoned. We approached the municipality for assistance. It’s sad to see that the lights that

“The outdoor sports lighting that was put up helped us in reducing house break-ins.

Criminals are now taking advantage [of the fact] that the area is dark [again],” she said.

Another resident said: “Last year, a few days after my neighbour’s home was broken into, suspects broke into my house and stole my tools. I phoned the security company. When the officers arrived, they fired [warning] shots, and the suspects ran away.

The stolen items were recovered the following day, a few metres away from my house.”

Colonel Thembeka Mbele confirmed that the police were investigating a case of theft after copper pipes were stolen from a home in Acacia Street.

‘ECD centres play a vital role in development’ ANDILE SITHOLE >>Andile.sithole@media24.com EARLY Childhood Development (ECD) centres are important in communities as they help to prepare young children for primary school education.

Speaking on the matter, the early childhood project manager at Letcee, Poonam Dwarkaram, said: “Research shows that 80% of the child’s brain is developed by the age of five.

“ECD centres provide essential ECD stimulation through developmentally appropriate activities for young children who are not able to access this need.”

Dwarkaram said the centres have guidelines on what the appropriate activities are and the practitioners working with young children receive ongoing training on ECD and

how they can provide new and exciting activities for children, who they learn through play.

“The activities are designed specifically for the children and ensure that the following areas are developed: fine motor skills, gross motor skills, cognitive development, physical development, social and emotional skills.

“The centres play a vital role in the development of children as they not only provide children with activities, but also with nutritious meals.

“They are also a safe place for the children to play, learn and socialise with other children,” Dwarkaram said.

Letcee is one of the organisations that runs ECD centres, offering various programmes to assist children.

“In our programme, we have guidelines for the ECD centre practitioners on the activities to be done

The following are some of the things parents can look out for when choosing a good centre for their children: safety, security, age appropriate activities, qualified and experienced practitioners as well as nutritionally balanced meals in the centres,” Dwarkaram said.

SPORT NEWS St Cathryn’s news THE players of the Farmers Agri-care monthly mug, which was played on Saturday, January 25, had to contend with varied weather conditions.

The early golfers had a very strong northerly wind and the late golfers had perfect sunshine with little or no wind at times.

Our only sergeant major in the field, E.T. Ntuli, had to remember his army drills on the shooting range all too well: “op jou eie teiken en afmik vir wind,” as Ntuli was one of the early mug starters playing in the wind.

Ntuli was counted out from Maruis­ Muller to end in second place.

Senior sportsman brings home relay gold ANDILE SITHOLE >>Andile.sithole@media24.com A GREYTOWN senior was honoured recently for winning the 100m relay race at the National Golden Games, held in Port Elizabeth in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in October last year.

For his achievement, Alois Xulu, a resident from eNhlalakahle, received a trophy and a certificate from the Department of Sport and Recreation in the uMzinyathi District. He was also nominated as the Male of the Year.

Almost 2 000 senior citizens donned their provincial sporting attire and participated in the two-day Golden Games event, which features

various traditional and indigenous sporting codes.

Xulu, a member of the Isinamuva Senior Citizens Club, said of his achievement: “This inspires me to do more in the future.

“I would like to encourage other senior citizens to wake up and participate in the Golden Games, especially men.

“I was very disappointed to note that there are only two men participating in our club. Most of our members are women,” Xulu said.

Xulu joined the Isinamuva Senior Citizens Club after he retired.

“In 2016 we went to Limpopo to represent KwaZulu-Natal at the Provincial Golden Games competition.

“The province of KwaZulu-Natal

won a trophy and defeated the other eight provinces.

“In 2017 I also participated in the Provincial Golden Games, held in Durban,” Xulu said.

The Department of Social Development, in partnership with the South African Older Persons Forum, introduced the programme to improve the quality of life of the aged by promoting independence and participation in various social, cultural and sporting initiatives that seek to prevent and reduce old-age related afflictions.

In a statement, the department said that the Golden Games aim to bring together older persons across all nine provinces and affords them an opportunity to interact and build friendships with their peers.
