RBAN Light is a contemporary, vibrant church in Pietermaritzburg for people of all ages, race, social and economic backgrounds.

At Urban Light Church, people are equipped to see success in all areas of their lives through inspirational and practical teaching.

While remaining an autonomous church, Urban Light forms part of the Hillsong Network in relationship with Hillsong Church, South Africa. This alliance opened many doors to glean valuable leadership and knowledge on how to build a church that builds a nation.

Lead pastors Julian and Charlene Naicker are the visionaries of Urban Light Church and have a passion for developing leaders and bringing encouragement and hope, not only to their church family, but to the city.

The Urban Light Foundation runs many community projects throughout the year. A feeding scheme was initiated to assist a children’s crèche in Pieter­maritzburg by preparing and delivering fresh meals twice a week.

Providing toiletries and sanitary packs to women who do not have ac-

cess to basic necessities is also an initiative which forms part of the foundation.

These are just a few of the many projects run by Urban Light Church, all of which gauge the support and generous partnership of its church members.

Members are not only encouraged to get involved with community service, they are also encouraged to use their talent and skills to build the church and serve in one of the volunteer teams. Whatever their talents may be, there’s room to help people, make friends and touch lives.

Teams to volunteer in include media and production, the creative team [music and dance], host team, hospitality, Urban kids [Church’s children], and the Urban Light Youth.

Many individuals have seen tremendous growth and have been afforded incredible opportunities to get involved in special events and glean leadership skills which can be applied in all areas of their lives.

Building into people’s lives to help them flourish and grow is a passion shared by Urban Light’s lead pastors.

While it has been in operation, the

official launch of Urban Light Church takes place on Sunday, December 1 with two services, beginning at 8 am and 9.45 am respectively.

Parents will be able to enjoy the services while their children are taken care of at Urban Kids, where they will receive age-specific ministry in a safe environment with a fun-filled programme under the supervision of welltrained volunteers.

The Urban Kids programme runs concurrently with both services.

There is also a parents’ lounge where parents with babies [aged zero to 24 months] can enjoy privacy and comfort and still be a part of the service.

Exciting events are lined up for the festive season; the annual Christmas Spectacular takes place on December 13, along with Christmas services on December 25 at 8 am and 9.45 am.

N an attempt to equip pupils for the fourth industrial revolution, learning centre e2 Young Engineers is providing educational enrichment programmes with theoretical training and practical implementation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (Stem) basics to children aged four to 14 years old.

The centre‘s programmes involve the integration of their custom designed K’nex, Algo Brix and LEGO bricks kits with scientific, mathematical and software engineering principles to make the material more edutainment (education plus entertainment) focused.

According to Pierre le Roux, the centre’s business development manager, the main goal of the programme is to illustrate engineering principles through experiments and demonstrations.

“Our students will learn Stem principles through intuitive study, develop their independent learning and improve their 21st century skills; like time planning, management skills, independent and creative thinking skills, etc,” said le Roux, who added that their programmes enhance and develop Early Childhood Development skills and school readiness.

According to Le Roux, research has shown that children participating in their programme achieve higher grades in all Stem subjects taught at school.

Speaking about the centre’s programmes, Le Roux said the e2 Young Engineers has six programmes based on Stem, and present extra-mural classes once a week at either after school clubs or in curriculum at schools or external learning centres.

The centre’s programmes include: Big Builders for Grades RR to R, which gets your child school ready; Bricks Challenge for the foundation phase, which develops 21st century skills; Algo Play, also for the foundation phase, where pupils learn the fundamentals of coding; Robo

Bricks [foundation phase] which cultivates algorithmic thinking; Galileo Technic for the intermediate phase, which helps pupils master the inner workings of machines and robots; and Robotics [intermediate phase], which teaches pupils to conquer robotics and software engineering.

“All of our programmes have a full curriculum which is aligned with the CAPS/IEB curriculum aims. We also have a specialised programme for autistic pupils and for children with ADD/ADHD,” said Le Roux.

Le Roux also explained why there was a need for an initiative centre like e2 Young Engineers, saying: “Skills like fine motor, spatial, problem solving, communication and critical thinking skills are lacking in general by children at all levels in schools.”

Furthermore, Le Roux said their programmes also includes Spiral Learning and Problem, Project and Product-Based Learning (PBL).

According to Le Roux, the programmes have been running for 11 years internationally and for six years (with more than 33 franchises) in South Africa.

“We also have an EDSA Foundation through which we intend implementing our programmes to previously disadvantaged schools through private sector funding.

“We have partnered with local organisations like the KZN Museum and WESSA uMngeni Valley in Howick,” said Le Roux.

After being with e2 Young Engineers for 18 months, the manager said he is excited about how the business has grown over the past year and said he is glad to see how pupils have developed different skills.

In speaking about the pupils’ strengths and weaknesses, Le Roux said there have been improvements in listening and communication skills. However, Le Roux said the pupils have also shown poor organisational skills, such as perseverance and creative skills.

The centre has received both positive and negative feedback from parents and pupils.

Some of the projects completed by pupils at the learning centre.

“In the positive, there has been improved academic performance at school. Pupils are playing and building constructively with the LEGO toys at home. There is also improved problem solving and decision making,” said Le Roux.

The centre manager also added that although the programme was explained to parents, the negative feedback comes with parents who still think the programme can be compared to LEGO Technic toys [not an educational programme] which can be commercially bought in stores.

The manager also highlighted the centre’s challenges, saying they include poor understanding of the programmes by the public and a lack of urgency by school management to allow these programmes to be presented at schools.

“Some of our goals include implementing our programmes at all schools in the Pietermaritzburg and Howick area, including at disadvantaged schools via our EDSA Foundation,” said Le Roux.

Speaking about the programme, Cyril Naidoo, the parent of Grade 3 Allandale Primary pupil Danicia Naidoo, said: “The young engineers programme has certainly supercharged Danicia’s interest in understanding of technology, innovation and science. The discipline and methodology has also positively transformed her into being more organised and focused in her daily life. She has a new thirst for understanding how things work and often thinks of alternative ways of dealing with issues.

“After just two years of part-time participation, she now understands motion, power transfer systems and propulsion. She has constructed a crane, elevator, drill, and a motorised car which she raced against her colleagues and won.

“The programme is an excellent career guide, a great general knowledge builder and a fantastic confidence builder. I certainly recommend the programme, not only to future engineers but to all pupils, as knowledge is power that no one can take away. Thank you to the dedicated team for helping with Danicia’s phenomenal development.”

ITH November being Men’s Health Awareness Month, the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) will be hosting a Shades of Blue men’s cancer awareness brunch on November 30 from 10 am at the Pietermaritzburg Collegians Sports Club.

The brunch will see urologist Dr Lucio Frutella as a guest speaker and Shannon Preston provide the entertainment.

Entry fee is a donation of R100 per person.

This month, CANSA is raising awareness of prostate cancer, the most common male cancer globally and locally.

According to Heidi Jansen, a CANSA community mobiliser, the National Cancer Registry shows

that South African men have a 1:19 risk of being diagnosed in their lifetime.

“Knowledge is power and can change the lives of men drastically if they are aware of early warning signs and symptoms of male cancers,”said Jansen, who added that men need to be proactive about their health and should recognise the warning signs. She emphasised that men also need to lead a healthy, balanced lifestyle and cut out lifes-

N order to raise funds, the SPCA will run a gift wrapping station at Hayfields Mall where the public can have their festive gifts wrapped in exchange for a donation.

The station will offer their services during December and the SPCA is looking for volunteers to man the station for four-hour long shifts.

Sandy Homan of the SPCA said that without the help of the public and fundraising initiatives, the SPCA is nothing.

“Shifts for the gift wrapping station from December 1 to December 12 run from 9 am to 1 pm. From December 13 to December 24 they will run from 8.30 am to 1.30 pm,” said Homan, who added that volunteers are

shown how to wrap and will also be told what is expected from them at the station.

She emphasised that anyone is welcome to volunteer and also encouraged individuals seeking to do their community service to participate in the SPCA gift wrapping initiative.

The SPCA will also host a Christmas Night Market to raise necessary funds on Saturday, December 8 at the Pietermaritzburg SPCA from 4 pm.

Speaking on the market, Homan said: “The event promises food, fun, live music, and more. Outside stall holders are welcome.”

SAPS seek parents of abandoned child FEVER REPORTER PIETERMARITZBURG’s Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit and SAPS Harburg are requesting assistance from the community in locating the parents of an abandoned child.

Mountain Rise Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joshua Maistry said Pietermaritz­burg’s FCS unit and SAPS Harburg are busy investigating a case where a child was found abandoned outside Entu-

thukweni Creche in Ozwathini, Appelsbosch, on October 1.

“Police are making an urgent appeal to members of the public with positive information, people who are aware of or know of someone who gave birth to a baby boy between September 24 and September 26, to contact the police urgently,” said Maistry.

Pianist gets personal at revival FEVER REPORTER

IANIST Christopher Duigan is set to present an entertaining and varied choice of his personal favourites for his November concert series entitled My Favourite Things, set to be performed in Pietermaritzburg and Howick over the end of November and early December.

The concerts in Pietermaritzburg will be held on Saturday, November 30, from 7.30 pm at Casa Mexicana on 35 Montgomery Drive in Athlone; and at the Tatham Art Gallery on Sunday, December 1, from 11.30 am.

The pianist will also be in Howick on Thursday, November 28, from 7 pm in the Amber Auditorium at a concert open to Amber residents and their

guests only.

“This compilation brings together many musical threads across a multitude of genres,” said Duigan, adding that it is a series of reflections on a multi-faceted concert pianist’s career.

“The programme will be presented loosely in mini-themes — such as ‘Composers I love to play’ and ‘The most compelling music I know’ — and the selection includes bold contrasts of melody, rhythm and harmony.

“This pianistic ‘tour de force’ also traverses the music of ragtime king Scott Joplin, and swaggers through a dollop of sultry South American tango, both Brazilian and Argentine,” said Duigan.

From the classical repertoire he in-

cludes Mozart’s Turkish Rondo, Rachmaninoff’s celebrated Prelude in C-sharp minor, music by Ravel, Beethoven, Chopin, and Schumann.

OUTH Arica is engulfed with heart-wrenching social ills that mostly affect women and children. That is why Miss Bachelorette South Africa 2020 finalist Siphuxolo Mazwi is taking a stand against acts of gender-based violence, rape, and femicide during the 16 Days of Activism campaign by hosting an outdoor aerobathon for charity.

The event aims to raise funds for a charity beneficiary identified by the Miss Bachelorette South Africa pageant, named ThyRest Restoration Home, which assists women from all socio-economic backgrounds who have been victims and survivors of sexual abuse; rape; and human trafficking and sex workers who want out.

Miss Bachelorette South Africa is a women empowerment project that is aimed at recognising and empowering mature, unmarried and independent women between the ages of 25 and 50 through philanthropy, fashion and beauty. This is the only

pageant in South Africa that focuses on the above mentioned category of women.

The aerobathon includes actionpacked activities such as aerobics, Zumba, step and kick boxing and it will be conducted by Planet Fitness.

Alongside the aerobathon, a selfdefence session will be conducted by African Combat systems and Prestbury SAPS to enlighten attendees on what is legal and what is not legal when it comes to self-defence when confronted with an attack.

Mazwi, a 28-year-old, was born in Mount Frere in the Eastern Cape and now lives in Pietermaritzburg. She is one of the top 16 finalists who are competing for the title of Miss Bachelorette South Africa 2020. She currently works for Agribusiness Development Agency as head of marketing and communication.

Quilting in support of victims of sexual abuse NTANDOYENKOSI DLAMINI >>ntandoyenkosi.dlamini@­ media24.com MIDLANDS Quilting Guild (MQG) recently hosted Trish Gillespie from the Jes Foord Foundation (JFF) Rape Crisis Centre at a lunch and ceremonial handover.

At the event, a donation of R13 222 was presented by MQG’s chairlady, Jane Renton, who did the actual quilting on the raffle quilt. A car boot full of items for the handbag project was also donated to JFF. According to Sarah Tilbury of MQG, in 2018 the guild decided to change their chosen charity to support JFF. “A collaboratively-assembled quilt was raffled at the The Witness Garden Show and raised almost R10 000,” said Tilbury.

Many people will recall the brutal gang rape suffered by Jes Foord while she was walking the family’s dogs with her father in 2008.

“But the true story lies in her turning

a horrid crime into an organisation that brings support and assistance to rape victims in various ways, so that the ordeal can help them progress from victim to survivor,” said Tilbury, who emphasised that, in the current era of this global criminal trend in every level of society, Foord is a shining star.

Tilbury said that this year, MQG continued to support JFF, collecting items at each meeting for inclusion in the rape and kiddie packs as well as collaborating once again on a quilt which was raffled.

“The quilt was aptly named Starlight Express [for bringing some light on dark situations] and put together by guild members in record time for a quilt of this size. JFF will remain the guild’s charity to support going forward.

“The guild is the oldest quilting guild in the country, and meets every third Thursday of the month in Hilton,” said Tilbury.

Culture of impunity reigns T

HE latest report from the Auditor-General into national and provincial departments and state-owned enterprises (SOEs) is enough to drive Buddhist monks to drink.

For the uninformed, the fifth precept of Buddhism — by which this lowly newspaperman lives — reads thus: “I undertake the training rule to abstain from fermented and distilled intoxicants which are the basis for heedlessness.”

But if Auditor-General Kimi Makwetu were to give a PowerPoint presentation on his 2018/19 findings to a priory of monks, all would have no choice but to delve into distilled intoxicants.

In his report, Makwetu told us about a serious regression in au-

dit outcomes.

He told us that only 26% of the institutions “managed to produce quality financial statements and performance reports that comply with legislation”, the financial health of those that had been audited “continues to be alarming”, and there was a “continued rise in fruitless and wasteful expenditure”.

An emerging risk, Makwetu said, was increasing litigation against departments. A third of them had claims exceeding 10% of the following year’s budget, meaning that money would have to be diverted from other places, such as service delivery. When it came to the implementation of key infrastructure, there was a persistent failure to achieve tar-

gets, progress reports were not reliable or credible and procurement irregularities were commonplace.

Furthermore, there was poor quality and a lot of waste and mismanagement.

“The widespread lack of consequences made the situation worse,” Makwetu remarked.

Shockingly, 72% of the audited entities “materially did not comply with legislation”, a two percent increase from the previous year.

Makwetu bemoaned the fact that supply chain management legislation was being ignored, despite his office having repeatedly raised red flags.

There was also a high incidence of contracts being awarded to employees and their families without declarations, and little action was taken against those who flouted rules prohibiting public servants from doing business with the state.

Unsurprisingly, not a single SOE got a clean audit — there was actually a regression in most instances.

Makwetu described this year’s overall outcomes as “the worst they have ever been”.

The situation in the provinces was also bleak, with most either regressing or showing negligible improvement.

Even Gauteng, one of the most well-run provinces with a record of good audit opinions, went backwards.

The Western Cape defied the national trend, something Makwetu attributed to the provincial leaders and administrative heads “instilling a culture of accountability and good governance, and implementing initi-

atives to strengthen this culture in a deliberate manner”.

The Free State — a perennial underperformer in this report and the municipal audits that come out at a different time of the year — was again a poor performer, albeit with a slight improvement.

Makwetu attributed the poor performance to “the leadership’s lack of accountability for government spending”, and “the political and administrative leadership’s slow or no response [to previous recommendations], as well as their failure to create a culture that promoted an accountable, effective and efficient” government.

The picture painted by the report is one of a government system that simply does not care if public funds are spent efficiently, are used for what they are supposed to be used for and actually improve lives. It shows the symptoms of a political and administrative system that is broken and in which the culture of impunity reigns.

What hits you is the blatant disregard for serving the people. It would be one thing if the failures were isolated, but the dysfunction seems systemic.

Makwetu’s report came out at the same time as the Institute of Internal Auditors SA’s corporate governance index 2019 report, which was not very complimentary about the regard for ethics in the public sector.

The institute’s report found that only 14% of internal auditors in national government who were canvassed believed that “ethics was an important part of their organisation-

al culture”.

Only 31% at provincial level, 23% at district level and 37% at local government level believed this was the case. In SOEs, 42% believed their organisations valued ethics.

This is compared with 78% at listed companies and 72% at privately held companies.

Houston, we have problem here.

Year after year, Makwetu and his predecessor Terence Nombembe have hit us over the head with this perturbing information. Each year, the situation just seemed to get worse, especially during the wasted decade.

Yet nothing changed.

You would be forgiven for believing that Makwetu and his troops did this exercise for fun; that it is just a way for them to stretch their nerdy brains.

It is to their credit that they don’t get demoralised.

South Africa is blessed with institutions that produce really good data and research.

We just need the will to use it. In areas where wrong has been identified, there needs to be a determination to set things right.

The elected leaders have a mandate and the power to use reports such as this one to make sure that they are not shamed in the same way next year. But, wait a minute, do they even have shame?

As for this lowly newspaperman, it is becoming harder and harder to adhere to the fifth precept under these circumstances.

No to halloween at schools On October 29, a local primary school sent out the following WhatsApp notice to parents: “Our foundation phase teachers have arranged a Halloween Fun Day/ Picnic for our foundation phase pupils (Grade R to Grade 3). Please assist in making this day a successful one by sending pupils dressed in a ‘Halloween costume’ (mask/costumes made from recyclables). A pair of jeans, a t-shirt and a mask will be acceptable as well. Please send a picnic basket and a mat for your child/ward.”

This is horrible! Firstly because the express consent of the parent has not been obtained before the child can participate.

Secondly, they have the audacity to request our assistance to make it a success

when we detest this. Then, to cause further annoyance, it goes on to give a directive on how the child must be dressed and the additional items that are required. When I contacted the school to voice my objection I was told (after some debate) that it is an activity. I hold the view that this is a celebration because the essential ingredients are present — child is to wear a mask, casual clothing and bring a picnic basket. Why must little children “Grade R to Grade 3”participate in such harmful satanic customs? Surely the teachers must take cognisance of the fact that children come from different faiths, beliefs and religions and it is offensive for some to indulge in such events.

The Church of Satan marks Halloween as a very important day in their cal-

endar for devil worship. From a Christian standpoint such activities are contemptuous.

Halloween is celebrated on a massive scale in America, Canada and England.

It is foolish to mimic whatever they do!

There are serious issues in our society that need to be addressed rather than waste our energy on these worthless traditions. Celebrations of Satanism and Paganism must not be allowed in our schools and the Department of Education must intervene to ensure that the innocent little minds of our children are not poisoned. May the Almighty God help us all to discern between good and evil.

Some feedback regarding election posters: here, in Cramond, it has been removed, finally, some eight months after the deadline set by Msunduzi Municipality. Well done, Mother Nature. (Proof can be located at the base of almost every telephone pole).

However, one poster, that of Cyril Ramaphosa, “overseeing” the fortunes of the Cramond community from atop a telephone pole, still remained as recently as last week.

I know, because his smiling face greeted me every time I exited, or entered, my property, right at my front gate.

This poster disappeared, practically overnight, without a trace.

Suddenly, I can see clearly now: the incredible ingenuity of the ANC

in taking advantage of almost any situation, such as other commodities doing the groundwork, (in this instance, mother nature, therefore, pun intended), then stepping in towards the end, doing the balance of the work, and in so doing, saving much needed time, energy, funds, and most notably, brownie points, by claiming the accolades.

Proof of this, (possibly a radical statement), can be found in the words of a spokesperson for an ANC run Municipality, who boldly claimed, (through this very newspaper), that the City of Pietermaritzburg is ready and able to deal with any disaster, then in the same breath, admit that they work in close conjunction with the Gift of the Givers Foundation when they are short

of foodstuffs, blankets, tents,etc.

In short, the most basic supplies of any disastrous event.

This shortage of basic needs was very evident during recent, disastrous storms.

A cunning “forked tongue” at play, or depending on others to do their work for them?

And guess whose delegates are strutting their stuff, claiming the accolades, in disaster areas?

The examples of this “ brilliant strategy” are plentiful.

Nevertheless, thank you to the Gift of the Givers foundation for being there, when South Africa needs them.

Construction sector in crisis FRANK MEINTJIES

FOR decades, big construction companies were seen everywhere — Group Five, Murray & Roberts, WBHO, Aveng and Raubex.

After 45 years of trading on the JSE, Group Five filed for business rescue in March 2019.

In June, Probuild Construction Group applied to be placed in business rescue as it was financially distressed and unable to pay all of its debts.

Basil Read, Liviero Group and Esor Construction have all been placed in business rescue. LBC Lenco Construction applied for debt-freezing agreements, but has since been liquidated.

The construction industry is notoriously cyclical, but there is a current mix of a depressed economy, high levels of national debt, uncertainty and low infrastructure-spending, and contracts are drying up.

Thousands of jobs have been lost, 8 000 at Group Five alone.

The past nine years have proved to be ruinous. Construction companies that are South Africa-orientated were badly affected from mid-June 2018 to mid-June this year.

Marc Ter Mors, the head of equity research at Johannesburg-based SBG Securities, said: “In South Africa, volumes are low, pricing is under pressure and companies are taking on more risk to win contracts, so margins are thin and that hits cash flow.

There are no real segments to hide in.”

Murray & Roberts anticipated the crash and sold its building and infrastructure units in 2016 to move into international businesses focused on projects like underground mining, and oil and gas.

Although M&R’s market valuation is a fraction of what it once was, the stock has gained 44% in the past year amid takeover interest from 40% shareholder, Aton GmbH. The industry was on a high in the

build-up to the FIFA Soccer World Cup in South Africa in 2010, which required major national infrastructure spend, particularly on new stadiums.

However, the Competition Commission had already started to investigate collusion in the industry.

The Commission settled with 15 firms in 2013, while Group Five was granted immunity for co-operating.

President Cyril Ramaphosa recently said that although government’s infrastructure spending had slowed, the state would contribute R100 billion into a fund over 10 years.

The plan is to use this to get financing from both private and state-owned companies to reboot the industry.

Meanwhile, the FTSE/JSE Africa Construction & Materials Index is down 27% in the past 12 months, compared to a six percent drop in the FTSE/ JSE Africa All Shares Index. There is also a risk that if South Africa’s local construction industry is wrecked, future building projects will become more ex-

pensive, Ter Mors said.

“As South Africa depletes its capacity to build its own infrastructure, when the cycle turns again, it will be forced to rely on international companies and their pricing,” the analyst said.

By way of example, Aveng was among the top 40 largest companies by market value on the JSE in 2010, but now has a market value of R582 million from a peak of R28 billion in 2008.

Then, as the Jacob Zuma presidency took hold and the money that was meant for infrastructure was stolen, the big construction industry went into freefall.

But in recent years another problem has been putting a nail in the coffin of many of the smaller companies that subcontract to the large construction groups: unpaid debts.

Recent business failures and job losses in the sector have been blamed on the non-payment or late payment of contractors.

Cut & Edge

As at September 2019, the government owed construction and building industry contractors about R5,5 billion. This is according to an article in Moneyweb ‘Government owes construction contractors R5,5bn’ (September 19).

The article quotes Roy Mnisi, executive director of Master Builders South Africa (MBSA), as saying that late payment or non-payment by government is the single greatest challenge facing the industry.

Despite government ministers and Ramaphosa’s talking about the issue, nothing has been done to ensure that contractors are paid within 30 days after invoicing, as required by National Treasury regulations. In most cases, the work has been completed but the government doesn’t pay.

The president of the Black Business Council says that contractors are scared to exercise their legal rights against big companies because no further contracts will be forthcoming.

SAPS: ‘Avoid carrying large amounts of cash this season’

N September, the South African Police Service (SAPS) announced that commercial crime increased by more than 14% this past period, with 83 823 cases reported.

These crimes include fraud, embezzlement, corruption, forgery, money laundering, and certain cybercrimes.

Fidelity ADT KwaZulu-Natal District Manager Vaughan Pillay said: “It does seem that business-related crimes involving physical force declined for the year being reported on by the police, but that does not mean that business owners can now relax and drop their guard.” Pillay said there is a continuing need for preventative measures to deter any criminal activity.

Adding to this, communications officer at a KZN police station, Captain Linzi Smith said: “Business robberies are on the increase and, with the festive season upon us, [it is] obvious businesses and the community are at risk of becoming victims.” “If we can please make the community more vigilant about putting equipment and items away and not [leaving them] visible outside their premises. “During the day and at night, try keeping security gates locked if you are leaving doors open.

If you have security guards, they need to be more vigilant with vehicles driving slowly past the premises,” she said.

SMITH OFFERED SOME SAFETY TIPS FOR BUSINESS OWNERS­: - Keep a low balance in the cash register.

- Place excess money in a safe or deposit it

as soon as possible.

- Stay alert. Know who is in your business and where they are. Watch out for people who are hanging around without buying anything.

Also, be aware of suspicious activity outside your place of business.

Write down license numbers and vehicle details of suspicious vehicles if they are visible from the inside of your business.

- Make sure the sales counter can be seen clearly. Don’t put up advertisements, flyers, displays, signs, posters, or other items on windows or doors that might obstruct the view from inside of your business.

- Try to greet customers as they enter your business. Look them in the eye and ask them if they need help. Your attention can discourage a potential robber.

- Keep your business well-lit, inside and outside. Employees should report any burnedout lights to the business owner, supervisor or manager. Keep trees and bushes trimmed so they don’t block any outdoor lights.

- If you see something suspicious, call the police at 10111. Never try to handle a situation yourself.

- Make sure important signs stay posted. For example, the front door should bear signs that say, “Clerk Cannot Open the Time Lock Safe.”

- Don’t just open the door if someone calls to be buzzed in. Often staff will open doors without checking that the person is there for legitimate reasons. This information needs to be cascaded to all staff working at a business premises.

- Staying vigilant at all times can help pre-

WITH Black Friday taking place this Friday, followed by the festive season which sees stokvel payouts and 13th cheques being issued, SAPS would like to warn the community about the dangers of carrying excessive cash on their person.

Speaking further on this, Captain Charlene Van Der Spuy, corporate communications officer at a KZN SAPS office, said: “It is almost that time of the year where members of the community are looking forward to the festive season and spending their hard-earned money with their loved ones.

Regrettably, this is also the time in which criminal elements will attempt to continue with their evil plans, including committing crimes such as robberies.”

“As a precautionary measure, police in the province would like to caution members of the community, particularly those who have been saving money through stokvel groupings or societies, to avoid carrying a lot of cash.”

They state that two crime types remain prevalent. In the first case, victims are followed out of banks after a cash withdrawal has been made. In other incidences, consumers are followed after withdrawing money at an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) to their residences, places of work, vehicles, or any other place where it is easy to rob them.

“Small business owners are also at risk, particularly when drawing cash to pay weekly wages,” said the captain.

“In most robberies, robbers are armed and will resort to violence if the victim resists. These kinds of robberies are not limited to urban areas, but also occur in rural communities.

“There are safer ways to do transac-

vent a traumatic incident.

In the event of a business robbery, follow the below advice: - If your business is being robbed, put your safety first. Your personal safety is more important than money or merchandise.

- Don’t talk except to answer the robber’s questions.

- Cooperate with the robber for your own safety and the safety of others. Comply with a robber’s demands and remain calm and think clearly. Make mental notes of the robber’s physical description and other observations important to the police.

- If you have a silent alarm and can reach it without being noticed, use it. Otherwise, wait until the robber leaves.

- Be careful. Most robbers are just as nervous as you are.

- Prevent surprises; keep your hands in sight at all times.

- Don’t make any sudden moves.

- Don’t chase or follow the robber out of your place of business but do get, if possible, a direction of travel; vehicle colour, make, and description; and a description of the robber.

- Call 10111 immediately. Do not call a supervisor, manager or owner first. Give the information to police as soon as possible.

She advised that business should keep their outside gates and office gates closed and locked if possible.

Smith noted that during patrols, officers often see businesses that keep their main gates open. She says this make you an easier target for crime, and can add to an increase of crime in the area.

SAPS PROVIDED THE COMMUNITY WITH THE FOLLOWING SAFETY TIPS: · Carry as little cash as possible. · Consider the convenience of paying your accounts electronically (consult your bank to find out about other available options). · Never make your bank visits public, even to people close to you. · Vary the days and times on which you deposit cash. · Do not openly display money you are depositing while standing in the bank queue. · Avoid carrying moneybags, briefcases or openly displaying your deposit receipt book. · It is advisable to identify another branch nearby that you can visit to ensure that your banking pattern is not easily recognisable. · If the amount of cash you are regularly depositing is increasing as your business grows, consider using the services of a cash management company. · Refrain from giving wages to your contract or casual labourers in full view of the public; rather make use of wage accounts that can be provided by your bank.

TIPS FOR STOKVEL GROUPINGS: · Refrain from making cash deposits of club members’ contributions on high-risk days (e.g. Monday after month end). · Ensure persons depositing club cash contributions or making withdrawals are accompanied by another club member. · A stokvel savings club or burial society can arrange for members to deposit cash directly into the club’s account instead of collecting cash contributions. · Arrange for the club’s payout to be electronically transferred into each club member’s personal account or accounts of their choice.

Changes: 2019 Ford Everest 2.0 biturbo 4x4 Limited GORDON HALL

T

HE third-generation Everest, based on Ranger, was facelifted in 2018 with revised front styling and new 2.0-litre, Biand single-turbo, four-cylinder diesel engines paired with 10-speed automatic transmissions. Other changes included Autonomous Emergency Braking, powered liftgate for Limited, new wheels, and Sync3 on most models. Interior changes include more soft touch materials and darker, upmarket colour schemes.

Limited 4x4 tops the South African range and, powered by the Raptor version of the 2.0 engine, arrives with more safety kit and standard features than you are likely to get for just under R800 000 in most other seven-seat, 4x4, SUVs. Safety equipment: Seven airbags; ABS with EBD; ESP; hill launch; hill descent; emergency braking warning; adaptive cruise control with forward alert, distance alert, collision mitigation and HUD; roll-over mitigation; trailer sway control; adaptive load control; lane keeping aids and blind spot monitoring with cross traffic alert.

Nice to haves: 230-volt power point; key-

Unlike Rangers, Everest provides fulltime awd thanks to a central differential that distributes power fore and aft as needed.

During easy driving, like on dry asphalt, 90 to 95% stays with the rear wheels but, as demands change, more is sent forward.

Most off-road challenges can be met by using the terrain selector with its mud/grass/ snow or sand settings. But when things get technical, select 4Lo and Rock Crawl. When the chips are down, engage rear diff lock.

Because recent rains had washed away much of the binding soil, the stony hill on our local forest trail posed more of a challenge

than usual. But it was still no match for 225 mm of clearance, 4Lo and Rock Crawl.

Regular adventurers will be pleased to know that practical, 265/60R18, M+S tyres are a no-cost option on Limited.

Then there’s Everest’s all-coil suspension; independent in front, Watts linkage at the back and revised spring and damper settings.

It works well. The rippled and jouncy road past the veggie farms barely fazed it, even at low speeds that usually bring out the worst in any setup. We were impressed. It comes very close to ride quality provided by expensive, air-sprung offerings. The new ten-speed automatic, on the other hand, felt rather ordinary. It works OK but not impressively and tended to hunt between gears quite easily.

We hear the marketing logic behind so many ratios but suspect that it’s more about a numbers race than any real advantage. We would be happier if Ford just dropped four gears and tightened up its responses.

Apart from that, not much is new. Third row seating still accepts adults of medium height but they’d better be reasonably supple; there’s lots of storage; cargo space is plentiful and, all-‘round, it’s a very decent

HE last of Audi SA’s old-spec A1s eased off its showroom floor in April, making way for: · A new face · New nomenclature · New, add-on option packages · Two new engines and one power boost.

The front view presents squarer headlamps; a more prominent grille with larger dummy vents on either side; revised lower intake and, just below the bonnet, three air slits going nowhere; just evoking memories of the firebreathing original quattro.

Around back you will find a redesigned tailgate, new lights and a lower panel with two more fake air inlets.

The interior is most changed of all with new steering wheel, reshaped instrument binnacle, strip air vents and a neatly built-in touchscreen to replace the old, tabletstyled device on top of the dash.

Toeing the corporate line, A1 adopts Audi’s new number codes denoting power and torque output ranges – “25” for little ones and “55” on muscular A8s. Heavyweights with R or S in their titles are exempted.

AS FOR OPTION PACKAGES, THESE WILL IN FUTURE BE FUNCTION­ORIENTED TO SIMPLIFY CHOICES: · “Comfort” adds cruise control, dual-zone automatic air conditioning and boot hardware, · “Technology” offers 10.25” virtual cockpit, smartphone interface and improved sound kit, · “Sport” provides sports seats, D-shaped steering wheel, black headlining and Drive Select,

Apart from the 999-cc triple gaining a power boost from 70 kW to 85 with lugging power increased from 160 Nm to 200, the 1.4 TFSI motor makes way for a new 1.5 TFSI developing 110 kW and 250 Nm while the “40” model gets an uprated 2.0-litre mill making 147 kW and 320 Nm. SA’s A1 model range for 2020 presently consists of Standard, Advanced and S Line versions of 30 TFSI and 35 TFSI with seven-speed dual clutch gearboxes and the 40 TFSI, with six-speed S Tronic, available in S Line only.

Standard models provide 15” alloy wheels; spacesaver spare; tyre pressure monitoring; ESC; hill start; standard suspension; start-and-stop with regenerative braking; halogen headlights; rain- and light sensors; underbody protection; powered and heated wing mirrors; digital instruments; fabric seats; 8.8” media centre with six speakers, voice recognition and Bluetooth interface; manual air conditioning; height adjustable front seats and three i-Size mounting sets for baby chairs.

Advanced specification adds 16” wheels to the 30 model or 17-inch versions to the 35, along with different bumpers, door sill inserts and colours for diffuser, spoiler, grille and air intakes.

S Line adds sportier suspension and different appearance items.

The new 1498 cc, EA211 EVO-series motor uses a variable geometry turbocharger, electronically controlled charge-air cooling, 350-bar injectors and an integrated exhaust manifold. VW/Audi claims 10% efficiency gains versus the previous 1.4-litre unit and consumption reduced by about one litre per 100 kilometres.

The body, built on a newer platform, is 75 mm longer on a wheelbase stretched by 94 mm, as wide as before and stands 7 mm lower. What this means is greater comfort for backseat passengers around six feet tall and 65 litres more boot space. This is 760 mm long and a metre wide between the arches. Lifting height is about 69 cm and the well is eight cm deep with the baseboard on its upper setting or 18 when lowered. Maximum capacity is 335 litres. The spare is a spacesaver.

Glass area seemed more generous than we remembered it, HVAC and audio controls are neatly set out and easy to use, the engine offers all the power a family person could conceivably need, it turns on a button and the whole package feels solid. We also appreciated the

“proper” hand brake and resting pad for the left foot.

Those in the back, while finding more space than before, might whine about not having seatback pockets or an armrest and regarding rather small door bins.

Those in front aren’t much bigger while the oddments box under the console armrest is tiny.

On the whole, however, this A1 is solid, compact without being claustrophobic, goes like a student after free beer, is decently economical, stops well, steers easily and feels just right.

PUBLIC schools across SA close on December 4 and the Automobile Association (AA) urges all motorists to prepare now for what is traditionally the busiest and most dangerous time to be on South African roads.

“Statistics show more people are on our roads during the holiday break, and more people die in car crashes during this festive period than any other time.

“Preparing your vehicle ahead of the holidays is important, but so is ensuring that you have a positive attitude behind the wheel, especially if you are going to be travelling long distances,” said the AA. The association says all vehicles — including trailers and caravans — must be roadworthy and thoroughly checked before embarking on a long journey. It says these vehicles should be in good enough condition for a round trip to your destination and back home again.

“If your vehicle needs a service, book it in as soon as possible, as spaces get filled closer to the holiday season and you may not get a slot. If this happens, you run the risk of leaving on a long journey with a vehicle that may not be as sound as you think. And, don’t forget your trailers and caravans. Check tyres, spare wheels, nuts, bolts and axles. Don’t risk your holiday plans by having a towed vehicle break down due to bad planning or nonservicing,” warned the AA. If you have a vehicle which is out of warranty, or which has outlived its service plan, pick up a product that will cover your high-risk maintenance and service needs.

In addition, the AA says road death statistics show that around 92% of all vehicle fatalities in the country are a result of human behaviour, rather than vehicle, road or environmental conditions.

“These numbers show that drivers need to adjust their attitude when they are behind the wheel. Put your mobile phones away while driving, adhere to the speed limit, obey the rules of the road, and importantly, be

courteous to other drivers and enjoy the journey,” said the AA. THE ASSOCIATION OFFERS THE FOLLOWING QUICK CHECKLIST FOR MOTORISTS: · Plan your route, including stops, and ensure you make provision to stop every 200km or every two hours to rest, refuel and refresh. · Look at the planning of your trip and avoid the rush days when there is bound to be heavier traffic on the roads. · Buckle up. · Obey all the rules of the road, and drive to the conditions. · Remember, everyone has a right to be on the road. · Make sure of arrangements for overnight accommodation before you leave. · Inspect tyres (including the spare tyre) and make sure they have sufficient tread for the road ahead. · Check you have all the necessary tools to change a tyre if needed, including a red warning triangle. · Download the AA app on your mobile phone for easy use in case of an emergency. · Focus on the road and on other drivers. Distracted driving diminishes reaction time. · Plan a route off the beaten path and experience a bit more of South Africa than the regular routes. Take time and arrive at your destination calm and rested. · Another good tip is always to have water, a first aid kit, and a mobile phone charger in your car for emergencies.

Cooking ‘Fever’ishly — brinjal and mushroom lasagne INGREDIENTS White sauce ½ onion, peeled 5 black peppercorns 2 bay leaves 500ml milk 30g butter 45ml white bread flour 5ml nutmeg 125ml mature cheddar cheese, grated Mushrooms 2 punnets mixed mushrooms, chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 red pepper, chopped (optional) 30ml butter 4-6 sun-dried tomatoes in vinaigrette,

chopped Generous handful of fresh basil, chopped To finish 4 medium brinjals, thinly sliced and salted Olive oil Grated cheddar or pecorino cheese for sprinkling METHOD Preheat the oven to 180°C. Grease an ovenproof dish with non-stick spray.

1. White sauce: Heat the onion, peppercorns, bay leaves and milk to just below the boil. Remove from the heat and cool. Strain and discard the solids.

2. In a separate saucepan melt the butter, then stir in the flour to form a smooth paste.

Add the milk slowly, stirring continuously while bringing to the boil. Season with the nutmeg then add the cheese. Set aside.

3. Mushrooms: Fry the mushrooms, garlic and pepper [if using] in the butter until soft. Add the sun-dried tomatoes and basil.

4. To finish: Rinse the salt off the brinjals and pat dry. Arrange on a baking sheet and sprinkle oil over. Bake until soft but not brown or crispy.

5. Arrange a layer of brinjal in the ovenproof dish, then a layer of mushrooms, followed by white sauce. Repeat until all the ingredients have been used, ending with white sauce.

6. Sprinkle the cheese over and bake for 20-30 minutes or until the cheese has melted.

Wrapping up a year on the trail T

HE KZN Trail Running Summer Series wraps up at Hilton College on Sunday, December 1.

A perennial favourite with trail enthusiasts from the Midlands, ‘Maritzburg and beyond, the stunning Hilton College Estate trails never disappoint.

Not normally accessible to the public, the event is a great opportunity for lovers of the outdoors to explore the aloe-studded grassland, dense valley bushveld and lush plantations on purpose-built and beautifully maintained trails.

The first two events of the Summer Series, held at Dusi Trails and Honey Trails respectively, were hugely successful and enjoyed by all who took part.

A blistering African summers day in the bushveld was relished by participants at Dusi Trails while those who took part at Honey Trails were relieved to do so in cooler, albeit muddy, conditions. Trail junkies will inform you that any weather is great weather to be out on the trails!

Three distances; of 7 km, 12 km or 20 km; will be available to choose from at Hilton College.

The 7km, which is gentle and doesn’t descend into the valley, is suitable for children (KZNTR’s recommendation: never run further than your age) and novices and is great for full family fun!

The 12km poses more of a challenge, with a couple of climbs and more technical terrain, while the 20km is a proper test to even the most seasoned trail runner. Walkers are welcome on both the 7 km and 12 km courses.

KZN Trail Running places an emphasis on full family involvement and the atmosphere in the race village around the start/finish area is always vibey and festive with plenty to see, eat, drink and do!

Crystal, who is a rhythmic gymnastic and ballet star, will be competing at the DuGym Cup, being held from December 5 to December 7, which will feature world-class rhythmic gymnasts.

Her participation at the event follows after Crystal won gold [Level 10/U15] at the SA Gym Games in September.

Speaking of Crystal’s love for gymnastics and ballet, her mother, Sonja Viljoen, said the teen started doing rhythmic gymnastics at the age of five.

“At this time she was attending only one-hour classes a week,” said Viljoen, who went on to say that Crystal started ballet in 2014 and was instructed in both Cecchetti and Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) ballet.

Speaking about Crystal’s achievements so far, Viljoen said that in 2014 she won the Gauteng Championships for Level 1 and Level 2. She passed the High Performance test and received senior Gauteng colours and a bronze medal.

“Crystal also formed part of the KZN Rhythmic Gymnastics team that performed at the World Gymnaestrada , which was held in Dornbirn, Austria earlier this year. This was an amazing opportunity for her to meet gymnasts from all over the world,” said Viljoen.

Furthermore, Viljoen said another magical time for Crystal was when she formed part of the dance troupe from Art of Motion for the Sleeping Beauty pantomime in 2015, directed by Janice Honeyman, at the tender age of nine.

“This spectacular production ran to sold-out performances over seven weeks in the Mandela Theatre in Johannesburg. She performed alongside Chris Jaftha, who played the very handsome Prince; Michelle Botha: Timothy Moloi; Nicole Fortuin; and Tobie Cronjé,” said a proud Viljoen.

In order for Crystal to attend the Summer School of the American Academy of Ballet in New York in 2020, she had to perform at the American Performance Awards, held at Epworth School recently, where she was awarded a gold medal and the Mignon Furman Award by the adjudicator.

In speaking about the upcoming event, Crystal said: “I was very excited to hear of the invitation to compete in Dubai and it is a great honour.

“I don’t know what to expect but I am hoping to achieve my personal best scores,”said Crystal, adding that it will be a huge honour to compete on the same stage as Olympians and world champions.

This is a complimentary service for parents who are participating, allowing them to hit the trails with peace of mind.

Children will be under the supervision of experienced child minders who will provide them with stimulating entertainment and games.

ARITZBURG United’s sheer hunger to succeed, not least from hulking striker Judas Moseamedi, shattered the possibility of there being a glamour Telkom Knockout final between Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns this year.

The mighty ’Downs team did their part by comfortably getting past Golden Arrows in Durban on Saturday, but Eric Tinkler’s gutsy warriors from the Midlands had other ideas and came up with the right attitude and tactics to pull off a fabulous 2-1 win over Chiefs in the second semi-final in Nelspruit yesterday.

When the final takes place at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on December 14, the “Team of Choice” will be bidding to clinch their first trophy in roughly 15 years of professional football.

“We have been working hard and we did the job today,” said proud man-of-thematch Moseamedi, who scored a goal in each half to cancel out the single from Chiefs’ Yagan Sasman midway through

the second half at a packed Mbombela Stadium.

Added the equally-delighted Tinkler: “It would have been an injustice if we did not win the game. “I thought in the first half we performed exceptionally well. We should have been 3-0 up by half-time. We kept the door open to them and they got an equaliser, but overall we dominated the game. We looked like we were the team who were playing at home today.

“We could really have slaughtered them with all the chances we had in the game, but overall I am happy.

“We applied ourselves exceptionally well. We need to do the same against Sundowns in the final.” Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp said his team had simply failed to rise to the occasion.

Tinkler’s tactical plan was bound to be very important against more illustrious opponents, who were enjoying home advantage too, and the former Bafana Bafana star opted for a fairly conservative approach that was underlined by the rare deployment of Moseamedi as the team’s

lone striker. There was also the sudden scrapping of the Midlands club’s fledgling policy of using reserve goalkeeper Bongani Mpandle for Cup contests. In came firstchoice “stopper” Richard Ofori and, in addition to that, there was the unusual placing of Keagan Buchanan and Micah Lea’Alafa in the engine-room for the big game.

The obvious task for beefy Moseamedi was to give Chiefs’ changed central defence a torrid time in the box, while United’s regular strike combination of Thabiso Khutumela and Jeremy Brockie had to watch from the bench from the first whistle. In a game that involved plenty of long balls on both sides of the pitch, Tinkler’s plan looked spot-on in the 30th minute when an opportunistic Moseamedi took full advantage of Chiefs central defender Daniel Cardoso’s poor back pass and put United in front against expectation. There was little chance of Amakhosi goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma making up for Cardoso’s untimely blunder as Moseamedi’s move was unstoppable.

The mighty Chiefs following could not believe their eyes again as the United striker almost made it 2-0 minutes later, as did midfielder Mxolisi Kunene just before the interval. At the other end, there was some hope for the home fans when United ’keeper Ofori and defender Rushine de Reuck were called on a few occasions to stop the Chiefs attackers in their tracks, including a dangerous foray involving Leonardo Castro five minutes from half-time.

The fightback expected from Chiefs in the second half did not yield immediate rewards and, as time went on, the tens of thousands of Amakhosi fans were clearly getting worried and they must have been very relieved when United midfielder Daylon Claasen and Moseamedi fluffed chances before the 70th minute. Chiefs thought they were right back in it when Sasman scored the equaliser in the 78th minute, but Moseamedi had the final say by converting a pass from substitute Bandile Shandu in the 85th minute.

The upset was complete.

Judas Moseamedi was the hero for Maritzburg United on Sunday by scoring both goals in a 2-1 win over Kaizer Chiefs in the semi-finals of the Telkom Knockout in Nelspruit.
