A 37-YEAR-OLD woman, Nazneen Moolla from Scottsville, has set out to prove that no matter what the circumstances are, you can always make a difference. She is now working with White’s (Women Holistically Interacting to Empower) KZN Top Model SA and Project Life Ambassador search.

The philanthropic pageant is the first of its kind and encourages its participants to engage and give back to the community. Moolla, who was a finalist, said that she was inspired to participate in the pageant after she felt like she was not doing enough with her life.

“Being 37 with two children while being married to a businessman, I felt like I could use my blessings and platform to give back to my community. I am also at an age where I have come to terms with and accepted my flaws which have been the building blocks of my strength,” said Moolla.

Since embarking on her pageantry journey, Moolla has hosted various feeding schemes, held motivational talks for young woman, delivered everyday necessary items including food and toiletries to those in need, and has made guest appearances at various events. Marvelling at the feeling it gives her, Moolla claimed that she

never knew how naturally giving came to her until she started this journey.

“I needed a platform — an opportunity to have a positive influence in my community. My catch phrase throughout my journey has always been #makingafabuloustomorrow. I believe that small acts by millions of people can transform the world,”said Moolla.

Crediting the pageant to that of a life-changing journey, Moolla stated that she has become the woman her younger self always wanted to be through the pageant.

Moolla won first princess on Saturday and won the award for most charity involvement.

Their invitation to host Christian super group Planetshakers, sent in the email, was accepted, resulting in the band visiting Pietermaritzburg for the first time in its history.

Converge is a youth group that seeks to encourage young people to improve their lives, inspire, motivate and empower them through powerful ministry.

Converge leader Pillay said that Planetshakers embodied and personified through their music,the same values that Converge stood for and that when he saw on his social media account that they were doing a tour across the world, he instantly sent the band manager a message requesting them to tour Pietermaritzburg.

“I told them we always have to go out of the area to see major concerts and that we would like to host them for one night of worship for the people of Maritzburg,” said Pillay.

Planetshakers are a globally acclaimed Christian group known for songs like The Anthem and Nothing is Impossible and are currently on their worldwide tour, called The Legacy Tour.

Pillay said that he was very excited once they agreed to his request, stating that he wanted this to be a legacy church night.

OLICE are on the lookout for three men believed to be involved in the assault and hijacking of a man on Jaipur Road, Northdale on Thursday night.

According to a member of the Sector 4 community watch group, who were on the scene after the matter had been reported on the group, one of the three men approached the driver of the vehicle while one kept watch and the other threatened the man’s wife to be quiet.

“The one suspect threatened to shoot the man’s wife when she came out of the kitchen while the other kept watch. The third suspect assaulted the man with a gun, hitting him on his head.

They then jumped into their vehicle and drove off onto Bombay Road,” said a Sector 4 com-

munity member.

The member also confirmed that a shot was fired but that no one was injured.

According to the member, a phone was left in the vehicle when the three men made off with the car and was being tracked by the Sector 4 team until the phone was switched off at 2 pm the next day.

The man, whose vehicle was stolen, was rushed to Northdale Hospital where he received four stitches due to the wound from being hit with the gun.

Captain Gay Ebrahim, spokesperson for the Mountain Rise Police Station, confirmed that a case of hijacking and assault was opened and that investigations are underway.

“The vehicle that was hijacked is a foreign vehicle and we have noticed that these foreign vehicles seem to be in high demand,” said Ebrahim.

UKZN athlete and leader drowns while swimming at Midmar Dam KERUSHUN PILLAY A UNIVERSITY of KwaZulu-Natal student drowned in Midmar Dam on Saturday.

Sizophila Mahlobo (24), a keen sportsman who was chairperson of the university’s athletics club, drowned on Saturday afternoon when he and some friends swam to retrieve their canoe.

He was declared dead on scene.

Mahlobo, of Esikhawini, near Empangeni, was pursuing a Master of Science degree in Hydrology at the Pietermaritzburg campus, where his research interest was water quality. ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak, said paramedics and members of the SAPS search and rescue worked to recover Mahlobo’s body. “Bystanders on the scene explained to emergency workers that they swam out to retrieve a canoe [and then] noticed one of their friends were missing.”

He said the circumstances surrounding the incident would be investigated by police.

Friends and colleagues said Mahlobo was a long-distance runner for UKZN’s athletics club. He was the club’s treasurer before he was made chairperson this year.

Andrew Stewart, the vice chairperson of the athletics club, said he had heard of the incident on Saturday via UKZN’s sports union. He said Mahlobo had nominated him last year to be vice chairperson.

“I would never have accepted it if not for him. He was by far the best leader I’d seen; I was always impressed by the way he dealt with things.

“He was quite a sportsman, and he had a lot of time for people. He was a very organised leader.”

Ironically, it seems Phila’s journey and the aquatic side were intertwined, for he succumbed to death while canoeing at the

Midmar Dam. “We will miss you on the road comrade, indeed we will feel the pain of running down kilometers without you around. A life well lived! Phumule ngoxolo mfethu (rest in peace, brother.)” Attempts to contact Mahlobo’s family were unsuccessful yesterday.

UKZN said it was waiting for a full report of the circumstances.

It sent condolences to his family and team-mates.

RE we going to be moved? This is the question that has residents, living in council houses at the entrance of New England Road, in a state of panic.

Residents received information from a source contracted to the municipality stating that their houses are soon to be demolished to make way for the expansion of the road they live on.

Residents stated that when they asked the municipality to confirm the allegations they received “vague responses” and feel they are being left in the dark.

“We want to know what is going to happen to us. Are they going to incentivise us if we are forced to move? Will we be housed in other areas?” asked Jeanette Campbell a resident to the area for 30 years, who still has not received her title deed.

Campbell said that they have had their fair share of problems living in the council houses and that they have invested their own money into the homes and therefore, deserve title deeds for their houses and answers as to the “looming potential demolition of their homes”.

“My family has built up this house and fixed all the problems in it only for it to be taken away from us. We do not want to move and want our title deed for this house,” said Campbell.

she feels the houses could be taken away from them at anytime and because technically, they do not own the house.

“We have spent so much money on these houses already to fix the many problems they have only for it to be taken away from us. We will not put any more money into these houses until we are given official title deeds,” said Ngcobo who added that they are opposed to the construction of a road over their property.

Ward 33 councillor Nkululeko Mkhize said that he was aware of the matter and upon inquiry, he was told that the houses were acquired for road widening purposes but that no road works would be taking place in the near future.

“According to the information at my dis-

posal, the demolitions won’t take place any time soon,” said Mkhize.

Though Mkhize was told by the Department of Human Settlements that the road work project is a long-term one and said that he would be keeping up to date with the progress so that when it happens, residents are properly notified.

“I am keeping my finger on the pulse so that I can properly notify the residents and consult with them and see that suitable alternative accommodation is provided to each of the affected families,” said Mkhize.

Municipal spokesperson Thobeka Mafumbatha failed to respond to the queries sent to her by the Maritzburg Fever before print deadline.

Resident concerned by raw sewage flowing into stream at Wylie Park NOKUTHULA KHANYILE A CONCERNED nature enthusiast who frequents Wylie Park in Wembley is calling on Msunduzi Municipality to respond to a massive sewage spill that has been gushing into a stream inside the park.

Bobbie Louton from Boughton, who usually enjoys walks in the park with her 10-year-old son Nor and their dog Sassafras, made the unpleasant discovery yesterday morning.

“The stench was noticeable from about 200 metres downstream. I run in the park every day with my dog and discovered the sewage when my dog and I suddenly found ourselves in the middle of it. My socks and shoes were immediately soaked. My dog ran down to the river and was soon covered with black, raw faeces,” said Louton.

Louton, a sanitation researcher who has studied the impact of faecal contamination on the environment and public health for 10 years, said she was “horrified” and “saddened” that Wylie Park and the stream had been contaminated.

“Research in KZN has found that path-

ogens in raw faeces can live for 10 years or even longer in an environment with suitable conditions — such as the cool, shaded, moist environment along a stream.

“Heavy worm infections interfere with brain development and functioning and physical growth in children.

In addition, a single worm in a single human intestine can produce as many as 200 000 eggs per day. This means that if just one family served by that sewer is infected, there could now be millions of worm eggs depositing in the soil, stream bank and stream of the park.”

Louton said she had been informed by another resident that this was not the first time that this has happened.

She said what was even more concerning was that the park was used by a nearby Athlone School for their cross-country run. “Last week they had their cross-country run through Wylie Park across the very spot where the contamination has happened. If the run had happened tomorrow, 500 children could have picked up pathogens on their shoes and tracked them into their schools and home environments.”

Mass rabies campaign hits Pietermaritzburg BYRONE ATHMAN >>Byrone.Athman@media24.com

HE Department of Agriculture, Environmental Affairs and Rural Development has embarked on a massive campaign across South Africa

to rid the country of rabies, and are now in Pietermaritzburg.

In an attempt to rid all dogs and cats of rabies, the department has set up various stations where they are administering free rabies vaccinations to all those who bring their dogs or cats to their

tents. On Monday, the department set up shop outside the civic centre in Northdale. Animal health technician Ginette Bentley said they usually drove around in the rural areas and would call people with animals to their vehicle but are now setting up stations manned by

animal technicians to administer rabies vaccinations.

“Given the increase in the amount of rabies scares that we have experienced this year alone,it is very important for us to be doing this and for us to make sure that we see to as many dogs and cats as

possible while we are here,” said Bentley. The department will be operating from various landmarks in the northern areas this week at midday: Wednesday Heather Secondary, Thursday, Sirkhod Road grounds and Friday, Woodlands Pharmacy.

HE Jai Shiv Hanumanth and Durga Shakti Temple in Northdale has opened its doors to the public to attend their annual Durga Shakti Fire Walking ceremony, for the first time in 10 years . The event takes place on June 30.

The temple, which was established in 1995 on private property, previously only allowed members of the organisation to participate in the fire walk, but after much consideration has decided to allow the public to participate should they follow the rules that come along with the walk.

“Before the walk we will have a 10- day repent for all our sins where we fast and engage in a host of prayers and other significant activities,” said Veron Moodley, a member of the temple.

The significance of the fast, according to Guru Jayesh, is to repent for all the sins that we have accumulated and to detach oneself of all earthly possessions.

“We must give up all the attachments to the world before we walk and once we walk the fire we burn away all our sins thus becoming a new person,” said Jayesh.

The fire walking will be held on the corner of South Road and Sylvia Place where a walking pit will be created.

The ceremony is in respect of Hindu God Mother Durga who had to destroy her own demons by walking the fire and cleansing herself.

“Throughout the fast we pray to the Mother to heal us of our illnesses and do an offering to leave those illnesses behind especially in this time of the changing climate,” said Jayesh.

The temple, which is situated on Steeple Crescent, seeks a sponsorship of cash or goods, leading up to the fast.

“Meals will be provided for those who are participating in the ceremony every day so any kind of sponsorship will go a long way,” said Moodley.

The KZN Museum will update its 2017 Africa Day exhibition, which is still on display, for 2018.

Silhouette cut-outs of Africa have been sent to 15 schools in Pietermaritzburg which will be turned into works of art, accompanying the Mandela theme, and will then be displayed at one of the temporary galleries in the KZN Museum.

Famous storyteller and poet, Gcina Mhlope will render a storytelling session with invited schools and members of the public. This session is by invite only.

Leading up to Africa Day, the Msunduzi Museum will host Sello Hatang CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, who will deliver the Mandela Centenary Lecture on May 18 from 10 am to 12 pm.

After the lecture those in attendance will be treated to a viewing of a temporary exhibition about Nelson Mandela. A day after the lecture, there will be a Mandela Centenary Walk which will begin at the Msunduzi Museum at 9 am and conclude at the City Hall.

Among the guests will be mayor Themba Njilo who is expected to meet attendees at the City Hall where he will be handed a gift.

Viranna Frank, head of marketing and public relations at the museum, said that they expect 200 people to attend both the walk and lecture, stating that the public is invited to attend and that entrance is free.

The N3 is currently operating at near full capacity and will be widened in sections under different engineering contracts. The upgrades will provide for an additional 2-3 lanes per direction and substantial interchange reconfigurations to accommodate future traffic growth and improve safety. Widening will be accommodated as far as possible within the existing median and road reserve, but additional land will be need to be acquired in some areas. The project will involve modification of existing bridges, crossroads and drainage, construction of some new infrastructure and demolition of redundant structures.

Realignment/relocation of services in the existing road reserve will also be undertaken. x Environmental Authorisation Process The project is subject to the National Environmental Management Act 1998 (NEMA) (Act No. 107 of 1998) (as amended). As the project triggers various activities listed in the 2014 Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Regulations (as amended, 2017), SANRAL must apply for environmental authorisation from the National Department of Environmental Affairs. Clarendon Primary’s new principal KAMLA Maharaj has been appointed as the principal of Clarendon Primary School.

Maharaj matriculated at Stanger Secondary and then proceeded to the University of Durban Westville where she obtained a BA Degree and Higher Diploma in Education (University of Natal).

The Clarendon family welcomed her in 1999

as a Grade 6 teacher, and in 2006 she was promoted to the post of senior primary head of department. In 2017, Maharaj served as acting Deputy Principal after the retirement of the previous principal, Mr Prinsloo.

Why intimacy is important IN marriage, one of the most common causes of fights is the topic of sex. While there is a whole host of intimacy issues that couples fight about, the most common disagreement occurs over how often sex is (or isn’t) happening.

If you’re not being close to your partner in this way, the two of you may become less like a couple and more like roommates.

• It is a unique expression of intimacy — sex is a unique expression of intimacy that happens only with your spouse. It’s an expression of love, romance and passion that exceeds a simple hug or kiss.

• It creates deeper conversations and brings couples closer — intimacy requires communication, but not just any old “how was your day?”

It takes a much more open, vulnerable and deep kind of interaction. The things you say to your partner during intimacy are more personal than a discussion about what a tough day you had at work.

There are a number of reasons why intimacy could be a problem: What is erectile dysfunction? Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to get or keep an erection firm enough to have sexual intercourse. It’s also sometimes referred to as impotence.

Occasional ED isn’t uncommon. Many men experience it during times of stress. Frequent ED can be a sign of health problems that need treatment.

Preheat your oven to 170°C. Place the muffin cases in a muffin tray and spray lightly with cooking spray (optional).

For the topping: Mix the walnuts and oats together in a small bowl. Set aside.

For the muffins: Combine the nutty wheat, oats, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, salt and baking powder in a bowl.

Mash the bananas and add these to the bowl. Add the walnuts, vanilla extract and eggs. Place the coconut oil and honey in a small saucepan and warm gently until the coconut oil has melted and the honey is very runny. (You can also do this in the microwave.) Add this mixture to the bowl.

Stir the muffin mixture gently until everything is just combined. Divide the mixture between the 12 muffin cases.

Sprinkle the topping mix over the muffins.

Bake the muffins for 25-30 minutes, or until an inserted skewer comes out clean.

HE Varsity Cricket Club held its annual awards ahead of the upcoming season and to commemorate a successful cricketing season that passed last Saturday at Bangkok Wok in Invesco Centre.

KwaZulu-Natal Inland Amateur manager Jason Sathiaseelan attended the event while many of the first team players were not able to make it due to their off-season commitments.

To start things off, the highest honour of the night was given to Warren Naidoo who won overall player of the year.

All-rounder of the year was given to Mathew Luksich while MVP of the year was awarded to Josh Van Eden.

Mondli Khumalo won emerging player of the year with Kiyolan Moodley walking away with the most improved player of the year on the night.

Warren Naidoo scored the most runs in the premier league at 552 runs while Mathew Luksich took the most wickets with 57 wickets claimed.

A new executive committee was also selected as part of the formalities of the event for the upcoming 2018/2019 season where Sheru Chotu was named as the new Chairman while Sohail Gani was named as Vice-Chairman, Jason Chotu was named treasurer and Mathew Jeas Manager Jason ry the secretary.

Darts compo was tops THE Last Man Standing Darts Competition, a regional event hosted by Devon Peterson, who represents South Africa in the overseas darts league, was held at Fusion Lounge over the weekend.

Pietermaritzburg is the host for KwaZulu-Natal and Fusion Lounge is the chosen venue.

A total number of 84 Darts South Africa (DSA) registered players, both men and women, entered from far and wide, across the province to earn the highest number of points so that their rankings are high in the country.

The ladies final was won by Kriya Odayar and runner-up was Tanya Thomas with winner Carl Gabriel and runner-up Rajen Odayar scooping the men’s final. The next round takes place on June 9 and 10.

Midlands International Polo Tournament RECORD crowds were drawn to Lions River on Sunday to watch their inaugural International polo match against India. The South African team took a convincing win of 12 5½.

Martin Watson, playing in the pivotal number three position, set the ball rolling with a goal in the first minute of the game.

Another from Watson followed in the second chukka as well as one from Captain Tom de Bruin, offset by the Indian team’s first goal.

The third chukka saw a hat-trick of goals from Mike Osborn which gave South Africa a

comfortable lead at half-time of 7 - 2½.

The Indian team battled valiantly in the second half with goals coming from their Captain Ravi Rathore and Gaurav Singh but the opposing team also gave away a few penalties.

Col Rathore was generous in his praise of the South Africans afterwards remarking on their astute teamwork in passing the ball and said his team had been more than happy with the quality of the ponies that had been lent to them by local players.

Man-of-the-Match, adjudicated by previous South African player and past Presi-

dent of the SA Polo Association, Mr Mike Rattray, was awarded to Mike Osborn. The Best Playing Pony prizes were awarded to “Wyzoo” owned by Rory Bryden and ridden

by Colonel Ravi Rathore as well as “Clyde” owned by Ben Crowe and ridden by Siddhant Sharma.

The main curtain raiser was a thrilling match between Michaelhouse and Hilton teams consisting of old boys from these two schools. Having not led throughout the match Michaelhouse caught up to their ageold rivals in the last chukka and in the dying minute scored the winning goal to edge Hil-
