HE Council of the Pietermaritzburg & District Community Chest takes pleasure in welcoming its newest member, Dr S.U. Maharaj (cardiologist, Hillcrest & Mediclinic Hospitals), to the Red Feather Legacy Project.

Dr Maharaj made two generous donations of R25 000 each (Red Feather, with Silver), to honour his late grandfather and late grandfather-inlaw. The plaque honouring his grandfather reads: “In Memory of Pundit Dwarika Maharaj [Tripathi]”, while the plaque honouring his late grandfather-in-law reads: “In Loving Memory

of the Late Mr Ratanjee Pagjee Soni [Fondly known as Baba], Former Inspector of Schools”.

The plaques are displayed on the façade of the Community Chest Offices in Stranack Street.

Cuppa for Cansa to honour inspirational teacher A

CCLAIMED rhythm and blues singer Duane Jonkers and award-winning genderactivist and former columnist Brian Khoza will be guest speakers at Cuppa for Cansa on Saturday, September 7 at Legacy Grills on 104 Chief Albert Luthuli Street from noon.

The event will be in honour of late teacher Ada Lawler and also to support Amelia Jonkers, a pupil at Longmarket Girls’ School and the daughter of Duane Jonkers.

On June 14, Amelia Lilah Eden Jonkers was diagnosed with a Wilms tumour, paediatric kid-

ney cancer. She had her first session of chemotherapy on June 21 and will be admitted into hospital on Sunday, September 8.

Amelia will go into theatre on Monday, September 9 where she’ll have a port inserted.

She will also have another round of chemotherapy once the port is in. More information is available on the Facebook group “Amelia The Warrior”.

According to Khoza, Lawler is the teacher he credits for making him the man he is.

When he was 10 years old, Khoza was frustrated by why they always had to “let the girls go

first” for everything and asked why girls were more important than boys. Lawler held his cheek and lovingly gave him an answer from a Christian perspective, which was: “God created the woman so she can assist the man but she is not as strong as he is so he must take care of her”.

That moment sowed some of the first seeds of his gender-activism and he has acknowledged his dear Mother Teacher in his writing.

Cuppa For Cansa is an initiative by the NGO community where they have “High Tea”, “Cheese and Wine” and similar initiatives

“I thought it may have been people building nearby, but the noises got louder.”

He said he confronted Msunduzi staffers and tried to explain that he had tried to adopt the spot. He said they left when he threatened to call the police. Pillay criticised the City for failing to serve him with any compliance notice, and said he has been sent from pillar to post in efforts to adopt the spot. “Eventually, in June, I met someone from Msunduzi who said there is no need for me to have a certificate because I’ve been maintaining the land. And yet they still came to tear it down. “They damaged my property and someone must be held accountable. If there was a problem, they should have given me a letter saying I had 14 or 21 or 30 days to comply,” Pillay said.

“If I’m asked to remove the fence, I will say only on condition that others around this area also comply. Why is only our house being affected?”

He said he will continue trying to engage with Msunduzi to find a way forward.

Msunduzi did not respond to a query.

N elderly Northdale couple are fuming after members of Msunduzi’s Anti-Land Invasion Unit tore down part of a palisade fence they had erected to preserve a small garden outside their home.

Members of the land invasion unit began tearing down the fence, which was built around the garden right outside the couple’s Bombay Road home about five years ago. Kumarason Pillay (74) said he had tried in vain to formally adopt the spot.

Pillay, who has lived in the home for 47 years, said other houses in the area had extended their homes in a way that encroaches municipal land, but said his fence was not an extension of his own home, but rather just erected to keep stray animals out of the garden.

Pillay said he noticed Msunduzi employees smashing down his fence last week, and complained that he had not been issued a compliance notice from the City that it intended that action.

Man accused of 11-year-old boy’s rape granted bail SHARIKA REGCHAND A 21-YEAR-OLD man who allegedly raped a boy at a mosque in Copesville was on Monday granted bail of R1 000 by the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court.

The man, who can’t be named because he has not yet pleaded to the charge, is alleged to have gone into the mosque toilet where he found an 11year-old boy.

He closed the door, pulled down the boy’s pants and allegedly raped him while holding his hand over the boy’s mouth to stop him from screaming.

The incident took place on August 16 and he was arrested two days afterwards.

The state was not unopposed to him being granted bail because he has a fixed address, no previous or pending cases and is not a flight risk. Also, he and the boy live in different areas. The man does piecemeal jobs to support himself and his elderly

parents.

He is unmarried and has no children.

The Jamiatul Ulama KZN Midlands Council of Muslim Theologians has condemned the incident.

In a statement, it said that from the information it has obtained, the mosque officials reported the matter to the police and it is being investigated.

“We acknowledge the swift response of the SAPS and all involved which resulted in the speedy arrest of the alleged suspect.

“We are confident that the law will take its course to ensure that justice is served.

“The protection of our children is a primary responsibility for all of us.

In this regard, we request all institutions and places of worship to be extra vigilant and to report any criminal activity to the law enforcement officials.” The council also said that it prays that children and communities are “saved and protected from any such heinous crimes”.

‘It’s time to #GoBlue’ P

ROM being poetically powerful, to ageing elegantly, to confidently career driven, women were celebrated by The Independent Institute of Education (IIE) Varsity College Pieter­maritzburg campus during August.

As tribute to the more than 20 000 women who marched on the Union Buildings on August 9, 1956 in protest of the extension of Pass Laws to women, which resulted in August being declared “Women’s Month”, three events were hosted on campus.

The first event took place on August 8 and saw numerous students stand united by reciting empowering poetry and showcasing their various talents.

The event was well-supported by fellow students and students were inspired by motivational speaker and Transformational Life Coach Celeste Du Toit, who spoke on finding your passion, purpose and meaning for life.

The next event, and crowing jewel of the campus’ Women’s Month proceedings, was when more than 30 elderly ladies were pampered, spoilt and entertained on campus.

All the students were enamored with and inspired by the perseverance and positive outlook of these ladies and the fact that they kept dancing, regardless of some of the hardships they faced.

The month ended with a motivational talk by Melanie Veness, CEO of The Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Commerce, titled “What’s wrong with being confident in the workplace.”

Claudine Aboobaker, The IIE’s Varsity College Pietermaritzburg Careers Centre Coordinator, said; “As women we sometimes place limitations on ourselves and subliminal limitations are also imposed on us as by society. This month we looked at tackling those ideas, and understanding how to succeed in the workplace as women”.

Ramaphosa can’t afford unity ADRIAAN BASSON AN ANC veteran who supports President Cyril Ramaphosa but is growing tired of the slow pace of the Thuma Mina project, recently told me something that made a whole lot of sense.

“The president cannot afford unity.

Who do we want to unify with? The crooks? Unity for its own sake is untenable. We can’t have unity between the corrupt and the anti-corrupt.”

The veteran made the case for Ramaphosa to step up the pace of getting rid of corrupt comrades in the ANC and elevating the “good” ones to crucial positions. If he drags his feet, Ramaphosa will “paralyse good people”.

Since the ANC’s Nasrec conference in December 2017, the lie has been peddled that unity will be good for the party and by extension, the country.

The logic, if you can call it that, behind the unity rhetoric is that the ANC will tear itself apart if it continues with

bruising leadership battles between two factions, and that it is a good thing that the top six officials ended up being from both the Ramaphosa and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma camps.

This is, of course, nonsense. Anyone who supports Ramaphosa and believes that he is the right man for the moment to steer South Africa back onto a path of order and economic growth, will agree that he needs all the support he can get to back his cause.

The fact that Ace Magashule, the former premier of the Free State who is implicated in a litany of corruption scandals, is running Luthuli House as the secretary general of the ANC, is a major headache for Ramaphosa.

Let’s take Bosasa boss Gavin Watson’s death as a case in point. On the one hand, Ramaphosa has rejuvenated the National Prosecuting Authority under advocate Shamila Batohi to fast-track cases like the delayed Bosasa prosecution and other cases that implicate ANC politicians and back-

ers. My understanding is that Watson would have been added as an accused in the corruption case against former Bosasa executives.

On the other hand, the ANC, through its press statement sent out after Watson’s tragic death last week and through Nomvula Mokonyane’s eulogy at his memorial service last Friday, elevated Watson to a national hero. Mokonyane is back at Luthuli House, after Ramaphosa dropped her from his cabinet and she declined to go back to Parliament.

With Ramaphosa allies Senzo Mchunu and Zizi Kodwa gone from the ANC headquarters after their deployment to the executive, the president’s support in the top echelons of the party has been diminished. His deputy, David Mabuza, and ANC chairperson Gwede Mantashe, as Mineral Resources minister, have also been assigned executive duties.

Magashule, who is shamelessly undermining Ramaphosa’s leadership

whenever he gets an opportunity, has brought back Mokonyane and Malusi Gigaba, another Ramaphosa casualty, to bulk up Luthuli House. Between Magashule, his deputy Jessie Duarte, Mokonyane and Gigaba, Ramaphosa is risking losing control over the party.

The ANC’s comments about Watson in the wake of his death have been hugely problematic for a party that pretends it is doing its best to fight corruption.

The truth of the matter is that people like Magashule, Mokonyane and Gigaba have been implicated in corruption and state capture, and will use the ANC’s platforms for self-preservation. Speaking on behalf of “genuine ANC members”, whoever they may be, Mokonyane’s speech at the Watson memorial was so devoid of truth that you would be forgiven for thinking she lives in a parallel universe. In Mokonyane’s world, Watson was an innocent bystander in the Bosasa saga; a victim of the racist media who “never

loved” the Watson brothers for their participation in the struggle.

The furthest she would go about the litany of allegations against Watson, was to say “his creator” will deal with what he and COO Angelo Agrizzi were up to.

“Who are we to judge?” she said to loud applause. In Mokonyane’s world, a criminal justice system and the rule of law have no place in SA. They are an impediment to businesspeople like Watson, who were freedom fighters in a previous life and are therefore above the law.

Of course, Mokonyane herself is implicated in receiving bribes from Watson over the years. She promised last Friday to “tell my story” one day. Ramaphosa should take her up on this offer before he continues to seek unity in the ANC.

days in bewildered anticipation. He has a suspicion that something strange is happening down there and an initial home test is rapidly followed by the hurling of diced carrots into various toilets.

The pregnancy is confirmed. News spreads quickly and Dick’s family and friends arrive en masse to celebrate the joyous announcement, downing his beer and wine while he sits in the corner with his glass of water, smiling thinly while fighting off bouts of nausea. The process then gathers momentum with the medical examinations, the scans, the undignified prodding of privates by sanitised strangers while lying prone and vulnerable. Dick is not amused.

He is lucky and his nausea passes relatively quickly. Some, even the pampered royals for goodness sake, have to be hospitalised or spend weeks in bed because of morning sickness. And that’s just the start.

Ahead lie months of increasing discomfort, backache and front ache as the body is stretched and contorted. The feeling is one of being rucked from the inside by the marauding All Black pack (this is hearsay). And all the time Dick is living off scraps and denied booze while his visitors stuff their faces and, again

and again, toast the anticipated arrival and all the joys of childbirth.

The clock slowly winds down and the end, for waddling Dick, cannot come quickly enough. He tells everyone he meets that this small stranger is beating him up from the inside and he wants it out … and now.

And so to the organised chaos of the birth, a blur of pain, elation, doctors, nurses, tears and baby.

By way of an aside, and it might just be the company I keep, but there are not too many men out there who can watch the whole procedure (now that is a euphemism) and then say, hand on heart, they would like a piece of that action.

But it is finally over, some more involved than others, and everyone is congratulated warmly. Dick’s look is slightly more jaundiced. He still has to be patched up, mentally and physically, and ahead lies no sleep, four-hour feeds and, for some obscure reason, cabbage leaves.

(By way of an aside, I was reliably told that back in our day there was no need for a timer.

The baby would remain on each boob for as long as it took the mother to smoke a cigarette. This, I must add, is both hearsay and heresy.)

Today, wine, gin and beer are strictly verboten because Dick is breast-feeding. And sex, which sparked this whole bloody train of events, goes out the window. Forever.

But Dick is about to come into his own. He has tales worth telling. Women tend to make light of the life-changing event: “It went well, thanks for asking.”

But man does not do stoical and Dick goes forth to regale club and pub with graphic and detailed stories, describing his experience as far worse than man flu and even more daunting than the prodding of the prostate.

He makes a meal of it and his bottom line is that childbirth, and all that it involves, is not for sissies. That, really, is the clincher and after careful consideration, and in spite of David Attenborough and the need to cut the birth rate and save the planet, it would perhaps be better to leave nature well alone.

Women, curiously (this is a massive generalisation and no correspondence will be entered into), seem to embrace the role of pregnancy and childbirth.

And men,well,they are tailor-made and perfectly equipped to play the role of armchair critic.

Perhaps God did indeed nail it on Day Six.

If men had babies JOHN BISHOP MY mind chugs along floppily with the body these days, rarely breaking out of a slow shuffle, but occasionally it does stumble on one of those eureka moments. And this week I suddenly had the answer to the world’s population explosion: let the men have the babies.

Having just watched — from a relatively safe distance — the happy arrival of the latest family member, I was again shaken by the sheer magnitude of the occasion, the detailed planning involved, the roller coaster of emotions, the commitment of the parents and, of course, the fortitude and suffering of the mother.

No way a man would do that, I thought, and certainly not more than once. No way in the world would he go back for a second helping.Bumping into the hulking Eben Etzebeth on a dark night would be a more attractive proposition.

But then I started thinking how a switch in male-female roles could solve the world’s most pressing problem, a natural way of controlling the burgeoning population, a built-in contraceptive, so to speak. Simple but brilliant, as David Attenborough would huff.

It was, if memory serves, back on Day Six that God created man (and woman). There was the opening, the chance to have the male rather than the female of the species at the front of the production line. But God blinked and what is done is done, the golden opportunity lost and the women have since been left to carry the baby.

But, I thought, it would be fun if we could at least give it a whirl and see how man would cope with this most arduous of tasks. Yes, it would be a hard sell, even to the most gullible and foolish of males, but there is always one out there. And that is all we would need, just one Dick prepared to stand up and tell us what having a baby is really like.

It would, for our chosen Dick, all start with the timing, as romance plays second fiddle.

He will need more than an F at maths to settle on the right day (or usually night) to successfully conceive and, I’m reliably informed, modern parents are both advised to lay off the booze at the moment critique for fear of what it might do to said baby. (There was a time when having too many dops was often the catalyst for the rushed wedding.)

But back to Dick and his experience.

Outrageous municipal increases DOES the Msunduzi council think we are stupid?

July was very tough for many residents, with the latest outrageous domestic tariff increases.

Many residents don’t fully understand the council’s billing system, which has been planned to keep increasing the fixed charges, i.e. MCB, basic electricity and water charges, which can’t be reduced by consumers who try to reduce their bills by limiting

usage.

In terms of electricity, Kwh charges (this is what you use) have risen from R0,9494 to R1,0735 excluding VAT, a 13,07% increase.

MCB charges (what you pay for the size of your circuit breaker) has risen from R9,60 to R10,86 excluding VAT, a 13,13 % increase. Basic electricity charge has risen from R25,94 to R29,33 excluding

VAT, a 13,07% increase. There can’t be any justification for a 13% increase on the fixed charges.

Refuse charges have risen from R99,46 to R105,43 excluding VAT, a six percent increase. Sewerage charges have risen from R153,79 to R163,01 excluding VAT, a six percent increase. Water charges per kilo litre have risen from R11,64 to R12,76 for the first five kilo litres, excluding VAT, a 9,59% in-

crease. Basic water charge has risen from R21,14 to R22,41 excluding VAT, a 6,01% increase. These increases are apart from the ridiculous rates increases, many of which are now being objected to. The council should seriously review the slogan “City of Choice”.

It was a beautifully colourful day with the sun shining and the music going to entertain both our learners and staff.

Reunion Day is always filled with fun and laughter. Seeing the past pupils return to their beloved school after a few decades is the highlight of the day. They get to catch up with their school friends and exchange stories about their lives thus far. This year we had nine years returning to school, with the oldest being 1959 coming for their 60 year reunion (below).

Five learners took part in the Provincial Road Safety debate where they faced two rounds last Saturday, beating both teams. Each learner was awarded a Lenovo Laptop as their prize. Teams set for T20 league final ANOTHER clean sweep of wins for the Gap Debt Solutions Pieter­maritz­burg Spurs saw them consolidate their position at the top of the Hollywoodbets Dolphins Premier League presented by Aucor in Amanzimtoti last weekend.

The T20 games on Saturday were slightly affected by some adverse weather and the first game of the weekend saw an exciting tie between the Hollywoodbets eThekwini Hurricanes and the Jooma Properties Zulu Kings.

The PMB Spurs continued their winning ways with a three-wicketwin against the AFFA­Holdings Tugela Sharks on Saturday before they beat the Aucor Durban Chiefs and the Fat Henry Drakensberg Thunder side on Sunday.

With 32 points from their first six games of the competition they are guaranteed a spot in next

weekend’s play-off’s, but they will have a meeting with the eThekwini Hurricanes on Saturday before they can focus on Sunday’s semi-final.

The Durban Chiefs tried to put pressure on the table-toppers but, with two wins and a loss from the weekend’s games, they are still eleven points adrift of Spurs.

The big movers of the weekend were the Mobi Cell East Coast Wizards, who jumped two places from fifth to third.

They managed to claim two victories this past weekend, one with a bonus point, which sees them in line for a play-off with one game to go against basement dwellers the Synergy Umgeni Rhinos next weekend.

Rounding out the play-off spots are the AFFA Holdings Tugela Sharks. The Sharks stay in fourth

place on the log, consolidating the position they held after the opening weekend after they registered a win and a loss in the weekend’s action.

They do have two games to play on the final Saturday of round robin games next weekend. They take on the Fat Henry Drakensberg Thunder and then the Aucor Durban Chiefs.

For the bottom four sides there is still a good possibility that things in the top-half could change. With five points for a win, there is plenty of wiggle room for the Drakensberg Thunder and the Jooma Properties Zulu Kings — who both have two games in hand.

Should the Kings and the Thunder win their matches on Saturday morning, then the final game between the two sides on Saturday afternoon at the Maritzburg Varsi-

ty Cricket Oval will be an effective quarter final.

The Hurricanes have got one game left against the log leading Spurs on Saturday morning to decide their fate for the rest of the competition. Nothing less than a win will do for the defending champions.

The Synergy Umgeni Rhinos have one more match left in the competition against the Wizards to salvage some pride and register a win.

There were a number of strong performances throughout the weekend.

Hollywoodbets Dolphins wicketkeeper/batsman Grant Roelofsen registered the highest score of the weekend with 96 not out for the Hurricanes against the Chiefs.

Dolphins all-rounder Sibz Makhanya was in good form with

both the bat and the ball. He helped rocket the Wizards into the play-off places.

Prenelan Subrayen scored 68 not out for the Zulu Kings while Eathan Bosch made 87 in a matchwinning effort from the Thunder.

Young Andile Simelane showed his potential for the Durban Chiefs as they push for a semi-final spot while captain of the Spurs, Calvin Savage, continued his good form with the bat.

The final round robin games will return to Pietermaritzburg as the Pietermaritzburg Oval and the University of KwaZulu-Natal Varsity Oval host the final round this Saturday. The semi-finals and the final will take place at Kingsmead Stadium this coming Sunday.
