South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy.

It’s been a year since his death and many ques­ tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri­ cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’.

ARD 23 community members have threatened to shut down Plessislaer Police Station if their demands are not attended to immediately.

The group marched to Plessislaer Police Station on Monday where they submitted their memorandum of demands.

IN THE MEMORANDUM THEY DEMANDED THE FOLLOWING: • Police visibility and regular police patrol in the community; • Fast response from the police; • Immediate arrest of drug lords; • Total shutdown of all drug dealers’ outlets.

The station was given 14 days to respond to the demands.

This march was led by ward 23 councillor Mdumiseni Phungula and it was part of the Thuma Mina Campaign by African National Congress (ANC).

Phungula said residents are tired of living in fear while they are close to a police station, and the police are not doing their job. He said people get robbed, killed and raped at the same crime hot spots now and again.

“Criminals are walking free while the victims and witnesses of different crimes are living in fear. We will not allow the police to not do their job.

“We want national Minister of Police Bheki Cele and Community Safety and Liaison MEC in KZN Mxolisi Kaunda to establish a task team that will look into pending cases, vigilantism, brutal killings of state witnesses, alleged involvement of police in drug dealings and poor service from Plessislaer Police Station. There are about seven witnesses who have been killed in Ashdown and those cases were reported to the police but nothing is happening. We want witnesses to be given witness protection.

“We are not happy with the poor service that we are getting from Plessislaer Police Station.

Since we are submitting this memorandum today [Monday], we expect to get a response within 14 days on how we are going to tackle the high rate of crime that we are facing.

“If we do not get the answers, we will mobilise all the residents from Greater Edendale and the whole of Imbali and shut down this police station. If the police station fails to do its job, we might as well just close it down,” he added.

He further revealed that there are allegations some police officers are dealing in drugs.

“There are rotten police officers in this station who are suppliers of drugs in our ward and they must be exposed. Our children have turned into vagrants because of these drugs. The hot spots where drugs are being sold are known to everyone, even the police, but no one is doing anything,” he said.

Even if you are not satisfied with the proceeding of the case that you opened, you are welcome to come and speak to the chief investigating officer about your case and the investigations,” he said, adding that they will respond within 14 days.

Station Commander Brigadier Mandla Shezi said they are determined to work with the community to fight crime.

“We will take this memorandum and submit it to our bosses and see what plans we can come up with in assisting the community fight crime,” he said.

UNDREDS of people from across Pietermaritzburg joined forces on Sunday to commemorate Lifeline’s official launch of their 16 Days of Activism Campaign against gender based violence as they marched throughout town to raise awareness about this major issue.

Socials workers, police officers, and pupils were among the crowd who participated in the march alongside Lifeline’s director Sinikiwe Biyela.

Their aim was to voice their concern on how the justice system was failing young victims of sexual violence.

Biyela said that it was alarming that there was an increase in sexual violence aimed at younger people who never see their trial go to

court because they are deemed not trustworthy enough to be witnesses because of their age.

“The justice system is failing us in that we are told that the victim needs to prove that they were assaulted rather than the accused being asked to prove that they are innocent.

“It is happening in our city. Just recently a mother of a baby was told her case was not valid even though her baby identified the accused and a doctor confirmed penetration,” said Biyela, who added that this cannot be allowed to happen, but stated that it would continue to happen should the justice system allow it to.

The Alexandra Police Station also kicked of their 16 Days of Activism Campaign on Monday.

Today, representatives will march from the police station to Scottsville and then to Hayfields to show their support for victims of gender based violence and to state their non-tolerance of this in society.

A

YOUNG gospel artist from Scottsville made his city proud when he brought home an award from the Crown Gospel Awards, held at the Durban ICC on Sunday night.

Ayanda Ntanzi won in the category of Best Praise Song with his song titled Nasempini.

This was not the first time that Ntanzi

was nominated in these awards, having been nominated in 2015 for Best Newcomer with his first album, however this is the first time he has walked away with an award at the event.

Ntanzi told Echo that he is still trying to come to terms with the fact that he won, saying: “I am so happy, I still cannot believe it. It will take time for this great achievement to sink in... Winning this award shows that I am growing as a musician.

“People are recognising me and my music

and that encourages me a lot. Now I need to work really hard and continue giving people the good music that they love and enjoy,” he said.

His song came from his second album, titled Priestly Worship, that was released in December last year.

The artist said that he is working on promoting this album at the moment.

“I want to travel the whole country, promoting my music, before I can start cooking something up in the studio again.

“I want to make sure that people are familiar with me and my music before I go abroad and promote it there.

“I believe that I need to be known at home first before I go outside.

“This is just the beginning; I want to win more awards, like the Satma Awards and Metro Awards.”

Ntanzi also revealed that he will be launching the live DVD of his album on December 7 in Johannesburg. The DVD will be available in stores from November 30.

MAHLE Sithole, an 18-year-old from Lincoln Meade, was crowned Miss KZN Heroines 2018 at Durban City Hall last Friday.

Sithole, who is a Grade 11 pupil at Alexandra High School, was one of the two finalists who were representing Pietermaritzburg in this competition.

Speaking to Echo Sithole said she feels so honoured that she was announced as the winner. She said she worked very hard in ensuring that she makes her parents and

her city proud.

“I really never expected to win against all the models that came from all over the province, especially because I am new to the modelling industry. I only started in June this year.

“When I saw my competitors I lost hope, but I remembered why I am doing this. I did not want to disappoint my supporters and everyone who trusted me, especially my parents because my goal is to always make them happy and proud.

“The competition was very tough which makes me very proud about winning. With this tittle I would like to do everything in my

power to make KwaZulu-Natal a better place and to encourage and motivate the youth. I know it is not going to be easy, but I will start small.

“I am determined to make a change in my city and my province using this title,” she said Sithole went on to thank everyone who supported her as well as her sponsors.

“This one is for my supporters and my city and everyone who had faith in me. I

would like to thank everyone who assisted me throughout the competition.

EPARTMENT of Health in KwaZulu-Natal became the first department to implement the minimum wage of R3 500 before President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the documents.

Community Care Givers (CCG) received the minimum wage last Friday and KZN Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo met with them to give them the good news.

These CCGs, who were coming from different places in KZN, did not only receive the minimum wage, but they got their back pay dating back from June this year.

Previously, CCGs were getting a stipend of R1 500 a month.

Dhlomo said the money earned by the caregivers was minimal.

He said they make a huge contri-

bution and what they are doing is a calling.

“They would use the small amount of money that they were earning to assist the community by buying residents food and small things that they needed. That shows how dedicated they are to their jobs. We are not saying that this R3 500 is the end for them, but if our funds as a department are raised every year, we will raise their salaries as well. This is just the minimum. We are trying to bring back the dignity to South Africans because they cannot earn less than this while they doing this job.

“What makes us more happy is that community caregivers are now under the Department of Health and they have personnel numbers which means that when the government employees get paid they will also get paid the same day,” he said.

Dhlomo also revealed that as the

department they have started training the retired CCGs as staff nurses as a way of thanking them for the contribution that they made while they were earning R1 500.

“We have trained 865 people now.

We also have 430 people that have been trained as the nutrition advisers. [In total] 10 771 community caregivers from all over KZN benefitted.

You can not complain that there is no money, if the money is not there we need to go and look for the money to help them so that we can bring back their dignity,” he said.

Provincial secretary of Cosatu, Edwin Mkhize said they are very pleased with the department’s decision. He said CCGs are very important in the community as they make a huge contribution in changing people’s lives.

“They do their work with passion and they need to be encouraged all the time,” he said.

Church taking social cohesion to the next level THE House of Christ Church, based in Imbali CC, under the leadership of Pastor Nhlanhla Khambule is taking social cohesion to the next level.

Themed “Gospel meet Maskandi”, the main aim of the event is to demonstrate that people from different belief systems can together share a lot of information, wisdom and can work together in building the nation.

According to host Pastor Khambule, the idea is part of a broader call to have different sectors of the society coming together to share ideas and ways of tackling our societal challenges, such as social ills and other social injustices, and work together beyond our religion and belief systems.

ASTWOOD’S very own Zilondiwe Goge will be flying not only the South African flag high, but also representing her community in full esteem as she embarks on a five week, all-expenses paid education tour of Scotland and England via the Abe Bailey Travel Bursary on November 26.

Currently a Master of Psychology student at the Nelson Mandela University, Goge was selected out of hundreds of applicants based on her exceptional leadership skills, community outreach, as well as her outstanding academics.

“I am excited as this will be my first time going overseas. I am hoping to experience a process of learning, unlearning, and relearning.

“I hope to open up my mind to this oncein-a-lifetime experience and be equipped with enough experience, knowledge, and skills to be able to plough back into my community” said Goge.

The objective of the travel bursary is to broaden the minds of young South Africans.

Awarded each year, it covers the cost of an all-expenses paid, five-week educational tour of England and Scotland and a stop-over in Addis Ababa to visit the African Union.

Goge, a student of African Feminist Psychology, said that she has always been faced with the challenge of being uncomfortable with African experiences and how they have been pathologised.

“With the work that I do I hope to meaningfully contribute to legitimising the African experience in a psychological point of view,” said Goge, who added that she has been privileged enough to receive bursaries throughout her studies.

Goge will return from her trip on December 23 and says she wants to be an example to her community and country on how perseverance, determination, and consistency can open up doors for the youth.

Land invasion suspect caught O

N Thursday, November 22 police officers attached to the Provincial Task Team together with specialised Units from Pietermaritzburg and Durban, arrested an 85year-old man following investigations into the illegal sale of farm land in the Inanda area. The man and his associates were fingered in the investigation and are linked to 19 cases including theft, trespassing, malicious damage to property, intimidation and fraud.

These investigations stem from cases registered by the owners of farms in the area during 2017 and 2018. The cases were handed over to the Provincial Task Team after it was

brought to the attention of the acting provincial commissioner that there was no progress with regards to the investigations into these cases. Following a protracted investigation which included the involvement of the office of the deputy director of public prosecutions in KwaZulu-Natal, a controlled operation was conducted and the suspect sold private land to police agents for R20 000.

His associates fled when they received news of his arrest at the Mzinyathi area in Inanda and police are currently looking for two more suspects.

How to be safe this ‘swimming season’ PHINDILE SHOZI >>Phindile.Shozi@media24.com DROWNING is said to be the third highest cause of unintentional death of children in South Africa, this according to the Medical Research Council of the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The WHO state that there are an estimated 360 000 annual drowning deaths worldwide, however they also speculate that “global estimates may significantly underestimate the actual public health problem related to drowning. Children, males, and individuals with increased access to water are most at risk of drowning.”

Lifesaving South Africa spokesperson James Ross said that it’s very important for parents to watch their children with a close eye if they are going near water.

“We usually see children left unattended at the pool, which is not very good because they might drown if they can’t swim,” he said.

He also advised that parents should supervise their children and not let them go to the beach alone.

“Our sea conditions are very dangerous and children should be with a parent every time they want to go to the sea,” advised the spokesperson.

He also reiterated that adults should only swim where there are lifeguards and they shouldn’t swim if ever they are under the influence of any substance.

“Usually men don’t want to swim where they are lifeguards and most of the time they’re under the influence of

Homeowners warned against robbers POLICE in KwaZulu-Natal are warning residents to be alert at all times and not to allow strangers into their homes.

TARTED at the beginning of the year due to an alarming situation where pupils were dropping out of school from as early as Grade 8 and 9, Mama Ntombi Community Projects (MNCP) took it upon themselves to establish a mentorship programme in the Ezinketheni area.

“We noticed that children were dropping out of school at a very young age and therefore decided to embark on this pilot project, taking 10 high school pupils and having them work with seven of our wonderful mentors,”said project manager Sandra Pillay. Pillay said that the pupils were measured each quarter of the year on their progress and they were very pleased to note that the pupils had made measurable leaps and bounds in their academics since the programme was initiated.

“One child in fact excelled at English, receiving an award for achieving 80% . The mentors and mentees have forged wonderful, trusting relationships with one another, some of the mentors are even taking their mentees on special trips with their legal guardians’ or parents’ consent,” marveled Pillay.

Pillay said that as the year comes to an end they have various activities planned for their pupils and the others that they help with things like homework and a reading club as well as some partys in-between for their members.

Partnering with an organisation called Food For Life, the MNCP will also be feeding close to 1 500 children this New Year’s Day, providing the organisation with the ingredients for the food while they do all the cooking and help out with serving the children.

Face of KZN 2018 filled with great entertainment T

HE annual Face of KZN Model Search Contest is going to be an epic show filled with a variety of entertainment.

Kwaito artist Mafeja, gospel artist Innora from Zimbabwe, guitarist from UKZN PMB campus Angel Mazibuko, comedian Kheveneza, poet from UKZN PMB campus Xola Ian Mpanza, gospel group Abathokozisi and Red Army Dancers will keep the audience entertained.

The finalists, selected from hundreds of entrants from all over KwaZulu-Natal, will be strutting their stuff in three categories: casual wear, swimwear and formal wear. Load-shedding: Check your security system before the lights go out

WITH load-shedding being experienced by large parts of the country in recent days, a private security company has warned South Africans to make sure their alarm systems are tested and working properly.

“Many people are under the incorrect assumption that their home alarm system is deactivated when the power supply is interrupted.

“However, if you have a stable and correctly-programmed system coupled with a battery that is in good condition, it will continue to protect the premises during a power outage — regardless if the outage is because of load-shedding or not,” says Charnel Hattingh, national marketing and communications manager at Fidelity ADT. Hattingh says the only time it may not function correctly is if there is a technical issue, or the battery power is low.

“Most modern alarm systems have a back-up battery pack that activates automatically when there is a power failure,” says Hattingh.

She adds that there are a number of practical steps that can be taken to ensure security is not compromised during power cuts.

Some of these include ensuring that the alarm system has an adequate battery supply, that all automated gates and doors are secured and lastly to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to your security provider or the South African Police Service (SAPS).

“If there is an additional battery pack, the small, non-intrusive LED lights can stay on for the duration of the power outage — or a maximum of 40 hours — without draining the primary alarm battery,” she explains.

THE MOST IMPORTANT TIPS TO REMEMBER ABOUT BEING PREPARED FOR A POWER CUT, SAYS HATTINGH, ARE: · It is important that your alarm system has an adequate battery supply. Batteries should be checked regularly. · Alarms should be checked during extended power outages to keep systems running. · Power cuts can impact on fire systems and fire control systems; so these also need to be checked regularly. · The more frequent use of gas and candles can increase the risk of fire and home fire extinguishers should be on hand. · Above all, remain vigilant during a power cut; be on the look-out for any suspicious activity and report this to us or the SAPS immediately.

Local fashion designers and models on show Y

OUNG designer Mpumuza Vezubuhle Dlamini, from Shayamoya, alongside his working partner Athenkosi Lemfux Mfungula are bringing Pietermaritzburg audiences the Edendale Fashion week, which will be hosted at the Greater Edendale Mall. While the event started on November 28, the main show will take place on Saturday, December 1.

Of the event, Dlamini said: “There will be 15 local designers and 35 models from in and around Pietermaritzburg.

T the recent South African National Blood Services (SANBS) media breakfast at Coastlands Musgrave, the organisation stressed the importance of donating blood during the upcoming festive season.

SANBS hopes that the community will find 30 minutes of their time to roll up their sleeves this December to donate some blood, as less than one percent of the country’s population are regular donors.

Speaking on the heightened need

for donors in December, regional marketing manager of SANBS Sifiso Khoza said: “Traditionally, December is a difficult time for the SANBS, as we are unable to collect the 3 000 units of blood a day that is needed to treat patients, like those who are terminally ill, let alone any trauma incidents. If previous year’s blood stock levels over the same period is anything to go by, we know that we have some tough times ahead.”

“Today, the SANBS asks the South African public for help.

“As we head into the busy holiday season, we are facing a particularly

challenging situation and need blood and platelet donors to replenish the blood supply for hospital patients counting on us,” said Khoza.

According to the organisation, the KZN region aims to be accessible, convenient, and visible, and has planned various special blood drive promotions over the festive season and which will continue into January 2019.

The second speaker, Janet Legemaate, spoke about her son, Matthew, who required transfusions during his transplant surgery.

SANBS is a non-profit organisation that operates in eight of the nine provinces in the country.

According to the organisation, they require 3 000 units of blood daily as a blood transfusion occurs every 28 seconds in South Africa.

O-group blood is the most needed group as this blood can be transfused

to any patient in an emergency.

Donors can donate as regularly as every 56-days.

In order to donate blood, donors must weigh over 50kg; be between the ages of 16 and 65; lead a sexually safe lifestyle; be in general good health; and consider their blood to be safe for transfusion.

The blood collected by the SANBS is mainly used for medical cases (27%), childbirth and gynaecological cases (26%), surgical cases (21%), paediatric cases (10%), orthopaedic cases (6%), research/laboratory (six percent) and casualty (four percent).

Tyre safety ahead of the holidays F

OR those planning to travel long distances by car these holidays, tyre safety should be top priority. “Your tyres are the only point of contact that your vehicle has with the road and therefore need to be in good working condition at all times to ensure your safety,” explains Dean Horn, Super Tyres’ managing director.

Checking your tyres’ pressure to make sure that they are properly inflated can make a significant difference in how long your tyres last.

“Under or over-inflated tyres don’t wear evenly and won’t last as long. The front and rear axles and right and left sides of your car wear down your tyres differently. Rotating your tyres regularly helps extend the life of your tyres and improve performance. We recommend that you rotate your tyres every 10 000 km,” says Horn.

To avoid any problems when driving to your holiday destination, practice these important tyre safety tips: Inspect your tyres: It is essential to regularly inspect your tyres for wear and any damage to avoid sudden problems. Have a professional inspect your tyres every six months. Tyres should be of the same size, speed rating and load index.

Check the air pressure: Driving with incorrect tyre pressure can affect a vehicle’s handling and braking, particularly in wet conditions, and

can seriously compromise your safety. Driving on severely under-inflated tyres can cause heat build-up and eventually, premature failure.

Check your tyre pressure monthly and before every long trip.

Respect the load capacity: Do not exceed the load capacity relative to the tyres’ load index.

Tyres loaded beyond their maximum loads can build up excessive heat that may result in sudden tyre destruction.

Check your spare tyre: Always inspect your spare tyre ahead of any long trip.

Ensure it is pumped to the correct air pressure and is in good condition. If you see any damage to a tyre or wheel, replace it with your spare tyre and have your tyre checked by a professional.

Depth of tread: The depth of tread on your tyres is very important for the safety of your vehicle.

Tyres have tread wear indicators molded into the base of the main grooves. When the tread surface is worn to the same level as these indicators, the tyre is at the legal limit and should be replaced to ensure safe diving.

Paddlers set the pace for the upcoming Dusi at Ozzie Gladwin THE SteelCo Ozzie Gladwin on Sunday might have surprised 2019 FNB Dusi Canoe Marathon pundits as Hank McGregor and Tamika Haw claimed victory in the men’s and women’s races respectively.

Despite Euro Steel’s McGregor having won the Dusi in February with Andy Birkett, many didn’t expect to see the veteran on the start line in a K1 following his retirement from K1 flat-water marathon racing earlier in the year.

McGregor’s last taste of K1 racing came at the Hansa Fish River Canoe Marathon in October, where he lost out in an exciting tussle with Birkett; however he didn’t miss a beat on the Mngeni River to take home the coveted title and the KZN K1 river champs laurels for 2018.

The obvious absentee from the race was McGregor’s K2 partner Birkett — the seven-time Dusi winner recently relocated to East London however he is still expected to be on Camps Drift on 14 February to defend his K1 title.

The fight on Sunday was an interesting one with two old hands, McGregor and Thulani Mbanjwa, fighting it out with the young and upand-coming Stew Little. It was a tight tussle right up to the end, with just 39 seconds separating the three coming into the finish, with Mbanjwa taking second and Little finishing in third. Little also took home the title of first U23 at the event.

Euro Steel’s Banetse Nkhoesa has been in strong form through the early stages of the Dusi season and finished fourth on Sunday.

Euro Steel/Red Bull’s Sbonelo Khwela finished in tenth place overall. The former Dusi K2 winner has dominated the Dusi podium for a number of years but is yet to feature in the build-up to the 2019 showdown.

Young U18 paddlers Hamish Mackenzie and David Evans came home in fifth and sixth place respectively, and look to be in good shape going into the final three months before the Dusi.

Mpilo Zondi was the second U23 home and seventh overall.

In the ladies race, former Dusi K2 podium finisher Tamika Haw paddled to victory over a fairly inexperienced field this weekend.

Despite having taken a break from competitive paddling, she cantered home to victory and the

word is that she is working hard to challenge at the Dusi in February.

Chasing Haw home in the ladies race was a plethora of U18 stars. Epworth’s Tracey Oellermann finished second, followed by teammate Caitlin Mackenzie. Fourth went to another Epworth paddler, Cara Waud, and taking home fifth spot and first U16 girl was Nosipho Mthembu.

The next 2019 FNB Dusi Canoe Marathon seeding races are the Supa Quick Fezela Challenge at Albert Falls Dam on Sunday, December 2 and the Florida Dusi Klip race in Gauteng on Sunday, December 2.

HE Midlands District Academy of Sport (MDAS) held their annual sports awards and gala dinner on Friday, November 23 at the Wanderers Sporting Facility. There was representatives from various sporting codes all joining in to celebrate a night of reflection on the various achievements made by their athletes throughout the year.

Programme director for the night and director of MDAS, Vincent Madoda, highlighted the importance of the MDAS throughout the Midlands, stating that athletes who excel in their respective fields need their support in nurturing these athletes and enhancing their skill through scientific methods.

“Our goal is to develop podium athletes, meaning athletes who will represent South Af-

rica internationally and win. We know that in order for our athletes to go on and excel they need the best nutrition and scientific training,” said Madoda.

Madoda stated that the MDAS, which is currently without a high performance centre, desperately needed one and added that it is their long-term goal to build one here in Perfume Pietermaritzburg.

Various teams and athletes were honoured on the night by being presented with trophies for their heroic and brilliant athletic disR430 plays throughout the 100ml year.
