Five massacre victims laid to rest IT was an emotional day for the Sibiya family, friends and the Embangweni community as last Saturday five of the eight family members, who had been massacred, were buried. The funeral service held at Sangweni Primary School in Matimatolo was attended by a large number of mourners. Officials present were the provincial secretary of Community Safety and Liaison, Mr M. Mnqayi, uMzinyathi District Mayor PMS Ngubane, Umvoti Mayor TC Ngubane, Umvoti Deputy Mayor NG Masikane, councillors and iziNduna zendawo. Eight members of the Sibiya family - two sisters and six grandchildren - were brutally murdered on the night of October 3. Three victims were buried two weeks ago, but the five whose service was held last Saturday had been shot and burnt and their service was delayed because of forensic tests. In addressing the mourners, Mayor TC Ngubane said the culture of vi-
olence and killing is a real problem in KZN. “Other people face problems too, but it is only in our province that people resort to violence to solve differences. “That is not the correct approach. I urge community members to rather involve the police or officials if they are unhappy about something.” The surviving Sibiya family members are undergoing counselling to assist them with moving forward. Government departments have also committed to provide the basic necessities to the family who lost everything when their one house was burnt. The family and the community have been assisted and supported by businesses, individuals, government departments and the municipality. At the time of going to press the motive behind the massacre is still unknown and there is an ongoing investigation into the killings, but no arrests have been made.

The recovered Traxcavator Caterpillar.
SPAR GREYTOWN WELCOME ALL STOKVELS
JUST imagine, a lady is walking along a street in Estcourt and sees a copy of the Greytown Gazette on the ground. She picks it up, looks at the front page and says: “But I walk past that machine every day.” So, in what can only be described as an incredible series of happenings, she is now R20 000 better off, the Craigieburn pipeline contractors are delighted at the recovery of the machine, and so is the insurance company. Three weeks ago the Greytown Gazette of October 25 headlined on the front page “R20 000 Reward for return of pipeline machine”. On the previous Friday night some rather brazen thieves had made off with an earthmoving Traxcavator Caterpillar parked on the Greytown-Mooi River road after bun-
dling the night watchman into the boot of a vehicle. Otto Zimmerman from contractors Cerimele Mantombana Joint Venture, announced that a R20 000 reward would be paid for information leading to the recovery of the machine. Security firms and police searched, but with no luck and it was assumed the machine was probably no longer in the country. Then last Saturday Otto got this call from Estcourt (his cell number was in the article) and the contractors were there very rapidly. Incredibly the machine is intact with only the batteries removed. Evidently the machine had been dumped literally in the middle of nowhere on a dirt road between Mooi River and Estcourt. How’s that for a good news story for a change.
