The company, Smiths Manufacturing, believe the donation will assist pupils to have a clear understanding of physical science, natural science and technology because it is a fully resourced laboratory.

School principal Raphael Mtheku says this laboratory will help to improve the performance of pupils in these subjects.

“This will enable them to go on to university and ultimately begin careers in engineering and scientific fields.

OUTH Africa is the worst in the world for drunk driving. According to statis­ tics from the Medical Research Council (MRC) there are 17 000­plus road deaths ev­ ery year, with 58% of deaths being alcohol related.

Another approximately 150 000 people are injured annually in road carnages.

“We should all be appalled by these fig­ ures,” says Caro Smit, who lost her son in 2005 to a drunk driving accident.

Smit, has since launched an NPO, South Africans Against Drunk Driving (SADD), the aim of which is to reduce the high road carnages and assist families who have been affected by a similar fate.

“I am a professional psychiatric social worker and have been involved in alcohol and drug counselling and educating all my career.

“My son Chas, a sober pedestrian, was killed in 2005 by someone who drank, then drove. I decided to use my vast knowledge in this field and started South Africans Against Drunk Driving ­ SADD ­ based on the United States MADD organisation.

“Our mission is to stop drink driving, to protect families from needless death and make a difference.”

She said very few people know what the legal blood alcohol concentration limits of alcohol is.

“We have done extensive research in the field and the legal limit is less than 0.05g for an ordinary driver and less than 0.02g for a professional driver [taxi, bus, truck drivers].

“SADD has concentrated on educating about the legal limits, teaching the correct units for different alcoholic drinks, educating what units come to in the blood and breath, and about the elimination rates of alcohol.”

Smit said the “just­one­drink­attitude” is inaccurate and dangerous.

“It is better to use a unit measure as one unit gives a blood alcohol concentration of 0.02g. One Black Label 750ml quart (Ingu­ du) has four units in it and will result in a blood alcohol level of 0.08g. ­ over the legal limit.

“One restaurant glass (usually 250 ml) of red wine will come to 3.5 units and will result in a blood alcohol level 0.07g ­ over the legal limit.”

She said SADD works countrywide and acts as an advocacy group to monitor drink driving, to ask for more testing, to act as a media expert and assist victims emotionally and with court advice.

“In Durban, for example, SADD assisted the victims of the two cyclists killed by an in­ toxicated driver to get the ‘driving under the influence of alcohol’ charge added to his charge sheet, even though his blood was not

taken after the crash.”

Smit said drink driving is a preventable crime that causes enormous emotional damage to families, and results in huge cost to the economy, and the community can play a part in ending this.

“People can assist by learning the correct facts about alcohol and basic road safety, and by educating others. By joining SADD we will share this information through DVDs, pamphlets, projects, and so on.

“Citizens also need to be vocal about ask­ ing for safer roads and best road safety prac­ tices being done by the government like fin­ ing for non­seat­belt use, doing more alcohol testing and getting convictions.”

She encouraged the community to ob­ serve World Day of Remembrance of Road Traffic Victims on November 19.

Cows slaughtered for celebration DERRICK ZINCUME

BAHLALI baseMjondolo Movement slaughtered two cows and several sheep to celebrate a victory against the eThekwini Municipality.

Abahlali Movement obtained an urgent court interdict against the city to stop evicting the shack owner who had illegally occupied the state land.

Abahlali baseMjondolo secretary Thapelo Mohapi told the Fever that they acquired a court interdict against the city last month to stop the eviction of their members. The court also ordered that those who had their shack demolished be allowed to rebuild their homes.

“On Monday, August 7, we and city officials, went to the area to allocate displaced shack dwellers,” he said.

He explained the celebration was held at the branch launch in the eMasenseni area in Mariannhill on Sunday, August 13.

“The community has already started reconstructing their homes that were destroyed by the municipality during the eviction in July. Even though the struggle in eMasenseni was hard and led to the death of a young man and two people being injured, the community is grateful they have finally won the right to the land.

“In appreciation of the struggle and the victory that this community has gone through, the community has decided to rename the branch - it is now called eKukhanyeni, which means the light. The community has been facing evictions since 2015, but they now see the light since they are settled in their community,” he said.

Mohapi said 13 homes were destroyed during the eviction. He also told members that the victory is for homeless people.

“We know the city has appealed against the court decision and we urge our members not to allow anyone to come into the area to add more shacks as that would be treated as land invasion,” he said.

Mohapi said since the court granted the interdict, city officials have been approachable. “We have created a good relationship with the city since the court order was issued,” he said.

PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma’s name is mud in the international community. That much is clear from an opinion piece in The Economist, which said that the most striking thing about the vote over whether to sack Zuma was the claims his supporters did not make. The esteemed publication commented: “During the debate in parliament on August 8, no one said: ‘Let’s keep Mr Zuma as our president because he has done such a splendid job of running the country’.

“Some ANC MPs “did not mention him by name at all, so embarrassing has his record become.

“Instead, they accused the opposition of all manner of skulduggery and, of course, racism … Shortly after Mr Zuma narrowly survived the vote, his police minister described those who failed to back his boss as ‘suicide-bombers’.”

The Economist singled out Mmusi Maimane, leader of the Democratic Alliance, for speaking

with “more conviction” about the country’s “corrupt and broken president” and Economic Freedom Fighters’ leader Julius Malema for being “forthright in his contempt” for Zuma.

The vote was a stark warning for the ANC, according to The Economist.

“Mr Zuma mustered only 198 MPs in his defence, a woeful result for the head of a party with 249 out of 400 seats in parliament.

After accounting for absentees, it seems that a fifth of ANC MPs either abstained or voted against their president.”

The Economist tells its international readers that it is “not hard to see why” some ANC MPs no longer support Zuma, not least of all that he faces 783 charges of corruption, which he denies. His next court hearing is next month.

“A report from the public protector, an ombudsman, has accused Mr Zuma and the Guptas, a family of Indian businesspeople, of orchestrating ‘state capture’.

And the president’s son, Duduza-

ne, may be called to answer questions before a parliamentary committee that is investigating allegations of graft at state-owned companies involving some of Mr Zuma’s key allies.”

The Economist highlights the many failures of Zuma. “Such is the cronyism and mismanagement of the Zuma administration that South Africa has dipped into recession, its debt has been downgraded to junk and unemployment is a whopping 28% (or 36% if one includes those who have given up looking for work).

“The economy contracted at an annualised rate of 0,7% in the first quarter, even as the population swells by 1,6% a year. Meanwhile, Mr Zuma’s cronies have grown staggeringly and ostentatiously rich.” Good news for Zuma, bad news for ANC? The Economist underscores the perception among opposition parties that the failed vote of no confidence will “bind the ANC ever more closely in the eyes of voters to an unpopular president” — and

He further said that “they [Rivonia Tri­ alists] represent the highest in morality and ethics in the South African political struggle, this morality and ethics has been sentenced to an imprisonment it may never survive”.

Those who voted with their consciences are like the “brave men” Luthuli spoke about. The ANC National Executive Com­ mittee closed all avenues to have President Jacob Zuma account for his lies and sins.

The only avenue left for brave men and women to help the nation get rid of the Guptas is to vote with their conscience.

Centre provides pupil support T

HE Cast Community Empowerment Centre in KwaDabeka provides several educational support services to local children, including the after-school programme which assists pupils to complete their homework.

Phakamile Gama, who lives in KwaDabeka J, first heard about the programme through a friend and decided to join as a volunteer in August 2016. For Gama, working with the Grade R-1 children has been the greatest challenge because they are very young.

“However, it makes me feel proud about myself because I have the ability to help them read and write.”

The after-school programme assists pupils from Grade R to Grade 9 to empower them to achieve their academic potential, specifically through reading and writing skills. The programme is designed to meet pupils on an individual basis to give them the space to focus and learn.

Andiswa Mkhize from KwaDabeka C and a Grade 8 pupil at Sthokozile Secondary School has joined the programme. Andiswa first heard about the programme at Sunday school in September 2015.

“The programme has been helpful to me because it has increased my knowledge. Before, I used to receive two achievement certificates, now, I’m receiving four achievement certificates and an outstanding achievement award from my school.

“These certificates are for natural science, economic management science, English and

Tutors ensure that pupils comprehend their lessons and understand what is expected from their teachers. Andiswa has battled with mathematics, but since she received the help of tutors her marks have improved.

“I am grateful to the volunteers for creating a loving, caring and supportive environment that has helped me improve in school work, and being able to identify my talent - traditional Zulu dancing. I am confident that my future looks bright because of this support.”

Being part of the programme has taught Andiswa the importance of writing notes in class.

“They assist me when I’m studying or doing my homework.

“I’ve also realised that the programme will help me in the future because I receive the information I need to assist me with my studies, and I believe with the good marks I will get a bursary so I can further my studies at university.

I have also invited pupils in my grade to join this programme because I have seen improvement in my marks and I want the same for them.”

The reason why this year is so special for Hillcrest Villagers Juniors/Colts Rugby, is that not only did 29 boys from U13 to U18 make the Duikers Squad, but the U13's have made history,

for both our club and the DRSU. Annually the villagers send possible and probable candidates for trials for KZN Duikers (club rugby inter-provincial rugby team).

This year the U13 coaches sent 17, U13 boys to try out and all were selected.

MANDELA Day fell during the July school holidays, but St Benedict School was not going to miss this opportunity to reach out and help the community.

Earlier this month the school cele­ brated Mass for St Benedict’s Feast Day and gave thanks for the many blessings that God has bestowed upon the school.

After Mass, every single class in the entire school spent 60 minutes working on outreach projects in order to share our blessings with those who are less fortu­ nate. Free rabies clinic at SPCA THE Kloof and Highway SPCA will be hosting its annual rabies vaccination clinic on Sunday, 27 August at the Kloof and Highway SPCA, 29 Village Road, from 9am­12.30pm. The clinic will be held at the main reception at the SPCA. The clinic is a follow­on to the first clinic that was started in June 2012, following the dramatic increase in positive rabies cases at that time.

Brigitte Ferguson, SPCA marketing officer, said the rabies vaccinations need to be done annually to ensure the vaccine remains effec­ tive, and thereby not only protects ones four­ legged companions but also immediate family and community.

“There will be no charge for the rabies vacci­ nations, however, donations are most wel­ come. Owners are advised to bring existing vac­

cination history if they have it, but vaccination certificates will be provided if they do not.

“Please ensure all dogs are on leads and all cats are contained in secure baskets or cat cag­ es when bringing them to the rabies vaccina­ tion clinic,” she added.

NTREPRENEURS, seasoned business­ women, community champions, activ­ ists and advocates from around the world will unite in Durban next month for Mrs Universe 2017. As an activist­themed event, Mrs Universe falls outside the typi­ cal arena of pageantry, and recognises in­ dividual efforts made by each married con­ testant in her own country to uplift and empower women.

Mrs Gabon, Gwen Madiba, is a TV host, global entrepreneur and a human and women’s rights activist both in her home country in central Africa and in her “adopt­ ed” home, Canada. Among her many en­ trepreneurial ventures, Madiba is the founder of the Safara African Print Fashion Show that celebrates various African cul­ tures while raising funds for various causes that directly touch women and children in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Senegal and Gabon.

“I strongly believe that it is only by coming together as one nation that we can bring powerful change in the world.”

Madiba is the recipient of several awards in recognition of her stoic efforts to empower women and children and was listed in the Women’s Executive Network list of 2010 Top 100 Most Powerful Wom­ en in Canada.

Nigeria’s contestant, 35­year­old Faith Ifeoma Ogaga, has woven her love for bright colours and creativity into a success­ ful career as a fashion designer. “My phi­ losophy has always been ‘If you can dream it, you can achieve it as long as you keep working hard towards it’,” says the mother of two from Delta State, Nigeria. The en­ trepreneur is also passionate about “giving back” and volunteers at a local centre for widows where she shares her skills to em­ power women to be self­sufficient.

Mrs North America, Janelle Woods­ McNish, is taking time off from her posi­ tion as a director at Harvard Pilgrim Health Care where she heads community uplift­ ment initiatives, to jet into Durban next week. The community advocate, wife and mom to twins is involved in the "Saving

our Children from the Night" in partnership with the global NPO, Children of the Night.

At the same time Woods­McNish is an as­ tute businesswoman who, in 2016, was listed in the Boston Business Journal's 40 under 40 list of business leaders.

Mrs Singapore, Racheal Olivero, is an events manager who is involved in several charitable organisations including the Sing­ apore Red Cross Home of the Disabled, ARC Children Centre and Touch Community Service. A mother to two daughters, Olivero has worked on a local, educational TV series targeting pre­schoolers. As a dys­ lexic, she found a way of using her drawing skills to help overcome the disorder and teaches this skill to dyslexic children The theme of “Empowering Women, Creating Change” will feature prominently in every activity leading up to the Mrs Uni­ verse World Final on 2 September 2017. All 84 contestants will participate in the #OneVoice march against gender­based violence and child abuse in the Durban city centre on August 30. The women will also

visit schools in the greater Durban area and spend time at Verulam­ based LIV Village for orphaned and vulnerable children, to encourage girls to study further and empower themselves with education.

The World Final will take place at Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Cen­ tre on 2 September 2017.

EING a lover of “nippy” cars that are convenient to zoom around cities in, I was surprised that I loved everything about the Opel Mokka Cosmo.

This car is perfect for a singleton or a family. I am not sure how Opel pulled it off, but it is the perfect blend of an SUV and a compact car.

The compact SUV has ample space to seat a family of five while you will not

have to drive around in circles looking for the perfect parking space – it fits into just about most parking bays. It is a perfect fit for me. The good news is the boot space has not been compromised.

I drove the Mokka 1.4T Cosmo 6MT and the only thing I had to get used to was changing gears to six. I felt at home the minute I got into the driver’s seat.

The interior has a “spaceship”-type feel to it with its new infotainment system and driver displays. At first

glance, there is a lot going on, but the system display for the driver is easy to figure out with the controls being on the steering and indicator arm.

However, a negative for me was the big screen and other settings. I felt I needed a manual to understand how to use the system efficiently. I am not sure if I was able to figure out everything at the end of the week. I did find it a tad bit distracting at times.

A lot of attention has been paid to safety in this vehicle. While at first, I felt a bit overwhelmed with the con-

stant beeping every time I indicated or attempted to reverse, but the car is sensitive to everything around it, including pedestrians and pets. It would be very difficult to make a mistake driving this car.

The car also has some bonus luxuries, including heated seats. This is not a feature that is required in Durban often, but you can use the heated seat function when the leather interior gets a bit cold.

My absolute favourite feature is the fuel economy. It felt like a full tank of

fuel could get me to the moon and back.

The economy on average for city running around was 6.5L/100km, while the average of the long distance, travelling on the N2 and N3, was much lower. Also most times, I travelled with family, which is four adults, and occasionally, luggage.

If you’re looking for versatility, safety and convenience, then test drive the Opel Mokka, you will have to look no further.

Motoring icon celebrates 50 years with a growl AFTER 50 years of driving performance, Mercedes­ AMG has given the world one distinctly recognisable voice ­ the signature growl of the AMG engine. To mark AMG’s 50th anniversary, the brand is calling on South Africans to imitate this iconic sound on Instagram, Fa­ cebook, Twitter or any other social media channel, tag­ ging Mercedes­Benz South Africa and using the hash­ tag #AMGgrowl.

To kick off the campaign, Mercedes­AMG has com­ piled videos featuring their “Friends of the Brand”, in­ cluding fashion designer David Tlale, musician J’Some­ thing of Mi Casa, TV personality Jeannie D and environ­ mentalist Kevin Richardson and others, doing their best interpretation of the distinctive growl.

In total, eight videos prepared by the Friends of the Brand are being released online by Mercedes­AMG dur­ ing August – inspiration for AMG fans to add their own growl to the collection. The videos ­ both those re­ leased by the brand and those posted by fans ­ will pay homage to AMG over the years.

“South Africans have shown us just how much they love our AMG cars, especially the iconic and visceral sound exhaust note, and this is why we plan to also profile our fans doing the growl, while highlighting the inherent beauty of our AMG range. It’s a celebration of Driving Performance as well as a ‘thank you’ to all who hold our brand close to their hearts,” says Selvin Govender, marketing director, Mercedes­Benz Cars.

2011: AMG branches into motor racing with the SLS AMG GT3. The SLS GT3 marks Mercedes­Benz’ entry into exclusive customer racing.

2014: The Mercedes­AMG GT is the second sports car to be developed entirely in­house by Mercedes­ AMG in Affalterbach. With its entry into the compact segment and its 43 series vehicles, AMG widens its portfolio while winning new groups of customers.

2015: Mercedes­AMG sets a new sales record with almost 70,000 units.

2016: The Mercedes­AMG GT3 writes a new chapter in the history of customer sports. At the ADAC Zurich 24­hour race at the Nürburgring, the first four places went to teams competing in the Mercedes­AMG GT3.
