MANY people either look forward to the festive period and begin their countdown to Christmas in October, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season.

As we get ready to wind down and take a breather, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was.

Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all.

CT Forestry Co-Operative Limited donated R25 000 to the PMB SPCA as part of their Mandela Day initiative.

The cheque was presented by the director’s wives and will go towards

renovating the cattery.

Maureen Vida from SPCA said they are very grateful to the NCT and the money will assist tremendously.

“We are totally overwhelmed. We did not expect this amount. It will be put to good use to upgrade the lives of the cats.

“Our cats live in small cages, now

we will be able to increase the size and the cats will have playgrounds.”

She said as a NPO they have many financial challenges as they get loads of cats and dogs all the time.

“At the moment we have 70 cats and want keep them happy in the best conditions and be able to accommodate as many as we can in the future.

“We hope other co-operatives will also assist us so we can continue to keep our animals and workers happy.”

She said they had no idea how much money NCT was going to donate.

“I was just talking to someone a month ago telling her about the our work and struggles. I didn’t know she

was from a big company. She said she is going to speak to the company she is involved with to see what they can do.

“They came to us and said they will see how they can help us. We were shocked when we saw the amount they were donating, but we are very grateful.”

Is ‘replica’ make­up bad for your skin?

LETHIWE MAKHANYA >>lethiwe.makhanya@media24.com HAVING a weave and sporting expensive make­ up brands has become the trend for most young women, however, this compels some to buy counterfeit or top­brand replica make­up and weaves just to keep up with trends.

Many so­called “fake” make­up is sold along the road or at small shops at a low cost, but have the brand name of the original product.

People claim that when you wear fake make­ up, it treats you well for the first six months, thereafter your skin becomes itchy and you break out in pimples and black spots.

Maritzburg Fever spoke to Londeka Gabela who said she has been using make­up for five years, but doesn’t use the replicas or fake stuff because she is scared her skin might get dam­ aged.

“I once bought fake make­up for R25 and it was a brand that I use. I used it for a week and my face broke out in a rash and I never used it again. If you don’t know the original brand you are likely to be tempted to buy fake because its

cheap.

“It’s the small things that are different, like the shape and weight of the container. A per­ son who continually uses an original brand can see or tell if it’s fake,” she said.

Gabela said although the original is more expensive she prefers using it because it lasts much longer.

Doctor Zamambo Mkhize, a local dermatolo­ gist said the make­up can only affect someone who has an allergy.

“The only thing that has a negative implica­ tion on someone's skin are the skin lightening products they use, as well the weave they put on.

“Tight weaves and relaxers can affect peo­ ple. African women lose their hair and weaves contribute to that.

“We want to raise awareness for people who work in salons that if a person complains about their hair ‘being sore’ they must listen. That person is mostly likely to lose her hair,” she said. Mkhize said it is very rare that people de­ velop skin problems because they use make­up whether it is the replica or original.

Mediclinic supports Mandela Day IN celebration of Mandela Day, Mediclinic Hospital hosted a meal packaging event where staff participated and did their bit for 67 minutes.

Mediclinic contacted Stop Hunger Now SA in October 2016, as it was keen to host a meal packaging event as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme.

The aim was to empower the many early childhood development facilities in the community to end child hunger.

A total of 10% of the meals were allocated to the disaster relief programme.

Stop Hunger Now SA set up the packaging event at Mediclinic on Monday, July 10.

Eager Mediclinic volunteers, together with

pupils from Pelham Senior Primary School and the Maritzburg College Hindu Society, came together to make a difference.

Community service in a fun atmosphere was the order of the day and new friends and memories were made.A team approach, being a Mediclinic value, was evident as every one worked together to meet the target well before the time.

“Schools are given a book, like a pass­ port and each time they visit a museum their book gets stamped, which is why the competition is called the ‘passport compe­ tition’. “We want schools to visits muse­ ums so we can add value to the curriculum because the KZN Museum is a historical museum and Msunduzi and Old Prison Mu­ seums are cultural museums, which is why we run this competition,” she said.

She said schools are given the first two terms to visit the museums and get their “passport” stamped.

“We always visit schools and encour­ age them to enter the competition, but be­ cause of our marketing budget we can’t go to all schools, however, the competition is open to all schools.”

SCOTTSVILLE residents and motorists who use Harwin Road are unhappy with the way the road has been left since some road works took place on it a few weeks ago.

They claim the municipality dug up the road, but left gravel and stones behind and say no one has returned to finish the job or level it. Liesl Scheepers, a staffer at Varsity College in Harwin Road, said she uses the road every day and it has now become dangerous to use.

“I ride a motorbike and the condition of the road now has made it dangerous. Students use motorbikes and bicycles every day on it and it’s not safe for them either.

“I tried contacting the municipality regarding this road but got no response. When they did it [roadworks] it looked as though someone was going to come back and finish the job,

Another resident, who asked not to be named, but who also uses Harwin Road when fetching his child from school, said they want the road fixed, and soon.

“It’s been a month now. This road is very bad. People now have to use the wrong lane just because the other lane is messed up. Accidents will happen because no one wants to use the damaged lane.

“For us, who drive small cars, its even worse because they get damaged underneath so we are forced to use the wrong lane, which is dangerous,” he said.

Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson Thobeka Mafumbatha could not be reached for comment as her cellphone rang unanswered and she did not reply to emails sent to her at the time of going to press.

British hockey team visits GHS LETHIWE MAKHANYA >>lethiwe.makhanay@media24.com THE King’s High School from Canter­ bury, England, on a South Africa hockey tour, played against Pieterma­ ritzburg Girls’ High School on Monday.

Participants were the U16, A and B teams from both schools.

GHS A beat King’s High A 4­1, and Kings High B team beat GHS B 2­1.

Kings High A team admitted de­ feat saying that it was a tough game and they had challenges.

“It was a good game, but it was tough. The team we played was very good. I think our problem was that we were unfit. If we can increase our fitness level we will come back fight­ ing. We want a rematch,” said Mabel Pickering, King’s High A team player.

However, being unfit was not the

only challenge the team faced. They were not used to playing in warm weather.

“We are not used playing in the heat ­ we are used to playing in 10 degrees, at the least. It was like sum­ mer for us, but it was beneficiary be­ cause we learnt something and we will be able to play in the heat when we go back,” said Mabel.

Nolwazi Zondi, in the GHS A team, said their team played well and hope that King’s High returns.

“We are always keen for a game ­ they must come back. If we can play like this after holidays without train­ ing it means we are doing well, but there is always room for improve­ ment,” she said. King’s High pupils said they love South Africa, and their hockey tour will form part of their history.

ITH a record entry for the KZN Canoe Marathon Championships in Pietermaritzburg on the weekend, preparations for the ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships from September 4 to 10 shifted up a gear as the local organising committee started finetuning logistics for the global showcase, now just 45 days away.

Over 280 local paddlers raced across the Junior, U23, Senior and the Masters age groups, contesting the K1 titles on the Saturday and the K2s on the Sunday, with the course and set-up getting widespread approval from participants and spectators.

“The atmosphere at the KZN champs was fantastic,” said Andy Birkett, silver medallist at last year’s world championships.

“Often the KZN Marathon Championships is boring and slow, but this weekend was unbelievable.

“For those waiting to race, the venue is cool because you can almost

see all the action on the course, which makes Camps Drift so unique as a marathon venue.

“Especially that last ‘hot lap’ where you can see the last turn and the sprint for the line, it makes it so exciting for the spectators.

“The buzz around the club is really special. You can sense that the world champs are just around the corner,” said Birkett.

“We got down to training the other day and it looked like a race was on because there were over 60 people on the water training.

“And that is what we are experiencing at all the clubs across South Africa.

“The feedback was positive, and we feel we are moving in the right direction,” said organising committee chairman Steve Botha.

“We made changes to some of the infrastructure, like the batching and check-in process, and this was a clear improvement.
