This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. To those people who are continuously going the

Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

Third KZN nurse killed, executionstyle CHELSEA PIETERSE

T

EARY-EYED Grey’s Hospital nurses bid farewell to slain nurse Sister Ntokozo Xulu in a touching memorial service last week. Xulu (48) was shot in the head, execution style at her home in the Grange on Tuesday. According to a source, Xulu was sitting in her lounge and had been talking to someone before the shots were fired. A relative who was in the house said he heard two shots. Neighbours said they had seen a man “casually” leaving the home before getting into a black Polo and driving off. The vehicle did not have number plates. The hospital where Xulu had worked since 1995 held a memorial service in one of the halls where friends, colleagues and her family came to say their goodbyes. Xulu’s colleague, Sister Jenna

Camp, said Xulu was hard working and always put patients first. She said Xulu, a cancer survivor, was always warm, caring and bubbly and the paediatric ward where she worked would not be the same without her. Another colleague, Sister Pamela Nkomonde, said Xulu was a mother, a friend and a teacher to her and the nurses who worked with her. At the memorial was KwaZulu-Natal Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, who said he was shocked and dismayed at the killing of female nurses. Last year another Grey’s Hospital nurse, Sindisiwe Shelembe, was shot and killed on the Townhill part of the N3 while driving to the hospital for the night shift. In another incident in Pietermaritzburg in April, advanced midwife at Edendale Hospital Thabisile Doyisa (46), was allegedly shot and killed by her policeman husband with an R5 ri-

Her husband, a member of the Public Order Police Unit in Pietermaritzburg, fled the scene before police could arrive, but hours later returned to his house where he handed himself over to officers. “Sister Xulu becomes the third nurse to be brutally killed in the space of three years in this district,” said Dhlomo. He said Xulu’s colleagues had spoken highly of the nurse, saying she was passionate about caring for people. “She demonstrated that her passion was with paediatrics by following her midwifery studies with a post-ba-

MOTHER of three is contemplating life without her husband of 26 years after he died in December from heart failure. Marie Botes said she wants closure on the death of her husband Waldemar Rosser, who would have celebrated his 52nd birthday on 18 January. Botes is seeking the Department of Health authorities’ intervention in investigating her husband’s death which she says was as a result of negligence by staff at Northdale Hospital. The Scottsville resident said her husband was kept at the hospital, but received no treatment for his condition. Botes said there were no doctors available to tend to her husband as she was told they were all on leave. “My husband was a heart patient. Seven years ago he had a heart bypass operation and half of his heart was not functioning. “On the morning of 26 December he was fine and asked to lie down. I went into the bedroom to check up on him and noticed his face was drooping like he was suffering a stroke. I called my son and we rushed him to Grey’s Hospital.” She said when they arrived at Grey’s the doctor, who attended to her husband, sent him for a CT scan which confirmed he had suffered a stroke affecting his right side. “The doctor told us there were no available beds at Grey’s and that he would transfer him to Northdale. “When they admitted him at Northdale the nurse on duty told us to leave and visit him the following day as visiting hours were over.” Botes said she was shocked when she visited her husband the following day and found him in the same state

my husband had not received any assistance because he was seriously ill and needed attention.

“The nurse told me they did not know what was wrong with my husband and were waiting for us to arrive. How did they not know about his condition when his file was there? I was the one who collected his main file for the doctors at the clerks section with all his medical history.” During all this time she said Waldemar’s condition remained critical. “He could not move or talk. He was not even on a drip, he was not wearing an oxygen mask or connected to a heart monitor. He was restless, could not recognise us and had a disposable nappy on. “When I asked to speak to a doctor, a sister on duty told me they were short staffed and I should return the following morning to speak to one.” Upon arriving at the hospital on the morning of 28 December Botes said a nurse called her into a private room to tell her that her husband had died. “They left him from Monday until Wednesday not bothering to help him, they let him suffer and die. I could have just kept him here at home and let him die here. “I want to know how the hospital operates with only nursing staff and no doctor supervision. They could have gone the extra mile to save a patient’s life,” she said. Botes said she wants the hospital to investigate the events surrounding her husband’s death. “I’m not doing this because I want money, I know there are other patients who go through the same thing and keep quiet, its the reality patients in public hospitals are faced with every day,” she said. KwaZulu Natal Health Department spokesperson Agiza Hlongwane said the department is investigating the matter.

Ndlela said there is a shortage of skilled workers in South Africa. “Tvet colleges offer a number of practical skills that are in demand this country,” Ndlela said. Ndlela went on to say he would like to urge people to not look down upon Tvet colleges. “Tvet colleges are in no way inferior to universities,” Ndlela said. He said most unemployed grad-

Ndlela said this is because Tvet colleges equip their graduates with practical skills that are needed. “Moving forward people must change these attitudes,” Ndlela said. They believe the police and the mu nicipality should take full responsibility for what the area has turned into, espe cially after evicting the vagrants from the beer hall. “What did they expect? The people working around the area say they live in fear for their lives, and believe the number of muggings has in creased. A business owner who did not want to be named said they are now losing customers because people don’t want to walk around there, fearing they will be mugged. “Muggings happens on our watch, they don’t hide this at all. “Neither the municipality nor the po lice will assist us, but if we take matters

Provincial police spokesperson Thu lani Zwane said the police will increase their visibility in the area to ensure that people are safe.

city’s executive committee (Exco) that they had applied for a roll-over but were denied it. “We have to pay [back] what was not used,” Ngcobo said. General manager for Infrastructure Services - the department accountable for spending these grants - Nomnganga Sabatha, said there was “confusion” about whether to spend the money or not and when they received the goahead, “it was too late”. When asked if the city had the money to repay Treasury, the Exco was told that the money had already been returned to the department in December. Chairperson of the Economic Development committee Eunice Majola said she was “very disappointed” with the report. “I am wondering why we have not spent this money. People out there need service delivery and this is not painting a very good picture of the municipality,” Majola said. She demanded that a report from “those accountable” be delivered at the next executive meeting. DA caucus leader Sibongiseni Majola said the report raised serious concerns as this was part of the reason the auditor-general gave the city a qualified audit. “We are not learning from our past mistakes. What obstacles are leading us to give this money back? Management must provide answers,” he said. Ngcobo, who sat in for acting city manager Sizwe Hadebe, said certain projects were bound to face various challenges at ground level. He mentioned the Integrated Rapid Transport Network project as a large-scale project for the city as one example. He said there were issues that hindered certain projects. “It is not just for the sake of just spending; expenditure must be disciplined. “Yes, it is taboo to not spend conditional grants but we must be practical and responsible,” Ngcobo said. Raising another issue, DA councillor Glenn McArthur said the report was dated almost four months ago but only brought to council last week. He said the delayed reports were one of the reasons why the municipality could not keep control of their finances. Exco demanded monthly reports on how the city was spending the grants.

PIETERMARITZBURG kwaito sensation Sihle “Madizah” Xulu will be shooting a music video this weekend for his newest single Bamba la. The single was released on iTunes in December but he has only just started doing promotional work for it in order to encourage downloads and increase his fan base. “My fans can look forward to something new and fresh. The video will be shot at different locations in Pietermaritzburg by a well-known producer who has done a number of videos for other artists.” The kwaito star, a professional graphic designer is not new to the entertainment industry. He started making music in 2006 when he was part of the Amaqola Crew and later collaborated with Madida to form a duo that composed the hit song Impilo yaseb’suku, which featured Makokorosh from Ngwelezane. “I started doing music at school and was also in the church choir, this was back at Empangeni where I grew up. I got into kwaito because I liked the sound. I grew up listening to Mdu and Magewu, who for me, were the originators and pioneers of the genre. Listening to their music inspired me to come out on my own.” The musician is a regular performer at music festivals around the country, and recently performed at the annual Impi event alongside DJ Christos and Monique Bingham. “I am currently working on my album, which is due out in July, but for now I’m doing the groundwork and

UTTING in extra work and ensuring her pupils get exceptional results has earned Fundokuhle Secondary School mathematics teacher Bukiswa Mamane recognition in her fraternity. Mamane has made the shortlist at the National Teaching Awards after being nominated by her colleagues. She is nominated in the Excellence in Mathematics Teaching (FET) category and will be representing KwaZulu-Natal nationally. “I was very surprised when I found out my subject advisors had chosen me as a suitable candidate for the awards. I don’t do my work because I want to seek fame, all that matters is that my pupils receive a proper education and enjoy themselves while doing so. Being nominated only makes me want to work even harder because I love my job.” The National Teaching Awards were launched in 2000 as a way for the Department of Basic Education to acknowledge and encourage dedicated and caring teachers in their efforts to develop each pupil. Mamane has been teaching for 13 years and started at Fundokuhle in 2009. “I try to make my lessons more interactive and engage with my pupils more; I also use my laptop to display the work we’re doing on the projector so they have an idea of what we are talking about in practicality. They catch on really quickly if you give them a chance to talk in class, this also allows them to come up with their own methods for sums and I end up learn-

Bukiswa Mamane with her Grade 12 pupils. ing from them.” She said her teaching style also involves consulting after hours with her pupils on Facebook or WhatsApp. “They all have my cell phone number and know they are welcome to contact me should they get stuck while doing homework. I am always available on WhatsApp or Facebook after hours, whichever is easier for them. I also stay at school until 4pm every day for one-on-ones, they know my door is always open. “At the beginning of the year I give my pupils their yearly learning programme so they keep track of how far we are with our lessons and what’s still to come. That way they can also prepare for lessons ahead.” Mamane’s passion for teaching drove her to initiate Saturday classes and other teachers have followed suit. “I have morning classes every day at 7am before the normal day com-

mences. We also have Saturday classes from 8am to 12pm, which have now formed part of the schools normal routine. All teachers voluntarily come in for those few hours to put in the extra work, the improvement in our matric results pass rate is evidence of that work. It makes all the difference that our pupils are just as dedicated.” Fundokuhle received a 70% matric pass rate in 2016 and Mamane said this year they are aiming for 100%. “The role of a teacher is to create brighter futures for all children that walk to your classroom. A good teacher must always develop themself; you cannot use the same teaching methods that were used 20 years ago. Go with the evolving times and use modern methods that are relevant to your pupils. Never stop learning, even from your pupils,” she said. The National Teaching Awards will be held in March.

If I only listened to kwaito I would end up copying other people’s style and sounds and lack originality.” Xulu’s music video will be released in a month’s time.

>> umalo x N a n o h Nkosik e in Swapo A m left his ho cember on 22 De LUCKY KHANYILE

T

HE family of a special needs child who went missing over a month ago in Copesville is losing hope of ever finding him. Nkosikhona Nxumalo (12), left his home in Swapo A on 22 December to play with other children, but never returned. His aunt Khombisile Nxumalo said the family don’t know what to do anymore and have looked everywhere for him. “Nkosikhona left at around 9am and we thought he was playing with his friends as usual. He never played far from home. We became worried when he didn’t show up in the afternoon. “I went around the neighbourhood asking if anyone had seen him. His friends said he told them he was going home after they had finished playing.” Nxumalo has been taking care of Nkosikhona since his mother died when he was two. “The pain is unbearable especially for his grandmother. She is sick and can’t stop asking about him,” she said. The short, light-skinned boy was last seen wearing grey shorts and a purple T-shirt. He attends H.S. Ebrahim School in Northdale.

Boy disappears family ‘losing hope’

Nxumalo described the boy as a shy, kind and quiet child . Missing Child South Africa National case officer Bianca van Assegen said they will not close the case until they find the child. “We ask the public to have eyes and ears wide open for any information which might assist,” she said, adding they had not lost hope of finding him. “Gundi”, as he is known to his friends, is the youngest child in his family. He has a 19-year-old brother. The family relies on Nkosikhona’s social grant to put food on the table. “The saddest part is not knowing if he is alive or if he has eaten, for that matter. No parent should go through what we are experiencing,” Nxumalo said. “Last week, we went with the police to a farm not far away known as Bhobho. We heard he was seen in the area, but when we arrived there was no sign of him. “Life is no longer the same at home.” According to Missing Children SA, of the 10 children who disappeared from December 2015 to August 2016 in KZN, nine were found, which gives hope to the Nxumalo family. The Department of Education urged the public to work with police. “We have full faith in the police that they will work tirelessly to bring the boy home. We urge the parents not to lose hope,” said spokesperson Kwazi Mthethwa.

Police spokesperson Captain Gay Ebrahim said police have worked around the clock to search for the boy. “Our station has carried out numerous visits to hospitals and other places as

8 ECHO Little one’s life about to change maritzburg

>> Australian doctor to do reconstructive surgery on the five year old NICOLE JOHN >>news@myecho.co.za

L

EAH Goss is on her way to being the first South African recipient of an Australian doctor’s first bladder reconstructive surgery this month after being born with bladder exstrophy, the protrusion of the urinary bladder through a defect in the abdominal wall. The five-year-old was born with the defect that was not picked up during her mother Chantelle’s, pregnancy. After undergoing major surgery just after she was born in an attempt to repair the defect, Leah was left with a protrusion in her abdomen, which led to urine leaking from her body and has been confined to nappies for the rest of her life. Her condition has now affected her kidneys that are overworking to compensate for her issue, and, because they are overworked, sometimes do not filter her urine properly, resulting in her urine burning her. “She was born with just parts of her bladder, but nothing functional. In September last year we took her to a doctor in Bloemfontein who

thought he would be able to help repair her bladder, but when he got in [the child] he told us that things didn’t look good and he wasn’t able to do the operation. “He told us about Doctor Paddy Dewan, a specialist in bladder exstrophy in Australia. Our doctor emailed him and he [Dewan] made contact with us and agreed to come to South Africa to perform the surgery. “All our medical bills are covered because the hospital and doctors in Bloemfontein are helping us out. We do, however, need money for the doctor’s accommodation and our travel to the hospital,” said Chantelle. She added the family needs to travel by car to Bloemfontein and cannot take the bus because of Leah’s comfort after the procedure is complete. The Goss family need R10 000 to cover their main expenses and are appealing to the public as their last hope to assist them in any way to raise the funds. “This is our last hope. We are desperate. We hope the public will open their hearts. This surgery is guaranteed to help Leah, we are doing this for her, we just want to be able to give her

the chance to have a normal life,” said Chantelle. Leah and her parents Norman and Chantelle are expected to leave for Bloemfontein on 22 February for her surgery to take place on 27 February at 7am. The surgery is expected to last about eight hours.

For more information, or to help, contact Chantelle on 074 018 3751.

Mayor’s 100 days in office >> The municipality is dedicated to providing its residents with a safe environment

Msunduzi Mayor Themba Njilo recent ly delivered his 100 days in office report.

NICOLE JOHN >>news@myecho.co.za

M

SUNDUZI Mayor Themba Njilo recently presented his 100 days in office speech at a full council meeting highlighting his journey since his inauguration in August last year. Njilo said he prioritised meeting with all the relevant stakeholders in the city in order to build strong, lasting relationships during his term in office. He held numerous imbizos, conducted various site visits as well as overall community visits during the three-month period. Njilo’s Mayoral Special Programmes are targeted at vulnerable groups, youth, children, people with disabilities and senior citizens. The implementation of these programmes is done in consultation with ward councillors and ward committee members. In his report he stated that the municipality is dedicated to providing its residents with a safe environment and as such as strengthened partnerships with the SAPS and Safe City in order to monitor crime in some of the crime hot spots around the city. Njilo has also been at the forefront of increasing infrastructure and fast-tracked various road, electricity and community hall developments. The Brookside Taxi Rank was also opened last year in order to alleviate traffic congestion in the CBD.

“The municipality has been able to construct 31 bus shelters. In terms of water and sanitation, 3.7km of new sewer pipes have been installed and 3.5km of water pipes have been constructed. “While pockets of success are notable there are a number of projects that are behind schedule, which will need contingency plans from the municipal manager to ensure that managers spend and projects move at the desired pace,” said Njilo in his report. He added the municipality has opened up communication platforms for various stakeholders to ensure that the city is accessible to all. Njilo said the municipality remains committed to creating a clean, green city and although challenges were faced in terms of waste management by way of a strike last year, the municipality have taken proactive steps to deal with the matter. “All the necessary action is being taken to address the problems encountered during and as a result of the strike.” He said the municipality plans to increase capacity in its workforce and has advertised positions internally. “Although there is still some ground to be covered the positive and constructive atmosphere between the councillors from all parties within the council is encouraging. “The spirit of patriotism is clearly demonstrated by the robust discussions at some of the committee meetings.”

IPHIWE Ngcobo has become a pioneer in the hospitality industry and has received numerous accolades as the owner and boss of iLawu Hospitality Group. The multimillion-rand iLawu Hospitality Group own a chain of threestar hotels and a guest house in KwaZulu-Natal and employs more than 100 full-time people. Last Friday, Ngcobo was the first of successful black entrepreneurs from the city to share his entrepreneurial journey at the Indlela ibuzwa kwabaphambili business workshop held at his iLawu Guest Lodge in Scottsville. The workshops aim to inspire upcoming and new Pietermaritzburg and district business entrepreneurs. Sharing his journey and how his company is run like a well-oiled machine, the Italian-trained mechanical engineer said he has always had a knack for business. “After finishing matric in 1998, I was not sure what I wanted to do and the finances at home were tight so I started manufacturing ice-lollies. “The key to being a successful entrepreneur is taking advantage of opportunities that are available to you. I have always been involved in entrepreneurial activities in my life. I enjoyed trading and selling my stock and convincing others to buy,” he said. In his address Ngcobo measured reasons some businesses are more successful than others. “I have seen great businesses fail and questionable businesses succeed. As an entrepreneur, you need to know your strengths and shortcomings. Know where you need to compensate, there will be influences around you,

but the strength of your idea and your confidence will determine the success of your business. Know your story and don’t duplicate other people’s ideas.” The 37-year-old, who started his hospitality business in 2009, said being a resident in one of the hotels in Italy inspired him to open his business. “The idea of owning a hotel was born there, but I didn’t entertain it. I was in that environment for too long and ended up adapting and liking what was happening. “When I came back to South Africa I worked at the mines, saved money and came back to Pietermaritzburg to start something. “I opened a computer business, but it didn’t survive. I didn’t read the market correctly and lost R300 000 in that business. I was dismissed at Hulamin because I was moonlighting between my job and managing the private business.” As luck would have it seven months after he was dismissed from Hulamin Ngcobo was reinstated and paid back his six months salary. “I took the job back, but months later I resigned as I wanted to focus solely on business because it was my passion. “I invested my money in business and in 2006 started investing in property. In 2009 I opened my first bed and breakfast guest house. “Initially, the plan was to build student accommodation around Scottsville, but when I walked into this house, I inspected the rooms and saw a bed and breakfast guest-house set up. “The student accommodation idea

went out of the window and I knew the hospitality business was ideal for me. I wanted to change the bad reputations of B and B’s in Pietermaritzburg and add value with my business.” In 2009 his business made a turn-

over of R1 000 000 and in 2010 he bought his boutique hotel in Prestbury, the Ilawu Inn. Ngcobo cautioned that as an entrepreneur it is important to be honest, credible and vigilant of your brand.

Today, iLawu Hospitality Group has grown at a dramatic rate, they run an events and catering division and own a string of hotels around KZN, including a luxury guest lodge in Newcastle.

FAST-GROWING modelling agency is making its mark in the modelling scene around Pietermaritzburg and surrounding areas. Co-owners of Intsha yoMzansi Modelling Agency, which was established in 2010, Thandokuhle Dlamini (36) and Lucky Mthembu (26), said it is their determination and passion of working with the youth that is the driving force behind the agency’s success. “The agency offers basic life skills and modelling etiquette, which is the base of professionalism in this industry. We groom these young people to succeed in all spheres of life using modelling as a tool to help channel their inner greatness,” said Mthembu. She said their agency works mainly with youth from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and rural areas. “We looked at all the social ills that exist in these communities and decided to use modelling as an angle to combat them while also equipping these young people with valuable life skills. Our aim is to produce models that can confidently compete on a national stage against those from other recognised agencies.” Mthembu, also a professional model and Masters student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal joined the agency last year as a way of giving back to the Pietermaritzburg community. She was crowned first princess in Miss SA Teen in 2009 and in 2012 entered the Miss South Africa pageant

I modelled for big

clothing retailers like the Hub, Jet, Mr Price and worked with True Love and Grazia magazines on fashion spreads.” Intsha yoMzansi models have walked the ramp at some of the country’s top fashion shows, including the Vodacom Durban July. The agency was also nominated in the KZN Young

Achievers awards and Indondo awards in 2012 respectively. Dlamini said when he established the agency he didn’t have a clear plan. “I have no background in modelling whatsoever, but in 2004 I was involved with a couple of friends in organising beauty pageants in Imbali - this was back in 2009. I enjoyed working with

young people and helping them realise their talents and I guess the love grew from there.” Dlamini said he is proud their models have represented the agency in various contests across the province. The agency offers a modelling programme with four courses a year each lasting three months.

Closure of beer hall a wise decision THE OLD Ematsheni Beer Hall should be taken, treated and classified as a heritage building. The national, provincial and local government should understand and work together to fulfil that mission, although the history behind this complex may reflect on bad yester-years or the apartheid government because the system was to divide South African racial groups when socialising. The plan and the message was clear from the onset - the Ematsheni Beer Hall was built for the black hostel

dwellers where they were daily regulars in quenching their thirst. Originally sorghum beer - mqombothi and juba - was introduced to attract blacks and distributed mainly in the area where black people lived. As a proud Maritzburger and Msunduzi resident, for the municipality to shut it down was a wise decision, although the timing will always challenged. All Pietermaritzburg-Msunduzi residents, especially business owners downtown, taxi owners, drivers, the

municipality and SAPS knew very well that the historical Ematsheni Beer Hall has become a hub of criminals, a base for drug lords and runners, shelter for vagrants and even for the ordinary street children. The problem had been left by the municipality, SAPS and various government structures on the back shelf for a long time and eventually became big and uncontrollable. The beer hall has become a social, political and financial problem for the City of Choice.

IFP vindicated on Treasury issues THE Inkatha Freedom Party in Kwa ZuluNatal feels vindicated on the issue of the irregular goings on in the KZN Treasury after the KZN premier intervened and over ruled the MEC of Finance, Belinda Scott, who threatened to take the report of former public protector Thuli Madonsela on judicial review. As the IFP, we have been very vocal on the issue of the alleged corruption that is happening in the KZN Treasury and the fail

ure of the MEC to implement the former public protector’s remedial action as stated in her “Rocking the Boat” report, which ex posed the abuse of power and victimisation of a whistleblower, Fikile Hlatshwayo Rouget. Premier Willies Mchunu has done the right thing by displaying leadership and tak ing a stand in this matter and we commend him for this. It is this kind of leadership that will take our province forward. We urge the

premier to institute a thorough investiga tion into the dealings of the Treasury and root out corrupt elements once and for all. We raised serious concerns about the al leged abuse of public funds after the provin cial government paid R25 million for the Durban North Sea Jazz Festival, an event that did not take place and years later that money is still to be recovered. We raised this issue among many others in the legislature at a press conference in November 2016, but

The municipality must be congratulated for stopping the crime around the complex and for shutting down Ematsheni Beer Hall, however, we must ask what the municipality’s next step or plan B is for the area. Some of us feel that maybe the new plan, project and developments will be good for our city and hopefully will improve business opportunities for residents and investors to Pietermaritzburg. On another note, some of us think that nothing is being done by the

municipality, local and provincial government and its security agencies to stop the crime and rid the area around Retief Street and nearby areas of vagrants. Why are patrol vans not highly visible around that area and why are SAPS satellite stations and the SANDF not urgently deployed around the area to sort the crime problem out?

we were threatened with legal action that did not materialise. At the press conference we presented a detailed report of some of the damning dealings in Treasury and called for the im plementation of the public protector’s di rectives, including the reinstatement of HlatshwayoRouget. We were not taken seriously, despite the fact that attempts to sweep alleged corrup tion involving Treasury under the carpet were brought to light. Since taking office, Scott has promised to run a clean ship and root out corruption and wasteful expendi

ture, but she has not lived up to her promise. The IFP will not succumb to threats of legal action when we are confident of the facts at hand. We commend the bravery of HlatshwayoRouget and call upon all other officials who have the best interest of the citizens of KwaZuluNatal at heart to come forward with evidence of wrongdoing with out fear of victimisation. The IFP will stand by you as we fight for the people we are called upon to serve with honesty and integrity. BLESSED GWALA IFP leader, KZN Legislature

JERRY BARNES Via email

ANC uses suffering to suit political agenda THE Democratic Alliance is committed to a twostate solution with Jerusalem as the shared capital. This in cludes a return to the 1967 boarders, an end to the settlement expansions as well as the controversial wall and the right of return of refugees. The right to Palestinian selfdetermination and the establishment of their state is indisputable and must be a reality if peace is to prevail. The sooner the settlements cease, the earlier this can be achieved. While millions around the world pray for peace in this strifetorn region, the ANC uses the opportunity to stoke emotions despite its own glaring hypocrisy. This manufactured rage does not assist in achieving the desired outcome and is energy which should be directed to solutions instead. The party’s president has asked people not to trav el to Israel or Palestine except if it to promote peace. Yet ANC MPs in departments such as water and sani tation have already been there. Meanwhile, people of the Abrahamic faiths will travel there for religious pur poses anyway, despite the ANC president’s call. Out on the street, the ANC openly supports the BDS movement. Yet their MPs in the trade and industry portfolio have made it abundantly clear that trade re lations between the countries will persist and that

their deployees in the department of home affairs will establish other working relationships. Meanwhile, the question of the sales of military hardware remains unanswered, and the collaboration in the intelligence sector continues. We have heard of weakkneed, peacemaking ef forts from the ANC, but the truth is that since Madiba’s era there has been nothing by noisy and empty rhetor ic. In contrast, the DA has made strides to begin a process of trade which includes the Palestinian au thority. Diplomatic ties, despite civil society calls to sever this, remain strong. And rightfully so, so that all channels of communication remain open and the doors of dialogue are not shut. This is vital in ending atrocities and ensuring peace. The ANC’s latest pronouncements are typical of everything it stands for. The suffering of people, no matter where they live, must never be used to suit a political agenda. The tactic, of trying to divide South Africans, is simply a pathetic effort to deflect from its own miserable track record when it comes to service delivery. The people of South Africa will no longer be fooled. Dr Imran Keeka, MPL Democratic Alliance, KZN

Valentine of heartbreak EVERY February the media goes into overdrive promoting love and affection in the form of Valentines. Valentine’s Day, like other events that are hyped up by the media, are money-making tools, clever marketing that manipulates your emotions to get into your wallet. Yet with all this supposed romance in the air, statistics show that instead of Valentine’s Day being a day of love, there are more break-ups and divorces at this time in the Western world than at any other time of the year. The media thrives on peddling fantasy reality and if we buy into their hype, we feel quite bitter when these fantasies do not materialise.

For the many whose Valentines and fantasies are not realised or who do not receive a Valentine’s card or gift, this period can be one of the most depressing times in the year and this does not affect adults only, children at school are more affected by their relatively fragile emotions. We need to take hard look at our lives and see the direction we are heading to and the challenges that face our children. Take notice of your own feelings and special notice of your children on 14 February and gauge the effect this has in our lives. A.S.E. Ameen Mountain Rise

Women revere attention and respect SIMPHIWE MKHIZE A SUNDAY newspaper carried an interesting piece on why married women resort to cheating after the excitement of a relationship and marriage has diminished. The newspaper quoted findings of a dating website called Victoria Milan that explains why women resort to throwing themselves into the arms of another man other than their married or regular partner. The website findings cite being given attention, respect and preserving the spark of the relationship as among the key things that are a sure turn-off to women if their partner fails on these.Interesting and relevant as these findings are, it would seem though it may not be easy for people who have been together for many years to live up to the challenge of giving each other attention, respect and keeping the flame of the relationship burning in the same way as it did when they started it. It must be borne in mind that even though familiarity may not breed contempt, it still takes off the wedge of admiration. This saying cannot be unfounded because we are human beings. Therefore the responsibility to keep the flame burning must be a mutual effort. As a pragmatist, it would be unfair for women to expect men to be as excited about the relationship if they are not making an effort to be attractive, exciting, stimulating and alive as they were when the relationship started (if they were). The only part of the research findings that I take blame for as a man is the issue of respect. It is difficult to absolve men from blame for failure to respect the feelings of their women, especially on the question of immorality or infidelity. As much as I can understand how some men may gradually lose respect for their partners if they are a drain on their resources, or unemployed, I fail to appreciate how we, as a male species, continue to fail to respect the feelings of our women, especially in relation to the issue of seeing other women while in a serious relationship or married to a particular woman. However, I must say that I agree with the website findings, which clearly recognise that generally women are people of conscience weary of tarnishing their reputation or character and that of their families.

Hence, these findings paint a realistic picture of how women may wish to see someone else while married or in a regular relationship with a man, but find themselves having to refrain from doing so or not sustaining that relationship before it is too late or the male partner gets to know about it. According to the website findings, women have a tendency to be mindful of how they are perceived by friends, neighbours, relatives, colleagues and society in general. I suppose the role of a woman as a prime nurturer with a role of guiding and building character in their children, propel them to want to do the right thing as much as possible. But obviously, this is not to give them too much credit for high morals because after all they are simply human beings who cherish attention, respect and a sustainable glow in the relationship. Sadly, a continued absence of these things does tempt them to have their secret liaisons, just like their male counterparts do. In my experience, I find that doing stuff together does boost the quality of the relationship. Even if it means washing the dishes while she cooks or attends to children, or sweeps the floor while she does laundry. Taking a drive or walk to nowhere rekindles the romance. Experience shows that giving someone respect and attention comes in different ways and it’s a sign of appreciation, reverence and acknowledgment. I don’t necessarily think all women are looking to be showered with praise, flowers and gifts at every turn of the relationship, even though there may be less matured women who do want to be bombarded by these things as a way of life. In my experience as an adult male, I have observed that being able to tell a woman she looks beautiful when she has combed her hair neatly, and ensured that her clothes are ironed properly, and that the shoes she bought two years ago still fit her perfectly, go a long way to showing her that you notice her and that you like what you see. Needless to say, it takes two to tango, meaning women must do the same too because human beings are egotistic creatures, who wish to be noticed, cared for, and loved. • Simphiwe Mkhize writes in his personal capacity.

Schools athletic champs held NOKUTHULA KHANYILE >>nokuthula.khanyile@media24.com

A

TOTAL of 25 primary and high schools from Imbali circuit gathered at the Imbali Unit 1 sports field last Thursday and Friday to take part in the Imbali Ward Athletics Championships. The pupils competed in soccer, netball, chess, cricket, high jump and indigenous games. The championships take place annually and pupils who come first and second get to compete at circuit level, which includes schools from Edendale and Umgungundlovu. Imbali ward athletics convener Themba Ndlovu said the championships are held to develop pupils’ potential through sport. “We use these championships to avert social ills, it’s a way we try to ensure that our pupils don’t get involved in drugs and other things that could sabotage their future. “There are pupils, who are average in the classroom, but excel in sports, and this is a way we try to cultivate that talent. We also believe a healthy mind makes a healthy body and that its important for pupils to always be active.” Ndlovu said from circuit level the pupils move to district level. “From district-level pupils they move to compete in provisional level and then winners will compete nationally where they will represent the province with other pupils who have made it at that

level.” Chairperson of the Imbali Schools Sport Council Manqoba Ndlovu said over the years the event has faced many challenges, including that of inadequate sponsorship. “We don’t have support from the Department of Health in terms of stationing ambulances to assist pupils in case of emergency. Being from previously disadvantaged communities we also face a serious challenge of a shortage of proper equipment, this ends up depriving the talent of our pupils.” Ndlovu said the championships are held because they believe sports stars should be groomed in their formative years. “Life growth starts at primary school level, this is where we need to make sure social needs are being supplied in order to assist our pupils to reach their full potential whether on the field or in the classroom. “We should get full support from stakeholders like Msunduzi Municipality and the Department of Sports and Recreation should come on board and form part of this event. It’s sad that schools have to put in their own resources to participate in such an event,” said Ndlovu. He said this was worrying because the national Department of Sports and Recreation has a national schools sports programme aimed at sports development in all schools and they should also benefit from it.
