A number of reasons to celebrate MANY people either look forward to the festive pe­ riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc­ tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season.

Families left stranded after City guards demolish homes “I was shocked when this group of men arrived at my house and started stripping everything.

OME residents of the Nkululeko informal settlement in Northdale spent a chilly night in the open after Msunduzi Municipality security guards demolished their homes.

“I had gone to town to search for a job and when I came back I found that my shack had been destroyed with the roof lying on the ground. I have three small kids and have nowhere else to take them,” resident Nobuhle Sikhakhane said.

She was part of dozens of Nkululeko residents whose shacks were targeted by Msunduzi’s anti-land invasion unit.

Nonkululeko Ndlela (39), who was at home with her unemployed husband when members of the unit pounced, said the Msunduzi security

“As the community of Nkululeko, we were scheduled to meet Msunduzi mayor Themba Njilo in the next few days so that the concerns of the residents and that of the municipality could be discussed.

“However, we were shocked when the security guards started destroying our houses.”

There are over 100 families living in the informal settlement, with some residents having been there since the early 1990s.

“We expect the municipality to assist us by fixing the streets and delivering basic services such as running water and electricity, but what we get is the destruction of our houses by a government that is supposed to be looking after us,” said Thulani Ndlovu, a resident since 1996.

Msunduzi Municipality could not be reached for comment.

CCORDING to Mountain Rise Police spokesperson Gay Ebrahim, the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Umgungundlovu North Cluster has witnessed a recent spike in fraud cases where vehicles are advertised in newspapers and on the internet.

He advised the public to be aware of these scams in order to combat them this festive season.

“Innocent victims are falling prey to these advertisements and depositing money into

accounts of the fraudsters that have set up these fake sales without having viewed the vehicles or establishing the legitimacy of the sale,” said Ebrahim.

Ebrahim said that after the victims deposit the money into the fraudster’s account, they soon realise that it was a scam when they wait for the vehicles that are never going to be delivered.

They then find out that the said company or individual does not actually exist.

“We are appealing to the community to be extremely cautious when purchasing items on the internet and newspapers and ask that individuals make sure that they

verify products before purchasing or making any payments,” “We know that victims are often pressurised into depositing monies immediately by being fed lies that the items have plenty of buyers and that stock will run out if they do not act.

Out of desperation, they purchase the products and fall victim to these fraudsters,” said Ebrahim.

Ebrahim has urged the public to come forward should they know of anyone or have ever been a victim of the modus operandi to contact their local police station or Crime Stop at 0860 10111 immediately.

THE Pietermaritzburg Regional Court recently convicted and sentenced forty-year-old Msize Mvelase, from Taylors Halt, for the rape of a 14year-old girl that took place in January.

The victim was approached by the accused whilst on her way to the shop.The accused told her that he was looking for someone and asked her if she knew that person.

He then grabbed her and dragged her to the nearby bushes where he raped her. The victim immediately went home and reported the incident to her aunt.

As they were discussing the incident,members of the community came to them with the suspect as someone from the community had witnessed the girl being dragged into the bushes. With the assistance of community members, they apprehended the accused and handed him over to the police.A case of rape was opened at Taylors Halt Police Station and was assigned to the Plessislaer Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for investigation.

The accused made several appearances in court and was kept in custody until he was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment.— Supplied.

ORMER president Jacob Zuma, in the midst of facing criminal charges for his role in the government’s arms deal in the 90s, embarked on a political campaign in Pietermaritzburg on Monday, urging people to vote for the ANC. Speaking to a large crowd of commuters at Ematsheni Taxi Rank and Freedom Square Centre, he said it is important for people to understand that the ANC does not belong to any individual but it belongs South Africa.

As he addressed them, supporters cheered on in agreement.

“ANC is not an individual. If a person takes an individual and makes it more important than the ANC, then that person is not politically wise. The ANC is more important than an individual,” Zuma said.

He then asked supporters to stop punishing the ANC because of certain individuals within the organisation, saying: “If there is an individual that you differ with, you need to put your differences aside, go and vote and make sure that the ANC wins. After the elections come back, sit down and sort out your differences.”

He said ANC members need to stand together and fight to make sure that they succeed in the next year’s election.

N 18-YEAR-OLD hip-hop artist from Azalea is set to release his first extended play (EP),titled Via Gauteng Destiny, in January next year .

Sbusiso Makhoba, who is currently in Grade 11 at Ikusaselihle High School, joined the music industry in 2014.

Speaking to Echo,he said he previously only released singles.

“I wanted to make sure that when I release an EP, I give people who love my music nothing but the best.

“The EP will have 10 tracks and they are all guaranteed to shake people up as they have a strong message for everyone.

“I have worked very hard to get to where I am today and releasing my first EP is like a dream come true for me,” he said.

Sbusiso released a single last Friday titled Busuku nemini.

He said that when he was growing up he listened to Zola 7, who inspired him a lot in passing a message to the youth through music.

“To me this is more than just singing; I want to inspire,motivate, and encourage youth to stand up and fight all the social ills because they are destroying our future.

A

FTER being in operation for just over a year , the KhanyaBha Academy for Mathematics received its first funding.

The academy received a cheque for R284 000 from Eskom, which was officially handed over to them last Wednesday at the Technical Vocational Education and Technology (TVET) College Plessislaer Campus.

Eskom became the first company to fund the organisation since it’s establishment.

The academy came into operation in March last year with 77 pupils which has now escalated to 175,who attend lessons.

The lessons are held on Saturdays at the Technical Vocational Education and Technology (TVET) College Plessislaer Campus from 8 am to 11 am.

Rare Msomi, one of the founders of the organisation and a former maths teacher, said they are very grateful to Eskom and they will be using the money to buy the equipment that they need to continue with their job.

He said they are very encouraged that Eskom saw potential in them and decided to make this donation.

OCAL 23-year-old model Lorraine Govender says she still cannot believe that she is one of the finalists in the Miss Eagle South Africa 2018 national pageant.

Govender who lives in the CBD entered the competition in December last year and she has been doing so well that she made it to the finals, set to take place on December 17 at the Barnyard Theatre, Suncoast Casino, from 7pm.

Speaking to the Echo, Govender said she is very confident that she will bring the crown home but having more people vote for her will increase her chances of winning.

“Even though I am still trying to come to terms with the fact that I am a finalist, I know I am ready for this competition but I will also need votes from my people in Pietermaritzburg.

“What makes this competition even more special for me is that it is my first national competition and it took so much courage for me to enter it.

“It is like a dream come true for me.

“I am pleading with people to please vote for me. I can already see myself on that stage, being announced as a winner,” she said.

“When I saw this competition, I saw it as something that will help me learn a lot and be able to come and plant back whatever I have learnt in the competition to the young girls in my city of Pietermaritzburg.

HE Voice of Pietermaritzburg (Vop) Facebook group has appealed to the public in light of the festive season upon us to donate to their cause and offer their help in providing food boxes for the under privileged this December.

Vop founder Michelle Stevens said that the group is busy with a variety of festive season projects for the poor and would appreciate any help from the

public.

“One is appealing to businesses, schools, book clubs and even individuals to help us collect non-perishable food items for our December food boxes and we will provide shopping lists if need be,” said Stevens.

Recently, Vop event organiser Deidre De Wee started to supply under privileged schools with lunch before and after their exams after a pupil had,via Facebook, requested a meal as he was desperate and had not eaten.

“Since then we have supplied a

What should be a period of rest and relaxation as young people make the transition between school and further studies, is often marred by questions about “what if”.

“It’s important to be able to use this time to reflect and look forward to future plans, but because there are so many possible scenarios that may arise from one’s Matric results, this time is too often spent stressing — both on the part of learners and their parents or guardians,” says Dr Gillian Mooney, Dean: Academic Development and Support at The Independent Institute of Education, South Africa’s largest private higher education institution.

“Instead of stressing, now is the time to consider what you can control

and to let go of what you cannot control. For example, the exams are over — you cannot change the outcome, or the exam results. What you can control is how you react to this outcome, and you can start to plan for a range of possible outcomes,” she says.

“If you know what to do after receiving your results, regardless of what the outcome may be, you’ll be able to relax and regroup so that you enter the new year refreshed and ready to take on the next phase of your life,” she says, adding that parents and guardians in particular need to get in the right frame of mind ahead of the release of the results, so that whatever happens, they are wellpositioned to either help their child make a successful transition, or deal constructively with any challenges that may arise.

“Parents who are concerned that their child may not have performed

“No matter what happens in January when results are announced, knowing now how you will handle any eventuality will make for a more peaceful, less stressful December, and will go a long way towards averting unhelpful tension within families and for young adults as the moment of truth nears,” says Mooney.

A

FTER falling upon dark times in his life, designer Ryan Mckenzie from Eastwood is finally ready to release his fashion line that got him through it all.

“This collection was inspired when I looked back at my own life.

“After dropping out of varsity in 2014, everything seemed to go downhill and I felt a lot of pressure,” said Mckenzie.

He said he struggled with life as everyone around him either seemed to be studying or working and succeeding in what they were doing.

Struggling with depression, Mckenzie said he turned to God and found the courage to dream again eventually finding a part-time job and getting back into studying.

“After working and studying I then found a job in an NGO called Breakthru Community Action, where I currently work while running my clothing line,” said Mckenzie.

Having gone through various struggles,

Mckenzie said that the release of this clothing line, by him and his mother, was a direct result of the things he went through.

“The inspiration for this range comes from the struggles I have faced and those that we face in our lives, and that no matter what they are we cannot let it determine our future,” said Mckenzie, who credits the strength he has to God. Working side by side with his mother, Mckenzie says that the two are an unstoppable fashion duo who do not compare themselves to others and use fashion as a way of sharing a message of hope through their clothing.

Mckenzie says that his customers can expect his “STAY x HOPEFUL” clothing brand to feature lots of patterns and local fabrics with many different textures.

“Nothing has been easy for me and I have had to persevere through a lot.

This collection is a reflection of that and a message to all the dreamers that there is always hope,” said Mckenzie.

The “STAY x HOPEFUL” official launch will be held at the Scottsville Mall on November 21 up until November 30 from 9 am to 5 pm.

Which carries more weight? >>Does the will of the majority trump the spirit of the Constitution?

RALPH MATHEKGA THE ANC and the EFF last week moved a notch closer to amending the Constitution to ensure expropriation of land without compensation.

The parliamentary Constitutional Review Committee has adopted a report to amend the Constitution to that affect.

As the two parties would have it, the will of the majority is being expressed in this report.

If the Constitution were to be changed in this regard, it would be the most significant amendment in post-apartheid South Africa.

There are those who have already raised concerns about the procedure the committee followed, arguing that it did not take into consideration the views of those who disagreed with the amendment.

The Institute for Race Relations (IRR), for one, is heading to court to question the conclusion reached by the committee.

From where I sit, it is not a question of procedure that is in dispute. The main issue has to do

with the broader idea that the Constitution can be amended not because it is rational to do so, but simply because the majority intend to achieve a set of political goals.

The question of procedure — how many views exactly were taken into consideration in arriving at the decision to amend the Constitution — is peripheral to the grand question about how to justify such a significant amendment while remaining within the ambit of the Constitution.

South Africa’s Constitution is the supreme law of the country. This means that any law that violates it is unconstitutional.

However, one can get around this if the Constitution can be amended.

The main problem that arises in the current expropriation matter is that there are those who believe that the will of the majority at any point in time trumps the Constitution.

But nowhere does the Constitution say anything about a decision being justifiable only because it is supported by the majority.

Imagine a situation where the majority agrees

that all people shorter than 1,5 metres tall should be killed. That would be a democratic decision, but not in the interest and wellbeing of the nation.

Such an idea would be democratic yet irrational.

This is where the issue comes out: is it rational and in line with the spirit of the Constitution for Parliament to agree to amend it to ensure expropriation of land without compensation?

This question is likely to dominate court actions on the matter.

Even if the Constitution can be amended to allow for policy implementation, chances are that such an amendment will be attacked from all possible directions once it has come into effect. The attacks may happen to a point where the policy is crippled.

In a constitutional democracy, there is always a right to ask if the majority is sane in its conduct.

The best way to question the majority is to take its conduct on judicial review and assess whether it is in line with the Constitution or specific provisions of the Constitution.

There is nothing unpatriotic about referring decisions to the courts for judicial review.

South Africa has two type of adherents to constitutional democracy.

On one side is the group that believes that the Constitution is sacrosanct and should not be

touched irrespective of the challenges confronted by the society. This is the group that believes that the Constitution need not necessarily reflect society’s wishes.

On the other side is a group that believes that whatever hurdles the Constitution places on the policy of the day can be dealt with by simply amending it without first considering other ways to adapt policy to the existing constitutional demands.

This groups believes in constitutional supremacy, as long as it gets the amendments it wants.

The clash between these two groups, as we are about to see with regard to expropriation of land without compensation, demands an unavoidable conversation about what the meaning of transformative constitutionalism is in a democracy such as ours.

The question is whether a meaningful transformation of our society is possible through the Constitution, or if the Constitution is there to restrain the majority from following its own whims?

ETAILERS started getting shoppers revved up for the holidays with festive season advertising last month, and mania around Black Friday and Cyber Monday is no exception.

Black Friday falls on November 23, the traditional kick-off to the shopping season and often the busiest shopping day of the year.

Attorney receives bursary LINDIWE Khumalo, a young admitted attorney and professional assistant at UKZN’s Pietermaritzburg Campus Law Clinic, has been awarded a R120 000 bursary from SBT Civils, an engineering firm based in Ballito, to carry out the valuable community work of the University Law Clinic on gender issues, domestic violence, divorce and maintenance within indigent communities around Pietermaritzburg.

This bursary is part of SBT’s corporate social investment programme, funding community interventions for social development.

Sanjay Maharaj, an alumni of

the law school, approached SBT about funding for Khumalo.

He had recognised her potential, her work ethic and proven ability, and decided that she was a worthy recipient of this valuable investment in skills development.

UKZN law students, like Khumalo, work in the clinic offering paralegal services while receiving their practical legal training.

Here students develop essential legal skills and professional behaviours that prepare them effectively for participating in the process of building a sustainable, authentic and fair legal system.

Budgeting for January J

ANUARY for most households is a long, painful slog as the financial hangover from December starts to kick in.

A tradition of overspending and ingrained behavioural patterns conspire every year to tug at people’ s purse strings over the December holidays – the reality is that for most of us, December has become a debt trap, the repercussions of which are felt long after the champagne corks have been popped.

Sonja Visser, chief executive officer of African Unity Life, cautions consumers to be careful with their bonuses and overall spending, as this current economic cycle will be brutal and unforgiving, possibly unlike any South Africans have experienced since 1994.

“Care should be taken with your finances over this period more so than in previous years,as it will also become exceedingly more difficult to play catch-up come January and beyond. Also, resist the temptation to make new debt to settle debt. This

plunges people into a downward spiral that is very difficult to overcome, ” says Visser.

Visser urges for common sense to prevail.

“We are not suggesting people not spend money over December , but rather to look at first spending on January essentials, like school fees and uniforms and putting away some cash for things like daily packed lunches and transport.”

Also, long-held wisdoms continue to apply: try to buy cash wherever possible; the price on an item if bought on terms is exponentially higher; search for bargains; make a list of needs versus wants and don’t feel compelled to shop just because ‘tis the season’.

“The pressure over the festive season to splurge is immense and while we may fill our stockings with shiny new items for all to see, for many the struggle of the new year is a quiet, painful and cashless one, ” says Visser.

“The temptation over this period is to also cut back on crucial safety nets like insurance.Ask yourself why you got the insurance in the first place: for ease of mind for any unfortunate eventualities.”

Overall, South Africa’s economic

outlook for the foreseeable future is grim and our attitude and approach to our finances should reflect this.

In commenting on the multiple fuel price increases and its overall impact on South Africans, Stats S A painted a bleak scenario: “Indirectly , all consumers will be affected as the other goods and services they purchase increase in price to reflect the underlying increase in production costs.

“The pain is set to continue. The government’s capping of fuel price rises in September to give road users some reprieve was a once-off initiative. Energy Minister Jeff Radebe recently warned that prices would most likely continue to climb.

“With our wallets feeling much lighter, we wait with bated breath.”

Visser encourages people to cultivate a proactive attitude toward their finances ahead of the holidays and to focus their spending on essentials for January first.

“We must weigh up what is important to us in the longer term.Our lives cannot be committed to solely paying off debt, but has to be one where we have financial freedom as we chose to adopt a different money mindset,” Visser concludes.

Creating diabetes awareness T

HE prevalence of diabetes in adults is increasing worldwide, and it is predicted that by 2040, this condition will become one of the leading causes of death in South Africa.

The International Diabetes Federation (IDF), Diabetes Atlas, also estimates that one in 11 adults currently has diabetes, and globally, the condition accounts for over 12.8% of deaths among people aged 20 to 791.

However, in light of World Diabetes Day which took place on Wednesday, 14 November, Cipla’s Associate director of marketing in the portfolio Cardiovascular Diseases, Douglas Craythorne, highlighted that there are effective approaches available that can largely prevent type 2 diabetes and help to prevent the complications and premature death that can result from all types of diabetes.

“It is therefore vital that individuals at risk of developing the disease are educated on the appropriate preventative measures. Equally, individuals who have already been diagnosed with diabetes should understand how to best manage their condition.”

Type 2 diabetes, commonly referred to as adult-onset diabetes, accounts for approximately 87 91% of all cases. The disease is associated with a greater risk of heart disease and stroke.

Some of the most common symptoms include frequent urination, feeling thirsty or hungry, fa-

tigue and blurred vision.

The good news is that type 2 diabetes can be avoided in the majority of cases, by making a few crucial lifestyle changes.

This includes firstly making changes to one’s diet, for example limiting the intake of red meat and processed meats and replace it by eating more nuts, whole grains, poultry and fish.

Good fats, such as the polyunsaturated fats found in liquid vegetable oils, nuts and seeds can also help to ward off type 2 diabetes.

Finally, sugary drinks and treats should be kept to a minimum.

In addition to this, individuals should make it a priority to control their weight, as obesity also greatly increases the risk of developing this disease.

Regular exercise and quitting smoking are vital.

Individuals who already have type 2 diabetes should also try to follow these guidelines, as well as commit to the necessary interventions that their doctor recommends. Research has shown that it may even be possible to reverse type 2 diabetes through ongoing treatment and sustained, appropri-

ate lifestyle changes.

“With more and more South Africans falling prey to this preventable disease, it is becoming more vital than ever that everyone learns to recognise the early signs of diabetes and take the necessary steps to avoid becoming part of the statistic,” concludes Craythorne.

SaveAct is looking for skilled Field Officers with a track record in community development and/or training experience to render field-training to Savings Groups, supervision of community-based trainers, and support to partner organisations. The Field Officers should understand, support and promote the organisation’s objectives of setting appropriate direction for his/her small team of community-based trainers in line with broader objectives of SaveAct. He/she will facilitate training of both men and women on savings methodology, financial education and creating awareness in enterprise development. He/ she will provide constructive and regular feedback to the management and maintain focus on quality to achieve outcomes and adhere to documented procedures. The Field Officers will identify issues and problems and work to resolve them.

Requirements: Post-school qualification or equivalent. Skilled facilitators with attention to detail and methodical application of training guides. Good planning, decision-making, listening, communication, interpersonal, leadership and learning skills. Experience in participatory community-based development, fluency in Zulu and English, ability to write reports, capture data and prepare case studies. Familiarity with diverse local communities would be an advantage. Drivers licence essential.

FTER winning the recent Firemen’s Tournament, held at the Mountain Rise Astro at Mountain Rise Primary School,Hugo’s Soccer team banded together to donate their winnings to the Msunduzi Hospice Association on Friday.

“We decided on the spot that we were not going to keep the money and actually gave R500 to the runners-up in the tournament,” said Hugo’s owner Melvyn Odayan.

He added added that they also donated funds to the Cerebral Palsy Association (CPA).

Hospice chairperson Pete Jugmohan said that the money will be used for their six lucky draws that they will be running over the course of their Hospice Dance, which takes place on Saturday, December 1.
