Grade seven pupils at North Coast Primary School received career inspiration at the recent careers day at the school. Pupils dressed in aspirational costumes and were addressed by professionals hailing from different fields, including a pilot and a fireman.

HE South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) and the National Democratic Teachers Union (Nadtu) brought the Department of Education district offices in KwaDukuza to a standstill on Tuesday, August 14.

The two unions, however, had different demands.

Sadtu is demanding the removal of top officials in the district whereas Nadtu wants the removal of district director Musa Madondo.

Sadtu is demanding the removal of three officials (whose names are known to the Stanger Weekly) for allegedly selling of teacher posts and corruption within the department.

Mthembeni Zuma, Sadtu KwaDukuza chairperson, said that there is mounting evidence of the corruption from the individuals and the matter has been handed over to the provincial department.

“There are countless allegations, ranging from selling of teacher posts, hiring of teachers without appointment letters, nepotism, bribery and not following due diligence in the appointments process.

“As Sadtu, we feel as though this is affecting our schools performance in the district and we are busy consulting with the Mandeni branch for them to

On the other hand, Nadtu in the region were singing a different tune as they were demanding the removal of district director Musa Madondo who they claim was appointed unlawfully.

HE Nation Builders Arise, Shine Women’s Day celebration saw guests from different walks of life converge to celebrate the great strides women are making in society.

The event, which was aimed at celebrating but also empowering women, included a self-defence demonstration

by Humaira Khan and the KwaDukuza Martial Arts (KDMA) team and a health and fitness talk by Rae Dengler from DynamX Ladies Health Studio.

Keynote speaker at the event and Nation Builders founder Annet Michelle Sewraj called on all women present to rise up and shine in the different spheres of society.

She said that the women of South Africa have always played a significant role in challenging the policies and laws set out by government.

She compared women to the women who marched on August 9, 1956 in one of the most historic events in the struggle for freedom and women’s rights in South Africa.

Sewraj challenged the women at the event to develop the same courageous spirit and to look to change this nation and make it a better place for the generations to come.

“Women who are tasked with various roles such as wife, mother, daughter, employee, business owners etc, sometimes find it difficult to cope with the business of everyday life.

“The women were encouraged to take time to develop themselves by analysing every area of their life, including their family, careers, finances and the impact they have on society.”

She stressed the importance of having a self-development plan and working on improving areas of weakness in their lives.

Sewraj gave the women a picture of their role in society and encouraged them to work alongside their male counterparts at home and at their workplace to uplift and build strong homes and communities.

KwaDukuza deputy mayor Dolly Govender, who was also present at the event, commended Nation Builders on the great work they have been doing in the region — impacting and empowering women, youth and children.

She also added that there are many opportunities for women to rise up and find their sphere of influence in society, through business, education, agriculture and government.

The ladies enjoyed an exciting afternoon together, with food and entertainment.

They were treated to gifts and many of the ladies walked away with prizes from raffles that were run during the event.

HE Mkhize family, a child-headed household, will finally be able to enjoy the safety of shelter at their very own home following months of suffering.

Maphumulo Local Municipality Mayor Zibuyisile Khuzwayo-Dlamini, together with officials, handed over a newly built house to the family in the Kwavumbu area, in ward 8, on Friday, August 10.

The family’s previous home was damaged by a burst pipe. Thankfully, the municipality stepped in and offered to build the family a new house with the help of a private sponsorship.

The mayor acknowledged the role played by the Maphumulo Local Municipality Disaster Management team and Technical Support for

their swift response in the building of the house.

“We are happy today to have extended a hand to this family led by a young woman as we are in the month of Imbokodo.

“Today we are here to celebrate the life of mama Albertina Sisulu, a struggle icon who paved a way for the vibrant human rights in South Africa. We also wish to acknowledge Gijima Security for their contribution in making this possible,” said Khuzwayo-Dlamini.

She added that the Maphumulo Local Municipality is committed towards the advancement of women as Maphumulo Municipality celebrates and champions the equality of women.

“As the nation celebrates women’s month and the life of mama Albertina Sisulu under the theme Women United in Moving South Africa Forward, Maphumulo Local Municipality continues in committing to change people’s lives.”

a lot of inconsistency within the department and also he forcefully removed officials from the Ndwedwe office to have them work here in the district office and we are against that, so we have contacted the head office to come and address the matter,” said Ngema.

However, Sadtu disputed Nadtu’s claims as they reiterated that they are fully behind the director as he is championing routing out the corruption in the department.

The department had not made any comments with regards the matter at the time of going to press. .

NERGY efficient lighting, solar water heating, a biogas digester and a rain water harvesting system was handed over to Masisizane Early Childhood Development Centre on Monday, August 6 in Maphumulo.

Deputy Minister of Energy Thembisile Majola, accompanied by iLembe District Municipality mayor Siduduzo Gumede and Maphumulo Local Municipality mayor Matozi Khuzwayo-Dlamini, handed over the items as part of celebrating the centenary year of the late struggle icons Nelson Mandela and Albertina Sisulu.

In her welcoming remarks, Ma-

phumulo mayor Khuzwayo-Dlamini spoke about the importance of being independent as a woman and not relying on a partner or government for support.

“As women we must be determined and have vision in all that we do, like the stalwart Mama Albertina Sisulu. Women have always been in the forefront, whether it’s leading homes or communities, and now it’s time to take our rightful places in business and other fields,” said Khuzwayo-Dlamini.

Giving a message of support was Dr Thembakazi Mali from the South Africa National Energy Development Institute and Judy Herman of National Development Agency.

Founder of the Masisizane centre Mabongi Ngubane encouraged

others to start building their own legacies.

“Start today. Whatever it is that you want to do, I urge you to start today. Whatever you want to do, government or backers must find you along the way. For me, I have done what Nelson Mandela said and that is to build a lasting legacy for my community,” said Ngubane.

Mayor Gumede said, “As South Africans, we have something that other nations do not have to succeed — and that is the spirit of Ubuntu.

“Through our compassion, respect for one another and supporting each other, we can build a better society for all. The government of the day is a pro-poor government.

Policies such as free primary healthcare, no-fee paying schools, provi-

sion of housing, and the provision of free water, electricity and sanitation helps improve the lives of South Africans.”

The deputy minister thanked all role players who contributed in making sure that learning at Masisizane will be more conducive and for also promoting green energy and energy efficiency in the country.

“This is definitely what Tata Mandela and Mama Albertina Sisulu would want from us. My only request is that the community take care of this facility because it is yours,” said Majola.

The event ended with a handover of backpacks to the children, a tour of the centre as well as the start of a vegetable garden located at the centre.

STANGER M.L Sultan Secondary School, in partnership with Enduduzweni Community Care Centre and fourth year University of South Africa students Ntombifuthi Manzini and Andile Gininda, conducted a programme aimed at equipping pupils with life skills last week.

The early preventative nature of the programme focused on teenage pregnancy, substance abuse, building of positive self-esteem, empowering youth, and the importance of “goaling”.

Using knowledgeable local facilitators from the Department of Health, Education and Sports and Recreation, the pupils were armed with valuable assertiveness tools, encouraged to make informed deci-

sions and to influence positive change and create support structures that are pro youth development.

The overall aim of the programme focused on developing young educated youth who are fearless and empowered and cascading relevant, updated information and motivating pupils to develop solutions to impediments they face daily.

Ginindas’ statistical analysis found that in South Africa alone, 30% of young women have already given birth by the age of 19 years of age (Mudhovozi, Ramarumo & Sodi, 2012) and in the year 2011, over 51 000 pupils attending school had given birth (Department of Basic Education, 2013) — an astounding statistic that is very much visible in

schools in iLembe District.

Supporting this was Manzini’s academic perspective on the relationship between substance abuse and unplanned teenage pregnancy and she mentioned that prescription drugs are the new illegal drugs, based on how youth have found ways to utilise legal drugs to self-intoxicate and pin themselves on the risk board.

Enduduzweni Community Care Centre social worker and project manager Mondli Ngema encouraged parents, guardians and caregivers to play an active role in parenting and monitoring their children.

This endeavour is part of a variety of initiatives formed by mayor of KwaDukuza Municipality Ricardo Mthembu to advance a more co-ordinated communication system between the municipality and various consortia in communities to encourage public participation and provide a platform to respond to immediate issues within the ambit of the local authority.

Among issues parolees and rehabilitated inmates brought forward was that, when they seek jobs, employers discriminate against them even though they are the perfect candidate for the job. This circumstance therefore lures

HE KwaDukuza Municipality has overseen the first sitting between parolees, rehabilitated inmates and social partners to get a thorough understanding of issues faced by parolees in the municipal area, particularly their reintegration to society.

Respecting the significance and prominence of women, this pivotal meeting was presided over by the deputy mayor of KwaDukuza Municipality Dolly Govender.

Govender requested that the parolees and rehabilitated inmates play a more active role to prevent the youth

them back to the life they have escaped from.

They also indicated that, during imprisonment, they are afforded many opportunities to upskill themselves and are told that this should be sufficient for them to begin a new chapter where they ultimately become breadwinners.

However, the reality is that employers don’t trust them to give them jobs.

The rehabilitated former inmates also stated that they are not safe in their communities because every time something wrong happens they are the prime suspects and the law supports that stigma in the community.

Ongoing meetings will be held to help address their concerns.

The KwaDukuza community is urged to roll up their sleeves and donate blood at the Spring Day blood clinic at the KwaDukuza Town Hall supper room on September 1 from 9 am until 3 pm.

As I got older, I found that cooking and baking for me is quite therapeutic and my passion for food grew more and more over the years.

“Food photography played a major role. I would often post pictures of my dinner or bakes on my social media accounts [Facebook and Instagram] and would find that each time I did, family and friends would either ask to be invited for dinner with me or ask me for the recipes for the meals I’d make. Thereafter, I started blogging more on recipes that I loved, which are mainly traditional cuisine recipes developed over time by me and my mom,” said Khumalo.

“I have been working in the region over the past few years with many volunteers who have assisted in outworking this vision,” she explained.

Speaking to the Weekly, Sewraj’s colleague Desiree Gengan said Nation Builders has had small beginnings, however, Sewraj must be commended for her passion and selfless sacrifice to work towards changing and transforming this nation one life at a time.

“We wish her well for the finals of the BWA’s Regional Businesswoman Awards 2018, which will be announced on Friday, August 17 at a gala dinner which will be held at the Elangeni Hotel in Durban,” Gengan said.

It’s war in the DA opinion Adriaan Basson THE Democratic Alliance is at risk of being paralysed by low-intensity warfare between the “laptop boys” — a grouping rallying behind what they deem to be the party’s liberal core — and the “Bruma boys” — the party’s corporate leaders based at its glitzy new Johannesburg head office.

Less than a year before the party will challenge the ANC for power in national and provincial elections, DA leader Mmusi Maimane is stuck in the middle.

The tension between them burst into the public domain last week when News24 revealed that the party’s federal executive committee has rejected race as a determinant for economic redress as the party prepares its policy documents in anticipation of the election. A frantic scramble ensued after DA leaders started contradicting each other about dropping the “B” from BEE. The party ended up forcing Gwen Ngwenya, a newbie in the DA and head of policy, and party veteran James Selfe, to is-

sue a joint statement. After speaking to several DA leaders in the wake of the fallout over the BEE debate and the handling of the Patricia de Lille matter, the cracks are clear.

Last week should have been a godsend to the DA, which governs the Western Cape, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Tshwane and Nelson Mandela Bay. Ramaphoria was officially over when President Cyril Ramaphosa gave in to the populists in his party over constitutional amendments of the property clause and the world took note. The influential Wall Street Journal wrote a scathing editorial about it, comparing Ramaphosa’s policy to that of Zimbabwe and Venezuela.

The gift to the DA didn’t stop there: the world’s most important newspaper, the New York Times, sent two journalists to Mpumalanga to dig up the skeletons in Deputy President David “DD” Mabuza’s closet, which they published in a double-page spread. In terms of publicity, it doesn’t get better than this. One would have assumed that the DA would be issuing press releases, holding press conferences and tweeting away at the negative press the ANC received. But, not a bleep. Instead, the party was devouring itself over its mismanagement of the De Lille matter and the miscommuni-

cation of its new economic policy.

In the one corner are the laptop boys, a grouping that believes the DA has drifted too far from its liberal values and that it should champion free market policies and non-racialism. This grouping includes communications czar Gavin Davis; MP and influential strategist Geordin Hill-Lewis; MP Michael Cardo and Ngwenya, who is emerging as the face of the laptop boys. Chief whip John Steenhuisen and MP Dean Macpherson are said to be sympathetic to this group.

Ngwenya was sworn in as a DA MP in February after leaving her position as chief operating officer of the conservative think-tank, the Institute of Race Relations (IRR). It is well-known in the party that Ngwenya maintains close relationships with IRR CEO Frans Cronjé and Gareth van Onselen, a former DA staffer now at the institute.

There are fears that the IRR has an unhealthy influence over DA policies with Ngwenya’s appointment as head of policy.

Those opposing the laptop boys believe that their ultimate goal is to unseat Maimane, federal chairperson James Selfe and DA CEO Paul Boughey, and replace them with their own people.

The laptop boys believe the party has moved too

close to the ANC and want to consolidate its core support base, which those opposing them interpret as a move to pander to white voters.

The laptop boys, say those in the know, are opposed by the Bruma boys: Boughey, campaigns director Jonathan Moakes and polling kingpin Johan van der Berg and his team of researchers and scientists. This party moved its head office to Johannesburg earlier this year in an attempt to establish itself as a national party with regional presence.

The party’s “war room”, which continuously polls the electorate, was part of the move. Selfe is associated with the Bruma boys. Boughey is De Lille’s former head of staff and Moakes and Van der Berg are party veterans.They are accused of “overcorporatising” the party. Critics of the Bruma boys blame them for the party’s perceived indecision and slow reaction to key ANC blunders.“They keep on saying black voters don’t want more ANC negativity from the DA. Then what are we if we cannot criticise the ANC?” asked an MP. Tension in political parties is normal, but this could be catastrophic for Maimane’s chances to top the 22,2% his party scored in 2014 if he doesn’t take charge of the situation in an election year.

Campus rapes need decisive action IT must be harrowing for students who have been raped to have to endure the presence of their rapists in lecture theatres and elsewhere on campus.

Indeed, it is so intolerable that young women who are still trying to come to terms with the consequences of the rape, often drop out of university rather than face their abusers every day.

The suicide of Rhodes University student Khensani Maseko last weekend brought this unheeded aspect of rape to the notice of the general public. A report in Weekend Witness on Saturday, about a local UKZN student who had similarly tried to take her life for exactly the same set of reasons as appear to have applied in the case of Maseko, emphasises that we are not dealing with isolated cases.

The UKZN student, whose rapist had in fact been suspended from campus but was allowed back to write exams, spoke of her anger and anguish when she saw him “back on campus and ... roaming around quite freely and

pompously”. Her case appears to have been poorly handled from the start.

She was raped in March but it took until May for the authorities to pay attention, and even then she says she was mistreated by both police and health practitioners. In Maseko’s case, she was raped, by her boyfriend, in May but only reported it to university authorities late last month after having sat through the same lectures as he.

Rape is a crime which is notoriously poorly reported and prosecuted, and convictions are statistically insignificant given the prevalence of what has come to be called rape culture not only in South Africa but in countries around the world. Reversing this culture and the patriarchal relations which foster it will not happen overnight. The least that rape survivors should be able to rely on in the meantime is that support for them be prompt and decisive. Failure on this score is disastrous, and its consequences can be fatal, as Maseko’s suicide proved. -Witness Reporter

Your baby may also be kicking your ribs! Your physiotherapist will work to facilitate movement in the ribs to provide relief.

• CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME — This happens when there is a fluid buildup in the wrist that compresses your nerves. This causes pain, numbness, feelings of “pins and needles” and “puffiness” to develop in the fingers and hand.

Your physiotherapist will use ultrasound, exercises, kinesiotape, and massage to ease this fluid build-up and relieve pain.

• LOWER ABDOMINAL DISCOMFORT — This is caused by the stretching of the ligaments of the uterus as your baby grows. Your physiotherapist will aim to support the abdominal area using kinesiotape or a brace and ease the discomfort with hands-on treatment.

• BUTTOCK PAIN — Usually one sided; this most often occurs as muscles and ligaments get tight and restricted in their

• NUMBNESS/ALTERED SENSATION DOWN THE LEG — Some women may feel a variety of uncomfortable sensations in their leg(s) during pregnancy.

Mostly this is from increased pressure on the nerves in the lower back and/or the legs, either from an increase in body fluids (our blood volume increases by 40% during pregnancy), or from tight muscles.

Here, your physiotherapist will work to relieve that pressure through hands-on techniques and gentle movement.

• PUBIC SYMPHYSIS DISCOM­­FORT — This discomfort is felt below your belly button. A little extra movement can occur here as a result of the hormone relaxin allowing the pelvis to expand to support your baby. A physiotherapist will work to create some support around the pelvis and teach you how to move while, for example, turning over in bed or getting in and out of a car without experiencing discomfort.

• SWELLING IN THE FEET — During pregnancy, our bodies produce more fluids to support the baby’s growth which can result in swollen feet. Your physiotherapist may use massage, exercises, and sometimes compression socks/ stockings to treat this, and teach you how you manage this better at home.

• CALF CRAMPS — This is probably the bane for most pregnant women as it comes mainly during the night, interrupting much-needed sleep. The lower legs support the increasing weight of the upper body during pregnancy and the muscles can get tight and tired, going into cramp or spasm. Physio treatment includes heat, stretches and massage.

weeklywheels Autonomous vehicles face major stumbling block ONE of the biggest issues facing the development of fully autonomous vehicles comes from perhaps not the most obvious source — the quality of road markings.

“Clear visibility of road markings is required by autonomous vehicle sensors to work,” explained Harald Mosböck, executive committee member at the European Union Road Federation (ERF).

Mosböck was speaking at the 2018 Southern African Transport Conference (SATC) in Pretoria at which he presented “Horizontal Road Markings and Autonomous Driving — Back from the Future”.

“We have a lot of norms and standards on how lane markings in Europe should look like for the human eye, but nothing yet on how they should look like for vehicle sensors,” Mosböck added. Currently, only two vehicle sensors understand road markings: cameras and LIDAR systems. The latter is a detection system which works on the principle of radar, but uses light from a laser.

In order for fully autonomous (level 5) vehicles to work, road markings will need to be widened and maintained to a much higher standard than is currently the case.

Horizontal road markings are critical road components which, at present, cannot be replaced by any other means. Therefore, the requirements for and maintenance of

Furthermore, vehicle-to-vehicle communication is a big challenge facing autonomous vehicles. “There is a standardisation programme underway at the moment in Europe because in order for V2V to work, all vehicles will have to fully understand each other,” Mosböck said.

Not only will vehicles made in Germany, for example, have to “talk” to each other, they will also have to talk with Japanese,

Vehicle-to-infrastructure communication is also required by autonomous vehicles, which will bring the state of readiness of current infrastructure into question.

However, Mosböck believes that the biggest obstacles facing the development of autonomous vehicles are not related to technology, but rather to the lack of harmonisation, the legislation that has to be formulated, and the unwillingness of the insurance industry to insure these vehicles.

DAC, together with the Department of Education, hosted the Women’s Day Autism Fun Run on August 9 at the Stanger Manor Grounds.

Despite the cold weather and signs of rain, the event proved to be a success.

The support from the community and different schools was exceptional. KDAC thanks all sponsors who assisted in making this fun

run a success.

Manor Cricket Club celebrates 20th anniversary JYOTHI LALDAS MANOR Cricket Club celebrated its 20th anniversary at an awards banquet held at the Quartz Conference Centre on Friday night.

Guest of honour Yunus Moorad, who was the clubs coach and long-time vice president, was honoured. The club also honoured all past

cricketers, some of whom played for the Dolphins and many of whom made school and academy teams.

The highlight of the evening was comedian Mello Gilbert, who entertained with humour and song, and the guest appearance of the SonAash Sisters, who enthralled audiences with a dance fusion.
