Newly-opened academy to offer individualised learning to pupils SELINA CHETTY

HE Saints Logos Academy of Learning, located at 174 Hulett Street (Saints Church), officially opened their doors as a tutoring centre by hosting an open day for parents and pupils on Saturday, January 11.

The event saw a good turn-out from the community.

The tutoring centre, which was initiated by a group of tutors from Kwa­Dukuza who have worked with Impaq, a home-schooling service provider, realised that parents were not very pleased with learning outcomes achieved at most local schools and decided to bring this one-on-one learning experience to the town.

“We had a good turn out at the event and many parents were able to voice their concerns,” said Mrs Reddy, a tutor at the academy.

There are currently seven tutors at the academy, with around 20 enrolled pupils and, after their open day this past weekend, more pupils are expected to join this focused learning opportunity.

The academy begins at 8 am daily, with varying end times for every grade. Grade R, 1 and 2 pupils finish classes at noon daily; Grades 3 to 9 finish at 1 pm and Grades 10 to 12 at 2 pm. On Fridays, all pupils finish classes at 11 am as Fridays are dedicated “activity days”.

“All periods are 35 minutes long, however, there isn’t a time constraint for pupils who require extra attention, and the tutors are all very patient. The pupils are also given two break intervals during the day,” said Reddy.

“The academy also allows pupils to express their individuality by not confining them to wearing a uniform, however, pupils must dress appropriately,” added Reddy.

The centre, which is registered with Impaq, provides a comprehensive set of educational products based on the national Curriculum Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS) for Grade R – 12 in English and Afrikaans.

The curriculum and related solutions are designed to enable individualised learning and are used to educate pupils in schools and in a home environ-

ment.

“Our purpose is to be a communityorientated organisation and to focus on the educational needs of our community. Being a home away from home is what sets The Saints Logos Academy of Learning apart from many of the other local schools. The teachers are dedicated, and we treat each child like our own,” said Reddy.

Some of the benefits of choosing this facility include: focused individual learning with experienced staff working at the pace of the pupil; all classes will not exceed more than 10 pupils per grade; aftercare and assistance with homework is available until 5.30 pm daily; and computers with internet access are available for assistance with homework.

Learning is done in a safe and secure environment and the centre is fully airconditioned and is equipped with a canteen with a microwave and other facilities.

A tuckshop is available on premises should pupils feel hungry.

‘It’s all about teamwork and hard work’ MUSA MNYANDU THE exuberant principal of Stanger South High School, L.I. Msimango, says teamwork lies behind the excellent performance produced by his school in recent years, including last year.

The school’s Matric Class of 2019 did not disappoint either, as they produced a sterling pass rate of 93,8%, which denoted just a minuscule drop from the previous year’s pass rate of 93,9%. The school, which is tucked away at the periphery of KwaDukuza CBD, has been churning out a consistently high performance for several

years now, despite the myriad of challenges with which it has to contend.

“Our school is very old, and has not been renovated ever since. The buildings are in a dilapidated condition, and the roofs are leaking. When it is raining, we face some real challenges as rain finds its way into the classrooms, making learning and teaching extremely difficult. We have been writing to the Department of Education now and gain, to alert the department to our plight, but so far we have not had any favourable response,” stated Msimango.

He was, however, quick to indicate that the school community remained undeterred. “We have a team of dedicated educators, and our learners are always motivated to take their studies seriously. For us, it’s all about

teamwork and hard work,” he said.

The school was re-opened in 1994, after being mothballed by the apartheid government for several years. Prior to being mothballed, it used to be a Coloured school (catering for Coloured pupils), and with the advent of democracy, the school was re-commissioned to cater mainly for mature black African learners who had previously been denied access to education. No renovations were carried out. Msimango said the Matric Class of 2019 consisted of a total of 80 pupils, of whom 75 passed. The school’s top performer, Mthokozisi Khuzwayo, got two distinctions, in Physical Sciences and in Life Orientation, while the second best performer, Bella Khumalo, scored a distinction in History.

Once the department gets around to supplying the school with adequate resources, it looks almost certain that Stanger South High School will become one of the best performing schools in iLembe District.

These matric achievers from Stanger South High School say the school has prepared them well for whatever lies beyond secondary education.

Rural schools defy heavy odds MUSA MNYANDU THE perennial challenges that come with every deep rural setting do not deter schools from Maphumulo in iLembe District from achieving excellent academic outputs. This has again been attested to by the inspiring performance by Maphumulo schools in the 2019 National Senior Certificate examinations.

The Maphumulo Management Circuit was the best performing circuit in iLembe District, with its pass rate of 82,4%. To cap this achievement, eight schools from the area surprised many by obtaining a 100% pass rate. These schools are Inhlokozi High, Zephania Secondary, Siphinhlanhla Secondary, Tshutshutshu Secondary, Lethuxolo Secondary, Ndukende Secondary, Thandayiphi Secondary and Mbhekaphansi High.

Vukile High School also made its mark by producing 99% Bachelor passes, with the school’s Minenhle Majola being placed in the top five in iLembe District.

Maphumulo Mayor Zibuyisile Khuzwayo-Dlamini was full of praise for the local schools, describing their overall performance as “commendable”.

“To all those who passed, (we say) well done. Your determination and perseverance throughout your matric year have paid off. This is the first step towards making your dreams a reality. We are honoured to be associated with such hard-working individuals.

“While we honour the achievement of the learners who passed, we must not forget about those learners who did not make it this time around. We urge you to

Memorial service held to honour victims of horror crash O

N Thursday, the Acting Mayor of KwaDukuza, Councillor Dolly Govender, joined local leaders and interfaith groups to accompany the MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Bheki Ntuli, to the memorial service of the seven victims of the horrific crash which took place on the R102 between Umhlali and Shakaskraal on January 3.

The memorial service was held at the Melville Sports Ground in Kwa­Dukuza.

During her delivery of the welcome address, the host acting mayor, Councillor Dolly Govender, expressed that the council and community of Kwa­Dukuza were very sorry for the losses that the families have experienced.

She also used the opportunity to show her appreciation to the MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison as well as the MEC for Social Development for partnering with the municipality during this sad period — from the day of the horrific accident until the memorial service.

affected, including the state,” added Govender.

In her conclusion, Govender made this clarion call: “As your acting mayor, I want to urge all of you to learn lessons from these incidents.

For us in the KwaDukuza Municipality, one life lost is one life too many.”

Addressing the memorial service, the MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison conveyed words of condolence to the families and the community of KwaDukuza. He also assured those gathered that his department, working with the Road Accident Fund (Raf), will assist the bereaved families with the necessary burial arrangements.

Furthermore, he thanked the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco), the local taxi association, the Department of Social Development, interfaith groups and the Raf for coming on board to assist the affected families in ensuring that they give their loved ones befitting send-offs. — Supplied.

Mayor pleased with ‘excellent’ matric results MUSA MNYANDU

CHOOLS in Mandeni are showing an increasing trend towards academic excellence. This is the feeling of Mandeni Mayor Thabani Mdlalose, who lauded Mandeni schools for defying heavy odds to produce what can only be described as excellent matric results for the year 2019.

Mdlalose also attributed the success shown by Mandeni schools to the significant role played by stakeholders such as various government departments, teachers, parents, and the community.

Sarah Dunn from Mathubesizwe FET School was the top matric achiever in Mandeni, having amassed a total of eight distinctions, while her

school mate Sne Mbokazi notched up an impressive six distinctions.

Siphelele Ngema from Nkwenkwezi High School was not to be outdone, as he also flew Mandeni’s flag high with his six distinctions.

Overall, Mandeni Academy and Madlanga High School were the best performing schools in Mandeni after recording a 100% pass rate each, while Tugela High School came second with a pass rate of 97%.

Nkwenkwezi High School took the third position with a praiseworthy 94,9% pass rate, followed closely by Mathubesizwe FET, who grabbed fourth position with its laudable 94,8% pass rate. The fifth position was deservedly taken by Lambothi Secondary School with a commendable 93,9% pass rate.

KwaDukuza acting mayor congratulates class of 2019 THE acting mayor of KwaDukuza Municipality, Councillor Dolly Govender, joins thousands of residents in and around KwaDukuza in congratulating the iLembe Education District’s #Class­Of2019 for their 80,9% outstanding achievement in the #KZNMatricResults19.

Such an achievement augurs well for Kwa­Dukuza, which is attracting interest from both foreign and local investors who seek to establish educational institutions in our area.

The mayor wishes to categorically thank all teachers and principals who worked tirelessly to ensure that the children of SA, who are ultimately its future, are moulded to produce such results.

Govender has further pleaded with those students who have made it and have received offers to study in universities, TVETs and colleges but feel they are financially bound to proceed, to come forward and apply for financial assistance from the municipality.

Though financial assistance aid only pays monies to the sum of R5 000 (maximum), Kwa­Dukuza Municipality is based on the premise that an individual would at least be enrolled to their institution of choice and then seek financial assistance programmes that exist in that particular institution to carry on.

Applications close on Friday, January 17 at 3 pm. Application forms are available at the KwaDukuza Youth Office and at all the municipality’s libraries and administration offices.

Kime and Rubenstein get set to tackle the 2020 Dusi, together F

ORMER competitors turned work colleagues, and now K2 paddling partners, Lance Kime and Shaun Rubenstein will team up for the 2020 Dusi Canoe Marathon as they look to make the most of the three-day experience, which is set to take place from February 27 to February 29.

Both paddlers come from strong pedigree, with Rubenstein being a former marathon world champion and an Olympian while Kime is a twotime Dusi Canoe Marathon champion in both a K1 and a K2. Despite this combined record, Kime isn’t placing any serious expectations on their three-day classic in the Valley of a Thousand Hills.

“We just want to go out there and have a jol,” the laid-back Kime said. “I am pretty sure that we are not going to be anywhere close to the leaders, but we are looking forward to being on the river together and enjoying the race.”

It was a partnership that came about through the pair working for the same hiking/adventure company in Cape Town and Rubenstein had to do a bit of coaxing to get Kime back into a Dusi boat.

Kime hasn’t taken part in a Dusi since he won the race in 2016 with Andy Birkett and the former

champion is looking forward to rekindling his relationship with the race after a taste of competitive racing at the Hansa Fish in 2019.

“I was a bit reluctant at first when Ruby asked me to paddle with him because it had been so long since I had paddled Dusi.

“It’s great to be a part of the Dusi once again in some form and I was reminded of how much I enjoyed racing when I paddled Fish with Alan Houston.

“I am looking forward to being back on the river and racing as hard as we can. With that said, the Dusi is a serious challenge for us and we know that we are going to finish, it’s just a case of where we finish,” he added.

Kime had an interesting take on racing at the sharp end of the field amongst the masses and how that adds a new dimension to paddling.

“When you are at the front you are racing within yourself and are making sure that you keep a

pace that you are comfortable with because you don’t really have a gauge. But when you are in the bunch you have to worry about other boats around you so it can be a lot more difficult.

“We will definitely try and be as competitive as possible during the race but we don’t think we are going to be close to the front of the race at all!”

With over a month and a half until the Dusi kicks off, the pair will make the trip up to Kwa­Zulu-Natal for some of the pre-Dusi qualifying races.

“We’ll come and paddle the 50 Miler and the Campbell’s to Dusi Bridge as our preparation for the race. It will be interesting to see how much of the river I remember when we get back to KZN,” he commented.

Kime and Rubenstein took part in the recent Cape Point Challenge in a double ski and finished second, which might give a slight indication on their ability in a boat together.

Fifty Miler helps prepare paddlers for the upcoming Dusi ONE of the Dusi Canoe Marathon’s most important qualifying races, the 50 Miler, saw some of the top paddlers fight it out for early season honours when they tackled an important stretch of the Msundusi and Mngeni Rivers on Saturday, January 11.

The route is 38km long and incorporates some of the Dusi day one and day two’s most important rapids and obstacles, giving paddlers a chance to take on the likes of Mission rapid, the Confluence, the Big Three rapids of Thombi, Gumtree and Hippo Rocks, and the infamous Nqumeni Portage in racing conditions.

The race also guaranteed a water release from Henley Dam, which gave paddlers a chance to race on close to Dusi conditions, seven weeks out from the three-day epic at the end of February.

“The 50 Miler is always an important race because we have very few chances to go tripping these days,” the experienced Thulani Mbanjwa said ahead of the race.

“Also, the 50 Miler is a race where you will always see the top Dusi crews and so you can get a good idea

of who is going to be paddling with who and how you shape up against them.”

Mbanjwa has teamed up with another former Dusi champion in Sbonelo Khwela and the pair said they would be keeping a close eye on all the other combinations going into this year’s 50 Miler as they try to assess what sort of shape they are in.

“I always feel like you need to race hard at the preDusi races, and we are going to make sure that we do everything we can to stay with the top guys.

“If you have trained hard and stay with the top guys then you are on the right track, but if you have trained hard and get dropped, you are in trouble!” he laughed.

While many of the elite K2 crews were looking to cement their Dusi seedings at the race, many also choose to play their cards close to their chests, mindful of the popular belief that winning the 50 Miler compromises your chances of a Dusi win a month later.
