MEC calls for probe into burning of municipal vehicles MUSA MNYANDU Ndwedwe Mayor Nkosinathi Chili is concerned that the damage to municipal vehicles will impact service delivery.

HE KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Sipho Hlomuka has called for an urgent investigation into the cause of the fire that damaged four vehicles belonging to Ndwedwe Local Municipality in iLembe District.

The municipality said that on Thursday, January 2, at around 6am, municipal security personnel noticed flames erupting from the municipal parking lot. When security officers rushed to investigate, they found that a municipal bakkie was on fire. The fire quickly spread to three other vehicles, resulting in extensive damages.

Two of the vehicles were completely destroyed, while two others were partially burnt.

MEC Hlomuka has expressed deep concern at this incident and has called for a speedy investigation into the cause of this fire.

“We are very concerned by this incident. The destruction of municipal assets which are meant to bring services to our communities is very unfortunate. While the circumstances around the cause of this fire may not be clear,

we have therefore directed the municipality to ensure that this incident is properly investigated and that appropriate action is taken should it be found that it was arson,” said Hlomuka.

Meanwhile, Ndwedwe Mayor Nkosinathi Chili has expressed dismay over this incident. Chili said that this unfortunate incident was particularly concerning as it would have an adverse impact on service delivery.

He would not be drawn into speculation that foul play could be suspected, and said law enforcement agencies needed to get to the bottom of this incident.

into the cause of the fire. We are extremely disappointed. This incident will have an impact on service delivery as without the necessary tools of trade, we cannot reach the communities to whom we are supposed to deliver essential services. We have escalated this matter to the relevant law enforcement agencies for an investigation and we are hoping that the investigation will also assist us to avoid a recurrence of incidents of this nature,” the mayor concluded.

The municipal manager, Mr MF Hadebe, said that the municipality had also put together an internal task team to thoroughly investigate this incident, and to also conduct a full assessment to determine the monetary extent of the damage caused by the fire.

An investigation has been launched into the fire that destroyed two municipal vehicles and partially damaged two others.

“Overloaded” taxi capsizes, killing seven people MUSA MNYANDU

HRISTMAS certainly did not bring much cheer for some residents of Ndwedwe after about 60 houses were destroyed by a heavy storm that swept through the area.

This was not the first time that parts of iLembe District had been affected by inclement weather that is continuing to cause havoc across the province of KwaZulu-Natal.

Ndwedwe Mayor Nkosinathi Chili said the damage caused by the storm was so severe he was compelled to approach both the district and the pro-

vincial disaster management centres for relief.

One person had to be hospitalised after being struck by lightning.

A resident whose house was damaged said: “We heard the initial thunderclaps, which were soon followed by heavy downpours and gale force winds. That was when the house started to collapse around us. Fortunately we managed to escape unharmed.”

Mayor Chili visited the affected areas which included KwaMkhabela in Ward 14, Ntaphuka, KwaDonsi, Mpungeni and Juluka in Ward 13 and Mahekeni in Ward 15. At Mahekeni,

several houses were destroyed, including the Apostolic Faith Mission church building.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cogta Sipho Hlomuka has meanwhile urged communities across the province to take all the necessary precautionary measures against inclement weather patterns, in particular severe thunderstorms. “Inclement weather is persisting to cause havoc across the province.

We wish to urge communities to be disaster-wise, and to take the necessary precautions to prevent disastrous occurrences, particularly lightning strikes,” stated Hlomuka.

COMMUTERS in and around KwaDukuza are outraged after a 14-seater minibus taxi capsized at Umhlali on Friday January 3, resulting in the death of seven people.

Paramedics at the scene of the accident said that a further 13 people were treated for various injuries, ranging from critical to moderate, before being transported to hospital.

IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Paul Herbst said six of the passengers were declared dead on the scene, while a seventh person died upon arrival at hospital.

While police have opened an inquest docket for further investigation, initial indications are that the driver of the taxi lost control of the vehicle, which then plunged down an embankment and overturned.

The 14-seater minibus taxi was apparently carrying in excess of 20 occupants, which has been described by commuters on the Stanger to Ballito route as a “regular occurrence”.

Seven people lost their lives after a taxi they were travelling in capsized at Umhlali on Friday.

“They cram us in their unsafe vehicles as if we are not human beings.

All that these taxi drivers think about is money. They couldn’t care less about our safety,” said an angry commuter, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Another resident of KwaDukuza had a different take on the matter.

“Why do the passengers get into a taxi that is overloaded?

“Now these families must bear the pain of losing their loved ones.

This is truly very sad indeed,”said the resident.

Among the emergency services that responded to the accident were IPSS Medical Rescue, KwaDukuza Fire Department, KwaDukuza Traffic Department, Umhlali SAPS, SAPS Search and Rescue, KZN EMRS and Netcare 911.

“Our condolences go out to the families and friends of those involved in this tragedy.

“We would also like to thank our paramedics and rescue teams who attended and assisted the injured and trapped on the scene,” said Herbst.

Disappointing matric results?

KERUSHUN PILLAY THE Independent Examinations Board (IEB) results were released to the public today.

All examinations came to an end on November 28, and the Minister of Basic Education (DBE) Angie Motshekga will announce the overall performance on Wednesday.

But what are the options for those who have fallen short of what they were expecting?

RE-MARKING AND RE-CHECKING The DBE charges R112 and R27 for a re-mark and re-check, respectively. This can be applied for at the provincial or district Department of Education office. The closing date for this is January 22. A pupil can apply to view their scripts after a re-mark or re-check for R219.

This can only be applied for up to seven days after the release of the new results.

TAKE SUPPLEMENTARY EXAMS A pupil can apply to take a set of supplementary examinations which will be written between May and June. The closing date for this application is January 31.

Those wanting to improve their overall marks for all or some subjects can apply to take this year’s June examinations.

IF YOU DON’T QUALIFY TO WRITE THE JUNE EXAMS You can re-enrol to repeat the year, as long as you are younger than 21 years old.

You can also register as a parttime repeater at a Public Adult Education Centre or register for a Senior Certificate (SC) exam which is set for adult and out-of-school pupils.

Pupils can also apply to continue studies at a Further Education and Training (FET) College which offers vocational learning options.

The Independent Institute of Education stressed that performance in matric does not define a person’s life, and there are opportunities to recover.

The Institute’s Nola Payne advised pupils who did not achieve what they expected to enrol for a higher certificate qualification as a bridge to studying a degree.

WADUKUZA SAPS task team successfully recovered over 1700 live rounds of ammunition from a home in Kwamphithiza, in the Ntshwawini area recently.

The task team reacted swiftly after receiving a tip from a member of the Ntshawini community that the ‘Kwamphithiza home’ had live rounds of ammunition.

Members arrived at the Kwamphithiza home shortly after receiving the tip, the home was abandoned and the door left open.

Members searched the house and

found a firearm in one of the rooms.

Members continued their search and found various bags filled with live rounds of ammunition, as well as other items hidden in the bags.

Members recovered a 303 rifle, 103 unidentified capsules and a laptop. Also recovered at the scene were live rounds of ammunition: 143 x 9mm live rounds, 168 x shotgun live rounds, 11 x R1 live rounds and an additional 1251 live rounds of ammunition for various firearms.

KwaDukuza SAPS station commander, Brigadier SF Mhlongo com-

mended KwaDukuza SAPS task team on their excellent recovery of the 303 rifle and live rounds of ammunition.

“Well done to the KwaDukuza Task Team on their outstanding work in removing the firearm and various live rounds of ammunition off the streets of KwaDukuza during the festive season”, she said.

“We urge the community to play an active role in keeping each other safe by reporting all illegal activities and contacting Kwadukuza SAPS to report tip offs,” she added.

Mandeni boxing club enters new year with more punching power MUSA MNYANDU THE new year has started on a high note for the promising Mandeni Boxing Federation.

On Thursday January 2, Mandeni Mayor Thabani Mdlalose, accompanied by Council Speaker Lawrence Magwaza and exco member Zamile Mdletshe, visited the gym to donate boxing equipment, as part of council’s commitment to diversify

sports within the area of Mandeni.

The equipment included boxing gloves, punching bags, skipping ropes, gum shields and other protective boxing gear. The municipality said this donation was intended, in the main, to revitalize boxing as one of the major sporting codes in the area. Boxing as a sporting code has been fizzling out in iLembe District, following the closure of several boxing gyms in KwaDukuza.
