Road carnage — ‘Enough is enough’ JYOTHI LALDAS >>jyothi.laldas@media24.com
T
HE KwaDukuza Interfaith Committee hosted an urgent prayer following a spate of fatal road accidents on the N2 between Mandeni and KwaDukuza, particularly on the notorious Zinkwazi stretch. The event was held at the Blythedale flyover on Saturday afternoon with a host of religious leaders gathering to prayer for a reduction in road accidents. The prayer comes after 10 people died in two separate accidents on the N2 over the past two weeks. In one incident, two light motor vehicles collided on the N2 near Zinkwazi on January 26. According to IPSS Medical Rescue paramedics, the high impact collision left all of the occupants of both vehicles severely entrapped. Three occupants sustained fatal injuries whilst three more sustained critical injuries. On January 19, seven lives were claimed in a head-on collision between two light motor vehicles on the
N2 near the Tugela bridge. According to emergency services, bodies were strewn on both the north and south bound lanes. Citing these incidents as the driving cause behind the emergency prayer intervention, the KwaDukuza Interfaith Committee’s Ticko Ayer said, following the committee’s first prayer on January 20 to commemorate the lives of those who died in an accident on New Year’s Day, news of the N2 accidents took a heavy toll on the members. “Our committee was flooded with gruesome images on our chat groups of these accidents and we were left in disbelief. The N2 between Ballito and Zinkwazi is in the headlines with fatal accidents — ten lives lost in two separate accidents on two consecutive Saturdays between Mandeni and KwaDukuza. This is way too many, and the community at large are asking why this is happening in our area. “So, the KwaDukuza Interfaith Committee, after a successful prayer meeting on the R74, started in earnest a plan to seek divine interven-

tion for this stretch of road. We did not want another Saturday to pass without seeking mercy from God,” Ayer said. KwaDukuza Municipality Speaker Phumlile Zulu urged motorists to drive cautiously. “To the bereaved families who are here, your loss is our loss. Today we have come together, irrespective of religion, in prayer. We are putting up a united front to say enough is enough with road carnage. “We might pray in various ways but what binds us is belief. We believe that whatever we are asking, somebody will hear and answer our prayers.” The event concluded with various religious leaders rendering prayers.
