>>thamichn@gmail.com FTER a long wait, the Port Shepstone Maritime Museum was finally handed over to the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality on Tuesday, October 23 by the MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation Bongi Sithole-Moloi.

Sithole-Moloi unveiled the new museum on behalf of Premier Willies Mchunu.

The state-of-the-art museum, made possible by an investment of R19 160 538. 77, was handed over in a joint collaboration between the Premier’s office, the KZN MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation and the Ray Nkonyeni municipality.

The handover coincides with the birth month of Albertina Sisulu, whose milestones, along with those of Nelson Mandela, are to be showcased in one of the museum’s displays.

The museum is one of many projects which were announced by the MEC in 2016 that were to be completed within the Ugu District.

Addressing scores of people at a ceremony at the St Martin de Porres School sports grounds, MEC Sithole-Moloi said that while the day was dedicated to the opening of a newly-built museum, it was also important for South Africans to remember where they came from. Sithole-Moloi said it was undeniable that museums have been there for a very long time.

“However, not many of us knew what they were, let alone what was in them. This was because the museums founded during colonial times and under Apartheid were geared towards the preservation of European culture and were all built in areas where White people lived.

“It was not easy therefore for Africans to visit these institutions, which were built in areas where they were not wanted and which housed artefacts that had little or no reference to them and their experiences,” said Sithole-Moloi.

Taxi owner survives shooting

OMEGA NGEMA THE SA National Taxi Council (Santaco) in the Ugu region has confirmed reports that a Murchison taxi operator was shot recently.

The 49-year-old taxi operator was reportedly shot and wounded after the transport month event that was held at the Port Shepstone taxi rank. The incident occurred while he was driving from Port Shepstone to his home in Murchison at about 5.15 pm on Monday last week.

Santaco regional chairperson Mandla Mzelemu told the Fever that the council did not have any information to confirm who was responsible for the shooting. However, there has been a history of rival taxi wars in the area and, earlier this year, Santaco met with the Ray Nkonyeni Law enforcement, Department of Transport, and SAPS under the Ray Nkonyeni municipality to find out when illegal taxi ranks would be closed down.

Mzelemu said that the taxi industry hoped to provide possible solutions on how public transport could be made efficient, and asked the Ray Nkonyeni law enforcement agency to assist.

He added that issues of crime in the taxi industry needed to be dealt with.

Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said the victim sustained injuries to the side of his arm and the abdomen area.

Port Shepstone SAPS are investigating a case of attempted murder.

OCAL law enforcement has noted with concern a rise in reported cases of the theft of gate lights.

Security company owner Basil Lanka, from Lazer911, said they received more than 10 reports of stolen gate lights at residences around the Port Shepstone area.

“I think there is a syndicate going on and these people are definitely working with an electrician

somewhere because there has been a huge spate of the same crime in the area,” said Lanka.

IN OTHER NEWS - A housebreaking was reported at Ilala Palms in Umzumbe on Monday. There were no signs of forced entry as the window to the apartment was left open. A flat screen TV, laptops, a rechargeable torch, and some cables were stolen.

- Also on Monday, a domestic worker was allegedly attacked by two unknown men at a house in Al-

bersville. She said she ran into another resident’s yard for safety. The two men had allegedly emerged from a nearby bush.

- Siphosethu September will be appearing at the Port Shepstone Magistrate Court today on charges of drug possession. September was arrested at the Port Shepstone taxi rank after being found with 30 tablets of heroine.

He appeared in court on Tuesday and the matter was adjourned to Thursday so as to verify his given address.

Missing persons sought by police FEVER REPORTER LOCAL police are investigating at least three missing persons reports in areas including Hibberdene, Mthwalume, and Murchison.

Fikile Faith Mkhize (33), who was from Shlongwane, Ward 18 in Mthwalume, was allegedly on her way to Pretoria on Saturday, October 6 at about 12 pm. She had planned to take a taxi from Hibberdene to Durban and then board a bus to Pretoria. Attempts to contact her have also been unsuccessful and it is alleged that she did not reach her destination. It is not known what she was wearing at the time of her disappear-

ance. She has a tattoo of the map of Africa on her left shoulder as well as an old scar next to it.

Police are also still looking for Angelica Zingaphi Shazi (81) who was last seen by a relative on Tuesday, October 9 at 6 pm.

It is alleged that she was alone at home in Mathulini area in Hibberdene and, when the family returned from vaccinating their pets, she was nowhere to be found. She is short in stature and it is not known what she was wearing at the time of her disappearance.

The young man is accused of murdering Hlaka Sazi Ngubo (20) of Mthwalume. The roommates allegedly had an argument over cold water in their room at the residence on the KwaDlangezwa campus on Sunday, September 16. The quarrel led to the perpetrator stabbing Ngubo.

Following the incident, the accused was stoned by an angry mob of students and was transported to Ngwelezana Hospital where he was placed under police guard.

During the commotion, students also stoned a police car and damaged its windscreen.

Constable CK Mkhwanazi was injured during the incident and is still receiving treatment.

wo suspects aged between 42 and 46 briefly appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, October 18 facing charges of dealing in drugs.

The two were arrested on Wednesday, October 17 during a joint operation between the Hawks, Durban Organised Crime Investigation, Crime Intelligence and Durban Metro Police.

Hawks spokesperson Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo said police followed up on information about a heroine supplier based in the Scottburgh area and a joint operation was conducted.

Members swooped in at the premises where 12 000 heroine capsules as well as paraphernalia with a street value of approximately R750 000 were found.

The duo were subsequently placed under arrest and charged accordingly.

Also in attendance was Department of Agriculture MEC Themba Mthembu, who spoke about agriculture and farming from a business perspective. Mthembu said, at a local level, agriculture can be seen as a catalyst in growing the economy. He said it is also expected to play a key role in job creation, as mandated by the national development plan, and it has to feature prominently on the agenda of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

During his address, Pillay congratulated Ray Nkonyeni on the project and cautioned them to be careful of budget management issues and identifying po-

tential problems before they escalated.

He said communities have an enormous challenge of urbanisation, which saw multitudes of people flocking to urban areas like Ray Nkonyeni annually, and this problem needed to be accounted for and addressed.

“Ray Nkonyeni Municipality is the best performing municipality in the district. It is the tourism hub. You guys need to market yourselves because you have the opportunity to compete with the North Coast,” said Pillay, encouraging stakeholders to venture into industries like clothing manufacturing and the techno hub as well as to look into more commercial activities in townships.

A status report was also given on the Gamalakhe Rectification Programme in which 137 housing units have been completed. The programme is working towards the rectification of 273 housing units in Gamalakhe. There are 502 rental housing units in the former R293 area of Gamalakhe that are approximately 40 years old and, due to financial constraints, the municipality was asked to apply for the rectification of the units in two phases.Phase one of the rectifications is currently underway.

WAZULU Natal MEC of Human Settlements Ravi Pillay said he was pleased with the work of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, describing the municipality as “an island of performance amid a sea of disappointments” at the handover of the Gamalakhe In-Situ Upgrade Housing Project launch and the Gamalakhe Refurbishment Project handover in Gamalakhe on Thursday, October 18.

The Gamalakhe In-Situ Upgrade Housing Project falls under the KwaMavundla Traditional Authority, under Inkosi Mavundla, and is prioritised in the municipality IDP/Housing Section Plan so as to address the housing needs within the KwaMavundla Traditional Authorities.

According to the department, the project aids child-headed households, as well as South African adult females and pensioners who are rural dwellers.

The project had a total labour pool of 92 with an approved budget of R63 427 145, with R5 930 088.56 of this used in the 2018/19 financial year.

On Thursday last week, MEC Pillay handed over two houses to beneficiaries of this project, namely Mbali Mbiza (66) and Thandiwe Mzindle (85).

Mbiza, from Esgedleni in Gamalakhe, used to work as a gardener 10 years ago, has never been married, and lives with his three nieces and seven

grandchildren. The household, of which the youngest is two years old and the eldest is 32, survives on Mbiza’s pension as well as the child support grants for five of the children.

Thanda chess tournament empowers pupils OMEGA NGEMA >>omega.moagi@media24.com SCORES of enthused chess players from schools in Mthwalume and surrounds attended the Final Thanda Chess Tournament at the Roman Catholic Church Hall in Mthwalume on Saturday, October 20.

A total of 108 pupils from nine schools participated in the tournament, led by Thanda facilitator Nduduzo Muthwa. Muthwa said he started the classes in 2014 with only 28 pupils from two schools. At the time, he said, the pupils were also doing other sporting activities that he facilitated, until he decided to focus on chess alone in 2016.

“I am very passionate about chess.

I started playing in 1984. I was in

Grade 8 at the time and I used to compete provincially and nationally, and won numerous titles.

“I enjoyed chess for the way it elevated my brain capacity. I also found that I started doing better at my school subjects after playing chess. I started doing extremely well in subjects like mathematics and physical science,” said Muthwa.

He said this also helped his students as they produced better results in their studies, and helped pupils remain disciplined and focused.

One of the pupils, Sinethemba Cele, reiterated these sentiments.

“I love chess, and it also helps us in life to think before we act because in chess for every move you make you have to think about it very carefully,” said Sinethemba.

The chess programme is one of numerous ways in which Thanda helps pupils from the area to think and learn differently, and at a more advanced level than they would otherwise do without the programme.

Apart from attending to their immediate physical needs through the feeding scheme (which feeds 800 children daily), library, TV facilities, skateboarding and play area, Thanda works to emancipate underprivileged children in the Mthwalume area through innovative thinking and education.

“Through our core programmes: Early Childhood Development, Afterschool Programming and Organic Farming, we aim to fill that void and inspire good neighbours, good citizens, and the next generation of resilient, confident young adults who contribute to a better world,” said Thanda partnerships and marketing manager Shannon Vaughan.

Using music to battle drug abuse W

ITH drug abuse being a contentious issue facing the younger generation of the South Coast, it is time for young people to stand up for those who still battle with this social-ill.

With this in mind, St Cebisa Enterprise proudly presents and invites the public to the first-ever HipHop Est 98 Festival, which will be taking place on October 27 at the Gamalakhe Dark City Park, close to eRingini.

The festival not only brings together the most talented artists from the South Coast and beyond, but aims to create awareness about drug abuse and encourages the youth to say “NO to drug abuse”.

Artists you can expect to see include the legendary Shon Gee, Master Tee and Uzalo’s Jojo (Siphesihle Cele) also known as “Why Not?”.

Food stalls and clothing brands will be showcased on site, and the event organisers encourage the community to come out and support this wonderful initiative aimed at bringing together the community of Gamalakhe and bringing the old kasi rap back.

Gamalakhe creche gets a fresh new look THAMI KA-NKOSI >>thamichn@gmail.com THE African National Congress (ANC) in the Lower South Coast kicked off the Thuma Mina campaign in the region earlier this month as regional leadership, accompanied by Ray Nkonyeni sub-region and branch leaders as well as some volunteers, painted the Esigedleni Creche in Gamalakhe Ward 28 on Sunday, October 7. The leaders started with a clean-up campaign in the area.

The ANC says that the Thuma Mina (meaning “send me”) campaign is about reconnecting with South Africans through activities that improve people’s lives. The report says it hopes to solve the problems ordinary South Africans face.

THE Management of Esayidi Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college Enyenyezi Campus recently met with local community stakeholders from Boboyi and Murchison, together with Ray Nkonyeni business forum leadership, in preparation for 2019 student enrolment.

The key focus of the meeting was to market and communicate

all programmes that are offered at the Enyenyezi Campus as well as to make sure that all local youth are made aware of their options.

Acting Deputy Campus Manager Yugan Naidoo said members of the working committee as well as management will embark on an industry, business, and local high schools consultation, in order to see what necessary skills are needed and could possibly be taught in future, subject to space and funding.

“In this way, the campus management, together with central office, will try to align some setafunded programmes to assist our local youth,” said Naidoo.

He also called on all local stakeholders to join hands in helping the campus achieve its goal.

Boboyi community leader Mfanufikile Mqosini said the TVET colleges should address the issues of poverty, inequality and unemployment by providing practical skills to learners, not just theory.

GIVE a Child a Family (GCAF) held a “Going Green for Child Protection” campaign at various schools around Margate last week.

Going green for the campaign at their school on Friday, October 19, were pupils from the South Coast Academy.

Beyond the fun dress-up and poses, pupils also sat down for an informative service on child protection presented by representatives from GCAF, a childcare NPO based in Margate.

HOD for the Foundation phase Vicky Topham said the talk was very informative for the pupils.

“They (GCAF representatives) talked to the children about how everyone has the right to feel safe and how they should always have five people whom they trust to make them feel safe.

“They also gave every child and teacher a green ribbon and explained to the children how they can also help in child protection by not hurting each other, and helping each other to feel safe in and around school,” said Topham.

FTER competing in several pageants locally, and ultimately being crowned the Face of Port Shepstone 2018, Venus Hadebe of Margate says she is using modelling to inspire her peers to move beyond negative thinking and low self esteem. Venus is currently in the running to be Miss KZN Top Model 2018. The Fever spoke to Venus about her modelling career and future aspirations.

Q: WHERE ARE YOU ORIGINALLY FROM? A: I am originally from Ladysmith, KwaZuluNatal. I grew up there and later moved to Harding. I am now based in Margate.

Q: ARE YOU STUDYING OR WORKING AT THE MOMENT? A: I am currently a Grade 11 pupil at Margate Middle School.

I enjoy school very much and see myself studying to become a Chartered Accountant or studying medicine in the very near future.

I would like to think of myself as a semi-working person because of all that comes with modelling. I am a brand ambassador for a local brand called “Psycho”as well as an ambassador for the Phumlani Mzobe Foundation.

Q: WHEN DID YOU FIRST GET INTRODUCED TO MODELLING? A: I was first introduced to modelling earlier this year at school. It’s not something I thought I was capable of doing, but I really wanted to pursue it — little did I know that modelling is not only about appearance.

I entered the school pageant, and I did not do very well, but I fell deeply in love with the concept of modelling and wanted to work on it. So, I entered the Face Of Port Shepstone pageant and I won the title of The Face of Port Shepstone Junior Queen 2018. It has opened so many doors for me. Never did I expect to win, but anything is possible when you are doing something you love, and people take note of that.

Q: WHAT DO YOU ENJOY THE MOST ABOUT BEING A MODEL?

A: I get to meet new people. I’ve also discovered that the personality of a model cannot really be seen by just their appearance. It’s all in the way they talk and their actions.

I love that I’ve met so many models because they believe, through modelling, they can touch the lives of many. I love that, through modelling, I’m also able to inspire, help, and motivate many.

Q: HOW DID YOU BECOME A PART OF KZN TOP MODEL? A: I found out about KZN Top Model a month or two after Face of Port Shepstone.

I decided to enter because of the charity work that is done throughout the competition and all the youth upliftment programs the KZN Top Model team is busy with.

The journey has thus far been very challenging. I am currently working on raising funds for Ziphakamise, a South Coast charity, as well as selling tickets for the event on December 1.

Getting sponsors is not easy but I’m motivated and I know the outcome will be beautiful.

Modelling really does work on building up a person to be the best they can be. I feel myself growing as a young lady.

I’ve always wanted to do things for other people and finally I’ve been given the chance to put my dreams into action.

Q: WHAT WOULD IT MEAN FOR YOU TO WIN? A: I believe that when you do something you should not do it for yourself, but for those around you. I used to struggle with self-confidence, but once you overcome all the negative thoughts and start working towards what makes your heart happy, anything is possible.

Winning KZN Top Model would be like opening another door to greater things, not only for me but for my community, and that would mean the world to me.

With the title of Miss KZN Top Model Teen, I feel so much more could be done for the Ziphakamise charity fund and other charities.

I would also interact more and change the lives of people from around the South Coast and even further.

Put samp to boil in a deep pot.

Use boiling water to quicken the cooking time.

After half an hour, add in the sugar beans.

Add more boiling water if/as needed to the pot to cook the samp and beans till its soft and soupy.

You can add a chopped potato towards the end of cooking time.

Boil till soft Add Aromat/salt and some butter.

You can have it with plain tomato chutney

Add 2 cups of boiling water and slow cook till meat is tender.

Mix with the samp and boil for a while.

Serve with mayonnaise/mango/chilli pickle.

HE Ugu District Department of Education and the various municipalities under it recently presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Idwala Carbonates for having funded a Matric Intervention Programme that was run between 2014 and 2018.

The project was coordinated and facilitated by NPO Insikayolwazi Community Resource Centre whilst being monitored by the Department of Education, both at district and provincial level. It has seen many success stories in the past five years, the highlight being in the year 2017 when Sphamandla Zondi, from Sister Joan’s High School, obtained 100% in Physical Sciences and 97% in Mathematics in his final matric examination, placing the Ugu District and the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality in the spotlight nationally.

Idwala Carbonates, a mining company specialising in calcium carbonate in the Lower South Coast, has injected over R1.7 million into this project alone for the past five years.

Ronald Khuzwayo and Sthembiso Khanyile of the Department of Education at Ugu district level said the department appreciated the financial contribution that Idwala Carbonates has made towards the education of their learners. Khanyile added that the department constantly lost teachers to early retirements, resignations and death. He said the project was of partic-

In his presentation, he said Insikayolwazi was grateful for having been given the opportunity to make a difference in the education of young future leaders

of this country.

Nompendulo Mthembu, of Idwala Carbonates, thanked all the stakeholders who were involved in the project since its inception, including the school principals, DoE officials, community leaders like municipal officials, teachers, and Insikayolwazi for coordinating the project for them.

“This marks five years in the project and we are closing it for this term.

“We will now look into the report with the extended management, and if it is seen to be adding value, we will start it up again for another five years next year,” said Mthembu.

In recent months, The We Care You Care community project has mobilised the South Coast community with a common goal to raise R150 000 to buy a classroom for Zenzeleni Creche in Izingolweni.

Through the project, Shelly Centre joined forces with Breadline Africa, an NPO which builds container classrooms, libraries, kitchens and toilets for early child development centres. According to the centre’s marketing manager Kirstin Rowbotham, the project is taking place in three phrases including children, senior citizens as well as the rest of the community through a popup store stationed at Shelly Centre until the end of the month.

Local primary schools were invited to share their art lesson time with the project by painting fabric shopper bags with sea-

themed masterpieces of self-expression.

Senior members of the community then collected the children’s bags and have been busy decorating them with buttons, beads and other bits and bobs.

Schools involved in this project include Margate Primary, Hlanganani Primary , Izotsha Primary, Southcity Christian College, Merlewood Primary, Jai Hind Primary, Port Shepstone Junior Primary , St Martin de Porres Comprehensive, Cornerstone Learning Centre and Christopher Robin.

“We have been working on a community project for the past three months and Breadline Africa’s primary goal is to help children in under resourced communities do better in school by ensuring that they have safer spaces to learn in,” said Rowbotham. “You can purchase these community created masterpieces at Shelly Centre until Sunday October 28 at our We Care You Care Pop-up Shop. While stocks last,” said Rowbotham. The bags will be sold for a minimum donation of R100 and all proceeds will be collected to purchase a classroom for Zenzeleni Creche.

Shelly Beach beggar Dear Editor, The beggar at the mall in Shelly Beach bemoans me. He can be seen on a roller skate with legs folded underneath him.

The question arises as to whether he pretends to be an invalid or not. How can he hold that posture indefinitely?

His daily route seems to start in the parking area where he awaits his customers in order to sell “loose”

(one or more) cigarettes.

He is in a dangerous place in that he is inches above the road surface with a possibility of being run over. Afterwards, he rows himself into the mall to start his begging among the shoppers before making a stop outside the entrance to proceed begging.

It is a pitiable sight whether he is an invalid or not.

When a house-breaker fell through a loft, he sued the owner for injuries!

After an intruder was arrested in a house for breaking and entering, the house-breaker claimed he was taking short cut to reach another road.

When the driver of a dog unit vehicle was surrounded by an attacking mob, he ordered me to release his dog. The dog promptly bit and dispersed the rowdy crowd. During the court case of injury, lodged against the dog by the attackers, both the dog and I were required to testify in court!

Dear Editor, I read M. Kitshoff’s article in your October 11 edition, titled ‘The other side of Arbor Month’, and I know how the reader feels. I had a salon in Woolet street. Opposite the salon there used to be a row of majestic trees.

Freedom can be equated with safety, protection and the adherence to laws. Lately, our freedom of movement has been restricted. No safety is guaranteed.

Rapes are on the increase, attacks on teachers, destruction of universities, looting, increased road deaths, cash heists (and now even heists within the bank) and kidnapping (once a capital crime).

I recall performing police duty during early 90s — boring, driving around for hours and doing nothing. In one incident, unable to notify the Control Room of Protection Services of a taxi driver’s dangerous and reckless driving, I contacted the police.

Within 15 minutes, when I encountered the vehicle again, I parked my vehicle across his at a garage exit, preventing him from leaving. When I informed the taxi driver that I was contacting the police he grinned, from ear to ear, with amusement.

No police vehicle bothered to respond. Consequently, I sent an SMS, notifying Telkom that 039 682 5555, the Protection Service Control was not functioning. The reply? “Invalid number.”

A Telkom employee on Faults informed me that the number did not exist. A traffic officer explained that probably Protection Services had not paid their telephone account and had been disconnected. Also bankrupt?

Ramsgate owners are compelled to pay a monthly levy, imposed on their rates, to support the policing forum. A rates employee told me that every owner received a registered letter. No one in our building received such a “mystery” letter and

Blou Vlag-strande: Suidkus behou sy sewe, maar waar is Durban?

oos reeds bekend, het die Natalse Suidkus die Blou Vlag-status van sewe strande behou, en word die getal slegs deur Kaapstad oortref. Die strande is Marina, Trafalgar, Lucien, Southport, Umzumbe, Ramsgate en Hibberdene. Margate, wat vroeër ook hierdie status gehad het, het nog nie daarin geslaag om weer aan die standaarde te voldoen nie.

Hierdie standaarde is streng, en op die internasionale webwerf van die betrokke organisasie word die vereistes breedvoerig aangedui.

Van hulle is puik watergehalte, goeie bestuur, ‘n gedragskode vir mense wat die strande gebruik, voldoende en skoon toiletgeriewe, beskikbaarheid van noodhulp wanneer nodig, veiligheidsmaatreëls en streng beheer oor honde en ander huisdiere.

Daar is nog verskeie ander kriteria, en ‘n interessante bepaling is dat natuurlike opdrifsels en algae wat op die strande beland, nie verwyder moet word nie.

Wat die Suidkus se prestasie buitengewoon maak, is dat die standaarde dwarsdeur die jaar gehandhaaf word, terwyl die ander Suid-Afrikaanse strande dit net vir sekere periodes doen.

Suid-Afrika, die eerste land buite Europa wat hierdie status verwerf het, het met die jongste Wessatoekennings 66 Blou Vlag-strande, die meeste van hulle in die Kaap.

Een van die nuwe toevoegings is die Victoria en Albert-waterfront in Kaapstad as ‘n marina.

Op die oomblik is daar 24 strande in drie provinsies wat voorberei word vir Blou Vlag-status.

Hulle is besig met die nodige opgraderings en aanpassings, en sal oor twee jaar aansoek kan doen vir volle Blou Vlag-status. ‘n Totaal van 14-duisend mense sal by die nuwe strande betrokke wees, en hulle word op die oomblik opgelei. Daar is ook agt Blou Vlag-marinas in die land:

Sewe in Wes-Kaapland en een in Oos-Kaapland, naamlik Kaap St Francis.

Wes-Kaapland het die meeste Blou Vlag-strande in Suid-Afrika, naamlik 37.

Tweede is KwaZulu-Natal met nege en sewe wat daarvoor voorberei word.

Oos-Kaapland is tweede met sewe en agt wat hoop om die status te verwerf. Van I November af sal die Blou Vlag wapper op 3 783 strande en by 698 marinas wêreldwyd.

Die Blou Vlag-embleem het in 1987 ontstaan, meer as 40 lande neem daaraan deel, en die Wêreldtoerisme-organisasie sê dit is die bekendste eko-etiket ter wêreld. ‘n Vraag wat gereeld gevra word is: Wat het van die Durbanse strande geword?

Die antwoord hierop is ongelukkig dat hierdie stad, die eerste Suid-Afrikaanse stad wat Blou Vlag-standaarde toegepas het, tien jaar gelede besluit het om

hom aan die toekenningsproses te onttrek weens die toenemende riool-besoedling van sy seewater.

In 2013 is besluit om weer aan die program deel te neem, wat vrywillig is, en die Ethekwini-munisipaliteit kon vanjaar twee Blou Vlag-strande, en twee wat voorberei word, verwerf. Voor 2008 het die stad 10 Blou Vlag-strande gehad.

In 2015 het ‘n navorser van die Universiteit van Natal ‘n uitgebreide studie gedoen, en bevind dat die mikrobiogiese gehalte van die water by Durban so versleg het dat ‘dit onwaarskynlik is dat Durban in die onmiddellike toekoms ‘n Blou Vlag-kuslyn gaan hê’.

Die hoofrede hiervoor is die besoedelde rivier- en stormwater wat in die see beland, en die gevolg is van stedelike ontwikkeling, informele nedersettings en riool-suiweringwerke langs riviere.

Nietemin, die stad het vasgebyt en twee strande – uShaka en Westbrook – het Blou Vlag-status gekry.

Sewe strande in die munisipaliteite Ethekwini en KwaDukuza is in die proses om opgegradeer te word.

Hoewel daar hoop is dat Durban se destydse strandglorie herwin sal word, en provinsiale regeringsamptenare optimisties gereageer het met vanjaar se aankondigings, gaan dit ‘n opdraende stryd vir hierdie stad wees, wat ten spyte van die gebrek aan meer Blou Vlagstrande, steeds een van die land se gewildste vakansiebestemmings is.

Dis dus te betreur dat Suidkus- vakansiegangers in die onlangse verlede afgeskrik is deur die probleme van die Ugu-munisipaliteit met watervoorsiening en rioolbesoedeling, want dis ‘n besonderse prestasie om sewe Blou Vlag-strande te hê en ‘n groot toerisme-trekpleister.

Hoe gouer die kroonjuweel, Margate, op standaard gebring word, hoe beter. Wat klaarblyklik nie gou gaan gebeur nie, geoordeel aan die haglike posisie waarin Ugu hom bevind.

Dit laat Petrus vol bravade, met die hand op die bors verklaar: “Nie ek nie Here, so nooit as te nimmer sal ek u in die steek laat nie.” Hy het gereken dat niks hom van sy verbintenis aan Christus sal losruk nie. Dis natuurlik

Niemand wil sy of haar swakheid, of broosheid voor ander erken nie.

Petrus sou egter die bitter lewensles moet leer: Wie staan moet oppas dat hy nie val nie. Daar is talle mense wat gereken het dat ’n ligte flirtasie nie gevolge het nie en vandag uit gebroke huwelike moes stap.

Daar is baie sterk mense wat, front voorhou en reken dat hulle nie voor die versoeking van geld sal swig nie; todat die haan drie keer kraai. Vol bravade basuin hulle hul dwaasheid soos Petrus uit.

Wat sou die teenvoeter wees vir bravade? Nie om die heeltyd te dink aan hoe jy gaan misluk nie. Nee, Petrus

moes net erken het dat hy van Jesus se afhanklik was.

Die Lukas weergawe van hierdie teks vertel vir ons dat Jesus vir Petrus gebid het dat sy geloof nie ophou nie. Kom ons leer die les wat Petrus ten duurste moes leer na bittere verwyt: Jy is afhanklik van andere en van God veral, om staande te bly in die drukgang van die lewe.

Dit was uiteindelik Jesus se trou wat verhoed het dat Petrus se hele lewe nie verwoes is nie. Kom ons leer by Afrika: Ons is mens tussen mense.

Ons het mekaar nodig om te oorleef midde-in die druk om elke dag ’n bestaan te maak. Is jy nederig genoeg om jou afhanklikheid van andere en God te erken?

WW Soos ek verlede week aangedui het, was Oom Pottie twee weke lank by sy dogter in Ekhurleni, Germiston soos hy op die naam aandring, en het op sy eie met sy geliefde rooi 1984 Toyota drie-liter soontoe en terug gery.

Hy is nie meer jonk nie, vat-vat so aan die tagtig, en al wat hy makeer is te wyte aan so ‘n effense rugprobleem.

Daarbenewens kry hy so dan en wan gewrigsontsteking, maar andersins is hy blakend gesond vir ‘n man van sy ouderdom. Op pad soontoe moes hy ‘n pap wiel omruil, maar andersins het die Toyota, soos sy baas, ondanks baie jare ‘soos ‘n droom’ gery.

Die verskil tussen baas en motor is egter die motor se myl-afstand is laag, maar die baas s’n redelik hoog.

Wat Pottie se goeie gesondheid nog merkwaardiger maak.

Ewenwel, hy het een dag opsy gesit en sy gebruiklike draai by Ellispark ( hy weier om die lugdiens se naam te gebruik) waar hy weer die nodige toestemming gekry het om op die veld te gaan loop, leë pawiljoene en al.

Hy beweer ‘n uur op Ellispark, wat ‘n sitsessie op die pawiljoene insluit, laat hom terugbeweeg na die jare van Natie Rens, Mannetjies Gericke en Wilf Rosenberg.

OST families have some — distant cousins, stepchildren or, in the motoring world, offspring born of joint ventures. Toyota’s Aygo city car is built by one of these, a company called Toyota Peugeot Citroën Automobile Czech (TPCA). Located at Kolin (population 31 000), a town in the Czech Republic, it employs 3 200 local people. They build essentially just one product and it’s labelled Toyota Aygo, Peugeot 108 or Citroën C1. Minor details vary.

SA specs offers just one engine. Toyota’s 1KR-FE, 998 cc, three-cylinder develops 53 kW and 93 Nm since a 2015 upgrade to Euro6 emissions standards. It’s paired with a fivespeed manual transmission. Overseas buyers can choose a 1 200cc Peugeot motor should they prefer a bit more power.

Our test car was an X-Play Silver unit and, if we were buying one for ourselves, we would

fit a set of aftermarket, 14-inch alloy wheels.

This would overcome the hassles of lost, stolen or scratched caps, look smarter and maintain the reassurance offered by a spare wheel. Apart from the airbags, it also includes ABS brakes with Brake Assist, vehicle stability control, hill start assistance, ISOFix anchors with top tethers, childproof locks, rear fog lamps and central locking.

While researching this car we noticed that although it’s priced very close to Toyota’s own Etios, that India-built car outsells this one by a factor of about 11. Superior rear legroom and a bigger boot explain a lot, but this one has charm of its own. We noted Aygo’s added safety features (at least two more airbags, hill start and VSC) and its internal simplicity and decided that it would make a brilliant student car. New drivers like its manoeuvrability (9,6-metre turning circle and light steering), easy to reach gearshift lever, seven-inch touchscreen music system that pairs and shares easily, and simple instrument layout. All that you need is contained in a single, circular dial that moves up and down with the steering column.

The rev counter, that beginners usually ignore, occupies a minor arc next to the big and bold speedometer that in turn features outside temperature, mileage and fuel gauge within a secondary “button” in its centre.

Fuel, you said? When it comes to sipping the expensive stuff, Aygo’s little one-litre three-cylinder beats the Etios’ 1.5 four-pot hands down — about 5,1 litres per 100 km versus the big-seller’s 7,2. It’s also a buzz to drive, with the five-speed manual shifter working brilliantly.

Although rear seat legroom doesn’t cater for huge rugby players, your 5’4” student and

three of her buddies will be delighted. But as an experiment, we loaded the car up with three large male journalists who found that, for journeys up to about sixty kilometres, copilot and rear passenger could co-exist peacefully.

Aygo may not be the budget, mass favourite that Etios is, but within its design brief it’s perfectly sized, fun to drive, economical to run and just a little Bohemian. That’s what makes it special.

Kartik — an offering of love Kartik Maas (also known as Damodar) is the most auspicious month in the Vedic calendar and is observed by Hare Krishna devotees. This year Kartik takes place from October 24 to November 23.

In the month of Kartik, devotees bathe early in the morning and commence with prayers to maintain a high level of spirituality. Fasting is also practiced.

“The most important fact of Kartik is that we should increase our devotional service,” said Rajen Mahabeer of the Hibiscus Food for Life organisation. He said devotees believe that this month is particularly dear to Lord Shri Krishna and followers should try to perform as many good deeds

as possible.

Many devotees of Lord Krishna give up something they like for a month. By performing this sacrifice, one shows sincere devotion to please the Lord.

Offering of clay lamps is also practiced and it is seen as auspicious to feed as many people as you can during this month. The Hibiscus Food for Life organisation will be distributing food to the public every Friday for the month of Kartik next to the Hibberdene Spar. A total of 400 people will be catered for. Local karateka need help to represent SA OMEGA NGEMA >>omega.moagi@media24.com FOUR revered local karateka have been selected to represent South Africa at the IKO Matsushima Kyokushin Karate World Cup in China next month and are in need of sponsorship to help them get there.

The four karate champions of note are Sifiso Nhlumayo, Nonkululeko Bhengu, Thabiso Sigwebela, and Mpendulo Jili, who qualified for the international rounds after impressing judges at the provincial and national championships recently. Sifiso was also named the SA Champion in the sport for the second time and Thabiso was placed first in his category of U10kg. Mpendulo and Nonkululeko also ranked high in their respective categories.

Their instructor, head of the IKO Matsushima Lower South Coast region, Sensei Dr Sipho Nzimande will be accompanying them on the trip along with Shihan Mvaxa Mncedisi, who coordinates the fighters from all provinces.

Nzimande has been championing and grooming young karateka since the 1970s and is a former principal at the Esayidi TVET College where he further used the sport to instil discipline, leadership, self-esteem, and sportsmanship.

Mncedisi said this year the SA team will be looking to convince the IKO Matsushima Kyokushin Karate World Cup team to bring the next world cup to South Africa.

“We have previously hosted the world cup in SA, but this year we don’t just want it to come to SA, we want it to be held here at the Wild Coast Sun. We believe we are more than capable of hosting the event,” said Mncedisi.

In order to reach the World Cup in China next month, the enthusiastic students need to pay for visas, flights, accommodation and other expenses amounting to about R23 000 for each person.

They are appealing to businesses and community members for donations.

HE Wild Coast Sun Country Club hosted the Alfred Nzo Golf Development Tournament on Saturday, October 20 in a bid to unearth golfing talents from underprivileged areas of the Eastern Cape.

The tournament was organised by theMatatiele Golf Development and Mzamba Golf Development in association with the Wild Coast Sun Country Club and the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture.

It is part of the resort’s commitment to uplifting the community through education and

youth empowerment.

“We are hoping to produce a top class golfer from the small region. It is no secret that, aside from the fact that golf is a challenging sport, it is also very expensive, which means that to many in underprivileged areas the sport is nothing but a dream. I am very proud that we have made that dream a reality to the kids here. They all enjoyed themselves and some have come back with good scores,” said Mawande Genu, PR and Promotions Coordinator for Wild Coast Sun. The tournament is part of a long-term plan to nurture young pupils and encourage them to take up the sport as a profession.

According to club member Deon Chetty, Ugu Athletics has been hosting a series of similar community upliftment events with the KwaMadlala event being the third for the season.

“We host the fun runs to encourage people from rural communities to participate in athletics. We try to bring these events, which hardly ever reach them, closer so that they can also reap the benefits,” said Chetty.

Scores of community members showed up for the run at Denver Primary School and all were excited about future events with the club.

HE Gamalakhe Youth Development League games went well this past weekend after a short break during school holidays.

On Saturday, October 20 at Cendell Sports Field, most teams played a tough game, ending up with tightly knit results.

Team Sunshine seemed to be unstoppable as they reached their fifth game unbeaten, landing atop of the log standings, with Glamourboys coming in second.

In the final results, Glamourboys won 2-1 against Unique Aces, Sunshine beat Hot Spurs 3-1, Citizen and Giant Killers drew one all, All Stars won 2-0 against Young Achievers, Supersport won 4-1

against Tiger Boys, and the game between Wireless and Tigers finished off 1-0 to Wireless.
