South Coast beaches that retained their blue flag status this year include Marina, Trafalgar, Lucien, Southport, Umzumbe, Ramsgate, and Hibberdene.

Spokesperson for Ray Nkonyeni Municipality Simon April said this was a proud moment for the region.

“We are the only municipality who maintains this status for the whole year (365 days), unlike other municipalities who usually maintain it for a particular period.

“This Blue Flag Status is an international annual award which focuses on the environmental management of our coastline and coastal waters to help tourism growth and development,” said April.

He said that although it is a voluntary eco-label, it has become an in-

ternational symbol of quality for beaches, boats and marinas that meet a standard of excellence in the areas of safety, amenities, cleanliness, environmental information, and environmental management.

“We are very proud that we have managed to maintain this status as a way of contributing towards promotion of tourism as we are aware that it contributes a lot towards local economy,” said April.

Speaking at the event, National Department of Tourism Director of Programme Planning & Implementation Patience Molokoza said, “Through programmes like the Tourism Blue Flag Beach Stewards that is implemented by WESSA, we can address the issue of South Africa’s youth unemployment. This programme is meant to capacitate the

youth and provide skills training and development. Programmes like these would not be possible if it were not for partnerships with municipalities,” said Molokoza.

Vincent Shacks, General Manager of the Ecotourism unit, noted that the municipalities, marinas, and boat operators who have achieved the prestigious Blue Flag award are our sustainable tourism champions and all South Africans should be proud of these achievements.

“Blue Flag is a voluntary eco-label, so all of the effort and funding that is put into improving these sites is done in the interest of those using them. We are especially inspired by those sites where municipalities, the business sector and local residents are all working together to maintain this standard of excellence,” he said.

Ugu’s way forward?

ollowing last week’s announcements that Ugu Municipality is bankrupt, different suggestions have surfaced as to the way forward.

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) says the only way to resolve the current chaos in the problem-stricken Ugu Municipality is to have fresh elections so that the people can vote for a government that will work for everyone.

Ugu IFP Chairperson Sifundo Ngwane said: “It is high time now for this council to be dissolved. There is a long history of instability in this municipality.”

On the other hand, the Democratic Alliance (DA) has again written to the MEC of Cooperative Governance & Traditional Affairs Nomusa-Dube Ncube, calling for the Ugu District Municipality to be placed under administration and the appointment of a capa-

ble administrator. The DA has been calling for this course of action for over two years. The DA also accused MEC Dube-Ncube of playing petty politics in refusing to hear the voices of Ugu residents while the situation has worsened.

A member of the Provincial Parliament, Dr Rishigen Viranna, issued a statement saying: “The DA call is further strengthened by the ongoing financial crisis within the Ugu District Municipality.

“The municipality is facing a R10 million monthly shortfall in its budget; Ugu has a monthly income of R28 million yet monthly expenses are R38 million. In addition, there is a shortfall in funding for capital infrastructure projects and municipal debtors’ book approaching R500 million.

This is also coupled with a massively dysfunctional billing system. Thus even those residents who are willing to pay their bills cannot, due to lack of mu-

nicipal bills,” said Viranna.

Municipality manager DD Naidoo said at the media briefing on Tuesday, October 9, that placing the municipality under administration will not save it from the crisis.

He said the municipality has resolved to implement a turnaround strategy aimed at resuscitating the municipality from its current cash flow crisis.

Naidoo said some customers had genuine disputes, but had paid their water bills while the disputed part was being sorted out. Some are just refusing to pay for their own reasons, and others simply couldn’t pay because of their dire financial situation.

He said that for those who have dire financial situations, their circumstances would be taken into account. However, the water supply of those individuals, businesses, and government departments who should, but don’t pay, is going to be terminated.

He also appealed to people who had queries to contact the municipality to get clarity on what their situation was, and to continue paying the average amount until the matter has been sorted out. Naidoo said this was not the time to blame each other but it’s time to work together to save the municipality from crisis.

Part of the turn-around strategy would include a monitoring of Ugu vehicles after hours to prevent staff from using them for social purposes.

South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) Chair Mthandeni Ngcobo said that whatever strategies the municipality has should not affect the employees and the public. He said the municipal manager as an accounting officer should have picked up this crisis before.

“We will meet as the employees and we’ll collectively take a decision on what will be the way forward in this issue,” added Ngcobo.

Three arrested for armed robbery in Louisiana THE UGU OCC and SAPS K9 members arrested three suspects for armed robbery immediately after the incident occurred at Louisiana on Tuesday.

Three men, aged 30, 22, and 21, were taken into custody after they robbed a tuckshop owner at gunpoint.The victim did not sustain any injuries. Two airguns were recovered by members. Further investigations will be done to determine if they were involved in other crimes.

In March 2017, a concerned mother noticed that her 11- year-old daughter was afraid of her stepfather and, on questioning her, the child revealed that she had been raped by him on at least three occasions. The suspect, a 35-year- old general worker at a school in Braemer, Port Edward, was arrested and appeared in the Port Shepstone Regional Magistrates Court. He was convicted on October 11 to life imprisonment.

In a separate incident, on August 6, 2017, at about 3am in the morning, a 16year-old young woman was asleep at a residence at Mlozane Ward in Ezinqoleni when she heard 25-year-old Sthembiso

When she opened the door, he withdrew a knife and dragged her away. He threatened anyone who attempted to follow that he would stab his victim. On the way, he raped the teenager in the bushes several times. After attempting to flee, he stabbed her in the chest and twice in her back. Neighbours came to her rescue as they walked past other homesteads and contacted her family.

The Port Shepstone FCS Unit began investigating the case and made an arrest as the suspect was known to her and the local residents.

Nkonyeni was convicted on July 4 in

the Regional Court in Ezinqoleni to 14 years’ imprisonment for rape and four years’ imprisonment on charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. The sentences are to run concurrently. The accused’s name will also be entered in the National Register for sexual offenders and he has also been declared unfit to possess a firearm.

The investigating officer in both these cases was Sgt Sbonelo Ntini. The Ugu Cluster Commander, Major General Nxamagele, thanked and commended the investigating officer for his sterling efforts in investigating the cases and securing the convictions. — Supplied.

Crime round up — break ins and robberies

Help requested to locate missing people HIBBERDENE detectives are appealing to members of the community for assistance with regards to cases of missing persons they are investigating.

Angelica Shazi (81), from Mathulini area in Hibberdene, was last seen on October 9. It is alleged that she was alone at home but, when family members returned from vaccinating their pets, she was nowhere to be found. It is unknown what she was wearing at the time of her disappearance.

In another incident, Nokwanda Msani from Hibberdene, was last seen on October 5. It is alleged that she was hitchhiking to Durban with other friends but she never returned home. She was last seen wearing a black hooded top and black jeans.

Anyone with information regarding their whereabouts is requested to contact Detective Warrant Officer Sifiso Ngubane at 039 699 9839 or 073 603 1155 or Crime Stop at 08600 10111.

On Monday this week, an attempted robbery was experienced at Ziphakamise Welfare Organisation, however the alarm was activated.

The suspect, who had cut the barbed wire at the back of the offices, fled the scene as soon as guards arrived.

A similar incident occurred at the St Katherine’s church on the same day where the alarm was activated when robbers broke into the premises through the front door and broke a door handle.

Oribi Plaza robbers apprehended KADWA'S

HREE men aged between 28 and 40 appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday facing robbery charges.

They were arrested on Monday after they allegedly robbed a victim of an undisclosed amount of cash at Oribi Plaza.

According to police, the victim was at Oribi Plaza to deposit cash in the bank. As she was about to enter the bank, she was approached by two men who allegedly sprayed her with unknown substance and took cash, a bank register, and a cheque of R1 000 before fleeing the scene in a VW Polo.

According to police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala, local police were immediately alerted and started to search for the getaway vehicle, which was spotted not far from the area. The police arrested one suspect who was inside the vehicle. Two suspects managed to flee the scene on foot but were also later arrested by the police officers.

The stolen cash as well as bank register and cheque were recovered from the suspects.

Taxi council takes Transport Month seriously THAMI KA-NKOSI >>thamichn@gmail.com The taxi industry started a new initiative this week focused on taking healthcare services to taxi commuters and drivers. The campaign was held at the Port Shepstone taxi rank on Monday, October 15, as a Transport Month initiative.

The drive, led by the SA National Taxi Council (Santaco) in partnership with the Transport Education Authority and the Department of Health, encourages the testing and screening of taxi drivers and their commuters. According to Santaco, the campaign is an outreach to different taxi ranks around the province of KwaZulu-Natal. Ukhozi FM traffic presenter Ayanda Msweli made a special appearance.

Taxi drivers, rank marshals, operators and commuters received free HIV and lifestyle disease counselling at the event. Free counselling was available to everyone whose health was assessed, all test results will be kept confidential

and, where necessary or requested, mobile clinic staff will make referrals to local healthcare providers.

Santaco Regional Deputy Chairperson Mabhutana­ Sikhosana urged all road users to make road safety a priority.

“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility, whether you are a driver, passenger or pedestrian,” he said.

He said Santaco was determined to reduce the unacceptable high number of crashes and deaths on our roads by getting rid of the bad elements.

Sikhosana said Santaco wanted to get rid of those who continued to cause unnecessary pain to families and hurt the South African economy.

“The majority of people who are involved in these crashes are young people who are breadwinners in their families and who are still economically active,” he said.

He also thanked all the commuters for supporting the taxi industry in the region.

he South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) recently held a series of meetings on the proposed oil and gas exploration off the coasts of Richards Bay and Port Shepstone. The exploration is scheduled to go ahead in 2019 following the approval of a report by the Department of Mineral Resources. Members of the public have until October 25 to voice their concerns.

A meeting was held on Thursday, October 4 at Gate Ministries and a second meeting for public participation was held on October 10 in Umtentweni.

Environmental activist Desmond D’Sa, of the SDCEA, said the organisation is planning to have many public hearings as the drilling will have a negative impact on local marine life.

Addressing the meeting on October 4, he said: “I doubt whether the touted job creation would benefit locals. These operations normally bring in expertise from overseas.”

He said SDCEA will make sure the public is made aware of the dangers of exploration and harm it will cause to local fish.

One of the proposed deep-sea drilling sites is 62 km offshore of Richards Bay, the other is 65 km off Port Shepstone’s shoreline.

“The drilling of the first exploration well is planned for 2019,” said the report released by Eni South Africa BV. The drilling is expected to be about 62km from the shore, near Richards Bay and the area to be explored is 1 840km squared. The second area would be about 65km from the shore, near

Durban, the report said. The area to be explored is about 2 905km squared.

The report says South Africa has a crude oil demand of 600 000 barrels a day. If the exploration is successful, the benefits could include job creation, increased government revenues, and the reduced need to import hydrocarbons like crude oil.

Paddy Norman, branch Chairman for the Southern KZN branch of the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (Wessa), attends the meetings regularly and said renewable energy was the way to go.

“We ought to have factories in every province that are creating solar panels,” he said. He said the information sharing session on October 10 was well attended, however the public need to be more outspoken about environmental issues in order for positive change to come about.

In an article published in the Fever earlier this year, Dr Jennifer Olbers, Senior Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife marine ecologist, said more research was needed. She said the potential benefits of oil and gas were small compared to the negatives, which included greenhouse emissions.

“Greenpeace believes that harmful seismic studies and potential oil spills are reason enough to steer clear of oil drilling off the coast of South Africa,” Dr Olbers said. She suggests that the seismic testing could injure whales, dolphins and other marine life.

Angie Milroy, from Shelley Beach. is a stage one breast cancer survivor.

I

n support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we spoke to breast cancer survivor Angie Milroy, from the South Coast, in the hope that her story would enlighten readers and inspirethose who are currently fighting their own battle.

Milroy is a 46-year-old business woman.

Her fight story began three years ago when she was diagnosed with stage one breast cancer. We asked Milroy about her experience as a survivor.

Q: How did you find out that you had cancer?

A: It was September 28, 2015. I remember the day clearly. I would usually do self-exams in the shower and, one unexpected day, I felt something that did not feel right.

Nervously, I visited my doctor where I was tested. Soon after, I got the terrifying telephone call telling me that I was diagnosed with stage one breast cancer.

Q: What were your thoughts at the time?

A: Your whole world comes to a standstill and all I could think about was how I was going to face this challenge. You come to a point where you tell yourself “I have to do this”. My mother was diagnosed with cancer twice and I watched her fight; she inspired me. I stayed positive throughout the entire journey.

Q: What type of treatment did you undergo?

A: After visiting an Oncologist, some tissue from the mass that formed was sent to a lab overseas for testing. The reason for tissue testing is to tell you what form of cancer treatment is the better option for you. I had 16 courses of chemotherapy. During the first

few sessions, the patient usually gets very ill and that’s when I understood why the they call the first few treatments “The Red Devil”. Soon after that I made the courageous decision to have a bilateral mastectomy.

Q: Was the recovery a long process? And are there any drastic changes that you made to your life?

A: It took approximately four weeks to recover. You have to be patient and I cannot stress how important it is to take care of your mental health, especially in times like these. I haven’t made any changes in my life since my diagnosis. Keep a healthy lifestyle but never deprive yourself.

Q: How do you feel about Breast Cancer

Awareness month?

A: It’s ironic, around this time, three years ago, I went through the scary cancer battle.

Q: Do you have a message for our readers about cancer?

A: Mammograms and screenings for cancer are very important, also take some time to learn about how to feel for certain changes your body may go through. Having a support system such as friends and family who are always positive is also very important.

Being diagnosed with something like cancer is a real emotional roller coaster. You have to always have dreams, no matter how old you are and make those dreams your motivation. Never give up. Always have a fighting spirit and keep your faith strong.

THE CANSA Relay For Life is one of the events featured on CANSA’s fundraising calender. A 12-hour event, it will be hosted on October 27 and October 28 from 2 pm to 2 am at the Suid Natal Primary School.

What makes this event different from a normal fundraiser is that the Relay For Life event celebrates, remembers, and fights back. We invite every cancer survivor and caregiver on the South Coast to come and have a meal with us as we honour and pamper them and celebrate their journey.

The first lap is always opened by the survivors, who do a lap of honour, followed by the caregivers. There is also a tent decorated for the survivors.

The next aspect is remembering every cancer patient who has lost their battle. Luminaria bags are decorated with pictures of family and friends lost to cancer. These bags line the track and candles will be lit after dark. It is a very humbling experience to walk the track and remember lost ones.

Finally, we have the fight back aspect, which is our way of making a dif-

ference to fight the battle by educating and informing as many people as we can. Every year we pick a new way to fight back, for example people take pledges or participate in group activities that are educational but also fun.

For the main part of the event, teams of 10-15 people camp around the track and take turns to walk around the track in relay fashion. One person from each team has to be walking at any given time. These teams pay a registration fee, R500 for adult teams and R350 for school/youth teams, and have the option of fundraising further. We encourage school teams as well as it is a safe venue with no alcohol or smoking.

During the event we have entertainment lined up on the main stage, including various Relay for Life ceremonies, singing, dancing, zumba, team activities and a fun lap every hour on the hour.

VOX POPS THAMI-KA-NKOSI SA’s Labour Minister, Mildred Oliphant, delivered an address during the Jobs Summit held at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand recently. Held under the theme “United we can create jobs”, the Jobs Summit was announced

by President Cyril Ramaphosa in his 2018 State of the Nation Address.

The president highlighted that jobs, especially for the youth, will be at the centre of the 2019 national agenda. Statistics South Africa second quarter data showed that unemployment had increased to 27,2 percent. South Coasters voiced their opinions on whether the summit will have a positive impact on job creation.

OCAL non-profit organisation Thanda is up for a global Best Innovation for Development award. Co-founder Angela Larkan will be travelling to the Netherlands to pitch Thanda’s idea at the global award ceremony on October 11.

Thanda, based in Mtwalume, is one of 10 finalists competing for The Spindle’s Best Innovation for Development award, which recognises new solutions in development co-operation that contribute to a just, inclusive and sustainable world. The theme of this year’s festival is “A Future We Want”, and that is exactly where Thanda’s Lifelong Learning Library (3L) comes into play. The innovation will provide educators and youth workers with free access to an online platform featuring experiential, arts-based activities and easy-to-implement lesson plans accompanied by video tutorials.

3L will provide an abridged version of the organisation’s Creative Learning Curriculum, which is built around the development of three core practical skills (literacy, numeracy and empirical thinking) as well as five game-changing skills (self-esteem, perspective, creativity, critical thinking and empathy).

“We believe that these skills are vitally important for children to become resilient, lifelong learners who feel empowered to create a better world,” says Angela Larkan. “We’re already experiencing demand for this type of resource from other after-school programmes and nonprofit organisations around the country, but our long-term goal is to catalyse a learning revolution. We’re not just trying to narrow the educational achievement gap, we’re aiming to create a better way forward for our country and our world.”

The winner will be announced at the Partos Innovation Festival, in collaboration with The Spindle, on Thursday, October 11 in Amsterdam. If selected, Thanda will receive funds to take their idea to the next stage of development — enabling them to begin building out functionality for 3L, which will include video tutorials, online training, a discussion forum and downloadable activities. 3L will empower educators, parents and programme implementers to make learning come alive, wherever they are.

FEVER REPORTER SOUTH African Traditional Music (SATMA) award winner Vernon Govender shared the importance of knowing and understanding your culture at the Pink Couch Heritage celebration talk show on Friday, October 5, held at the Port Shepstone Museum. Legendary Gugu Goba and Cookie Busadeo also made it an epic night of intercultural teachings and information.

Talkshow hosts Tessa Green and Precious Gumede agreed that parents and educators should play an important role to ensure that the youth are taught to be proud of their heritage.

Goba said as a traditionalist it is her belief

that cultural practices bring about resolutions to many of the world’s social ills.

“Culture and tradition teaches one how to behave and if it is done from a young age, many youngsters would be more responsible. We would have fewer cases of teenage pregnancy, rape and so on,” she said.

Busadeo, a Hindu traditionalist, spoke about their cultural beliefs and dishes, and she also emphasised that feeding people is very important in her culture.

She prepared a variety of Indian dishes which were shared among the audience. Adding some spice to the show were also performances by Maskandi musical and dance group, and students taught by Govender.

Golfers raise money for Child Welfare C

hild Welfare SA Port Shepstone held their second Annual Charity Fundraising Golf Day at the beautiful Margate Country Club on Saturday, October 13. Even though the heavens had opened the night before, and rain was falling all around, the day cleared up after breakfast and 49 golfers took to the course for a splendid game under grey clouds but perfect golfing conditions. Closest to the pin was closely contested but four dominant winners were declared at prize giving, and Captain Carlos Pereira­did the honours of announcing all the winners for the day.

“We want to congratulate our overall winners of the day Brian Jolliffe and Anton Kohrmann, who took first place, as well as all the other winners and players who took part in the day,” said Samantha Podmore, fundraiser for Child Welfare SA Port Shepstone.

“We would also like to thank Margate Country Club and all our sponsors for their generosity in supplying such great prizes, as well as all the four balls at prize giving that extended the hand of generosity by raising an additional R1 500 for our charity,”she continued The raffle was very well supported at the event and Sandi Johnson was lucky number 17 on sheet nine, taking home the goodies hamper which included a signed mini cricket bat by all the 2018 KZN Dolphins.

The event, which was said to be “much-needed” for the community, was deemed a huge success.

The People’s Voice presented their plan for the family fun day to all the committee members of the Merlewood community, who included Ward Councillor in Ward 17 Ajit Rajaram; Merlewood Primary School Governing Body (SGB); the Sporting Committee; the Housing Committee; the Community Policing Forum; Beauty for Ashes NPO; as well as the hosts, the People’s Voice NPO, and it was well received.

Activities which took place on the day included athletic races, egg and spoon races, sack races, apple in the bucket races, and 11-a-side soccer tournaments.

Spokesperson Tessa Matlala said the event turned out to be the success and this was primarily due to community support.

“We would like to thank the leadership of Merlewood, the community, the children who came in numbers to participate in the games, as well as the parents,” said Matlala.

SCHOOL SCENE Exciting first week at Creston FEVER REPORTER THE first week of the final term was exciting for the pre-primary pupils at the Creston College as they got to start swimming again with first bits of summer finally.

The junior primary phase came back to a brand new storm water drain placed behind the classrooms to ensure that the rain will not flood the classrooms again, and the Grade 3s were graced with a new outdoor learning area with concrete tables and chairs under the trees, all thanks to Rob van der Merwe and his team.

The senior primary pupils came back from the holidays to another holiday, as it was time for school camp.

The Grade 5s went to Sweetdale from October 9 to 10 where they spent two days learning all about leadership and critical thinking skills. The pupils had a good time

learning to make rafts and are now even able to make a fire to cook food. They were taught the value of teamwork and were also evaluated on their leadership abilities.

The school wishes to thank the teachers who gave up their family time to be at the camp.

Finally, the college phase students were awarded for academics and sports at the annual Honours and Awards Assembly which took place took place last Thursday. In the matric class 11 pupils were awarded for academic commendation, seven received scrolls, eight were awarded half colours, four full colours, four honours and Sian Koekhoven was given honours with a tie for his performance during the academic year.

HE 2018-19 heads of school for Port Shepstone High were announced when the Executive Council of Leaders (ECL) held its inauguration at the end of term three.

The school now has four deputy heads. Congratulations to all those who have been appointed as leaders for next year.

Over the school holidays, the heads of school had the opportunity to attend a leadership camp sponsored by Rotary and held at Port Shepstone High School. This leadership course prepares them for their roles as leaders of the school.

finals, held at the National Research Foundation in Pretoria on October 2. Schools representing their provinces were given the question: “Can the investment of public resources in mega science projects such as the SKA prepare South Africa and Africa for the fourth industrial revolution and contribute to the eradication of poverty and substantial development in the country and continent?”

“Our team had to tackle this topic from a political perspective and fared well in the competition as they were placed third in South Africa. We are very proud of their achievement,” said the school’s PRO Karen Boland.

In other news, our cricket team travelled to Eshowe during the school holidays. On day one they beat Pioneer by seven wickets, Dun-

dee by 77 runs and Ladysmith by 39 runs on day two.

On day three the team beat Kloof in the finals by 72 runs.

Eleven of the school’s athletes competed in the third league of events in Durban. Best results were achieved by Nkosazana Mchunu, who came first in the U14 400m in a time of one minute and three seconds. This is a new school record.

“Well done, Nkosazana. Philelinkosi Shozi came first in the U15 800m and third in 1 500m race. Innocentia Ncama came third in the U15 800m.

“Congratulations to Luthando Shezi who has been selected to represent the Midlands team, which will be touring to Bloemfontein on October 20,” said Boland. — Supplied.

DA calls for change in Ugu The Democratic Alliance has again written to Hon Dube-Ncube, KZN MEC of Cooperative Governance & Traditional Affairs, calling for the Ugu District Municipality to be placed under Section 139 administration and the appointment of a capable administrator.

The Democratic Alliance has been calling for this course of action for over two years. Instead of taking proactive action, MEC DubeNcube has rather played petty politics in refusing to hear the voices of thousands of Ugu residents. All the while, the situation has worsened.

The DA call is further strengthened by the ongoing financial crisis within the Ugu District Municipality. The municipality is facing a R10 million monthly shortfall in its budget; Ugu has a monthly income of R28 million yet

monthly expenses are R38 million.

In addition, there is a shortfall in funding for capital infrastructure projects and municipal debtors’ book approaching R500 million.

This is also coupled with a massively dysfunctional billing system. Thus even those residents who are willing to pay their bills, cannot, due to lack of municipal bills.

All of this occurred under the watch of Mayor Chilliza.

The mayor with his entire ANC administration has shown himself incapable of turning the situation around. Even in the midst of this crisis, he has remained silent. Under their watch both the water provision and financial situation has worsened. Previous interventions by the provincial government has come to nothing.

Unlike other parties that have only now spoken about the crisis, the Democratic Alliance will continue to fight for all the residents of the Ugu District Municipality, both urban and rural.

The Democratic Alliance will ensure that all residents have the dignity of water and sanitation services.

Investigate the distribution of expired food Dear Editor, I must take my hat off to Mr Trevor Hatting and the police for the investigation into expired food sold at Spaza shops and supermarkets as a concerned citizen. I wondered why so many people

that this food is cooked and distributed to the locations and to senior citizens.

Their premises must be searched, including cooler-rooms where the expired food is stored.

What I don’t understand is that most food dis-

tribution centres are aided by government. They get government subsidies. What are they doing with the money?

It’s about time that a thorough investigation is done on the matter.

A former South African President compelled minority groups to absorb others so as to experience violent and serious crimes prevalent in rural areas.

Who were/are the perpetrators?

Our esteemed first man, the president, categorically denies the murder of white farmers since the New Dispensation of 1994, claiming that all cultures have been equally subjected to violent and serious crimes.

Deliberately circumventing the truth, he failed to identify the perpetrators of all these dastardly crimes.

A Google site, Fact, which published crime/murder statistics, has been “conveniently” removed — another ploy to withhold damning information by censoring the media. Not all information can be erased.

These horrific murders of forcing parents to witness their babies cast into boiling water, prior to their brutal torturous death, have not only been published, but imprinted on one’s memory.

No doubt Ramaphosa will remove an access site, providing information of his personal wealth, indicated in two amounts of more than $500 million and $700 million respectively. The New Dispensation severely condemned the lack of opportunities for non-whites during the Apartheid era.

Consequently, deprived of opportunities, how could Ramaphosa and numerous ANC members have amassed such incredible wealth within less than a quarter century?

During the Marikane uprising, Ramaphosa allegedly supported the police by denouncing the miners’ violence.

When the police minister was obliged to resign, Ramaphosa, employing a tactical move to “save his skin” and to protect his mining shares, sympathised with the rioting miners.

Instead of being rewarded, farmers are being disadvantaged for their work ethic and economic contribution.

The government is focusing on “stealing” farms from rightful owners, although sufficient tracts of vacant, arable government land could be provided to aspiring black farmers.

The Constitution guarantees the right of safety. Everyone who has suffered the loss of a family member (owing to the government’s lack of unwillingness and inability to control violent and serious crime) should demand compensation from the state.

For South Africa to gain recognition, confidence and to secure aid/finance from the powers, the president should undertake moral and ethical actions.

Re: The Issue of the legality of Umdoni’s 2018/19 Budget challenged or denied.

• Cogta and Treasury were then informed of the situation and Treasury called a meeting of the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Speaker, Municipal Manager and DA councillors on July 17, 2018.

The official from Treasury conceded at that meeting that 18 votes is insufficient to pass a budget and that the outcome would trigger an intervention. No further action was taken by Treasury, Cogta or the Mayor and MM. They were reminded again of the voting outcome of 18:6:2 in July and August, and that the voting outcome was insufficient to pass a budget.

• The DA caucus have been reporting this matter publicly since June. Due to the disregard shown by the MM and majority on council, for the law and for the service delivery needs of citizens, the Umdoni Action Group decided that the courts should be approached, and have appealed for public contributions to assist in doing so.

• It is only now that the MM, Mayor, ANC councillors and their proxies, having realised this intention to approach the court, that they have suddenly found it necessary to change their story.

The Mayor went on record at the meeting on September 26 to say that the voting outcome was 20 votes for, six against and two abstentions. There is no provision in law for him to unilaterally change the facts captured in the approved minutes, which contradict his statements yesterday.

The MM’s recommendation on the agenda falls far short of achieving the falsification he was seeking.

• DA Caucus Leader Edwin Baptie put it on record that the mayor and MM are attempting to falsify the evidence now that they have become aware of the serious consequences of the situation.

• The fact that seven councillors who signed the register were not present at the time of the budget vote is further proven by a vote taken after the budget vote that has the same outcome of 18:6:2.

It escaped their attention and was not even mentioned. This further demonstrates the Mayor’s obvious attempt to falsify the evidence. He is going to find it very difficult to juggle the names of who he must identify as participating in the votes when the records don’t correlate with his statement and he has never before challenged their accuracy.

Loss of a community leader Dear Editor, If one thing is inevitable, that is death. Yet when it does occur a sense of grief overcomes us. Last weekend the Muslim community woke up to the loss of one of their most beloved leaders, Hazrat Hajee Hafez Ayub Kadwa (DB). He was a man of multiple talents but a redeeming feature in his makeup was his deep-rooted love for the religion of Islam.

He was seen as controversial to a few but loved by the majority for the courage of his conviction in standing firm in his beliefs.

ous individual carried out the decree of his Creator and acted with aplomb. His departure will not only leave a singular void but will be felt by many who followed his path.

He was the epitome of goodness and grace. He leaves behind a family who, without a doubt, take heed of the legacy left behind by this trojan of a man. He died on Saturday, October 13 at the age of 73.

We pray in unison for Ayub to be granted the highest accolade in the gardens of eternity. Farewell my friend, you are now in a better place of appreciation.

Dear Editor, Councillor Roy Bhoola’s statements are lies. There was never any debate over the quorum of the meeting on September 26 or the attendance register. The debate, or more accurately, the chaotic hate-filled speeches of Councillor Bhoola and others, was over the voting outcome which the Mayor attempted to change unilaterally.

The speaker would not allow the DA to respond to the Mayor’s lies, for fear that the truth would be reasserted. Councillor Bhoola should explain why he never challenged the accuracy of the minutes before.

They capture his vote in favour of a budget he has attacked on numerous occasions after voting for it.

It is well understood that the AM4C and Al Jamaah councillors in Umdoni are proxies for the ANC. Perhaps it is his way of attempting to secure a position with them.

Rather than dealing with the lies in his claims, we respond by stating the facts he so obviously does not want the public to know.

• The Council took a vote on the 2018/19 budget on 30/05/2018. The voting outcome was 18 in favour, six against and two abstentions. Only 26 councillors were present at the time.

• The Constitution (section 160(3)) requires a majority of the council to vote in favour of a budget to approve it, i.e. at least 19 out of the 37 councillors.

• There were 33 councillors present at the start of the May meeting but seven left the meeting prior to the budget vote. It has happened in most council meetings that ANC councillors leave the meeting, usually without leave of the chair. They also fail to attend meetings and as a result many meetings have been inquorate. This ill-discipline has been a long-standing problem and is on record.

• The minutes for the May meeting confirming the voting outcome of 18 for, six against and two abstentions, were unanimously adopted on 29/06/2018 at the June meeting.

• The mayor and the MM were subsequently informed that the voting outcome was insufficient to pass a budget and they responded that 18 votes is a majority and so the budget was passed.

Neither the mayor or any of the ANC councillors and their proxies, questioned the voting outcome, and all supported the mayor’s view. The 18:6:2 voting outcome was referred to numerous times and was never

Wouter se Watergat WOUTER WILLEMSE Die Watergat is weer buite-seisoenstil, wat aan die een kant nogal lekker is, want ons kry kans om bietjie te rus. Van ons kombuis-personeel gaan nou nou oor ‘n tydperk van ses weke stukstuk op verlof sodat almal weer op en wakker is voor die Desember-seisoen aanbreek.

Slegte nuus vir ons sake-ondernemings hier aan die kus is dat die skoolvakansie vanjaar baie korter is as gewoonlik. Die verduideliking waarom verstaan ek nie mooi nie, maar ons hoop die gevolge gaan my bankbestuurder nie te veel ontstel nie. ‘n Ander faktor wat die Watergat deesdae meer in ag moet neem as vantevore, is dat die ander watergate prysgewys baie mededingend geword het, en ook die gehalte van hul disse verbeter het.

Dit plaas ekstra druk op vroulief en die kombuispersoneel, maar gelukkig het sy resepte wat oor die jare klante gelok het en nog steeds komplimente kry.

Haar beesstertbredie is die beste wat ek nog in my lewe geëet het, en Sondagmiddae is die 30 porsies binne ‘n halfuur uitverkoop. Die enigste probleem nou is die hoë vleispryse wat die winsgrens baie klein maak. Ons sal binnekort moet besluit op ‘n prysverhoging, of die dis van die Sondagpyskaart af verwyder.

Oom Pottie is ook met verlof en kuier by sy dogter in Germiston, ( hy weier om te praat van Ekurhuleni ).

Hy het laat weet die Toyota se een voorband het gebars onderweg soontoe, maar gelukkig het hy stadig gery. Hy kon dus gemaklik stilhou en die spaarwiel aansit. G’n wonder die band het die gees gegee nie.

Heel tereg was die mening dat Cyril Ramaphosa die enigste man is wat op die oomblik iets aan die saak kan doen, en dat hy almal se steun nodig het, nie noodwendig as ANC-politikus nie, om die saak reg te ruk.

As dit egter genoem word, maak nie saak wie op die oomblik in die Watergat is nie, kom die teen-argument onmiddellik van iemand dat hy sy uitsprake oor grond-onteiening moet temper, en word die kernvraag gevra: Waar was hy die afgelope paar jaar as Adjunk-president. Hoe kon hy so blind gewees het vir wat om hom aangaan? Is hy nie by implikasie aandadig aan die gemors nie?

Verraad VERRAAD is iets wat diep sny en sy merk op mense en ’n gemeenskap laat. As mense en medemense gedy ons op vertroue. Ons floreer in situasies en kontekste waar ons veilig voel. Wanneer ons vertroue geskend word deurdat mense ons in die steek laat, of ons geskok word deur iemand se optrede, los dit ons met letsels in ons gees en gemoed.

Maar ten spyte van hierdie ontkennings, word algemeen aanvaar dat sogenaamde muthi-moorde algemeen voorkom, blykbaar omdat daar talle ‘nie-amptelike’ tradisionele genesers of sangomas is wat hulle eie reëls het. Oor die afgelope jaar alleen was daar deur die land verskeie gevalle waar kinders verdwyn het en liggaamsdele by tradisionele genesers gevind is. Dit is op die oomblik baie moeilik om vas te stel presies hoeveel sg. mutimoorde gepleeg word, maar onlangse opnames toon dit kan tot 300 per jaar wees. Daar word gevrees dat baie van hierdie moorde nie aangemeld word nie. Die meeste van die moorde word in die landelike gebiede gepleeg, met aanduidings dat Limpopo die provinsie met die meeste sulke misdade is.

Sowat tien jaar gelede het ‘n senior lid van die Polisie se Ondersoekende Sielkunde-eenheid se navorsing getoon dat ‘n moordenaar gewoonlik deur ‘n tradisonele geneser genader word en dan ‘n ‘bestelling’ ontvang. Die moordenaar word haarfyn verduidelik hoe om die liggaamsdele te verwyder, en ingelig dat die dele verwyder moet word terwyl die slagoffer nog lewe,

want dan is die medisyne ‘sterker’. Hoe jonger die slagoffer hoe beter. Tradisionele genesers wat hierby betrokke is, werk nie almal van dieselfde ‘teksboek’ af nie. Hierdie metodes word in die uiterste geheimhouding mondelings van die een geslag na die ander oorgedra, en die proses verskil dikwels van geneser tot geneser en streek tot streek. Die verskillende liggaamsdele word om verskillende redes gebruik. ‘n Vrouebors is bv. ‘n bron van ‘moedergeluk’. Hierdie muthi sal glo klante vir jou besigheid verseker. Geslagsdele word vir viriliteit voorgeskryf.

Keelbloed is ‘n belangrike komponent en word opgevang wanneer die keel afgesny word.

Dit sal interessant wees om te sien wat uiteindelik bekend word wanneer die Margate-verdagte se saak in die hof beland. Skrikwekkende getuienis is juis oor die afgelope paar jaar in etlike soortgelyke hofsake in Suid-Afrika gelewer.

Daihatsu and Toyota come together to offer SA a ‘new’ compact SUV R

EMEMBER Daihatsu? The unassuming Japanese automaker and maker of the popular Sirion and Terios? Well despite officially leaving South Africa in 2015, the brand is still going strong globally, especially in its home market of Asia.

What does this have to do with Toyota SA? Well, the two Japanese automakers entered into an “emerging market agreement” and the first model from that partnership has arrived in South Africa — the new Toyota Rush.

Globally, the Rush is, in fact, the Daihatsu Terios “returned”, the previous generation of which was available locally in 2015. The new SUV will be sold globally.

The new Rush hopes to grab its share of the SUV market with its aggressive pricing, stylish design and practicality. In SA, however, the new Rush SUV, sourced from Indonesia, has more in common with its Avanza sibling, with which it shares a platform and its 1.5-litre petrol engine.

THE RANGE A single petrol engine variant is available and can be ordered in either manual or auto guise. And the price? The manual is priced at R299 900 while the four-speed auto model retails for R313 500.

ENGINE Power is provided by a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine with outputs of 77kW/136Nm. The engine can be mated to either a five-speed manual transmission or four-speed auto, driving power to the rear wheels.

Fuel consumption is rated at 6.6 litres/100km for the manual variant while the auto version has a claimed 6.7l/100km with CO2 figures of 156g/ km and 158 g/km respectively.

DRIVING IT The engine is sprightly, largely due to the transmission’s short ratios, which poses its own problems on the road; the manual gearbox is in dire need of a sixth gear, as you’ll soon hit peak rpms, doing little to promote fuel consumption and reducing engine noise.

The Rush is designed to handle the rigours of city life and feels rather nippy, with a composed ride and capable suspension. It’s surprisingly good off the beaten track too, capable of tackling gravel roads with its 220mm ride height but it is by no means an off-roader. There’s loads of feedback from its electric steering, making parking a breeze despite its dimensions.

Ride quality was fair, even when traversing the rutted sections of the Ado Elephant park near Port Elizabeth.

Overall, it’s a pleasant enough vehicle at moderate speeds and will see its occupants arrive at their destination in relative comfort.

INSIDE The design of the Rush borrows heavily from its Fortuner sibling, with its large horizontal grille slats, LED headlights and a body-colour spoiler.

Inside, it borrows elements from the Fortuner and current Avanza. The centre stack carries a six-speaker audio system compatible with Bluetooth, Android Auto Plus Show and Apple CarPlay, controlled via an 18cm infotainment touchscreen, auto aircon, a USB port and 12V socket.

It’s fitted with rear-parking sensors, a rear camera, SATNAV, hill hold, stability control and six airbags are standard. Compared to the larger Fortuner, the plastic bits are coloured in black (as opposed to beige) and the upholstery is black fabric.

The Rush is well packaged, offering loads of head- and legroom for all passengers and a family-pleasing huge cargo bay; boot space is rated at a stupendous 609-litres (in Indonesia it boasts a third-row of seats) and the SUV seats five.

A big gripe is a lack of a parcel shelf, essential in South Africa for keeping the contents of your boot hidden. The SUV also lacks privacy glass.

The fit and finish of the cabin is adequate for its price point, even with faux-stitching along the dashboard and door panels.

U13 Soccer thrills in Margate THE U13 soccer tournament sponsored by Build It was held on Sunday, October 14, at the Margate Sport School. It was the 12th year running and the quality of football played gets better and better every year.

This initiative came from Chantel and Hector MacLeod, the owners of Build It, 12 years ago. Today, it has grown into one of the biggest under 13 football tournaments of its kind in South Africa. Last year coaching legend Clive Barker, who fully supports this initiative, did a meet and greet at the Port Edward branch of Build It to inspire young footballers, followed by a coaching clinic at the Margate Sport School.

On Sunday, 25 under 13 football teams arrived at Margate Sport School from 6.30 am to register and warm up for this huge sporting event.

The first match kicked off at 9 am. At first whistle on two fields these teams battled it out for over five hours to be the ultimate champions of the under 13 Build It Football Tournament. After hours of exciting football, it finally came down to just Harding Development and The Young Chiefs to face off in the final. Up for grabs were new tog bags and full football kit sponsored by Build It for the winning team, as well as individual trophies and the bragging rights that goes with the champions trophy and being the under 13 champions for 2018.

At final whistle, it was Harding Development that won the tournament and walked away as champions for 2018.

The most valuable player (MVP) was 12-year-old Sibusiso Dlamini from Harding, who won a brand new bike, a special tog bag, and a trophy.

The words of Barker from last year was still ringing in the ears of the youth…

HE South Coast Bass Association chairman, Thys Hoffmann, recently organised for club members to visit a five star game lodge in Eston on a private game farm.

Members said the trip was a special as they received VIP treatment for the entire trip, which took place from September 28 to September 30.

“We were warned of extreme weather conditions but were willing to face off against nature and were not prepared to miss out on such a wonderful opportunity.

“The bonus was also that special permission had been obtained for us to fish some very private farm dams on Saturday and Sunday. Won-

derful views and great accommodation,” said spokesperson JJ Eales.

“Game fish were seen right in front of the lodge in spectacular fashion,” said Eales.

He said just about every lure put out was smashed and an obscene amount of bass was caught. The biggest fish was landed by Boet Stewart and weighed at 1.4kg. That evening the weather changed and, on Sunday morning, mother nature derailed the enthused members’ ambitions to fish for the entire weekend.

“Needless to say, we only lasted a few minutes after it became clear that the fish were not responding. We gave up and returned home.

Our sincere appreciation to our chairman for making this trip an unforgettable experience,” said Eales.

THERE was great excitement and fun as children from local primary schools took part in the KFC Mini Cricket Day, held at Port Shepstone Country Club last Saturday, October 13. Ben Malambi, former cricketer, said the KFC Mini Cricket Tournament is aimed at developing young cricketers.

“Provide the game of cricket in its simplest form to young children and at the same time make it enjoyable,” he said. Malambi added that it will also lay the foundation of a lifelong interest in cricket and give all children, irrespective of their ability, an opportunity. Malambi said the most important thing is to develop self-confidence and ball skills that will be useful in other sports.
