HE legendary story of Thaipoosam Kavady is remembered every year and will be commemorated this month from January 12 to January 26. The story of Thaipoosam Kavady revolves around the popular Tamil deity Lord Muruga and his battle to prove good over evil. Each year, devotees observe a fast, gather at temples for daily prayer and prepare their “kavadies” (a wooden structure carried on the shoulders of devotees) and chariots for the main day of Kavady when they parade in strict devotion. The Umbango Sri Siva Soobramoniar Alyam will be hosting its annual Kavady festival on January 12 at 2.30 pm. “We humbly invite you and your family to our annual Thaipoosam Kavady. Flag hoisting will begin on January 12 at 2.30 pm and daily obayams will start from 5 pm on

BirdLife Trogons to visit Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve ON Sunday at 6.30 am, BirdLife Trogons will visit Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve. An entrance fee of R30 per person is payable but negated if you have either a Rhino card or Wildcard. There is a R20 per person charge for non-members of BirdLife Trogons. Take chairs, a packed breakfast and meat to braai for lunch. Outings may be cancelled due to weather, check www.birdlife
