UNDREDS of polling stations across the South Coast opened their doors at 7 am yesterday, marking the start of the country’s sixth democratic elections. With a record of 48 political parties contesting the ballot, people in Ward 27 in Gamalakhe came out in their numbers to make their mark at the Esayidi TVET College, Gamalakhe Campus. According to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), a record number of voters registered to vote. However, the number of those who actually voted will be determined after the elections. Ward 27 Councillor Mdumseni Cele said his hopes for the outcome of the elections are obvious. “This is an African National Congress ward. The region is very
much depending on the votes of this branch. But I don’t doubt at all that the people’s party, which is the ANC, will come out victorious in these elections,” said Cele. Yvonne van der Merwe, who was at the TVET college to cast her vote, said that it is very important for her to be part of these elections. “The reason why I vote and will always vote is because I will be able to complain and express my dissatisfaction, should the party I voted for fail to deliver,” said Van der Merwe. Thabsile Hlophe, who also formed part of the queue, said she woke up early in the morning to be part of the general elections, not only because it is her right, but because she would like to see change in governance and in the country. As part of ensuring safe and secure elections, SAPS members from the Gamalakhe Police Station also came out in their numbers.
