DANGEROUS and growing phenomenon has hit South Coast roads as unsuspecting motorists are being sold old and worn-out tyres which have been regrooved and spray painted to create the illusion of being “new”.

Tyre “regroovers” use a special tool to deepen the existing grooves in an old tyre, then sell the tyres to unsuspecting motorists at a lower price.

The practice is nothing new and in some instances legal, with some truck tyres that have the label “regroovable” on them safely allowing for it.

The Department of Transport allows regrooving for a truck tyre with a bead diameter of 430mm

and more. Anything less is illegal.

However, some unscrupulous tyre dealerships use the same method for passenger vehicle tyres to cut corners, endangering the lives of motorists for a quick buck.

A local tyre dealer who spoke to the Fever on the condition of anonymity said although he did not practice the method in his business, he was aware of some local businesses in the informal tyre dealing sector who did.

“They get these old tyres for free and regroove them to deepen the lines, spray them over with black spray paint, and sell them for R300,” said the dealer.

Normally, new tyres cost anything from R520 to over R1 000 per tyre.

The tyre dealer said regrooved tyres are easy to spot as the tread

pattern is uneven or skew because the regrooving is done by hand.

Tyres are by far the most important element in a moving vehicle, as they are the only thing connecting the body of the car and the road, therefore if they are of poor quality, it places the people in the car in unimaginable danger.

In a bid to keep regrooved tyres off the roads, the traffic department has made it a fineable offence to drive with regrooved tyres.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality spokesperson Simon April confirmed this.

“Operating a vehicle with regrooved tyres is a transgression in terms of Regulation 212(j) of the National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996 where it stipulates that: ‘No person shall operate on a public road a motor vehicle which is

equipped with a regrooved tyre’.

“When conducting systematic vehicle checks, officers investigate if the vehicle is fitted with regrooved tyres and issue notices to offenders when spotted,” said April.

He said the danger associated with the use of such tyres is great and may result in a tyre burst that could lead to an accident and ultimately to damage of property, serious injuries, and even loss of life.

The Department of Transport has encouraged those with information on dealerships or individuals selling regrooved tyres to report them to the SAPS or to the local traffic authority for investigation.

Port Shepstone SAPS spokesperson Petros Mpinge said the local police had not received any complaints of this sort to date.

Robbers accused of impersonating cops OMEGA NGEMA

TWO men are in police custody for allegedly robbing a Margate resident and impersonating police officers towards the end of last year.

The two accused from Mthwalume , identified by the court as Mr Mashaba and Siyabonga Nxumalo, appeared at the Port Shepstone Magistrate court for a bail application after being arrested in St Michaels on December 23, 2018.

A Manaba resident reported that they had robbed him of R10 000 in cash at gunpoint while impersonating police officers.

The court heard that a witness had testified to conspiring with three men from Mthwalume to rob the Manaba resident as she had information that he was in possession of R10 000 to secure a deposit for a car.

On the day of the incident, the witness said she boarded a taxi to meet with the complainant in Manaba with her co-conspirators on her tail in a separate vehicle.

Upon meeting the complainant, Mashaba and Nxumalo allegedly showed him a police badge and requested to search him, saying they had received information that he was a drug dealer. When they did not find any drugs on him it is alleged they asked him to take them to his home, which they searched and where they found the R10 000. They then fled with the cash in a minibus taxi.

The two were intercepted by police in St Michaels and allegedly attempted to escape before they were apprehended with the cash and fake police badge in their possession.

Mashaba and Nxumalo denied the state’s claims, saying they had loaned the complainant R10 000 in March 2018, which he never returned. They said on December 23 they went to his house to collect the money, which they say he voluntarily handed over to them, and accompanied them to board a taxi back to Mthwalume.

The bail application was remanded to February 8.

N UMZUMBE resident told the Fever that his neighbourhood has been without power since the thunderstorm on Sunday, February 3.

The man, who lives with his 70year-old wife in Folly Field, which is in between Hibberdene and Phumula, said he decided to contact the paper out of desperation, having had no luck with Eskom.

He said after the heavy rain and thunder on Sunday evening, the whole valley was plunged into darkness.

The man’s wife has to use an oxygen machine for her heart condition, and he says the local government hospital does not have the resources to accommodate her.

Luckily, his landlord, who lives next door, has a power generator which he was able to use now and then for his wife’s oxygen supply.

Mother accuses nursery school of negligence OMEGA NGEMA >>omega.moagi@media24.com THE mother of a two-year-old girl from Margate is accusing her daughter’s former nursery school of negligence after the toddler came home with bite marks on her back.

The mother said she noticed the marks while bathing her daughter and assumed it must have been from the last time she had gone to school. The next day the mother enquired about the bite marks, but she was allegedly met with hostility.

“When I asked the owner of the school about the bite marks she said she did not know what had happened and I responded that it would be impossible not to notice the bite marks since they were huge, showing that the child must have bled from them and most definitely cried,” said the mother.

She says an altercation then ensued between her and the school owner as she put it to the owner that, in concealing the incident, she risked her daughter’s health as the child may have contracted a disease or infection from the bite.

She also alleged that the school owner was racist as she believed that if had it been a white child, the incident would have been treated with more urgency.

“I was not even worried about the altercation or whatever may have led to the bite mark because I know children will be children and the ordeal had passed. I just wanted to know who the child was so that they could also get health checks to avoid infections,” said the mother.

She said a security company was contacted and she and her daughter were chased out of the school.

The next day the mother went back to the school and was turned

away. “I told her (the owner) that she had no right to chase us away as I had paid for the full month,” said the mother, who added that while the security company was there to escort her, she heard the owner of the school retelling the story to another parent and actually naming the child who had bitten her daughter as another five-year-old from the school.

When asked for comment, the owner of the school said there was no evidence that the child was bitten on the school premises as the mother only reported the incident three days after it had allegedly happened. She also said that she honestly had not noticed anything because at no point had the child cried to indicate that she had been hurt.

The owner of the school said she also did not take kindly to being called racist, as there was no evidence to prove that.

“If she knew me at all or even taken a look at my Facebook page she would know that is not true. For starters, I spend R15 000 of my money every year donating school bags to black children in Margate. If I was racist, I would not be doing that,” said the owner.

She said she believed the mother was trying to defame her and her school because she refused to take her child back. “She even got the police and the child’s doctor to phone me but everyone just laughed at the situation because she is making a big deal out of nothing,” said the owner “The mother of the child who is suspected to be responsible for the bite marks apologised to her but she would not hear anything of it,” said the owner, who added that she offered the mother her refund for the remaining days for the month but she has not yet collected it.

The man’s landlord contacted Eskom to enquire about the power outage but was initially given no explanation and no indication of when the electricity would be back on.

“No one even came out here to inspect what had gone wrong,” he said.

After another inquiry on Tuesday afternoon, they were told by Eskom that the matter was thought to have been resolved. Eskom then

promised to escalate the issue.

The entity requires complainants to have their account number, meter number or reference number on hand when lodging a complaint. The municipality has also urged residents on several occasions to report their issues to the relevant channels, but unfortunately, in cases like this, many are still given the run-around when they do so and are forced to endure lapsed service delivery.

Bisset Street bushes endanger lives OMEGA NGEMA >>omega.moagi@media24.com OVERGROWN hedges and bushes closing off a pavement on Bisset Street in Port Shepstone have become a growing concern for business owners in the area, who say it not only affects their businesses but also endangers the lives of pedestrians as they are forced to walk on the road.

The bush is situated next to SARS on Bisset Street, where the Department of Labour also happens to be. The implications of this is that on certain days of the month the street is highly congested with people queuing outside the Department and while motorists battle for limited parking space, so do pedestrians, and they dangerously

manoeuvre their way in between the traffic.

A business owner in the area said he has tried several times to get the municipality to attend to the bush however his efforts have been futile. “This is not only about the aesthetics of the area, as the bush is quite an eyesore, but people’s lives are in danger,” he said, pointing to a minibus taxi which was forced to park beyond their parking space due to limited space.

Pedestrians could also be seen walking in the middle of the street for the same reason.

When asked for comment, Ray Nkoneyni Municipality spokesperson Simon April said: “The said complaint has been referred to the responsible Head of Department for his intervention”.

Umdoni takes on new project KADWA'S

OLLOWING the successful Umdoni Festive Season Plan, which provided some reasonable stability on the provision of services during the Festive Season period, Umdoni Municipality has taken the initiative of embarking on Project Khaedu.

Project Khaedu is a government initiative which is designed to prepare managers for site visits at the coalface of service delivery.

“Khaedu” means “challenge” in Tshivenda, and Project Khaedu has been designed as an action-learning programme to empower managers, through various processes of learning reinforcement and practice, to bring about change within their own area of operational control.

The main purpose was to ensure improvements in service delivery, targeting key areas.

The management teams led by the municipal manager Dr Vuyi Tsako, identified road maintenance, street naming, street sweeping and cleaning of ablution blocks (Umzinto) and customer care as key areas of focus for this project.

This has led to the adoption of the Umdoni Service Delivery Improvement Plan (SDIP), which is in line with Batho Pele Programme and White Paper on Transforming Public Service Delivery. Progress will be monitored on a monthly

SPCA urgently needs animal food donations

Train of Hope puts health on track NTANDOYENKOSI DLAMINI >>cherronntando@gmail.com If you are in need of a pair of tested glasses or have a toothache, rest easy because one of Transnet’s two Phelophepa Health Trains has just pulled into the South Coast.

The “Train of Hope” is stationed at the Port Shepstone station, behind Oribi Shopping Centre. It has been in operation since Friday last week and will be there until Friday, February 15.

The train offers basic healthcare by a qualified staff of 22 healthcare professionals, including nurses, healthcare educators, opticians and dentists. The trains also carry managers, translators, and security staff.

Eye tests are free and all glasses can be bought for R30 — this does not include operations or bifocals. At the dental clinic, extractions, fillings and cleanings are R10 for two procedures and R15 for three. Psychology services, pap smears, breast and prostate screenings are also free of charge.

N Tuesday afternoon, SPCA Lower South Coast inspectors spotted a transport truck full of mules that were being transported in “absolutely horrendous” conditions.

According to the SPCA, one of the animals had already been trampled to death inside the truck. They immediately impounded the animals and brought the truck to the SPCA in Uvongo.

The animals were offloaded carefully, checked by the SPCA vet for injuries, and given food and water. Unfortunately, one of the mules was so badly injured it had to be euthanised to end its suffering.

In total, the SPCA is now caring for 38 mules and 22 sheep and desperately needs assistance to feed them.

“We need bales of hay, horse and sheep feed, supplement blocks and any other related fodder. Please, we are asking for our community to come together and help these animals that have been treated so badly,” the organisation said in a statement.

RAY Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) has recently received two awards, placing it among the Top 10 municipalities as rated by the Department of Corporate Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta).

USINESSMAN from Oslo Beach, Tino Ossai, recently opened a new showroom of his furniture-manufacturing business Augossai Furniture Designs in Marburg, and for him the business is all about his passion for upskilling underprivileged youth.

Ossai, who has been living on the South Coast from more than 13 years, started his business doing shoe repairs utilising his qualification as a leather technician specialist.

The Nigerian-born businessman said he got his staunch business ethic from growing up around other entrepreneurial leaders in Nigeria.

Ossai’s Christian background, however, would not allow him to prosper alone, as he encountered underprivileged youth on the streets on a daily basis.

When his business began to take off, he started training programmes for the poor, teaching his students skills to design and manufacture leather products free of charge.

At the end of the training programme, Ossai absorbs some of his students into his business while

many walk away with a skill they can turn into a business or use to seek employment.

“It broke my heart to watch young people on the streets begging

for food, when they could be using their hands to fend for themselves,” said Ossai.

“I have also worked with NGOs in Botswana and Swaziland where we have assisted women who could not provide for their families before, but now have successful businesses from the skills we taught them.”

Augossai Furniture Designs, which has now been operational for two-and-a-half years, currently employs 10 people.

“I don’t open up elaborate recruitment and application processes for the training that I provide but I am always open to welcome people who need help and are willing to learn and work hard,” said Ossai.

Present at the opening on Monday was RNM mayor Nomusa Mqwebu.

Mqwebu encouraged the community to support local businesses because that can grow the local economy and assist in curbing unemployment.

“When big shops like this are opened, we are sure of employment [opportunities]. People are unemployed and support for businesses like this will lessen unemployment and grow the economy,” said Mqwebu.

Building our youth for the future through compassion VILLAGE Youth, a branch of the Hope Village NPO, had the pleasure of visiting Reinhardt’s Place in Phumula last Sunday. This is a facility that caters to the needs of 21 permanent residents with multiple disabilities.

Some of our members pampered the ladies and caregivers while some members braved the rain and started up a vegetable garden.

Hope Village Youth would like to thank all those who assisted with donations towards this initiative as well as the group members and family who assisted in the actual activity.

If you are between the ages of 13 and 34, enthusiastic, driven, proactive and have a burning desire to help your community, we are looking for you.

Hope Village Youth is a fairly new branch of the original non-profit organisation Hope Village, based here on the South Coast.

We are a group of young, fun individuals whose aim is to help the community by bringing awareness on issues affecting the youth.

The purpose of the group is to have a youth-driven movement who initiate and partake in projects in the community as well as act as a platform for youth to join our wonderful support structure of helpful, likeminded people.

SHEPPIE Comedy Night comes to the Port Shepstone Country Club this Saturday, February 9 at 8 pm. Port Shepstone will enjoy a night of unmissable hilarity when Durban comedy star Masood Boomgaard and friends hit the KZN South Coast for the first-ever Sheppie Comedy Night.

The stand-up comedy show will feature Boomgaard alongside fellow KZN comedy favourites Mo Vawda, Nabeel Peer, Monde Blose and East Coast Radio funny man Rory Petzer.

Boomgaard is an accomplished stand-up comedian, writer and comedy actor who frequently appears on theatre and comedy stages across the country, often alongside some of the biggest acts in the entertainment industry. He is known locally and abroad for his unique comic insight. A versatile performer, Boomgaards’ material is diverse and often thought provoking.

“I used to dabble in comedy during my varsity years, entered a competition a few years later and then one thing led to the next. I was always a bit of a clown in school and couldn’t keep my mouth shut. I was always cracking jokes. Taking that to the stage was a natural progression. It was hard at first but with time I found my feet,” he said.

He has reached millions of viewers through his online vidoes and toured Australia, the UAE and the UK where he performed on the West End on two separate occasions with the hit shows “African Indian” and “Indians from Africa”.

He has also appeared on the Comedy Central channel on numerous occasions and is also an actor on the E.tv series Imbewu.

His latest material focuses on everyday annoyances, the economy, dating and general human stupidity.

In this show, he is aptly supported by the likes of Mo Vawda, considered one of the best of the new generation of Durban comedians. Vawda burst onto the comedy scene a couple of years ago with his stand-out performances, clean-cut material and spot-on accents.

EVEN pupils from St. Martin de Porres School were part of the KwaZulu-Natal team that took part in the SA School Championships recently.

Thandeka Phakathi, who took part in the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG), came third in the competition and received a bronze medal. Amahle Ngidi participated in Gymnastics Aerobics and scooped first position in both individual and pair categories and received two gold medals. Angela Makhenke also took part in Gymnastics Areobics and received silver for taking the second position in the individual category and gold in the pair category. Both Amahle and Angela performed very well as a pair in the aerobics pair category. Khanyokazi Jokweni, who took part in the table tennis, received a bronze medal for taking the third position in the team events and gold medal for single. Bulelwa Radebe, Aphelele Dlisani and Mbalenhle Dayi took part in girls’ soccer and they achieved second position in KZN and were awarded silver medals. The pupils were accompanied by their coaches Siphelele Gumede for gymnastics and Purity Buthelezi for table tennis. The coaches thanked the principal Mr Davey, the SGB and parents for their support and for giving the children the opportunity to participate in these games.

‘Drugs don’t discriminate’ — high school pupils warned

YOUTH speaker Steve Hamilton visited Port Shepstone High School to chat to pupils about his life experiences.

Hamilton has been working in South African schools, colleges and companies for over 20 years, and more recently in countries such as Namibia, Botswana and Swaziland fighting a steadily growing drug pandemic.

During the course of his work he has received numerous awards from various service organisations, one of which was an International Citizen of the Year award

by Lions International.

He is also regularly asked to make appearances on television, radio and media publications for his views on the topic of drugs, alcohol abuse and Aids. He has published a book titled I Want My Life Back, now in its 9th print run in SA, and

was published in the USA in all 52 states in March 2004.

He has lectured psychiatrists, psychologists and other medical professionals, and has assisted many companies in dealing with the above-mentioned topics.

“Drugs don’t discriminate. They ask no name, title, ethnic group, faith belief or gender. They infiltrate every strata of society and respect no country’s boundaries.

They obey no commandment but their own law of greed, death and destruction,” he said.

“They have many names, forms, faces and colours. Society is facing a relentless attack on our youth, our future leaders are targeted by a ruthless and destructive master of disguise and death. Drug addiction generates crime and destroys our communities,” concluded Hamilton.

DISTRICT DECREASES PIPED WATER ACCESS BACKLOG Ugu District Municipality has, over the years, taken remarkable strides towards extending water services to previously disadvantaged communities, increasing the district’s water access to 87%. To date, the municipality has significantly eradicated the access to piped water backlog from 67% in 1996 to 13%. There are recorded district figures of 175 146 main sources of drinking water, which translates to 37 119 households piped, 21 777 sources of water inside the yard, 66 412 piped water on community stands, 926 yard boreholes and 27 844 communal taps among other main sources of drinking water.

So, there I was driving in the midst of the after-school rush, gritting my teeth at the lack of courtesy from other drivers. Then something totally unexpected happened.

A very kind taxi driver paused to give me way. That seemingly small gesture made such an impact, it left me reassured that there are good people in the world, and more importantly, there are polite taxi drivers out there!

Last week, Hope Village, a local NPO, did their bit to share some of those good vibes with others during their outreach programme that got the youth involved. It was a wonderful initiative, and I would love to see more uplifting stories like that given publicity in the media.

German Shepherds save the day Dear Editor The introduction of your “animal” column reminded me of the loyalty and unconditional love provided by animals.

In a past incident, control had radioed the sharp shooters to respond to a home where family members had fled from the father, who had menaced them and threatened to shoot them. He was seated near the front door in his garden, brandishing two fire-arms. Numerous curious police units flocked to the crime scene.

When my partner and I arrived, I peered through the garden gate slats, immediately recognising the two barking dogs. A few weeks prior to this incident, I had encountered the owner walking his two German Shepherds and befriended all three.

My partner alerted the owner, “My crew recognises your dogs.” The dogs ceased barking, standing next to the gate. “Let her climb on the wall so I can see her,”

JOHAN PRETORIUS Die kantoor van die Ouditeur-generaal was hier plaaslik in die kollig met sy oudit-bevindings oor die twee plaaslike munisipaliteite se begrotings vir die jaar 2017/2018.

Die Ugu-distrikmunisipaliteit het met skok daarvan kennis geneem die OG het beslis sy geldsake vir die betrokke boekjaar het veel te wense oorgelaat, en hom ‘n ongunstige of ‘adverse’-ouditverslag gegee. Ugu het ‘n afwysende mening of ‘disclaimer’, die sterkste moontlike kritiek, net-net vrygespring. Wat dit vir die munisipaliteit soveel erger maak, is dat Ugu skaars drie jaar gelede ‘n ‘ongekwalifiseerde mening met bevindings’ gekry en ‘n ‘skoon oudit’, waarna almal streef, netnet gemis het. Daarna het die munsipaliteit se geldsake stelselmatig agteruitgegaan, en met minder as vyf maande oor van die huidige boekjaar, is dit onwaarskynlik dat hy ‘n afwysende mening en ingryping van buite gaan vryspring.

Die Ray Nkonyeni-munisipaliteit, daarenteen, het baie beter gevaar, hoewel hy nie sy vorige twee ‘skoon’ oudits na mekaar met nog een kon opvolg nie. Die RNM het vir 2017/2018 ‘n ‘finansieël-ongekwalifiseerde mening met bevindings’ ontvang, nog steeds ‘n baie goeie verslag. Die vyf ouditverslag-kategorieë is die volgende: 1. ‘n Ongekwalifiseerde opinie met geen bevindings nie, oftewel ‘n ‘skoon’ oudit. 2. Ongekwalifiseerde finansiële opinie met bevindings, soos die RNM vanjaar gekry het.

3. ‘n Gekwalifiseerde opinie, omdat die betrokke munisipaliteit wanvoorstellings in sy finansiële state gehad het wat nie reggestel kon word voor die publikasie van die state nie. 4. ‘n Ongunstige ouditverslag, soos Ugu se lot, omdat daar benewens wanvoorstellings, ook soveel materiële foute in die state was dat die OG verskil het van die oorgrote meerderheid van die bedrae en inligting in die state. 5. ‘n ‘Afwysende’ mening, soos reeds genoem bekend as ‘n ‘disclaimer’, die ergste moontlike bevinding. Dit beteken dat die finansiële state totaal onbetroubaar is, en dat die OG geen mening kon vorm of uitspreek oor die geloofwaardigheid daarvan nie.

Toe die uwe in die raadsale gesit het met die verteenwoordigers van die OG se kantoor wat die menings kom motiveer het, was dit weereens duidelik dat hierdie kantoor uiters professionele mense in diens het. Hul gesaghebbendheid en kundigheid is ‘n plesier om te beleef. Ook die gehalte van die gedrukte bevindings is iets besonders. Voeg daarby die optrede van die Ouditeurgeneraal self. Wanneer Kimi Makwetu in die parlement of elders oor sy kantoor se bevindings praat, kan ‘n mens nie anders nie as om te besef dat hulle ‘n standaard handhaaf waarna ander staats-instellings kan streef.

Diskriminasie Diskriminasie is ’n woord met goeie en slegte betekenis.

Mens kan in die goeie sin van die woord diskrimineer as jy ’n onderskeid tref tussen wat van waarde is en wat nie van waarde is nie. Die aard van menswees is dat ons van nature uitfiltreer wat vir ons waardevol is en wat verwerplik is. Helaas is ons maar redelik subjektief in ons oordeel.

Hoe sal ons gemeenskap hier aan die Suidkus en ons land nie lyk as ons ’n slag onthou dat Jesus steeds deernis ook aan hulle wat Hom gekruisig het bly betoon het nie? Mag ons met daardie deernis met mekaar omgaan, anders gaan dit hel wees in ons land.

What’s on diary LITTER COLLECTION The litter at The Sand Spit is out of control and is a ugly eyesore in what should be a beautiful riverside spot for us all to visit and enjoy. As such, Umtentweni Conservancy will be organising a litter collection on Saturday, February 9 from 8am.

Indoor hockey club enjoys exciting second week OMEGA NGEMA >>omega.moagi@media24.com THE Port Shepstone Hockey club enjoyed another fantastic showing for indoor hockey with a total turnout of 26 people last Wednesday.

Chairperson Dels Patterson said about 17 seven-minute games were played and a lot of new faces were seen. “Lovely to see some faces we haven’t seen in a while coming to stretch their legs. As always, a thank you to Sheppie High for allowing us the hire of NRC. Much appreciated. Looking forward to the next week of hockey,” said Patterson.

Monday, a game which was reportedly also action packed and exciting for players on both sides.

“A good game was played by both sides. The young legs took the lead first and then age and experience kicked in. Thankfully the rain held back. The Sheppy ladies beat the Sheppy girls 3-2. Well done to all — we look forward to another fabulous season of hockey.

“Just putting it out there for the other schools — if you need a warm-up game for your first team, you know where to find us. Most of the schools play again at our ladies’ team as a warm-up game for the season. It also assists the coaches with their team selection,” said Patterson.

Players gear up for ninth annual hockey challenge T

HE dates for the ninth SPAR KZN School Girls’ Hockey Challenge have been announced with the ten regionals set to take place all around KZN. The year gets underway a week later than previous years with the usual Northern KZN regional nestling in midway on the 2019 calendar.

A bumper March has four tournaments taking place back-to-back over two weekends. Kicking off the year is the Pietermaritzburg Regionals on Sunday, March 3, hosted by one-time winners St John’s DSG and The Wykeham Collegiate.

The tournament then makes its

way to the South Coast where, on Sunday, April 7, Amanzimtoti will see the teams for the Durban South Regional at Three Schools Trust. Heading further south, the challenge moves down to Port Shepstone for the Sisonke and Ugu Southern KZN Regional tournament on Saturday, April 13 at host school Creston College.

The final four tournaments all take place in May as the action moves inland to Newcastle’s St Dominic’s for the Northern KZN Regional on Saturday, May 4, remaining inland for the Umvoti, uThukela and Umzinyathi Regional on Saturday, May 11, with defending champs Greytown High

Preparation underway for regional Karate Elite Trials THE Wkf Ugu Karate region Elite team 2019, who have achieved Wkf Ugu Karate Elite colours, had a very successful kata and kumite training session leading up to the Karate KZN Elite Trials to be held in Tongaat on February 17.

This is a Karate South Africa event

School playing host. Unfolding the next day, the Highway Regional will take place at Thomas More College.

Wrapping up the regionals, Grantleigh will host the Northern KZN Coastal Regional on Sunday, May 19.

Once all the winners are revealed at the ten regionals, the ten regional representatives converge at St Mary’s DSG two months later for the Grand Finals. The riveting Grand Finals gets underway on July 20 and July 21 where the ninth victorious team will be crowned.

The race, organised by Pinetown District Athletics Club, spanned a route of 25km, starting from Hillcrest and finishing at Pinetown’s Lahee Park.

Jean Max is the Tennis Clubs’ new secretary. Isabeau le Roux is still Treasurer and Julia Christiansen is still in charge of youth development at the tennis club.
