Highbury boys run for rhinos H

IGHBURY Preparatory School is immensely proud of the team of grade seven boys who completed the 10th Annual Maputuland Challenge recently.

This team of talented runners ran between 35 and 45 kms each on gruelling sandy roads in the heat and raised an amazing total of over R86 000 for Highbury’s two adopted rhinos, Tai and Baleka.

On October 21, a cheque was handed over to Dr Roelie Kloppers, the Executive Director of Wildlands Conservation Trust from Highbury Preparatory School.

Highbury is incredibly grateful to Mr Paddy Collins, the retired teacher who still organises the event, and all the support of the boys’ parents and sponsors. The boys themselves certainly rose to the challenge and discovered that with determination and grit, they could achieve more than they ever believed they could.

Renee Matthews has served the SAPS for 13 years.

GETTING a part time job at one of the biggest retail stores in South Africa was a pivotal moment in the life of Thabiso Wiseman Ndlovu, showing him that fashion was his true passion and encouraging him to start his own clothing brand.

Ndlovu; who is now a fashion designer, event host, and promoter; said that he realised his love for fashion at a young age but he could only pursue his passion after he had finished school.

“I’ve always loved style and fashion, ever since I was a child. After I finished matric back in 2013, at Kwadinabakubo Secondary School, I got a part time job at a leading fashion retail store which added a lot of love for fashion, style, beauty and styling people,” Ndlovu said.

The 23 year old revealed that one of the main challenges he faced was that there weren’t any subjects in school that involved fashion and he had to endure until he finished high school to pursue his dream.

After he finished high school, Ndlovu said that he had an idea to start his own clothing brand but he was unable to due to financial reasons.

“As much as I always wanted to start my brand, I had a low self-esteem. Deep down inside me I had that part of me that had a negative side. But my friends and family supported the idea,”he said.

In 2016, thanks to the courage he got from his friends and family, Ndlovu started his own clothing brand, which he called “Wisenation”.

“I named the clothing brand ‘Wisenation’ because I believe that our Nation (South Africa) is a Wisenation. In Mzansi we have High IQs, masterminds in different departments.

“The brand name is aimed at bringing birth into people’s mind, hope and belief that we are wise and we can make things happen,” explained the fashion designer.

In conclusion, his message to the youth out there is that dreams do come true — he is an example of that.

“You have to invest your time into it.

Unity and loyalty is key, everything is possible. Life is a journey. Believe and work hard every day,” he said.

CHIEVING her dream to become a police officer and to make a difference didn’t come easy for sergeant Renee Matthews, who is now retiring after 13 years of service.

Matthews revealed that, when she was young, she wanted to be a policewoman however, thanks to some misguided decisions, the path to her dream job was tougher than most.

“So many people were whining about crime yet did not stand-up and make a difference. That is when I told myself that I need to make a difference” she explained.

“Since I was young I wanted to be a police officer. I dropped out of school, thinking that I was clever, and then I went to apply to be in the police force but I couldn’t get through because I didn’t have matric,” she said.

Matthews was forced to go back to school but, due to her pride, she couldn’t bring herself to tell her parents about the situation, which resulted in her getting a job to pay for her studies herself.

“I battled with all sorts of different jobs through the years until I eventually saved up enough to pay for my matric, the correspondent course, my board and lodging for the year, and my exams,” said the sergeant.

Matthews’ chosen subjects included Law of Criminal Procedure and Evidence, Statutory Law, South African Criminal Law and Introduction to Criminology and after completing her studies, as soon as she got her results, she went back to the police to apply and she was called back for training. Six months after that she was stationed in the South Coast.

After three years of working in the South Coast she asked for a transfer, because her wife lived in Hillcrest,

saying: “I came here in 2008 and I’ve never moved since.”

In talking about her journey since then, Matthews revealed that one of the challenges that police face is that they are not recognised for their good work, rather they are all categorised as “useless” in the community.

“The community don’t name and shame but they put you all the same group, even though they don’t know what we deal with each and every day,” she said.

“There are a lot of people who try to make a difference as much I did, they really go out of their way to help the community,” she added.

Through it all, Matthews said she’s really going to miss the police force as she’s spent 13 years of her life there.

To conclude, she encouraged people to stop being negative towards the police and to rather be positive as: “Positivity feeds positivity.”

NPO honours hardworking local gogos at graduation ceremony PHINDILE SHOZI >>Phindile.Shozi@media24.com HILLCREST Aids Centre Trust (Hact) honoured its gogos at their Graduation Ceremony held on Friday, October 26 at Michael Gwala Hall, Inchanga.

Hact is a multifaceted, non-profit organisation that serves people impacted by HIV by providing unconditional love and hope in a practical, sustainable way.

At the ceremony, Hact honoured the gogos who have uplifted and empowered themselves and their communities in 2018.

In addition to honouring three deserving gogos and gogo groups, the three most productive community vegetable gardens were also recognised on the day, Additionally, over 60 local grandmothers who completed a six month sewing course through Hact over the course of 2018 were awarded with certificates of completion.

Marketing and fundraising spokesperson Rebekka Stredwick said that they are celebrating the gogos who’ve shown a great deal of dedication over the last six months.

Of the graduates, Stredwick said: “It’s such an honour seeing them this happy because they’ve worked hard to be where they are today.

“These gogos will now be able to provide for their families with the skills they’ve acquired from the sewing course,” she concluded.

HREE people were injured in a shoot-out when suspects allegedly opened fire on a vehicle it was driving near Milky Way Road in Shongweni on Sunday afternoon.

Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said that reports from the scene indicated that four people were on their way home from the funeral of a taxi industry operator in KwaNdengezi when the shooting occurred at around 2.10 pm.

“Reports from the scene indicate that unknown suspects used an AK47 and a 9mm pistol to open fire on the victims’ vehicle.

“It is believed that at least three people were injured during the shooting. Their friends arrived at the scene and transported them to hospital.

“It is unclear at this stage whether the suspects had followed the victims’ vehicle or whether they had been lying in ambush before opening fire,” Mathios said.

Netcare 911 Paramedics and the SAPS attended the scene of the crime.

The incident is being investigated.

A gang of armed robbers who pretended to be a courier service delivering a parcel stormed their way into a home in Mosley Park, near the Upper Highway area, and robbed the residents of their valuables last week.

Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said the suspects rang the doorbell of the home in Theron Place and told the domestic worker that they had arrived to deliver a parcel.

The incident occurred at around 11.15am.

“The domestic worker opened the gate for them and three suspects, armed with firearms, ran into the house and held up the domestic worker, her employer, and her employer’s mother.

The suspects ransacked the house and demanded that the victims hand over the jewellery that they were wearing.

The gang fled with a laptop, television and other valuables.

No injuries were reported,” Mathios said.

Mathios advised home owners to educate their domestic workers and gardeners regarding the various modus

operandi that criminals use to gain entry into homes, especially during the day when residents are usually at work.

“We have had reports of criminals posing as a range of people who may legitimately require access to the property, from courier and fast food deliverymen to water and electricity meter readers,” Mathios said.

“It’s important to warn your domestic staff of these tactics employed by criminals and to advise them not to open the gate for any reason unless they have first contacted you to find out whether you are expecting any delivery and taken steps to establish the correct identity of the person standing outside,” Mathios said.

“If the person seems unsure when asked for identification, and your domestic worker suspects he may not be from the company he claims to represent, tell her to rather be safe and not open up.

“If the person at the gate remains persistent contact your local security company and the police,” Mathios said.

THE National Commissioner of Police, General Khehla John Sitole, has strongly condemned the continuous attacks on and killing of police officers, this after two policemen were killed last Tuesday.

Warrant Officer Bhekisigcino Zethembe Khwela (54) was in the company of his son and a friend, chatting outside his house in KwaNdengezi near the Upper Highway area, when at least two gunmen, who were on foot, fired several shots at them. The Mariannhill detective was killed instantly after he was shot multiple times, his son was wounded, and the friend escaped unscathed.

The death of Khwela marked the second death of the day, following the killing of Captain Lumkile Wiseman Tyibilika in New Brighton in the Eastern Cape during the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The motives for both incidents are not conclusive at this stage but form part of investigations. In both incidents, the 72 hour Activation Plan is being implemented.

“The killing of our two colleagues yesterday is a reflection of what police must endure on a daily basis”, said General Sitole.

“I have instructed the Provincial Commissioners of both the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal to mobilise maximum resources to track down those responsible and bring them to book”, added General Sitole.

OOKING with a gas stove has become a burden for the ladies who cook for children that are being taken care of at the Yenzanathi Community Upliftment Project.

Yenzanathi Community upliftment Project is a non-profit organisation (NPO) which provides support services for disadvantaged people and a safe haven for vulnerable children.

Ladies who are heading the kitchen at the Yenzanathi Project, Cebisile Shangase and Khonzeni Xaba, revealed that they are facing issues relating to food preparation on a gas stove.

As they are an NPO, when the gas for the stove runs out, they usually don’t have money to fill it up immediately.

“It’s a very huge problem because we don’t always get monetary donations, so to fill up the gas at any time is a problem,” they said, adding that this problem leads to children being affected as the ladies cannot cook hot meals for them.

The ladies said they are appealing to anyone who might be willing to help the NPO by donating an electric stove as it will be easier to cook hot meals for the children this way.

Xaba added that the stove will also help them to generate an income because they’ll be able to bake and sell

items for a small profit.

“People usually donate stuff that we could use to bake but we are faced with a problem of not having a stove that has oven. That is why we are pleading with our fellow residents to help us,” she said.

In conclusion, Xaba said they hope that residents open their hearts and choose to help them.

As such, the Hillcrest Conservancy will be offering skills development at their Garden Workshop on Wednesday, November 7 at the Springside Nature Reserve, Hillcrest.

Hillcrest Conservancy is a nonprofit group of volunteers which re-

lies on the public’s support to protect the environment.

Of the skills development initiative, spokesperson for the Hillcrest Conservancy Beryl Draper said: “There are several reasons we are offering these classes, including improving gardeners’ skills, conserving our natural environment, and personal safety.”

“We will also tackle the issue of alien plants,” Draper added.

Draper said that the candidates who are going to attend will benefit a lot from what they will be taught.

“Besides learning about plants, the candidates will gain more knowledge on many things that involve the garden and they will also be confident in their work,” said Draper.

To conclude, Draper said that employers are also allowed to attend the event and she encouraged the public to come in their numbers to support

the workshop.

“The Course aims to ensure that gardens comply to some extent with the Alien Plant Control Regulations; are safe working environments; and of which Employers and Employee/s can be proud of and enjoy,” she said.

WITH Guy Fawkes (November 5) and Diwali (November 7) just around the corner, the Hillcrest SAPS warned residents to be cautious when using fireworks during the festivities.

Hillcrest Communications officer Captain Linzi Smith said: “Fireworks can really hurt a person when handled negligently, especially around children and pets,” she said.

Smith said that children and pets are very fragile and she advised parents to be careful with fireworks around them.

“In order to avoid any injuries, parents shouldn’t let children near fireworks without adult supervision and they should take their pets to a safe place where they won’t be frightened by the fireworks,” advised the captain.

FIREWORK SAFETY TIPS FOR RESIDENTS • Plan your fireworks display to make it safe and enjoyable for everyone.

• Store fireworks in a metal box.

• Children should always have an adult to supervise fireworks festivities, especially with sparklers.

• Always back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting the fireworks.

• Never point or throw fireworks at another person.

• Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire and douse used fireworks before discarding them.

• Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks.

• Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in a metal or glass container.

• Never try to re-light or pickup fireworks that have not ignited fully.

• Never place a part of your body directly over a firework device when lighting.

• Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using them.

Petrol price decrease expected in November PHINDILE SHOZI >>Phindile.Shozi@media24.com ON Wednesday last week, the Central Energy Fund (CEF) announced that petrol will drop by 3c per litre in the next month.

In released data, the CEF showed that the possible drop is attributed to a strengthening rand and a decrease in brent crude oil prices.

In the past few months, the South African petrol price has hiked up to R17.08 a litre, which has been a breaking point for many motorists.

Unlike petrol users, diesel users are set to face another hike, an estimated 35c, in November.

Upper Highway motorists shared their views on the proposed petrol price decrease.

Stephanie White said the petrol

hike has affected her a lot as she’s a single mother of three and having to drive her children to school everyday has become very costly.

“I fill a full tank every three days because my children don’t go to the same school and that sums up to R1 000 a week, which means I use R4 000 a month for petrol,” explained the single mother. White ended off by saying that this decrease may seem like nothing to

some people but to her it will mean a lot.

Quinton Baker couldn’t agree more with White, saying: “It will really help as the holidays are coming up and things are very expensive. At least, with the slight decrease, I will stress a little bit less before it increases again.”

Motorist Meagan Mhlongo was less pleased with the announcement, saying that the drop is just a stunt to ease

motorists into further increases.

“This is just how they are trapping us; they want us to think that they are caring for us when in the following month they will increase the petrol price by an even more ridiculous amount,” she said.

In one sense, however, old is still gold. The success of an online con, including phishing (the most pervasive of such scams), hinges largely on human psychology. More precisely, it all tends to boil down to how well the con artist can exploit some of the very things that make us human. And those haven’t undergone much change in, well, quite a while. Instead of crafting special code and laboriously overcoming technical defences, “hacking the human” is generally recognised as the easiest way to steal personal data or money online.

Despite — or perhaps thanks to — some obvious limitations in terms of physical propinquity when it comes to online space, romance scammers can build rapport with victims nearly at (ill) will. As with a genuine online relationship, it won’t probably be love at first sight and the grooming of the “mark” may take quite some time. How-

ever, once the “romance” finally blossoms, it’s easy enough to take things to the next level — to part the beguiled from their money. Several forces shape, or contribute to, a potential victim’s susceptibility to this fraud.

For one thing, we flock to dating sites in search of romantic relationships, which may leave us somewhat predisposed to building attachments with other people and to taking for granted the good faith of the prospective partner. Of course, scammers also prey on users of social media where social interaction is often the reason to be there in the first place. The sense of a perceived bond also leads to some degree of dependence, as does the need for approval from our (apparent) love interest. And when the “soulmate” tugs at our heartstrings with an urgent request to help foot the treatment bill for their child, who suddenly turns out to be hooked up to hospital monitors, is also where our empathy and sympathy really kick in.

Other schemes aim to appeal to our desire for something less noble than everlasting love. All of us have probably been “blessed” with an e-mail that promised a fortune in exchange for what is typically an upfront fee that, when you think about it, seems truly minuscule compared to the “riches” awaiting you. It could take any number of forms, such as a Nigerian prince scam or a lottery scam.

However, all of them ultimately seek to take advantage of our desire for enrichment.

If you’re like most people, you’ve probably stopped to

think at least once about what all those zeroes in the promised money could buy. Arguably, it may not always be easy to think straight when faced with the opportunity to, once and for all, escape the daily schlep. This is doubly true when the offer adds other ingredients to the mix. It will be uniqueness (you, not your neighbour or mother-inlaw, received the offer); scarcity (the “supply” is limited); and urgency (the time to act is, well, yesterday).

And, perhaps just as importantly: what if — despite all the red flags urging you to run the other way — the opportunity is genuine, as that nagging feeling tells you?

Complicating things further, if you do succumb, it’s not over for you — and certainly not for the scammer. Instead, you’re likely to face more requests for additional and ever higher “processing fees”, bribes, and so on. You may well find the pleas increasingly difficult to resist, for which you can blame your hardwired reluctance to admit to a bad decision and give up hope, or a cognitive bias known as sunk-cost fallacy. Or, like a hapless gambler, you will continue to “invest” money to recoup your losses. But the house always wins. The need to “act now or all hell will break loose” is a staple in phishing campaigns, which aim to trick us into divulging login credentials, and in other scams tricking us into installing malware. Knowing that rushing you into acting immediately is likely to cloud your judgment, fraudsters go all out in their attempts to invoke a false sense of urgency. It’s only natural that we feel com-

pelled to act swiftly: we don’t want anybody to mess with our bank or email accounts, which is exactly what the “alert” or “notification” is likely to be about. The sense of apprehension can be enough to distract us from the warning signs about something being amiss that might otherwise not escape our attention. We’re mostly conditioned to obey authorities, and it is this respect for, and perceptions of, authority that phishers turn against us in their attacks. They let the presence of authority cues and our adherence to social norms do the heavy lifting for them.

By impersonating police, the taxman or another trusted authority or entity such as a bank, online payments provider or e-mail service provider, the phishers will try to instruct us to act on pain of facing some unwanted, and usually dire, consequences. Like the sense of immediacy, when we’re gripped by fear or panic, our ability to think critically may give way to impulsive actions.

While this (over)confidence can be helpful in many situations, it can also skew the perceptions of our own strengths and weaknesses, leaving us vulnerable in the “knowledge” that “it cannot happen to me”.

Ultimately, it may also help explain why some people fall for phishing campaigns, and why they do so repeatedly. Verizon’s Data Breach Investigations Report recently claimed that “the more phishing emails someone has clicked, the more they are likely to click in the future”.

ALLING in love with a sport like cycling, one that is not all that common in their community, made friends Qaphelani Dladla (16) and Lindokuhle Ngubo (15) determined to achieve stardom and bring medals back to their community.

Qaphelani said: “Cycling is said to be a ‘white people’ sport and some members in our community laugh at us and tell us we should just play soccer. However, we chose to follow our dreams and ignore what people say,” he said.

Lindokuhle explained that the pair have even received threats from the community, saying that they had been told to not come in certain places to train on their bicycles because they will get what they are looking for.

“They told us to use the pavement when we are training, and the people who are using the pavement tell us to use the road where anything that has wheels are, but the drivers are also giving us a hard time,” he explained.

“Those are the challenges that we come across each and every day but we don’t care anymore because we know where we are headed with our sports,” said Qaphelani, who further said that if they were to dwell on what people have been saying about them, they wouldn’t be where they are today.

“The love we have for it has pushed us this far and we can’t let people take that away from us,” added Lindokuhle.

In conclusion, the duo said that their message to the public is: “Don’t listen to what people are saying about you because if you do, you will never achieve your true dreams.”

Highbury Grade R’s take on a new challenge HIGHBURY Preparatory School was buzzing with excitement last week as Headmaster Mr Roland Lacock cut the ribbon to signal the official opening of the new single-track mountain bike route for the Grade Rs. Highbury invited Enduro racer Matthew Camp, who is in Grade 12 at Kearsney, to demonstrate some awesome mountain biking technical skills, after which he then lead groups of excited Grade R boys through the course for the first time.

Estate Manager, were both kitted up on their bikes, ready to teach the boys how to navigate their way between the forest of trees, through the tunnel of bushes and over roots, sand, grass and across the “rock garden”.

Belinda Willows, Head of Foundation Phase, said: “There’s a catchy saying, ‘You’re only one mountain bike ride away from a good mood.’

“When you finish a bike ride, there is a reason you feel energized and happy… science! When you sweat and move your body, you release endorphins and other ‘happy hormones’

that help change your mood for the better. There’s a whole lot more smiling throughout the day when our boys have had an early morning workout.

“At Highbury we are blessed with a beautiful big field which is the Grade R playground — a great place to exercise, run and play.

Innovative sanitary wear solution SUBZ founder Sue Barnes created an innovative sanitary wear solution to tackle South Africa’s education crisis When Sue Barnes opened a letter from her daughter’s school, she didn’t anticipate the incredible journey she was about to embark upon based on the simple request: “Please donate sanitary pads”. But it was this heartfelt cry for assistance in 2010 that prompted the KwaZulu-Natal resident to design and manufacture one of the country’s first reusable sanitary pads as a way to restore dignity to every young woman.

“When I read the letter from an NPO asking for assistance, I started to make enquiries,” recalled Barnes, an award-winning philanthropist. “What I found out shocked me. Marginalised schoolgirls in rural areas were missing a week of school every month because they didn’t have access to sanitary pads. As a mother of two dyslexic daughters, I considered the impact this absence would have on their education. There is just no way they would catch up the missed work.”

Having studied fashion design, and with years of experience within the clothing industry, Barnes had the expertise to create a product that offered a sustainable solution.Drawing on her knowledge of materials, she designed three prototypes, searching for a product that would match the absorption ability of a disposable sanitary pad with reusable qualities.

“The first prototype was a panty with built-in pad but it was too bulky and messy,” explained Barnes. “I refined the design so that it was a panty with clip-on pads. Easy to use and comfortable to wear.”

After eight months she perfected the final product — Subz Pants and Pads — washable pads and panties that can be reused for up to five years. The panty is made from 100% cotton, and the pads are made from five layers of specialised, absorptiontested fabric. Between 1 000 and 3 000 packs are now manufactured in Durban monthly.

Barnes believed reusable sanitary pads were the only real solution to address the educational and emotional impact a lack of sanitary wear was having on impoverished young women. The financial savings, when compared with the disposable counterpart, is considerable, amounting to thousands of rands. The environmental benefits are also beyond compare. With the recent release of the UN Climate Report outlining the dire realities of climate change, sustainable products are not only a preferred option, they are now essential.

Because the creation of Subz Pants and Pads was always intended to meet the needs of disadvantaged young women, Barnes established the NPO extension, Project Dignity, in 2014. Through corporate and individual sponsorship, Project Dignity’s ambassadors are able to go into schools across the country and distribute the products to worthy youngsters.

“When we started distributing, we quickly realised that this needed to be more than just arriving at a school and handing out the products with a list of instructions,” recalled Barnes. “There are many cultural reservations when it comes to menstruation and physical development, so we decided to establish an educational programme that addressed this in a fun, interactive way.”

The Project Dignity ambassadors have an extensive database of schools and NPOs requiring donations of Subz packs.

As sponsorship arrives, they head to the schools where they address the young women, engaging them in meaningful discussion, after which the Subz packs are distributed.

“The reaction from these young women is always incredible,” said Barnes. “I remember one occasion, I was working at the

Sustainability Show, and a young girl — who was a recipient of the pads a while back — approached me and explained how she was able to finish school and study to be a paramedic because of the donation.

“We are able to assist girls and allow them to live their dreams with dignity and a smile on their faces. It’s incredible.”

OVERCOMING THE CHALLENGES With any new product that veers from the “tried-and-tested”, there are concerns.

When it comes to reusable sanitary pads, Barnes said the first question always centred on the cleaning of the pads: “At first, people are concerned about touching menstrual blood, but when we point out that they wash their underwear anyway, they realise there is no difference.”

There is also a lack of support from government level. “We receive no funding or assistance in the distribution of packs, and this is our biggest hurdle. It’s possibly a lack of long-term vision. While reusable pads cost more initially, the savings are substantial,” Barnes said.

Logistically, the reusable packs work in well with the high school structure because the five-year longevity of the product means that a girl entering Grade eight will be able to use the same Subz pack throughout high school. There is no need for monthly school visits for donations, or massive storage space on school premises to hold all the products.

“We are definitely making inroads,” commented Barnes. “To date we’ve distributed in the region of 140 000 packs nationwide, but the demand is increasing. I’m not sure if it’s that we’re more well-known or the population growth, but our list of requests keeps going. We really need corporate sponsors to come on board so we can empower these young girls. The impact on their personal lives and education is beyond measure, and if we’re going to address the gaps in society in some tangible way, then this is a really effective option.”

UR eyes are like precious jewels and our eyesight is one of our most important assets. Despite this, many South Africans are not as attentive to their eye health as they are about other aspects of their health,” said KwaZulu-Natal ophthalmologist Dr Yavische Reddy­ during Eye Care Awareness Month, which was held between September 23 and October 18 this year.

Reddy said that vision loss can have a variety of different causes and affects people of all ages and groups.

“Vision loss can either occur gradually over time or rapidly, depending on what is causing it,” Reddy said.

She said it is important for a condition such as glaucoma, for example, to be identified and treated before it goes on to cause serious vision loss. Cataracts, which quite commonly develop in elderly people, can be surgically removed, the lens replaced, and eyesight restored.

Eyeglasses, surgery, medicines and other interventions may be used to assist people with eye and vision problems.

THE IMPORTANCE OF CHECK-UPS “The importance of maintaining good eye health and of having your eyes and eyesight regularly checked by an optometrist or, if necessary, an ophthalmologist, a specialist concerned with the study and treatment of disorders and diseases of the eye, cannot be over-emphasised. We recommend that all

South Africans have check-ups, preferably at least once every two years, to ensure that their eyes remain in good health.”

Dr Reddy highlights three conditions that commonly negatively impact the eyesight of many South Africans.

GLAUCOMA Glaucoma is a progressive condition that results in damage to the eyes’ optic nerve. It usually progresses relatively slowly and initially has no symptoms, pain or vision loss. If left untreated, however, it results in decreasing peripheral vision, and eventually tunnel vision and blindness.

“Glaucoma is detected by assessing your intraocular pressure, examining the optic nerve, and checking the visual field. There is currently no cure for glaucoma and vision lost as a result of the disease cannot be restored.

Treatment, however, can prevent further loss of vision. Depending on the severity of the disease, treatment may include eye drops, laser treatments and/or certain minor surgical procedures.”

DIABETIC EYE DISEASE Dr Reddy says that people with diabetes are at risk of developing diabetic eye disease, which refers to a group of conditions. These include diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular oedema and cataracts, all of which have the potential to cause vision loss and blindness.

“Diabetic retinopathy typically lacks early symptoms and often goes unnoticed until visual loss occurs. This vision loss is sometimes

irreversible. Early detection and treatment can reduce the risk of blindness by up to 95%.

It is therefore critical for people with diabetes to get a comprehensive dilated eye examination at least once a year.”

AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION Age-related macular degeneration, also known as AMD, typically affects patients over the age of 50 years. It causes damage to the macula, a small spot near the centre of the retina, which is needed for sharp, central vision and enables us to see objects directly ahead.

“There are two variants of AMD: one progresses slowly due to deposits and atrophy in the retinal tissue, and the other develops rapidly due to bleeding in and under the retinal tissue. AMD does not result in complete blindness, but may greatly hinder everyday tasks such as driving, reading, cooking and writing. It is important for those with AMD to stop smoking and eat a diet high in green leafy vegetables and omega fatty acids.”

EYE CARE TIPS Use eye protection — avoid unnecessary eye injuries by using protective eyewear that wraps around the eyes when working in an environment where there is a risk of something getting into your eyes, such as dust, metal fragments or chemicals. Also consider wearing protective eyewear when engaging in sports where balls or racquets are used, as they may pose a risk for eye injury.

OST families have some — distant cousins, stepchildren or, in the motoring world, offspring born of joint ventures. Toyota’s Aygo city car is built by one of these, a company called Toyota Peugeot Citroën Automobile Czech (TPCA). Located at Kolin (population 31 000), a town in the Czech Republic, it employs 3 200 local people. They build essentially just one product and it’s labelled Toyota Aygo, Peugeot 108 or Citroën C1. Minor details vary.

South Africans buy roughly 97 of them each month, with Darryl Jacobson’s True Price organisation judging it as the entry-level car that best holds its resale value: “Achieving 75% of original list price at auction, it’s the clear leader in resale values,” he says.

The local range consists of four choices: Aygo, the base car that can be had in three monochrome colours; Aygo X-Play Black — same specification but solely in two-tone with black roof and Cherry Red body; Aygo X-Play Silver that’s similar but silver over black and upscale Aygo X-Cite that comes standard in Ice White although six other colours are available optionally. X-Cite adds a powered black Funroof — a rollback canvas section — and a small specification upgrade. This consists of side curtain airbags that bring the total up to six and 15-inch alloy wheels to replace 14-inch steel rims with plastic caps.

A trade-off is that the standard spacesaver spare makes way for a pump kit.

Our test car was an X-Play Silver unit and, if we were buying one for ourselves, we would fit a set of aftermarket, 14-inch alloy wheels. This would overcome the hassles of lost, stolen or scratched caps, look smarter and maintain the reassurance offered by a spare wheel. Apart from the airbags, it also includes ABS brakes with Brake Assist, vehicle stability control, hill start assistance, ISOFix anchors with top tethers, childproof locks, rear fog lamps and central locking.

While researching this car we noticed that although it’s priced very close to Toyota’s own Etios, that Indiabuilt car outsells this one by a factor of about 11. Superior rear legroom and a bigger boot explain a lot, but this one has charm of its own. We noted Aygo’s added safety features (at least two more airbags, hill start and VSC) and its internal simplicity and decided that it would make a brilliant student car. New drivers like its manoeuvrability (9,6-metre turning circle and light steering), easy to reach gearshift lever, seven-inch touchscreen

Although rear seat legroom doesn’t cater for huge rugby players, your 5’4” student and three of her buddies will be delighted. But as an experiment, we loaded the car up with three large male journalists who found that, for journeys up to about sixty kilometres, co-pilot and rear passenger could co-exist peacefully.

Aygo may not be the budget, mass favourite that Etios is, but within its design brief it’s perfectly sized, fun to drive, economical to run and just a little Bohemian. That’s what makes it special. — Gordon Hall

SA’s singing sensation — Deep Bright P

ROUDLY SA and Proudly KZN Bright Nkanyiso Dlungwana, aka Bright Deep, born 1992, hails from the Upper Highway area from a small township called St Wendolins. He is also a soldier by profession.

Being raised by a grandmother in a small township taught him a lot about life, especially how to hold onto being a good person while being completely vulnerable to every bit of bad society like drugs and bullying. He believes that all his life experiences as a child have made him a better artist.

In 2014, Bright Deep was called up for SANDF (South African National Defence Force) training, which is when he withdrew from the entertainment industry. In 2016, he deployed to the DRC with the SANDF for more than year. This year cemented in his soul that he belongs in “entertainment”, music in particular. He wrote 73 songs while he was deployed in the Congo!

Being a soldier and an artist at the same time was not a good experience for him. He describes balancing the two as climbing a mountain without a rope.

Bright Deep describes his sound as Hip Hop mixed with a little of Afro Pop and RnB. Recently he released a single Get Dirty, which his fans have confirmed a “Hit.” When he released Get Dirty, the feedback was so overwhelming, he wasn’t quite sure if it was for real.

Get Dirty was produced by Stan.

Inspired locally by Loyiso Bala and HHP and internationally by Nas, the young Nkanyiso used to imitate Tupac while growing up.

Growing up, his older brother used to play many different genres from Hip Hop to Pop. It was especially Hip Hop that Bright Deep ended up falling in love with. As time went on, he started putting his own words in all the songs his brother played, even funny and wrong, starting as most of us do by walking in the footprints of those who have gone before us.

He started writing his own lyrics at the age of 14, writing about his childhood experiences.

He was always fascinated by the words in every Tupac song. He was inspired by how Tupac took what happened in society and in his own life and put it into music. To him, Tupac was a true artist and poet. It made him realise that he could be a musical artist, that he had talent yet to be actualised.

Bright Deep is signed to New York based record label Bentley Records.

He has also signed a distribution and publishing deal with Gallo.

Locally he is managed by a well known and loved Durban Youth Radio Presenter and DJ — DJ Worldwide.

Bright Deep had a taste of the big time when he wrote all the music and featured in the movie Uhlanga: The Mark, written & produced by award winning author Ndaba ka Ngwane.

The story of 9 year old Khaba Mkhize (played by Sbo Da Poet Mbutho), Mandla Thabede (played by Linda “Mr Magic” Sibiya) inspires Khaba to challenge the status quo.

The Sunflower Women’s Football Club continue to change the lives of girls in the area.

HE Sunflower Women’s Football Club continue to do great work in empowering the young girls of the local community through football and a number of other programmes that have stemmed from their footballing success.

The club came into existence in 1996 when a group of girls wanted to play football, but didn’t want to have to play with the boys. The club has evolved remarkably from its early days and now, as part of the Elite Athlete Development Programme supported by the KZN Department of Sport and Recreation, will continue to support young girls.

“The biggest highlights of the 21 years that the club has been in existence for was definitely our victory at the 2017 KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Championships,”the club’s consultant Lona Benya said.

“From there we were nominated as Team of the Year at this year’s KZN Sports Awards.

“We were the first women’s team to be nominated for the award,” Benya said.

With four players currently preparing for the Under 17 FIFA World Cup in Uruguay, one player with the national U20 side and one other with the senior national side, there are a number of

players making the step up to international level.

The influence on the girls of Hammarsdale goes far beyond the four lines of the football pitch, with a number of initiatives in place that increase their influence on the women of their community.

“We have a Santa Shoe Box programme where we give out gifts to the needy, as well as a Girls Play Safe programme.

“In the Girls Play Safe programme, we use football and karate as part of a life skills initiative.

“There are also administration courses that we run, but we have many, many initiatives that we champion to try and better the lives of the girls and give them opportunities,” Benya mentioned.

The Sunflower Women’s Football Club started as a football club but has ballooned into something much larger and more significant, although the football team continues to break ground and perform at the highest level.

Nine players represented the City of Durban in Germany for the 2016 One Nations Cup and six players played in Japan for the 2018 edition, coming back with bronze medals.

“A number of the girls have been able to travel around the world through football and we have always pushed the notion that football can take you to so many different places.

“Our executive committee and the national lottery support the girls tremendously,”she added.

The side’s inclusion in the Elite Athlete Development Programme is the next step in nurturing the talent that they have at their disposal.

“Dr Subban and the team at Prime have been very supportive and have helped the girls understand the importance of nutrition as well as helping them with diet advice and physical training support.

“We have been at Prime on Monday for a recovery session after our match on the weekend.

“Having this sort of support is going to be crucial in the development of the girls into better players,” Benya commented.

Head coach Siyabonga Malinga has been a crucial part of the club since its inception and he is currently in his practical phase to become an accredited football instructor after finishing the theory process.

Sharks stars ready to shine NO matter what the outcome of Saturday’s Currie Cup final, fans of the Cell C Sharks will get a chance to meet many of their heroes up-closeand-personal at the annual STIHL Sharks Trail Adventure at the Summerveld Estate on Sunday, December 2.

The family-orientated day includes four MTB races and two trail runs, all based around the leafy Summerveld equestrian complex, catering for athletes for all abilities, with the serious runners targeting the 18km trail run and the MTB pros keen to win the prestigious 40km STIHL MTB Marathon, won by Andrew Hill last year.

At the other end of the spectrum, the iconic mascot of the Cell C Sharks, Sharkie, will be on hand to start the short and easy Kids Ride at 11am, where parents are encouraged to accompany their youngster from start to finish.

SINCE 2010, a group of committed cyclists have tackled the Ride for MRP Foundation, a gruelling 606 km ride with purpose from Johannesburg to Durban, spanned over two days, to break the cycle of poverty and inequality in South Africa. This year’s edition (December 2 and December 3) will see Leon Crous and Dave Duke, who have both completed the Ride for MRP Foundation seven times, resulting in over 8 000 km of road time between them, cycling the endurance ride wearing the respected yellow jersey.

To reward cyclists for committing to the cause year after year, cyclists ride in different colour jerseys dependant on the number of times they’ve completed the challenge. First and second time cyclists ride in white, third and fourth time cyclists in pink, five times or more in green and the yellow jersey is worn by the riders who have completed the event the most times. The Absa Red Jersey is worn by the cyclist who has raised the most funds from the previous edition.

Duke and Crous, the two cyclists riding in yellow, are not professional athletes and have to find time during their busy work and life schedules to train for the grueling event. Craig Jones, who originally started the fundraising event nine years ago and would have been cycling for the ninth time, had to bow out of this year’s edition for health reasons.

Both cyclists feel the responsibility and honour of riding in yellow for the first time, with Dave, General Manager of SMEC — Urban and Social Development — Africa Division, saying: “It is an honour to be riding in yellow but it’s more about the ride than being in yellow. I look forward to this every year — that sense of achievement and uplifting feeling you get from spending time with your colleagues. I keep coming back because it’s the best two days you will ever spend on a bike and I’ll be back for the next year’s tenth edition. The cherry on top is knowing that what you’re doing will help other people.”

For Leon, Director of REPS (Real Estate and Property Service), “The jerseys challenge riders to come back. Being in yellow, it’s important to raise as much funding as I can and be an example to first timer riders so that they return. I love challenges and I have a never say die attitude to raise as much funds for MRP Foundation as I can.”

This year’s Ride for MRP Foundation is hoping to raise over R1 million for the MRP Foundation, with funds raised going towards empowering thousands of young South Africans through skills development and education programmes.

From 2007 to 2011, MRP Foundation’s Entry Level Retail Programme trained 28 010 youth with 12 714 placed in jobs. In 2017, over 1 500 educators were empowered with professional skills and content knowledge and since 2005 over 300 000 learners from 260 schools have benefitted from the Physical Education Programme. MRP Foundation also supports 31 Early Childhood Development Centres in Hammarsdale, KwaZulu-Natal, and 31 Early Childhood Development Centres in QwaQwa, Free State.
