National Police Day celebrated H

ILLCREST SAPS celebrated National Police Day — honouring their men and women in blue on Sunday, January 27.

Of the event, SAPS communications officer Linzi Smith said: “Hillcrest SAPS was privileged to host National Police Day. We were graced with the presence of acting Cluster Commander Brigadier Singh, Hillcrest CPF Chairman Steven King, members of our neighbourhood watches, other senior officers and members of SAPS from other stations within our cluster. Members from Metropolitan and AVBOB also offered a talk to our members.”

“A small tour was given, some speeches were made and a light lunch was sponsored by the Hillcrest CPF for all. We are grateful that the weather held out and fun was had by all.”

The Hillcrest Community Policing Forum (CPF) also came on board to assist with a “station upgrade”.

“Since last week Thursday, all four of our cells were repainted completely and the garden was given a complete

make-over. Our courtyard was to be retarred but, due to the weather, it was postponed,” said Smith.

Hillcrest CPF Steven King said that, as part of their appreciation for the hard work and dedication from the members, the CPF had arranged the upliftment program which included renovations to the station and a braai. He said that they will continue with the renovations over the next couple of months.

Of the initiative, King said: “We started off by painting the cells, cleaned up the garden and repaired the gate at the station. We have engaged various role players and businesses who have come on board to help with the project.

“Watercrest Mall, Thorburn Security and SA community crime watch has put their weight behind the project and other role players have also shown an interest in coming on board as well,” he said, adding that the CPF is looking forward to the challenge and if any companies or individuals would like to assist they can contact him at 082 920 5799 or e-mail cpfhillcrest@gmail.com

FTER being crowned The Face of Just You New York City recently, Upper Highway’s rising star, Savannah De Almeida, shared her journey to success with the Fever­, advising the youth to never give up on their dreams.

“I aim to inspire individuals and all aspiring artists to never stop chasing their dreams and to remember that international goals are not impossible to achieve,” said De Almeida.

“The journey with The Face of Just You has been amazing and I have been on the go non-stop, from newspaper interviews and radio interviews to photoshoots.

“The journey has only just begun, there is still much to do and I am excited for the journey ahead as an artist,” she explained.

De Almeida added that she still can’t believe that she’s the one who took the crown, and she still has to pinch herself whenever she’s in conversation with someone about it.

“To be honest, when I’m in conversation and someone asks about the Face of Just You, I still have to pinch myself and say ‘hey that’s you’.It’s such an honour to be an ambassador for such an incredible

agency.

“There are some exciting things planned for the future and I can’t wait to share them with everyone,” said De Almeida.

Even though there were hurdles, where she thought this was it for her, the support she got from her family, friends and the agency kept De Almeida going.

“Sometimes it still feels unreal, I wake up some days thinking it was a dream and then remind myself ‘no that actually happened’,” she says.

De Almeida wants her audience to know that, no matter how hard the situation is, one should never give up on their dreams.

“I have experienced so many ‘no’s’, and I still get rejection in the industry, but I will never give up because I’ve worked so hard to get to where I am now and I know where I am going from here. The journey is not easy and it requires lots of hard work,” she advised.

In conclusion she said: “If there’s one thing I can say to all aspiring artists it is this — sometimes, when I am feeling very overwhelmed, I remind myself that God has a plan for us that is so much greater than the plans we have for ourselves.”

Aiming to create a brighter future for all PHINDILE SHOZI >>Phindile.Shozi@media24.com BRINGING a brighter future to all South Africans is what non-profit organisation Brighter Future is hoping to achieve.

The NPO was founded in 2017 by a group of KwaZulu­-Natal residents who regularly volunteered for a variety of NPOs and discovered that one of the biggest gaps in the South African NPO network was business skills.

Brighter Future chairperson, and one of the founders, Chantalle Wilson explained that in South Africa alone there are over 200 000 NPOs. “They all compete for the same resources, have similar dreams, and what we discovered is we need to follow a number of processes and procedures to correctly register, to ensure that they don’t land themselves in hot water when it comes to things like fund-raising, governance and tax compliance,” she said.

The NPO’s mission is to bring about a brighter future for all South Africans. “The organisation aims to do this through educating, empowering and supporting a network of NPOs to build the required

business skills needed to create organisations that are sustainable in the long term,” she said, adding that this includes providing educational support, information and materials to this network.

“Currently the organisation runs a Sanctuary Project, which is a rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming initiative that is used to put the tools, ideas and key learnings from the NPO into practice before sharing with other organisations,” she explained.

“It also co-manages various fundraising initiatives for specific projects in partnership with other selected NPOs; projects that are selected based on Brighter Future’s primary objective to empower the most vulnerable,” she further explained.

Talk Sign campaign launches in Durban PURNAL POONUSAMY >>Purnal.Poonusamy@media24.com THE KwaZulu-Natal Blind and Deaf Society (KZNBDS) recently held the launch of their sixth annual Talk Sign campaign, which took place at the Pavilion Hotel in Durban.

The campaign, which is focused on Talk Sign Day on March 8, aims at reaching out to those who are deaf and promoting South African sign language (SASL).

Present at the launch were Fulton School for the Deaf, the three new campaign ambassadors, as well as various other key role players.

The Fulton School choir performed two songs completely in SASL. Former pupil of Fulton, and now a mime performer at Ushaka Marine World, Sibo Masando performed a Zumba demonstration and signed about his life story, which was simultaneously translated by Thembeka Chili. Various key note speakers also discussed the importance of SASL and the need for it to reach a wider audience.

One such speaker was ambassador Taskeen Ameer, who is an audiologist at St Martin De Pores School in Port Shepstone — a school that caters for intellectually disabled children as well as deaf pupils. Ameer has been a part of the Talk Sign campaign for the past two years, and has been instrumental in the school’s deaf awareness committee. She is excited to come on board as an ambassador for this year’s campaign.

“This campaign is close to my heart. I have always wanted to learn sign language and work with deaf children ever since I started studying audiology. It was my passion.

“When I started working at St Martin’s school, I was so inspired by my deaf colleagues as well as students. It’s sad that there are so many misconceptions about deaf people. Deaf children are just like any other child. They are talented, smart, funny, athletic, artistic, and have their own personalities,” she said.

Speaking on the importance of SASL and the Talk Sign campaign, Ameer stated how sign language helped the pupils communicate with one another, and how it can bridge the gap between the deaf and hearing communities.

“From my experience with this campaign, the response has always been so positive. There are a lot of people who do want to learn sign language, but they are not aware of where to go to find and get the resources. This campaign therefore allows us to educate and inform people in the community about learning sign language.

“I really hope that we can reach a point in the future where a deaf child or person is able to step out into the world and everyone around them knows some basic sign language.”

To show support for the campaign, one can buy a sticker for R10 from KZNBDS and wear it on Talk Sign Day. Supporters can also share the experience of SASL by learning certain phrases (found on their website talksign.co.za) and sharing the moment on Instagram with the hashtag #talksignday, proceeds from this will go towards education and job placement for those who are Deaf.

Molweni model seeks to inspire the youth PHINDILE SHOZI >>Phindile.Shozi@media24.com MOLWENI resident Aphiwe Sikakane aims to prove that anyone can make a difference, no matter what his or her background may be.

The 10-year-old model said she wants inspire other people, especially the younger generation, to follow their dreams.

Chatting to the Fever, the young model, who has 13 sashes to her name, said that she’s been modelling for four years and she hopes to carry on in the industry and one day be crowned Miss South Africa.

“I started modelling at the age of six and I have managed to win most of the titles,” she said.

Aphiwe recently entered Miss Inspire South Africa and is appealing to the Upper Highway community to vote for her as she wishes to repre-

sent her community in the pageant. “I hope to be the best in what I do, and I ask the community members to vote for me,” the young hopeful said.

The Miss Inspire South Africa National pageant places priority on community development and making a difference in your own life as well as the lives of others. It is open to all SA ladies who will compete in age categories, irrespective of race, religion, creed, size or shape.

Aphiwe said that she was inspired to enter for this pageant by her role model and manager Andile Mbhele-Dlamini because she’s always helping young women and children. “She visits schools to talk to the youth about following their dreams and not let circumstances hold them back. She also donates pads too,” she said.

WORLD Cancer Day is an international day marked on February 4.

The day is an initiative of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) which aims to reduce premature cancer deaths, and those due to non-communicable diseases, by 25% by 2025 through awareness initiatives such as World Cancer Day. There is hope for cancer patients as currently there are just over 43 million people alive within five years of a cancer diagnosis.

The UICC is committed to its “Treatment for All” campaign that has five pillars: enabling high quality data and research; early detection and diagnosis; timely and accurate treatment; and improved supportive and palliative care for cancer patients.

CANSA encourages South Africans to improve their knowledge of cancer and to challenge unhelpful myths and stigma.

HE act of reading aloud is one of the most crucial things a parent or caregiver can do to inspire a child to start reading. It’s believed that reading aloud, especially to children, builds a strong language foundation and introduces vocabulary and critical thinking.

World Read Aloud Day (WRAD) is celebrated on February 1 to encourage parents to play an instrumental role in their children’s education.

As part of a literacy drive, the Kloof Library initiated a series of reading programmes for the community.

Kloof Library’s Salome MeyerLouwrens said that the idea of World Read Aloud Day is to expose people to the written word as it’s not always easy for everybody to read, especially pensioners or people who have bad eyesight and children who are still young and can’t read for themselves.

“It’s really nice to have someone read to you, to expose you to books, stories, and the written and spoken word. It also educates one to have a better vocabulary and it makes reading enjoyable,” said the librarian, who added that it’s important for people to celebrate this day because reading itself is important.

“People will think, with the new electronic age, that reading from a book is not important but the written word will always be important, no matter where you are reading from, and actually having a physical book in your hand and reading it, or being read to, is a very important part of our lives as we learn through words.”

Meyer-Louwrens advised the public not to only celebrate World Read Aloud Day on February 1, but rather they should do it every day because reading is important and it can improve one’s life.

“Reading shouldn’t be limited to this day only but they should use it as a stepping stone.

“It’s nice for parents to read to their children anytime, not just at bedtime. I often see parents here at the library reading to their children, and it brings the parent and child closer together, sharing an experi-

Muslim comedienne bares all PHINDILE SHOZI >>Phindile.Shozi@media24.com

HEAD of a local performance, international comedienne Mona Aburmishan­ talked to the Fever’s Phindile Shozi about her journey in the comedy industry. Aburmishan­ will be performing at the third annual Butlers Comedy Night in Hillcrest on Friday, February 1.

Phindile Shozi (PS): Who is Mona Aburmishan­?

Mona Aburmishan (MA): I am stand-up comic, comedic speaker and emcee based in Chicago. Most notably, I became the first Arab and Muslim woman to perform standup comedy in the nation’s most prestigious institutions: twice at the John F. Kennedy Centre in Washington, DC and Carnegie Hall in New York City.

PS: What have been your highlights thus far?

MA: I regularly do tours internationally, having just completed my Summer tour throughout the West Bank, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. While in London, I was a special featured guest, honouring my own produced tour on Islam Channel as a thriving female Muslim in global entertainment broadcast to over 100 countries.

Similarly, I was a featured guest on Al Bernameg with host Dr. Bassem Youssef (a ground-breaking satirical news program, once North Africa’s version of The Daily Show). I also headlined Comedy Central’s Season 2 and 3, Premier Comedy Central Presents: Stand Up Al Waggif, filmed on location in Dubai, UAE — featured throughout the Middle East and Africa. I was the first female to headline this revolutionary series.

PS: When you’re not performing, what do you do?

MA: When I’m not performing or producing shows internationally I am a sought-after

speaker in various socio-political topics in the United States and the Middle East.

I am also the CEO and director of H3O Global—a non-profit organisation that offers stand-up comedy and improvement workshops for children and adults of all ages. I also have a Master’s in International Development and I’m fluent in English, German and Arabic.

PS: Comedy is mostly known to be done by men. What inspired you to be part of that world?

MA: Chicago comics, especially Chicago female comics, are a well-respected group around the world and we continue to be a force to be reckoned with. I’m finding the same energy here in South Africa; it doesn’t matter your gender, if you’re drawn to do something there’s definitely a possibility or an avenue for you to do it, usually with support from the men around you. In comedy really, it doesn’t matter your gender. It only matters if you’re funny.

PS: What were some of your biggest challenges as a budding comic?

MA: The difficult part of being a comedian is it’s undervalued, until it’s not. The pay structure is bananas. You go from being paid nothing, to getting paid in drink tickets (useless) to when you’ve made it, able to make thousands of dollars for an hour of work. Which leads to really the hardest part about being a comedian: there are no rules to the game. In nearly all professions there are at least rules to the game; in stand-up comedy there are no rules. As soon as someone confidently tells you without a doubt they know the keys to success in stand up, walk away, because they know little and have seen less. Someone worse than you can end up on TV; someone doing comedy a year can get a headlining spot at a club you’ve tried years to get just five minutes of stage time at while your favourite comic

International stand-up comic, comedic speaker and emcee Mona Aburmishan­ is coming to South Africa­ to perform at the Butlers Comedy Night this February. who’s been performing for years can never seem to feel they made it. Or worse yet, your community think you’re a joke, even when you actually did achieve your dream and made it on TV. Recently, I called my grandmother with excitement to tell her I had made it on her favourite morning program. She quietly replied with: “Muna, I saw you on TV yesterday, you were so fat I couldn’t see anyone else.” It’s a combination of work, luck and mountains of gratitude – and a nicer grandmother than mine.

My career is a perfect example of just being ready when luck strikes. Essentially, my entire job is to observe society, write the observation down in a way that makes me laugh = call it a joke, then get the joke to the masses and the rest is up to God and the universe.

PS: Do you remember your first comedy show?

MA: Feminine Comique was a course taught by the now famous Cameron Esposito­. It was a five week stand-up comedy class for women. The final exam was a five-minute stand-up comedy set in front of a live audience. I struggled through the class and didn’t enjoy much of it because it didn’t make sense. However, I managed to create a five minute set and on the night of the show I was beyond nervous. Backstage was the first time I’d talked to myself, and I said, “Mona you got this, just say the words and don’t throw up and you’ll be great.” Arab chicks don’t often coach themselves into scary situations, instead we just repeat the jargon from what our parents might say in that situation: “Ooooft Muna, you’re not married, you’re not a doctor and you have an expensive degree in kak and now you want to be a clown in front of all these dumb Americans. Wow, I should’ve never survived occupation to come to America for a dream when you are now my nightmare.”

Despite what I thought my parents would say, I trusted my instincts and did a pretty good set. After I got off stage, I was hit with a euphoria so high that I could only compare it to skydiving. The rush of adrenaline, dopamine and serotonin was so powerful I’ve been hooked on comedy ever since.

PS: Have you ever made a joke and the audience did not laugh?

MA: Oh absolutely, and how I react to it not being funny ends up making people laugh, so it always works out.

I don’t talk about the same things other females are talking about on stage right now (think Amy Schumer), which at times can make me feel less appreciated. I once had a fellow comic say, “Yeah, we get it.

You’re Arab.” That same comic went on

stage and talked about being black for 20 minutes. With some of my material coming from a global perspective, I don’t often feel understood or appreciated but when I am, it feels more rewarding than anything else.

PS: Where do you get your material from?

MA: What I love about comedy is it is complex; it’s the only art form where you need other people to create your art. A musician, singer, actress, filmmaker, writer, painter and even a magician can create their art alone and deliver it complete to an audience. However, a comedian needs the audience in the creation process while, at the same time, be powerfully vulnerable as well as incredibly intimate and independent.

Not a single day in the creation process is the same. Literally every single day at work for me is different than the day before or the day after. I will never perform in front of the same audience again, ever…ever.

Some people might see me again but it will never be the same chemistry and group of people in the same circumstance, and that is a very powerful contributing factor in the creation of a comedian’s material. So, learning how to create material for a moving target can be empowering while also totally nerve wracking. Nothing in life is so publicly intimate, which allows for a very powerful connection in a time where digital disconnected is the norm. I also love when comedians tickle my blind spot. Those things you notice or think about but never say; when a comedian points them out in a bold way it resonates with my soul and I feel recognised, understood and not alone. Lastly, I love to laugh. Those painful laughs where your back hurts and you’re worried you might pee a little; I really love that.

PS: What can you say to the people of Hillcrest about the upcoming show?

MA: If you’re drawn to comedy, you’re going to have a blast.

ACK Pullen, a Grade 4 pupil at Highbury Preparatory School, was awarded his Provincial and National Protea Colours for Motorsport recently.

Jack competes in both regional and National Motocross and has plans to compete in a few major international races this year.

Jack set himself a goal of obtaining his National Protea colours in his first year in the sport — a goal that seemed unrealistic and simply too ambitious for anyone to achieve. However, over the course of 2018, Jack demonstrated that through hard work, dedication, commitment and the will to win, anything is indeed possible.

He has been extremely focused and trained hard to improve his muscle memory, heart rate, con-

centration span, his nerve, his stamina and skill.

Gary Pullen, Jack’s proud father, says: “Jack has demonstrated that he is not only the fastest rider in his class on the continent, but a remarkable young man who has made significant sacrifices and learnt, albeit the hard way, of what it takes to be a champion.”

(ECD) centre for a child requires careful consideration by the parents or guardians.

The National Development Agency (NDA) — an agency of the Social Development Department — advises parents to take precautions when choosing ECD centres for their children.

Between January and February is when children go back to school and youngsters are enrolled in local ECD centres.

KZN Department of Social Development spokesperson Ncumisa Ndelu advised parents to ensure that the crèche they have chosen is legal by asking for registration documents, which include registration as an NPO and an ECD, which is done by the department.

Ndelu said: “If parents are not satisfied they can contact the department directly.

“The first step is to assess the needs of the community and then approach the department for assistance with the registration process, but members of the community are encouraged to get in touch with the nearest Social Development office for detailed information.”

According to the NDA, Early Childhood Development is a programme offered to children from birth to school-going age that focuses on the holistic (physical, emotional, cognitive and social) development of the child.

Communications officer at NDA Lesogo Ranchu said: “Children go through remarkable growth with brain development at its peak at this stage, therefore it is imperative that they receive the correct stimulation.”

Ranchu advised parents on what to look for when enrolling their children at ECD centres, in line with compliance matters such as registration, safety and security, learning methodology, teacher training, etc.

Ranchu said: “It is imperative that parents ask the correct questions at the centres of learning to ensure their children are receiving maximum care, support and learning outcomes for their age.”

The NDA said children advance from an ECD centre to Grade R, not only when they have reached the Department of Education’s prescribed age, but they must be able to identify numbers, count from one to 20 at least, have an ability to sort and classify, make comparisons and solve problems.

Ranchu added: “It is proven that children who undergo a good ECD programme will do well throughout their schooling years.”

Below are some tips for parents when looking for an ECD centre.

REGISTRATION AND COMPLIANCE • Check if the ECD centre is registered and if it meets all norms and standards.

• A registration certificate must be displayed on the wall for parents to see.

ECD centres must be registered to ensure the safety of the children.

SAFETY AND PLAY • Does the ECD centre have a fence, wall, lockable gate?

• Is there enough space in the yard for play equipment?

Jungle gyms/swings and other equipment are vital for the development of children’s gross motor skills.

• Is the building housing the ECD centre safe? Are there enough windows? Are there two emergency exits in case of a fire or emergency? Parents must provide the ECD centre with accurate and full contact information to enable the ECD centre to generate communication systems in cases of emergency.

• How many classrooms are there? Are children allocated per age group (0-6 months, 6-18 months, 18 months-3 years, 3-4 years, 4-5 years)? This speaks to responding to the development needs of a child at each major stage of development.

• Each child should be allocated a place to sit (classrooms must have enough tables and chairs for all pupils).

• Parents should ask to see the layout of the classroom.

There are various activity areas that are compulsory: fantasy corner, fine motor development area, art cognitive development area, bag area, ring area, and walls should have charts for shapes, colours, numbers and a daily programme.

• The number of staff in the ECD centre is key — each class must have a qualified practitioner who must be with the children all the time. The other ECD staff (cleaner, cook) cannot replace teaching staff.

ACTIVITIES OF DAILY LIVING • The ECD centre must have sufficient toilets for the children, they should be sized properly and have wash basins that the children can reach.

NUTRITION • Nutrition is key to learning — does the ECD centre offer breakfast or snacks and lunch? An alternative and seasonal menu of the week with a variety of food groups must be displayed.

Guys, it’s 2019 — enough already L

AST week, I answered the phone in my office. The man on the other side of the line asked who he was speaking to. “It’s Stephanie,”I said in my friendly work voice. He kept silent for a moment. Then: “Ooooooh ... Steph-anie,” he drawled. “What a romanticsounding name you have,”he said in his huskiest voice.

“What is this call about?” I asked, effectively cutting him short, in my most clipped tone. I dealt with him officiously, but what I really wanted to say to him, I couldn’t.

I can’t be rude to people at work, although I did once tell-off a repeated heavy breather on the news desk phone some years back. And, she said with a smile on her face, he didn’t call again.

If he had called me at home, perhaps this is what I would have said: “We are no longer living in a world where it is your right to speak to a woman — or a man — like this in the context of a business call. Few women would be flattered by this rather seedy comment from an unknown entity, you. Is your ego so fragile that you have to reassert your worth as a man in this manner in the vain hope of getting some woman to play along and simper back to you?”

I admit that I can resort to being a bit scathing when the need arises.

In my private life I’ve withdrawn business from men who I thought behaved inappropriately, or companies that tolerated it, and I’ll continue to do so. There was the optometrist who pressed up against me in his dark room, for example. And the two GPs who said inappropriate things. And other women agree that men who can’t behave shouldn’t be given our hard-earned cash.

There was a great post on social media last week where a mechanic who had worked on an American woman’s car sent her a text message saying: “You are gorgeous.”

She asked who it was and he responded saying he was her “favourite”

oil-change guy. She responded: “So I feel like this is a teachable moment for you.While I know you wanted to give me a compliment, it was completely unnecessary and unsolicited.

“I am a customer, you are a service provider and there should be no communication between us outside of that unless I, the customer, express interest.

“I am married, we discussed this when I was talking about my car maintenance, so it can be assumed that I am not interested in any compliments/advances from you. When you contacted me I felt a little panicked because you went back in my file and got my number … I have other personal information, like my address, saved there as well … There are men who stalk, rape and murder women getting their address this way.”

She said she was in a quandary about whether to report him to his employer or not and got a fast apology back. She did it with dignity and saved her pièce de résistance for the end.

She told him that he hadn’t given her the correct information about her tyre pressure, so he was not even in her top five oil-change guys, let alone her favourite. Women all over the world applauded. We agree.

As women, we don’t have to entertain creeps and their tactics.

We shouldn’t feel obliged to play along, pretending it’s okay for the sake of flattering a male ego. It’s insidious harassment. It’s taking away what you are, your professional and relationship status, and knocking you down to the level of the kind of person they think should be flattered by their lame, vacuous and totally irrelevant comments.

It’s also often a power dynamic, with men assuming they have more power than a woman, despite him knowing nothing about her.

It’s like men calling us “girlie” or “lady” or “sweetheart” (in South Africa it’s “sweedard”), but that was the subject of another column a way back.

Many men still disrespect women.

There have been countless public campaigns, events and crises which have offered ill-informed men a wakeup call. But some still just don’t get it.

For example, I was immensely disheartened watching the recent video clip of a local delivery man pleasuring himself as a young woman — who was a customer — walked away from him.

I watched it because we were trying to get the number plate off the video to try to identify the creep.

For him, she was not a client of the business he represented. She was not a student perhaps,or a young professional, or any other myriad possibilities. She was downgraded simply to an object for him to use to satisfy his sexual yearnings. And, worryingly, he may now know where she lives.

Talking of exhibitionist tendencies, who else hates the fact that many men pee openly for all to see.

You don’t see women doing that, so why do men think it’s okay?

Are they all so incontinent that they can’t wait for the next pit stop?

Do they not care about exposing themselves and their bodily functions to the world?

Do they think people like seeing them with their private parts out, watering the side of the road?

We even heard this week that some police officers felt compelled to have a wee outside Scottsville Primary School.

Surely they could have gone to Alexandra Road Police Station, or one of the nearby malls to their public toilets?

If women can squeeze it in, why can’t they?

Come on guys. It’s 2019 now. Please treat women as equals. Treat women with dignity.

You’re no longer getting simpering replies. You’re no longer getting away with it.

Recycling volunteers praised for their community spirit KEEP Hillcrest Beautiful Association made an urgent appeal for members of the public to give 30 minutes of their time a month helping at the recycling centre in Delamore road.

This is to say a huge thank you to the volunteers who have given hours of their time. What a wonderful testimony to the residents in our area who are happy to get down and dirty sorting recyclables.

Today, I captured Jacky Barnard and her father Malcolm Hopkins assisting with the backlog. Many thanks to

them and all those who have lent a helping hand.

Despite our best efforts at requesting that no plastic be dropped at our site, regrettably some persons are still doing so. Please bring only paper, cardboard, cans, glass bottles, and large appliance polystyrene – all on five separate containers please – and washed.

Home safety rules every child should know K

EEPING your children safe while at home is a priority for all parents.

It may not be possible to always keep a watchful eye over your children, but there are a few handy rules that you can lay down to ensure that your kids remain safe, even when you aren’t around.

1. Know where to locate the emergency contact list and how to call for help All children, regardless of age, should know how to use a telephone and ask for help. Teaching children to memorise important contact information, as well as how to react in the event of a home emergency, can help them take charge of their safety.

Depending on your child’s age and development, they might not be able to easily identify a dangerous situation.

Parents should consider role-playing with their children to make them more knowledgeable on how to identify and react to a home emergency. This is also a good time to ensure that your child is able to state their full name, age, and address as well as the contact details of his/her parents.

For younger children, it’s a good idea for a list of emergency contacts to be easily accessible. The contact list should be placed in a central area of the house, like on the fridge door. The emergency list should include the contact details of the local police station, fire department, paramedics, the family doctor, as well as a contact number for each parent, and/or a trusted friend or family member.

2. Know how to operate the security system If your home happens to have a security system installed, it’s important that your children understand how to operate it. Whether they need to let themselves into the home after school or deactivate a false alarm, children should

know how to arm and disarm the alarm system. It’s also important for children to be able to locate the panic buttons and know how to activate them.

Be sure to stress the importance of keeping this information confidential. Children should be reminded that arming and disarming the alarm is a family-only secret and should never be shared with any stranger.

3. Avoid opening the door for strangers It’s crucial for parents to stress the importance of not allowing strangers onto the property. Children should be encouraged to keep all doors around the house locked and secure. They should also be advised not to open the front door to anyone that they do not recognise, especially when home alone.

Consider installing security cameras around the house so that your children can view who is at the door without having to jeopardise their safety.

4. Be familiar with the family escape plan A family emergency escape plan should be a priority when it comes to teaching your children about home safety. It is crucial that your kids are aware of what measures to take in the case of a burglary, natural disaster, or fire. In creating your family’s escape plan, the most important thing is to teach your kids the quickest way to get out of the house.

Draw a diagram of your property and highlight the best escape routes for your home. Remember to designate a place to gather outside, in order to account for the safety of each family member.

In your emergency escape plan be sure to also teach your children basic life-saving techniques, like CPR and how to use the first aid kit. Make sure that the first aid kit is in a location which is easily accessible and that your kids are familiar with everything inside of the kit.

5. Know how to practice water safety Children can easily drown in just a few inches of water, which is why children under the age of six should always be supervised while bathing or playing in a pool.

Children have thinner skin than adults and are more vulnerable to burns. To avoid scalding, children should always be taught to test the temperature of water, before fully submerging their bodies.

Children should also be reminded never to mix water and electricity as this can lead to electrocution. Things like toasters, hair dryers, radios, televisions, lamps, or anything that is plugged into an electrical socket should never be held with wet hands.

It is imperative for children to practice basic swimming and floating techniques so that they don’t panic in the water.

If your child is still learning to swim, make it a firm rule that he/she wears protective water gear, such as flotation armbands or vests, to help keep them afloat in the pool.

7. Steer clear of the medicine cabinet Parents should always ensure that all medication is stored in a lockable cabinet and is not within easy reach of children. Any type of medication, including those intended for children, can be dangerous for children if ingested in large quantities. Young children should always be warned never to take any medication that has not been given to them by their parent or a trusted adult.

For older children who are capable of taking their own medicine, it is still advisable for parents to supervise them to ensure that the correct dosage is consumed.

6. Be aware of food allergies If your child is allergic to any food group, it is crucial that you teach them the importance of understanding what it means to have a food allergy and how to stay safe.

Through clear communication, you can help your child understand the difference between “safe” and “unsafe” foods as well the dangers of consuming foods which affect their well-being.

9. Don’t play with fire While most children are wary of fire and understand the dangers of it, others are often curious and try to experiment with matches or gas lighters found around the house. It’s important for parents to warn their children that it is never acceptable to play with fire, even if an adult is present at home.

8. Avoid climbing on the furniture Children do not think about furniture as being something that could harm them. However, heavy items which aren’t mounted to a wall, like an unsteady television set or bookshelf, can cause serious injury to a child if climbed on. For this reason, parents should be stern in their ruling and ensure that all furniture around the house is a no-go zone for children.

Security is a vital factor LOOKING for a new home can be exciting, but security is very important to keep in mind — from the safety of the neighbourhood to how well-protected the property you are interested in is.

There are some rules to follow when it comes to considering the security of a neighbourhood and home, says Fidelity ADT district manager Ivan Govender­.

GET TO KNOW THE NEIGHBOURHOOD Do some research about your prospective new suburb — local estate agents should be able to offer some insights into crime trends and its overall safety. The SAPS website is also a good source of information about crime statistics. “Is there a neighbourhood watch or community security scheme, and are there regular security patrols?” said Govender.

A LAYERED APPROACH TO ASSESS SECURITY Govender recommends taking a layered approach — working from the outside, in — to evaluate what measures are in place. From the

boundary, make sure that there is nothing that could help a burglar get into the property easily.

Also trim back any low-hanging tree branches that could be used to gain entry. “Keep an eye out for anything that could be used as a weapon, or to gain entry to the home.” Then head indoors and do a similar check. Look at the state of hinges and locks on windows, gates and doors. Also pay attention to the burglar bars.

CHECK OUT THE SECURITY SYSTEM If the property you are interested in already has an alarm system installed, find out if it is still linked to a security company and, if so, which services the property does or does not subscribe to.

MEET THE NEIGHBOURS Once you’re settled in, head next door to meet the neighbours.They are often the first to notice when something is wrong or out of place. “When residents, police and private security companies work together to curb crime, we see positive results,” he said. — Supplied.

Keeping children safe in the water AS PART of Ushaka’s water safety programme, Swimanathi, the KZN Water Safety and Learn to Swim Programme launch took place recently at Sea Animal Encounter Island.

XERCISING is not for everyone, even though everyone knows they should be doing it. But, when you make it your New Year’s resolution again, maybe it is time that you try something different to motivate you to get up off your couch.

How about creating an exercise routine not only for you, but for you and your fur baby, and doing it together?

ITH the aim of keeping children away from social ills by offering a different outlet for their energies, Mmeli Ndimande­ and Patrick Canhem founded the Inanda Trail Running Club.

The club was started with a mission to help the young children in the community to get involved with sports so that they did not get themselves in trouble by participating in illegal activities, such as taking drugs and other criminal acts.

Speaking of the club’s formation, Ndimande said they’d witnessed how socials-ills can take over a community and they didn’t want the new generation to end up like the older ones, who’ve taken to a life of crime.

“We want children to see that there are things that they could do besides crime,” he said.

Canhem added that children have a bright future ahead of them, which is what encouraged

them to start this club and offer them some help.

“We don’t have much, because we are an NPO, and we get ahead by raising funds and donations.

“It brings us so much joy when we see these children’s dedication towards their future,” he said.

The founders said that they have 25 children who are registered to the club and they are helping to nurture their talents in sports.

To continue the sterling work they are doing for these children, the Inanda Trail Running Club will be hosting The Isikhwehle Trail Run on Sunday, February 24 at the Baynesfield MTB and Recreational Club. The run offers three distances — a 17km and 10km for those keen to blast through the beautiful Baynesfield Estate, and a 5km fun run/walk for families or the more relaxed athlete.

This run will enable the duo to raise funds and promote the work they are doing for their community.

It was business as usual for Euro Steel/Fenn Kayaks’ Hank McGregor as he took his second win of the 2019 Marine Series at the Borland Surfski Challenge, presented

by Marriot, on Friday evening.

McGregor and Purchase surge to victory at Marine race three WITH brilliant conditions the order of the day, world-beater Hank McGregor and young starlet Kyeta Purchase took home top honours at the Borland Surfski Challenge, presented by Marriot, race three of the 2019 Marine Surfski Series, on Friday.

With last week’s race two having to be cancelled due to strong winds, Friday’s race three conditions were as good as they get, with some good bumps for paddlers heading to the turn and the southerly wind that was blowing meant it was a great evening on the water.

At the sharp end of the race, Marine Series king Hank McGregor once again proved that he is one of the best in the world with his second win in as many races, 18 seconds ahead of Matt Bouman­ in second and Capetonian Mark Keeling­in third.

“We were a little worried about conditions beforehand but everything seemed to turn at the last minute and we had some brilliant conditions,” Euro Steel/Fenn Kayaks’ McGregor said.

“I managed to get a jump on the guys at the beginning and hold on to the advantage throughout, which I was really happy about.

“With such a strong field it’s great to get another win here,” said McGregor.

The beginning of the year often means that McGregor is experimenting with equipment and he used Friday’s race to test out a new surfski.

“It’s great to use the Marine Series as a place to test out new kit because the racing and the competitors are so consistent so you get a good idea if the equipment is right for you.

“I was very happy with the outcome of the test-

ing and I just want to say well done to Barry (Lewin­) on another great race!” he said.

The ladies race was where all the drama unfolded with Euro Steel/Fenn Kayaks’ Jenna Ward holding all the cards coming into the finish, however a meeting with the sharks nets derailed her quest for a second win of the season.

Her mishap opened the door for Purchase and Michelle Burn to fight it out for the win.

With an exciting end sprint on the cards, it was the younger Purchase who came away with her first win of the series, eight seconds ahead of Burn in second while Ward came home in third.

The river racing dream team of Owen Gandar and Andrew Houston showed they are no mugs in the ocean as they finished third overall and first double with the second double of Lance Howarth and Shaun Burgin just under two minutes behind.

Maritzburg College’s Hamish Mackenzie was the first junior boat home ninth overall and seventh single.

In the short course, Simon and Chris Grolt were the first boat home ahead of Zoog and Lia Hayns with Bruce and Sarah-Anne PenderSmith in third.

U16 paddler Lungelo Shange was the first single home on the short course.

Brendon Germaine was the first stand-up paddle boarder over the line.
