Women to empower and enrich one another PHINDILE SHOZI >>Phindile.Shozi@media24.com WHEN Upper Highway resident Irena Skibinski lost her husband to suicide she was devastated — she beat herself up questioning his decision.

Life for Skibinski felt as though it was on a downward spiral as she felt that she had nowhere to go and no one to talk to.

“My husband drowned himself in the Duzi and I was literally homeless because my son threw me out of his house after my husband’s suicide,” she said.

Even though she did have a flat she said that she couldn’t stay there. Luckily, her friend offered her a place to stay.

“I stayed with her until I bought my own place,” she said.

Eventually, Skibinski started getting back on her feet. At this time she joined a women’s empowerment group to help her understand herself better, as well as learn skills to develop herself.

“I joined the Women’s Institute.

This organisation has played a unique role in providing women with educational opportunities, the chance to build new skills, take part in a wide variety of activities and campaign on issues that matter to them and their communities,” she said.

“I qualified to be a member in 2015 where I was affiliated to the Agriculture Women’s Union. I also qualified as a judge for crochet, embroidery and other things which are hand-made,” said Skibinski.

Skibinski, who’s also a volunteer at the Hillcrest Aids Centre and Trust, said that now she is teaching ladies embroidery, cooking, crochet and whatever they want to do.

“With the trauma I went through, I chose to keep myself busy by helping those in need and I live by our motto which states that one should empower and enrich other women to be greater,” she stated.

In conclusion, she said that women should not let their current situation get them down but rather get up and do something which will help them release their pain and traumatic thoughts, saying: “Let us stand up and be proud of who we are. Everyone is unique in their own way, we should always lend a helping hand to others.” she concluded.

“Having an attractive verge enhances the appearance and value of an area and everyone would love to live in an area that looks nice,” said Candotti.

He stated that the project is going to be of help to the conservancy as it encourages residents to use indigenous plants. These indigenous verges will help to improve the sustainability of the indigenous species.

“It will also create micro-habitats for insects, reptiles and small mammals,” he said.

Candotti reiterated that the competition is open to all residents and businesses, saying: “Any resident, school, organisation, or business that has a verge can enter this competition.”

In conclusion, his message to the Kloof Conservancy supporters regarding the verges was that they should be good citizens and help improve the environment that they live in.

“It’s a small effort with great returns,” Candotti said.

TIME is the most essential thing you can offer to people who are in need of it, this according to hypnotherapist Petra Nicol who offers her services to her community without even a second thought.

“For me, it’s very much about empowerment and helping someone to rise from being a victim to being empowered,” she said.

From her side of things, Nicol said she’s had stages in her life where she has felt like a victim, and she knows the powerlessness, hopelessness and helplessness that goes with that.

“The way the world is right now, there are far too many good people standing by and too few people stepping up to the plate to assist — something that can make such a big difference to so many,” said Nicol.

She said trying to make a change in this world is one of the reasons she gives some of her time to helping the people from her community.

Nicol volunteers her time to the community by counselling them in times of crisis, usually in response to situations being responded to by members of the SA Community Crime Watch (SACCW).

“It’s about giving back to the community, so if I have the resources available, I am able to make a difference in someone’s life by offering them the benefit of my skills where possible,” she said.

“While we cannot have everyone responding to every crisis out there, it’s important to be part of a co-ordinated effort, assisting with the resources you have available to you.

HE number of rapes and murders is increasing daily in South Africa, with an estimated 110 children raped and 49 killed daily in the country.

These shocking revelations emerged during the murder trial of a seven-year-old child who was raped and murdered in Waterloo. Captain Bonginkosi Zulu, while testifying in court, said that the statistics in the country reveal that children are becoming soft targets for criminals.

South African Community Crime Watch founder Steven King said rape, abuse and murder has become an unfortunate reality in the country. “The level of incidents as quoted by SA Statistics is shocking to say the least and it must surely put pressure on government to institute more serious punishments,” said King.

He said that they cannot be silent on this issue as it affects old, young, black, white men and women, “There has to be a serious change in law which will render life sentences to those cases where rape was proven beyond doubt.”

Further he said that date rape is still a huge problem amongst teens, who see it as challenge, and that must be stopped by the full might of the law.

In conclusion he said if the culprit can’t do time in jail then they mustn’t commit crime: “You will be caught and you will be punished.”

“Ladies, listen to your intuition when alone.

Although you can never fully protect yourself from potential sexual assault, it’s important that you avoid dangerous situations. Reduce risk in social situations,” said King.

SABC inquiry a vital process REBECCA SIBANDA AT the end of May, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) board announced the establishment of a commission of inquiry into editorial interference at the public broadcaster.

The inquiry was established in response to various reports of editorial interference over the years and will deal with complaints concerning conduct between 2012 and 2018.

The inquiry is part of the ongoing work to transform the SABC into an accountable and responsive public institution, following tumultuous years plagued with unconstitutional editorial policies and looting at an astronomical level.

The Terms of Reference of the inquiry acknowledge that the interference could be commercial, political or otherwise driven.

They further state that the commission will make recommendations that will lend guidance to the SABC regarding how to address any future interference. Corrective measures, such as disciplinary action where misconduct has been established, are also on the table.

Hlaudi Motsoeneng has long left the SABC but the effects of his disastrous poli-

cies and decisions are still rippling through the halls of the public broadcaster. The SABC owes 64 companies at least R100 million for services. A summary of the losses suffered in both revenue and audience indicates that the bulk of these losses can be linked directly to political interference in editorial decisions during Motsoeneng’s tenure.

In addition to the financial woes, political parties allege that there has been a discernible bias towards the governing party and are demanding equitable coverage, particularly during election time.

Impartiality on the part of the SABC is important because viewers deserve adequate and accurate information about all political parties on issues that affect them, particularly as voters, in the run-up to elections.

The SABC is the primary broadcaster and has the widest reach via both television and radio. As such, it has an obligation to be free from political bias and interference from any source.

When the inquiry was established, all the hearings were intended to be conducted incamera, i.e. in private, effectively preventing the media and the public from accessing the information shared. This is problematic be-

cause, as the public broadcaster, any functions and processes concerning its inner workings must be publicly available. This exclusion was challenged in the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg by Media Monitoring Africa and the SOS Support Public Broadcasting Coalition. The organisations cited editorial independence at the SABC being a matter of public interest. They argued that the SABC has an obligation to function fairly and objectively, in the interest of the millions of South Africans who depend on it for information.

An out-of-court settlement was reached whereby whistle-blowers will remain protected, but the most pertinent parts will remain available to the media and the general public.

The settlement is a welcome compromise on the part of the SABC. With the media hailed as the fourth estate in defending our constitutional democracy, it comes as no surprise that there is such fierce action to protect the independence of the SABC. The media has been instrumental in the exposure of rampant corruption and myriad human rights violations, and any threat to it must be extinguished expedi-

tiously.

The appointment of a new board, a new chief operating officer — Chris Maroleng — together with chief executive officer Madoda Mxakwe and chief financial officer Yolande van Biljon, all with impressive credentials, are notable changes made to top management.

Despite these changes, the national Treasury remains reluctant to offer a bailout until the SABC proves its stability. Furthermore, while the SABC has been engaged in ongoing transformation and the establishment of the inquiry is another positive step, whether the recommendations made by the commission will be implemented and contribute to any real change remains to be seen.

While there is a sense of fatigue among the public regarding the efficacy of, and need for, commissions of inquiry, it is still necessary that the work of the SABC inquiry continue.

It is vital for the SABC as a public broadcaster to woo the South African public and reassure the nation of its place in a society based on accountability, responsiveness and openness.

Reforming a violent society CRIMINALS in South Africa are not content to simply rob, but also to brutally maim or murder the victim. This indicates that criminals are not only motivated by the proceeds of crime, they also need to satisfy violent and murderous inclinations.

We must therefore reflect on how this violent disposition is cultivated in our society.

Education and schools function to develop the capacities and attitudes of people for harmonious living in a society, exceeding excellence in math, chemistry, literature etc.

By this standard, our education system has failed. Our schools’ curricula ignore meaningful instruction in peaceful coexistence, conflict resolution and opportunities for genuine personal contentment.

For example, do we prepare our pupils to become resilient to the enticements of criminal gangs and the drug culture? Should parental education not be taught in secondary schools in preparation for later roles?

We need to reform our curriculum urgently to address the challenges in the reality of South Africa. Teachers need to put away the textbooks and design relevant learning tasks that require pupils to explore their country and community to find out how things are done; how jobs are cre-

ated; the indicators of justice and oppression, and the hidden agendas that often underlie public decisions. They must learn to become outspoken critics of wrongdoing.

Another agent of this is the impact of the operations of public institutions on the people. When members of the State apparatus use their power to marginalise the poor and disadvantaged, resentment results, leading to increased criminal activity.

When elected leaders ignore the needs of the poor and money is spent on useless projects to appease a few, you develop a setting for crime.

The Police Service is another powerful agent of this. When police fail to prosecute those who break the law, people realize there are no consequences for lawlessness and become blatant.

For example, vendors have taken over the pavements. Players of loud music from taxis invade the peace of the citizens for fun. Pirated materials are openly sold on the pavements. Every main road has become a taxi stand.

The authorities and the police must strive to create an environment of order by addressing even the smallest of violations, so that more horrible crimes will become out of place.

The exclusion of millions from the draft Assam citizenship list is a humanitarian crisis THE exclusion of 4 million people from the draft Assam citizenship list represents a humanitarian problem of enormous proportions. The future of these potential stateless people hangs in the balance. Stripped of citizenship, they will become vulnerable and face threats to their lives, lands and livelihoods.

For those who have been living in a place for generations, the prospect of being sent to detention camps or being deported is hard to think of.

Poor, illiterate residents were asked to produce pre-1971 documents as proof of citizenship.

Strangely, even those who were in possession of Aadhaar and passport were left out of the na-

tional register of citizens.

They face the risk that they will be discarded as stateless persons within Assam — their home for years, if not decades or generations. AST week’s resignation of board chairman of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), former CEO of First Rand Limited Sizwe Nxasana, further illustrated the dire situation the scheme currently faces.

Higher Education and Training Minister Naledi Pandor called a meeting where she spoke about her concerns regarding issues faced by the NSFAS, saying that an administrator will be appointed to take over administration and management of the scheme.

Speaking on Ukhozi FM, department spokesperson Lunga Ngqengelele said the current board will be dissolved once the minister has hired an administrator.

He said all this is going to be done because there are still students who haven’t received their money since 2017.

“The minister has serious concerns about the delay in payments so we are now in the process of appointing an administrator.

“We are not sure when the appointment will be made, but once the administrator is in place, the board will be dissolved.

“The administrator will take over the management, administration and the run-

ning of NSFAS,” said Ngqengelele.

He went on to say that the board will be totally dissolved, not because they failed to do their job but due to the pressure that they were faced with.

A student at the University of South Africa questioned where this sudden change of heart was coming from.

“All they do is talk with no action because we have protested numerous times for the board to be dissolved as it wasn’t doing anything.

“Now they want to hire an administrator whom we don’t know — what change it is going to bring us,” he asked.

The student, who asked to remain anonymous, said that they didn’t even determine when the administrator will be hired which shows that they don’t yet have a solid plan in place.

“There are still students who haven’t received their funds from 2017, and 2018 is coming to end in few months, but they haven’t established when the administrator will be hired,” he said.

To conclude he said it doesn’t matter that many students have received their funds this year because, to them, if even one student hasn’t received their funds then it is a problem.

PS (Phindile Shozi): What does the name Mongols mean?

Mongols (Pound): Well, Mongols were the most feared warriors in the 13th century, which made them the conquerors and greatest from that particular time. We’ve faced many challenges as undergrounds, where people have taken us for granted — sometimes they don’t pay us when we’ve performed at their events. Even though we surpassed all of that, we thought of a name that will match our strengths. We saw the name Mongols befitting us as we saw ourselves as warriors who’ve defeated our opponents.

PS: What are some of the other challenges that you’ve come across?

Mongols (Riich): The entertainment industry, especially music, is a hard career to take. People have taken credit for our work and when you’re an underground artist they don’t take you seriously. It’s not them only though because even in our own homes they didn’t believe in us as they believed that music is just a hobby and not something to take as a career.

PS: What inspired your single Amagalan?

Mongols (London Light): With everything we’d been through, we finally saw the light of being recognised and we were so full of joy (which is the title of the song), happiness and we wanted to express that in our single. Amagalan is a happy feeling of anything. All our music is influenced by the things that are happening around us.

PS: Is Amagalan your first single?

Mongols (Riich): No, we had other songs that we’ve released before but, due to not being recognised and everything, they are not known to the

public. Amagalan is the first single to be actually heard all over the country.

PS: Are you planning on releasing an album anytime soon?

Mongols (Pound): No, we don’t want to rush things as we just got our big break. Rather, we are still going to be releasing singles so that people can get to know us better and dance more.

PS: What is your message to young people out there?

Mongols (Riich): If they still have the chance to go to school then they should use it wisely because it’s rough out there and they shouldn’t just rely on music as a career — they should have something to fall back on if it doesn’t go as planned in the industry.

Mongols (Pound): Those who want to pursue a career in the entertainment industry should be ready mentally and physically because it can turn you into something you really don’t know if you’re too weak.

IX girls from different walks of life will join forces to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in a bid to raise funds for LIV Village, a foster care village for orphaned and vulnerable children.

Girls’ High School pupils Joelle Botha, Rutendo Gora, Julie Moreno, Maria Diedrick, Taylan Mor-

net and Masibonge Ngcobo said they see the challenge of this climb as their way of overcoming the obstacles in the lives of the kids at LIV Village.

“It’s our way of giving back, of being the light and inspiration to those who face struggles on a daily basis,” they said.

The girl’s spokesperson, Heidi Cowie, highlighted that it all started with Joelle’s desire to empower others with hope, to fulfil a dream and to

help others, saying: “She wanted to see the lives of the children at LIV Village changed for the better.

She also has a desire to see individuals dare to dream and to believe that all things are possible.”

Cowie said that the girls are raising funds to cover their travel expenses, climbing gear, tips for porters as well as other expenses.

“They are raising all these funds in addition to the fund raising for LIV Village, which will always

be the main focus of the project,” she said.

In conclusion, the girls said that they feel that it’s important to be able to dream and follow that dream until the end. “We want to show others that, with the right motivation and support, you can do anything you put your heart to,” said the girls.

Rentokil urges the public to ask the following questions when choosing a professional pest control partner 1. How many years has the pest control company been in business?

2. How are employees trained?

3. Is the company registered with the South African Pest Control Association (Sapca)?

Pluke says that while do-it-yourself pest control options may seem appealing, one must remember that, if administered incorrectly, pesticides can be hazardous to the health of humans as they are designed to kill living organisms.

“It is therefore essential that the use of pesticides around people, especially small children, is carefully controlled.

“When selecting a pest control partner, consumers are urged to choose a reputable, professional pest control company,” he said.

Pluke provides DIY green pest control remedies 1. Cucumber peels — ants are quite turned off by cucumber peels, and sprinkling them around areas of your home that serve as entrance points for ant colonies is a great preventive pest control method.

2. Mint leaves — plants such as peppermint and spearmint are natural insect deterrents, especially for ants and aphids.

Plant a few varieties around your home, and you should see a noticeable drop in ant populations.

3. All-natural sprays — there are a number of great eco-friendly pest control sprays you can make at home.

Mixing water with isopropyl alcohol, concentrated garlic oil, salt or boiled elder leaves makes deterrents that you can spray on indoor and outdoor plants to help control infestations.

4. Baking soda and powdered sugar — if roaches are your problem, try mixing baking soda and powdered sugar and sprinkle it around problem areas. The sugar attracts the pests and the baking soda kills them.

5. Eucalyptus oil — drop a bit of eucalyptus oil on a cloth and place it near areas of infestation of flies and moths.

6. Soapy water — if you want to instantly kill an insect in your home, mix water and soap into a spray bottle — you can kill all bugs on contact. This is because the soap component breaks down the waxy exoskeleton and lets the water enter the bug, killing them quickly.

7. Cedar oil — cedar oil is very lethal to termites but totally non-toxic, organic, and chemicalfree.

It is a very effective contact killer and repellent to termites, and can be used on any wood structure.

The way it works is that the product penetrates the wood, and the aromas from the cedar oil disrupt termite pheromone systems in a lethal manner.

8. Lemon juice as bug spray — simply add lemon juice and water 50/50 in a spray bottle and add essential oils.

Once they find a source of food and water, they are notorious for overstaying their welcome and inviting their friends and family. While pests can thrive in even the cleanest of houses, homeowners should remove any temptations by sweeping up spills and crumbs immediately to prevent vermin, roaches or ants from being attracted to the area.

3. Good housekeeping practices — clear up clutter in your yard Ensure you do not have any clutter such as building rubble, stacks of firewood, old tyres or other debris leaning against your exterior walls around your home or in your garden against perimeter walls.

“We do not recommend the use of a compost heap as they provide ideal breeding grounds for rodents and flies. Keep your gutters clean and remove any dead leaves to prevent them being blocked as this will retain stagnant water and can cause fly and mosquito problems,” said Steele.

4. Know when to call in the professionals The tips given above are great do-it-yourself

methods available to prevent pest control issues in your home. “Waiting until it is too late to call in a certified professional can be dangerous and can lead to major damage, costing you time and money,” he said.

What to expect when pest control specialists come to your home 1. Pre-service If applicable, prior to the day of service, you should be informed of any preparation you may have to do to enable service to be performed. This could include clearing specified areas, removing pets, storing or covering foods and planning to keep children out of the area during service.

2. Pre-service communication Before beginning service, the technician should discuss the situation with you. It can be beneficial to walk around the home or property with the technician to show them what was seen, and where. The technician should then communicate the treatment to be made and products to be used.

3. Inspection and identification The service professional should then conduct an inspection for the pests and signs of pest presence. He or she should inspect the sites you discussed and other areas where pests are likely to be, and look for any potential contributing or conducive conditions. The inspection should also include positive identification of the pest in order for correct treatment to be made.

4. Treatment Once treatment has been made, the technician should again communicate with you, telling you what has been done; where, why, and how.

The technician should note any precautions you may need to take, answer any further questions you may have, and make recommendations for any action you need to take and follow up they will make.

5. Service report

The service technician should provide you with a written service report, noting what was done where, when, how and why. It should also include contact information and any recommendations.

6. Follow up, if needed For some pests, such as bed bugs, elimination cannot be achieved in a single visit, therefore you should be informed of any further service that will be needed and any other follow-up that is required or recommended.

ACK of proper parent-child relationships in society is what drove Joey Du Plessis of the Careline Crisis and Trauma Centre to step in and start offering group meetings to help encourage parents to have open communication lines with their chil-

dren.

“At the Careline Centre, we noticed that parents were having problems in communicating with their children, who weren’t listening to them and who were behaving in unacceptable ways. However, in turn, the children complained that they get shouted at and that they were misunderstood.

That’s when I decided to start helping

them develop an understanding with each other,” she explained.

Du Plessis offers meetings where parents come in with their children to try to resolve the issues they have.

“I established a Code of Conduct which I offer to them to follow. With it they’ll be able to communicate much better and have a better understanding of each other,” she said.

The Code of Conduct that Du Plessis set out for the parents and children included things like don’t shout, scream, complain, nag, breakdown, swear, be aggressive, destroy or damage things, ignore the other person, and no body language and silent treatment. “With this code of conduct, they are able to rebuild their relations and be able to communicate with one another without any hassle,” said Du Plessis.

She added that the code of conduct also includes not saying negative things towards one another because that kills the self-esteem of the person.

“Treating someone the way you want them to treat you is also a factor and respect goes a long way but I also encourage them to have fun.”

A parent who asked to remain anonymous said Du Plessis’ meetings really helped

with her daughter, who had an anger problem.

“We didn’t know what to do anymore so I turned to [Joey] for help. She told me to bring in the whole family so that she could try and get to the bottom of the problem as soon as possible,” explained the mother.

After she brought in the whole family, her daughter laid out her heart regarding why she was always angry and they were able to know where they could set boundaries in accommodating her.

According to consulting hypnotherapist Petra Nicol, occasional anxiety is normal for most people. However, people with AD frequently have intense, excessive and persistent worries and fears about everyday situations.

“For some, anxiety disorders involve repeated episodes of unexpected feelings of intense anxiety and fear, terror that can reach a peak within minutes, known as panic at-

tacks, which are sometimes so severe that the person fears that they are having a heart attack,” she explained.

“These feelings of anxiety and panic can severely interfere with daily life and can be difficult to control.

They are usually out of proportion to the actual problem or danger. It may lead to the person avoiding certain places, even situations to try to prevent this feeling of loss of control,” she further explained.

She added that it may stop a person from continuing to do the things they used to enjoy, even those tasks that the person is required to do for work, which also leads to a poor quality of life. Frequent panic attacks

can also cause a person to fear the anxiety attacks themselves, thus increasing the anxiety: “The constant state of stress can even lead to clinical depression. It’s quite common to experience a combination of the two.”

“Whichever form of anxiety you have, there is hope. You just have to be able to recognise that you need help, and then seek it because you are worth it,” she said.

ABIES is one of the deadliest diseases affecting animals, according to Dr Nicky Evans, a veterinarian at Inanda Veterinary Hospital.

“There is currently a massive rabies outbreak and unvaccinated pets or pets whose vaccinations have lapsed are at risk. This places the people around them at risk as well. Once a person or animal is infected with rabies and starts to show symptoms, they will die. It is an absolute tragedy that people are dying of a completely preventable disease. This is why we advise pet owners to vaccinate their pets to protect both their pets and themselves from this deadly disease, “said Dr Evans “People need to take rabies seriously as it is a disease that is almost 100% fatal. Rabies is completely preventable by having your pets vaccinated by a registered vet or animal welfare assistant trained in the handling, storage and administration of vaccines.

“A certificate will then be provided which will serve as proof of vaccination should that animal bite or scratch someone, or come into contact with a rabid animal. If your pet is not vaccinated against rabies and it comes into contact with a rabid animal, the State Vet will likely order immediate euthanasia of your pet as rabies is a controlled disease in South Africa,” advised Dr Evans.

She also stated that pet owners cannot only rely on free rabies vaccination campaigns to get their pets vaccinated. “It is a legal requirement in South Africa that all dogs and cats are vaccinated against rabies and it is solely the pet owner’s responsibility to comply with this law. The State Vet is already under enormous pressure to provide service to the whole of Kwazulu-Natal.

Do not delay in vaccinating your pets while you wait for the next free rabies campaign — people with their own transport should make arrangements to vaccinate their pets at their local vet or SPCA and not rely on State services,” she said.

“Rabies is a deadly but preventable disease.

Please vaccinate your pets,” said Dr Evans.

2. Get to a doctor or hospital for a course of four vaccinations AS SOON AS POSSIBLE (post-exposure prophylaxis or PEP). Do not let a clinic turn you away — insist on speaking to someone that can advise you about vaccination. If the clinic does not have vaccine, ask them to find out the nearest one that does have it. You have a right to call an ambulance if you need transport.

3. PEP is virtually 100% effective in preventing people contracting rabies provided it is started as soon as possible after the bite or scratch.

Does life begin at 40?

GETTING older is no joke but Riaad Moosa has managed to find the lighter side of things in his hilarious one-man show, Life Begins!

The fans have spoken and Life Begins returns to Durban by popular demand on October 12 and October 13 at Sibaya Casino.

Following sell-out shows around the country, Moosa continues to entertain audiences as he tries to figure out whether life really does begin after the big 4-0! The show is a snapshot into his life after turning 40 and how he has to juggle being a father of four children, a husband, a comedian and an actor, all while taking in the current cultural and political climates around us.

“Even though I am now 40, in many ways I feel like I’m still crawling and I’m looking back at my journey from being an aspirational doctor, coming from a relatively conservative Muslim background where both my parents were doctors, and how I actually journeyed to becoming a stand-up comedian,” said Moosa.

PPER Highway resident Phakamani Mkhize is passionate about soccer and wants to impact the lives of young people across his neighbourhood by developing their soccer skills.

Mkhize said he has always loved coaching, especially children, but he couldn’t previously pursue any studies involving it as he already was already studying Information Technology (IT). However, in his last year of studying IT, Mkhize said that he approached founder of Yenzanathi Project (an NPO the helps children) Lydia Hlophe to ask her if he could help teach children soccer as he wasn’t qualified to be a coach at that time.

“Since childhood, I was a very sporty person and I just love working with children, which is why I approached Mam Hlophe because I knew that she works with them too, and she agreed,” he said.

“Helping to teach the children soccer made

me fall more in love with coaching but, due to my circumstances, I couldn’t fulfill my wish to do the coaching course,” he explained.

In 2017, Mkhize said an opportunity finally presented itself through the Yenzanathi Project and he grabbed it with both hands.

“Premier Skills, in partnership with the South African Football Association (SAFA), offered a coaching course to people who wanted to be coaches,” he said.

Mkhize obtained his certificate of coaching and coach educator in April of 2017.

“I’m really grateful to Yenzanathi Project because I wouldn’t be a qualified coach if it wasn’t for them. I give all the credit to the Yenzanathi Project for making my wish a reality,” said Mkhize.

The Cows Comrades heroes hailed THE Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa (CHOC) fundraisers, The Cows, are bringing down the curtain on a record breaking fundraising effort at the recent Comrades Marathon, recognising the runners that helped push the total raised to R1.67 million.

Capetonian Cow Axel Ritterhaus single-handedly raised almost R80 000 for CHOC, with the top ten all managing to raise in excess of R20 000 each.

While many are familiar local runners, it was the name of Australian athlete Darren Wood who caught many by surprise.

The contribution from his supporters in Australia turned his amount raised into a hefty sum when converted from Australian dollars to Rands, shooting him into the top ten of the overall charity fundraisers list and inspiring him to continue his fundraising for the South African childhood cancer charity.

“A friend of mine in Germany has a four year old son who has mouth cancer for the second time and I managed to raise AUS $36 500 just through work,” Woods said when explaining how his support for childhood cancer charities started.

“At the Comrades, the ‘Durban Daisy’ Iris Varty gave me a furry CHOC Cow suit which I wear while training for the upcoming Melbourne marathon, a race I will run in the suit.

“I get so many toots from cars while running and people stop their cars to take a picture of the cow!” he added.

For another seasoned member of The Cows, Glynis Mauldon, the 2018 Comrades was particularly special. She was running the ultra-marathon in memory of John Stark, a veteran of 33 Comrades marathons who passed away in February.

“The support on the day was phenomenal and The Cows stand at Hillcrest rocked,” said Mauldon, who flew back from England for the race. “Just getting there in time, I felt like I had won and then to have (The Cows founder) Kerrin (Bain) run with me for a short way was very special! I haven’t finished a “down run” since 2012 — funny enough I ran in Cow kit that year. Unfortunately in 2014 I missed cut off at the 45th Cutting, “ she recalls.

“This year I hit a bad patch after Drummond and I knew I had lost too much time, so Plan B was make the cut offs, come hell or high water I was going to cross the finish line for the CHOC kids and for John.

“I just kept repeating to myself ‘pain is temporary, quitting is forever’. I made 45th Cutting by a few minutes and knew I would have to run my heart out to do 9 km in just over an hour.

“Sadly, I got sick at Tollgate, felt awful and then it was walk and run to the finish. Passing Kingsmead in under 12 hours was a tad hard, as it was for many others trying to make the 12 hour cut off.

I soldiered on and fortunately was not pulled off the road and I was able to cross the finish mat in 12 hours and 25 minutes.”

“For me, it was mission accomplished,” she added. “I hadn’t bailed, I had finished for the kids, in memory of those now passed and for John. The records will show another DNF but I completed the distance. No regrets,” said Mauldon.

“My love affair with The Comrades Marathon continues — 23 starts and 13 finishes — clearly I need my head read or I am one stubborn lady as I am sure no one has a record like this.”
