HE concerned community and political parties in Umzimkhulu called for justice for the murder of former ANC Youth League secretary-general and Umzimkhulu Councillor Sindiso Magaqa. This after four suspects appeared at the Umzimkhulu Magistrate’s Court for his murder and two counts of attempted murder on Tuesday, March 19.

Ndobe’a attorney, Larry Seethal, indicated he was ready for a bail application but said pending arrests would cause some delays in the bail application of his client.

The state has confirmed that there are outstanding suspects in the case.

Community forum plans to boycott elections SIPHELELE NKETO >>siphelele@media24.com

POLITICAL parties have been mobilising residents to go out in large numbers to vote, however, members of the Route 56 Matatiele Forum said they will persuade Matatiele residents to boycott the elections on May 8 instead.

At a media briefing held in Matatiele on Tuesday, March 12, the forum said they will visit all villages in Matatiele to ask residents not to vote.

The forum’s leader, Nhlahla Dhlamini, said residents have been voting for better service for years but their lives have not yet changed.

“We have been asking for tar roads on all routes leading to the Lesotho border, but our government has done nothing.

Many communities in Matatiele are depending on streams to get water and taps are dry,” said Dlamini.

Dlamini said that going to the streets to protest for better services will not help so, instead, they will boycott the elections. He believes that, by rejecting the elections, it will force government to address their complaints.

The forum was established in January

2017 as a non-profit organisation to promote the restoration of human dignity and values, to fight for better services and promote unity within Matatiele villages.

The announcement received lots of criticism from political parties. Democratic Alliance (DA) Alfred Nzo regional acting chairperson, Wonga Potwana, did not support the forum’s move, saying it is against the rights of people.

“The members of the forum should organise the community to vote and continue fighting for better services,” said Potwana.

Thobile Mfene of the African National Congress (ANC) in the Alfred Nzo Region said the party has been talking to the members of the forum about the poor state of roads in Matatiele, adding that many roads are receiving attention.

He also noted that, due to heavy rains, the construction of roads is being delayed. “Voting is the right of everyone entitled to vote, members of the forum must change their minds,” he said.

He agreed that many roads in Matatiele are in a bad state, but said that government is addressing the problem.

He said the ANC will organise a meeting with members of the forum.

Church leader faces second count of sexual assault A CHURCH leader from Matatiele was arrested for his alleged involvement in a second sexual assault case.

Local police spokesperson Captain Raphael Motloung confirmed the arrest of the 44-year-old church leader, saying he was arrested by Avondale Police on Monday, March 18.

“The pastor is facing charges of sexual assault at a missionary school in Matatiele. The crime was allegedly com-

mited on November 28, 2018 at the school hostel,” said Motloung.

On March 12, the man was granted bail of R1 000 when he appeared at the Mount Fletcher Magistrate’s Court for a sexual assault charge laid against him by another pupil. He was accused of indecently touching a 19-year-old Grade 11 pupil from a school hostel in Matatiele. Police anticipate more cases to come forward against the man.

>>siphelele@media24.com SIX children who drowned while attempting to cross the Mgxojeni River near the Freyistata village were laid to rest at a mass funeral at Popopo Primary School last Saturday, March 16.

The funeral service was attended by Eastern Cape Province Premier Phumulo Masuale, Matatiele Local Municipality Mayor Momelezi Mbedla, politicians and grieving families.

On March 6, the pupils were allegedly swept away by a flash flood while returning home from school. Eleven of the 17 pupils were rescued by members of the community.

School governing body member Nogcinikhaya Magadla said when she arrived at the scene she stopped three pupils who were trying to cross the flooded river.

“I saw the children crying for help next to the river and the water capacity was high. It was the first time I’ve seen

Mbedla thanked the community for working together during this time of mourning while the premier sent messages of condolences to the families.

“This tragedy has brought us pain

and shock and we never expected it to happen in our area. A bridge will be constructed for the safety of the community and pupils,” said Mbedla.

The six victims were Hlalunathi Mbuleka (8), Sinekhaya Mfolozi (7), Masixole Moleko (6), Sixolile Ndleleni (7), Elomso Ntsimbi (6) and Boitumelo Lebenya (5).

‘Together we can clamp down on crime’ A NUMBER of criminal incidents have been reported in the past weeks. To combat its spread, police called on residents and business owners to work together with the SAPS in order to clamp down on crime.

Police advised businesses to join local police forums to discuss safety threats and measures to end crime.

To reduce risks of rape and sexual offences, residents are warned not to walk alone at night and avoid accepting lifts from strangers.

SAPS spokesperson Captain Dumisani Ncongo said neighbourhood

watch groups need to be established to improve safety and reduce risks of burglaries.

“At home, keys must not be left under doormats or flowerpots because thieves understand where to look for hidden keys.

“Doors must be locked at all times by residents,” said Ncongo.

OTHER SAFETY TIPS THAT NEED TO BE ADHERED TO INCLUDE: • Lights must be on when you go out.

If you go away for a long time, connect lamps to automatic timers so that they

turn on at night and off again during the day.

• Never go alone to withdraw large sums of money.

• Never expose cash at the ATM and avoid carrying large amounts of cash.

• Keep garage doors closed and locked and make the home look occupied to make it difficult for thieves to break in.

• Always be alert before parking a vehicle at home.

N an attempt to promote a greener environment, the Matatiele Local Municipality launched the Good Green Deeds Environmental Awareness Programme on Friday, March 8.

The municipality was responding to the call made by President Cyril Ramaphosa to promote a clean en-

vironment.

Dustbins were handed to Khanya-Naledi School and erected in the streets of Matatiele to help keep the town clean.

N Monday, March 18, Thobani­ May finally received his matric certificate after claiming that he had been requesting it for years.

He said receiving his certificate after so long has restored his hope for a better future.

“I will apply for jobs now with full confidence,” he said.

In the Fever publication on March 15, May appealed for help, saying he completed matric at Shayamoya Secondary School in 2014 but never received a certificate, just a statement of symbols.

He stated that, after applying for jobs and attending several interviews, he was rejected.

“I am so happy to receive this certificate. I was hurt and felt neglected by the world because companies did not wanted to employ me without a matric certificate,” he said with a smile.

A Fever reporter was called to the school on Monday morning to see May’s certificate and other matric certificates that were not collected by pupils.

The school has called on other pupils to collect their certificates in time.

THE deputy minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Sfiso Buthelezi said partnership between government and the business sector plays a big role in economic growth. He was speaking at a business engagement session hosted by the Department of Trade and Industry and the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs in Harding.

The two-day event began on Thursday, March 14, where a number of projects were visited. There was a handover of school uniforms to pupils of Salem Primary School, the opening of the central business district market stalls in Harding, and equipment was handed over to small traders.

On Friday, a community imbizo was held where residents interacted with government leaders at the KwaMachi village.

Buthelezi called for businesses to address challenges facing South Africa, adding that a partnership between businesses and government could possibly contribute to economic growth.

“It is important to support entrepreneurs and create more market access to grow businesses and create job opportunities,” he said.

Deputy Minister of Small Business Development Cassel Mathale appealed to government officials to engage communities, while MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs Sihle Zikalala urged Harding businesses to stand up and access pro-

Firefighters begin bright future T

HE Working on Fire programme has played a major role in restoring the lives of young people by providing new skills, discipline and confidence for a better future.

More than 12 firefighters in the Eastern Cape have left the programme to start new jobs after gaining valuable skills from the programme.

One of the former firefighters, Siyabulele Mraushe from Matatiele, is now working for SAPS and he thanked Working on Fire for all the skills provided to him.

“The Working on Fire programme has empowered me with many skills which helped me to gain new job opportunities.

“Prior to joining the Working on Fire programme, I worked as a merchandiser in the Western Cape Province for three years and finding a permanent job was a challenge,” Mraushe said, adding that hard work and self-motivation assisted him in grasping this new opportunity.

Another former firefighter, Asanda Nkasa from Elliot, who also received another opportunity from SAPS thanked the Working on Fire programme.

JOB HUNTING SKILLS WORKSHOP

Greater Kokstad Municipality, in partnership with the Department of Labour, will be visiting the youth of Ward 2 on Friday, March 22 to capacitate them on how to formulate a curriculum vitae, how to apply online, how to prepare for interviews, and how to register on the jobseekers’ database provided by the department.

Other services will be provided, such as career guidance, workshops on employability skills, and self-presentation. This enables the youth to apply for online posts that are currently available and it also makes it easy for job seekers to apply, especially those that are currently unemployed.

DISCOUNT FOR FARMERS Greater Kokstad Municipal Council took yet another resolution to give a 30% discount to all farmers residing in

Kokstad on their debt against the municipality. The resolution was taken at a special council meeting that was held on March 14. The amnesty applies to debts that are 120 days (four months) and older. Farmers will only pay 70% of their debts and the municipality will write-off the remaining 30%.

This resolution was effective from March 15 and it will come to an end on May 30 (a three-month period). Property owners must take note that the payment must be a once-off payment in order to qualify for the amnesty.

The resolution came as a relief strategy to farmer’s owing the municipality huge amounts as the municipality is continuing to implement its revenue collection policy.

FLASH FLOODS VICTIMS LAID TO REST The six pupils who were swept away by flash floods at Freyistata village in Ward 15 have been buried. The children were walking home from Popopo Primary School on March 6 when tragedy struck.

Eleven other pupils were saved by locals.

Addressing thousands of mourners, Mayor Momelezi Mbedla expressed shock as they never anticipated that something like this would happen, especially since the construction of a bridge is in the pipeline.

“We are really shocked and sad, we never anticipated it. The solution is the construction of a bridge, for which the contractor has already established the site,” he said. Eastern Cape government, led by Premier Phumulo Masualle, attended the moving service

Living on unfulfilled promises Dear Madam At the beginning of December 2018, a lawnmower company failed to keep their booking to mow the lawn. A few months later, after frequent postponements, the company informed the owner of the property that he was “too busy to mow the lawn”. The company provided the contact number of another agency, which quoted an astronomical amount of R2 500, because the grass was “very long”. The house owner, subsisting on a government grant, cannot make this payment. Owing to murder attempts whilst farming, resulting in an injured back and a respiratory problem, recent strokes and brain haemorrhages, he is unable to mow the lawn himself. Disillusioned, he has given up. Since the lawn is an “eyesore”, he cannot place his property on the market.

Another pensioner has, since September 2018, attempted to contact our local municipal manager’s office. Both the manager and personnel are always absent. An e-mail elicited a response, indicating the lack of comprehension by the office. The pensioner was instructed to follow procedures already undertaken and described in her first e-mail. No response was given to a second e-mail. On one occasion she was informed that the municipal manager was out of the country from mid-December 2018 until January 15, so she was asked to leave her contact details. A recent phone call to the

offices and the promises of a return call yielded no result.

Every sectional title unit in KZN is obliged to pay a small stipend each month to obtain the advice of an Ombudsman. After a meeting which instituted the role of the Ombudsman, a pensioner attempted to contact the former, but was informed that “this number does not exist”. A couple, unable to resolve problems in their building, paid a private lawyer for advice and action — to no avail. The problem, which was unresolved for three years, was transferred to the Ombudsman. The result?

The couple received communication from the Ombudsman asking if they wished to terminate the enquiry.

In addition to these unfulfilled promises, recent inhumane and vicious attacks/brutal murders have appalled the public.

The Minister of Police has promised drastic actions against the perpetrators. Owing to the illiteracy and lack of training of the police, lawyers will find “loop holes” in their testimony, enabling these barbarians to walk free. Attempts to elicit e-mails from the Minister of Police are also to no avail. After sending SMS messages to him, his reply was that he “received no emails”.

Popopo Primary School principal Karabo Hantsi fought back tears as he addressed the mourners, saying the school is in shock and mourning after such a tragic loss. The villagers of Freyistata have played a major role in the discovery of all the six bodies.

“We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the community of Freyistata for the unity and dedication they have displayed ever since this incident occurred,” concluded Mbedla.

Premier Masualle passed on words of condolence to the affected families and committed to continue supporting the community. He also said, as government, they will direct a request made by the mayor to be assisted with wattle clearing along the stream where the incident took place.

Festival exposes hidden talent in the local gospel scene SIPHELELE NKETO >>siphelele@media24.com

L

OCAL music was in the spotlight at a Gospel Festival held at Trinity Church and Ministry in Shayamoya on Saturday, March 16.

The fiesta was organised by Babalwa Langa-Mashala, a gospel artist from Kokstad, with the aim of marketing the local music.

Gospel artists like Nolly Fumba, Nozi Mtshutshane, Thabo Lenka, Thabang Mzinyathi, Yamkela Langa and many more entertained at the event, which took place from 10 am until late.

“Local artists lack support from communities, so I hosted the festival to expose hidden talent.

“I want government and municipalities to support local music and invite gospel artists to entertain at events,” said Langa-Mashala.

She said she has always dreamed of hosting a gospel festival to help local artists and she was happy to see it finally come to life.

Meet the woman developing small businesses THERE is a dire need to value women in our society, as more women in leadership will drive the economic change narrative, said media mogul, Khanyi Dhlomo.

In the same spirit, we recognise the woman behind the development of the South Coast’s Small, Medium and Micro-sized Enterprises (SMMEs). The Richmond-born Fatima Sarigat is the centre manager of SmartXchange for the Port Shepstone branch.

SmartXchange is an incubator whose core mandate is to provide enterprise development services to SMMEs in the media, information communication technology and electronics (MICTe) sector.

Sarigat, who has lived in Harding and in Lusaka, Zambia, was an accounting and business studies educator at Port Shepstone Secondary in Albersville before joining the incubator.

Now in her third year of managing the Port Shepstone branch, Sarigat explained what she does at SmartXchange.

“SmartXchange manages a programme that identifies and assists in developing quality skilled MICTe SMME’s in KwaZulu-Natal and also to build a pool of skilled MICTe workers that will enable KZN businesses to flourish.”

She added that SmartXchange partners with

corporates from the MICTe industry, tertiary institutions and the government sector to work towards up-skilling entrepreneurs and the youth.

The centre manager also emphasised that through these partnerships, the incubator is able to contribute towards the creation of sustainable jobs, economic growth and competitiveness in the province.

Since opening their offices in 2016, the incubator is currently managing 22 SMMEs and contributing towards their development.

“We have a few incubatees from the South Coast that are making their mark in the media industry such as Reshma Maharaj of Enspire Magazine, Eric Mbithamkhono of SA Smart Film Art, Nolisha Naicker, Bosani Luthuli and more.”

She concluded that the incubator supports innovation, the youth, black-owned small businesses and initiatives owned by people living with disabilities.

“Any individual who may think they have an excellent business idea within the media industry, that may play a constructive role in boosting the South Coast economy, please come forward.

We will help by offering you support and the use of our facilities. We will also help with seeking funding. We want to see growth, and more growth on the coast,” said Sarigat.

AFTER 18 years of teaching, Sabelo Mzuzu, a teacher from Nomzamo Primary School, has released his sixth music album. The 10-track gospel album, Yiza kuYesu,was released three weeks ago and is available in local music shops.

Mzuzu said he started singing in 1989 and in 2002 he joined Vukani Gospel, a music group in Mount Ayliff. The first album was released in the same year.

He also joined another music group, Christ Vision, and released another album.

After pursuing his passion in music, he released a 12-track solo album entitled Somandla

in 2010 which was welcomed by the community.

“In 2014 I worked with Kutsi Mthanduri from Zimbabwe in producing the Eyam Indlela album, which was also sold in Zimbabwe.

“Music is my calling, and my vision is to send God’s word through music,” said Mzuzu.

When he is not singing, Mzuzu teaches Life Skills and Xhosa to Grade 4 to Grade 6 pupils.

He said during work hours he teaches at the school and in his spare time he prepares music.

“I want pupils and young people in general to take up music as a career. In future, I want to open a recording studio for local artists to record quality music rather than going to other towns for recording,” added Mzuzu.

HE Underberg and Himeville Taxi Association handed over full school uniforms to 130 pupils in Underberg last Thursday, March 14.

The handover ceremony was attended by

Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma Municipality Mayor Ngeneleni Mncwabe and teachers to who all gave their support.

The associations’ secretary, Mbongi Xaba, said every year they raise money to give back to the community by supporting education.

“Many pupils go to school without proper

uniforms so, as the taxi association, we want to change that by donating uniforms. We started this project in 2014 with the support of the local municipality,” Xaba said.

The pupils who received new uniforms came from 26 schools in Underberg and Himeville and their teachers were thankful for the donation.

School celebrates 25th birthday ON March 1, St Monica’s School celebrated its 25th birthday anniversary with a special service in Matatiele.

Former heads of the school including Mrs M King, Mr J Pieterse, and Mr Leon Hiepner attended and gave heartfelt speeches.

There was face painting, jumping castles, sack races, and choir performances as part of the birthday celebrations. Pupils who take tourism a subject displayed their hospitality skills by offering lunch to dignitaries and other stakeholders of the school.

On March 6, the school also marked Ash Wednesday, a day of remembering the early church and forgiveness of God. In preparation for Easter, the church remembers Christ’s forty days in the desert.

School athletes take on tough interschool competition ON March 2, pupils from Bergview Primary School travelled to the South Coast region to play hockey and netball at Scottburgh High School.

The Bergview hockey team achieved a draw against St Patricks and Scottburgh, and

lost 2-0 against Suid Natal School.

On March 6, the U11 Bergview cricket team played against King Edward High School. The Bergview side was unable to beat King Edward’s tally of 46 runs, achieving 39 for a seven run loss.

HE U13 and U14 rugby boys from St Monica’s School played against King Edward High School in a friendly game on March 13. Both teams played well and with courage.

The U16 rugby boys also played well as they faced King Edward High School on the same day. St Monica’s back-line started off well with their defence and played their very best.

Well done to King Edward for taking the win and we are looking forward to our next game in the second term.

azulu FC, known as “Usuthu”.

The foundation’s secretary, Mveli Hloba, said Good Fellas FC footballers usually compete with local teams and they have learnt a lot after playing a national team such as Amazulu FC.

“The foundation wants the rural football talent to gain enough capacity to play at a national level,” said Hloba.

Three friendly games were played by Good Fellas FC and Amazulu FC.

The first game was won by Amazulu FC 3-1 while the other two ended in goalless draws.

Hloba thanked the Umzimkhulu Municipality for supporting Good Fellas FC with transport from Umzimkhulu to Durban.
