Theft of equipment disrupts water supply SIPHELELE NKETO >>siphelele@media24.com

Mixed views on proposed ward demarcation SIPHELELE NKETO

THE theft of water equipment in the area of Alfred Nzo District Municipality is not only costing money at the municipality, but it also affects the supply of water, said the municipal spokesperson, Lixolile Petela, this after a water pump station was seen vandalised in Cedarville last week. Petela said that the municipality is losing la hefty amount of money due to the vandalism of water equipment from across the district, resulting in communities being left without water. Speaking about the recent vandalism of a water pump station in Cedarville, he said that an engine was seen dumped next to the station by water operators and it was suspected that it had not been stolen because it was too heavy. Petela has appealed to residents to report perpetrators, while Pupelo Mohale, the mayoral committee member at the municipality condemned these acts. “The district municipality is being plunged into unnecessary expenditure to maintain these damaged state resources. The lives of innocent people are being put at risk and this is an act of criminality. We urge communities to report perpetrators of these barbaric acts to face justice,” said Mohale. Anyone with information is asked to contact the nearest Alfred Nzo District Municipality offices.

HERE were mixed opinions on the proposed ward delimitation process held in Kokstad City Hall on Tuesday, February 18, by the Municipal Demarcation Board. The Greater Kokstad Municipality will remain as is, with 10 wards, according to the draft delimitation of wards for the next local government elections. Explaining the overview of the programme, one of the delegations from the Municipal Demarcation Board, Liz Mazibuko has said that these public meetings began early this month and this process is to assist the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in preparation of voting stations. Wards are designed to help municipalities and government to deliver services to communities. Mazibuko has urged community structures to present the draft of wards to communities for the residents to express their views on it and submit these to the demarcation board. “If residents are against our ward proposals, they have a right to send their views to us and they have until mid-April. “After the public meetings, the demarcation board will consider all public proposals received and delimit wards,” said Mazibuko, adding that the delimitation of wards will be published in provincial gazettes by May, and anyone with grievances will have 14 days to object, from the day of publication. The demarcation board will then consider all objections and publish its final decisions in provincial gazettes by July and provide final ward boundaries to the IEC in August to start preparing for the 2021 local elections. Municipal Demarcation Board representative Liz Mazibuko speaking at the event. sociation Rudolf Erasmus said that they are not happy with the proposal for the demarcation of wards in Kokstad and they will formally make a submission to the demarcation board. “The proposal does not represent communities that stay in the wards. We want the wards to be restructured,” he said. Other residents said they were unhappy with the Power of Love Church voting station, which was put in Ward 5. There was also a concern about the proposed Ward 9 which consists of the Community Hall voting station, with Kokstad Primary School, Xoloxolo Primary School, Nonkqubela Primary School and the Presbyterian Church. Residents wanted Ward 9 and Ward 6 to be restructured, the latter of which is mainly made up of farm communities.

Pupils injured on their way to school FEVER REPORTER >>siphelele@media24.com MAYOR of the Matatiele Local Municipality, Momelezi Mbedla, has called for the full inspection of vehicles that carry pupils to schools, and he further said that drivers must exercise caution at all times. He said this after nine pupils from Magadla Senior Secondary and Manguzela Senior Primary in Matatiele were discharged from the Taylor Bequest hospital after being involved in an accident while going to school on Monday, February 17. The two pupils who were critically injured were moved to the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in Mthatha for extra medical attention. According to a municipal statement, the ac-

cident took place at Sam Kerk junction along the R56 and it was alleged that the vehicle that was ferrying pupils, from both schools, lost control and overturned, leaving 11 passengers injured, including the driver. “It is truly unfortunate that we are yet again experiencing an occurrence of this nature in Matatiele. We are still trying to recover from a similar misfortune that claimed the lives of three children from Ramafole. Maybe it’s time to re-visit the learner transportation system,” said Mbedla. He emphasised the importance of ensuring that scholar-transportation is thoroughly and regularly checked to ensure road worthiness and that drivers exercise caution at all times. The municipality has thanked the emergency personnel for their rapid response in ensuring that medical attention was given to pupils.

Mother calls for justice in daughters’ rape cases SIPHELELE NKETO >>siphelele@media24.com THE mother of two alleged rape victims in Kokstad is looking for justice to play its role following two incidents of rape, as no arrests have been made yet. The 45-year-old woman told t he Fever that her oldest daughter (21) was raped when she was just 11, and her younger daughter (13) was also raped when she was 11 years old. She said that no one was arrested for the crimes after she reported the cases with the local police station. “My younger daughter confirmed that she was raped several times by a man who is known to her, and a case was opened at the police station but no one was arrested,” she claimed. She further alleged that the man who raped her daughter is walking free and she is suffering from trauma.

The Department of Community Safety and Liaison Harry Gwala District Manager Ncebakazi Tindleni said that after hearing about the rape case of a 13-year-old victim she consulted with the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit of Kokstad. “The case is not with Kokstad Police Station, but with the Kokstad FCS Unit. The Unit Commander was requested to fast track the case, as it appears witness statements were outstanding, hence the case couldn’t be enrolled at court, and the case was reported three months after the incident, therefore no DNA could be obtained, so we had to rely on witnesses,” she said. She further said that statements have been obtained from the mother of the victim and one witness who is allegedly living with the accused. According to Tindleni, the mother of the victim has been provided with feedback accordingly.

HE Griqua community from Rietvlei, uMzimkhulu recently attended a meeting under the leadership of Jakes Fenner who is the chairman for the Griqua community in Rietvlei. The meeting held at Rietvlei Griqua Church on February 1, focused on the Griqua’s who were removed from their land in Rietvlei, and sent to Bishop Lavis in Cape Town to work as labourers on the docks in 1963.

“All their livestock, implements, land, houses and buildings were left behind. At the meeting, people said they wanted to return back to their land in Rietvlei, Cladesale and uMzimkhulu,” said one of the Griqua committee members Margaret Colling, who was present at the meeting. She said that when the Griqua community returned back to their forefathers’ land in Rietvlei some people had

already occupied the land, which resulted in them losing their land. She said that now Griqua communities are scattered all over the country and they want to return back to their land. Those in attendance agreed to approach stakeholders such as Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) and the uMzimkhulu Municipality. The next meeting will be held on March 7

A

PETITION on the scarcity of water in the Harry Gwala District Municipality was sent by members of the Democratic Alliance (DA) to the district municipality on Monday, February 17. The DA Sisonke Constituency Head MP Sibongiseni Ngcobo led the delegation after they said they wanted the municipality to provide water tankers in communities without water or fixed water infrastructure. “The municipality has failed to supply local communities with clean and sufficient water, especially in deep ru-

ral areas like Mangwaneni in Bulwer and St Faith in uMzimkhulu. “There is also poor maintenance of infrastructure which results in water shortage and forces residents to depend on rivers to get water,” said Ngcobo. He added that local businesses have been severely affected as they are sometimes forced to close down. He said the water services department has been faced with ageing water infrastructure and staff shortages, claiming that there are incomplete water projects. He said in Himeville, Underberg, infrastructure is not maintained properly, leaving the community without wa-

ter for more than seven days. In a statement the DA said that the matter was reported to the district Mayor, Zamo Nxumalo, in October last year but nothing has changed. It further said that 64% of residents have access to water, while the remaining 36% are still without water. The DA has threatened to write a complaint to the South African Human Rights Commission to investigate the potential violation of human rights, as access to water is a basic human right. Municipal speaker, Nosisa Jojozi, confirmed that the petition was received and that the municipality “will follow municipal processes before a response is given to the DA.”

THE Department of Health has denied that EG and Usher Memorial Hospital in Kokstad has used its passage as a consulting space for disabled people. This was after Mziwenkosi Kungwana, the deputy secretary of the Mount Currie Disabled Women’s Organisation, claimed that on February 6, disabled people were being attended to in the passage because the hospital failed to provide a consulting room. Kungwana said that he has been working in the hospital for 16 years at the physiotherapy office, assisting disabled people, but on February 6, he got the shock of his life when

he allegedly saw disabled people being serviced in a hospital passage. He said this was a humiliation to the disabled organisation. According to Kungwana, the team was previously using the outpatient department (OPD), and they moved to another room, but on February 6, the team ended up using a passage. “The team is expected to return to the hospital on February 27. I am worried about the dignity of disabled people that is being undermined,” he said. The Harry Gwala Department of Health Assistant Director Communication Silindile Mabaso said that Orthotics visit the hospital regularly and they receive assistance from

the hospital rehabilitation team. “Once a month EG & Usher Memorial Hospital is visited by an Orthotics roving team from Wentworth hospital, and this team is assisted by our hospital rehabilitation team. The roving team is allocated a consultation room at A and B Ward to attend to their clients. The passage next to this ward is used as a waiting area for patients and not as a consulting space,” said Mabaso. The hospital management encouraged clients to utilise hospital complaints mechanisms such as suggestion boxes that are available throughout the hospital or to speak with the nearest operational manager to voice their grievances, concluded Mabaso.

‘ACT for Teen Suicide Prevention’ THE South African Depression and Anxiety Group’s (SADAG) aim for Teen Suicide Prevention Week (February 16 - February 23) is to educate friends, parents, family, loved ones, teachers and communities to #ACT to help prevent teen suicide. An 11-year-old boy fights for his life in Reiger Park after a suicide attempt related to bullying; a 16year-old pupil at a high school in the Vaal attempted to end her life after failing an exam and Grade 11; a pupil from Vereeniging passed away after allegedly drinking poison. The most at-risk age group for suicide is adolescents and suicides are often covered in press stories which highlight the pressing need within this country to ensure that we continue sharing as much information on Teen Suicide Prevention as we possibly can. One teen suicide is one suicide too many. One small act can make a difference and may save a life. #AskCareTreat (ACT) is a call-to-action to encourage early intervention when someone is experiencing difficulty navigating stress or depression or may be at risk of suicide. We want parents, teachers, friends and communities to recognise the risk factors and warning signs that may indicate a potential suicidal crisis, and empower

everyone to know how to #ACT: Ask - Ask directly: “Are you experiencing suicidal thoughts?”, “Have you ever thought of hurting yourself”, “Have you ever felt like you don’t want to live anymore”? Care - Listen without judgment. Show that you care. Treat - Get your child, friend or teen immediate assistance. Escort him or her to the nearest adult, trusted teacher, or mental health professional (GP’s, psychologist, psychiatrist, social worker, church leader, counsellor, etc.) for treatment. Alternatively, call SADAG on 0800 567 567/0800 21 22 23 or sms 31393 for help. “Teen suicides are real and rob many young people of a future and our society of a future. Let us speak about teen suicide today so that we may never have to again in the future,” said clinical psychologist and SADAG board member, Zamo Mbele. SADAG is sharing the #ACT Teen Suicide Prevention Campaign around the country through various activities in the upcoming week: • Online videos by celebrity ambassadors and experts covering suicide prevention, supporting a loved one, symptoms of depression and how to cope.

• “Suicide Shouldn’t be a Secret” teacher and school workshops in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. • Online Expert #FacebookFriday chat on February 21 at 1pm – 2pm and at 7pm – 8pm with clinical psychologist’s, Daniella Matthews and Curwyn Mapaling focusing on the topic of suicide prevention and teen depression. • Online Toolkit for parents, teachers and friends on teen suicide prevention on the homepage of the website (www.sadag.org). If someone, your teen, or friend are feeling hopeless, alone or having recurring thoughts of suicide or death, contact SADAG’s toll-free Suicide Helpline: 0800 567 567 or 0800 21 22 23 providing free telephonic counselling, crisis intervention, information and referrals seven days a week. Or sms 31393 and a counsellor will call back, or visit www.sadag.org. “Take every suicide mention, threat and attempt seriously. People who have attempted suicide before, if left untreated and unmanaged, are at greater risk of attempting or completing a suicide,” said SADAG’s Director Cassey Chambers. — Supplied.

NPO empowers young girls SIPHELELE NKETO >>siphelele@media24.com CHILDREN of the Dawn, a non-profit organisation in Matatiele, has launched a programme called Power Girls in Area C on Saturday, February 15 to empower young girls until they become adults. The NPO was established to take care of vulnerable children from across the country, and now it has started the Power Girls programme to mentor young girls from the age of five years to 15 years. At the programme, the young girls are taught self-love, independence, dangers of teenage pregnancy and the dangers of sugar daddies, and they are coached about life and respect.

The NPO co-ordinator in Matatiele Nandipha Magqashela said that 48 young girls were taken into the programme from the local villages of Matatiele and will remain in the programme for a period of seven years. “We meet the young girls every Saturday for three hours, they receive meals, teachings and do some activities. “The aim is to make them aware of life values, and to remain strong in every challenge they might face when they get older,” said Magqashela. She added that the young girls were separated into two groups, with the first group consisting of 24 girls below the age of 12, and the second group is for 13 years and older. Magqashela said they work closely with local schools and parents of the young girls.

ing market day. Part of the celebrations saw pupils writing Valentine’s messages for their teachers and to take home to their parents.

OCAL pastors and religious leaders have prayed for school discipline, unity, sickness, accidents and deaths at the Bhongweni Youth Centre at a Prayer Day hosted by the Thembalethu Senior Secondary

School last Friday, February 14. The annual prayer was established by the school last year to pray for the end of social troubles affecting the country, said the school principal, Noligwa Magwaza. The theme for this year was: ‘Making our school a safe environment, free from bullying, drugs, infightings, sick-

ness and for effective teaching and learning’. Magwaza said there is harmony in the school, with 790 pupils from Grade 8 to Grade 10. The motivational speaker at the event was Mbambeli Blose from Durban who encouraged pupils to work hard to achieve their best results.

t. Monica’s Pre-School celebrated Valentine’s Day on Friday 14 with pupils dressing in red and white. They also enjoyed a variety of treats. The occasion emphasised the theme of being kind and caring. Grade 1 to Grade 3 pupils expressed a joyful spirit and their contagious

laughter was spread throughout the school as they danced and cheered, while others showed off their outfits by modelling for their teachers and friends. In the senior primary phase classes pupils were entertained with music, dance, fun games and good food. On the same day, certain pupils par-

ticipated in the annual leadership camp at Cedarberg Guest Farm. The camp was meant to encourage teamwork and problem solving skills. Pupils were given a presentation about the principles of leadership as well as what it meant to be a role model. During the presentation pupils had the opportunity to ask questions and

give their opinions on how these principles related to real life situations. They were then divided into three groups and competed against each other in various activities which included physical as well as mental challenges that put their team work skills to the test. At the end of the weekend each team had to create a war cry that symbolised

the types of leaders they would be. The pupil s had a lot of fun and are eager to put what they have learned into practice. The school has thanked the Cedarberg Guest Farm for their help in preparing for the event and every staff member involved in making this weekend such a success.

Help keep the homeless warm this winter SIPHELELE NKETO >>siphelele@media24.com

A

YOUNG man from Kokstad, Thobisani Sibiya, (22) has been helping homeless people with warm clothes and blankets since 2018, and is now appealing for more support to spread the programme to more homeless people this winter. He is working with friends to collect old blankets and clothes from individuals and local busi-

nesses, also driven by the spirit of “ubuntu” and love. He told the Fever that he has already collected 12 blankets but needs more due to the increasing number of homeless residents in Kokstad. “I don’t have the actual number of residents who sleep on the streets because their numbers are growing every day, but I would not mind if I could get at least 20 or more blankets. The aim is to keep them warm and safe,” said Sibiya, who is studying public management at the

Esayidi Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Kokstad campus. He said that he was inspired to start the programme in 2018 because of the trying situation of young and old people who sleep outside in cold weather. Others were even on wheelchairs, and collect their meals from garbage bins. His friends, Oyama Madiya and Luyanda Tilayi also supported his idea of helping the homeless.

Besides donating blankets and clothes, he sometimes gives them food to eat. “After interacting with a number of homeless residents I discovered that some of them were forced to live on the streets because they were rejected by their families, while others left their homes to look for work and ended up sleeping on the streets because they could hardly make ends meet,” he said. To donate, contact Sibiya on 062 516 8456 or send an email to kthobisani@gmail.com

GKM VIEWPOINT LULAMILE MAPHOLOBA GREATER KOKSTAD MUNICIPAL MANAGER

WARM greetings to the Kokstad community. GKM INVITES UNEMPLOYED GRADUATES TO A MEETING Unemployment is very high in South Africa and it continues to be a concern for government. This is a challenge that is faced mostly by young people in

skilled and unskilled sectors. The greater Kokstad municipality is in the process of developing a youth development strategy. This strategy will serve as a guideline on how the municipality can address the challenges faced by young people in Kokstad. It is against this backdrop that the mayor Councillor Bheki Mtolo will conduct discussion sessions with Kokstad unemployed graduates. The purpose of this session is to develop the unemployed graduate’s database and to discuss ways in which municipal programmes are designed to assist in youth development. The session will

also provide a platform for unemployed graduates to consult and make comments on the draft youth development strategy. The municipality hereby invites all unemployed graduates within the municipal jurisdiction to a meeting scheduled as follows: - Date: February 26, 2020; Venue: Youth Centre; Time: 2pm. For more information please contact Khaya Xorile at 039 797 6600/6690 or email Khaya.Xorile@kokstad.gov.za AWARENESS CAMPAIGNS A consolidated awareness campaign

was held on Wednesday, February 19 at the Wetlands Primary School. These awareness campaigns are a continuous effort to enlighten communities at a grassroots level about matters pertaining to road safety, fire prevention and waste management. The engagement with young school children turned out to be vibrant and exciting. On Thursday, February 20, the municipal campaign was part of a multigovernmental awareness campaign spearheaded by the Department of Community Safety and Liaison aimed at curbing societal ills such as substance and alcohol abuse stemming

from the mushrooming of illegal taverns. The targeted area was the community of Horseshoe due to the large number of substance abuse cases reported in that area. Other stakeholders in the campaign were the KZN Liquor Authority, SANDF, SAPS, Correctional Services, Department of Home Affairs, Department of Health and GKM councillors. The awareness campaign was conducted by means of a motorcade around the Kokstad CBD followed by a community engagement session which took place at the JJ Mhlongo Hall. Till next time.

South Africa, please wake up! AFTER hearing what our new Eskom head had to say about the load-shedding phenomenon in South Africa, I must say I truly lost hope. In the same breath, I remembered that lies, deceit and dishonesty are after all a norm with our previous leaders, especially our last president before the current one, whose name I will not mention if I still wish to live long enough to see my minor children graduate from University. Apparently the infrastructure has been allowed to deteriorate so much that fixing it (not improving it so that it performs better), means that load-shedding will be part of our lives for the next 18 months. Eighteen months of business interruptions and countless hours of lost productivity in an already limping economy (thanks to the president that was voted in, just to spite some of us who had the prudence of voicing out that he was not good for our country). Graduates: how to get in gear for your first job search YOUR first job search after graduation can be both exciting and terrifying, particularly in South Africa where many qualified people compete for a limited number of vacancies. But the experience can be made much more rewarding, and the chances of success greater, by following a few simple guidelines, according to an education expert. 1) LAY THE GROUNDWORK “You have to make sure that all your paperwork is in order, such as copies of your ID, academic transcripts, your degree, and so forth. Depending on your field, you may need additional documentation specific to your industry. Ensure that you have these in hand and digital format, ready to submit when required,” said Wonga Ntshinga, Senior Head of Programme: Faculty of ICT at The Independent Institute of Education. 2) SET GOALS Ntshinga said one should spend a few hours every day on the search, and not leave it for when you feel like it. “Inspiration may never hit, so don’t wait for it. Set out each day with the aim of finding and applying for a certain number of opportunities. Scour online job listings, widen your net to related va-

cancies even if not a 100% match to your preferred position, and cold call companies’ HR departments. 3) ROPE IN THE EXPERTS “Join forces with recruitment agencies and approach your graduate institution for help with your search,” he advised. “A good institution will have specialist resources to help you prepare your CV, practise your interview skills, and assist you in identifying where you might need to strengthen or alter your approach. “There are also many public, private and online resources dedicated to assisting job-seekers, so identify and connect with those in your area.” 4) GROW PROFESSIONALLY WHILE YOU WAIT Ntshinga said it is vitally important not to stagnate professionally, particularly if the job-search takes a while. “You absolutely must stay on top of developments in your profession, by networking and developing your relevant skills. Spend some time every week honing your professional skills by applying what you learnt during your studies. If you keep going and keep growing, the doors of opportunity will start opening for you.” — Supplied.

price of the fuel dropped by over 90 cents in two weeks. Similar positive effects have been noted on the other main liquid fuels.” However, the Rand has weakened substantially over the same period, with the moving average against the US dollar slipping from just over R14.30 to R14.85. “This reflects underlying weak economic sentiment in South Africa, and we share the view of many commentators that further weakening is likely,” the Association said. Fortunately, the Rand’s poor showing was not enough to take the shine off the reduction in the landed prices of fuel. The AA said the trends from now to month-end would determine whether fuel prices could cling on to these gains. “If the Rand continues to slip, we might see some reversal of the trend,” it concluded. – Supplied

GOSPEL artist, Thami Manzini Zungu, has thanked the Kokstad community for supporting his music as he released his first album titled Baba Ngiyabonga containing 13 tracks. The album came out in September, 2019, and is available at local music stores and online stores. He arrived in Kokstad in 2017 coming from the Umlazi Township in Durban. He said that since he came to Kokstad he has received warmth and friendliness from the community. “Kokstad is a peaceful place, with people who support my music and I don’t regret coming here,” said the gospel star Zungu, who started singing from a young age in school choirs and Sunday school. He is one of the founders of the Abanqobi Music Group, established in 1999. The group has won several awards including the Best Acapella Group for three years at the SABC Crown Gospel Music Awards and has branded itself after a number of performances across the country, of which Zungu was also a part. He said that to prepare for the album he worked with other gospel artists. He has produced the album by himself, and to record it, he was assisted by Cut n’ Edit Studios. “I am now busy marketing the album to radio stations and at digital stores. It is available,” he said. He added that hiking has helped him meet new people, it improves his mental health, helps him to understand his strengths and weaknesses and it develops a sense of kindness to other people. He said he wants his family to take up hiking, especially his daughter Yolanda Gumede. To be able to do hiking successfully, he said healthy food is key, including enough preparation, and fitness. When he grew up he said his favourite sport was soccer, but now mountain climbing is his favourite sport even though it is challenging.
