MANY people either look forward to the festive pe­ riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc­ tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season.

As we get ready to wind down and take a breath­ er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was.

Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all.

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka­ ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world.

South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy.

It’s been a year since his death and many ques­ tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri­ cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’.

Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some­ times comes to the fore.

Tongaat pupils paying it forward R

EPRESENTATIVES of the Tongaat Child and Family Welfare Society (TCFWS); including board of management member Mr. Balan Subramunier, senior social worker Mrs. Devi Naidoo and admin staff member Mr Avinash Punwasi; visited Flambel Primary School on Tuesday, January 29 to present a certificate to the school for their outstanding contributions made towards the Children’s Fund.

Addressing the assembly, Subramunier gave special thanks to the principal, the teachers, and all the pupils for their sincere commitment and hard work in ensuring that a successful contribution was made.

He highlighted that the children’s fund was initiated after research conducted showed the link between hunger reduction, improved nutrition, and children’s learning.

The monies received will help to sustain the Schools Breakfast Programme and ensure that needy pupils are getting breakfast before the commencement of the school day.

Subramunier further stated that the TCFWS is geared towards helping not only the communities at large, but more especially its children, stating that: “Currently, 2 566 pupils are benefiting daily from this programme whereby a nutritious breakfast cereal, Morvite, is provided to pupils before the commencement of the school day.”

Also addressing the assembly, Naidoo said: “What inspires Tongaat Child and Family Welfare Society is witnessing children engage in the simple act of giving.”

She stated that their contributions “helped feed a child for a day” and encouraged and motivated pupils to continue working with the society as a team to volunteer their efforts towards making the programme a success.

According to Mthokozisi Mdakane and OSS convener Sam Ntombela, the aim of the programme was to address

the issue of poor service delivery by waste collection units that was raised by the residents during the OSS Outreach programme held last year.

It was also aimed at informing the residents about the change of the col-

lection day, which is Thursday’s at 7am.

CIIU officials and Mdakane urged residents to report corruption.

Ntombela concluded by thanking all participants of this programme,

especially the leadership/management of eThekwini Municipality for prioritising the needs of the people as the caring city.

Development coordinator Goodman­ Mabele, who heads the capacity building project, explained that the program deals with people who have been affected by spinal injuries — primarily those aren’t used to being in a wheelchair and who find it hard to cope with their new lifestyle.

“We take in people from all over KwaZulu-Natal to teach them how they can cope with being in a wheelchair. We want to show them there’s still hope, even though they won’t be the same as before,” he said.

The programme takes in new candidates each month, where they spend a whole month in a house. In addition, they have a caregiver looking after them and are given training about a variety of things, such as how they can construct a curriculum vitae and how to go about looking for a job.

“They are given basic education on how they can look after themselves now that they are wheelchair-bound,” he said.

Mabele added that this program highlights the fact that there’s life after disability and they can still achieve their goals.

“This is to give them hope that they can still achieve anything, like a person who’s not in a wheelchair can, because they can still get married, drive their own cars, and have a career,” said Mabele.

“Giving up is not an option, rather one should accept the situation they find themselves in and they must live their lives to the fullest.

“We assure people that if they choose to live in regret, a lot of good things will pass them by. They need to make the best of every situation,” said Mabele.

Illegal connection scam THE Municipality would like to caution the public against a scam in which people are being duped into believing that their electricity connection is illegal and then being bribed or intimidated into paying for the electricity to be reconnected.

Electricity customers in various township areas are being targeted by thieves who produce a fake letter, allegedly from the Municipality, threatening the customer that their supply is illegally connected and will be switched off and the cable removed if they do not pay their arrears. They then request that the customer pay an amount of money directly to them so that the customer may not be disconnected.

While the Municipality does send letters to customers who connect their services illegally, the public should be aware that at no stage should any payment be made to any individual in the field.

Payments to the city are only accepted at the municipal banking halls and cashiers in authorised centres.

Members of the public should ask for names and the company for which the con-

tractor works.

Contractors must always display ID Cards and must be in red overalls, failing which they should not be allowed in the customer’s premises.

The contractor must inform the customer of his or her intention. Any contractor vehicle must also display the company logo.

Customers may call at any of the Electricity Customer Service Centres to confirm

Taxi boss killed in drive-by shooting

SAPS Tongaat appeal to the members of the community to refrain from buying stolen property. This is after two women aged 26 and 56 were arrested and appeared in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court for being in possession of suspected stolen goods on January 29.

According to a police report, the women bought cellphones from a robbery suspect who robbed people in Tongaat.

Police spokesperson in Tongaat, Captain Patrick Ngwane, said: “The detectives were interviewing the suspect in connection with a robbery that occurred in Hambanathi. The suspect led the police to a certain house in Hambanathi where two women were found in possession of stolen cellphones.

The two women confirmed that they bought the cellphones from the suspect.

“They were arrested and detained at SAPS Tongaat.”

• The biological parents of Buhle Madlala who was born on June 19, 2003. Buhle was abandoned by her mother at the Stanger Hospital in 2003 just after birth. Both her parents are unknown. She was placed in the care of Nonhlanhla Deborah Mthembu who died on February 5, 2007.

• The biological father of Lerato Sinenhlanhla Mtambo, who was born on July 14, 2006, and Lebo Asanda Mtambo, who was born on February 29, 2008. The biological mother, Thokozile Happiness Mtambo, died on September 3, 2009. The family is originally from Magwaveni, Tongaat.

• The biological father of Mnqobi Mlondi Shange, who was born on March 5, 2017. The biological mother is Nozipho Princess Shange (born on February 26, 1990). The family is originally from Hambanathi, Tongaat.

Two appear in court for possession of stolen goods

A

TAXI boss died after being shot multiple times during an alleged drive-by shooting which took place on Greylands Road in Magwaveni, Tongaat on Friday.

According to members of the Reason Unit South Africa (RUSA), at approximately 5.41pm the RUSA Tongaat Operations Centre received multiple calls from the public who reported shots being fired in the vicinity.

“Upon arrival the bullet-riddled body of the victim was discovered in his VW Polo. Paramedics from the Provincial Ambulance Service accessed the victim and found that he had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his head and face.

Approximately 25 spent 9mm cartridges were found on the road.

“It is alleged that the occupants of a red VW GTi pulled up next to the deceased’s vehicle while he was travelling on the Greylands Road and opened fire on him. The deceased’s identity has been established,” said RUSA in a statement.

The motive for the murder is believed to be taxi related.

Charity fair set to entertain THE Tongaat Child Welfare Charity Fair is set to run from February 28 to March 3.

This year, Child Welfare has brought back Little Pony and Company, whose ponies featured at the fair for the first time last year and were a definite highlight for all the little ones at the ground who thoroughly enjoyed the fun and lovable ponies.

Little Pony and Company has been in existence for the past six years. The company will be featuring its ponies on March 2, and during the Tongaat Child Welfare Checkout Children’s Carnival on March 3. Little Pony and Company has three horses and five ponies who love to party.

One of their ponies, named Nappi, has been involved in many exciting adventures, from being a ring bearer at a wedding to photo shoots, pulling his carriage, giving rides and just hanging out with his fans, and is often involved in fundraisers and has a passion for all his little fans.

The ponies were also involved in the Durban Botanical Gardens’ Trail of Lights, giving over 1 000 rides to the children of Durban and surrounds.

Little Pony and Company has been named as one of the top 25 activities to experience in Durban by Active Activities KZN.

AFTER more than 200 deaths linked to a listeria bacteria outbreak that was apparently spread by its factory, Enterprise’s polony is back on the shelves with small changes to its packaging.

It has not re-entered the market at a discount; Enterprise polony is among the most expensive on shelves, we checked. Polony prices increased sharply in December 2018, and are now above the price from a year ago, before the listeriosis outbreak.

Side-by-side shelf comparisons this week showed that Enterprise is on sale for a premium of seven percent over Pick n Pay’s “No Name” house brand French polony, and at a price nearly 20% more than chicken polony.

Eskort-branded French polony, which was not linked to the listeria

bacteria and remained on most shelves throughout, was available at a similar 7,5% premium.

The boldest changes on the Enterprise polony are a safety seal and stamp that implies each polony has “passed” a “7 step quality check process” that provides “improved food safety”. The package does not disclose anything more about the process of the quality check.

Enterprise has also added the words “pasteurised” and “hygienic” to the polony sleeves, although the latter refers to the clips that seal each polony. The new packaging retains the phrase “quality ingredients”, but replaces a previous claim that it is “quick and convenient” with

Fast growth at King Shaka airport KING Shaka International Airport (KSIA) in Durban ended 2018 on a record high by growing international passenger numbers by 13% in December 2018.

This, together with strong domestic passenger growth of more than six percent for 2018, saw KSIA retaining its position as South Africa’s fastest growing major airport for a second year.

The December peak season performance followed an 11% increase in international passenger numbers for November compared with November 2017. KSIA handled almost 5,9 million domestic and international passengers in total during 2018, of which 372 543 were passengers flying on international routes.

“British Airways’ new non-stop service between London’s Heathrow International Airport and Durban, introduced in late October 2018, has propelled growth at KSIA. “We are now seeing double-digit growth in international passengers,” said Hamish Erskine, co-chair of Durban Direct and CEO of Dube TradePort Corporation.

“The three times a week flight has proved that there is an untapped demand for direct air services into Durban. The growth we are seeing with the Durban to London route is in line with the projected growth demonstrated by our business case to British Airways, which factored into its decision to introduce the direct route,” he added.

Erskine said that besides the 11% international passenger growth in November and 13% growth in December 2018, respectively (compared to the November and December 2017), KSIA’s international passenger numbers grew by a 42% record high month-on-month between November and December 2018.

Besides the new British Airways route, this was due to Emirates putting on extra flights between Dubai and Durban in December.

According to official statistics from the Airports Company of South Africa, KSIA handled a total of 5 880 390 passengers in 2018, showing a growth of 6,4%.

The airport also handled a record total of 553 149 passengers in December 2018, of which 4 1054 where travelling on international routes. KSIA’s previous record month was in December 2017, when it handled 520 930 passengers.

“As Durban Direct, our aim is to develop and grow Durban’s passenger market. We have already started engaging with the private sector in order to help us expand the impact of the programme,” said Erskine.

“One of the initiatives within this programme involves working with our airline partners to further stimulate passenger growth through the implementation of an international integrated marketing plan.

“The ultimate aim is to create an environment where our airline partners see significant growth in demand, which will enable them to justify introducing additional frequencies into Durban,” he said.

Phindile Makwakwa, co-chair of Durban Direct and CEO Tourism KwaZulu-Natal, said: “Air services play a critical role in growing the tourism market within Durban. The December peak season saw domestic and international passenger arrivals and departures reach a record 553 149 — a growth of six percent.

“A significant portion of these were international leisure seekers, landing in Durban for the festive season and exploring the rest of KwaZulu-Natal.”

She added: “Growth in passengers flying direct to Durban from international markets is on the rise, however, Johannesburg continues to be an important transit point for international travelers connecting into Durban on domestic flights.

“Nevertheless, the introduction of the non-stop service between Durban and London by British Airways has

seen an increase in international passengers flying directly into Durban during November and December 2018.”

Phillip Sithole, eThekwini Municipality’s deputy city manager for economic development and planning, said: “Tourists spent some R2,7 billion in Durban during the 2018 festive season, which is an increase of R500 million.

“We foresee this number growing with the introduction of new domestic, regional and international flights.”

Sithole added: “We have been working on a co-ordinated strategy together with tourism organisations and the industry to maintain the high standard of tourism products we offer as a city.

“This, together with greater international and local air connectivity, have seen Durban capably host a million visitors during the festive season.”

For the medium term, Durban Direct’s approach will be to focus on growing the frequency and capacity of the airline partners that currently service KSIA. The long-term objective is to attract a direct air link to the Far East, possibly a direct air service into either Singapore or Hong Kong, which would provide better air access to mainland China, Japan, South Korea and South East Asia.

Meanwhile, Erskine said that cargo tonnage throughput from Dube TradePort’s Cargo Terminal continues to follow closely on the heels of passenger numbers, with international airfreight growing by 40% from April to December 2018.

With the introduction of new air services, the market is quick to utilise the additional capacity, fuelling airfreight demand across the board.

From October until the end of December 2018, international cargo figures grew by 7,64%, following the introduction of British Airways’ direct service to Durban.

Teams set to take to the turf for the ninth schools’ challenge T

HE dates for the ninth annual Spar KZN School Girls’ Hockey Challenge have been announced. The 10 regionals will be taking place around KZN. The year gets under way a week later than previous years, with the usual Northern KZN regional sitting midway on the 2019 calendar. A bumper March has four tournaments taking place back-to-back over two weekends.

Kicking off the year is the Pieter­maritzburg Regionals, with the Central and Northern regionals set to be played on March 3, hosted by onetime winners St John’s DSG and The Wykeham Collegiate.

March 9 sees the Durban North Regional taking place at Crawford La Lucia. Durban Girls’ High School hosts the Durban Central Regional at Three Schools Trust on March 10.

The fifth regional is the first of two tournaments taking place in April. On April 7, Amanzimtoti will see the teams for the Durban South Regional at Three Schools Trust. Heading further south, the challenge moves to Port Shepstone for the Sisonke and Ugu

Southern KZN Regional tournament on April 13 at host school Creston College.

The final four tournaments all take place in May, where the action moves inland to Newcastle’s St Dominic’s for the Northern KZN Regional on May 4.

Remaining inland for the Umvoti, uThukela and Umzinyathi Regional on May 11, defending champs Greytown High School will host.

Unfolding the next day, the Highway Regional will take place at Thomas More College.

Wrapping up the regionals, Grantleigh will host the Northern KZN Coastal Regional on May 19.

Once all the winners are revealed at the 10 regionals, the 10 regional representatives will converge at St Mary’s DSG two months later for the grand finals.

The riveting grand finals will get under way on July 20, and continue on July 21, where the ninth victorious team will be crowned.

EVENTEEN people die every minute from cancer in the world” — this according to the World Health Organisation. World Cancer Day is commemorated annually on February 4 to raise awareness about cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection and treatment.

Cancer survivor Karen Buxton chose to share her journey with cancer to encourage others to never give up hope.

Buxton was first diagnosed with breast cancer seven years ago. She said that when she went for a routine mammogram and ultrasound, it picked up a cancerous lump in her right breast.

“I was told to book an appointment immediately to see a surgeon.

“I remember sitting in my car crying hysterically, unable to drive. I phoned my husband to tell him but I could barely get the words out I was crying so hard.

“He arrived at the hospital car park and just held me, telling me we will get through this.

“A couple of days later, I saw the surgeon and he booked the surgery for Valentine’s Day (of all days).

“He also referred me to a wonderful and very understanding oncologist who took me through all my various options.

“At that stage, the surgeon had informed me that they would only know what they were dealing with once he had done the surgery.

“My best-case scenario was a lumpectomy — a breast conserving surgery to remove cancer where only a portion of the breast is removed.

“The worst case was a mastectomy, but he would only know once he had operated,” said Buxton.

She said that the fear of what she was about to go through at that stage was indescribable.

“All I could think of was that I needed to stay alive for my husband and my children and that I wanted to see my children grow up. I didn’t want to die.

“A fear of hospitals and anaesthetic added to my stress. Strangely, the fear of losing my breast didn’t affect me. I could cope with that. I didn’t want to die.”

She said that the one thing that got her throught it was prayer. “I prayed like I had never prayed before. I felt very alone even though I wasn’t. On the day of the surgery I was an absolute wreck. I cried from the time I arrived at the hospital in the very early morning until they wheeled me into theatre at midday.

“I was one of the fortunate ones. I had a

lumpectomy and the surgeon assured me that he had removed everything and that all the surrounding tissue that he had removed was fine.

“As a result, I never needed chemo or radiation. The oncologist wanted me to have treatment ‘just in case’ but the surgeon who I had put my trust and life in his hands said that he was happy that he had removed everything and that the surrounding tissue was fine. He said he didn’t feel that I needed to put my body through the treatment, and I trusted his word.”

However, just two years after her breast cancer, Buxton found out that she had ovarian cancer after a routine visit to her gynaecologist for a pap smear and during the ultrasound he found a huge mass on her left ovary.

“This time I didn’t have time to be scared. I was rushed into hospital after he did a blood test and the results showed that my iron levels had dropped so dangerously low that I needed an iron transfusion immediately.

“He said that without it I would have been dead within three days. I had been feeling very tired and lethargic for ages and had just put it down to day-to-day stresses.

“Two days after the transfusion I had a hysterectomy. The doctor left my right ovary but removed everything else. He said I was too young to go through early menopause so as a result he left my right ovary. Now, I go every year for a CA125 blood test.”

Buxton now proudly calls herself a cancer survivor.

“I am one of the lucky ones and for this I thank God every day. I go every year without fail for a mammogram and ultrasound. Every year in January/February I still stress about ‘what if’. I always take a friend with me for moral support.

I went for my tests last week and I am clear.

“I don’t think you ever truly get over something like this. Even now, I’m still in tears if I talk about it. Just remembering brings back a memory of a time that I would not wish on anyone.

“Did it make me a stronger person? No, it just made me realise that we must live each day to the fullest. Don’t put off things that you can do now.”

She said that there are counselling groups all over Durban for people who have cancer. Don’t go through this alone. You need to have a support group, whether it is family or friends or strangers who are going through the same or who have been through it and who are survivors.

“The right mind-set is also very important. I started meditation classes at a time when I was feeling too stressed to cope. Learning relaxation skills helped me to cope when I was alone and having panic attacks as a result of high stress,” she added.

by Sydenham AC attracted a huge field on a wet morning as athletes enthusiastically and buoyantly assembled at the start last week.

Participants had 16-km and 32- km options to choose from, with each athlete aiming to shape up for the season ahead. The race route was undulating and tough, with the 32-km runners meandering along the hills of Westville. The rolling hills, together with the coastal humidity, made for a difficult challenge. FOLLOWING the previous week’s misfortune, Jenna Ward put in another strong performance to take her second win of the series at race four, the Thule Surfski Challenge, of the 2019 Marine Surfski Series last Friday evening, while Hank McGregor continued his perfect record.

Race three saw Ward get caught on the shark nets on her way in, which cost her the chance to fight it out in the end sprint; but last Friday’s race saw it all go to plan for the Euro Steel/Fenn Kayaks star as she got herself in front towards the end and pressed home the advantage for a convincing win. “I wanted to do the pulling on the front because the conditions were pretty flat,” Ward said.

It was another great turnout in some

A former age-group Surfski World champion, Ward was pushed all the way by Michelle Burn, who won her third second-place finish of the series, while Kyeta Purchase added a third to her list of achievements.

In the men’s race, Euro Steel/Fenn Kayaks’ Hank McGregor was unrivalled once again, making it three wins from as many appearances. He beat Matt Bouman by a minute while Gene Prato finished in third place on the day.

JUNIORS led the way at team VAC runs this weekend.

Sandra Nkilwane attempted her novice 10 000m track event and scythed through the field in an impressive 37 minute run, averaging 3.7 minutes per kilometre, a day after a gruelling two hour training session. Her early season form speaks volumes as she seems to continue where she left off last year. She followed through a 15km run on Sunday in 1.43, starting fifteen minutes late, which when adjusted provides

a finish of 1.13, leaving many seasoned male runners in her wake.

VAC 2018 junior runner Sihle Mpanza led the 10km run with Ronald Ngiba in 51 minutes, with newcomer Tasvir Singh two minutes behind at 53.14. Another newcomer in VAC silks, Benny Malgas eased through in 55 minutes ahead of Walter Mthembu in fifty seven minutes.

The two were eager to put in some endurance and speed work for the upcoming comrades marathon this year. Another newcomer, Francis

Mabaso ran stride for stride with Walter Mthembu. Nan Maharaj, Cynthia Zondi, Joey Chetty, Dolly Moodley, and Yvonne Nair were accompanied by veterans Vishhnu Moodley and Rajesh Ramdhularie in the 10km edition. Melisha Ramsaroop and Lucy Mudaly attempted their first 10km, with VAC’s staggered approach, and finished with great excitement in 2.07, delighted with their progress after having attempted many 5km runs recently.
