HE team at Blue Ocean Dive is committed to raising funds for the Khanya Hospice this September by hosting various raffles, lucky draws, and selling goods and biscuits.

According to the hospice, the owner of Blue Ocean Dive, Gary Snodgrass, wanted to help and do their share for the hospice, which looks after patients with cancer, HIV/Aids and TB from the old Durban Airport to Hibberdene.

CEO of Khanya Hospice, Neil McDonald, said: “Khanya Hospice nursing staff are called angels, they are trained in pain and symptom control. People don’t have to suffer with pain. The team was well aware that Khanya does not get any government funding and have to arrange fundraising events.”

PURNAL POONUSAMY >>Purnal.Poonusamy@media24.com AFTER receiving information that there is a new scam sweeping through the region, one that is targeting pensioners, the eThekwini Municipality is urging customers to be vigilant of criminals posing as Municipal employees who are scamming residents of money.

According to a press statement released by the municipality, pensioners are being scammed via telephonic calls whereby persons masquerading as municipal officials are offering pensioners a rebate for water meters. These callers then issue a reference number to the resident and inform them that another official will visit over the next few days to present the resident with forms that need to be completed and signed in order to qualify for the rebate.

The municipality would like to confirm that there is no such process, nor under any circumstances will customers be asked to make on the spot cash payments. Any representative of the Municipality will have an ID tag with a photograph, ID or employee number with the Municipal logo.

Joyce Reddy, a Toti resident, said: “First and foremost, no persons without official credentials

should be allowed to step on the property. If need be, get the contact details and call the department immediately. People, especially the elderly, need to be extra vigilant. No person, even one in uniform can be trusted. Verification is compulsory.

There are too many people out there ready to take advantage of others.”

The only rebate currently offered by the Municipality is a rates rebate. According to the municipality, property owners qualify for the rebate on their primary property when they turn 60. This rebate is renewed annually. Both new application forms and renewal forms are found on the municipal website. All rebate renewal forms are completed and submitted to the municipal offices.

Payments for these rebates are made via the municipal banking halls, Sizakala centres, and or the third party collectors indicated on the bill.

Any new application by a pensioner can be done at any of the customer service centres or downloaded via www.durban.gov.za and submitted via e-mail or at one of the municipal customer or Sizakala centres.

If residents are suspicious of anything, they can contact the toll free number 080 311 11 11 or http://correspondence.durban.gov.za:200/ or the City Investigation Unit on 0800 20 20 20 or the nearest police station.

Drug bust near Toti THE persistence of the SAPS’ Provincial Drug Unit members to root-out drug trade and drug abuse in the province yielded results when two female suspects were arrested at Isipingo. The arrested suspects will appear in the Durban Magistrates’ Court.

On September 14, police pounced on two suspects aged 40 and 57 in Malukazi area, Isipingo, and recovered 789 capsules of mandrax and

150 heroin tablets, with an estimated value of R60 000, packaged and ready for distribution.

Suspects were immediately arrested and taken to Isipingo police station for detention.

They were charged for dealing in drugs and cash suspected to be the proceeds of drug trade was also confiscated. Similar operations are continuing throughout the province to eradicate the escalation of drugs. — Supplied

KZN FCS units shine during Women’s Month FAMILY Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Units in KwaZulu-Natal concluded Women’s Month in excellent form by securing a number of convictions for crimes against women and children in August.

Teams of dedicated investigators from FCS Units around the province were in a position to secure 44 convictions during the same period whilst other cases remain under investigation or are still at court. Among those convicted, 12 accused were sentenced to life imprisonment for rape cases whilst others were sentenced to a total of 394 years in prison. A total of 402 suspects were also arrested during the same month for various crimes such as rape, sexual assault, assault GBH, attempted murder, common assault, concealment of birth, kidnapping, as well as other sexual offences.

These seasoned investigators will continue to persevere in bringing those who abuse women and children to book. Citizens can be assured that all cases in their hands will be thoroughly investigated to ensure that those implicated end up in prison. — Supplied

Toti intruder nabbed A

PRIVATE security officer has been praised for his quick response which led to the arrest of a suspected thief. The suspect is now in police custody.

The Fidelity ADT Monitoring Centre recently received a panic alarm signal from an Athlone Park premises and immediately dispatched Armed Response Officer (ARO) Wiseman Khambule­, who arrived at the Prince Street property within minutes.

“All our ARO’s are equipped with PTT (Pushto-talk) devices which enable them to receive auto dispatch signals as soon as a client’s alarm is activated, enhancing response times. In emergency situations such as these, we are all aware that time is of the essence and we therefore ensure that all our responses are done in an effective and efficient manner,”said District Manager for Fidelity ADT KwaZulu-Natal Ivan Govender.

Upon arrival, the ARO checked in with the homeowner who advised that he had seen a suspect in his garden. ARO Khambule immediately conducted a perimeter check and soon spotted the suspect hiding in a TLB that was parked in the corner of the property. The suspect was successfully apprehended and handed over for arrest to members of the Amanzimtoti South African Police Service (SAPS).

“I encourage the community to make sure that their alarms are maintained in order to ensure that everything is functioning properly. It is also important to conduct regular security assessments in order to resolve any vulnerable or unprotected areas to deter opportunistic criminals. Security technologies such as CCTV, outdoor beams and roof passives are often used to proactively prevent crime,” concludes Govender­. — Supplied

Six pupils show what they ‘LIV’ for

A

T a time when most teenage girls are thinking about boys, matric dance dresses and the latest news on their Facebook feed, there is a group of girls from Girls High School (GHS) in Pietermaritzburg that are doing everything but. They have chosen to put their energies into climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro and raising funds for LIV Village. These girls are Joelle Botha, Rutendo Gora, Julie Moreno, Maria Diedrick, Taylan Mornet and Masibonge Ngcobo.

It all started with Joelle’s desire to “empower others with hope, to fulfil a dream and to help others LIV” — this in reference to her desire to see the lives of the children at LIV Village changed for the better, as well as a desire to see individuals dare to dream and to believe that all things are possible.

This isn’t Joelle’s first foray into fundraising. Noticing that some girls at school were unable to attend school excursions due to financial constraints, she actively supported the founding of the GHS Outreach Fund and soon embarked on the gruelling 256 km Tankwa Camino Trail with her father, Craig.

Inspired by her success, she decided to dream even bigger with the project “Helping Others LIV”.

Botha’s enthusiasm, encouraged by the staff at GHS, inspired others to dream big, take the risk and apply for selection to participate on the opportunity to climb Kilimanjaro, one of the seven summits of the world. After the final selection process, the six girls were a team, united in spirit by a common goal to help others. The girls are

LIV Village is a village for orphaned and vulnerable children in Cottonlands, near Verulam, in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. In keeping with the African saying that “it takes a village to raise a child”, the homes are built within clusters of eight to ten houses, each with a House Mother and up to six or eight children to look after.

Says founder Tich Smith: “Twelve thousand kids are being orphaned every month and I believe that if we don’t do something about it, it’s going to have

a hugely negative impact on the nation.

Therefore, we’ve built this village in KwaZulu-Natal where we’re hoping to have 1 000 children and we’re hoping to build villages all over the nation. I believe that it could truly transform our nation”. And transforming a nation is what these courageous girls hope to achieve, with both their fundraising and the determination to dream big and succeed at the task at hand; climbing Kilimanjaro. The route they will be taking is the most scenic and the one that allows for maximum acclimatisation to the increased altitude. The recommended time for the Machame Route is typically six to seven days. The journey will be difficult, and the fun-

draising will be an incredibly important factor in the success of the journey.

As the girls say: “We see the challenge of this climb as our way of overcoming the obstacles in the lives of the kids at LIV Village. It’s our way of giving back and being the light and inspiration to those who face struggles on a daily basis. We feel it’s important to be able to dream and we want to show others that with the right motivation and support you can do anything you put your heart to.”

Local role model honoured ANNUALLY, the Kamalinee Women’s Committee (KWC) honours a role model and mentor who has made sterling contributions to humanity. The bust of Nefertiti is presented to the recipient.

Nefertiti was a role model who was humble, pious, and stood up for the disadvantaged or marginalised community.

Therefore, the KWC found it fitting to honour a forerunner in education, community service, and voice for the marginalised communities with this prestigious award.

This year’s Annual Leading Lady Awards Ceremony was a prestigious event where one outstanding individual was recognised and appreciated by the KWC for their contributions to under privileged individuals and the community at large.

KWC’s Leading Lady for 2018 is Sindha Muruven (Cindy), and she has indeed earned her way into the company of many great women who have served as previous recipients.

Muruven is involved in voluntary service and the upliftment of humanity. The lifeblood of this diminutive, yet resilient woman is to be an instrument of selfless service to others.

Some of her contributions include a lunch club, the distribution of sanitary pads to less fortunate females, donation of uniforms for needy children, the collection and distribution of second-hand clothes to the less fortunate, a Christmas party for the children of Kamalinee Primary School, the collection and distribution of toiletry

ACCORDING to CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation, September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month as well as gold ribbon month, in honour of the late Nelson Mandela’s 100th birthday.

The foundation encourages all South Africans to “Give Hope, GO Gold” by purchasing a gold satin ribbon, which symbolises support for children with cancer.

This ribbon is to be worn throughout September and on Fridays other items from CHOC’s Gold merchandise line can be worn and uploaded on the foundation’s social media pages.

During this awareness month, CHOC and their ambassadors will be visiting the public in order to educate them about childhood cancer and the early warning signs to be aware of.

CHOC stated that, according to Childhood Cancer International, childhood cancer continues to be the leading cause of non-communicable related death in children throughout the world. Globally, more than 300 000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year with about 1 000 new cases in South Africa alone.

CHOC states that many childhood cancers have a higher survival rate when diagnosed early. Despite this, most childhood cancers are overlooked or misdiagnosed due to early symptoms being attributed to more common illnesses and injuries.

As part of the organisations awareness programmes, CHOC provides leaflets that detail the early warning signs of childhood cancers.

CHOC provides comprehensive countrywide support for children with cancer and other life-threatening blood disorders, as well as their families. Their range of comprehensive support to affected families includes parent to parent support, counselling by a CHOC social worker, and practical support such as accommodation in CHOC houses nationwide, transport and recreational activities.

In addition, the organisation creates awareness of early detection of cancer, supports health professionals, upgrades treatment facilities into child-friendly environments and advocates for those whose lives have been affected by this disease.

Hospice receives memorial donation K

HANYA Hospice of Umkomaas was the recent recipient of a R30 000 donation, which was made on behalf of former Umkomaas and Amanzimtoti Resident John Henry (Henk) van der Berg, who passed away in 2017 due to Melanoma Cancer.

Van der Berg was living in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2014 when he was diagnosed with cancer in June and given approximately six months to live.

Unwilling to succumb to defeat, Van der Berg confronted his diagnoses head on for three years by getting treated as well as working and exercising daily. He even participated in a few 3km and 5km desert races with friends in Dubai.

Van der Berg inspired fellow expats from all over the world living in Dubai to support his battle; thus creating the half marathon support event known as “Half-for-Henk”.

Near the end of 2016, the cancer spread throughout Van der Berg’s body and, in April of 2017, he succumbed to the disease. He is survived by his wife Natasha, his daughters Charlize and Natasia, and his grandson Landon.

Van der Berg’s wife, Natasha, said: “Henk was a force to be reckoned with, but at the same time, the kindest person who, despite his massive size and strength, loved to just sit back peacefully and watch the world. He loved life and he loved God.” “It was ironic that the last few years of Henk’s life were a constant was battle for life... As a health and safety manager, it was his job to keep others alive on their work sites, and ensure that they returned home safely to their families.

He did this all the while battling for his own life, fighting cancer daily, to make it home to his family!”

Born in 1969, Van der Berg grew up in Wakkerstroom and Volksrus, but spent most of his adult life in Umkomaas, Amanzimtoti, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Receiving his degree in Safety Management enabled him to work in the Middle East for just over a decade and support his family through tough times back in South Africa.

Berg. Wood successfully completed the challenge and created a fundraiser in his memory with the hashtag: #HenkStrength.

Wood said: “Coming from a small country town in Western Australia, my parents taught me to work hard and gave me many opportunities to do what I love. For this I’m forever grateful. In 2015, I moved to Dubai and was fortunate to meet some new mates — one of these stood out from the crowd: Henk van der Berg. He loved life and everyone he surrounded himself with. I’m very privileged to have met him and wish we could have shared more moments.”

“I recognised a synergy between my own personal journey and Henk, with his belief, being mentally strong and having the discipline to fight an awful disease. Thus, I reached out to his wife, Natasha, and asked if I could dedicate running the MDS in honour of Henk, and in the process raise funds for a cause that meant something and would help future people in similar situations,” added Wood.

The fundraiser managed to accu-

mulate R36 000, with R30 000 going to Khanya Hospice and R6 000 to Cycling for Mobility (an organisation that raises funds to provide wheelchairs).

Khanya Hospice was selected as Van der Berg spent his last few weeks under their care. The Hospice provided support and assistance, not only to the patient, but his family as well.

Natasha said: “Hospice’s Sister Veronica and CEO Neil McDonald were constantly available and provided incredible support! We are so grateful to the Khanya Hospice team that helped so much. We could not have gotten through this without them. And while we are still mourning the loss of this giant of a man, it’s amazing to see how Henk inspired friends from across the globe to be active, positive, and support both Khanya Hospice and Cycling for Mobility!”

KN (Kalisha Naicker): Tell me a little about your experience as a Chef?

JF (Janine Fourie): I completed my in-service training as well as professional chef diploma at the Granger Bay Hotel School in Cape Town and spent 17 years gaining valuable local and international culinary experience, front and back of house. I joined Protea Hotels International in 1998. At the end of 2002 I travelled to the UK. I was a Jnr Sous Chef at the Ramada Hotel in Docklands, working side by side with internationally acclaimed Michelin star Belgian Chef, Steve Van Remoortel. Two years later I returned to South Africa as Executive Chef at Stonehill Restaurant. In 2009 I travelled to Nigeria, where I found working on the African continent a very challenging experience logistically. In 2010 I moved to the award-winning, five-star Diva Maldives (renamed LUX* Maldives) as Executive Sous Chef, after which I joined the prestigious luxury cruise line, Silversea. I worked as an Executive Chef for two restaurants at the Knai Bang Chatt Hotel, an 18room, boutique hotel in Kep, Cambodia in the

Gulf of Thailand. In 2015 I was appointed as the Head Chef at Big Easy Durban Winebar & Grill by Ernie Els and in 2018 I was appointed as the Executive Chef at Hilton Durban.

KN: What is your first food memory?

JF: As a child I remember spending Christmas days with all the family at the beach house of my grandparents, right on the beach of Paternoster in the west coast. Days before the lamb would be roasted, lots and lots of salad made (like my mom’s famous potato salad), roasted chicken and gammon.

Then the best part was my grandma used to make a sherry trifle for dessert (with lots of sherry), and hide 5c coins in it and the challenge was always to try and see who got the most coins.

KN: Who has influenced your cooking the most?

JF: I don’t really think it just a person, but definitely travelling has influenced my cooking — working with different chefs and trying out new ingredients KN: Fill in the blank: If I weren’t a chef, I’d be…

JF: ….travelling every day to a new place.

KN: Best cooking tip for a novice?

JF: Be adventurous, try out something new, travel and taste everything (even weird insects).

KN: Why should people attend your restaurant?

JF: Because there is so much love and thought that went into preparing every meal, each dish on the menu actually tells a story.

PP (Purnal Poonusamy): Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

JD (Julie Dunwoodie): I am Julie Ann Dunwoodie, I am 71. I am from Toti, originally, but now we [her family] live in Scottburgh.

PP: Can you tell us a bit about your career and interests?

JD: I’ve always been a stay home mum. I do yoga, and I raised my children and I love sewing and, you know, all the home sort of crafts.

PP: How long have you been painting and what inspired you to start?

JD: I started painting in 1982. I’ve been painting for a long time, and I paint watercolours.

I just thought “I want to paint, I’m staying at home” and when your kids get to high school they don’t need you around so I was looking for something to do.

I went to library, got a book out,

bought some materials, and off I went.

It’s very difficult at this stage in the economy to afford the art materials.

Before it used to be okay, but now it’s harder.

PP: What career related steps have you taken in regards to your craft?

JD: I used to (exhibit), but art has kind of quietened down quite a bit. I belong to the Watercolour society of South Africa in Westville and I got my associateship with them. If you look at my paintings I sign it with AWSSA on it.

PP: What do you like about working with Art on Kingsway?

JD: This is my first time exhibiting there because I moved last year, and it was like an upside down year.

PP: What inspires your work?

JD: I’ve changed now from ordinary watercolour abstract to botanical paintings. And we’re living in a complex where it’s all indigenous stuff, so I take my own photographs, put them on the computer, and I paint.

PP: Do you have words of motivation or inspiration for other aspiring painters?

JD: It’s lovely, its very time consuming and it helps you to switch off and get into your own world.

Heritage Day H

ERITAGE Day is one of the newly-created South African public holidays. It is a day in which all are encouraged to celebrate their cultural traditions in the wider context of the great diversity of cultures, beliefs and traditions that make up the nation of South Africa. The question of national or cultural heritage is, however, not without its complications.

In a country of 11 different official languages and a turbulent recent political past, one is obliged to ask, for instance, whose heritage it is that South Africans are being called to celebrate.

Another point of contention is that in a former settler colony such as South Africa, one person’s heritage is another person’s trauma. For example, whilst for some, the Great Trek represents a monumental feat of bravery and endurance, for others it represents the invasion and dominion of the land by a foreign and dangerous enemy.

It is worth remembering that these issues are hardly unique to SA. The United States experiences similar ambivalence in the commemoration of Christopher Columbus on Columbus Day, which for some represents a fitting tribute to a noble explorer, and to others represents nothing short of the glorification of an arch imperialist with scant regard for non-European life.

Another example might be the commemoration of contentious political figures such as Cecil John Rhodes, whom for some is imagined as a great moderniser and venture capitalist, and for others a monstrous barbarian. The criss-crossing of various heritages and the mixed feelings they generate goes some way to explaining why Heritage Day in South Africa is not as straightfor-

ward as it might first appear.

History of Heritage Day In KwaZulu-Natal, September 24 has been observed as “Shaka’s Day”, in commemoration of the legendary Zulu king, Shaka Zulu. When the proposed Public Holidays Bill before the New South African Parliament omitted Shaka Day, the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) — a South African political party with a large Zulu membership — objected to the bill. A compromise was reached when it was decided to create a day where all South Africans could observe and celebrate their diverse cultural heritage.

In an address marking Heritage Day in 1996, former President Nelson Mandela stated: “When our first democratically-elected government decided to make Heritage Day one of our national days, we did so because we knew that our rich and varied cultural heritage has a profound power to help build our new nation.”

As alluded to above, the ostensibly simple notion of a day for South Africans to celebrate their shared heritage quickly became complicated when people began to think about what that heritage was. Clearly the cultural roots of a Nama farmer are quite different from the cultural roots of a descendent of Lithuanian Jews — and yet each has equally the same right to call themselves “South African”. In the wake of decades of segregation, state-sanctioned racism and unbridled violence, the logic behind celebrating a unifying national heritage was simple; the way to actually go about celebrating it, however, was not.

Eventually, in the vein of celebrating shared culture rather than focusing on cultural divi-

sions, it was an initiative by Jan Scannell (aka “Jan Braai”), Braai4Heritage, that called upon all South Africans to celebrate their common roots by having a braai (barbeque) on Heritage day.

The idea has had some high profile supporters, the most notable being Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, who in 2007 was made the national spokesperson for “Braai Day”.

After snubbing the idea in 2007 as trivializing, the National Heritage Council endorsed it in 2008. Tutu was quoted as saying in an interview: “We’re going to have this wonderful thing on the

24th of this month ... when we all gather round one fire ... Irrespective of your politics, of your culture, of your race, of your whatever, hierdie ding doen ons saam [we do this thing together] ... just South Africans doing one thing together, and recognising that we are a fantastic nation.”

Regardless of the debates and issues bundled up in the celebration of South African heritage with a braai, it is safe to assume that most working South Africans are at least grateful for a day off work. — SA History.

What is heritage?

H

ERITAGE is a deceptively simple idea. It can be considered to be made up of the practices and traditions that are passed on from parents to children, but it also has to do with what has been passed on from the family, community and place where people have been raised.

For example, heritage can include a family’s professional history, religious affiliation, or cultural traditions. Yet heritage also includes that which is part of the national consciousness. A person who was born in South Africa, for instance, has both a national South African heritage, as well as a more personal and private one.

Such a person might also be considered to have an African heritage too, because they were born on the continent of Africa.

Clearly then, there are different types of heritage. A country’s natural heritage is its beautiful environment and natural resources, like gold and water. Areas that are very special and where animals or plants are in danger of extinction, like the St Lucia Wetlands and uKhahlamba Drakensberg Parks in KwaZulu-Natal, are said to be World Heritage Sites because they are considered to be so unique that they are internationally respected and protected against harm.

Cultural heritage might include natural resources or land formations, but is also formed of those things that are symbolic of the creativity and livelihoods of a group of people. For instance, it could include special monuments, buildings, sculptures, paintings, cave dwellings or anything else deemed important because of its history, artistic or scientific value.

The style of buildings can also be considered part of one’s cultural heritage because of their specific type of architecture, where they are built or what they are used for. Therefore, Robben Island, the Cradle of Humankind at the caves of Sterkfontein, Swartkrans and Kromdraai in Gauteng, the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park and the ancient city of Mapungubwe in Limpopo

are all examples of South African cultural heritage.

When people talk about South African heri-

tage, they might be referring to anything from famous stretches of coastline in Kwazulu-Natal, to shweshwe fabric, to bunny chow. Heritage is

therefore something quite personal and changes from person to person.

Municipality’s Heritage Month celebrations AS South Africa celebrates Heritage Month, the Municipality’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Unit will showcase its services and products through various public engagements scheduled for September 29.

The Municipality will host the annual PRC Week, which is historically used to not only showcase our arts, sports and cultural services, but also provides an opportunity to promote social cohesion and unity within communities.

The week-long programme will kick off

with a launch and clean up at Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve, where the Unit will unpack the various programmes planned and what they hope to achieve during this period.

The launch is scheduled for Wednesday, September 19, at 9 am.

SCHOOL SCENE Library project benefits local school FOR the last two years, Standard Bank has been establishing libraries in primary schools across South Africa. This year, there are three libraries planned for the KZN region — and Sesifikile Primary School near Amamzimtoti was the second library completed in KZN this year.

RAK Events, the implementing partner for the Standard Bank Library project, got to work in the library a week prior to the event.

Ceilings were installed in the space that was allocated by the school for a library, walls were repaired and plastered and finally given a fresh coat of paint, and library related drawings were drawn on the wall by the artist.

The Standard Bank employees from the South Coast area volunteered their time to make the empty shell into an exciting library space for the pupils at Sesifikile Primary School.

The employees painted the unique “tetras” shelf in bright colours, they painted the drawings that were drawn in by the artist, they made creative tyre furniture and ottomans made from pallets for the learners to sit on, blinds

were hung up on the windows and a worktop was installed for the seniors in the school.

A Junior Phase section was created which included a cosy reading corner for the young learners. A section was also created for the senior pupils.

The new shelving, the chairs and the new carpets were brought into the library. Lastly, but most importantly, the fresh and colourful new books

were sorted and placed on the shelves.

The space was transformed from a dull empty shell into a vibrant library that excited and inspired both teachers and pupils.

ONE of the Sunflower Fund’s annual fundraising events, Sunflower Day, will be commemorated on Friday, 21 September.

Sunflower Day aims at gaining support for those diagnosed with life-threatening blood diseases. Members of the public can show their support for the day by purchasing and wearing a TOPE. According to the Sunflower Fund website, the purpose of the 2018 campaign is to draw people out of “slacktivism” and get mobilised and engaged around a simple action.

The Sunflower Day campaign is about heroes that choose to take an action either by buying a TOPE or registering as blood stem cell donors to give the hope of life to their patients.

Sunflower Day 2017 garnered the support of nearly 200 000 individuals who bought TOPES as well as 72 schools and more than 20 corporates through 14 events countrywide and 16 key partners. The fund managed to recruit 403 donors during the campaign period alone and achieved R63 million in media coverage in addition to trending twice at number four and number six on Twitter during September.

The TOPE that will be utilized to support the day is an affordable, multi-purpose article of clothing that can be worn as a headband, mask, scarf, cap or arm-band. Being broadly versatile, it can be used in a wide variety of sports or outdoor activities and is available in various colours.

OOKING is fun, and even more so when you have exciting ingredients and all the right kitchen tools to prepare a perfect meal. But there are so many handy gadgets available and, if you buy them all, soon you’ll have no space for anything else in your kitchen.

So, which are the most important, the must-have tools that every kitchen should have?

We rounded up seven of the key components to ensure you have exactly what you need to reduce the overpriced and overly quirky utensils filling your drawers and counter tops.

• Pressure cookers are making a come-back

and for good reason.

These pressurised pots can create slowcooked dishes such as stews and soups that normally take several hours in less than an hour. Pressure cookers create a high-pressure environment, thanks to super-heated steam, to cook food faster.

They come in stove-top pots with a manually sealed lid, and in automatic pots that stand alone and can be programmed.

Whichever type you prefer, just imagine slow-cooked lamb shank or a warming oxtail stew cooked in just one hour.

• A slow cooker is the opposite of a pressure cooker in that the food is cooked for many hours, with minimum intervention. This has its perks and is useful in many scenarios.

For example, you can place a leg of pork in

the slow cooker, along with some apple cider and spices, and head off to work at 7 am. Then arrive home after a busy day to the wonderful aromas of pulled pork ready to be served on soft buns.

Slow cookers are great for cooking legumes, large cuts of meat and can even be used to cook breakfast dishes overnight.

• A scale is invaluable for any cook but especially for bakers where precision is everything! If you want to be accurate, weighing your ingredients is the only way to go. A gram will always be a gram.

• A stick blender is a Godsend. You can whip up your own pesto, dressings and mayo, and it works wonders as a way of beating, emulsifying, puréeing or whipping ingredients together. The best part? It’s super small and

portable.

• Every kitchen needs a good coffee maker.

We’re not suggesting you cook in your coffee machine (although it can be done) but even if you aren’t a coffee drinker, chances are that when you’re entertaining one of your guests might be.

Whether it’s an American diner-style drip filter coffee maker, a stove top moer-koffie pot, or a high-end Italian espresso machine, every home needs a way to make fresh, hot coffee from good beans.

Ways to up your home’s security, without breaking the bank YOUR home is a space where you should feel comfortable. It is, after all, where you spend a large portion of your life enjoying down time, eating, sleeping, and creating many happy memories with loved ones. Your home should be a haven where you can relax and unwind, and not somewhere you feel under potential threat.

“We all hear horror stories daily of breakins, smash-and-grabs, petty theft, and worse.

“This can understandably cause people to lose sleep, especially if you hear a bump in the night or your pets react to a suspicious noise,” says RE/MAX Living property expert, David Spence.

According to a report by Statistics South Africa, the majority of crimes in South Africa involve “housebreaking” (when no one is home) and “home robbery”, which is considered a “violent crime because people are at home when it takes place”.

“These kinds of crimes are frightening because they violate our private space and the one place that we think of as our sanctu-

ary,” says Spence.

According to Spence, there are a number of things you can do to feel safer at home.

“It’s important to cover a range of bases to ensure that you aren’t worrying about your safety day and night.

“That is not the kind of stress you want to have at home as it can have a very negative impact on your life,” he says.

“There are many measures you can take to boost the security of your home, and your peace of mind. And while you don’t want your house to feel like a fortress, you can certainly create a castle where you feel truly comfortable.”

features, including night vision, motion sensors, sound and Wi-Fi capability. Typically, cameras at a higher price point might boast a higher resolution.

Many of these camera systems enable you to monitor movements around your home from a computer or smartphone. Even if you never experience an incident personally, footage from outside your home can be useful to neighbourhood watch groups should an incident occur in your street.

In addition, it is wise to have an intercom in front of your home so you are not opening your door directly to strangers.

2. Don’t forget traditional measures In South Africa, homes are generally equipped with basic safety measures such as security gates, burglar bars and alarm systems. In fact, some insurance companies won’t cover you unless your home is equipped with these standard features.

Be sure to check that all potential entry points to your property are secure. You might think that no one could get through a small window, but you’d be surprised how

many burglaries occur through even the smallest spaces. These days, there are clear strips that you can install yourself which are less unsightly than some other options. Or, if you don’t want burglar bars, there are companies which install lockable shutters that look great and protect your home.

With alarm systems connected to an armed response service, not only are you safe in the knowledge that someone will be at your property within minutes, but the noise of the alarm is a deterrent in itself. But an alarm can also be as simple as placing noisy gravel outside your home — something that will alert you when you hear it. If you have an electric fence, it’s also recommended to link it to your alarm.

3. Know your neighbours Security isn’t all about fancy equipment.

Rather, it’s about equipping yourself with all the tools at your disposal to ensure that your personal space is as safe as it can be.

If your suburb has a neighbourhood watch group, Spence strongly suggests joining as “in most cases the first responder to a crime will be a fellow neighbour”. All neighbourhood watch groups will have social media pages and Whatsapp groups to be kept informed of what is happening around you.

Additional considerations The South African Police Service (SAPS) recommends high fences and walls to reduce visibility into your property, and gates with robust locks. Solid walls are not generally recommended, however, and in some areas are not allowed by local councils. Statistics show that walls with a portion where you can see through are actually more effective as they enable you to see anyone lurking behind them. Security sensor lights are also a great deterrent as once a criminal is lit up, they tend not to hang around.

Dogs can also act as excellent deterrents, but, unfortunately, if you let your dog sleep outside you run the risk of them being poisoned to neutralise them during an attempted burglary. So, rather keep your four legged friend inside at night.

Spence says potential property buyers will consider the safety features of a home before committing to purchase, so when making your home a haven for yourself and your family, you are also adding value in the long term. — Property24.

Eighty-three year old athlete proves age is just a number T

HE Totalsports Women’s Race has become part of the lifestyle of Kingsway resident Hester Bekker (83).

“Running changed my life in a great way,” says Bekker. “At the age of 70 I was told that I had heart failure. To overcome something so huge I knew that I had to keep going and keep my heart and body healthy and strong.

“Running allowed me to keep fit despite my illness and health issues. I started entering the Totalsports Women’s Race to see how well I could do. I soon realised that I was very competitive.

“I really enjoyed the race and did really well. I entered every year to see if I could win in my age category and better my time.”

“I’ve taken part eight years in a row,” continues Bekker. “The vibe at the start of the Totalsports Women’s Race is always exciting with runners eagerly awaiting the sound of the start gun.

There is always loads of fun, laughter and chatter amongst the ladies and the

my best. My advice to all runners is to never give up. Be sure to do your best in every race. With God you can do all things and overcome all obstacles.”

The 2018 Totalsports Women’s race took place earlier this year in Durban, Johannesburg, and Cape Town.

The 2018 winners were Glenrose Xaba, who proved to be in a league of her own at the Totalsports Women’s Race Durban (Kings Park Athletics Track). Xaba claimed gold in an impressive time of 33 minutes 41 seconds. Jenet Mbhele came in second, while Tish Jones finished third.

In Johannesburg, Mamorallo Tjoka crossed the finish line first in a deserving time of 34 minutes 33 seconds.

Glenrose Xaba came in second, while Cornelia Joubert finished third.

The Cape Town race was won by Annie Bothma in a time of 35 minutes 20 seconds. Zintle Xiniwe came in second, while Aynslee van Graan finished third.

In true celebratory fashion, the Totalsports Women’s Race has become known for its live performances by

well-known South African artists. In Durban, Kwaito sensation Dladla Mshunqisi had the crowd on their feet.

Jozi runners (and walkers) were treated to a memorable performance by Sho Madjozi while Capetonians enjoyed a live performance by GoodLuck.

This year each entrant received a fitted Event T-shirt, a finisher’s bracelet and a Totalsports head scarf.

The 2018 Totalsports Women’s Race (Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town) boasted a combined prize purse of R123 600.

The Totalsports Women’s Race proudly supports PinkDrive, a NonProfit Company (NPC) that is committed to improving breast cancer awareness, education, and providing and offering free services to the medically uninsured across South Africa.

Tennis club notices THE AMANZIMTOTI Tennis club’s ladies league match scheduled for Saturday, September 8, against North Coast was once again called off due to the bad weather. The final league match will be played during the coming week and the ladies will travel to Umhlali to play North Coast.

The midweek ladies league is now complete. The results of the midweek league matches played on Wednesday September 4 are; first team beat Kloof by 8-0 and the second team beat Hillcrest One 6-3.

Final results were that both the first and second teams finished in top position in Division 1 and 2. Congratulations to all the players and thank you for their commitment throughout the five

weeks.

Social tennis will be played on Wednesday mornings again. Sylvia Edmunds, who emigrated to NZ, is back in RSA for a short stay and she visited the club last week. It was great to get together with her and also to have a few games with her.

Titans swim to victory TITANS Swimming Club’s Demar van Tonder (8) scored the most points at the Action Gala in his age category of eight and under.

The club were placed fourth overall out of 21 clubs that entered, and this with only eight swimmers. Overall the club won five gold medals, nine silver medals and nine bronze medals.
