A RAY Nkonyeni councillor has been accused of alleged corruption and awarding catering tenders to women in exchange for sex.

In the past there were also reports him selling municipal jobs.

The councillor, who doesn’t want to be named, responded to the allegations, saying whoever is making these allegations is attacking him personally for their own gain.

However, he feels that people must take the correct route when reporting corruption.

“As a councillor I am not involved in any tender processes.

“Whoever is making these allegations has the right report to the municipality.

“There are contact numbers for whistle blowers and people should make use of them,” he said.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality spokesperson Simon April has confirmed that councillors have no involvement in awarding tenders.

April said these will remain as allegations as they have not been proved or brought to the attention of the Office of the Speaker.

“I also wish to indicate that councillors are precluded from the tendering and recruitment processes and therefore it is impossible for the councillor to use these to advance their personal desires or interests.

“We would like to advise anyone who has evidence in this regard to either approach the municipality through the Office of the Speaker, the municipal manager or the SAPS as this is tantamount to corruption,” said April.

ESPITE warnings from Eskom to those who sell prepaid electricity at an additional rand or so, Murchison residents are paying more than R10 extra at their local shops.

Some homeowners claim the R100 prepaid voucher doesn’t even last a week. Earlier this year Eskom sent out a warning to people to beware of scammers selling illegal electricity, and warning that buy-

ers are also guilty of committing a crime because they should not pay extra for prepaid vouchers.

According to a statement from Eskom “ghost vending” and meter tampering is against the law.

“Cable theft leads to the illegal connection of electricity, which is dangerous because it can lead to death,” says the statement.

Ghost vending is the door-todoor selling of electricity vouchers.

The statement explains that ghost vendors use legitimate Eskom devices to distribute elec-

tricity vouchers, but they pocket the money.

The warning to people is to avoid buying electricity with an additional fee and report if they suspect a crime is being committed.

Eskom generates reports on the electricity purchase patterns of customers. Illegal electricity purchases are identified when a meter is found with prepaid electricity loaded where there exists no purchase records or corresponding purchase records by the customer on Eskom’s systems.

Sibongile Khathi was at home in Umzinto when an armed man was seen hiding behind a wall by a domestic worker.

According to Khathi the domestic worker went to collect laundry outside when she saw the man, and screamed.

“Thank God my bodyguards were in the house at the time,” she said.

The bodyguards heard the screaming and rushed to the mayor and shots were fired - luckily no one was injured.

Exam papers stolen from high school

Department of Basic Education spokesperson Sicelo Khuzwayo said the matter was reported to the depart­

He said the department will not speculate on who was involved, but they hope police speed up the investi­ gation.

“It is a shame that at this time of the year we experience such things. We only hope this will not have a negative impact on pupils who are writing their matric examinations,” said Khuzwayo.

No one has been arrested thus far.

THE Margate AfriForum branch is offer­ ing a reward of R10 000 for information that would lead to the successful prose­ cution of persons who sabotaged the water supply system to the town. The branch has also lodged a complaint at the Human Rights Commission against municipal workers of the Ugu District Municipality after numerous water pipes and valves were allegedly dam­ aged by striking workers during a recent strike.

AfriForum’s provincial co­ordinator Eugene van Aswegen said it seems as if municipal workers have taken control of the water supply network and are pre­ venting the community from having ac­ cess to water.

“We suspect that the water supply network is being sabotaged so that indi­ viduals and groups can gain from possi­ ble contract work. This and the actions by the municipal workers come down to a violation of human rights, because ev­ eryone has the right to access to water.

This is the reason we decided to turn to the Human Rights Commission,” said Van Aswegen.

Water back, losses counted THAMI KA­NKOSI

T the time of going to press, Ugu District Municipality was still working around the clock to restore water in all areas after many days of shortages, however, some high-lying areas in Margate and Ramgate still have none.

The cut-off stemmed from a seven-day strike by South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) affiliated Ugu employees who downed tools two weeks ago in demand of a Sanlam group scheme payout that had been deducted from their salaries over a number of years.

Some of it was paid out, but employees are demanding the balance, with interest.

The strike was called off last Friday after a task team appointed by the provincial government and Samwu reached a deal after negotiations with the municipality stalled.

The team comprising of six MECs was established at the provincial cabinet meeting last Wednesday where municipal manager DD Naidoo and the mayor Mondli Chiliza were called to present their case about the water crisis.

At a meeting at the Port Shepstone Civic Centre on Monday, Samwu chairperson Mthandeni Ngcobo said the union came to an agreement with the task team that employees will be paid before December 15.

A promise was also made that all other issues raised by employees in a memorandum presented to Chiliza a few months ago will be resolved.

“It is not only the group scheme

we worried about, there are lots of other issues that need to be resolved,” said Ngcobo, adding that the agreement will firstly be seen by the union’s legal team before signing it.

Briefing the media, Naidoo said no agreement has been signed yet, but the municipality will have to pay employees back their group scheme contribution.

“We are happy the strike is over now and all the striking workers are back at work.

“We have been working around the clock to reverse the water cutoff and now water is back in most of the areas that were affected,” said Naidoo.

some of the striking employees were accused of tampering with the valves and vandalising municipal infrastructure and will be brought to book.

Naidoo said over the years Sanlam honoured its commitment and paid families of employees who had died while still working for the municipality.

In November last year the group scheme was cancelled at the request of the staff. Staff then wanted their contributions paid back to them, with interest, and initiated strike action. The late mayor Tolomane Myayiza agreed to pay them back their contributions going back to 2012.

Sanlam was invited to a meeting and allegedly agreed to pay back the money, however, a few days later Ugu allegedly received a letter from Sanlam informing them that payment will not be made because the agreement had been signed under duress as their representatives felt threatened.

Findings against nudist beach Mkwebane’s findings follow an investigation on whether Ray Nkonyeni Council followed the correct procedures before approving the KZN Naturists Association’s application to make Mpenjati Beach a nudist beach.

Many issues were raised regarding the decision, which led to Mkwebane investigating and giving a report on the proceedings in terms of its constitution.

According to the report RNM did not follow the required procedures.

The council just approved the request before making an application to the Department of Environmental Affairs and KwaZulu-Natal Ezemvelo, as required by law.

The report clarifies that municipal

by-laws are amended and adopted through a formal process in terms of the Local Government Systems Act.32 of 2000.

In this case, the municipality simply relaxed its own policy without formally amending and adopting same, which means they violated and unlawfully breached their own law.

Chair of CCRNM Reverend Mike Effanga said the Public Protector in the report makes it clear that the nudist beach is not only illegally a contradiction of municipal by-laws, but also to national acts.

Another factor which the report speaks of is that of public consultation.

The public was given an opportunity to express views on the nudist beach proposal, however, the report says the

procedure was not correct.

It says the allegation that the municipality failed to follow a proper consultation process, and improperly failed to consider objections to the establishment, is substantiated.

According to the report the views of the majority, who ruled against the nudist beach, were not considered when the final decision was made and no legal and factual reason was given decision-making stages.

As a result, the conduct of the municipal council constitutes improper conduct as envisaged in section 182 (1) of the Constitution, and maladministration as envisaged in section 6 (4) (a) (i) of the Public Protector Act. The report said within 30 days of submission of the report on October

23, the RNM council should reconsider the its Municipal Council Resolution C127/10/2014 and the municipal manager submits an implementation plan to the Public Protector regarding the outcome after reviewing the establishment of the Mpenjati Estuary Nudist beach, consulting with constitutional Acts and overviews of the public.

Effanga said as CCRNM they believe the Public Protector has been unbiased in the report and everything has been substantiated for.

“We hope that RNM sees that the issue of the nudist beach is dead and they should just let it go.”

KwaZulu-Natal Naturist Association’s (KZNNA) chairman Christo Bothma said its is very disappointing that the Mpenjati nudist beach had

been approved and all of a sudden has been stopped, however, they will reapply.

“We are busy drafting a new application and this time we will go through the public protectors report to ensure that all legal procedures are followed for the application to be legally approved,” said Bothma.

RNM spokesperson Simon April said the municipality is still studying the report but said the municipality had previously said when the matter was referred to the Public Protector, that they will accept whichever finding.

He said once the municipality has thoroughly looked and considered the report, it will then make a formal media statement,

T seems the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality’s interventions in the local taxi disputes might not end anytime soon.

This is despite several attempts by the municipality and the Department of Trans­ port to come up with a solution for lasting peace, including the signing of peace agree­ ments in 2015.

Taxi owners have now accused the mu­ nicipality of failing to deal with an “illegal” loading zone, named Standerton, opposite Shoprite on Nelson Mandela Drive in Port Shepstone.

Last month taxi owners, who belong to the Bambanani Taxi Association, met with the municipality requesting the closure of the loading zone as they said it is allegedly operating in a non­designated area for tax­ is.

Taxi owners and drivers that operate at Standerton have in turn accused the South African Taxi Council (Santaco) of victimis­ ing them.

They claim Santaco members are doing this with the Bambanani Taxi Association.

Speaking on behalf of the taxis that op­ erate at Standerton, Vusi Mbutho said the rank will come to a standstill on the day of their removal.

They claim that whenever there is taxi violence they are always accused of being the troublemakers, while their rivals are let off the hook.

“Last year we were forced out of our loading stand at the Port Shepstone rank by the police and security and the Ray Nkon­ yeni Municipality’s protection services did not act,” said Mbutho, promising they will defend themselves.

Santaco spokesman Mandla Mzelemu said the follow­up meeting that was sup­ posed to be on October 20 was postponed due to the municipality needing more time to prepare responses.

He said the Standerton loading zone is illegal and must be removed.

“If law enforcement fails, we will do it ourselves. This is not a banana state where people just do whatever they want and get away with it,” said Mzelemu.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipal Manager Max­ well Mbili said they will meet all the taxi as­ sociations before the end of the month to discuss some of the issues and try to come up with solutions.

“Some issues had to be dealt with by the Department of Transport, now we are wait­ ing for the responses,” said Mbili.

ORT Shepstone Lion’s Club president Denis Meyer, past district governor Martin Rundle, zone chairman Jeff Smith and Lion Alastair Warman represented the Port Shepstone Lions Club at the annual District 410-C Midyear Conference in Ladysmith last weekend.

The conference was attended by several Lions representing 14 Lions Clubs in KZN. At the conference awards were presented by the immediate past district governor to clubs in recognition of outstanding service and achievements during the 2016/2017 fiscal year.

Port Shepstone Lions received five district awards, which included the Leslie Simon Sight Projects Award, Overall Public Relations Award, Ian Murray Project Public Relations Award, Club Bulletin award and a Louis Halse Award for being a 100% contributing club.

The awards were accepted by Smith.

The conference included presentations by various district project chairmen, sharing of service ideas and fellowship among the clubs.

Proceedings ended with a celebration-themed banquet that was well supported by all clubs present.

Care centre gets surprise Gift of Givers visit OMEGA MOAGI >>omega.moagi@media24.com A HOME for the disabled in KwaNzimakwe received blankets from the Gift of the Givers during an unscheduled visit recently.

The Ikhayalethu Home of Love Care Centre, which caters for orphaned, disabled children is in a small shelter in KwaNzimakwe which the Gift of the Givers said was hard to miss.

Bonga Nzimande from the organisation said they visited the centre by chance on their way to another visit in

Izingolweni not far from the centre.

“We were on our way to Izingolweni and spotted this centre. It looked dilapidated with parts of the roof caved in and when we went inside we could see they were in serious need of more resources,” said Nzimande.

“What was touching about the centre was that it was clean and hygienic and one could see the children there were well taken care of with the little resources that were available,” said Nzimande, encouraging local businesses and government stakeholders to lend a helping hand.

OVEMBER is National Adoption Month and last Tuesday celebrated adoption and adoptive families.

Adoption social worker at Port Shepstone Child Welfare Khozi Tshazi said there has been a decrease in the number of adoptions in SA. This is despite statistics on the Child Welfare website, which reveal that in South Africa there are millions of children who need families.

Adoptive parents Vida and Richard van der Merwe said they believe that adopting a child makes a difference in the world.

“I want to encourage every person to give their heart, life and time to a child. Please give them hope for the future,” said Vida.

Adoptive parent Kirsty Hardy said adoption was the best choice she ever made and there has not been a single moment she regrets.

She said her adoptive child, Ella’s personality matches her.

“We might look different, but we are family.”

She said adoption was not something she was forced to do, it was something she and her husband were happy to do.

She also thanked Child Welfare and court systems.

To adopt a child, an adopter should choose a social worker or adoption agency, complete a screening process and then wait for a child.

They then meet a child and complete the legalities.

ONSTRUCTION companies working on projects on the South Coast have been awarded at the Master Builders Association Awards held at the Mount Edgecombe Conference Centre recently.

Aveng Grinaker­Ita and Robertson & Poole Con­ struction were recognised for the construction of the Shelly Beach Hospital upgrades and the Maritime Mu­ seum in Port Shepstone.

Shelly Beach Hospital upgrade was named KZN’s safest construction company site for projects between R150 million and R300 million in 2017.

The project was also commended for being the sec­ ond safest construction site, in its category, across the country at the MBA National Safety awards Awards in Cape Town recently.

AGLTA General Health and Safety Manager Martin Joseph said workplace safety is essential to the success of any construction project and should not be taken for granted.

“Projects like the Shelly Beach Hospital are priority and we excel at workplace safety, making them tre­ mendous role models for others to follow.”

Joseph said the sites team’s dedication to the development and implementation of leading safety and loss prevention programmes was underpinned by

employees, stakeholders and developing contractors on learning how to be safe at all times,” said Joseph.

“Site management, led by Douglas Graham, pre­ sented outstanding guidance in safety and occupation health management, risk control, safety training, work site hazard identification and control, as well as safety programme innovation.”

Simon Poole of Robertson & Poole Construction said the Maritime Museum is an exceptional project­ that combined many specialised finishes.

“From the off­shutter concrete, polished floors, to the floating ceilings, Corten entrance structure and ga­ bion walls, all these combined to make a truly special building different to all others.

“The project was completed within the given time periods and budgets prescribed at the start of the project,” said Poole.

He said the project was a privilege to work on.

“An enormous amount of effort was combined by the client, the professional team led by Osmond Lange Architects, to get the project completed after many years of delays.

“Robertson & Poole Construction is proud to have been associated with this project and part of such a great team,” said Poole.

He said the final product will be the flagship for the Department of Arts and Culture.

Alzheimer’s and driving OMEGA MOAGI >>omega.moagi@media24.com SEPTEMBER 21 marked World Alzheimer’s Day, and people and organisations all over the world combined efforts to raise awareness about the disease.

A pertinent issue among Alzheimer sufferers is when to stop driving as while patients pose a threat to themselves and road users after being diagnosed, giving up the independence of driving is often a laden decision.

Mbango Valley Nursing Sister Sandy Mitchell also runs the Alzheimer’s, Dementia Support Group for the lower South Coast and says while in most cases the first thing is memory loss and forgetfulness other abilities may be affected by Alzheimer’s and varied from person to person.

Other symptoms include difficulty performing familiar tasks like occasionally forgetting why you came into a room or what you planned to say.

Also having problems with language, disorientation to time and place, poor or decreased judgment, problem with abstract thinking, changes in mood or behaviour and personality, a loss of initiative and sometimes feeling weary of work

or social obligations All these she said would affect a patients’ driving abilities. “Due to disorientation to time and place, people with Alzheimer’s can become lost in their neighbourhood, forget where they are and how they got there, and not know how to get home,” said Mitchell.

“We sometimes experience difficulty while trying to get them to give up driving as people are afraid to give up their independence. Families also do not want to make that decision,” said Mitchell.

In an article titled Alzheimer’s and Road Safety Arrive Alive argues that due to the sensitivity and the multiplicity of the effects of Alzheimer’s on patients and their families, the transition from driving should be done gradually working with the patient’s doctor and caregivers.

“Caregivers can reduce stress and increase their chances of success by relying on others for emotional support, transportation assistance, financial assistance or to meet other needs.

“They need to remember that family members tend to follow long-established patterns for making decisions.

“It is unrealistic to think that patterns will change when handling a difficult issue like driving safety.”

Port Shepstone High pupil does well in prestigious challenge FEVER REPORTER

OUTH Africa’s most promising entrepreneurial movers and shakers were celebrated at the Allan Gray Entrepreneurship Challenge Awards which took place this past weekend.

The challenge was aimed to nurture the entrepreneurial mind-sets of the country’s youth with a series of online micro-challenges that put 4 500 high school pupils to the test.

Port Shepstone High pupil Candice Langlois took part in the challenge, finishing in 166th position out of the 4500

participants.

This put her school in 29th position out of 100 schools.

Port Shepstone High spokesperson Annie Nurcombe said the school was proud to be part of the Alan Gray Entrepreneurial Challenge.

Co­ordinating the drive was Bonga Nzimande, who said the cause was something very close to his heart.

“Going to school with old, raggedy shoes could be damaging to the pupil’s academic progress because they can’t concentrate on their schoolwork be­ cause they are ashamed and lack self­ confidence.

“At the schools we have visited so far I saw pupils walking around in shoes that are not even the recom­ mended shoes because they can’t af­ ford them.

“That was heartbreaking,” said Nzi­ mande.

Nzimande and the Gift of the Givers team have visited two schools in Bhob­ hoyi ­ Nobamba Secondary School and

Sidumile Primary School.

“I ask local businesses, especially those in the taxi industry, to join in and support this initiative because these

“Mrs Loubser’s Grade 11 business studies class participated in the challenge.

“The competition was very interesting and pupils learnt a lot regarding

BEAR, the police search and rescue dog and his handler, Warrant Officer Rommel da Rosa, visited a pre­school in the Izotsha last Thursday.

Whole Da Rosa was telling the children a story about a boy who went missing in a forest, Bear sprang into action and searched and located one of the “missing girls” who was hiding behind a tree on the school premises.

The children were especially warned about stranger danger, walking alone and the dangers

of swimming without supervision of an adult.

It is important to remember that there is no waiting period in South Africa when someone goes missing ­ it must be reported to the police immediately.

With the summer holidays on hand, children should be kept under constant supervision at all times. Parents must ensure they know where their children are at all times. ­ Supplied.

KZN and South Coast is summer AT the end of last month the South Coast was privileged in being the host destination for the launch of the KZN is Summer campaign which is a provincial initiative to garner public interest in KZN for the forthcoming festive season.

Part of the day’s programme at St Michael’s Beach was a live SABC broadcast at the crack of dawn which was an excellent and effective publicity opportunity.

Before going on camera I looked around the area and it was great to see dozens of surfers relishing their rides and even more people getting ready for the weekly park run and on the beach, young people were happily playing volley ball and soccer.

The precinct was a hive of healthy activity which really put our area in a good light on national television.

The chilled essence of the South Coast really came to the fore.

The day did not just focus on the coast. Later on, we hosted the MEC,

media and the public at KwaNzimakwe which is a rural tourism development project also featured in our informative Southern Explorer Route Guide.

Being there was a pleasant change from surf and sea and the views from up there are simply outstanding.

In the mix were visits to clan elders, a sangoma and the impressive craft market, all within walking distance from the secure parking lot at the well appointed visitor centre.

What was interesting is that two citizens from north of the equator have built comfortable homes and live there.

One I spoke to is from the UK and in his words: “This is far safer and more pleasant than living in any urban area.”

Seeing what is there I think I concur - there is really a sense of community and people who know everybody else and they pull together so there is scant scope for baddies to do their disruptive stuff.

It was also an honour to meet with the inkosi who is very supportive of tourism initiatives and clearly wants his people to have a slice of the tourism pie.

Next week we are going back there to do a full potential and needs audit as a means to determine value adding aspects to the local area and capacitate members of this friendly host community.

So as summer gathers momentum, spare a thought for our lovely inland routes and take some great drives out.

One will be pleasantly surprised.

Arrest ‘water vandals’ ON behalf of the residents on the South Coast, who were provided with water from private companies and other benefactors, I express a heartfelt thank you.

Our budgets cannot be stretched for this extra capital outlay to Ugu. Note that Ugu contributed not one drop of water.

Ugu employees intimidated the drivers of these companies providing the water. Vehicles were vandalised.

The army should arrest these employees who vandalised the water systems. Ugu should dis-

miss these thugs, who should be imprisoned. Ugu should be managed by those qualified, dedicated and capable of administering this organisation.

I recommend that the householders deprived of the basic water right, which infringes the international health laws, deduct the basic water charge from their invoices for the period of no water.

Note also, a lack of water and sewerage can result in a cholera outbreak.

Hi Susan, in the news recently there have been reports of a dog mauling a six­ month­old child to death. There has been a lot of argument about this on internet forums. If dogs are such wonderful pets and “man’s best friend” how can this child’s death be explained away? My feel­ ing after reading this horror story is that dogs should be banned.

NOT A DOG FAN I’m sorry you hold this opinion and I have to argue that it is a thoughtless one.

I have seen the opposing views on one such news site debate about this recent trage­ dy. A number of people who understand dogs and humans have been focusing on breeders and ‘owners’ of the dogs who commit deeds such as this, while the anti­ dog side have been blaming dogs almost exclusively.

It is arrant stupidity to call for a blanket “banning” of dogs because of isolated tra­ gedies, in this recent case a Pit bull killing a child. After just a moment’s thought it must become obvious that we humans ourselves are responsible for umpteen times more murders of our own species.

Murder, culpable homicide and acci­ dental deaths at the hands of humans are a daily norm. For these murders we blame not the whole species, but the responsible and accountable individual. Why should we apply a different criterion for animals?

How many dogs have given their lives for humans? How many dogs spend their lives in our service? What about dogs for the Blind, alert dogs, search and rescue, com­ panion dogs, therapy dogs and so on?

These are not raving lunatics.

The Pit Bull Federation has released a statement suggesting that in their in­

formed opinion 99% of Pit Bull owners should not own these dogs. What does that tell us?

It has to be acknowledged that the breed is popularly sought out by unsuita­ ble bully types as an extension to their egos.

Pit bulls are also the dog of choice of the depraved who are involved in the dog­ fighting business. Of course this is a gener­ alisation, and it is not to denigrate the many good people who keep these dogs.

It must also be recognised that there are disreputable breeders who are selectively producing human­aggressive Pit Bulls.

The Pit Bull Federation of South Africa is discussing the practicalities of banning owners who breed dogs exhibiting human aggression, so that these people would no longer be able to show their dogs. The un­ derlying problem is not a canine but a hu­ man one. It is to our own species that we should look for a solution.

A dog’s genetic make­up cannot be eliminated and is bound to influence its behaviour traits. If people are actively breeding for aggressive traits and/or bite potential, or choosing to breed from dogs with a known human­aggressive propen­ sity, they are complicit, and they should be held accountable. If we have a sense of jus­ tice, they should be held responsible for the mauling or death that ensues from their selective breeding, together with the type of person who knowingly and irre­ sponsibly takes such a dog into his home.

Not only that: the dogs these kinds of people are breeding and homing are also themselves unwitting victims. An inclina­ tion towards aggression to humans in a Pit Bull is considered to be a fault, not a norm of the breed.

Another point that needs to be made is that the “nanny dog” is a dangerous fal­ lacy. No dog should have to tolerate being crawled over, climbed on, provoked and harassed.

Responsible parents should supervise the interactions of their children and fami­ ly pets and guide appropriate behaviour on both sides. The ‘cute’ videos of toddlers jabbing at the eyes and pulling at the jowls or ears of pet dogs are evidence of gross

stupidity. When stressed, well­adjusted dogs communicate their discomfort in ev­ er­increasing signals until it becomes nec­ essary to growl, snap, and finally bite.

Please, parents, if you have children and dogs, educate yourselves about cut­ off stress signals and general interaction between humans and animals. Also make sure that the interactions between your child and dog are supervised by an in­ formed, responsible person.

In light of the points raised here, Pit Bull owners in particular need to be aware of the importance of a full understanding of the breed and the genetic lines of the dogs they are taking in.

They also need to make sure that they are suitably equipped to be guardians of these powerful dogs, and that they are willing and able to devote the necessary time and energy to ensuring that their charges are properly trained by an educat­ ed modern trainer experienced in non­ aversive techniques.

The Pit Bull Federation of SA endorses force­free training with Animal Behaviour Consultants of SA or a COAPE SA trainer.

These trainers are not only expected to be qualified with recognized bodies but they have much practical experience under their belts. Selecting the wrong dog, failing to train or using a bad trainer all add up to a tragedy in waiting.

Many living creatures and inanimate objects have the capacity to harm or kill.

If you get behind the wheel of a huge truck, lacking the necessary skills and tempera­ ment, and in your ignorance and negli­ gence you kill some innocent fellow mo­ torist or pedestrian, it is you who are guilty.

The responsibility to ensure that the truck is roadworthy also falls to you. By the same token, you are responsible for taking the necessary precautions and responsi­ bilities if you own or breed a dangerous dog.

Most dogs are man’s best friends. Most of the exceptions are a consequence of man’s wrongdoings.

Thank you for support in difficult time THEY say that every cloud has a silver lin­ ing and while I don’t believe my family will find one behind this particular cloud, a shimmer could arguably have been found in the community that make up the little town of Southport.

On Sunday evening, October 29, my uncle was murdered in his home in South­ port. Like all others, it was a senseless murder. That night when someone decid­ ed to take a man’s life, he also took away a brother, an uncle and a dear friend to many.

Despite this tragic loss, I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of my family, to wholeheartedly thank Detective Henry van Vuuren as well as every single SAPS member who worked tirelessly on this case.

Not only did they catch the man they believe to be responsible for this heinous crime within 48 hours, but they also went out of their way to offer support and as­ sistance to our family in every way they could. We would also like to make special mention of my uncle’s friends and South­

port family from The Pittstop for their support and kindness to us.

Also, to every Southport community member and business who we dealt with that showed compassion and went out of their way to assist us – thank you.

We are often so quick to express our dissatisfaction with poor service, but without the excellent police and commu­ nity of Southport, this already difficult week would have been much worse.

A tale of two policies >> Facts regarding the Ugu Sanlam Death Benefit Scheme and how it unfolded HERE are the facts regarding the Ugu Sanlam Death Benefit Scheme and how it unfolded, ultimately resulting in the two illegal strikes which caused collateral damage to our local economy and our long suffering residents.

IN 1997, UGU WORKERS ASK FOR A NON­ STATUTORY SANLAM DEATH AND DISABILI­ TY BENEFIT POLICY: • Payment of contributions: 1% from employees2, and 1% from Ugu • The scheme paid out on death, disability and had a funeral cover.

In Ilembe District Municipality just north of eThekwini: • For a number of years Ilembe had a mandatory Sanlam Group Life Scheme policy for their workers.

• The scheme paid out on retirement or death.

• In 2012 the workers said they were unhap-

py with the retirement pay-outs and that they wanted to terminate the policy.

• In October 2012 the workers stopped paying contributions and the parties began negotiations.

• After three years of negotiations a settlement was finally reached and the Ilembe workers were paid out on the 30th Sept 2015.

COMMUNICATION BREAKDOWN: It seems that a rumour went out suggesting that the Ugu workers should demand a similar pay-out.

Thus implying, without elaborating, that the policies were the same.

Although both policies were underwritten

by Sanlam, this was the only similarity.

The representatives from Sanlam, Ugu and the Samwu were unable to explain the difference to the workers, so in December 2016 they went on an illegal strike that was to crip-

ple the South Coast.

To prevent the strike from continuing, Ugu management capitulated to the illegitimate demands and paid the employees R11 million in a full and final settlement.

The Ugu municipal manager advised council that this was the end of the debacle.

I warned him at the time, that by giving in to the worker’s illegitimate demands, he is setting a precedent and in future they will demand the rest, which is more than ten times the initial payout.

As predicted, it unfortunately didn’t stop there and culminated in the catastrophic disaster we are now all facing.

A SPECIAL little six-year-old girl fell off a second storey balcony on the afternoon of October 31 in Shelly Beach and died the following morning.

Ntando Soqashe had autism and loved being outside. She loved water, flowers - especially red roses - mops, brooms, different shaped containers and spoons. She loved “cooking stews out of mud”, water, flower petals and leaves.

She loved swinging and laughed a lot, especially when she heard “Three Blind Jelly Fish” and enjoyed the wind blowing through the leaves.

Ntando was non-verbal, yet showed those around her with her expressive eyes and the pulling of your hand what she needed or wanted.

Ntando did not bother about daily routines, rules and regulations made by others, she had her own.

She was beautiful, happy and usually content.

She went to Thuthukani Pre-school, our happy place, from when she was three years old. She will be missed dearly. Lord, comfort her parents and show all of us Your Grace and Mercy.

Seksuele teistering in die vermaaklikheidsbedryf (en elders) algemeen JOHAN PRETORIUS DIE onlangse beskuldigings van seksuele teistering teen die Amerikaanse rolprentbaas Harvey Weinstein het ‘n kettingreaksie veroorsaak wat soos ‘n vloedgolf nie net deur die VSA nie, maar deur verskeie ander lande, insluitende Suid-Afrika gespoel het.

Verskeie ander bekende vroue in die vermaaklikheidsbedryf het deelgeneem aan ‘n veldtog met die naam “#MeToo”, ander groot name het onder skoot gekom, en nog is het einde niet.

Oor die afgelope twee weke het daar feitlik daagliks nuwe beskuldigings opgeduik wat ook hier in SuidAfrika weerklank gevind het.

Die sportbaas Danny Jordaan is deur die oud-ANC-LP en sanger Jennifer Ferguson, wat nou in Swede woon, daarvan beskuldig dat hy haar 23 jaar gelede in ‘n hotelkamer verkrag het.

Sy het verklaar sy doen dit omdat sy geregtigheid wil laat geskied as haar bydrae tot die #MeToo-veldtog.

Jordaan het eers etlike dae na die beskuldiging gereageer met ‘n effens bizarre verweer.

Die rede waarom ek hierdie onderwerp vandeesweek aanraak, is omdat dit verlede week ‘n onderwerp van bespreking was toe ‘n vriendin van jare gelede en haar man, albei nog steeds in die vermaaklikheidsbedryf en op besoek aan die Suidkus, en ek in Margate in ‘n restaurant ontmoet het.

Hulle het geen geheim daarvan gemaak nie dat Suid-Afrikaners oorbluf sal wees indien hulle bewus raak van

hoe erg seksuele teistering nog steeds in hierdie bedryf is. Die vriendin, wie se naam ek om ooglopende redes sal verswyg, het my verwys na ‘n verslag van ‘n organisasie genaamd “Sisters Working in Film And Television”, oftewel Swift, wat enkele dae na die Weinstein beskuldigings deur City Press bekom en op die internet beskikbaar is.

Die samestellers van hierdie verslag het met sowat 80 vroue gepraat, en beweer die Suid-Afrikaanse situasie is selfs erger as die katnes wat in Hollywood oopgekrap is. Die rede hiervoor, sê hulle, is omdat seksuele teistering en geslagsgedrewe geweld die norm in die Suid-Afrikaanse gemeenskap is.

“Vir vroue in die bedryf is dit ‘n krisis.” Die woordvoerder van Swift, Zoe

Chiriseri, sê die organisasie wil nie self seksuele teisteraars en –predatore uitwys nie, maar vroue help om uit te praat, en om ‘n veilige plek te skep waar hulle gehoor en geglo kan word.

“Vroue het in die verlede uitgepraat, maar daar was geen kanale wat hulle kon volg om geregtigheid te laat geskied nie.”

City Press berig een van die meer ontstellende bevindings handel oor die aanmelding van seksuele tesitering en misbruik. Die meerderheid van die vroue in die bedryf met wie gepraat is, het verklaar daar is geen reperkussies wanneer ‘n oortreder by bestuur verkla word nie, want die mans in die bedryf beskerm mekaar.

Die oorgrote meerderheid van die vroue het gesê op rolprentstelle is daar geen mens of platform waarop hulle

kan steun nie.

“Indien jy uitpraat, word jy nie geglo nie, jy word geëtiketteer as ‘n ‘probleem’, en jy beland maklik op ‘n ‘swartlys’ omdat dit ‘n betreklik klein bedryf is.” Insiggewende bevindings is die verslag sluit die volgende in: bykans 67% van die vroue wat ondervra is, het “ja” geantwoord op die vraag ‘het jy al ongemaklik by jou werkplek gevoel?’, meer as 77% het instemmend geantwoord op die vraag ‘was jy al ongemaklik oor kommentaar wat op jou gemik is?’, 65% is sonder toestemming deur mans aangeraak, 55% het nie tussenbeide getree toe hulle ooggetuies was van seksuele teistering of mishandeling nie, en 71% het verklaar hulle het geen mens of kanaal vir ondersteuning nie.

Wat die afgelope tyd hier by ons gebeur het, tesame met die skrikwekkende gebeure aan ons nasionale politieke front, het skielik by my ‘n sielslamheid laat intree. En is in my geheue ingegrafeer. Ek is herinner aan die slotkommentaar van die Britse offisier aan die einde van die destydse fliek The Bridge on the River Kwai, wat ná ‘n periode van ontbering, marteling en verwoesting in ‘n Japanse krygsgevangenekamp, toe die brug wat hulle met bloedsweet moes bou, verwoes is, verslae verklaar het: “But this is madness, total madness.”

Die verslag het ook bevind die Weinstein-‘oudisiebank’ is ook algemeen in Suid-Afrika. ‘n Voormalige regisseur het vertel dat dit nie net met die hoofrol-aktrises gebeur nie. Hy het op ‘n keer uitgevind sy klank-ingenieurs het ‘n seksbedryf in die produksievragmotor bedryf, met ‘ spesiale matras en al. Hulle het aan die jonger vroue vertel hulle sou verseker dat hulle groter rolle kry indien hulle saam met hulle matras toe gaan.

Swift het ‘n aksieplan van stapel laat loop om die probleem te belig, met uitsaaiers en regeringsinstansies te praat en om vroue te help om toegang te kry tot berading en regsoptrede teen oortreders.

Hierdie verslag is voorwaar ‘n openbaring. Die kernvraag is nou: wat gaan daaraan gedoen word?

Die tydperk wat ons sonder water moes deurbring, veral die redes waarom en die ontsaglike skade aan die ekonomie van die Ugu-distrik, tesame met die stortvloed gebeure en onthullings aan die nasionale politieke front, het daardie woorde vir my nuwe betekenis gegee. Wat die saak erger gemaak het, was die gereelde besoekers elke dag aan die Watergat, elkeen met sy of haar eie menings oor waarheen die land, ons kinders en kleinkinders op pad heen is.

Dan vlieg positiewe denke by die venster uit, want jy moet teen wil en dank saampraat. Wat dit erger maak, is hoe die gebeure die goeie gesindhede en nugtere denke wat tot onlangs nog daar was, vertroebel het met ras-

sisme, aangeblaas deur stereotipes, randeiers en ekstremiste aan alle kante van die politieke/denkrigting/ ideologiese verdelingslyne.

Ons almal het minstens saamgestem dat joernalis Jacques Pauw die land waarskynlik ‘n kritieke guns gedoen het met die onthullings in sy boek. As dit nie President Zuma en sy bende finaal sink nie, is ‘n week sonder water bloot ‘n vulletjie. Die inset van die week, ongelukkig nie baie snaaks nie, kom van Ben du Toit van Amanzimtoti, wat dit iewers gelees het.

“Die gevaar vir Suid-Afrika is nie President Jacob Zuma nie, maar mense wat hom met die presidentskap vertrou. Dit sal baie makliker wees om

Ben self is nie heeltemal so swartgallig nie. Hy meen alhoemeer van die ANC se kiesers, topsktruktuur en invloedryke oud-politici begin hierdie waarheid besef, en ‘n vloedgolf van verset op die benoemings-konferensie in Desember gaan hom wegspoel.

Ek hoop jy’s reg Ben. Ek het ook aanvanklik ook so gedink.

Die juk wat nie skaaf nie DIE woordjie “juk”, is nie meer so bekend aan ons nie. Daar was egter ‘n tyd wat twee osse wat ‘n ploeg trek deur die landerye, verbind deur ‘n juk, ‘n bekende gesig was.

Mens sien dit nog in die ou Transkei vandag. ‘n Juk is ‘n gevormde stuk hout wat op die skowwe van die osse geplaas word sodat hulle saam kan trek aan die ploeg. Om jou juk op te neem, was ‘n uitdrukking om te sê dat mens verbind is aan iets of iemand. Om saam met iemand in dieselfde juk te trek is ‘n manier om te sê dat julle gedeelde belange het.

Jesus nooi in Matteus 11:28-30 almal wat uitgeput en oorlaai is om na Hom toe te kom en in Sy juk te kom trek. Hy het gesien hoedat godsdiens vir die mense van sy tyd ‘n las begin word het.

Godsdiens met al sy selfopgelegde reëls om God te behaag, het die mense van sy dag moeg gemaak. Daarom nooi Jesus Sy volgelinge om

saam met Hom ‘n pad te loop en so rus vir hulle siele te vind. Hy nooi hulle nie om aan te sluit by ‘n nuwe godsdienstige beweging nie. Hy nooi hulle tot ‘n persoonlike verhouding met Hom wat vry maak. Hy nooi hulle om Sy juk op te neem.

Destyds het jy ‘n jong, onervare os saam met ‘n ervare os ingespan omdat laasgenoemde geoefen was om die ploeg te trek.

Om Christus se juk op te neem, is soos om ‘n gids of ‘n mentor 24/7 van elke dag aan jou sy te hê. Skielik is die juk sag en die laste van die lewe lig. Jy het jou sorge op die Here gewerp.

Die juk skaaf nie, behalwe as jy eenkant toe, weg van God af beur. Die juk is sag, want dit wat God van jou en my vra is om Hom en jou naaste lief te hê. Die liefde maak die swaarste las lig.

Trek jy in die juk van godsdiens of stap jy deur die lewe wetende die Here is langs jou, bo jou, om jou en in jou?

RTISTS, designers and art lovers gath­ ered at the Margate Art Museum on Sat­ urday night for the exhibition over 40 original works of art.

Organiser, Anita Dumas said the artwork ex­ hibited is by three of her art students and 10­ year old artist, Zach Bormann, who sold all his painting that evening.

Dumas said joining the exhibition was Jeanne­Louise Broide from Nguni Collection, who exhibited some of their clay bead creations, which includes jewellery and beaded pots and Robin Broide from Ramsgate Clay Workshop, who exhibited some clay pots, beads and jewel­ lery.

Entertainment included drumming by Ken Baker and fire­dancing by Kalanit Broide and friends and guests were treated to wine and snacks while browsing around the gallery.

Items exhibited on the night can be pur­ chased at the museum until December 4.

Margate Art Museum is open Tuesday to Fri­ day from 8.30am to 2pm.

Idwala Carbonates Human Resource Trainer and Co­or­ dinator, “Joe” Mahadeo said the company started funding the phase one education programme at Izingolweni in 2016, finishing in May 2017 and June 2017 respectively.

There were 16 AET pupils, six of whom had enrolled for the pre­level one Zulu literacy and 10 for the pre­level one English literacy programme.

It takes one year to complete each phase or level in AET programmes, and the company works with the inkosi of the tribal area and stakeholders to set up the programme.

Idwala Carbonates aims to uplift the community to pre­ pare individuals academically so they become marketable to companies in obtaining better jobs and able to further their education,” said Mahadeo.

Mahadeo said a dream of AET pupils was to be able to read and write in English.

Discipline will be crucial for Boks SPRINGBOK coach Allister Coetzee says managing New Zealand referee Ben O’Keeffe will be key in Satur­ day’s clash against Ireland.

Coetzee’s side are underdogs for the fixture after having lost all four of their matches on their 2016 end­ of­year tour, and they are currently fifth in the world rankings with Ireland fourth.

While the Boks will still have the advantage of hav­ ing a southern hemisphere referee for their tour opener on Saturday, Coetzee has highlighted the side’s disci­ pline all over the park as key to the cause.

“The referee interpretation is going to be crucial for us,” Coetzee said.

“In any Test you lose momentum when you give away simple penalties that give the opposition team an opportunity for a driving maul or to kick it out ... we’ve got to make sure that the discipline is right up there,” he added.

In terms of where the Boks had improved on last year’s trip to the northern hemisphere, Coetzee was clear.

“Last year, this time I was personally worried about our conditioning,” he said.

“I’ve got no fears at all this time. I think we under­ stand that you can’t come here with a southern hemi­ sphere mind­set and try and play in the northern hemi­ sphere. We have to adapt.

“The physicality is a given, but we’ve got to be smart within our detail this week.

“They have good running lines and we’ll have to make sure that, defensively, we can stop them from all angles of the field.”

Kickoff on Saturday is at 7.30 pm SA time.

For the match, Coetzee has a midfield selection di­ lemma on his hands.

In all nine Tests so far this year, he has paired Jan Serfontein and Jesse Kriel as his centre combination.

That partnership has been largely impressive throughout 2017, but with Serfontein unavailable as he settles into life at Montpellier, Coetzee must now find a new No. 12 to partner with Kriel.

There appear three options for the Bok coach — Damian de Allende, Lukhanyo Am and Francois Venter.

De Allende has made five appearances for the Boks this year — all of them coming off the bench.

Lukhanyo Am appears to be up against Damian de Allende for the Spring­ bok No. 12 jersey this week.

With limited opportunities, he has not been able to get anywhere near the promise he showed during 2014 and 2015.

It has been a frustrating couple of years for the 25­ year­old, but given that he was the midfield cover from the bench for five of the six Rugby Championship matches this year, he is the logical choice to be next in line in Serfontein’s absence.

Am’s day in a Springbok jersey is coming, of that there is no doubt. Having been used primarily as a No. 13 in Super Rugby this year, No. 12 is actually his most natural position.

He certainly has the ability to run hard, straight lines and he can be the ball­carrying No. 12 that Coet­ zee may want on this tour.

Venter was one of the more surprising additions to the touring party. It is not that Venter doesn’t have the pedigree — he earned three Test caps last year — but given Serfontein’s absence, most thought Coetzee would turn to Lions powerhouse Rohan Janse van Rensburg.

Venter, though, has been drafted in to the set­up and he will be very keen on getting on the park.

Handré Pollard is up against Elton Jantjies for the flyhalf spot, but is also able to cover No. 12.

Accident victim completes parkrun

YAN Steyn completed his 50th parkrun on Saturday.

He was in a serious vehicle accident a few years ago and was in a coma for some time.

He was told that he will probably never walk again, but against all odds he completed 250km on the Uvongo parkrun route.

Uvongo parkrun is a free weekly

five-kilometre run/walk that starts at St Michaels beach and runs along Saints Walk to Uvongo beach and back. It starts at 8am every Saturday.
