MANY people either look forward to the festive pe­ riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc­ tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season.

As we get ready to wind down and take a breath­ er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was.

Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all.

The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you.

We’ve had an action­packed year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns.

To those people who are continuously going the

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto­ ries.

This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses­ sion coverage because you never know what to ex­ pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the by­elections and once again, hoping for positive change.

We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world.

The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breath­taking skyline together with a host of won­ derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa.

After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

HE KZN Lifesaving Senior Championship took place on Saturday, January 20, at Winklespruit Main Beach.

Senior lifeguards from various clubs braved the misty morning and rough sea to participate.

Clubs thanked the Winklespruit Surf Lifesaving Club for hosting the event, however due to inclement sea conditions, most sea events had to be cancelled.

Community service organisation needs assistance

HE Pregnancy Resource Centre Choices for Life is ready for the year ahead with a full calendar of activities.

The team is starting with training for Jerry Giraffe (early childhood development) training next week.

Zoe Bridge, the centre manager said: “With the reality that one in three children in South Africa are sexually abused, this programme strives to build awareness and a strong foundation for children at pre-primary school level.

“This programme is designed to play and teach young children from

age four to six family and relationships, body pride and ownership, selfesteem, HIV and Aids and role play.

“With the success of our undiluted programme at high schools, we felt something was missing something for the younger children, with regards to abuse.

“Our teams will be going round the nursery schools and pre-primary schools in the Amanzimtoti area to create this awareness and will continue with our undiluted high school programme through which we reached 11000 pupils last year creating awareness for love, sex and relationships.”

Other events planned are a Pregnancy Week from February 12 to 16, Pastor’s tea on March 6, Baby Bottle Campaign in May, a banquet on May 31, High Tea on August 11 and a craft market on November 22 and 23.

The campaigns are for them to fund raise for the centre said Bridge.

“We are always looking for volunteers for our centre, so if you’re interested, pop in, we are in Nelson Road.”

ROUND Table Amanzimtoti 85 is one of many Round Tables both nationally and international that strives for the betterment of the community and the development of young men within its’s community.

Many members of the Toti commu­ nity will remember a number of pro­ jects Toti 85 has done over the past couple of years, some of these projects include; Jannine’s Wheels, where members of Table campaigned to raise money for Jannine, a woman who was involved in a terrible bike accident and lost her only means of income, her transport, through the efforts of Toti 85 and the community we were able to raise enough funding to provide Jan­ nine with a new bike and get her back on her way. Toti 85 also assisted with the Pevancy to the beach project, a Sani 152 Round Table initiative which brought 76 cerebral palsy patients down from their care home in the Berg to the coast and assisted each patient in having a holiday and more impor­ tantly, swim in the sea. Table also ar­ ranged accommodation and food.

These are just two of the amazing projects Round table can do in the community and on a larger scale, but today Round Table Toti 85 is asking you for help. For the second time in the

past two years the Toti 85 club house is needing table relocated.

Kevin Fleiner Treasurer of Toti85 said: “Amanzimtoti Sports Centre [Hutchinson Park] has graciously of­ fered to provide us with a plot of land as a permanent home for the club house, but costs are high, and the orga­ nisation needs your help to make this move possible.

The clubhouse was graciously do­ nated to us by Marty from M­Projects approximately 10 years ago when Toti 85 was left homeless after several break­ins effectively destroyed the clubhouse we were utilising.

“Our target is R35 000, which will cover the entire cost for Table to the move, the organization is asking for any donations, sponsorship or good­ will that you or your business can pro­ vide.

“Help us carry on doing the good work that Toti Table has been doing since 1960 and ensure a bright future for the up and coming young men in Round table to go forward and make a difference.”

Heilie van der Merwe, a social worker at Mooi Hawens said: “The reason for the play area is that it will be something to look for­ ward to for the youngsters when visiting

Mooi Hawens. We would like to structure it in such a way that families can visit outside with their ouma or oupa while the children are playing.”

She appealed to the public to assist them.

“We are requesting jungle gyms, swings, benches or garden seating,” she added.

2018 Starts with a bang for local NGO The ladies who pampered the elderly ladies at 8 Londmond Lane ­ Gillian Moys and Nicole Myburgh ­ with one of the ladies who were treated to a pampering ses­ sion.

THE Elders Voice KZN started their new year on a positive and productive note as two new homes opened in Amanzimtoti for the elderly.

This comes after the opening of their first home in Lomond Lane that was full within hours, which now gives them a total of six houses to care for the elderly.

The NGO saw the opening of four homes in 2017 and has set a goal of opening up six more homes this year. With the help of the community they believe this goal is achievable.

KZN Joanne Mocke Herbst said: “The NGO is reliant on community support and we get no external funding.

“We have realised there is very little support and availability for the Sassa pensioners in our community, hence we know why the demand has been so great.”

The Elders Voice KZN also runs sustainability projects where the elderly sell some of their clothing over the festive season, which gives the elderly an income.

Health MEC on Nkwali Clinic visit K

WAZULU-NATAL Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo visited the troubled Nkwali Clinic at Mnini, near Amanzimtoti, where he noted a number of complaints, including poor staff attitude towards patients, the alleged turning away of a patient who had an emergency, and claims that nurses don’t respect time and recently left work early so they could be part of “Black Friday” shopping.

Dhlomo was tipped off about the alleged goings-on at the clinic by the local inkosi on Saturday, and has since taken swift action.

Following a surprise visit to the clinic on Monday, Dhlomo says he is extremely concerned by the allegations as they are contrary to principles of Batho Pele, codes governing healthcare professionals and the benchmarks set by the department’s ideal clinic monitoring system.

According to Hillcrest SAPS communications officer Captain Linzi Smith, bullying cases reached alarming statistics last year, and the SAPS is do­ ing all they can to curb this.

She said that cases ranged from petty name calling, to fights and even pupils being caught with weapons at school. Smith added that bully­ ing also extends to social media where videos are posted which also causes “damage” to the victim.

“Tell­tail signs of a bullied children may include children may not wanting to go to school. They may dress with inappropriate clothing when it is hot, etc., to hide bruises or marks.

“Their school performance may deteriorate or there is a loss of interest in school.

A child who has a bubbly personality may now isolate him or herself or become socially with­ drawn.

A child may experience a loss or damage of personal belongings, for example the bully may take pocket money, cell phones, iPads from a

child,” she said.

“Bullying affects a child emotionally, psycho­ logically and impacts negatively on their general activities therefore it is imperative that supportive counselling services are accessed.

“Matters of bullying should be reported to the principal and parents should not try and resolve the problem on their own.”

In terms of teenage suicides, Smith said this is as a result of cyber bullying, and the fact the child feels they cannot speak about it to any­ one.

“Parents should always ask their child about what is going on at school, they must monitor what their children are doing on social media.

There must always be open lines of communica­ tion.”

She said that if one suspects bullying at school or if counselling is needed, parents should contact the Childline crisisline on 080 005 5555.

“Trained counsellors, who work on a 24­hour basis, will render the necessary counselling and supportive services to children and their parents.

“Parents can also contact the Department of Social Development or Child Welfare in the area in which they reside for counselling services,” Smith added.

KAMALINEE Primary welcomed the new Grade R pupils last week. They were inducted in a special pro­ gramme in 2017 and were introduced to their new class teachers.

HEN Durban ballet teacher Kerry Simes speaks about the art of dance, her face lights up as she explains that dance is not just a sport, it’s a way of life.

The Pietermaritzburg­born teach­ er got her first taste of the dance world at age five.

“My mom would drive me across town every weekday to my dance classes and wait in the car for hours until I was done. I took ballet, mod­ ern, tap and national so it was pret­ ty time consuming. I wasn’t able to participate in any school sports as I was always busy with dance in some form or other.

“I moved to Durban when I was 18 and didn’t dance for a few years while I trying to orientate myself with my new surroundings and first job of waitressing, but I missed dancing dearly I started taking class­ es at a local school and it was then I decided I wanted to open a school of my own,” said Simes.

She began teachers’ training through the Dance Academy of South Africa (Dasa) in 2009 while working as a bar lady to finance it.

“I travelled to Pietermaritzburg once a week to do my teaching hours with a registered Dasa examin­ er and once a month I journeyed to Pretoria for a training session at the academy. It was in 2011 that my dance school, Le Dance Studio, opened its doors.”

Simes said her school started with nine students at a pre­primary school as an extramural and they progressed from there.

“We now have 12 schools and two studio venues we are renting. My aim is to one day buy a building to set up our permanent studio base with a dressing room, dance floors, mirrors, barres, the works. Maybe even a health bar and gym included. I am an absolute fitness fanatic.”

Simes described ballet as a disci­ pline. “It is taught in progressive sta­ ges through the years. There is no quick fix or short cuts to it and I think that teaches children the value

of patience, hard work and dedica­ tion. “It teaches them how to work with others, to take turns and to share as well as the responsibility of working independently. It equips them with the tools to get ahead in life. It requires a very strong tech­ nique.

“This technique is also needed for many other dance genres in order to execute the steps safely. I want to give my students the strong basis needed to explore other genres as well.

“Ballet builds strength and confi­ dence. It improves flexibility, coordi­ nation, posture, focus, balance, and memory and muscle tone. We pro­ mote a healthy lifestyle that the children can benefit from long after classes ends.” In terms of ballet ster­ eotyped as a female dance, Simes shuns this.

“That is a terrible stereotype. The strength, flexibility and muscle tone that male dancers develop would put even the toughest rugby players to shame.

their repertoire where they have to appear as if it is effortless and look as though they are filled with heli­ um, they do the heavy lifting of the ballerinas and make it look as if they weigh nothing.

“If you look at the male dancers in my favourite dance movie, Centre Stage, you’ll see what I mean.” She tells aspiring dancers to persist and persevere in everything they do.

“Work hard and don’t give up, no matter how tough it gets. The end result is well worth the work and the harder the work the bigger the re­ ward because what you put in is what you get out.

“Don’t just practice until you get it right, practice until you can’t get it wrong. Don’t set out to get a job just to make ends meet, turn your pas­ sion into a career and it won’t even seem like a job. You will wake up looking forward to every single day with enthusiasm, even the dreaded Monday.”

Practical car for fun drives T

HE clunky diesel Peugeot 504 I drove as a teenager was quite for­ giving of my steering inputs.

In fact, so worn was that old barge’s rack and pinion steering that its front wheels ignored all but my most vigorous wheel turnings, content to keep rolling in the sandy tracks of the two­horse town I grew up in.

The steering of Peugeot’s new 3008 is not like that at all. So sensitive and light is this electric power steering, that I be­ came convinced I only had to think of turn­ ing and the 3008 would already be going there.

Add form­hugging seats that are high enough for the mom­in­law’s ageing back not to bend and well­placed buttons to start or stop everything from music playing to cruise control, and one gets to see why the 3008 recently added the Drive 360’s Family Car of the Year award to its collec­ tion that includes European Car of 2017.

The judges praised the 3008’s superior ma­ terials and outstanding design — which beat off the worthy Mazda CX­5, Hyundai Elantra, Toyota C­HR and VW Golf GTD. Under the 3008’s hood, a 1.6­litre turbo engine makes an average 121 kW and 240 Nm from a very low 1 400 rpm. For comparison, the Huyndai Tuscon 1,6 turbo makes 130 kW and 265 Nm, while the Maz­ da CX5 2,0 makes 121 kW and 210 Nm all at higher revs.

Press the Sport mode and all that eager steering translates into very a confident driving experience, especially when one controls the six­speed automatic gearbox with the flappy paddles.

My city and highway driving got very close to Peugeot’s claim of 5,3 l/100km, which should be good for some 750 km on a tank.

AILORS participating in the first day of the Sigma Series hosted by Point Yacht Club had a swell of a time in gorgeous conditions offshore, with hand­ some CFM taking line honours in the racing fleet and Vernon Goss taking the win on his yacht Bellissima.

Race officer for the day, Greg Donkin exchanged his wheel on Alkistis for flags on the bridge boat, sending the fleet on a long haul north. The cruising class made their way to Virginia Beach while the faster fleet headed to Umhlanga.

Leading the big boys, Pat Boase on CFM had nearly 10 minutes on second placed Gregg Hurter on Bellatrix.

Boase steamed ahead after the top three yachts were closely bunched at the turning buoy set off Umhlanga.

Bellatrix had Argo FY helmed by Craig Millar on his shoulder for the first half of the return leg, but Millar

decided for some clean air, and veered further offshore which just didn’t pay off. Hurter had 80 seconds on Mil­ lar crossing the line.

In the one division L26s, Nhlanhla Phakathi led the entire race on his Ithemba while Brendon Humphrey not opting to fly his spinnaker, finished thirteen minutes be­ hind Ithemba.

Having a magnificent day offshore, the cruising class were sent towards the small craft airport with the buoy set 300m off Virginia Beach, Vernon Goss helming his beautiful Bellissima took line honours. Goss just managed to open up the gap after rounding the lee­ ward mark, he was neck­and­neck with Robin Hulley skippering Mafuta, Hullyer crossed the line two min­ utes after Bellissima.

The conclusion of the Sigma Series will take place offshore on Sunday 11 February. This Saturday the din­ ghy sailors will be taking to the water for the Bar Anni­ versary Mug Pursuit Race, and the fisherman will be tak­ ing to the bay for the fun­filled “Mullet Masters Hall of Fame”. Afterwards, they will be converging on the pub to celebrate Charlie’s Bar’s 65th birthday. All welcome.
