The annual Blythedale Beach Festival 2017 was a hit, despite much controversy resulting from the 2016 celebration.

‘I am glad it’s all over’ ­ top IEB matriculant A

GOOD mindset, a desire to do well and good support from parents and teachers were the secrets behind Sachin Naidoo’s success, he said.

Sachin (18), was Crawford College North Coast’s top performing IEB matriculant in 2017, with nine distinc-

tions.

“But, I am glad it’s all over. It’s been a tough year,” Naidoo told News24 in a telephonic interview.

“I am excited to embrace the changes set to come in the year ahead – all the challenges and places to grow.”

Sachin’s mother Hanusha said she was extremely proud of her son’s achievement.

“He’s always been a very hardworking child and very committed to what he does,” said Hanusha.

She believes that providing support and adequate time to listen to the needs of her son was what aided his success.

“It’s been a very stressful year.

“The pressure and emphasis by the school to achieve results made things difficult, but if you start early and try not to achieve too much at once, you’ll be fine,” Sachin advised future matric pupils.

He said he played some soccer as a stress reliever.

“It’s important to take some time off to rest and debrief, otherwise the year is going to be overwhelming,” Naidoo emphasised.

“Don’t feel bad when taking an hour - there’s nothing to feel guilty about.

iLembe District shows improvement in matric results NKOSINATHI DUBE and JYOTHI LALDAS

iNhlokozi High for obtaining 100%, Sinenhlanhla Secondary with 94.9%, Tugela Secondary obtaining 93.7%, Groutvile High School with 91.8% and Mandini Academy with 91.3% pass rates.

Top performing schools and its pupils are Nosipho Mthembu from Stanger Secondary, who came first in iLembe with seven distinctions, second was Emmanuel Mwandla from Groutville High, also with seven distinctions and in third place was Nkanyiso Mhlongo from Mpoqabulungu Secondary in Mandeni with seven A symbols.

HE iLembe District Department of Education received praise from various spheres and local organisations for its improvement in the 2017 matric results. iLembe’s top pupils received awards at the Durban ICC after the results were released on Friday, January 5.

The district ranked last for the past two years in KZN, but has improved from the 52.42% slump in 2016 to 64.91% in 2017.

This has given iLembe provincial recognition as one of the top performing districts in the province.

The top five schools in the iLembe and KwaDukuza Circuit are

iLembe District’s top five shining stars NKOSINATHI DUBE Nkosinathi.Dube@media24.com THE iLembe District has seen a major im­ provement in their matric results compared to the previous academic year and has pro­ duced a dynamic top five best performing pupils in the district.

Stanger Secondary School matriculant Nosipho Mthembu placed first in the iLem­ be District with distinctions in English HL, isiZulu FAL, mathematics, life orientation, physical science, life sciences and informa­ tion technology. The school’s pass rate was 75%.

Emmanuel Mwandla (17), from Grout­ ville High School placed second in the dis­ trict and third in the province in quintile three schools with seven distinctions in isiZulu, English, maths, life orientation, ge­ ography, physical sciences and life sciences.

Mwandla has received a bursary from Sasol to study chemical engineering at Stellen­ bosch University. The school achieved a 91.8% pass rate.

Impoqabulungu Secondary School in Mandeni produced the third top pupil Nkan­ yiso Mhlongo (19), who scored seven dis­ tinctions. He is yet to decide what he will be studying as he wishes to either study at the University of Cape Town or Wits Univer­ sity. The school pass rate was 75.5%.

Glenhills Secondary School matriculant Prathna Sewnath (18), placed fourth and obtained six distinctions. She has been awarded a bursary by Sasol to study electri­ cal engineering at the University of Cape Town. The school achieved a 74.4% pass rate.

Ashveer Singh (17) from Stanger Manor Secondary School placed fifth with six dis­ tinctions and was the top performing pupil in the district for maths.

The youngster from Novas Farm has earned himself an opportunity to study at Wits University and has attributed his achievement to hard work and prayer as well as managing his lifestyle. The school achieved a 77.9% pass rate.

Speaking about the pass rate he said they have strategies in place to improve the overall performance of matric pupils and will be starting with their programmes earlier this year.

Another feat achieved was that of the most improved school in the district, Sinenhlanhla Secondary School, is in rural Ndwedwe.

The school obtained an impressive 94.9% from a disappointing 56.67% in 2016.

HE ANC’s newly elected top six leaders, led by the party’s president Cyril Ramaphosa, visited the grave site of former leader Chief Albert Luthuli for a wreath laying on the lawn of the UCCSA Church in Groutville on Monday, January 8.

The visit was the last stop by the KZN NEC members after visiting the palace of King Goodwill Zwelithini in Nongoma and the two graves of former ANC presidents, John Dube and Josiah Gumede, in Pietermaritz-

burg and Inanda respectively.

At the event Ramaphosa said the new leadership acknowledge and subscribe to the legacy left by Luthuli and that unity in the organisation is not a choice, it is a must.

“We cannot afford to have a divided ANC in KZN as it weakens the entire African National Congress and we risk going to the 2019 elections limping,” said Ramaphosa.

KwaDukuza to introduce new waste management system THE KwaDukuza Municipality Waste Department has launched a new and innovative way for waste minimisation, which will comply with the Waste Management Act. The pilot project which entails waste being put into separate bins is currently being tested in the CBD and is designed to accommodate glass, paper, plastic and general waste.

KDM waste manager Wilson Mhlongo said that this new system will assist in waste minimisation in the CBD and will make it easy to recycle.

“As it is still a pilot project it is only found in Ward 19 and with the way it is designed we had in mind the vandalism factor, but we can assure you this is well constructed and won’t be easily vandalised,” said Mhlongo.

The project will be rolled out to more wards in the municipality within the year.

The society is involved in providing and protecting the well­being and safety of the destitute children in the Verulam and sur­ rounding areas.

SHAKASKRAAL author and freelance writer, Kesri Maraj, has had her first book published after years of trying to secure a publishing deal.

The book, titled Katchina, was published in 2015 and Maraj (30), also a travel enthusiast, said she fell in love with literature at a young age as she believes that reading one chapter of a book a day can improve one’s literacy.

Katchina tells the story of Bankipp Tai-Me, an American archaeologist who takes his students on an expedition to discover the mysterious past of the ancient, cursed Katchina box and borders around the theme of adventure and travel.

“After I matriculated I knew I wanted to be a writer, so I worked towards my first manuscript. It

took me at least four months to complete, but the challenge was getting it published as I did not meet the publishers budget,” said Maraj.

Maraj was forced to shelve her manuscript after publishing houses closed their doors on her and it took her nine years to find a publishing company that was willing to work with her.

Apart from writing Maraj has other business ventures, including canvas portraits and T-shirt and mug printing, which showcase another creative side of her.

“My favourite books are Nelson Mandela’s Long Walk to Freedom and Cry the Beloved Country by Alan Paton, and I would like to encourage people to believe in their intuition as it will never let them down,” she said.

Mandeni mum thrilled to take home ‘prem’ baby A MANDENI mother is overjoyed to be able to take her baby home from a North Coast hospital, having feared for her little boy’s life when he was born prematurely in Sep­ tember 2017.

Mom Thabisile Zama Zungu and dad Buhle Mavuso were a picture of happiness as doctors and staff at Netcare Alberlito Hospital gathered to bid farewell to the family, including baby Nkosinathi last Fri­ day.

Nkosinathi was born three months pre­ maturely, weighing just 920 grams.

When he was finally discharged from hospital last week, he weighed 2,91 kilo­ grams, according to paediatrician, Dr Strini Chetty, who practises at Netcare Alberlito Hospital and treated Nkosinathi.

“As Nkosinathi was born prematurely and doctors were initially so concerned for his survival, the first few weeks of his life were very stressful for us,” said Thabisile.

“Nkosinathi had to spend three months in hospital, including over the festive sea­ son. We are so happy and grateful to finally take our precious boy home for the first time,” she added.

Thabisile said she visited her gynaecolo­ gist for a routine six­month consultation on September 26, 2017 and did not expect any

problems. An ultrasound investigation, however, revealed that her baby had moved into a position that indicated the birth was imminent and she was advised to seek ur­ gent medical attention at a local hospital.

“I was in a state of shock and disbelief to hear that I was going to have to deliver my baby so prematurely.

“I think it was the saddest moment of my life. Nkosinathi was delivered at 8.05pm, just hours after we had first re­ ceived the news,” said Thabisile.

Thabisile says that doctors at the hospi­ tal were concerned that her baby had been born too prematurely to survive, and tried to prepare her for the worst.

Nkosinathi, however, proved to be a sur­ vivor and two weeks after his birth he was transferred to the Netcare Alberlito Hospi­ tal neonatal intensive care unit under the care of Dr Chetty.

He visited Thabisile twice before arrang­ ing the little boy’s ambulance transfer to Netcare Alberlito Hospital neonatal inten­ sive care unit on October 9, 2017.

“Nkosinathi must be one of the smallest babies we have cared for,” says Dr Dorning.

“It was wonderful to see him steadily gather strength to become the happy bouncing baby he is today, and to reach a

The Renault Captur has nothing to do with state capture, but it should in­ spire tender feelings in any bargain luxury car hunter’s heart.

RE you looking for an exciting small SUV with hatchback looks and MPV functionality?

Renault deems the Captur that vehicle, so we tested it to find out if it is.

On the design front, the Captur takes the sexy lines from the Clio and manages to keep that sexiness on a bigger, higher riding car.

The two-tone body colour, mirror combo works best on the Captur with the new 16-inch black wheels, LED daytime lights and rear privacy glass tint adding to its feminine look.

Inside, the Captur retains the functional layout of the Clio with a gloss black centre console and steering wheel inserts.

Revisions to the quality fit and finish are obvious and are commended.

The Dynamique standard kit is extensive but the leather seats and heat-

ed functionality is optional.

Standard kit includes park assist, electric windows all round, climate control, USB/radio system, navigation, multi-function steering controls and cruise control all coming standard.

Interior space is good front and rear, however, storage space around the cabin could be better for a car with MPV aspirations.

Our test unit had Renault’s 1,2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine credited with 88kW/190Nm mated to a sixspeed manual transmission.

The engine proved powerful in everyday highway driving with the manual gearbox being a bit rubbery in shift feel.

On the open road the engine noise proved very low also owing to very good sound insulation throughout the

cabin.

Wind and road noise is minimal at best and the Captur proved relaxing on a long-distance drive. Handling on tar is safe even on rough or dirt roads. We averaged 8,4l/100 km, which is higher than the 5,4l/100 km claimed by Renault and is a bit high for the segment.

At R294 900, the Captur 1.2 EDC Dynamique is good value especially when taking its extensive standard features into account.

A bubble for two

The Uniti tandem two­seater from Sweden offers five star safety and no parking worries on top of grin­inducing acceleration, with an interior that moves from press and pull to touch and swipe, enabling people to drive as if they are con­ trolling a car in a video game.

SWEDISH startup company Uniti recently unveiled the Uniti One, a friendly little tandem-seat bubble car that it says “completely reinvents the modern city car”.

Lewis Horne is the CEO of over 45 staff members at Uniti. He describes the Uniti One as “a high end electric city car designed for high performance in an urban environment with a focus on sustainability and a futuristic user experience”.

He said safety, sustainability, and scalability are the group’s primary focus areas. Their unique selling point is the Uniti car’s recyclable carbon fibre body and organic composite interior.

While pioneering, Uniti is not the first to use composite materials. That honour goes to Henry Ford, whose chemists combined 50% pine, 30% straw, 10% hemp and 10% ramie — a plant in the nettle family — to create body parts that did not even dent when Ford enthusiastically hit it with an axe to show the strength of composites over steel.

Ford said his agricultural plastic aimed to help U.S. farmers by buying their produce during the depression in the 1920s.

Horn said the Uniti One aims to use composite plastics to save the Earth.

The little car can stay ahead of trucks on the highway too, with a top speed of 130 km/h.

Horn said Uniti will start delivering the first one-seater bubble cars by 2019.

The bubble car project is being crowd-funded at the moment, with discounts for early bids, Once in production, Uniti will be sold directly online and delivered to buyers’ doors.

Horner said the company plans to also offer two-, four- and five-seat premium electric vehicles, and the One is now up for pre-order, with prices starting at €14 900, which translates to some R238 470 before import taxes.

Having won two titles, Hank McGregor will complete the dream duo when he joins Euro Steel team mate Andy Birkett for the 2018 FNB Dusi Canoe Marathon.

Dream duo line up for ‘Dusi assault’ A

NDY Birkett dropped a bombshell ahead of the 2018 FNB Dusi Canoe Marathon from February 15 to 17 by confirming he has got multiple world champion Hank McGregor as his partner for the three-day K2 championship race.

Birkett has won the Dusi K2 title four times, with three different partners – Jason Graham, Sbonelo Khwela and Lance Kime, while McGregor has also won the K2 race with the “Dusi Duke” Martin Dreyer.

With McGregor entrenched in his K2 partnership with Capetonain Jasper Mocké that has brought them repeated world K2 championship gold medals, few saw the Dusi combination with Birkett coming.

“I raised it just before the Fish this year. I was amped that he took it seriously and then got back to me and agreed to race together.

“He is such a great athlete with a phenomenal pedigree that I am so excited for this year’s race,” Birkett said.

While the pair have fought it out over a number of years for the various marathon titles throughout South Africa, the 2018 Dusi will be their second major outing together, after having won the 2015 Umkomaas Canoe Marathon.

Their rivalry has developed a mutual respect between the two and Birkett is looking forward to paddling in a boat with one of the all-time greats of canoeing.

“Hank has raced some great Dusi K2s races, but with paddlers that might not necessarily be specialist Dusi paddlers, so I am really keen to see what we can achieve together.

“We have become good friends over the years and I have a healthy respect for him.”

With McGregor living and working in Durban and Birkett based in Pietermaritzburg,

the Euro Steel teammates will have to plan their training time together, and give themselves enough time to work out the set-up of their boat.

“I have no idea who will be driving the boat. I am holding thumbs that I can,” said Birkett.

“The truth is I am happy to be in the back of the boat if the boat works well that way. I focus on enjoying my time in the boat, and with the way that the K2 combinations are coming together at the moment, I am really looking forward to the FNB Dusi in February,” he said.

The 2018 FNB Dusi Canoe Marathon takes place from February 15 to 17 from Camps Drift to Blue Lagoon.
