The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breath­taking skyline together with a host of won­ derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa.

After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka­ ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world.

South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy.

It’s been a year since his death and many ques­ tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri­ cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’.

Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some­ times comes to the fore.

The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli­ ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea­ son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

Drugs, alcohol blamed for murder ANDILE SITHOLE Andile.Sithole@media24.com

T

HE man accused of stabbing his wife to death was under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

This emerged in the murder case of Naeem Sheik (40), who allegedly killed his wife, Nadia Mia (36), at their home in Phoenix on July 29.

Sheik appeared in Verulam Magistrate’s Court for bail hearing on Monday, August 14.

In a bid to convince the court to grant the accused bail, Sheik’s lawyer, who didn’t want to be named, said Sheik will not interfere with state witnesses as he will be living with his brother in Bonella, Mayville.

The investigating officer, Warrant Officer Sukdeo Praveen, told the court that Sheik should not be released on bail.

Praveen said the neighbours of Sheik’s brother in Bonella claim that Sheik is a violent person.

“Neighbours said they know the accused and claim he used to come to his

brother’s house with his wife and assault her.”

Praveen said the neighbours also claim that Sheik became violent when under the influence of alcohol and drugs. However, the defence argued that the points raised by the investigating officer were invalid.

Outside court, the public and supporters of the Democratic Alliance (DA) protested opposing bail and carrying placards.

Mia died due to severe multiple stab wounds she sustained.

According to the Phoenix SAPS, the accused had an argument with his wife at their home in Phoenix.

Phoenix SAPS spokesperson Captain Louise Naidoo said the accused left Phoenix after the incident, taking his brother’s car which was later recovered by police in Wentworth.

Later the police received information that Sheik was at his mother’s house in Lantana Place, Asherville.

ranged a task team from Sydenham and Mayville SAPS. The officers went to the said residence where the suspect was placed under arrest.” He remains in custody - the matter was adjourned for tomorrow, August 18.

10111 Call centre strike resumes 10111 CALL centre operators will hang up their headsets, as the strike for higher salaries resumes with immediate effect, the South African Policing Union (Sapu) has announced.

Sapu general secretary Oscar Skommere said the union had been fighting a losing battle with police management since it temporarily suspended the strike almost three weeks ago.

“We hoped that a CCMA intervention would give us a good outcome, but we were not getting what we thought we would ...” he said recently.

The union was calling for operators’ salary levels to be increased by two notches, an estimated increase of R50 000 per annum.

An estimated 5 000 operators, represented by Sapu, embarked on the strike last month, forcing the SAPS to deploy officers to the 10111 call centres.

Weekend operations yield results WEEKLY REPORTER

A

MAN, arrested by the police after being found in possession of unlicensed firearm, appeared in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on Monday, August 14.

The suspect’s name is being withheld until he pleads in court.

According to SAPS Verulam spokesperson Captain Henry Kisten, members of the crime prevention unit were conducting stop and search operations in the area when the arrest was made.

“Constable Ngobese from the unit searched the suspect and found him to be in possession of unlawful firearm.

He was arrested and detained in police custody. The members were applauded by the station commander Brigadier Victor Dludla for the good work done.”

The suspect will be remanded in custody pending bail application.

In another incident over the weekend, members of the unit, under the command of Warrant Officer RM Naidoo, raided a drug den and arrested a suspect over the weekend.

The police recovered 38 capsules heroin and two Mandrax tablets.

“The members that made the arrest were Warrant Officer Naidoo, Constable Naicker and Constable Lokhai.

“The station commander Brigadier Victor Dludla applauded members for the good work done over the weekend," said Kisten.

In another operation over the weekend, the unit, under the command of Captain Mark Prakasim, held operations in the Verulam area and arrested 25 drunk drivers in a road block.

“Another 19 suspects were arrested for drug related offences and for dangerous weapons where knives were seized,” said Kisten.

Reaction Unit SA crime report TAXI COLLIDES INTO STATIONARY VEHICLE: R102 VERULAM MEMBERS of Reaction Unit South Africa were dispatched to the southbound lane of the R102 near the Verulam intersection after receiving reports of a motor vehicle collision on Wednesday, 10 August.

Upon arrival it was established that the driver of the Toyota Hi-Ace taxi was counting his day’s takings while travelling on the R102 when he collided into the back of a Toyota Tazz that had broken down on the side of the road. The driver of the Tazz was attempting to repair his vehicle at the time and suffered minor injuries after his vehicle knocked into him.

Three occupants of the Tazz, including a five-year-old child, as well as the occupants of the taxi, were not injured FLEEING SUSPECT KILLED: R102 VERULAM A house break-in suspect was killed after he was run down while fleeing the scene of a house break-in in Ottawa, Verulam on Friday 11 August.

Members of Reaction Unit South Africa were dispatched to the north-

bound lane of the R102 near the Ottawa intersection after receiving several calls from passing motorists reporting a pedestrian vehicular accident.

Upon arrival a man believed, to be in his thirties, was found to have sustained life-threatening injuries.

Paramedics stabilised him before transporting him to Osindisweni Hospital, where he later died.

It was later established that the injured man and an accomplice were in the process of breaking into a home in Ottawa when they were disturbed. In an attempt to evade arrest both suspects fled across the R102. One of the suspects was run over by a Chevrolet Utility bakkie on the south-bound lane. The force of the impact resulted in the man landing on the north-bound lane.

The second suspect fled the scene leaving his critically injured accomplice bleeding on the roadside.

UBER DRIVER SHOT DURING HI­ JACKING: VERULAM The public is requested to be on the lookout for a grey Toyota Corolla Quest with registration NJ 77443.

The vehicle was hijacked from Waterloo in Verulam on Friday 11 August.

At approximately 6.41pm Reaction officers and Rusa Medics were dispatched to the scene after receiving several calls from the public requesting medical assistance for a 22-year-old Uber driver, who had been shot multiple times during the hijacking.

Upon arrival it was established that the victim was on his way to pick up a client when he was boxed in by a silver and white unknown vehicle.

The occupants of the unknown vehicle then shot the victim three times, once in his abdomen, a second time on his arm and a third bullet struck him on his leg and exited though his buttocks.

The suspects then fled the scene in the victim's vehicle. The victim managed to make his way on foot through a pathway before he sought assistance from members of the public on Phyton Road in Waterloo.

Paramedics treated the man on scene before transporting him to hospital in a stable condition

DRIVER ABANDONS VEHICLE AFT­ ER ACCIDENT: INANDA At approximately 1.27pm on Sunday 13 August members of Reaction Unit South Africa were dispatched to Inanda Road after receiving reports of a motor vehicle accident.

Upon arrival an Audi A4 was found several metres down a steep embankment.

The vehicle was extensively damaged after it collided into a tree and several large boulders while travelling downhill.

The driver could not be located on scene. It could not be established if the driver had left the scene to seek medical attention.

A registration check confirmed that the Audi belonged to an individual who lives Waterloo, Verulam, however, attempts to contact him failed.

The vehicle was handed over to authorities for further investigation.

ATM SET ALIGHT: TONGAAT At approximately 10.52pm on Sunday, members of Reaction Unit South Africa were dispatched to a shopping complex on Gopalall Hurbans Road in Tongaat after receiving reports of an ATM bombing.

Upon arrival a Standard Bank ATM was found to have been set alight. Witnesses reported a white Toyota Quantum had fled from the complex shortly after the ATM was set alight.

The vehicle was seen heading in the direction of Verulam on the R102. It could not be established if the cash machine was bombed or set alight or if any money had been stolen.

The eThekwini Fire and Rescue Services arrived on scene and extinguished the fire.

Authorities are investigating.

Murder witness hospitalised ANDILE SITHOLE Andile.Sithole@media24.com THE murder case of a former police captain, Brenda Saligram, was adjourned at the Verulam Magistrate’s Court after one of the two witnesses subpoenaed to testify sent a sick note to the court stating he was being hospitalised at Umhlanga Hospital.

The case was supposed to be heard on August 7.

The witness was initially one of the investigating officers in the case.

The accused, Subramoney Krishna, also a police officer, allegedly shot his girlfriend, Saligram, at his home in Verulam in 2013.

The prosecutor, Musa Myeni, asked the court to grant the state another day “as the other witness was in hospital”.

Myeni had asked the court to call in both witnesses on one day to testify.

The defence argued that the accused

“had some funding issues”. Krishna’s lawyer said from the beginning the case was costing the accused lots of money.

The defence also asked the court to dismiss the state’s appeal and proceed with the case.

The magistrate told both parties that no one should “interfere with the judicial”.

The matter was adjourned to November 15, for both witnesses to be present in court.

THE peer pressure of engaging in sexual activities at a young age, drugs and alcohol abuse have negative effects on the behaviour of children.

This message came from guest speakers who shared the podium at a function to hand over shoes and socks to needy children at the Tongaat Town Hall on August 11.

Nonhlanhla Masondo from the national Depart­ ment of Health condemned engaging in sexual activi­ ties at an early age due to peer pressure. She cautioned pupils about STD’s that are “becoming a major concern in South African communities”.

“We encourage pupils to visit clinics and seek pro­ fessional advice and avoid being infected with diseas­ es such as HIV. Education must always be a priority for pupils.”

Masondo also told pupils who may have been sexu­ ally abused to report the matter to healthcare profes­ sionals.

Officials from the office of national ANC office and the Tongaat Parliamentary Constituency office hand­

ed over shoes and socks to needy Trubel Primary and Nkosibomvu Secondary school pupils.

The project was in line with projects under the Tongaat constituency office to accelerate develop­ ment in disadvantaged communities.

A representative from the deputy minister of health, Joseph Phaahla’s office, Cawekazi Gcasamba, said the mandate of the parliamentary offices is to make development accessible to communities through its projects.

“Joseph Phaahla’s office decided to give 24 pairs of shoes and socks to needy children from the two Tongaat schools.”

Ward councillor Zanele Khumalo thanked the con­ stituency office and Phaahla’s office for giving back to the community.

At the function, Khumalo told the Weekly: “I would like to thank the ANC constituency office under the leadership of Joe Phaahla for such a generous gesture of giving our children shoes.

“I wish such initiatives can continue in our commu­ nities so that children feel motivated to learn. We thank the leadership of President Jacob Zuma for bringing such projects to our people.”

Time to end the Eskom monopoly CHRIS HATTINGH

WHAT is the fundamental difference between a state-supported monopoly and a monopoly that develops in the market?

The former has the state using taxes to shore up its failures and is protected by legislation preventing others from competing with it. The latter is a business that has gained monopoly status because it competed with others by offering better services and products. When an entity is protected by legislation, it becomes a monopoly.

If a private company manages to attain a dominant position in the market, it is because that company has offered better products and services than its competitors — a monopoly can only be described as such if it is backed by force.

Eskom’s latest annual financial statements record irregular expenditure of almost R3 billion. The auditor’s

opinion points out “reportable irregularities”, i.e. fraud, and that Eskom’s procurement processes do not meet legal requirements. Irregular compensation funds, shady tender processes and the link between the company’s financial director, Anoj Singh, to the Gupta family, are all part and parcel of the Eskom story. Furthermore, Eskom’s long-term debt is now R336,8 billion — South African taxpayers are going to have to foot this bill along with every other tax imposed on them. This rightly outrages us, but nothing will change if we do not end Eskom’s iron grip on the energy industry, with its state backing and continued taxpayer-funded bailouts.

Instead of expecting Eskom to continue to generate 95% of the country’s power, South Africa needs a competitive energy market.

The market must be opened up so that independent power producers can compete with each other for cus-

tomers’ money. Whichever producer is the most reliable and offers the best service at the best price will gain the most customers. Those who fail to do so will have to close with zero government bailouts for failures.

Take energy generation, for example. If private companies were sure that the government would not interfere, they would feel secure enough to invest their own capital into modern and reliable generating plants. Private companies could both fund and operate t hese plants, and thereby create jobs. Those who offer the best packages will attract the best workers.

A decentralised energy market would encourage competition in every possible part of the system: electricity would be priced according to demand and supply, efficiency would increase as suppliers gained clearer knowledge of high and low-demand hours, and consumers would have a choice of

suppliers.

Because private companies would be investing their own money, they would have increased incentive to build the best possible generating plants and distribution networks.

With no government guarantees or bailouts, these private companies, in competition with others, would have to do their best to gain customers by offering competitive prices and efficient service.

The price of electricity needs to be linked to the people who pay for the resource — South Africans — not government bureaucrats who simply decree a price and then pay their own salaries as they see fit.

The trend around the world is towards less government control. The South African government could be at the forefront by setting the rules for a competitive energy market and then stepping back, allowing South Africans to forge the way ahead.

No one person has all the necessary knowledge to run an industry, never mind one as complex and important as energy supply and generation.

As the economist Friedrich Hayek said, no system can be as effective as one in which competing suppliers vie to meet the needs and wants of consumers.

It is crucial for the beleaguered SA economy that we have sufficient energy supply and generation capacity — we simply cannot run at a deficit and expect to create jobs.

The world is moving towards green energy, but whether it is coal, gas, wind turbines or solar, we need as much energy as possible.

This was only an appetiser of the beauty of the people who I encountered once the plane landed.

I have flown with South African Airways countless times and I am yet to meet a genuine combination of beauty and kindness in the attendants.

Once I was almost arrested for wanting to remain with my laptop.

It could be just my bad luck locally.

This is what I am saying.

One does not need to be rude to be a feminist, or to fight for justice.

The examples of Mbete and Khoza show that even in that calm demeanour can rest the decisive spirit that can move mountains.

We often talk of beauty without brains as a disaster but so is beauty without ubuntu.

AUGUST is the month that we officially recognise as Women’s Month.

Many men grumble that all months are women’s month in any case.

I guess there is a bit of truth in that, but that is an argument for another year.

Several events have made this month an interesting month in many ways.

The decision by the speaker of Parliament, Baleka Mbete, to allow for a secret ballot in the botched vote of no confidence stands out as a bold move by a strong woman.

Leading to that motion, the criticism of the president by MP Makhosi Khoza will be remembered as another bold move by a politician.

This can be seen by how many other disillusioned ANC members of Parliament voted for the motion from the safety of the secret ballot.

We applaud all these achievements where women have stood up and have been counted for their re-

silience, determination and love for the country.

However, in a month like this, there is also a lot of flattery going around aimed at women. I have one or two issues to whisper in the ears of our beautiful women.

If you openly ask most men coming into South Africa what it is that captures their attention the first time they set foot here, a great number will tell you about the infrastructure, but the few will tell you the truth. It is the beautiful women across the races.

This is not to say that most men are coming from countries where women are not beautiful.

Beauty has many dimensions and proportions, both in quality and in quantity.

What astonishes most men, especially those coming to this beautiful land for the first time, is the balance between these two, quality and quantity.

and some politicians thrive on racial and ethnic divisions as part of their political grandstanding.

Furthermore, all this talk about social cohesion and ubuntu is nothing but window dressing when apartheid-era quotas are still applied and South Africans of Indian origin continue being marginalised.

There were many South Africans of Indian origin who laid down their lives in destroying the apartheid government but it seems all is forgotten now.

Lindeni Ngidi in her novice race came first in the open ladies and 40+ category run.

Vukani Maphumulo finished second in the 35+ category in 38.28 while jun­ iors Beauty Msomi and Pretty Ngidi finished second and third respectively in the female 10km run. Enock Menzi made a welcome return with 40.48

ahead of Paul Mthembu in 50.44. Alan Govender posted a sub­one hour 58.20 finish. Walker, Ronnie Rangasamy eased in 1.09 ahead of novice in his first club run Amith Samsunder in 1.14.

Pam Zwane made a quick dash in 1.14, with Beauty Msomi and Dominic following. Cynthia Zondi made it a weekend double with the PVAC and KwaDukuza Women’s Day and Autism Challenge, both 10km runs. Clara Ami­ na, another of VAC novices scooped walkers’ second position in the female

walk in 1.28. Dasen Naidoo completed team VAC participation in 1.38 fol­ lowed by Jaya Kisten. VAC was also supported by breakfast team Brenda peters and Joey Chetty.

Maphumulo Local Municipality Proposed Construction of Okhukho Road Infrastructure, KwaZulu-Natal Notice is given in terms of Regulation 41(c) published under the National Environmental Management Act, 1998 (Act No. 107 of 1998) (as amended) of the intention to carry out listed activities requiring environmental authorization.

The Maphumulo Local Municipality is proposing to upgrade the existing Okhukho Road from gravel to blacktop and to construct stream crossing facilities along the road. The proposed project is located within Ward 4 of Maphumulo Local Municipality within the Woza Traditional Council.

The proposed construction of stream crossing structures requires the environmental authorization in terms of the gazetted Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Regulations of 2014. Following a Basic Assessment process, the Municipality will apply for the authorization from the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs.

Khapheni Consulting has been appointed as the Environmental Assessment Practitioner responsible for the environmental authorization process. To register as an interested and affected party, please submit your full contact details and your interest in the project by 18 September 2017.

AN exciting soccer tournament was held at the Dawncrest Astro Soccer Fields on August 5, the fifth of its kind held since the opening.

Twenty teams from across Durban and surrounds, including Durban North, Phoenix, Tongaat and Ballito participated.

The organisers would like to thank the teams for good turnout and sportsmanship shown throughout the day.

It was also great to see the local community Verulam coming out in their numbers to support this event.

A big thank you to eNanda Hardware for sponsoring the prize money of R5 000 ensuring the winners and runners-up did not go home empty handed.

After a day of tough competition, Railways and the local team - The Lawyers - played a thrilling final game.

The Tongaat team, Railways took the final honors and were declared champions.

Congratulations to them and the other teams who entered.
