MANY people either look forward to the festive pe­ riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc­ tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season.

As we get ready to wind down and take a breath­ er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was.

Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all.

This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses­ sion coverage because you never know what to ex­ pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the by­elections and once again, hoping for positive change.

MoP hosts sports day

House­ mothers at Mother of Peace compete in a fun race at the sport’s day.

HE Mother of Peace Pre-primary and primary school held their annual sports day on Friday, 26

May. The day began with a pre-primary parents workshop, which focused on how to help children achieve their milestones.

Primary school parents looked through the children’s work and dis-

cussed progress with the teachers.

The good turn-out and beautiful weather was the perfect boost for the sports day that followed after the formalities ended.

The children entered into the spirit of the occasion singing the national anthem.

Pupils from 18 months to Grade 3 competed in races, including bean

bag, teddy bear and dress-up for the pre-primary little ones, while longdistance, sprints, sack races, an obstacle course and three-legged races were completed by the primary school children.

There was an entertaining race three-legged race - for the pre-primary moms and a sprint race for the primary school mom’s that was filled with

high energy and laughter.

The day ended with the presentation of certificates and medals.

MoP Pre-primary and primary school would like to thank the community for donating their previously loved medals and trophies which were re-used as prizes.

ng ki Ta innovative marketing DURBAN is set to be marketed as a destina­ tion of choice to the international market, to attract tourists to the City and grow the local economy.

This will be achieved firstly through Dur­ ban Tourism extending its partnership with the Sharks Rugby team for three years fol­ lowing the tabling of a report at full council on May 25.

The report outlined the strategic benefits for the City emanating from this partnership which commences from 1 July. These bene­ fits include the partnership presenting Dur­ ban Tourism with marketing opportunities through which potential tourists can be en­ gaged as rugby is a sport that is watched in most of the key source markets.

Also, the “away” matches, particularly in Europe and Australia, will afford eThekwini the opportunity to conduct in­market acti­ vation programmes through which Durban can be profiled as a tourist attraction by en­ gaging potential visitors. The agreement in­ cludes the Durban logo being placed on the players’ jerseys for the season with the esti­ mated media value of the placement being R25 million. The report tasks the City Manag­ er, Sipho Nzuza, through the (acting) Head of Business Support, Tourism and Markets Unit, Thulani Nzama, to negotiate benefits and rights to leverage the destination and profile Durban through the KZN Sharks Part­ nership. Nzuza must conclude the contract with the Sharks before the end of June.

Meanwhile, full council approved a report motivating for Durban Tourism to partner

with the Discovery Channel UK for two years starting from July. This would yield positive benefits through positing Durban as a global City to international visitors and the tourism industry. More information would also be made available to attract the tourist market in Eastern Europe and Asia, the citizens of whom are interested in sport, lifestyle and culture. They also have the financial means to take holidays to destinations like Durban.

The digital online component will have a dedicated link to the Durban Tourism web­ site through which viewers can access eThekwini’s content pages and an electronic Durban City guide. The report authorises the Nzuza, through the (acting) Head of Busi­ ness Support, Tourism and Markets Unit, Thulani Nzama, to negotiate further the benefits and rights to leverage the destina­ tion profile of Durban through this global partnership with Discovery.Nzama will also report back to the economic development and planning committee on the outcomes of partnering with Discovery.

Councillor Nkosenhle Madlala welcomed the two reports saying Durban Tourism has done the City proud. “They have come up with programmes to attract tourists to the City. These efforts have been recognises by both provincial and national government as they have a positive economic impact not just for our City but the province and country as a whole.”

Madlala said these initiatives will also support the national programme of “five in five” which seeks to attract five million visi­

tors to SA in the next five years. “We are aim­ ing to attract one million of those five million visitors to eThekwini. We want to achieve this sooner than the five years projected. We believe these programmes will be catalysts to help us achieve this goal.”

ETHEKWINI BIODIVERSITY STEWARDSHIP POLICY ADOPTED A report was tabled at eThekwini Munici­ pality’s full council meeting outlining the ap­ proval of the eThekwini Biodiversity Stew­ ardship Policy. The Policy stems from the na­ tional and provincial legislation and the City’s Integrated Development Plan.

The report states that biodiversity stew­ ardship is a voluntary approach of entering into agreements with private and communal landowners to protect and manage land in biodiversity priority areas in order to ensure a continuous supply of ecosystem services such as water provision, recreational services and food production.

Biodiversity stewardship is a cost effec­ tive approach that assist all levels of govern­ ment to fulfill their mandate of conserving biodiversity outside of state­owned, pro­ tected areas.

The reports states that the policy does not have direct financial implications. How­ ever, specific projects from the policy may have budget implications which will be bud­ geted for in the yearly budgetary process.

The policy will be the “adopted policy” for all biodiversity stewardship projects under­ taken by eThekwini Municipal Departments. ­ Supplied.

STEERING committee consisting of parents whose children attend schools in and outside our area, community leaders and educational leaders made a “courageous” proposal to businessmen, school governing body representatives, teachers and parents on Tuesday, May 30.

The proposal, called the “Trust Toti Schools” initiative, aims to amalgamate three local high schools into one in an attempt to build and strengthen the community and offer the kind of education that will prevent local children from leaving the area to attend

schools elsewhere.

Dr Dudley Ford, chairperson of steering committee, welcomed attendees on behalf of the committee.

Presenting the proposal Michael Prashma said: “The committee was set up in May last year and has come almost full circle.”

The idea came about in a conversation between Prashma, a parent with children attending schools outside and in the area, and Andrew Ellis, a parent with primary-school children concerned that his children will possibly have to attend high school outside the area.

“We have such amazing children, wonderful talent that have been creat-

Asked whether she would you con­ sider giving the proposal her support, Lemmer said she believed that some­ thing needs to be done to keep our chil­ dren and families in our community.

“To date we have not been success­ ful in keeping our children in our com­ munity. This is now also affecting our primary schools.

Parents of primary­school pupils are told that if their children attend a primary school in the Durban area, they would have a gateway to the high schools.”

Report crime, stop crime A CRIME statistic is only a crime stat once it has been reported to SAPS. “It appears there are a large number of crimes that simply go unreported because of the nature of the crime or because of a lack of confidence in the system,” said Ivan Gov­ ender, district manager KZN for Fidelity ADT. He says selective reporting of crime is problematic as it contributes to the dissemi­ nation of misinformation around crime, rath­ er than accurate and contextualised infor­ mation which the SAPS and private security

Lemmer saw the possible benefit of the proposal that all resources can be pulled together, teachers can be util­ ised across the board for all three cam­ puses, allowing better opportunities for pupils and better facilities at each campus, a state­of­the­art laboratory, art and culture venues and sport facili­ ties that will to provide the same op­ portunities which the bigger public schools and private schools have.

Pupils would have the opportunity to compete against the top schools in South Africa and would not have to spend about one­and­a­half to two hours travelling to Durban schools.

Addressing the possible negatives the principal said: “None of this will be easy or straight forward. There will be intense planning required for the logis­ tics to work. The challenges to put this in place and have the buy­in of all par­ ties are huge, however it can be done.”

EDL: I was asked to join the Trust Toti Schools initiative probably for my expert­ ise. I have walked the education road from being a principal for 14 years, training prin­ cipals in an advanced course on education leadership and management, and current­ ly I am lecturing Intermediate Phase stu­ dents at VC Durban North. I am also the provincial executive officer for the Govern­ ing Body Foundation, a foundation that assists SGBs in good governance and man­ agement of schools.

TS: You said you had a vested interest in the community, explain why?

EDL: I have spent 40 very happy years as a resident in Toti, and while I no longer live here, it will always be very close to my heart. Most of the Toti schools are member schools of the GBF, and as such I have a vested interest in them remaining the good schools they are, providing excellent edu­ cation to Toti children.

There is increasing pressure on schools to perform, to the extent that performance agreements are put on the table for princi­ pals to sign. I think it is an open secret that

“People are not only relocating their children, but their entire families and this affects our property prices and local businesses. “We have great schools in Amanzimtoti, but I asked myself how could it be better?” Prashma said. The committee’s vision is to build one school, possibly called “Kings College” with three campuses.

The proposal calls for Amanzimtoti High to be the all-girls campus, Kingsway High, an all-boys campus and Kuswag a co-ed, all with shared stateof-the-art facilities.

The vision is to have the most interested parents contribute hugely to the success of any school.

It has become very clear that Durban schools angle outside their own waters for the kind of parent that would ensure their schools flourish, be it to the detriment of other schools.

When we moved to Toti in 1975 it was a buzzing town, growing exponentially, and schools could hardly accommodate the numbers knocking at their doors. In the life­cycle of any town or suburb there is a rise and fall in numbers. Toti is no different.

I think we are out of the fall and could go into a rise that would equal the past.

As a community we should take hands and support each other. Toti has amazing possibilities and potential, and we should embrace it. The very fact that outside schools come skimming our area to boost their numbers bears testimony to the qual­ ity we have on offer.

TS: In your experience will it be beneficial for schools to amalgamate?

EDL: Unreservedly, yes.

TS: What are the possible negatives?

EDL: I don’t think there are too many nega­ tives once a community has bought into the essence of what can be achieved. Gaut­ eng went into a system of ‘twinning’, which has created negativity towards any form of ‘working together’. An amalgamation is not the same. It is a given that change is

sought-after school campuses, the best teachers, sports coaches, coaching and facilities, the best resources, a boarding establishment, increased buy-in, therefore investment from the local community, bigger attendances at school events by the community and greater ownership by the community.

At the meeting questions were raised as to whether the committee had any buy-in from high-school principals and the Department of Education.

Amanzimtoti High prinicipal Louise Lemmer said she would consider giving the proposal her support. not always easy, and that the detail is where things can go south, but I also be­ lieve that nothing is a stronger force than people with open minds.

TS: How would a decision at SGB level in­ fluence whether this process to go ahead?

EDL: The South African Schools’ Act (84/1996) is very clear on the power of the SGB within our current dispensation. SGBs have more power than they realise. They can determine the way forward.

TS: You said forming one SGB to oversee all the schools does not mean individual SGB’s won’t have buy in, please elaborate?

EDL: The Department of Education deals with one SGB per school. This does not mean the ‘new school’ would negate, or eliminate in any way, the input of other par­ ents. The structures within new school have to determine to serve the best inter­ est of everybody. An amalgamation is in­ clusive, not exclusive.

TS: Is there anything you would like to add to explain to our community why this pro­ posal deserves our buy­in or consideration.

EDL: I could probably write a thesis on this, but would limit it to ­ this is a crossroad, an intersection where choices need to be made. The community must make a call.

We live in a strange world. We can leave very little to our children other than roots, and wings to fly. Children in transit don’t grow roots.

A DRIVER was injured after he lost control of his vehicle while travelling on the N2 south near Isipingo on Saturday.

According to Netcare 911’s Chris Botha: “Reports from a driver of a bakkie indicate he was tailing a vehicle when the car slammed on brakes, the driver of the bakkie tried to avoid the car and spun out.

“Another vehicle driving south hit the bakkie head­on, the wreckages of both vehicles came to rest in the bush at the side of the road.” Botha said the driver of the bakkie sustained serious injuries while the other occupants es­ caped uninjured.

HE Better Together Network (BTN) met on Wednesday, May 24, in the Amanzimtoti SAPS boardroom.

The network is for non-profit organisations, community organisations, churches and businesses to network and share ideas and expertise.

Highlights of the meeting included guest speaker Gideon Pieterse from Amanzimtoti Cares who said the organisation assists families with food parcels, clothing and household items and strives to find sustainable ways to assist families get back on their feet.

The biggest challenges at the moment is that the organisation no longer has premises from which to operate.

The organisation is thankful to the Amanzimtoti Methodist Church for their hall which they use on Mondays for the distribution of food parcels, but it is still in need of storage for clothes waiting for sorting and donation.

“One option would be a Wendy House and the Free Masons have pledged their assistance to help raise the funds.

“The organisation is also hoping to buy the Wendy House at a discounted price and looking companies selling Wendy Houses that are able to assist,” said Amanzimtoti Cares volunteer Amanda Slabbert.

Charlene van der Spuy, welcomed newcomer Carol de Castro Netto, representing the Community Policing Forum and June Neuhoff, Sandy Elliot and Moira Rigby from Kingsburgh Lions, who joined the meeting for the first time.

Van der Spuy reminded the meeting of a free training session - “SelfPreservation and Regeneration”, on Wednesday, 26 July at Lionsgate Church from 10am to 12pm to assist community volunteers, caregivers and non-profits with avoiding emotional burn-out.

Africa Cares will be having a training course - Bright Star Life Skills Development Programme - from 23 to 25 May at Lionsgate Church, 24 Queens Terrace, Amanzimtoti. The course is a personal and leadership development programme.

Sharon-Ann Theron gave feedback on the quilted pillow project and on donated items available to non-profits.

The network discussed the Highland Gathering and said they were disappointed the expo was not on the same field as the gathering, which resulted in fewer visitors and BTN members not being situated together as planned.

The meeting resolved to start negotiating space early for next year’s gathering. Members were called to send ideas on how to better promote the non-profits to the BTN secretary or chairperson.

THE 2017 dusi2c race from Pietermaritzburg to Durban has been dominated by local Andrew Hill, and the four-time winner will be teaming up the young Julian Jessop as he eyes a fifth win in the two-day race from June 10 to 11.

Hill has been victorious in each of the four installments of the race and with a new partner in 2017, hopes to make it five from five and it would take a brave gambler to bet against the Team TIB duo who have struck up a sound partnership in 2017. “It’s always good to race with Julian. He is a serious upand-coming talent and it’s great that we have created such a good partnership.

“He keeps me on my toes and it’s great for me to race with him, but it’s also good for him to race with someone with experience who can teach him the ropes of stage racing.

We get on well together and understand

each other which makes the combination work well.”

The pair recently finished fifth overall at the KAP sani2c, against one of the strongest fields in the race’s 13-year history. In testing conditions Hill and Jessop proved that they are able to compete with the best stage racers in the country. Hill, who lives in Hillcrest, is a regular visitor to the Valley of 1000 Hills where he does a lot of his training, however, he still feels privileged and appreciates the opportunity to race so close to home.

“The dusi2c is nothing like sani2c in that it gets right to the roots of mountain biking.

There are no frills to the event and you feel like you have taken part in something different and exciting when you get to the finish.

“It is such a cool event and for me being just 20 minutes away from home makes it even more of a privilege because there are a

lot of guys I feel who miss out on it.

“The festivities at the overnight stop at Mfula Store make the race special and the setting in the valley is always appreciated.”

Although “Farmer” Glen Haw doesn’t like to change too much about the route as it is a track that follows many different cattle paths, local commuters routes and district roads to the sea in Durban, however, he usually has a few tricks up his sleeve.

“It’s always good to go and do a bit of a refresh along the route beforehand. The route tends to be similar every year except there might be a different river crossing here or there. I always want to sort of know what to expect considering how different the race is in terms of navigation,” said Hill.

Despite winning every previous edition of the race, Hill believes that there is always a threat to his crown and 2017 is no different as he highlights teams that could prove to be difficult to beat.

“Warren Price and Trevor Rowe finished second last year and they know the route really well so they will definitely provide a threat.

“The Change a Life guys are always a force to be reckoned with in their own back yard and with their strong performances at the Absa Cape Epic, if they are at dusi2c they will be other teams to watch out for,” a cautious Hill added.

The dusi2c is a two-day mountain bike race from Camps Drift in Pietermaritzburg to Blue Lagoon in Durban.

The race follows the Msundusi and Mgeni Rivers through the Valley of 1000 Hills.

KZN Youth Run in Durban this week WITH only a few days to go before the Comrades Marathon, thousands of KwaZulu-Natal youth are ready to taste the Comrades experience when they participate in the KZN Youth Run in Durban on Saturday,June 3.

A strong field of close to 10 000 youth runners is expected to line up for the 5km and 10km races which will start at King’s Park Athletic Stadium and finish at the adjacent rugby outer fields at 8am.

The Youth Run is held annually on the eve of the Comrades Marathon and is part of the programme to unearth talent which is funded by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sport and Recreation in partner-

ship with KwaZulu-Natal Athletics.

Scores of Comrades Marathon runners also use the race as a warm-up exercise before taking on the 80-plus kilometres between Durban and Pietermaritzburg.

MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Bongi Sithole-Moloi, said the youth run provides a good platform for youth to showcase their talent.

“The youth run has over the years grown to become one of the most prominent events on our youth development calendar. The aim is to expose the youth, especially those from township and rural areas, to the experience and feel of the Comrades Marathon so they are encour-

Bulk entries, which were accepted mainly through the schools, have been closed and only individual entries are being received online through the KwaZulu-Natal Athletics website. Late entries will also be accepted at the Comrades Expo up to Friday, June 2.

BROTHERS Matthew and Jason Maree competed in the JKA National Tournament in Johannesburg at the Standard Bank Arena recently.

Nine provinces were represented with over 3 000 competitors coming together. The brothers were awarded South African JKA national colours.

Matthew again won double gold for kata and

kumite in the 11-year-old red-belt division, making this the third year in a row he has won double gold at the JKA Nationals.

Jason won gold for kata and bronze for kumite in the 13-year-old red-belt division.

This is also his third year in a row to win gold for kata.

ISIPINGO Legends held on and secured a morale-boosting 3-2 victory against Maritzburg Legends at the Northdale stadium, Maritzburg.

Scores were 1-1 at half time, but Isipingo Legends came back with guns blazing in the second half.
