Bring joy into your 2020 with these out-of-the-box resolutions.

1. SCHEDULE SOME WEEKLY TIME TO JUST BE BORED.

2. SPEND LESS TIME ON SOCIAL MEDIA.

If your brain is always occupied, then you’re probably missing out on some of your best ideas. “When you get bored, you ignite a network in your brain called the ‘default mode,’” says podcaster Monoush Zomorodi. “The default mode is where we connect disparate ideas, we solve some of our most nagging problems, and we do something called ‘autobiographical planning.’ This is when we look back at our lives, we take note of the big moments, we create a personal narrative, and then we set goals and we figure out what steps we need to take to reach them.”

Setting a New Year's resolution to stay off of Instagram is so cliché that at this point, we're sure even Mark Zuckerberg has thought about doing it. But if you truly want to ring in 2020 with less social media stress, consider using your iPhone's "screen time" feature. With this function, you can program your phone to limit your time spent on certain apps and even schedule periods when you want specific apps to be unavailable. For Android users, the FamilyTime app provides a similar service.

3. GET OUT INTO NATURE MORE OFTEN. So put down your smartphone, stop playing Candy Crush, and schedule some time to do nothing.

Sometimes you have to get out of your comfort zone to experience more happiness and that includes leaving your home from time to time. After all, a 2015 study published in Landscape and Urban Planning found that even just under an hour's worth of walking out in nature can make you feel happier, as well as decrease anxiety and improve memory. Go literally smell the roses.

4. PERFORM ONE ACT OF KINDNESS EVERY DAY. If you're really committed to becoming a better person in 2020, make a practical resolution to work toward that goal.

Whether it's checking behind you to hold the door open for someone, moving your bag off a chair for someone to sit in, or even smiling at someone on the street, one random act of kindness each day can go a long way.

5. FIND SOMEONE TO MENTOR. If you've got kids, they're practically required to think you're a stellar grown-up. Let that happen. But even if you're not a parent, once you've got a few miles on your odometer, find a young person who could benefit from the lessons you've learned along the way. January is National Mentoring Month, after all, so get involved. And remember that while your mentee will certainly benefit from your wisdom, it also does you good to feel big in someone's eyes.

6. CHANGE YOUR PERCEPTION OF OTHER PEOPLE. One of the easiest ways we make ourselves unhappy isn't about us at all, but instead, about how we perceive other people. This year, make an effort to cut people some slack.

Stop holding people accountable to agreements they never made.

It's hard to be happy when you are annoyed at the people in your life. Acknowledge that your mind believes that your way of living is the right way and everyone else needs to get on board. Of course, this is completely false. No one signed up for your life program. Let them behave the way they see fit. If you don't like it, remove yourself or change your context to accept them as they are."

7. CHOOSE ONE PERSON YOU DISAGREE WITH AND TAKE THEM OUT TO LUNCH. Most of us are guilty of “other-ing” people who think or act differently than we do. As a result, we stop seeing their humanity and focus on their differences. Is there anyone you find yourself judging or negatively stereotyping because of their views? Invite them to lunch. However, before you meet, agree on some ground rules — that neither of you will persuade, defend or interrupt. Be curious, conversational and real. And be sure to listen.

You and your lunch mate will develop a newfound respect for each other, and take the first steps beyond your typical “knee jerk” reactions.

8. RECONNECT WITH AN OLD FRIEND. At the same time, as we get older, we tend to lose touch with the people back in our hometown or from college. New is good, but continuity deepens life. Reach out to someone you liked long ago and reconnect with them. They don't have to become a bestie, but it's worth your time to let them back into your life.

9. MAKE A POINT TO CONNECT WITH A LOVED ONE BY PHONE EVERY WEEK. Whether it's with friends new or old, make a bigger commitment to reaching out and connecting with those in your life this year. It's easy to forget to encourage friends who are feeling low, or to celebrate loved ones' successes. Remember that it doesn't matter if you have any particular wisdom to share—reach out anyway with a phone call to someone you care about every week.

10. FIND A SHARED HOBBY WITH YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER In 2020, make more of an effort to explore new hobbies and spend time with your significant other by finding an activity that both of you enjoying partaking in. Whether it's taking weekly cooking classes or learning a new language, this shared experience will strengthen your bond and allow you to expand your horizons the way you've been meaning to for years.

he heated debates that took place during the beginnings of Downtown Commons are now just faded memories of the few. While, for many, fond memories and new family traditions are being created at the little park in the heart of downtown Clarksville.

Paula Atkins is the Event Planning Manager for Downtown Commons on behalf of Montgomery County Government.

“This is our third ice rink season, and we've been open for two summers,” Atkins said. “The rink is a challenge, mainly because of weather. With it being outside and open-air, we are at nature's mercy. Apparently, wind is a huge factor. I didn't think that would be a thing, but the friction it creates going across the ice causes a faster melt-rate. Rain isn't as bad as wind and sunlight.”

Atkins is referring to the very popular ice rink that first opened during 2017's holiday season. The current rink is approximately 42 x 82, slightly larger than the rink used during the first season. The orientation has also changed over time.

“This now fits perfectly into our space,” Atkins said. “The rink opens in late November, coinciding with Christmas on the 8

Cumberland, and remains open through January 20th this year, which is MLK Day. We would love to see 20,000 – 25,000 people this season. We are slightly behind our projections so far, but haven't started our full schedule yet.”

While school is out, December 20 – January 6, the rink opens Monday – Saturday at 10 a.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.

“With school being out and families coming into town, parents are always looking for something fun to do,” Atkins said. “The ice rink is a great option.

We try not to sell more than 125 tickets per session. Over that amount, the ice tends to get a little crowded.

out a handful of times his season, especially Christmas parade night. Lots of people came by before the parade, then many came back afterward. It was a beautiful night.”

Atkins says she gets a lot of feedback from park-goers, and it's almost always positive.

“We're very happy with the response we've gotten,” Atkins said. “I've not had one person say this is a bad thing. This has been wonderful. People are making new memories, and expanding their own holiday traditions. Now, they're bringing friends and family from out of town. We're drawing people from all over Southern Kentucky and Middle Tennessee.”

Clarksville's Christmas Parade and SpiritFest seem to put Downtown Commons front and center during the holidays.

“This was the fifth year of SpiritFest,” Atkins said. “That event was created to increase downtown traffic flow before the parade. We provide an outdoor stage for groups to perform on, and of course the ice rink. It's just more for people to do. We saw an amazing turnout this year.

Thousands came out for the parade, but just in our 4-block area I saw close to 1,000 people here for SpiritFest. We had school choirs and the folks from Dance Force. It was a great opportunity for school kids to showcase what they've been working on.”

This past season, April to October, Downtown Commons had a minimum of two events or activities per week.

Atkins has partnered with a lot of agencies to provide free entertainment and activities that includes yoga, art classes, I stroll: Mommy and Me classes, and more.

2019 also featured the Friday night concert series Downtown at Sundown, MicCheck Mondays, and the Worship Night concert series on Wednesdays.

fireworks show,” Atkins said. “Worship Night is being expanded to the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month, and that's April to October. We just sent out a notice to local churches that we were looking for people to perform, and got an amazing response.

“Mic-Check Mondays was a singer/ songwriter thing that we did in June and July. That was a Visit Clarksville event that might not be back in 2020.

Other local businesses seem to be able to present open mic night better than us. We watch what others are doing and go into the markets that are under-served. We don't want to compete with our local businesses.”

Another element of Downtown Commons is the events that are hosted by outside entities. Atkins talked about successes in that area.

“Bikers Who Care hosts Red, White and Brewfest in June, and Oktoberfest in October,” Atkins said. “Those are both fantastic events. BWC does a

great job with everything they do.

For us, it's an added feature for downtown. They are able to market to people whom we normally don't reach. People come for an event like Brewfest, they see the park for the first time, and want to come back.

“For Oktoberfest, we worked with the city and found dates on which all four streets surrounding the park could be shut down. That set-up really opened up the event this year. We're sure Oktoberfest will continue to grow.”

Atkins talked also of the success of ArtLink's Chalk Walk, and Loaves and Fishes' Louisiana Saturday Night.

Fuel the Bus was a last-minute event that Atkins created with CPD Officer Samantha Kellet.

“Samantha and I, working with the F.U.E.L. Program were able to get City of Clarksville, Montgomery County, and First Responders involved,” Atkins said. “Everyone did a great job of

bringing in food donations for CMCSS students. I've never seen that much snack food in one place in my life. It was really cool.”

Atkins says there is something going

on at the park every single day, especially in the warmer months, weather permitting of course.

“Any given night, you'll see college students out there,”Atkins said. “They bring a game called Spike Ball. Some are playing, others are studying.

During the day, lots of moms bring their kids to play in the water feature, and get ice cream from Golly G's.

Several different church groups hold Bible studies here. Some people even bring their personal trainers and do workouts right there on the grass.

“You don't have to call ahead, just check our calendar and make sure there is nothing going on that would hinder what you're wanting to do. If it's clear, just come on out and have fun. It's open for birthday parties or even just hanging out with friends.”

Atkins is leaving at the end of January to pursue some personal opportunities, but sees herself coming back to a bigger and better Clarksville.

“I will keep a close eye on what's happening here,” Atkins said. “So much is happening with the Multi Purpose Event Center project, and the developments Charles Hand is proposing. I foresee coming back to a place that looks much different.”

Atkins wanted to remind everyone to check out the 3 on 3 Pond Hockey pick-up games. Also, the 3rd Annual Mayors vs Generals Broomball match in January, which will be preceded by the inaugural Guns vs Hoses match, that's Clarksville Police Department vs Clarksville Fire Rescue.

kay so a couple things about 2020. This year marks the beginning of a new decade and according to the Chinese calendar it is the year of the rat.

Speaking of rats, this year we want to pull ourselves out of the rat race that is life. This new decade is the perfect opportunity to jump off the wheel and start enjoying each moment as it happens.

By Taylor Lieberstein and on-demand everything, we don’t want to have to wait for things. At the end of the day, we’re often exhausted and stressed out from the "daily grind" and the chaos.

We don’t make time for what’s important to us, what we really want to be doing, like spending time with loved ones, or doing things that bring us joy.

The good news is it doesn’t have to be this way. It is possible to live a simpler life, a life where you truly enjoy each activity. One where you are present in everything you do. A life where you are content in slowing down rather than rushing to finish every task on your list. We are so used to that fast-paced and always-on lifestyle. In 2020 let’s rebel against a hectic lifestyle and slow down to enjoy life.

We live in a society that rushes through tasks, trying to get them done as quickly as possible, finishing as much as we can each day. Our culture desires instant gratification, we want things and we want them now.

Decide what is important.

How often do we stop to think about which things in our lives really matter most?

Make a list of what is most important in your life. And even if you are clear on our priorities, have you been living in a way that is consistent with them? Take a step back from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and think about what truly matters. What do you really want to be doing? Who do you want to spend your time with? What do you want to accomplish in your personal and professional life? Try making a short list of 4-5 things you'd like to do in your life, 4-5 people you want to spend time with, and 4-5 things you’d like to accomplish in your career.

Be present.

Most of our time is spent in the past or the future, rather than the present moment.

What we end up doing is passing through that moment on the way to somewhere else and, in doing so, we miss the moment.

It’s hard to slow down and enjoy life when

we’re constantly living in the past or worrying about the future. We must be present if we want to get any joy out of life.

First and foremost is gratitude. By having a profound appreciation for your life and everything in it, no matter what the problems might be, you can reap far more enjoyment out of simple pleasures. Problems will never disappear. The only time we’ll lack any problems is when we’re buried six feet under. It’s gratitude in the here-and-now that allows us to appreciate what we do have rather than what we don’t have. What are you doing right now? Right now, you are reading. Are you just reading? Where are your thoughts? Your emotions?

Your hands? Your sense of time? You are reading. That's it, so just read.

Examine your commitments.

We have been conditioned to go, go, go. Much of our stress comes from the fact that our lives are "overbooked." We can’t possibly do everything that is on the calendar and we certainly can’t enjoy those things if we’re trying to do them all. Accept that you can’t do everything and find time to do what’s important to you. You'll soon find that it's easy to eliminate the commitments that aren’t as important. If you have children, make sure not to over schedule their lives. They, too, can learn to have a simple and peaceful life. Avoid lastminute commitments, a calendar can serve as a useful visual reminder of standing and upcoming events.

However too many blank spaces may tempt you to fill them quickly. Before taking on another obligation, be sure to obtain a good description of what will be expected of you and the time investment. Consider how the new activity will contribute to your development and if it's in-line with your happiness goals. Days reserved "just for you" or "just for family" are as important as everything else.

Intentionally Power Down Technology.

iPads, and laptops, it's easy to get caught up in what's going on around you 24/7. Set strict boundaries for emails, Instagram, Twitter, texting, and phone use, such as making your lunch break a "technologyfree" time. It will cut down on the feeling of chaos in your daily life. Learning to powerdown technology is an important skill with numerous benefits. The wisest of us take time to learn the discipline. And live fuller lives because of it. Powering-down also helps remove unhealthy feelings of jealousy, envy, and loneliness.

Anne Lamott said it best, “Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.” Solitude is harder to find in an always-connected world, it is becoming increasingly obvious that our world is developing an unhealthy attachment to it. In a world of smartphones,

Multi-tasking has become the new normal and doing things at a regular speed is frowned upon. But, sometimes, we just need to slow down and enjoy life. We need to breathe, relax, and savor the moments that will one day disappear. The general consensus is to try to get things done quickly and “efficiently,” even if that sometimes means sacrificing quality.

In order to slow down and enjoy life, we must focus on doing one thing at a time and doing it the right way. When you find the desire to do many things at once, pause and breathe for a moment.

Take a mental step backwards and refocus your efforts. Hone your skill and commit to doing and completing that one task to the best of your ability.

Contrary to popular belief, human beings cannot multitask. What we are capable of is handling several serial tasks in rapid succession or mixing automatic tasks with those that are not so automatic. That's one of the reasons that texting while driving is the functional equivalent of driving with a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit. We can't effectively attend to two things at once, even the superficially automatic ones.

Let Less be More.

Life can become cluttered with too many things. With so many things going on in our lives, and with the accumulation of so much stuff, how are we ever expected to slow down? When we’re racing from one transaction to another, never really reaping the benefits of happiness, how can we ever enjoy life? Declutter.

Organize. Trust me when I say I know this one is easier said than done but it’s a tried and true method that increases happiness. The method recently gained popularity when organizing consultant Marie Kondo published her book, The LifeChanging Magic of Tidying Up, a system of simplifying and organizing your home by getting rid of physical items that do not bring joy into your life. Streamline your things down to the items that really matter. Take pleasure from the things in life that really matter family, relationships, and connectedness. We’re only here for a very brief time. We mustn’t clutter that time with too many things.

urely you have seen the various viral memes of Buzz Lightyear showing Sherriff Woody something in the distance that’s been cleverly captioned with something that is trending?

Often times, the New Year, New Me goal setting time of year can make us feel just like Woody does in this photo. All season long, many people of anticipated the arrival of a New Year to be that moment to start eating right again, working out, losing weight….

These unrealistic expectations for weight loss, coupled with fad dieting techniques, are the ideal recipe for weigh cycling – the repeated loss and regain of body weight, otherwise known as “yo-yo dieting”. Sure, weight loss is great, but when it’s short term because the results are hard to continue due to an unmanageable method of losing the weight, what’s the point?

Sher Fick: Imitation of Life Jan 7–Mar 30 | Bruner Gallery Sher Fick brings her carefully crafted assemblages—works inspired by her spinal cord surgery. Fick was the inaugural artist at Seed Space for Experimental Art & Dialogue in Nashville, TN. Fick was one of nine female artists in TAKE CARE: Biomedical Ethics in the 21st Century, a traveling exhibition featured at The Pool Art Fair, during Art Basel–Miami and ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, MI. She has exhibited in select museum, solo, and juried exhibitions since 2001.

Tom Malone: Works on Paper from the Museum Collection Gifted by Charlsie & John Halliburton Jan 3–Mar 1 | Harvill Gallery See works on paper by beloved Clarksville resident Tom Malone.

Malone studied at Austin Peay State University from 1971-1972 and continued art classes in 1974-1975.

This series includes 10 portraits.

Malone died in 1998 as a result of an aneurism.

I Have a Voice: Traveling exhibition from Tennessee State Museum Jan 14–Mar 29 | Memory Lane The exhibition, on loan from the Tennessee State Museum, gives a snapshot of Tennessee’s rich African American musical heritage and its influence on worldwide music. The exhibit gives visitors a chance to hear the voices of the many Tennessee African American men and women who made their mark on American music from ragtime to Motown.

Reimagined Lore: The Art of Tara Swalgren Jan 14–May 5 | Orgain Gallery This animal-themed mixed media exhibition showcases the work of local artist & APSU graduate Tara Swalgren.

She is currently an art instructor at Madsion Street Art & Music Academy in Clarksville. Swalgren explains, “I want to create these intricate and beautiful creatures that we only see and hear about in folk lore or our fantasies. I want to bring them into our reality, our view. To allow us to gaze upon something so fantastical that it can only be made through art.”

Serepta Jordan: From the Collection Jan 14–Mar 1 | Lower Level Foyer Serepta Mildred Jordan was born January 27, 1839 in New Providence, Tennessee. Jordan started a journal around 1857, when she was 18. She continued writing in her journal until 1864, close to the end of the Civil War. The journal, recently restored, is featured in the exhibition along with photos and a collection of Jordan’s personal belongings.

YMCA’S RESTORE MINISTRIES SMALL GROUPS Restore Ministries offers small groups led by trained and caring facilitators in a supportive environment in which people who are seeking to make similar life changes can work together to identify and overcome the barriers standing between them and lasting change. If you are having relationship difficulties, experiencing loneliness, grief, stress, sadness or just need encouragement, we can help. Our groups address all types of issues ranging from anxiety to grief to low self-esteem and body image. Restore Ministries is for everyone, guiding men and women to complete hope, healing and restoration. Most groups meet for 8 weeks.

Fees are based on your ability to pay.
